Veteran Chicago detective Abe Lieberman has things on his mind. His daughter's in from L.A., having left her husband. In addition, a small-time Korean gangster who lost his livelihood thanks to Abe has come to kill him--again.
"You come near here again, you're dead. I think it's better to be alive than dead, but you make up your own mind."

"I can go?" Kim asked warily.

"I wish you would. I've got an important phone call to make."

Kim rose, confused. "You won't even arrest me?"

"No."

Lieberman's foot was driving him crazy. He had to scratch it, and he did.

"So, more dishonor from the Jew devil," Kim said.

"You get your dialogue from very bad Hong Kong movies," Lieberman said. "You need a slightly higher grade of culture. You ever see Mildred Pierce?"

Bill Hanrahan, a pro lineman would-have-been thanks to bad knees, is Abe's longtime partner (cops call them the Rabbi and the Priest) and he, too, has issues. A softball assignment guarding the ex-wife and son of mob-accountant-about-to-sing Mickey Gornitz has just gone south; the woman's been murdered and the boy snatched. It's not the first time a woman's been killed while in Hanrahan's care, although it is the first since he's been sober. The kidnapper's demand to Gornitz--an unwelcome confidant of Abe's--is simple: kill yourself and the boy lives. An untenable situation for all, the resolution of which plumbs the vagaries of philosophy and morality.

Kaminsky has as sure a hand (from character development and dialogue to plot and pacing) as you'll find in any police procedural, and he's got more successful series running than many authors have successful novels. To the wonderful Lieberman series, add his contemporary Russian detective, Porfiry Rostnikov (star of 2000's Fall of a Cosmonaut); his 1940s Hollywood PI, Toby Peters (1991's Poor Butterfly), and his newest, Sarasota process server-cum-people locator, Lew Fonesca (1999's Vengeance). Do yourself a favor and read them all. --Michael Hudson

Book Description

Abe Lieberman is a strong, sympathetic character, an Everyman whose love for his family is only matched by his quiet, zealous commitment to justice: "A figure out of Talmudic lore-endearing, wise in his crotchets, weary with his wisdom." says The Washington Post. He loves what he does and it takes its toll as his commitment to what is right is sorely tested every day on the mean streets of Chicago. As a moral man, he is sometimes faced with some uncomfortable ethical choices in order to see that justice-rather than the letter of the law-is metered out. The Big Silence takes Lieberman and his Irish partner, Bill Hanrahan-the Rabbi and the Priest, as they are known on the streets-on a journey that will test their consciences to the limit. When the young son of an informant in a governmental witness protection program is kidnapped and a grisly death occurs, they will have to make some hard choices to make things right. Told with compassion and with the keen insight into the human psyche, The Big Silence is gritty, compelling....and unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Once Again Kaminsky Gives Us a Good Story.......2006-10-16

Abe Lieberman is a thin, jewish, sixty year old police detective in Chicago; his wife is the president of his synagogue; his daughter, who is on her second marriage is married to a black pathologist and live in the bay area; his grandchildren (from his daughter's first marriage live with him). His partner is a big ex-football playing Irishman named William Hanrahan; who is divorced, a recovering alcoholic (as is his younger son), and is in love with an Asian woman he wants to marry. On the Chicago force they are known as the 'Rabbi and Father Murphy'.

The cases in this book are not of that much interest, but it is the inter- action of Lieberman and his partner with a myriad of characters from multiple cultures that make this a worthwhile read. Kaminsky is great at getting the nuances of speech and the causes behind the actions of his characters to be so honest and real. A worthy addition to the series.

5 out of 5 stars Lieberman's tales just become deeper and r icher and better!.......2004-04-16

