Book Description
For many mystery readers, Alpine, Washington–Mary Daheim’s fictional small town in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains–has become a beloved second home, a delicious retreat from the stresses of life. Yet the editor of The Alpine Advocate, Emma Lord, knows all too well that the picturesque old logging town is loaded with scandal: family feuds, illicit romance, chicanery, and sometimes deadly violence.
THE ALPINE RECLUSE
In the middle of a hot midsummer night, Emma is awakened by fire trucks rushing to a blaze at the nearby home of newlyweds Tim and Tiffany Rafferty. At daybreak, Tiffany and her unborn child are safe, but Tim, never blessed with good luck in all his thirty-plus years, has perished in the fierce conflagration. Sheriff Milo Dodge suspects murder and arson, and rumors fly from the Burger Barn and Mugs Ahoy to the Grocery Basket and the Venison Inn. Some swear the Rafferty marriage was crumbling. Others hint at stock fraud. A few mention momentary sightings of a possibly mad recluse known as Old Nick.
Sacrificing the heady enticements of a budding romance to nail down a great story, Emma shifts into high investigative gear while her fearless House & Home editor, Vida Runkel, rushes in where angels fear to tread: straight into the private lives of some of Alpine’s most respectable–and now terminally edgy–citizens. But neither Emma nor Vida suspects the unbelievable truth.

On Fire.......2007-09-04
Mary Daheim has done it again. She's one of the best writers of this genre that I can recall. It's a must to read.
Emma Lord Made Me a Recluse.......2007-05-14
Once again, Mary Daheim has forced me to abandon my social life in order to catch up on the latest exploits of Emma Lord and her loyal staff at the Alpine Advocate. After 20 odd books, each character feels like family -- so much so, that I'm tempted to draw up a genealogy of the residents of this demi-mythical town! My husband can't understand my obsessions with series of mysteries like this; imagine his confusion when I recently discovered that Mary had written an entirely different series I have yet to complete! Here's an example from the Bed-and-Breakfast series... Major Vices (Bed-And-Breakfast Mysteries)
Brew a good cuppa tea and enjoy!
Not the Greatest in the Series.......2007-04-09
I really enjoy this series a lot and think it blows away the Bed & Breakfast series, which has gotten stale and stupid. This installment, however, was not the best in the series.
The resolution to the murder was disappointing. Under the circumstances of it, it also made no sense that the person involved in the confession. would try to keep it a secret. I was definitely let down when I finished reading it.
One thing I love about this series are all the side characters. You don't have to know who they are per se, but we've learned enough about them over the length of the series for them to fit well into the story. Milo, of course, is the best of them, and I'm disappointed the author hasn't gotten him together with Emma.
That being said, however, it's time for the character of Vida to disappear. In the beginning, she was somewhat amusing. Now, she's an annoying buttinsky who really serves no purpose to the stories other than to get on everyone's nerves by butting into their business. The stories got better when Ed Bronsky left the newspaper and was reduced to an occasional "walk-on" role -- it's time to do the same with Vida and her idiotic grandson, Roger.
Huh? the solution makes no sense.......2006-08-01
You know a mystery writer has run out of ideas when she relies on a confession to solve the crime. This book was written for the sake of sales, not because there was a story to tell. By the time it ended, there were stil a dozens of loose ends and the no evidense to support the solution.
Time to retire, Ms. Daheim, 'cause this series is done.
Fire In The Night.......2006-06-11
It's the middle of the night, when Emma Lord, owner of the Alpine Advocate, the local newspaper is awaken by fire trucks. The house down the road is on fire. Standing out with the rest of the neighbors, Emma is worried about newlyweds Tim and Tiffany and their unborn child.
At daybreak things look up as Tiffany is found to be safe, unfortunately the same can't be said for poor Tim. It's even more unfortunate when Sheriff Milo Dodge confirms that Tim was murdered before the fire was started.
Suspicion seems to fall on either local recluse Old Nick, who is rarely seen and seems to live somewhere in the forest. Or possibly on Tiffany herself, as there are rumors of marital discord.
As usual, Milo doesn't seem to be investigating fast enough for Emma, so she decides it up to her to start her own investigation and find the killer before an innocent person is accused of the crime.
Highlights:
Emma is always a delightful character and I always enjoy her communications with her son, Adam, who's a priest serving at the North Pole.
The Alpine residents. Leo Walsh & Vida Runkel from the paper. The Town Fool - Ed Bronsky who in this installment decides he might run for the county commission board. Emma's son, Adam and Spence, her rival, who owns the local radio station, thereby being able to scoop the paper on all the breaking stories.
Milo Dodge - The Sheriff, besides Emma, is the best character in the book and the best partner for her.
Lowlights:
Rolf Fisher. Emma's new boyfriend. We had to suffer through book after book with the love of her life, Tom and now it's looks like we're stuck with another jerk. Rolf is also a reporter and should understand Emma's responsibilities as the owner and editor of the Advocate. But when she forgets a date they have due to the murder that just happened and she's trying to cover, instead of being understanding when she says she'll still come down but she'll be late, he tells her he already made other plans that afternoon and not to bother. Anyone who makes other plans before finding out if you're going to show up for the date needs to be dropped instantly.
The mystery: I hated the murder, hated the resolution. I can't say why this entire mystery was so bad due to not wanting to give anything away.
You can't expect every book to be a gem, and I can't wait for the next book.

