Book Description
Known throughout Tennessee as "Old Kate," the Bell Witch took up residence with John Bell's family in 1818.It was a cruel and noisy spirit, given to rapping and gnawing sounds before it found its voices. With these voices and its supernatural acts, the Bell Witch tormented the Bell family. This extraordinary book recounts the only documented case in U.S. history when a spirit actually caused a man's death. The local schoolteacher, Richard Powell, witnessed the strange events and recorded them for his daughter. His astonishing manuscript fell into the hands of novelist Brent Monahan, who has prepared the book for publication.Members of the Bell family have previously provided information on this fascinating case, but this book recounts the tale with novelistic vigor and verve. It is truly chilling. AUTHORBIO: RICHARD POWELL was a Tennessee schoolteacher when he first encountered the Bell Witch. He died in 1848.BRENT MONAHAN is the author of half a dozen novels, the most recent of which is The Jekyl Island Club.He lives in Pennyslvania.

An Early American Story: A Ghost Tale for All Ages.......2007-09-30
This story is dull and slow-moving at times, it is a worthwhile endeavor to muddle through till the end. Written about a "haunting" of the 1800's, this book is written in the literary style of that time. Sometimes, that could prove trying to some readers. This book is worth the extra effort.
Betsy is haunted by a ghost. The people of the time, the 1800's, believe it is a result of a curse placed on her when her father had a land dispute with a neighbor woman. Throughout the book we follow all the details of the haunting, as well as the town's reaction to it. It isn't until the very end, that the true reason for the "haunting" is revealed. The ending is a shocker, but satisfying.
This narration, written by Betsy's husband to their daughter, reveals the details of her mother's haunting. With the text of this book, Betsy's father also left a statement explaining that the book must be opened and read if her mother began to again show signs of the "haunting". This serves as the prologue of the book.
The haunting of Betsy is written vividly, with colorful descriptions and settings. The characters are well-developed, and the reader actually falls in love with Betsy's sweet and devoted husband.
Haunting History.......2007-02-08
On the surface, this story doesn't seem very spooky ... until something in the text reminds you that it is not a historical novel. This is a journal of paranormal events that truly happened ... and it stays with you.
Chilling.......2006-12-11
This was the best fiction chiller I have read all year. You never can quite tell whether it is fiction or fact. Chilling tale with a good twist at the end.
remember a novel.......2006-12-06
As a mystery story, it's ok, but it's too bad when
people pretend something is true and rather perpetuate
a myth based on desperate fantasy and traumatic childhood memories.
Scary fun.......2006-11-15
Sooo much better than the movie. If you're thinking of seeing the movie, read the book first. If you've already seen the movie, read it anyway. Convincing because of the historical value. It has an interesting twist to the ending.
Book Description
The Bell Witch was around long before the Blair Witch was fabricated for scares. In May 2006, one of the greatest ghost stories will become the next big screen horror sensation. In1818, a supernatural force haunted the Bell family of Red River, Tennessee and eventually caused the death of one its members. A local schoolteacher, Richard Powell, recorded these chilling events for his daughter, but the manuscript disappeared. Then in 1998, novelist Brent Monahan discovers the long-missing manuscript andafter verifying its legitimacytranslates it into a book, An American Haunting: The Bell Witch, now widely considered the greatest ghost story ever written. In May 2006, this stunning blend of historical events and Monahans prose will hit theaters in a major motion picture event that will thrill audiences everywhere.

complete bore.......2006-06-27
i can not begin to describe the utter boredom experienced while reading this book. i can not fathom how anyone would consider something such as a ghost who carries on conversations and does tricks for the family it is supposedly haunting a horror story.

An Amazing Elektra.......2005-05-09
I got this book after reading Elektra the Hand as well as Elektra Scorpio Key. I was shocked to find that this comic was nothing like either. Sure, it contained the sai wielding assassin, but besides the common main character there was little resemblence. But i would have to say i was pleasently suprised and enjoyed every page of this. Its an interesting idea for a comic, one that works perfectly. This comic is written in two perspectives, from Elektras and also from the man she is killing. Such a simple story, but through the two perspectives many little things were revieled, little secrets and clues that seem to add up. This is solid work, with great story as well as art. My only complaint was that i didnt feel the story was complete. I consider this an elektra must buy, if you life elektra, DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!