What a wonderful book! Virtually every character, small in part or large, transmits that evanescent hint of reality--reality soaked with love, hate, unsavory trade-offs between criminals and cops, between cops and cops (Our televison cops that give most Americans their conception of the police is unrealistically and inordinately distorted--towards the positive, which for us as viewers means cops that are really, really tough with the subtlety of an 100-mile hurricane ripping through a small town. In Law and Order, aren't most criminals one-diminsional, even if depicted favorably, usually when one of the cops or attys falls in love with one of the baddoes. Kaminsky says, "These men are cops; we depend on them, but they are very imperfect, very willing to deal with ruthless, even sadistic criminals, to make the concession that should result in the greater legal and justice good. But putting El Perro's men back on the street is really better than a sharpie who cozens old people. Anyway, Lieberman's novels have improved (the first is the worst and can profitably be skipped, "Lieberman's Folly": but try to read the rest in sequence. Although the plots are fairly discrete, the characters reoccur and we learn more and more about them as we proceed through the books in this series. The characters speak to the heart, mind and imagination that reaches Keatsian goals (if not his genius). This novel has a few main plots--one focussing on Lieberman's partner, his drinking problems, his difficulty in marrying a beautiful Chinese woman (He's big Irish, all the way); another plot strand focusses on Lieberman's difficult daughter, who has basically abandoned her children to Lieberman and his wife--she's remarried, lives in CA, and like so many of us has great difficulty living a life that is not based on depression, obsession with the "cold and analytical"; she blames Lieberman for her problems, but also realizes that his wisdom, his love may be her only chance for happiness (flickers of) and success in marriage with her new black husband. The honesty of the character interactions, their stances and relationships allows us to see characters not as such but as almost Shakespearean, universal, yet individuals that we can palpably touch and, at least partially, understand. This particular novel, of all of Kaminsky's many novels, from several series, sharply, richly, and genuinely etches real people (e.g. Gornitz, Phil Blitzein, Hanranahan, Kearney, Bess, the grandkids and on and on. This novel loves humanity by giving us people and stories, transcending mystery/suspense genre, but working effectively with its requisites, who help us think about life--its joys, its drama, its hypocrisy, its pettiness, and in the case of the dog--a stroke of authorial genious nonpareil--finding a ray of hope in the kindness of a detective, who looks like a weary, somewhat cranky dog (Lieberman), but lights up the lives of so many (sure he's too good to be true) but gives us readers hope that we might make a positive difference and that a life not beset with problems is really not a life at all. Lieberman's insonmia, his slightly acridly ironic humor, his incorrigible daughter and all those criminals, big and small, who make Lieberman's life a means for us to enrich our own. Great book. Also read Russian series and the three Fonesca novels--Kaminsky entertains inexorably, proses beautifully and brings the dectective novel up to a level that only Bill James and Michael Connelly can approximate. Not airline books (Patterson) but still easy to read, and easy to read twice. Read him

5 out of 5 stars Lieberman, a character that lives beyond the page!.......2001-12-19

I love every single book in the Lieberman series but this one is a particular favorite. As always, Lieberman is both worldly wise and all too human, with weaknesses that make him just that more believable and strangely lovable as well.
This time around, Lieberman and his associate, Hanrahan, are trying to guard the ex-wife and son of a mob informant while juggling the daily frustrations of their own lives. While the mystery will keep your attention, what is equally wonderful, to my mind, are Lieberman and Hanrahan, two guys who jump from the pages in vivid detail. Kaminsky is a wonderful writer and I hope more than mystery buffs discover him. He deserves the attention!

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant novel.......2000-12-31

Dark, yet humorous. The entire Lieberman series is fantastic (I've read them all) but this one is the best. The plots are complex yet they move at breakneck speed. You really get involved in the characters and their lives. This cop series focuses on the minds and lives of the police, rather than focusing on the criminals. This series is tops. The only other writers that come close are Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane and S.J. Rozan.

5 out of 5 stars Good police procedural.......2000-11-12

Chicago police officers Abe Lieberman and Bill Hanrahan are partners affectionately dubbed by their peers as the "Rabbi and the Priest". Their latest case involves mob accountant Mickey Gornitz willing to testify against his boss if certain conditions are met. Mickey insists he will only talk with Abe, who was a high school classmate several decades ago. Mickey also demands that his ex-wife and teenage son receive full protection though he has not seem either of them in fifteen years until the informer disappears into the witness protection program. Reluctantly, the Cook County District Attorney's Office agrees.

However, almost immediately after the moment that the Boston cop handed over the former wife and son to Bill, thugs kidnap the duo. When the abduction includes murder, Bill blames himself and not the brass who thought the wife and kid were low priority. As Abe works on a couple of cases and some personal shtick, he tries to help his partner deal with a severe case of depression caused by deep feelings of guilt.

The Abe Lieberman police procedural series is constantly one of the best the sub-genre has to offer. The current tale, THE BIG SILENCE, is an intriguing look at Chicago, various ethnic groups, and relationships. The police investigation is engaging because no great revelation occurs, just hard work. Stuart M. Kaminsky other sleuths (see Rostnikov and Peters) are very good and deserve fan accolades, but clearly neither one holds a candle to the Lieberman books.