Kids tend to blame themselves when parents divorce. The Sandcastles workshop--now mandatory in over a dozen counties throughout the United States--is a half-day group session for children of divorce between the ages of 6 and 17. This intensive workshop helps kids open up and deal with their feelings through drawings, games, poetry, role playing, and other activities. Helping Your Kids Cope with Divorce details many of the workshop exercises, all designed to increase communication, understanding, and togetherness between parents and kids. The book is also packed full of suggestions on everything from the best way to break the divorce news to a child (it differs according to age group) to facing the holidays, visitation, custody arrangements, anger, discipline, co-parenting, single parenting, overcompensation, sorrow, custody fights, and much more.
Author Gary Neuman never patronizes or preaches, and although he is technically a child advocate, he proves himself to be an advocate of every member of the divorcing family. Neuman takes a hands-on approach and believes that children need not be permanently scarred by divorce--that with work and time, divorce can actually become a positive force for change. A powerful tool for protecting children caught amid parental struggles, Helping Your Kids Cope with Divorce should be required reading in all divorcing families. --Ericka Lutz

Customer Reviews:
This is the one!.......2007-10-10
Forget any other book (and believe me I went through a lot of them)!
G. Neuman helps you in very warm and positive way (and isn't what you need right now?), to understand the development stages your children are at, how divorce can affect them and most important how to help them. I have 3 children and it was so important for me to go to what is specific to their ages. I love all the little tools you can use to see where your child is at.
Should be required reading for all children whose parents are going through a divorce.......2007-05-01
If you are going through a divorce and have small children, this book is for you. Children often cannot express their feelings about divorce. They tend to blame themselves or one of their parents. If children are not allowed to express themselves and the feelings they have about their parents divorce are suppressed, deep seated anger brews inside them. Read this book with your kids. It will help them cope with their feelings and learn to accept the divorce.
Seven Secrets to a Successful Divorce
this book is trash.......2007-04-14
the section on toddlers is written entirely from the female perspective assuming that the female actually cares and gets the child.
I am a father and have custody and think that this book is garbage for all those dads out there that have their loved one.
Great Book!.......2007-01-05
This is the type of book that once you start, you can't put it away. Very interesting and profund.
a must have for anyone dealing with divorce.......2006-12-30
This book was a God send during my tumultous divorce eight years ago. I recommend it to anyone dealing with children during a divorce. It teaches you what to do and say to young kids when your ex is bad mouthing you or sharing inappropriate behavior or information. It gives wonderful tips and tools about how to guide your children through what is an intensely challenging life change. Most of all, it helps a parent or step parent know what is appropriate and what isnt. It gives children a license to stand up for themselves and say "I am not comfortable discussing this, mom." I loved this book and recommend it to everyone I meet.

