Better than her first, a delicious mystery........2006-03-18
Many mysteries center around food. You will find that several of the great mystery series have large and elaborate meals included throughout the course of the plot. Ms. Carl does one better by including almost everyone's favorite food - chocolate. I love the descriptions of the type of chocolates that TenHuis makes. She doesn't just say "So and so bought a raspberry bon bon" but includes what it's made of and how Nettie makes it. I especially loved the description of how they make the hollowed out chocolate bears with all the goodies inside in this particular book. I enjoyed the plot more in this story (I refuse to give anything away!), as it appears Ms. Carl's talent as a mystery writer improves with each book. There was just as much scandal involved as the first, but I thought the way the story was handled was clever. I can see she steers clear of conventional mystery plots while making her readers' mouths water. This is definitely a wonderful new series and I hope there are lots more to come.
Book and Bon Bons.......2004-03-29
JoAnna Carl's second book, "The Chocolate Bear Burglary" in her chocolate mysteries immerses the reader completely into small town life in the chocolate business.
JoAnna Carl does such a great job that I now have over $200 worth of chocolate coming from Morgen Chocolate in Dallas - the shop that she actually based her stories on. Unfortunately, they have an online website! LOL Actually, it was kind of neat because you can actually see some of the various types of candies that the author describes in her series.
I thought that it was so neat that she also based this mystery in part on the antique chocolate molds. Oh...went on eBay and they just got a shipment in from Belgium of antique molds. Actually, resisted them =but again, how neat to look at them.
This second book was even better than the first and was belivable in plot and dialogue. Lee's tongue twisting impediment still gets on my nerves and it is just a little too cute in the words that DO come out - but it was a little more "bearable." The one criticism is that I thought the Teddybear Event in Warner Pier could have been expounded upon at the end. It was described in the beginning and we really don't hear too much more about it.
The mystery aspect was very good as I didn't realize until the end who was involved in the murders. This is a light, but truly enjoyable series.
CHOCOLics revenge........2003-07-10
This is a great mystery complete with chocolate what
better combination can you have. I loved it emmensely.
Delicious food mystery!.......2003-04-01
JoAnna Carl is another of the great cozy mystery writers writing in the food genre that has become so popular. If you like Tamar Myers or Joanne Pence, you will enjoy JoAnna Carl.
We start our tale, in the winter, with Lee, a heroine displaced from Texas, to Western Michigan. Lee has taken on the daunting task of looking after the business side of her aunt's chocolate factory and store, TenHuis. While she can work magic with a ledger, Lee has the troublesome problem of saying the wrong thing all of the time.
We follow Lee as one problem after another falls into her unsuspecting hands. With her everpresent verbal bumblings, her inteligence is easily called into question, but as it all plays out, she does find a way to extract herself, and her loved ones from all of the messes. (I won't give details, as I DESPISE spoilers!)
She also includes little tidbits of trivia about the appearance of chocolate in older works of mystery. Those segements are fascinating.
Too Sweet.......2003-03-29
This book is too sweet for my taste. Former Texas Beauty Princess Lee McKinney, now cocoa bean counter in her Aunt's shop in the "Tourism Central" Western Michigan fictional town of Warner Pier, Michigan, is amateur sleuthing through the snow. Stir in non-sequitur "Chocolate Chat" tidbits and the heroine's "tang tonguele" (tongue tangling impediment) and you have a too-cutesy-by-half milk chocolate mess that melts in your hands. A light read.......2007-08-15
This title is second in the Chocoholic Mysteries series. Once again you are given a light mystery that is easy to follow. An excellent book to read while waiting in line or traveling via plane.
I could have done without the quirky habit the heroine has of substituting words with other words when she is nervous. However, the fact that the heroine is not perfect adds to her charm.
I look forward to reading the next title in the series.

THE POWER OVER LIFE AND DEATH
They called him Pelbrun the Brown Magician. He'd been plain old marketing consultant Pel Brown until the day a mystic doorway had appeared in his basement. That improbable portal had led him and his family to the magic land of Faerie; another had opened the way to the super-science universe of the Galactic Empire.
But this was no fairy tale . . .
At first Pel had sought the key that would take them safely home. But before he could wrest the matrix of magic away from the despot Shadow, Pel's wife and daughter were brutally murdered. Neither absolute control over the matrix nor rulership of Faerie could ease the pain in Pels heart--until he realized that the matrix held power over life and death!
So this once-ordinary man set out to overturn the irrefutable laws of mortality. But even his newfound omnipotence couldn't protect him from the pitfalls that lay ahead, as both the Empire and Earth's military sought to exploit his incredible power. Then the Empire invaded Faerie--forcing Pel to fight in order to keep his dreams alive . . .

