You gotta love the sci-fi invention of Crematoria..........2007-05-29
I suspect a reader's evaluation of The Chronicles of Riddick, the book, are influenced by one's "Riddick" experiences. Mine are, in chronological order, The Chronicles of Riddick (the movie), Pitch Black (the book), and The Chronicles of Riddick (the book). Next will be Pitch Black (the movie).
The Chronicles of Riddick (the book) answered some of my questions. Who the heck WAS Kyra, anyway. Ahhh... the kid in Pitch Black. What was the relationship between Imam and Riddick? Again, that's in Pitch Black. Why are the mercs all after Riddick? You guessed it... Pitch Black!
The Chronicles of Riddick (the book) was based on the screenplay, and I was anticipating a repeat of the movie, nothing more, yet I was pleased with the additional detail. The book ends wit a "Historians' Note on Pre-Necroism." Perhaps the neo-Riddick reign will be worthy of another book and movie.
I was hoping for some additional information on the species called Elementals. Remember this dialogue?
Dame Vaako: " You don't pray to our God. That is hardly a surprise. You pray to no God, I hear. That is not especially a surprise, either. My curiosity picking at me again, I suppose. What do you do instead? With what do you fill that void in human speculation?'
Aereon: "Elementals -- we calculate."
Dame Vaako: "... It is well-known that Elementals have their own agenda, their own design. Elementals don't believe in God because they hope to BE God" (p. 215-216).
Live long, and calculate!
REview of the book........2006-06-26
The book explains a few points in the philosophy of the necromongers that are unclear in the movie. Otherwise it is an enjoyable sci-fi read.
Seen the film?.......2005-10-26
Different to the standard Alan Dean Foster approach. I can now understand what the film was about.
Acceptable if Brief Read.......2004-09-11
Writers often take on media spin-off projects on contract in order to provide notoreity and income while working on other projects. As a result, an otherwise unspectacular adaptation may receive the boon of a good writer's talent while at the same time suffering from a tone that bespeaks the sense of urgency with which the volume is written.
Foster's adaptation of Twohy's second Riddick film is a good read. It follows the general line of the screenplay while adding expository details and delving into aspects of narration and insight not easily captured on the screen. As a fan of the film series I enjoyed the novelization enough to keep it (while I have relegated Lauria's less-than-stellar adaptation of _Pitch Black_ to the local used book store), and especially appreciated Foster's taking the time to develop the history and tenets of the Necromonger faith.
The author waxes a trifle corny at times, attributing Riddick's pantherish reflexes and indomitable resolve to a trick of Furyan genetics that leans heavily toward the supernatural. In Foster's defense, however, the film was unable, due to time constraints, to address the issue completely, and as such the topic falls well within the novelist's scope of influence. I did, however, take note of numerous typos and mistakes of grammar. Every published book, no matter how well edited, is possessed of one or two, but the speed with which media tie-ins are sent to press tends to contribute to their being infested with far more than the usual ration of bloopers.
All in all, however, Foster's _Chronicles of Riddick_ is worth reading if one is already a fan of the series. It is doubtful that the book will make a convert of those not already enamored of the character and his world, but for pre-existing afficionados the background information on Necroism and the added internal narration of the characters ought to be enough to justify the purchase of the book.
My Thoughts.......2004-07-16
Saw the movie really didn't get it. Now that I read the book I understand it. Ties up some of the loose ends too.
Overall-Really good read thanks to Allen Dean Foster

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04
Green Lantern is boring by himself.
One of the niftiest things about the whole Green Lantern saga is the interstellar marshal aspect of it, and lots of entertaining space adventures.
That had been demolished in the past, and here DC has decided to have another crack at it. Guy Gardner with authority, who'd thunk it?
unexpectedly good.......2007-07-07
The art is very good. Cinematic in some segments. Story is OK. Increased my desire to read more green lantern.
The Corps Recharged.......2006-07-17
With Hal Jordan back from the dead and John Stewart in the JLA, what's a Green Lantern to do? Re-establish the Green Lantern Corps that's what! Collecting the five issue mini-series written by Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons and featuring art by Patrick Gleason, Green Lantern Corps: Recharge focuses on GL's Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, and Kilowog as they all play a part in the training of rookie Green Lanterns on Oa. Unbeknownst to them however is a new threat to the universe which is slowly crawling towards Oa, and the combined powers of all the Lanterns in the universe may not be enough to stop it. While Recharge isn't a revolutionary yarn of the DC universe, it is a fast and fun action tale nicely weaved by fan favorite writer Johns and Watchmen artist Gibbons, whose Infinite Crisis tie in, the Rann/Thanagar War, is better left to be forgotten, even if this has some ties to it. Gleason's art is reminiscent of Chris Bachalo's work on various X-Men titles, which means that at times it can be too cartoony for it's own good. Perhaps Gibbons would have been better off providing the pencils here. Despite all that, GL: Recharge is still a more than solid Green Lantern story that doesn't deter from the legacy of the emerald heroes, and this is worth picking up for GL fans.