Building on the success of their first book, the best-selling The pH Miracle, in this book Dr. Young and his wife turn their attention to what is considered by many health experts as America's number one health crisisthe growing numbers of people who are seriously overweight or obese. Contrary to other popular weight loss books, most notably those, such as The Atkins' Diet and The South Beach Diet, that tout a low-carbohydrate approach to achieving weight loss, the Youngs maintain that the primary culprit behind excessive weight gain, as well as many other health problems, is a chronic state of acidity in the body (a pH value below 7.1). Shifting the body's chemistry to a more alkaline pH, they maintain, will quickly and easily result in the loss of excess weight and the buildup of more lean muscle tissue.
The goal outlined by the Youngs in this book is to replace dieting with a 12-week, seven-step program that is intended to not only rejuvenate the entire body by replacing current blood cells with blood cells "at the peak of health," but also to create an ongoing lifestyle that will permanently keep off the pounds that were shed during the 12-week period. In addition to a rich section on eating tips to create more alkalinity in the body (complete with an extensive list of recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus), the book also covers the importance of adequate water drinking, proper exercise, important nutritional supplements, learning how to manage thoughts and emotions that can contribute to acidity, goal-setting, and, for optimum results, a two-week cleansing program. In support of the program, the book also includes a collection of testimonials from people who have achieved significant weight loss on the programfurther backed up by before-and-after photographs. With an increasing number of health professionals now emphasizing the importance of proper pH to overall health, the information this book presents is both timely and fairly easy to implement. Great book and information!.......2007-09-26
Anyone who wants to live a heathly life owes it to their self to due some research. There are many reasons why Ph is so veyr important, there are doctors in other countries treating (curing...) cancer with Ph methods and yet the good ole' American Medical system doesn't allow any information on products that they can not profit from. Do your own research and you will confirm this.
Yes the book's diet will be extreme to most people, well duh, that's why most are overwieght, sick and dying because this is not their diet, this isn't on the fast food menus and no it's in a TV dinner, ye sit requires effort, you you can listen to the everyday doctors and just take some new pill to suppress the symtoms and get worse.. Eat healthly live longer, your choice you decide!
Too many loop holes!.......2007-09-15
When i first started reading this book, i was intrigued, but now not so much. The book is a good read, but I believe Dr. Young needs to do more research and no be so bias. Being a vegatarian is not right for everyone. For instance, O blood types need meat for optimal health(organic is always the best), where as A's do not do well with meat. Those who got good results from following his style of eating may have gotten great results because they are A types which is 40% of the population in the world.
Also, he suggests taking clay during the 2 week cleanse, which is great but has no idea how and when it should be taken. Clay needs to be taken away from other supplements and food otherwise the clay may bind to the minerals and vitamins and expel them out of the body. Also, avacados are a great source of nutrition, but not for all blood types.
For those of you who don't believe in the eating right for your blood type should do the research and see that the priniple was and is applied to OM(Oriental medicine) which is at least 4000 years old. The koreans use it to, who are aware of it.
The thing that really pissed me off is how Dr. Young acts like only his products are the best. He defitnetly is a great business man, who needs to continue educating himself in order to deliver correct information to the people.
the ph miracle for weight loss.......2007-08-24
This book is very informative about how our bodies are supposed to be alkaline and how putting so many acidic foods in our bodies causes inbalances that can lead to all kinds of health problems. Talks about how to reverse an acidic body, become healthy and lose weight. Very realistic before and after photographs. Not models. Makes a lot of sense and is very easy to read. Has great recipes as well. Very important book
pH Miracle - great book.......2007-08-23
Dr. Young is rather extreme in his views, totally against the grain with regards to the American diet (which is pathetic - look at how obese people are becoming!); but I feel great even just beginning to adjust my pH level using his recommendations. I may not become a total vegan, but maybe so eventually. I love the info in this book. I'm thinking that a vast majority of Americans don't really 'know' what is healthy and is not. It is straight forward, easy to comprehend, and leaves no room for justifying poor health habits to yourself. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to look and feel better -and who actually are willing to DO something about it.
The pH Miracle for Weight Loss.......2007-06-02
I had cancer, diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and high cholesterol. I was 285 lbs. I was taking all kinds of medacations and getting worse all the time.
After reading the book and following it's instructions for 6 months I,m off all my meds and I now weigh 200 lbs. The reason I ordered so many copies of this book is I'm sending the book to family members and close friends. The pH Miracle for Weight Loss: Balance Your Body Chemistry, Achieve Your Ideal Weight