A kind of disappointing end.......2007-01-18
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the first two books in this series, but the final one was a bit of a let-down for me. A lot of it near the end is rather tedious. Still, worth reading.
Hardcover please!.......2007-01-16
All of Lawrence Watt-Evans books are wonderful. Please print these in hardcover though!!! I hope somebody is listening out there.
I loved this book!.......2005-10-24
This book is the third and final book of the Three Worlds trilogy. In this book, Pellinore Brown, now known as Pelburn the Brown Magician, is determined to use the matrix magic of Shadow to resurrect his wife and daughter. This is a terribly complex undertaking, and he requires a good deal of time to master the matrix magic. But, time is something that he may not have, and before he knows it, Pel finds himself at war with the Galactic Empire. It's blasters versus sorcery, and Pel has the magic of an entire universe at his command. Pel seems to hold all the cards, but what will this war cost him?
I must start out by saying that I am a big fan of Lawrence Watt-Evans, and was enthralled by his Three Worlds trilogy. I enjoyed the way that the author constructed his three universes, and then wove them together. This book is something of a departure from the other two. Shadow is dead at the beginning of this book, and you might be lulled into thinking that not much is left to happen. But, in fact the author does do a great job of maintaining the drama and suspense right up to the end.
As for me, I absolutely loved this book! I loved the setting, I found the story to be engaging, and the characters enjoyable. This is another great Lawrence Watt-Evans series, and I highly recommend it to you!

A treasured resource, this book empowers parents by arming them with the knowledge, expert guidance, and confidence they need to ensure that their child with ADHD receives the best care possible. Dr. Barkley explains what the latest research reveals about the nature of ADHD, its causes, and the most effective treatment strategies. Described are the problems that children with the disorder typically face as they grow from toddlerhood through adolescence, and associated challenges facing the whole family. Drawing on decades of influential clinical work and research, the book provides concrete suggestions for improving children's behavior and school performance, enhancing their self-esteem, and restoring harmony to the home.

Still one of the best books about children's ADHD.......2007-10-07
Dr. Barkley,
When my son's ADHD/ODD behavior got out of control, your writing helped me to understand my child's unique mindset so that I could learn how to fulfill his needs.
I appreciate your no-nonsense approach to explaining ADHD. I would rather face the truth of ADHD than to idealize it with pretty metaphors.
When I accepted the fact that ADHD will not go away, and it takes massive and immediate action to overcome it, I got busy helping my son.
Yes, I had to change my ways, but my son is worth it. That was eight years ago. Now he is 17, making Bs in school, and planning to attend college.
The magic began when I improved my communication skills and taught my son values and skills. That was only possible with the diligent use of a visual reward system, a token economy system, as recommended by you, Dr. Barkley.
Thank you, Sir, for courageously risking controversy by explaining the facts about ADHD.
The children of the world with ADHD and their parents need more straight shooters like you.
That is why I'm committed to bring more real facts about ADHD and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) to the fore with free informative reports.
I hope to one day shake your hand.
Sincerely yours in parenting success,