    4 out of 5 stars Pleasent reading.......2007-04-15

After 3 novels set in france i found a change of pace and sceanary rather a releif and there are some interesting things contained within. Lord Jurgens fight with the Tzimisce hordes of Hungury for one and the introduction of one of the most famous Tzimsice in history. Even though the main character, Rossamund is a rather annoying posuer at times and yes is rather a lot about mortal concerns like love and so forth like the other reveiws have stated but what they fail to consider is this. The Toreador are the most human the most humane Clan of all the 13 in the world of darkness. They are the most likely to follow the road of humanity and strive to be closer to it, to be immersed in it. They are the Clan of the Rose. I personally was not looking forward to this novel cuz, like most people, i find that the Toreador are my least faverate clan for all the above reasons. Hard core gamers seem to go for the more dark and monsterous and leave the more human fopps to the girls and the bent wristed. But my own personal veiws aside this is a good read. I was pleastently suprised.

2 out of 5 stars Mind you, I have yet to finish this..........2006-02-01

I'm only about half-way through this smallish novel, but I think it's safe to say that I wish I had read the previous review before purchasing. Until Lord Alexander entered the scene you wouldn't have known the story involved vampires at all. Most of the characters are decidedly human-acting, which is not a problem if you're trying to make a realistic character...but come on, this book is about VAMPIRES - the non-realism is already established with the very genre.
Also, the main character of Rosamund is unfortunately simpering and weepy - not at all what I was hoping for when I think of a seductive Toreador courtier. If I have to read another description of her eyes "filling with blood tears" I think I'll just stop altogether.

3 out of 5 stars "Prithee milord, sup thee at my neck.".......2005-06-20

Following in the entourage of Lord Alexander (the ousted Prince of Paris), Rosamund of Islington finally arrives at the court of Jürgen in Magdeburg. Rosamund knows Jürgen from her first diplomatic assignment, when a gift from the Queens of Love went awry. Rosamund was fascinated by Jürgen, and now finds herself torn between him and Alexander.

Alexander has become completely besotted with Rosamund and can't abide anything but complete devotion and obedience. Both of these traits do not come easily to the trained diplomat, and Alexander quickly reveals a petty and vengeful side that frequently takes more of his time than his efforts to get support in retaking Paris. If he cannot control Rosamund he is quite happy ruining everything around her.

Jürgen, who is everything that Alexander is not, is also torn. Not only is he attracted to Rosamund, but he also has been drawn into the Hungarian wars with the pagans. And at home he must defend himself from Alexander's political maneuvering. No matter what he does do, something else suffers.

If this sounds a lot more like a medieval historical romance than a vampire story you would be absolutely right. If it weren't for Alexander's powers as a millennia old vampire, and the presence of a Tremere blood sorcerer, the tale could have been about and court in the dark ages.

I've muttered about this before. Vampires are occult creatures both grim and grisly. There is an upper limit to how much they should imitate the life they have left behind. And they need to do things that make readers think 'Vampire!' on a regular basis. This means more than sipping delicately from a courtier's neck. The decision is yours to make, but there is very little horror or occult in the halls of Magdeburg. The book is well written, it advances the theme of the series, but it's more a tale for vampires, than it is a vampire story.

It is a good quick synopsis. A caring for your newborn cliff notes. They address all the major topics, deciphering cries, poop, bathing, diapering, sleeping, car safety, illnesses etc. If you are going to buy several books regarding your baby than you could do worse than to purchase this one. However, if you only want to purchase one book, get
what to Expect the 1st yr. They have an entire section devoted to newborn care. It basically gives all of the information that you could find in here. Plus, you are able to use it as a resource for more than just the first few weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Best book to prepare for baby!.......2007-08-09

If you read only one book to help you prepare for your new baby, this should be it. It is straightforward and full of information, but not overwhelming or confusing at all. It does not waste a lot of space with excessive or redundent explanations or cutesy humor. My husband (who is a doctor) and I (definitely not a doctor) both love this book, and recommend it to every soon-to-be parent.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-06-21

I am a first time mom and was very nervous about what I was going to do after I had my baby as far as taking care of it. Before I read this book I was very scared and nervous about whether or not I was going to know what to do. This book sets your mind at ease and breaks things down in layman's terms, it doesn't give you more information than you need, and it doesn't give you opinion based information. I recommend this book to the scared first time mom.

