Book Description
"An ingenious mystery and an excellent example of manners and caste systems of the Victorian era."
THE CHATTANOOGA TIMES
While the Ellison girls were out paying calls and drinking tea like proper Victorian ladies, a maid in their household was strangled to death. The quiet and young Inspector Pitt investigates the scene and finds no one above suspicion. As his intense questioning causes many a composed facade to crumble, Pitt finds himself couriously drawn to pretty Charlotte Ellison. Yet, a romance between a society girl and so unsuitable a suitor was impossible in the midst of a murder....

Victorian Serial Killer on the loose.......2007-07-20
It took me three tries to get into this book, but once I got hooked I stayed up late and got up early to finish it. The murder mystery is unpredictable with several convincing red herrings thrown in to pull you off track. In the end, the motive behind the killer's actions are alluded to, but not strongly supported by the storyline. This made the ending slightly unsatisfying. However, the Victorian era's customs and manners is presented with picture-painting detail and seemed believable.
Anne Perry uses a very interesting literary device: we can hear the thoughts of only female characters (not all of them, but we never see inside a male character's mind). This helped to focus (or even exagerate?) the emotional and social distance between the male and female characters. Enjoy the book and the character of Charlotte as she changes over the course of the series.
A great beginning!.......2007-07-03
For anyone who loves series of mysteries, this is a great beginning! I can't wait to read the rest!
Good, Not Great!.......2007-05-14
When I learned that there was a series of Victorian era murder/mysteries I became excited since I was bored with the usual historical romances. Ah, thought I, now for some excitement. In the Cater Street Hangman, the first of this series, the plot is good as mysteries go with any number of red herrings thrown in. The final denouement is a surprise (at least it was to me). However, the characters all seem a bit shallow and story movement is slow. At the outset I thought this would be one of those books where I read the first couple of chapters and set it aside. Not so. After a slow start, the story does indeed pick up with bits and pieces of the puzzle being revealed slowly.
For this reader, however, there are many unanswered questions about dangling story lines. Hopefully, they will be answered in the next book in the series. I've given this book 3 stars based on the originality of the plot.
Fantastic!.......2007-05-14
This was the first book I have read by Anne Perry and it definitely makes me beg for more. She brings this Victorian era to life and the characters just jump off the page. I truly felt the feeling of female repression, along with the underlying fear that another young girl will be murdered. While I've never been a fan of mystery, I couldn't help wondering who it could be. The ending was wonderfully suspenseful - and I would have never guessed the murderer in a million years. Brilliant book.
Limited characterisation and doubtful historical accuracy.......2006-09-09
I had been recommended to read Anne Perry, and told by someone that the first book was one of the best, and was very disappointed by what I discovered. It's one of those books with much "telling" of what characters are feeling and how they are developing rather than "showing" those feelings and developments. It is written in an anachronistic style, doesn't have the true ring of the Victorian era at all. (I am comparing to books written in that era - Dickens, Thackeray, Conan Doyle). The author also does one of my least favourite things, which is to forget key information. (spoiler alert) Inspector Pitt is the one who tells the family the name of Edward's mistress, and they later spend much time and effort trying to hide that fact from him. How amateur.
After reading other glowing reviews of the book - "it all seems immediate and alive", her excellent knowledge of upperclass Victorian England life, "excellent characterisation" - I am left wondering whether maybe I read a different book from everyone else. Perhaps the later books in the series will improve.

The Cater Street Hangman is the first of Anne Perrys Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. Set in the Victorian era, it is an elegant and complex mystery full of well-drawn characters and rich period detail. When a maid in the upper class Ellison household is strangled, Inspector Pitt is called in to investigate. He finds a world ruled by strict manners and social customs, where the inhabitants of the Ellisons neighborhood appear to be more outraged by the thought of scandal than they are by murder. Inspector Pitt finds a most unlikely ally in Charlotte, the Ellisons spirited daughter. But as the murders continue, Charlotte and Pitt find themselves drawn together by more than the investigation. 10 Hours 3 Minutes