For women seeking complexion perfection, Dr. Nicholas Perricone is the name to know; actress Courteney Cox counts herself among his many devotees. In The Perricone Promise, he claims that his 28-day program will help stop and even reverse the aging process, making anyone who follows his advice "look and feel ten years younger." Perricone says the brain and the skin both start out as the same embryonic tissue, so it follows that any efforts aimed at improving one's complexion will also improve one's memory and overall sense of well-being.
To this end, he recommends a three-pronged approach: a very specific 28-day diet; supplements taken morning, noon, and night; and his own line of "topical" cosmetics, all aimed at boosting the body's levels of "peptides and neuropeptides." These substances, according to Perricone, are not only the building blocks of the skin's collagen, but an integral part of the functioning of the immune system, and may prevent inflammation in the body that's associated with such illnesses as arthritis and heart disease.
Perricone's diet sensibly includes a "rainbow" of fruits and vegetables and the liberal use of herbs and spices, and shuns any foods browned or cooked at high temperatures. But unfortunately, some of the food combinations sound less than appetizing (typical snack: "1-2 ounces sliced turkey or chicken breast, 3 olives, 3 strawberries, 8 ounces water"). His eponymous supplements and cosmetics are also pretty pricey, but as far as Perricone's fans are concerned, when it comes to putting the brakes on the aging process, you get what you pay for. --Erica Jorgensen

Great Diet.......2007-08-01
I tried Perricone's diet and it makes me feel good and active. He has done his research and is aware of the new products available. I did not try the supplements. I felt they are over priced.
Ok I guess.......2007-07-02
It has a lot of great detailed data and things like that...BUT in the end it is the same ole addage that we all know: Eat right, Sleep enough, Exercise, and be positive. LESS Alcohol, stress, bad carbs...
given as a gift.......2007-06-27

The Smart-Aging Bible.......2007-06-10
Dr. Nicholas Perricone is perhaps the leading expert on "smart-aging" diet and nutritional supplements.
His advice on the best foods / beverages and the most scientifically-advanced nutritional supplements is FAR ahead of any other "expert" out there.
Being in the nutritional supplement industry, I can vouch that what he says about specific supplements is scientifically accurate.
I especially like what he says about the nutrients Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Benfotiamine (fat-soluble vitamin B1) and Carnosine as being the most powerful "age-fighting" supplements avialable.
For those of you who can afford the supplements...and some of the foods he recommends, I can virtually guarantee you that you will see & feel results very fast.
For those of you that complain about how much the foods / supplements / cosmaceuticals cost..."don't shoot the messenger" (Dr. Perricone)...he doesn't set the prices on most of these products - especially the foods and supplements.
The alternative is to keep eating the typical "Standard American Diet" (ironically called SAD), so you can continue to look and feel like hell, and set yourself up for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, macular degeneration and all the "wonderful" things associated with getting older.
He is sharing the science of "smart-aging" with you, so you can make highly informed / educated decisions about what foods / supplements / skincare products to use to feel & look your absolute best.
Do your doctors share this information with you?
His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect).......2006-08-10
It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.
His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.
And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.