5 out of 5 stars Great casserole book.......2006-11-11

This is a great and comprehensive book. It covers breads, breakfasts, meat, vegetarian, and dessert casseroles with make-ahead hints, a list for a well-stocked, casserole-friendly pantry and general casserole tips. I have made at least 8 casseroles (from various categories) in the book and they have all turned out very well. Most were incredibly easy, too. This is my first and only casserole book and I'm very happy with it- I don't think I need another one since I feel like this one covers just about everything.

      5 out of 5 stars Yummy Recipes.......2006-05-30

I haven't made anything from this book yet but they all look really delicious. The only drawback that I can think of is that all of the recipes are unhealthy. Almost every recipe has biscuits or bread products and a lot of cheese in each recipe. It's really not healthy. But every recipe looks delicous and simple and mouthwatering.

5 out of 5 stars Every Busy Family needs this Book!.......2006-05-05

This book is amazing. Most of the recipes are made with staple items you have on hand! No funky seasonings or strange vegetables. Whip up the casserole at naptime, pop it in the oven before dinner, All Set!!!!!! Substitutions are very easy, add some frozen veggies to make it more nutritious!! I can not rave enough about this book. MAny of the brunch casseroles can also serve as dinner. I have now given this book as gifts to expectant mothers.....Huge timesaver, great meals!! Can't go wrong!

      4 out of 5 stars A casserole complete.......2006-02-24

If you're into casseroles, this book is for you! Who knew you could do so much with a 13X9" pan? As someone making a temporary foray into one dish time saving dinners, I love the many options for tasty, albeit not lo-cal dinners and breakfasts. Everything is covered in this book, and I find the tips especially helpful. The introduction has a lot of great recommendations as to what can be made ahead and how to freeze and prepare later. I've made several dishes already, and all have been quite tasty....and pleasing to my toddler! A great companion cookbook when you need to bring a dish to a potluck or need to feed a crowd.

2 out of 5 stars some serious inaccuracies.......2003-04-28

I generally like the DK series, so I thought this one would be good. But there were some serious inaccuracies here. The one that bothered me most was the photo of a kitten tangled in string, titled "if you provide your cats with enough stimulation . . ." Many cat books warn against letting cats play with string or thead as it can cause serious damage passing through the intestines if swallowed. After having to cut a cat free from a big tangle of string, I am careful not to leave it around anymore. In general the book had some good information, but not much of it. I'm finding Think Like a Cat by Pam Johnson-Bennett much more useful. It isn't full of cute pictures, just good information.

5 out of 5 stars the author speaks.......2002-12-04

Hi. I wanted to thank the reviewers for taking the time to read my book. Thanks for all those stars!

Regarding the lone criticism regarding the lack of a section on pregnancy, let me say that both I and the publisher decided not to cover the topic, for one very good reason: we did not want to help add to the already burgeoning cat population. Why would I want to coach people on how to care for the pregnant cat? That amounts to tacit approval of in-home breeding, the main cause of millions of cat euthanasias every year. Millions of pets killed because someone wouldn't spay or neuter, or at least keep the cat indoors. On that note, why would anyone actually have a pregnant cat in the home (besides a professional breeder, that is)? Having an unneutered cat in the home (and presumably wandering the neighborhood) is irresponsible, and cruel. The days of farm ratters are over; to continue to allow cats to mate willy-nilly only serves to increase the misery. Been to a cat shelter lately?

Before pretending to be an authority on cats (as any competent reviewer should be), one should first have the common sense to spay or neuter, don't you think? How else can we take your sage opinions seriously?

4 out of 5 stars Cat Care Redefined.......2002-07-23

I got a little black kitten a few months ago. This being my first cat, I decided to purchase a book that would help me take care of him. I am not sure how I came across this book, but I found it and bought it. I was more than surprised to find that my favorite actor did the forward. This book was very helpful in raising Azrael Walken-Serrine to the healthy cat he is today.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for.......2002-06-06

I see that other reviewers loved this book, but I have to admit that I was disappointed. My cat recently had kittens, and this book was no help at all. It has no section on pregnancy, only a very small section on breeding your cat for profit. Well, this was purely accidental, but I still wanted some help on caring for her during her pregnancy and labor, as well as some tips on caring for the kittens. It doesn't have anything like a section on kitten developmental stages. When do they eat solid food? When can I separate them from their mother? When should I get her fixed so we don't do this again? It also didn't have much on caring for sick or injured cats. What it did have, and I really didn't need, was a section on teaching your cat tricks. Hello! She's a cat, not a dog. I don't really need to teach her tricks. Of course, if you are interested, then this book may help. But it didn't have what I was looking for at all.