A gender.bender mystical romp.......2005-11-17
In the best tradition of Douglas Adams, we have a quartet of nearly normal, quite spaced out individuals in a quest to give Life a meaning: Mark, disillusioned actor, Mary Anna the zonked psychiatrist, Ronan the collector of weird books and mystic rewriter of Moby Dick, and Cora, your friendly neighborood vampire. Togheter they will brave ultramondane terrors, ponder on the sex of the Angels and give the reader a terrific good time, between paradoxes à la Rucker and mysticism à la Philip K. Dick. Not to mention a satire of New Age Dark Side buffs and Scientologists.
A little known masterpiece that continues a great tradition inaugurated by Kurt Vonnegut and Kilgore Trout's "Venus on the half-shell": the mystical-satyrical quest!
Book Description
Every child has "ornery" moments, but more than 1 in 20 American children exhibit behavioral problems that are out of control. For readers struggling with an unyielding or combative child, YOUR DEFIANT CHILD: EIGHT STEPS TO BETTER BEHAVIOR offers the understanding and guidance they need. Drawing on Dr. Russell A. Barkley's many years of work with parents and children, the book clearly explains what causes defiance, when it becomes a problem, and how it can be resolved. Readers learn tools and strategies for establishing clear patterns of discipline, communicating with children on a level they can understand, and reducing family stress overall. Filled with helpful charts, questionnaires, and checklists, YOUR DEFIANT CHILD helps parents get their child's behavior back on track and restore harmony in the home.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for parents.......2007-10-05
My pediatrician recommended this book when I expressed concerns over power struggles I was having with my daughter. Initially I took the book out of the library - then had to buy it because frankly - I can't do without it now.
Debra Brown: Your Defiant Child.......2007-07-26
I have found this book to be very helpful in dealing with one of my clients. It was in excellent shape as promised and I would purchase from this seller again.
EXCELLENT ADVICE.......2007-04-04
I'VE READ MANY BOOKS ON CHILDREN AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM. THIS WAS THE BEST BY FAR. IT IS AN EASY READ AND THE PROGRAM ABSOLUTELY WORKS, AS LONG AS YOU ARE CONSISTENT.
This book has changed our lives........2006-01-03
We recently took our 4 year old to a psychologist to be evaluated for social/emotional/behavior problems. He recommended that we implement a token economy system. While searching for information on token economy systems for kids, I stumbled upon this book. I liked that in addition to philosophical discussion about children with behavior problems it also gave you a ton of practical advice. I use this book as a manual. It has completely turned our 4 year around. I believe that if I had read it two years ago, we never would have seen these behavior problems. His advice is clear, simple, and works. Thank you Dr. Barkley!
Handle your child with love.......2005-05-18
I read the book in 2001. It has impressed me ever since. I have several books on this subject. I consider this book is the best.
The book provides you with the principles and methods to handle a very stubborn kid (but not the kid with a mental disorder).
For example, the biggest thing a kid needs is love. But what is love concretely? It is an attention. It is the time that we spend with the kid. But how to spend the time effectively? It is not by controlling him/her. It is by giving him/her the freedom to enjoy the time spent together.
I have not followed exactly the methods provided in the book, but the concept has been very useful for me to deal with my child.