Vincent Schiavelli's enchanting, sometimes deeply moving memoir with recipes, Bruculinu, America, is a warmly recalled distortion of Brooklyn, one of New York City's boroughs, as it really was. As Schiavelli says, "The stories may not always contain the strict facts, but they certainly tell the truth." Don't be surprised if his beautiful reminiscence of the miracle (which took place before he was born!) that saved his uncle Salvatore Calogero from dying of pneumonia brings a tear to your eye.
Schiavelli, a successful actor, writes scenes so vividly that you participate as he visits a strega, or witch, who exorcised him of a medical problem when he was nine years old. (After seeing a doctor, Schiavelli's mother figured that in case the condition was caused by malocchio, the evil eye, it would be wise to cover all bases.)
Schiavelli's recollections often involve his grandfather, Papa Andrea, a Sicilian master chef. The 70 or so recipes in this enchanting book come from him. The Baked Mashed Potatoes made with peas and grated cheese and fennel-flavored Pasta with Chickpeas are delicious everyday dishes. Baked Macaroni, rich with mushrooms, ground meat, and a touch of cinnamon, is for Sundays. Cucciaddatu are the buttery, log-shaped Christmas cookies filled with nuts and raisins that each Sicilian cook makes in his or her own way. Here, cocoa powder, honey, and cognac add nuances to the nubbly filling. The only frustrations with Bruculinu, America are that its compact size makes it hard to keep one's spot while cooking from it, and that the recipes are woven through the text in no logical order; to return to something in particular, it's necessary to consult a list at the back of the book. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
"In the early 1950s, Bruculinu, as the Sicilian immigrants called their Brooklyn neighborhood, was a remarkable place. If the weather was fair, the streets would be teeming with life. Women would be haggling with pushcart vendors in Sicilian and broken English over pieces of fruits and vegetables. Other vendors in horse-drawn wagons would be chanting their wares amid the song of the ragman's bell and the iceman's bellow. Growing up in this place was like having one foot in mid-twentieth-century United States and the other in mid-eighteenth-century Sicily." So begins Vincent Schiavelli's captivating story of coming of age in the Italian section of Brooklyn. In a series of witty vignettes, Schiavelli describes the social customs and secret recipes he learned from his grandfather, a Sicilian master chef, as well as the tenements, gangs, dances, holiday celebrations, and funerals that defined the culture of the neighborhood.

Reminds me of my childhood........2005-02-09
I saw this book and needed to read it. After all, I am also Sicilian and born and raised in Brooklyn (though a good many years after Mr. Schiavelli.) His memories brought back a great deal of my own; often ones I had forgotten. I thank him for this. From the street vendors with their horses to the people sharing stories on their stoops to the men's only clubs and the strega exorcising the evil eye - It is all as I remember it, too. If anyone says that this book isn't true to Brooklynites and to Italians, they must not be either.
Enjoy it, it is true treasure!
Eased my pain.......2001-10-31
I read this book with one arm. I had just broken my elbow in late 1998, and this book took me into another, happier world and literally eased my pain. You'll love the stories of a bygone era told with with love.
Thanks, Vincent, for easing my pain with your wonderful book.
First rate.......2000-11-01
I originally bought this book because I have always been interested in ethnic neighborhoods. Having lived in Italy for the last ten years I was more skeptical about the recipes. Having said that, while I was reading the book it was clear that Schiavelli knew what he was talking about. Myself and my wife (who is Italian) have been consistently ecstatic about the results of the recipes.
The Best!.......2000-09-27
I bought this book when it first came out, and it was loaded with nostalgia for me and my family, as well as recipes that were enticing (although they can get a bit complex.) A must read for any Italian-American with roots in Brooklyn or without, and anyone who loves a good story
Sad Sack.......2000-08-09
This book is about as sophisticated and representative of Italian culture as a Big Mac. I would say to Mr. Schiavelli, stick to acting, but the acting is just another version of predictable caricature, just like his books. Honestly, this has nothing to do with the real Italian experience, New York or otherwise.
Wish I could give this book half a star, since the paper it's printed on is nice.