5 out of 5 stars Best combination of pictures and words........2002-03-06

I am a new cat owner. I have never had pets before so I have purchased several cat books recently, the Illustrated Cat book and Cats for Dummies. Both were good books but KISS Cat Care offered the best combination of pictures and information, perfect for the new cat owner. The best things about this book were that it included references to websites and offered great tips on training. I definately recommend this book.

      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

        Book Description

Enchanting lady figurine planters were promoted heavily by florists and five-and-dime stores, becoming a gift-giver's favorite during the 1950s and '60s. These lovely ladies were produced mainly in Japan, targeted for the U.S. market, and most commonly adorned with colorful plastic flowers. Today they are rapidly gaining popularity on the ceramics collectibles market. These planters have made limited appearances in head vase and figural planter books, but here, finally, is a comprehensive guide devoted specifically to this fascinating collectible. It focuses on Japanese-manufactured products and features over 350 color photographs of more than 700 planters. Individual captions describe each planter's height, mark, and estimates current market value. Also included is a review of planter production techniques and the various ways they were identified and numbered. As an added bonus, a handy cross-reference provides an easy way for specialty collectors to find their favorite importer such as Lefton, Relpo, or Enesco. Featuring a wonderful variety of planters, from festively painted Christmas ladies to nursery rhyme characters and Valentine sweethearts, this carefully crafted book provides collectors and dealers with a superb reference.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful fitting book.......2006-06-14

I have owned this book for several years. Although I have been sewing for quite some time, I was never very good at altering patterns until I purchased this book. I saw Ruth Oblander on "Sewing with Nancy" and on a number of other sewing shows. I feel that if a person reads from page one and follows the illustrations correctly, she will be able to alter for almost any problem without having to cut up a pattern. Oblander covers nearly every fitting problem imaginable. It is well worth the time to sit down, read and study. This book will save hours of frustration.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing sewing resource!.......2006-05-04

I've been home on bed rest and had the opportunity to read this book cover to cover. It is excellent! As another reviewer mentioned, it is written for an advanced sewer (intermediate at the least) who would not be obligated to look up the oft-used sewing terminology. Definitely reads like a college textbook, but with that said, I really feel as though I've saved myself both time and money by not taking a class based on this method... and believe me, if given the chance, I would have!! Excellent, excellent book! Grab a comfy chair and set your mind to it... it's worth it!

        4 out of 5 stars A lot of information...........2001-07-12

As the other reviewer said, this book is not as user friendly as it could be. That said, however, this book has a massive amount of information to pass on. It is definately written for the experienced sewer. The book details the alterations needed for nearly every body configuration that you can think of. A good index would make this a valuable "cookbook" of solutions for nearly every fitting problem that a person could present, but I don't think it would be fair to concentrate on that shortcoming to the exclusion of all it does offer. As I said, this is for experienced (advanced) sewers. I really appreciate this book and have bookmarked the parts that apply to me and keep in my sewing room so it is available whenever I get a new pattern that needs "adjusting."

3 out of 5 stars The Sew\Fit Manual- A Guide to Making Patterns Fit.......2000-06-19

This book contains some very useful information, but it is not very user-friendly. For example, it is very difficult to refer to the steps outlined by the authors when the book itself will not stay open without breaking the spine. A ring-binding would have been less frustrating. Missing words, confusing diagrams, awkward sentence structure, written in an atmosphere reminiscent of college educational theory courses makes this text hard to "digest". However, I am determined to get past these obstacles because the core imformation seems worth it. I hope that a truly revised edition is planned for the near future.

              Book Description

Black Livingstone is the first book to chronicle the remarkable life of William Henry Sheppard. As a twenty-four-year-old African American missionary in 1890, Sheppard departed for what was then the Belgian Congo, accompanied by Samuel Lapsley, a white man who had grown up on a plantation and was the son of a prominent Alabama judge. Lapsley died of fever barely a year later, but Sheppard thrived in Africa for three more years before returning to America. Back home, Sheppard was billed as the "Black Livingstone" as he traveled the country, lecturing to packed auditoriums. Black and white, rich and poor alike came to hear his true tales of African adventure. One year later he returned to the Congo, where he witnessed and gathered testimony on the genocide being perpetrated by the Belgian government and the rubber companies, eventually helping to break their hold on the region.