Limited Value.......2004-12-16
This book tries to cover everything and succeeds at very little. It covers everything from how to build a smoker from a used refrigerator to recipes. But.. none of these topics are covered extensively or very well.
The illustrations are weak; the recipes are very weak; and, the general process discussions are haphazardly organized.
I bought this book on the strength of the other reviews, but am very disappointed.
My Old Buddy.......2004-06-17
I purchased this book WAY back in the late 70's when I was a meat smoking fool. Many years have past since those smoky days and now I find that I'm back at it again. (Smoking meat that is)Sadly my old copy of this book did not withstand the rigors of time...May it RIP! I was THRILLED when I found my old trusted friend listed here on Amazon.
This is a GREAT book if you're just starting or if you've been doing the smoking thing for years. You get recipes for different kinds of brines, seasonings, basting techniques and just about anything else you'll need to know for smoking.
This is a MUST HAVE book IMO! You can't beat the detailed in depth instructions on how to smoke and cure just about anything. I'm glad to see that after all those years this book is still right on top, this speaks volumes of how good a book it really is.
Ciao!
Useful Smoking Advice.......2001-11-20
This book discusses smokers you can build, or purchase instead, and also gives tips on how to run your smoker for optimum results. Various fuels to use in smokers are mentioned as well. There is also a chapter on brines and seasonings, and several chapters on how to smoke different foods, including turkey, cheese, sausage, fish, beef, nuts, wild game, and much more. Another book you may find of interest is THE QUICK AND EASY ART OF SMOKING FOOD by Chris Dubbs and Dave Heberle.
An old but good reference book........1998-12-26
I've owned this book since 1972, then gave it to a friend. Now ordering another. Excellent fish brine! Unfortunately there is no index and a confusing "table of contents" but after I've brined and smoked over 1000 lbs of salmon/stugeon with rave reviews I would say it is a book worth the cost. A great seasoned salt recipe is also included.
Good on process, low on recipe's.......1998-11-14
The book covers the process of smoking well. Good information on brining, sausage making, and processing smoked foods is provided. It lacks fundamental data such as internal temperatures of smoke cook meats. A few recipes are presented, but this is not a cookbook.
Book Description
Veterinarians are seeing an explosion of health problems in cats, dogs, and horses — chronic diseases, immunological illnesses, cancer, and more. Conditions thought to affect only one breed are showing up in others. This illustrated book explores the causes and treatments. During the past 30 years of clinical work, renowned veterinarian Dr. Alfred Plechner has identified a widespread but unrecognized deficiency in the endocrine-immune system of these animals that is wreaking havoc on the pet population. Pets at Risk is his proven program of intervention and care. The book is designed to be used jointly by pet owners and vets, since part of the treatment involves pharmaceuticals along with a healthy diet and careful attention to food allergies. Positive results from Dr. Plechner’s practice and that of other vets show how these illnesses can be minimized or even eradicated. This guide truly offers a breakthrough method for keeping your pets healthy and safe from risk.
Customer Reviews:
finally, a concrete diagnosis, and a happy dog.......2005-01-28
I read this book when my dog was so sick wth chronic ear infections (that were not responding to the typical prescription drugs) that she had to have 2 benadryl every 4 hours--and this is when she was already on a hypoallergenic diet. Three vets said she had food allergies (she did appear to react worse to some foods, and did somewhat better on duck and potato). Two vets said to try an elimination diet. We did, and could hardly add any thing back, as she NEVER seemed to get healthy enough after reacting to a new food to add another food. Well, I read this book in one sitting, and made an appointment immediately with the one vet in our state who is familiar with E&I dogs and Plechner. Our dog tested positive for the disorder--her cortisol levels were less than half than that of a healthy dog. She has only been on the medications for a few days, and she's stopped shaking her head and licking her paws. She's got her old playful attitude back--she hadn't wanted to play her favorite game for a couple of months. The best part is that she will very likely be able to eat well-rounded diet when she's better stabilized. What looked like food allergies was most likely food intolerances caused by her imbalance. Most E&I dogs can eat normal diet unless they have "true" food allergies.I'm in raptures because without this book, my dog would more than likely have struggled all her life with these problems, been treated symptomatically for what was a whole body glandular disorder, and continued to have a poor quality of life. This book is easy to read, compassionate and straightforward. Plechner pulls no punches- the test is expensive, and the medication regimen is usually for life. But he gives countless examples of diseases and symptoms that are often caused by E&I imbalance-- it's amazing and heartening to read that countless problems occur when the animal isn't making enough cortisol, and that these problems are fixable. He gives info technical enough to help any vet treat your animal--even if the vet has never diagnosed an E&I dog before. He sternly explains that E&I treatment won't fix true food allergies---but it will more than likely make symptoms caused by other kinds of allergies disappear. I am buying this book for friends who have chronically sick dogs, and lending my copy out to anyone who is curious. It's well worth the investment. My dog will be the first to agree!
Stresses the responsibilities pet owners face.......2004-04-03
Veteranrian Alfred J. Plechner (a practicing graduate from the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with thirty-five years of clinical work experience), draws upon his years of experience and considerable expertise in Pets At Risk: From Allergies To Cancer, Remedies For An Unsuspected Epidemic spotlights just how endocrine-immune imbalances can cause or exacerbate multiple medical disorders in our beloved animal companions. Offering practical advice for helping imbalanced dogs and cats with supplements; natural remedies for a variety of possible ailments; diet replacement programs, and so much, more, Pets At Risk also stresses the responsibilities pet owners face, as well as exploring the implications these groundbreaking discoveries have for we humans. Pets At Risk is essential, accessible, "reader friendly", and very strongly recommended for personal reading lists and community library Pet Care reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
A 'must read' for pet owners.......2004-03-12
A friend sent me the Plechner book, "Pets At Risk". It went with me on vacation to Puerto Rico, where I read it cover to cover. There I was by the pool, reading avidly about canine endocrine disorders.
This is an absolutely enthralling read for anyone who cares about their pets' health. Vets have significantly improved their abilities to diagnose diseases, but are still grappling with treating the result versus treating the underlying cause. As an owner who has dealt with issues ranging from cancer to skin allergies to Addison's disease, I found Dr. Plechner's observations and insights providing "Aha!" moments.
I've already ordered books for each of my vets, in order to discuss whether this treatment could work with some long-term issues in some of our pets.
Cassie sends her thanks to Dr. Al.......2004-01-16
Good morning Dr. Plechner,
Just a note to say thank you. "Cassie", my Irish Setter who brought us together, turned 6 on New Years Eve.
If you recall, she became ill with terrible skin allergies at 5 months old. No veterinarian, including Dr. Goldstein, specialists at Virgina Tech or NC State could help. Then I called you. Today she has an excellent EI-1 and takes Transfer Factor Canine Complete by 4-Life Research. She is down to 2mg Medrol a day and .2 Soloxine twice a day.
"Cassie" is happy and active. We call her the gate keeper as she escorts our other dogs in and out of their play areas.
Thank you for all you do. My breeding program will benefit Irish Setters because of your help.
Hugs!
Arlene D. Pilcer