First book I grab for ideas.......2007-08-15
I bought this to replace the copy I shared with my family. I should have ordered several. It is a great first cookbook and a good reference manual for experienced cooks. The alphabetical layout makes more sense and the book is full of good basic ideas for all types of food and methods.
A useful volume providing both recipes and hints on cooking.......2007-01-01
An interesting concept is at the base of this book. It provides hundreds of recipes--as a part of what is described as 5,000 "ingenious kitchen hints, secrets, shortcuts, and solutions."
Coverage is from A to Z. Some examples of helpful hints. On page 3, substitutes for alcohol in recipes are noted. Instead of one tablespoon of sherry or Madeira, use one tablespoon of apple juice. Another item under A is the choice of the right apple for the right purpose. For example, Golden Delicious apples can be used for sauce, baking, salads, and eating; McIntosh apples are best for eating and sauce; and so on. And immediately after these hints, there is a nice recipe for spicy applesauce (using McIntosh apples). On page 75, for those readers addicted to Buffalo Chicken Wings, there is a recipe for Buffalo Hot Sauce. While I would prefer old-fashioned Tabasco Sauce, the recipe calls for somewhat milder hot pepper sauces, for palates that aren't as willing to burn. In addition, there are a couple recipes for using the sauce other than on chicken wings. What about making Mango Salsa? Page 268 features a simple, easy to make recipe. Polenta? Pages 377-378 provide a veritable "how to do it" mini-manual, including what to do if you err in making it (such as burning the bottom of the polenta). On Page 531, you can read how to prepare vegetables for grilling. For asparagus, snap off the tough ends and use direct heat to grill the vegetable. And so on and so on. A to Z? What about getting the zest from oranges to use in recipes? Here is one of the few places that I have run across this "how you do it" tidbit.
All in all, a very nice and useful volume.
Great resource for all chefs.......2006-11-23
I love this book! It's organized alphabetically making it an easy reference for quick questions, yet is written in an easy-to-follow, enjoyable tone that keeps me reading after I've found my answer. Listings include ingredients, techniques, and culinary approaches (ie "Cooking for the Week") and encyclopedic answers are enhanced by recipes, illustrations, "fascinating facts" (onions neutralize paint fumes) and endless tips. I've read many books on kitchen science but I return to this one most often for speedy references. As enjoyable for absolute beginner chefs as it is for seasoned pros.
Really Helpful for Even the Davnaced Cook.......2006-03-01
I love this book. I collect cookbooks and it is really hard to find something that gets me going. Many of the submissions (which are very well organized) also have great recipes. His long, slow oven cheesecake is worth the price of the entire book!!!
Everyone needs this in their culinary library.
My favorite and most used cookbook!.......2004-06-02
If I am about to cook something that I am not completely sure about, I will spend a few seconds looking it up in this book first. My cooking has improved dramatically since I have been using this and Bittman's wonderful "How to Cook Everything," which I find to be more exhaustive than this terse treasure. Brilliant is a joy to leaf through, a reliable reference, and a wonderfully instructive kitchen guide. My dining guests are envious of the skills I have gained from this book and I am constantly tempted to try new dishes and old ones prepared in novel ways. I recommend this as the most rewarding cooking reference to reach for first.
Book Description

A Real Trail Rider's Guide.......2007-02-02
Trail Riding by Rhonda hart Poe is more then just what the title indicates.
She takes you from getting ready to ride through the Trail Rider's Survival Guide and much more in the process. With only five years involved with horses and a few hundred miles on trails she leads you through every phase of trail horsemanship.
There is not adequate space here to pass along how much I learned and will use in the future "on the trail". Ms Poe covers everything from tack and gear for the trail to preparing you and your horse, whether you ride for pleasure or in competition.
Married to a true "Horse-Lady" with more then 20,000 miles on trails I suspected it was my inexperience until after she read the book. She enjoyed it and indicated that she had picked up a lot of tips that she had never thought of. That's from a woman who has a bookshelf full of books on trail riding.
The book was very educational and fun to read with a lot of information for beginners and experienced riders alike. I have no doubt that I will be a better trail riders after my first read and intend to read it a few more times. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be a better horseman, whether on trails or around the pasture.