According to Charles Van Over, a food processor, an instant-read thermometer, and a baking stone are the only equipment essential to making the best bread you will ever eat. You also have to be willing to make a leap of faith, following his precise method meticulously: the bread dough must be made in a food processor that is run for exactly 45 seconds, and you have to use flour and water that produce dough with a temperature of 75-80° Fahrenheit. Check the book for the other six rules of Van Over's system and see if you agree that the results are stunningly good.
To assure clarity, the recipes provide U.S. measures by volume and weight as well as by metric measures. This versatility makes the book transportable around the globe, though its recipes are designed to work with American flour and other ingredients. The type is large and easy-to-read, which is most helpful when following the many steps involved in making bread. Color photos provide inspiration, while progressive shots in black and white demonstrate important steps in some of the recipes. You'll find directions for making bagels, sourdough, and breads enriched with milk, butter, or eggs, including Alsatian Kugelhopf and Cheddar Pepper Brioche with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, as well as Van Over's baguette, Semolina Bread, and a Presentation Loaf that is specially inscribed or decorated. If you have ever made bread with poor results, The Best Bread Ever will help you break through to the results you dream of.
Book Description
When Charlie van Over makes his bread, he breaks all the rules of classic bread baking. He doesn't proof the yeast. He uses cold water instead of warm. He mixes the dough in a food processor for forty-five seconds instead of kneading it by hand. He lets the dough rise in a cool place. The results? Perfect crusty-on-the-outside baguettes with texture, taste, and aroma. Light brioche with buttery crisp crusts and fluffy, saffron interiors. Chewy bagels with hardy, smooth crusts. A rich walnut loaf studded with nuts and scented with the full flavor of whole wheat. A homey cherry babka with a crunchy cinnamon sugar topping. How is this possible?
Like many inventors, Charlie came across his technique by accident. At a party for Carl Sontheimer, founder of Cuisinart, the company that first introduced the food processor to American home cooks, it was suggested to Charlie that he mix his dough in a food processor. Thus began several years of experimentation and, finally, a foolproof method for making perfect bread every time.
Now you can re-create Charlie van Over's great bread for yourself. And what's even more amazing is that Charlie's is a hands-off, rather than a hands-on, method. Once the dough is mixed in the food processor, there's no kneading. Just place it in a bowl at room temperature to allow the flavors to develop. Have to run out suddenly for a few hours? No problem. Just put the dough in the refrigerator until you're ready. You won't have to keep baker's hours or become a professional to make wonderful bread at home.
Once you've mastered the basic technique, the possibilities are endless. Fougasse, Ciabatta, Semolina Bread, pizza, Danish Twists, and even sourdough Olive Rosemary Bread and Idaho Potato Rolls. Have a favorite bread? Charlie even explains how to convert any recipe to The Best Bread Ever method.
The Best Bread Ever provides easy-to-follow instructions for more than sixty breads, step-by-step photographs, helpful advice for troubleshooting your food processor, rich color photographs of Charlie's bread, and recipes for using bread in bread puddings, soups, and other dishes. As Jacques Pépin says in his foreword, "Get your ingredients and equipment together and follow Charlie's remarkable method. You will never be without good bread again."