Treating The Immune Problem - Not Just The Symptoms.......2003-10-26
"Pets at Risk" offers a solution to the root of the problem, a hormonal imbalance that directly effects the immune system. Dr. Plechner treats the actual source of immune dysfunction not just the symptoms of an immune problem (such as allergies). This not only enables the animal's own body to recover from the illness or disease, but wards off future sickness that result from a weakened or sensitive immune system. So many treatments only deal with the symptoms, then the problem returns soon thereafter. Dr. Plechner's treatment offers a solution, for pet's such as my own dog, who did not respond to previous treatments.
I read Dr.Plechner's first book "Pet Allergies", and through his help and the help of our veterinarian, my dog lives a healthy life now. A few years ago, I had lost hope after other treatments had not worked to correct my dog Sophia's immune problem; which manifested as allergies, severe skin problems, ear infections, diarreah, and bacterial infections. After learning about Dr. Plechner's treatment to correct the imbalance and restore the immune system, I asked my vet to test Sophia for Endocrine-Immune Imbalance. My vet graciously agreed in order to help my dog get better. There is a very detailed chapter in "Pets at Risk" for veterianians and owners who wish to test (and treat) Endocrine-Immune Imbalance. There is also a chapter for breeders wishing to breed only healthy animals and how they can go about doing so.
Dr. Plechner discovered and researched (for three decades) a connection he found among animals with immune disfunction. It involves a common hormonal imbalance, due to a defective adrenal gland, that directly affects the immune system. It can manifest as kidney or liver disease, auto-immune disease, cancer, epilepsy, IBS, arthritis, FIP, FIV, FeLV, urinary disorders, allergies and many other immune diseases. The common thread is a defective adrenal gland hormone that effects the thyroid and Total Estrogen hormones which greatly effects the animal's immune system. He has studied this defect in dogs, cats and horses.
My mother's cat had suffered Eosinophilic Granuloma for years. Several vets had tried to help her with common treatments but none of them were successful. My mother's vet contacted Dr. Plechner and he walked her through the steps of the Endocrine-Immune blood test and then through treatment to correct the Endocrine-Immune Imbalance and restore Pumpkin's immune system. Today Pumpkin is a healthy cat with normal hormone and immunoglobulin levels because she was treated for Endocrine-Immune Imbalance. She has not had any lesions since treatment and has been on treatment now for two years.
Many of Dr. Plechner's ill patients were referred to him by other veterinarian's as a last resort before euthanasia, a lot of these animals recovered and remained on the treatment for 10 years or more and lived healthy lives. I cannot express how much his work has changed the life of two sick pets in our family and the people who love them. His decades of research have helped thousands of animals-many thought to be untreatable-live healthy, normal lives, .
I have been keeping up to date on his research and work and it is now being used by M.D.s to treat humans with the same imbalance that has lead to immune disorders.
I think "Pets At Risk" is going to be one of the most influential books in veterinary medicine of our time.
I am just so glad I found out about Endocrine-Immune Imbalance and the treatment. Many owners, veterinarians, breeders and animals have already benfitted from Dr. Plechner's work as a reseacher and veterinarian-I hope there are many more who do in the future because of this book.

Want to know if the ore cart is over-priced?.......2003-09-01
If you are a student of mining history or a collector of western paraphernalia, you should buy this book. The authors have managed to track down most of the tools and other related historical items from the early days of mining. There is an abundance of information on small items such as candleholders, carbide lamps, and assay tools plus the larger items such as ore carts, Pelton wheels, and stamp mills. Pictures of many items plus price ranges give the novice somewhere to begin and the more experienced collector, an excellent reference book.