Pagan Kennedy unfolds Sheppard's life and times with a novelist's narrative skill and penetrates the complexity of her subject-a man who found power in the Congo but not in the Church to which he dedicated his life, who fought the persecution of Africans but never of blacks in his own country. Beautifully illustrated with archival photographs, Black Livingstone will appeal widely to readers of books on African history such as King Leopold's Ghost and In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz, as well as readers of fiction set in Africa, like Barbara Kingsolver's bestseller, The Poisonwood Bible.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Unknown Black American Explorer.......2003-06-03

I think that this book gives an excellent, detailed look back on a greatly unknown black American explorer, William Henry Sheppard. Pagan Kennedy opens our eyes to history that is left out of history books. The Presbyterian missionary attempts to convert African tribes into "civilized Christians", but in the end fails because of his mishaps and disliking by a white missionary. I recommend this book to anyone interested in studying black American explorers, or anyone looking for information on the Belgium Congo.

5 out of 5 stars The humanitarian at heart.......2003-05-19

Black Livingstone is a remarkable tale, illustrating hardships, history, and the dignity and determination associated with two courageous explorers. Pagan Kennedy accurately portrays 19th century Africa, and shows the light and beauty of the "dark continent". Readers are bombarded with delicate representations of barbaric and striking images. In turn, it enables the reader to experience a deeper feeling of empathy for the abused Africans. This novel raises questions as to whose way of thinking was most primitive. This ironic twist reveals that perhaps the most civilized are the most barbaric by nature. The character Sheppard shows the Pontius Pilate in all of us. That no matter how much we want to strive for goodness, our weaknesses and dark sides, can get the best of us. The novels descriptive nature allows readers to see the intimacy Sheppard shared with the Kuba people, as well as the lack of intimacy he did share with his wife. A notable highlight of this novel is demonstrated when a more tasteless and uncouth side of Sheppard is shown. It showcases the human nature of Sheppard, and most men in general. Although not a difficult read, this book is recommended to those who care for the well being for the human race.

4 out of 5 stars William Sheppard should be better known.......2003-05-06

The life and work of William Sheppard should be better known. He was an African-American who escaped Jim Crow in the U.S. to become a missionary in Africa. He co-founded a Christian mission in Africa where they had been none before and for a time ran it single-handedly. He was also an amateur anthropologist/ethnologist and became the first foreigner to establish contact with the Kuba people of central Africa and to describe their culture to the outside world. On top of all that, he documented the cruelty of the King Leopold's Congo rule. Unfortunately, it is not clear that "Black Livingstone: A True Tale of Adventure in the Nineteenth-Century Congo" by Pagan Kennedy is up to the job of elevating William Sheppard to his rightful place in history. The book is well written, worth reading, and might be valuable to anyone interested in Africa, the Congo, or Christian missionaries, but a lot of the story is missing and is filled in with generalities from Sheppard's time. It may be the case that original documents concerning Sheppard's life are lost, and this is the best that can be done, or perhaps another book can do better. Four stars, but barely.

4 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Congo.......2003-04-15

Pagan Kennedy told the story of a African American missonary who wanted to convert the uncharted parts of the Congo to christianity. William Sheppard, the missionary, was very determined to complete his goal of converting the Congo even if it took his whole life. I Could not put the book down. The book was basically a detailed sum up of what really went on in the Congo. At some points in the book it almost seemed fictional because it was so hard to believe what was happening to him amd the people who were with him. The book was a very good read, but at some points hard to understand but that added to the suspense of the book. Overall the book was a very fun an interesting book to read. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the Congo or who wants to find a good book to read.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many "probablys".......2002-10-26

I agree that Pagan Kennedy is an excellent storyteller, and her telling of William Sheppard's story is spellbinding. Contrary to what some reviewers think, however, there is much more primary material available to the researcher than Kennedy seems to have used. Unfortunately, Black Livingstone is marred by too many suppositions--maybe, probably, perhaps, could have, should have, etc.--and the author attributes attitudes both to Sheppard and his associates that cannot be substantiated from records. William Phipps's biography, William Sheppard: Congo's African American Livingstone, presents a much more balanced picture of this important man's life and service.