Truly the Best Ever.......2007-09-19
The Best Bread Ever recipe worked perfectly the first time and every time since. I expected a period of trial and error, but got golden brown, delicious baguettes with a crackly crust and soft crumb on our first attempt. When the easy way produces better results than the traditional laborious way it seems too good to be true. Abandon your stand mixer or hand work and buy a processor just for this.
Breads.......2007-08-15
The book is out of print and, thinking that it contained information and a way of baking that is more simplified, I paid an arm and a leg for the book. There is nothing wrong with the book per se, but I am experiencing the same results from current bread making books that incorporate a food processor..My advice...don't spend anymore for this out of print book than you would for a current book.
Wow This the Best Bread Book EVER..........2007-03-30
Why is this book not still in PRINT ?????????? I can't believe the incredible breads you can make in your own ovens. These are the best and freshest loaves you will ever have. Don't let the price scare you off It is worth every PENNY !!
Errata in Ingredient Lists.......2007-01-08
I made the baguettes and they were delicious. The best white bread I ever made. However, when I tried the "Classic Pullman Loaf," it turned out to be so salty that it was inedible! The recipe called for 2 3/4 TABLESPOONS of salt and I faithfully followed the recipe thinking that cookbooks never made mistakes in ingredients. Well, I learned to my regret that they do! I noticed a similar error in the Coarse Oatmeal Bread recipe. I'm surprised none of the other reviewers noticed it.
Also, I usually make wheat bread and his recipes all call for a Wheat Starter which takes 3 or 4 days to ferment. I thought the book would have regular whole wheat bread recipes in it.
I wrote to both the author and publishers and never received the courtesy of a reply. Odd, isn't it?
Why is this priceless book out of print!!??!!.......2006-12-04
This is a superb book, packed with solid information and a sure-fire method of making the best possible bread. So, the question is: Why is this wonderful book out of print? Particularly when there are so many bad books about bread making floating around.
Get it -- though you'll probably have to pay around $50 for it; it is well worth every penny. There are a lot of people to whom I would give this as a gift, were it still in print.
I repeat -- get it.

The fact that many birds learn to talk (and know what they're saying!) is proof that birds are not just a pretty addition to the living room. Bird owners know that their pets have unique personalities and that they demonstrate their thoughts and feelings. This book explains why birds behave the way that they do, how to recognize behaviors that indicate boredom, stress or poor health and how to work with a pet bird to modify undesirable conduct.

Interesting, light reading.......2000-08-16
This book is not authoritative but rather anecdotal in presentation. The author does not present herself as an avian expert, but does provide some good, "readable" information in a easy going format. It is comprehensive, and DOES cover a wide range of species. True, the author's Grey, Sinbad, is mentioned and shown throughout the book, but other species do recieve her attention. She recommends nuts and bolts for toys, but fails to mention that they must be free of zinc. (Stainless steel for example). I would not rely upon this book as my primary source of information, but rather as supplemental to other more authoritative texts written by avian experts.

Treasures of Sight & Sound is a Treasure!.......2000-12-15
As a bell collector I found this book to be very informative and helpful in identification of bells. I'm pleased that it also had a price guide included, although I don't agree with some of her prices as I've seen many items sell for higher amounts than she indicates. Since prices are always subject to change regarding collectibles,to me the important aspect of this book is the identification of bells, and that was wonderful.