Interesting and pretty - a review of the basics.......2005-09-06
I found it to be a decent book and some of the photos are just gorgeous. The book's title is completely apt... the Simplicity of Dressage as the content in this book is simple in it's message. The core is completely sound (e.g. Rhythm and relaxation, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness, and collection) and is an important reminder of the basic principles of dressage for those new to the sport or to those who want an easy read as a refresher.
What did disappoint me was minimal commentary for those of us with less than ideal circumstances... tips for achieving those principles when you're not an international competitor or riding professional or don't have the brilliant mover, talented olympic prospect etc... Simple as the concepts are, rhythm and relaxation, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness, and collection are often a challenge due to confirmation issues (in both horse and rider sometimes!) and some discussion of achieving these basics in the face of common problems would have been more helpful for me anyway. It also felt a little bit like a biography on the careers of the van Baalen's.
An overview of the German Training Scale.......2004-06-06
Before finding yourself in a never-ending cycle of tension with your horse, invest in this book. From cover to cover, the entire subject of this book is the six elements of the German training scale: Rhythm and relaxation, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness, and collection. In clear and concise language, this book illustrates that you cannot progress to one level before establishing the one before. It proves that before you ask for impulsion, you must have contact, and if you encounter tension in collection, you go back to relaxation. In other words, the authors successfully bring dressage within grips of every rider by providing solid building blocks to progressive dressage training.
Each element of the training scale is explained thoroughly. Potential problems are addressed with practical, easy solutions. By absorbing this information, you'll find that dressage is surprisingly simple...hence the title. Beware, though, that there is no intense detail as there is in other dressage books. For example, you won't find a 5-page description of the half-halt. You won't find a step-by-step instruction of the half-pass. You will, however, realze the importance of working by a system and you will see it reflecting on your horse.
A beautifully bound book and a joy to flip through with its numerous color photos. Definitely worth reading regardless of your level.
Easy to understand, technically correct, beautiful photos.......2004-04-10
Hinnemann is an accomplished rider and trainer. He studied with the great Reiner Klimke, who was, in turn a student of Harry Boldt, Sr. This means that Hinnemann's dressage education is as good as it gets. Successful dressage training requires patient, systematic work to improve the horse's rhythm, relaxation, acceptance of the bit, impulsion, straightness, and collection. This book shows how some of Europe's foremost trainers develop these critical qualities in their horses. Several of the examples and vignettes use top competition horses, but some focus on ponies and more average horses, making the book's content accessible and relevant to a wide audience of riders. If you want a horse that is balanced, obedient, and sound in mind and body, you should read this book. An beautiful pictures and simple language are an added plus. The book contains many important ideas in an "easy to read" format.

Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2007-09-09
This is an excellent collection from Bead and Button magazine. The photos are clear. There is a 'shopping list' for each project and well written directions. Even though I have subcribed to Bead and Button for several years, this is a great collection of seed bead projects.I appreciate the variety of projects. Now I don't have to dig through piles of magazines to find a cool project.
Any library strong in jewelry-making references will find this a fine addition........2007-03-12
The Best of Bead&Button Magazine: Seed Bead Savvy covers the tiny seed beads that play a big part in beaded jewelry making. They can be used in conjunction with an overall design with other beads or can stand alone as their own creations: this book shows how, from locating seed beads which are perfect for a project to stringing and blending colors. Any library strong in jewelry-making references will find this a fine addition.

Ornate Designs.......2006-10-31
Seed Bead Savvy presents simple and sophisticated designs with full color photography, clear illustrations and detailed editorial-tested instructions. Seed beads are tiny beads or building blocks of jewelry design, but in this book they create stunning designs with ornate elements.
If you can't walk past a bead store without going in and buying more beads, then this book is a must-have for your collection. Whether you are just starting to make jewelry or are looking for a new fascinating design, this book has something for every level of expertise, but seems to focus more on artistic interpretations and more complex items like fringed collars.
The first chapter explores the basic types of seed beads and then shows the materials and tools you need for the specific beads you will be using.
A few of the intriguing designs include:
Reading a Pattern - Ideas for reading a geometric tapestry pattern to make a decorative wall hanging with seed beads. The results have an added shimmer effect that you wouldn't achieve with cross-stitch patterns. The Embroidered portrait gives detailed information on how to create your own pattern from a picture or photograph.
Woven Pendant - A loomed pendant with a fringe. Looks very exotic!
Wildflower Purse - Beautiful design for a tiny purse with fringe
Ecuadorian Lace Collar - A gorgeous exotic gold necklace.
Herringbone Collar - An elegant choker with seed beads and pearls. Fancier than just a string of pearls and the colors they use would make this perfect for the holiday season. You could make earrings and a bracelet to match, although patterns are not included for specific matching items.
This would make a perfect gift for anyone who loves beading because there are detailed instructions for basic designs at the start, a few patterns for easy necklaces and then challenges to look forward to when you master the basic techniques.