Customer Reviews:
Easy as Pie.......2005-08-10
The book itself is beautifully done- easy to follow recipes, clear how-to photos, and big photos of the finished dishes. It's fun just to look through the pages, even if you're not planning to cook that particular day. The recipes offer something for everyone- easy soups to desserts, chocolates to fruits, meats, fish, vegetarian. You can create fantastic dishes that look gourmet-complicated, and try new flavors without investing in a long list of weird ingredients. If you have the basics in your pantry, you'll be able to make nearly every dish. As for the desserts, keep a supply of heavy/double cream, as it seems to be one of the "3-4" ingredients in most dessert recipes. (Although, if you do have the cream, you'll be tempted to make a new dessert each night!)
I love to cook, and have shelves of cookbooks, but this has quickly become my favorite cookbook because the recipes are both simple and gorgeous. I got my copy on sale, but it's well worth buying at any price. Enjoy.

This invaluable publication surveys the history of printmaking with a particular focus on artists and works that expand the boundaries of various media, including woodcuts, etchings, engravings, lithographs, mezzotints, screenprints, and more, right up to the digital and photographic processes of today.
Customer Reviews:
A highly recommended acquisition for art library collections.......2001-04-05
An outstanding presentation and recommended pick for discriminating art library collections. David Platzker's Hard Pressed gathers 600 years of prints and technical information, from woodcuts and etchings to digital modern processes. This is much more than a collection of print images however; text provides a running history which includes profiles of key artists, discussions of technical advancements, and insights on print reproduction changes. Black and white and color photos abound.
You'll Be Hard Pressed to Find A Better Book on Prints.......2001-01-06
This book brilliantly tells the story of the history of the "fine art print" from a fresh prospective. It begins around 1400, when papermaking was introduced to Europe from the East, and the development of woodblock printmaking enabled the creation of the first woodcut prints. What follows is 600 years of technological and artistic innovation: by the 1450s, the printing press had been invented, allowing bibles and broadsheets, as well as simple, devotional pictures to be produced quickly and cheaply. Words and images, with their information and ideas, became available not just to an elite few, but to ordinary people.
The books two essays by Wyckoff and Platzker detail the development of printmaking though artistic experimentation to create a distinctive art form, how new processes allowed images with specific visual characteristics-from early, rough woodcuts, to more refined linear methods such as etching and engraving; from the delicate tonal approaches of mezzotint and aquatint to recent computerized techniques. It delves in particular into how some artists embraced new methods matching innovative techniques with visual invention; while others subverted them.
Artists such as Rembrandt in the 17th century and Edward Ruscha in the 20th century are shown to have conceived of the print as a virtually unique object. The approach is informed by the 20th century notion of the "original print" produced in small, limited editions, continuing the tradition of printmaking as a fine art.
In this book, which accompanies a traveling exhibition, details how printmaking has throughout its history been both a medium for communicating ideas of all kinds and an arena for artistic invention. Imagine for a moment the world without books or newspapers, without posters or postcards. Then follow the history of experimentation and artistic vision that is presented here to discover printmaking as an art form of unexpected possibilities.
Book Description
From the creators of the original, bestselling children’s “issue” series, First Time Books®, comes a practical, down-to-earth guide to handling the very toughest parenting challenges.
Combining humor with the trademark homespun common sensibility that parents have come to depend upon from Stan and Jan Berenstain, each chapter of The Bear Essentials covers a specific tricky or worrisome passage of child-rearing.
For example, “No Two Alike” is about promoting individuality and self-esteem. “Weighing in on Obesity” deals with one of the most serious and rapidly emerging problems among the under 12 set. “Expletives Deleted—Please!” helps parents cope with foul language.

Book Gives Hope for the Future.......2001-01-03
Rachleff, labor historian who "studies the past because he is interested in the future", writes the perfect and much needed antidote to Barbara Koppel's Academy Award-winning documentary about the Hormel Strike, a film that cast the P-9ers and their supporters as "hapless victims" engaged in a hopeless cause. As an academic AND an activist who personally participated in this struggle and became the chair of the Twin Cities P-9 Support Committee, Rachleff succeeds in putting things into their proper historical perspective, describing the betrayal of a community by a formerly paternalistic family owned corporation (and a DFL governor) and a rank-and-file by their own international union, but most importantly, he inspires all working stiffs by showing union democracy in action and the potential of a movement that motivates family, friends, and workers from around the country. The final chapter outlines the positive lessons drawn from these experiences and gives hope for the future of the labor movement. This is a must read for any union member and anyone thinking that they need a union.
Rachleff spotlights the working class.......1998-01-15
Peter Rachleff writes this narrative of the Hormel Strike from the prospective of the common man. His unique vantage into the Labor movement is both intriguing and compelling. He breaks with the standard fodder of analyzing union structure and instead delves into the plight of the "every-man" (i.e. the rank-and-filer). Excellent.