The Rosetta Stone for Knitters.......2002-06-23
I bought some yarn once at the Rekyavik Airport (a beautiful Lopi, of course.) Some elegant patterns for pullovers were included, but they were in Icelandic, German and Norwegian. Lucky for me, I speak German. But not KNITTING German. What is "umschlag" and "abnehmen?" I can guess, but...I'd like to be sure.
There are many wonderful patterns available in French, Norwegian, Danish, Spanish and Italian. This book helps you translate the most common terms used in knitting for most of the European languages and even...Japanese. With a set of charts, you will find that knitting in translation is not all that difficult. This is the Rosetta Stone for knitters and really, if you are a serious knitter and want to explore the delights of foreign patterns, this is a must-have.
Knitting languages.......2001-02-12
This is an excellent book for people who love to knit and do not wish to be restricted to designs which are published only in English. It has knitting terms for more languages than I can remember, including the Scandanavian languages and Japanese. It is a must for knitting lovers who love to explore a multitude of designs.
I came across this book in a library, and I have ordered a copy for my personal reference.
A 'MUST BUY' for people who love to knit.
Book Description
Like a 24-hour help hotline, Knitspeak demystifies pattern language for knitters and gives them confidence to take on new projects
The only book of its kind
Designed for quick reference and sized to fit in every knitting bag
Knitting can be a challenging craft, but even more challenging than knitting itself is the cryptic languagea mix of abbreviations, numbers, jargon, punctuation marks, and other symbolsin which patterns are usually written. It's no wonder so many beginners (and even some whose skills are quite advanced) are intimidated by the bewildering codeor that so many yarn-shop owners grow frustrated by the amount of time they must spend deciphering patterns for the uninitiated.
Enter Knitspeak, a knitter's dictionary that disentangles the mysteries of pattern language and translates it into plain English, helping knitters to easily transition from confused to confident. Andrea Berman Price's essential guidewritten in a friendly, reassuring tone and formatted for quick referencebegins with an overview of how knitting patterns are organized. It then offers a comprehensive alphabetical listing of all the abbreviations, words, phrases, and symbols typically encountered in patterns.
Knitspeak's many easy-to-understand drawings clarify basic and not-so-basic needle techniques, and a series of sidebars deals with issues ranging from keeping track of simultaneous shaping to substituting yarns and reading a yarn label. The book's appendix is filled with valuable tips, charts, and worksheets.

Knitting translations.......2007-09-27
Great for when you are in the middle of a pattern and suddenly don't know what an abbreviation means.
Book Description
From the 25-year-old hipster to her 85-year-old grandmother, more than a third of the women in the United States knit. For the yarn-obsessed, Mary Beth Temple offers a glossary of knitting jargon and terminology in The Secret Language of Knitters with entries like:
Design Elements noun: Mistakes. As in "The fact that one sleeve is five inches longer than the other is not a mistake, it is a design element."
Stress Knitting noun: When the going gets tough, the tough get knitting.
With a universal affinity for cashmere and an absolute abhorrence of moths, veteran and beginning knitters alike will be certain not to cast off this humorous lexicon compendium.

LOVED IT!.......2007-09-17
I am a crocheter and not a knitter by an means, but his book made me laugh out loud MANY times! Secret language of knitters is a must have book! Now, when will we see a sequal such as the Secret Language of Crocheters? Crocheters want to know!
Great little book.......2007-09-12
This is a terrific, poignant, clever little book. I read it from cover to cover, and now I carry it around in my knitting bag along with my other essentials. Though it purports to be a dictionary of sorts, it's more of a memoir of a knitting fanatic with an incredibly wry sense of humor. You'll learn what kipping and frogging are, and you'll relive, with the author, her experience of knitting in a hospital waiting area to keep her mind off her husband's medical worries. You'll nod in silent understanding as she tells you of her yarn-buying compulsion, and maybe, like me, you'll be inspired to start newer, more challenging projects. Whether you're a beginner or a "knit whisperer," you need this little gem in your collection.
Clever and Entertaining.......2007-09-02

Book Description
“A welcome companion...The first two chapters—on space and color and on inspiration—set the stage perfectly as motivational tools....Most appealing are the brilliant, illustrative color photgraphs. Interesting and informative.......2006-11-24
Carter's book gives a wide-ranging look at many aspects of decorative painting. He starts with a brief introduction, followed by a gallery covering just about every room in the house in his bold, dramatic painted treatments - the cover give just of his interior examples. Take that as an inspriation or warning, as you see fit.
Next, he gives brief descriptions of many basic techniques, including multilayered washes of color, spattering, dragging, marbling, woodgrain finishes and others. This could have been a great resource, but lacks the detail and clarity needed for a do-it-yourselfer to have much chance of success. The project section includes two samples of furniture decoration, but the large majority describe room decorations. Again, I found the directions improvable, especially because I already had reservations about the wisdom or practicality of a beginner tackling such large projects with unfamiliar materials and techniques. I really had to wonder, too, about whether I'd like to live in a room decorated in faux leopard fur by means of stamps cut from potatos.
The last sections present primers on paints, solvents, media, and surface preparation (primers included, if you'll pardon the pun). This is epsecially helpful for special problems, including metallic and masonry surfaces. In most other ways, though, other books are better for the fussy bits of technique, materials, and suggestions for approachable projects.