Way beyond beginner.......2003-04-05
This book is your standard seed bead how-to fare. First you learn the stitches, followed by projects using the stitches. The trouble with this book is that the projects are far beyond beginner level. If you are just starting out with seed beads, their size alone is daunting, so look for a book with easier projects.
Art of Seed Beading.......2002-02-23
I was disappointed not to find more jewelry patterns in this book. The first chapters have very helpful and enlightening descriptions about types of seed beads and how they are made. The instructions on basic stitches are well-described, also; however, I found many of the projects themselves to be of little general interest given what one finds in most other beading books. (I realize that this could be my own bias!) With a title as general as "the Art of Seed Beading," I thought there would be more instructions on how to alter basic techniques such as peyote or netting to create unique pieces. I did like a couple of the projects, though, and I found the opening chapters very helpful and useful.
Wonderful Projects, OK Instructions.......2001-10-31
I bought this book for the patterns... especially a wonderful elephant necklace... and they are great. Unfortionately, I also bought this book to learn from and ended up with alot of trial and error time before I understood the directions. She doesn't explain how to hold the work in order to maintain tension only mentions that it is important. The pictures of techniques are misleading but if you ignore them and read the instructions only it makes alot more sense. Good point though... the projects are not as hard as they look and come out wonderfully. All in all this book was well work the money.
A taste, but not a feast.......2000-12-19
Tired of amulet bags? This book does not contain a single one. Instead there are needle-cases,a necklace depicting elephants, and teeny-tiny cups and loaves of bread. Maybe a bit precious, but certainly not run-off-the-mill. But a word to all authors and editors of beadwork: Photographs (and, similarly, scans) of size 11 beads printed at 100% are too small for a beader to understand what's going on. And when the beads and thread are both dark, it's futile to try to understand the thread path. If you want a book for inspiration, this one is nice. If you want a book for instruction, go to one of the lovely books that has clear diagrams, Carol Wilcox Wells's books, for example.
Recommended, but Not for Everyone.......2000-05-29
This book offers one of the widest ranges of projects in any beading book I've seen, considering that it deals exclusively with seed beads. The first part contains an interesting description of how seed beads are made, and then the obligatory descriptions of findings, thread, etc., that seem to be part of every beading book.
Next come descriptions of various stitches and techniques. I didn't find these particularly helpful because I am one of those people who need extensive diagrams to figure out new beading stitches (but if you work well from just text then you will be all right here). I would say that if you are just starting out and don't already know peyote and brick stitch and how to weave on a loom, you should probably learn these elsewhere (there are a lot of places on the web that give great tutorials).
For the most part, the photography in the book is excellent. (I say "for the most part" because there are some photographs in with the stitch tutorials but you can't really see what's going on in them.) The pictures of beadwork are pretty good, albeit rather small.
A few final cautions and then on to the praise. =) First, the pattern graphs may be a little hard to read (and because the book is so nice looking, you feel like you shouldn't write in it). Second, the materials needed for many of the projects are pretty specific and you can't always substitute something you already have on hand (in other words, you may need to go shopping for large numbers of Delicas). Third, surprisingly few of the projects in the book are jewelry, so if you're only looking to make necklaces or earrings (as opposed to wall-hangings, scissors cases, and miniature bead sculptures), you should probably look elsewhere. Finally, while there is an inspirational beadwork gallery in the back, many of the pieces are done in the tambour stitch, which is not covered in the book.
With these things in mind, the book is actually quite good. If you already have a handle on basic seed beading techniques, and if you are interested in things you can make OTHER than jewelry, this book is definitely for you. Before picking up "The Art of Seed Beading," I had never thought of making a clock face or a 3-dimensional picnic scene out of beads. And if you already know how to knit or crochet, the projects that add beads to these two techniques are fairly easy to understand.

Book Description
A study of the cultural world of Giambattista Vico, one of the most creative social theorists of the eighteenth century. Based on extensive manuscript as well as printed materials, and relying on the methods of book and publishing history, this volume describes Vico's intellectual community. Special attention is paid to the interaction between scholars and Naples' vibrant operatic and artistic community. The first part of the book investigates a controversy concerning an inquisitorial investigation, Neapolitan travel literature, the papers of a scientific academy, and the patronage system for book publication. The second part describes the cultural context of Vico's writings and especially the three editions of The New Science. This work explains the accomplishments that made Naples one of the great cultural centers of the early Enlightenment.
Customer Reviews:
brilliant and readable.......1999-06-19
Stone's book is full of completely relevant detail, documenting with his knowledge of personality and history, those revolutionary and disturbing times in Naples. Exploring book reading habits, printing, attitudes on the ground toward the Inquisition, local thinkers and their place in the larger intellectual world of the times, it makes captivating reading. He is doing what Vico might have directed him to do: get under the skins of the people of the time. His presentation of Vico as a seminal political thinker also opened my eyes to other aspects of the philosopher - my focus has been too "one-sided" - since I am focussing on a Jungian analysis of Vico (Mr Stone may cringe when he hears someone is attempting that). In any case, Mr Stone has helped me in my quest to discover what "type" Vico was. He makes tantalising hints at possible Masonic research Vico was involved with - I am based in London and is has proven hard to read it here; but I did locate it in the New York Public Library - I have not been able to complete reading as yet, but it was a thrilling experience to read the 80% I did manage sitting in that hot room in New York.