This is a wonderfully informative book.

Book Description
In his newest book, silver expert Richard Osterberg guides readers on a colorful, yet practical tour of fine antique silver. The books first part deals with silver flatware made circa 1875-1885, with a broad representation of patterns and forms. Next, a myriad of serving pieces are displayed, with examples of each type and function. In the third part, place settings are covered in many different patterns, showing the wide variety of pieces that were used, from the common knives, forks, and spoons to more obscure forms like individual bird knives, bird forks, and cherry forks. Finally, individual place settings are shown, together with silver, china, linen, and crystal to suggest dining as a truly stimulating visual expereince. Throughout the text value ranges are given, making it easy to look up individual prices. Using this book can be both inspirational and educational. It is both a must for collectors wishing to identify pieces of old family silver and an essential aid to the modern host or hostess.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book, badly edited.......2003-04-28
The positives: This is a visually gorgeous book, jam-packed with photographs of silver flatware. Usual and unusual pieces are identified, and a range of patterns are illustrated. This was what I was looking for when I bought the book: A reference book to use to identify those weird utensils in the family silver collection. And, yes, "Yesterday's Silver" seems to serve that purpose well.
The negatives: Especially considering the cost of this book, the editing is shockingly bad! A page showing a range of ten different styles of forks, for example, will only have six of them labeled. A couple of captions are reversed. Luckily, the volume of photos and accurate captions are sufficient that a reader can compensate for editorial mistakes. But why, expecially at this price, should we have to?
It's also disappointing to find that some utensils are described in fairly minimal terms. What, for example, would a "Saratoga chip scoop" serve? Luckily I'd read some other silverware books recently, which explained the material more thoroughly. But, again, why would that information not be included here?
The cover states that the book includes a price guide. Well... that's stretching it a bit. Each illustration of silverware pieces lists a range of values for the items. But the values are rather vague, and judging from recent listings on ebay, quite exaggerated. The listings might make you feel good about the pieces you own, but they won't help with a realistic appraisal of the value of silver pieces.
All of that aside, I like this book. It really is beautiful, especially the opening pages that illustrate truly artistic pieces of silverware. I enjoyed reading it and think it will be a moderately useful reference over time. But it's disappointing to realize how much better it could have been, if only a little bit more editorial care had been taken.

Book Description
This book recognizes the achievements of master printer Kenneth Tyler who has worked with some of the greatest artists of recent times. The success of the collaboration between Tyler and key artists on the American art scene is manifestly evident in the National Gallery of Australia's collection of editioned original prints, screens, paper works, illustrated books and multiples, along with rare and unique proofs and drawings produced at Tyler's workshops.
The collection documents an extraordinary story of artist and printer collaboration in postwar America. Artists Josef Albers, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella have produced some of their finest works in a workshop atmosphere that celebrates creativity.
For Ken Tyler, collaboration engages both heart and mind; it inspires innovation, response, and reaction, the printer has to be like a chameleon, changing in disposition and approach to suit a particular artist's needs.
Book Description
Born in Panama in 1910, Maida Springer grew up in Harlem. While still a young girl she learned firsthand of the bleak employment options available to African American females of her time. After one employer closed his garment shop and ran off with the workers’ wages in the midst of the Depression, Springer joined Local 22 of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union.
This proved to be the first step in a remarkable advancement through the ranks of labor leadership positions that were typically dominated by white men. Ultimately, Springer became one of the AFL-CIO’s most important envoys to emerging African nations, earning her the nickname "Mama Maida" throughout that continent.
In this brilliantly edited collection of interviews, Yevette Richards allows Springer to tell her story in her own words. The result is a rare glimpse into the private struggles and thoughts behind one of the twentieth century’s most fascinating international labor leaders.