Skip This One if you are a Beginner.......2005-12-03
I checked this book out of the library to determine if it was one I would like to add to my collection.
The first half of the book "Inspirations" showed different rooms with various faux finishes and paint, none of which were detailed. The second half of the book was divided into "Technique and Effects", "Projects" and "Directory of paints and surfaces".
"Technique and Effects" addresses the various techniques, i.e. sponging, splattering, combing, strie and others. Generally there were 1-2 small (about 2" x 4-5") close-up photos of the specific technique. The instructions for the technique followed with a few illustrations, not photographs. Some sections did not have illustrations, just text instruction of the technique (antiquing, aging wood and trompe l'oeil).
"Projects" included things like:
- Crackle-glazed headboard (basic and brief)
- Opulent hallway (some weird star-like spots that seemed more appropriate for a child's room or maybe a celestial theme)
- Faux Fur Interior (walls painted in a leopard-print using potatos)
- Theatrical Drawing Room (very amateurish looking).
There WERE several nice projects such as the:
- Empire Style Salon which used Trompe l'oeil panels (no detailed instructions)
- Townhouse Suite with Blue and white striped walls (again just brief steps)
- Silhouetted Salon - very unusual technique and kind of a stylized art painting of a figure done in a navy color
- Stone Blocked Bathroom - brief instructions but think I could follow this one without too much trouble
"Directory" discusses different type of finishes and how they are used; exterior and how to paint various objects (gutters, brick, doors); tiles/ceramic/glass and plastic. I found this section very informative, even though it did not go into a great amount of detail on each component but it was helpful information.
This book may be great for someone who already does faux-finishing, but I felt it lacked details for the beginner. I do think there are much better books out there for learning paint techniques which go into more detail. You might want to try Fresh Paint by Glenwood Sherry, Walls that Wow from Country Sampler Decorating Ideas (even though many of their techniques are not country) and Great Paint Finishes for a Gorgeous Home by Gary Lord
Excellent Idea Book!.......1999-12-15
I have been a professional faux painter for over 5 years. This is the book I turn to when a client is looking for something unusual. The photos provide endless, timeless finishes and designs. I have spent countless hours poured over Mr. Carter's book and I always find a little something in the pictures that I can turn into a 'new' look. The current 'in-style' colors may change, but that is the beauty of paint! Change the colors and you have a new look. As I always say, the best ideas usually begin as someone else's!

Not a must have.......2002-02-26
I'm not a professional painter so I need a lot of details on how to do something and this book was short on details. Most of the pictures of the effects are very close up, so I have no idea what they look when viewed a few feet away. I was disappointed with this book.

Great ideas for modern paint designs.......2001-12-30
I am a professional decorative painter, and this is without a doubt my favorite idea book. This doesn't have any of the frilly country stencils or flowers - this is all very stylized and modern, with clean lines and bright colors and metallics. It is definately something different from the normal decorative painting fodder. It is a great addition to a collection of idea/reference books. I use this book all the time.

In Paint Techniques for Home Decorating, seven simple methods--sponging, ragging, brush texturing, combing, mopping, stenciling, and block printing--yield a variety of pretty wall effects and home accessories. Beginners should have little trouble with most of the techniques, each of which is explained in general and then put into practice in one of the four dozen step-by-step projects. A stenciled magnolia-bedecked trellis climbs a folding screen; a beautiful trompe l'oeil rug is painted and block-printed right on the wood floor; a nine-drawer apothecary chest sports a different combed finish on each drawer; a bedroom combines positive and negative stippling divided by a brushed basket-weave pattern in a soothing array of blues. The look tends toward country (heavy on the trailing ivy and the pastel shades), but of course the techniques can be adapted to any decor style.--Amy Handy