A gorgeous book, by a great artist.......1999-01-23
This book reproduces the original travel book created by David Roberts in the early 1800s. Though not as large as the original book, the reproductions are quite large and beautifully done. David Robert's lithographs are magical.
A true vision of the holy land........1998-10-23
Roberts portrayal of the holy land as it appeared thousands of years ago brings to life what once could only be described by the words of the bible. A visit to the mid-east would not be complete without first studying Robert's book. One's perspective as they visit the holy land would then blend today's rituals with that of the past.

Book Description
I was raised in full consciousness of being Jewish. I was sent to a Yiddish shule and I can read and speak Yiddish. But I am not a Yiddish speaking Jew: Yiddish is not part of my essence. I am not a believer. I do not celebrate the holidays, nor do I atone for my sins on Yom Kippur. And I have transmitted virtually nothing of Yiddishkeit to my children. This failure of mine became the subject of a quarrel with my father who told me I had in effect thrown away the gift of Yiddish he had given me. My children were no longer Jews...."
What it means to be a Jew lies at the very heart of A Matter of Identity, a memoir and an examination of the nature of Jewish identity in an increasingly secular world (and whether a secular Jewish culture really has a future in America); of the pain of a heritage lost-or in danger of disappearing-not only in the religious sense, but in the sense of the history, the culture, the humor much of which defines Jewishness and some of which defines Yiddishkeit. But what is "Jewishness" anyway? And what are the links that bind Karl Marx to Saul Bellow or Spinoza to Philip Roth; The Pale to Brooklyn. These ideas-and many others-lie at the very heart of A Matter of Identity, and Eugene Goodheart's wrestling match with the questions of faith and cultural identity is sure to gather in spectators-believers and doubters alike.

Confessions of a Secular Jew - a Memoir
by Eugene Goodheart
The Overlook Press
The author shows how being an academic can be every bit as stressful as playing professional sports.
Professor Goodheart, a noted scholar now teaching at Brandeis University, makes a valiant effort to portray his life and experiences in an honest readable manner.
What occurs, however, is one long kvetch covering 262 pages. In a tone very similar to John Edgar Wideman's Hoop Roots, reviewed in January, Professor Goodheart examines almost all his relationships and tracks his efforts to find meaning in his heritage and upbringing. In Hoop Roots, basketball was used as a metaphor for African-American life; in Goodheart's Confessions it is climbing the academic ladder that is the tableau against which a life is measured.
Professor Goodheart grew up in the New York, Jewish, Post World War II world where you were politically correct by supporting Henry Wallace's Progressives in 1948, flirting with Communism, then, with the backdrop of HUAC, Nixon and Joe McCarthy, becoming anti-communist but still of the left, being pro- and pro-active for civil rights, then being against the Vietnam War and finally, in the Reagan days, becoming a neo-conservative or libertarian. The professor was on campus for most of this era dealing with student unrest, collegial jealousy-and the long decline and death of his mother.
Having grown up with smart Jewish kids just like Professor Goodheart, I can understand and have empathy for the pressures of the intellectual games that informed his career. Surely writing the well nuanced essay for the Partisan Review is as difficult to learn as setting a pick in basketball. The little games of intellectual one-upmanship and "gotcha" are just as bloody to the psyche as a hard intentional foul. Many of us have rejected the strict orthodoxy of our parents, but now, in the last part of our lives, we are examining our traditions and honoring them as Professors Goodheart and Wideman do.
I admit this book can be a little whiney, self abusing and involved in arcane disputes, but it can be fascinating reading, especially to learn about a group that challenged and changed intellectual America in the past 60 years. Maybe if you're easily bored, you can wait for the Reader's Digest Condensed version.

A compelling and deeply personal memoir.......2001-07-09
This memoir was hard to put down. Goodheart courageously examines and reveals his past, his relationships to family, colleagues and friends with an honest study of a secular Jew growing up in America in the second half of the 20th Century. Left wing politics, furious clashes with the intellectual establishment, a high adventure journey through the mind, its all here packed into 262 pages of vivid prose.