Customer Reviews:
Reminds me of Grandma's Cooking.......2007-05-14
I've tried a few of the recipes in this book. I have to say each of them remind me of my Grandmother's cooking. Since she's no longer around, I can again enjoy some of my childhood favorites.
Nothing New.......2007-03-08
There is really nothing new to be gotten from this book or any improvement to any old recipes. Some of the instructions are confusing and some pictures such as the chess pie refer you to page that has a different recipe than what is pictured. Nothing to be learned here with this book. Very disappointing.
Nice addition to my collection...........2006-11-12
If you're looking for the famous biscuit recipe, you won't find it. But you don't have to buy the book to figure that one out. Just peruse the index/t.o.c prior to purchase to see the recipes offered in round two of the Loveless Cafe.
I have the first Loveless Cafe cookbook, from when it was featured on Discovery Daytime 5 or 6 years ago. The lasagna recipe is excellent. From the second cookbook, I've tried the mashed potatoes & macaroni & cheese recipes.... also excellent. However for a family of 4 (such as ours), you're best suited to cut both recipes in half unless you're planning to feed an army. I served half of each recipe for dinner, and had to place the other halves in the freezer for later meals.
PS: In reading the other posts, I seriously doubt there's Gin in the biscuit recipe. Buttermilk is usually the secret ingredient which lends biscuits that 'kick in the background'. The previous best-guess-recipe is missing lard. My best guess for the secret biscuit recipe includes flour, baking powder, salt, crisco from the can, buttermilk, & melted butter.
Deviled Egg Soup?.......2006-09-26
I recently purchased this cookbook and tried the recipe for Deviled Eggs on page 73. How do you stuff an egg with a soupy, runny mess? Obviously this recipe is flawed. I spooned up the mess to taste-test it (or should I say drink it?). It was far too tart and mustardy. Aren't the recipes tested before they're printed? It was the first recipe I tried from this cookbook, but it was such a disaster that all other recipes are suspect for me now. It does contain entertaining pictures and reading material. I just hope that the other recipes aren't as flawed as this one. Also disappointed that the biscuit recipe isn't included.
Authentic Southern Cooking.......2005-10-24
I looked at each page and checked the ingredients to see if they were the same as what my grandmother and aunts use in their dishes. I must say, "Without a doubt there are authentic southern dishes in this book!"
Product Description
Let's face it; whenever we interact with our horses we're training them. Good, bad or indifferent, they are learning something. Using the Ten Golden Rules will guide your actions and reactions, regardless of a horse's temperament, experience and the exact circumstances. They apply to all styles of riding pleasure, hunter, jumper, dressage, and Western-and to all levels of training, from the most basic to the most advanced. And, they apply to handling horses from the ground as well as from the saddle. The result? A happier more cooperative relationship between you and your horse, based on trust and understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Horse interactions made simple!.......2007-08-01
This book takes the complicated, step-by-step directions found in all the other horse training books and provides ten common-sense rules that can be applied to every horse training situation. It's an excellent addition to your horse training/psychology library and one that is a thoroughly enjoyable read as well!
bloody good book.......2006-08-01
I loved this book. Have been reading lots of the natural horsemanship stuff, and so much of it is esoteric, badly written or simply makes you feel an incompetent idiot. Bruce Nock doesn't do this! It's simple and practical and starts working straight away. No secrets. Just do it. Thanks, Bruce
For the Dedicated Trainer not Newbie.......2005-09-21
Training with author is mandatoring in my barefoot trimming certification course, so I thought I would get an early jump on the reading. I am a confirmed clicker trainer, with clicker as an overlay, mostly on John Lyons training.
Definitely Nice to Have for the person very interested in training, animal behavior and the science behind it all. Perhaps not the first or second book to buy for a Newbie trainer who really wants to get started today!
Excellent!.......2005-01-17
I wish this book had been available five years ago when I first became involved with horses. Dr. Nock's "Ten Golden Rules" is the first book anyone interested in training a horse - or even owning one - should read. Except for clearly outlining a procedure for tactfully establishing your superior rank within your 'herd', this is not a 'How To' recipe book. Instead, Dr. Nock explains basic learning theory as it applies specifically to the horse. With the information this book provides you can better understand, evaluate, and implement any of the more detailed training programs promoted by today's top trainers, solve problems those programs don't address, or even develop your own training program. Learning the 'Ten Golden Rules' will benefit both you and your horse.

Book Description
By starting small, Decorative Mini-Murals You Can Paint makes it easy for anyone to experience the joy of mural painting.
Kerry Trout guides readers through 12 step-by-step projects, including country vistas, gardens, flowers, a grandfather clock, trompe l'oeil objects and more! Readers can choose the project and surface size that matches their ability and comfort level, making this book perfect for beginners and advanced artists alike.
Customer Reviews:
They're Gorgeous !.......2004-12-18
Here are the projects shown in the book:
*a bunny triptych
*trompe l'oeil window shade
*schoolhouse notebook
*goldfinch frame
*covered bridge box
*mountain view lodge
*Tuscany hatbox
*trompe l'oeil cat
*Shaker clock
*trompe l'oeil wall shelf
The designs demonstrated in the book could be applied to many different situations, not just the projects listed. The art is exquisite and she really does tell you how to do the different brushstrokes for everything from blades of grass to chimney smoke. She tells exactly what color to use for each, and what kind of brush.
As a beginner, I just don't have the confidence to tackle these. I think I'll try stenciling first and maybe build up my comfort level. The artist has a website where you can see her portfolio and get an idea of the kind of painting this book covers.
Unique subject matter.......2003-06-24
I have many books on murals, decorative painting, and trompe l'oeil. This book provides info not seen in others. It is a good companion to the Donna Dewberry One-Stroke method of decorative painting. It is perhaps a little too advanced for the brand new beginner.

Book Description
The study of the Elenchos (c. 225 CE) involves the whole range of ancient interpretative traditions concerned with Greek Philosophy, from Aristotle to the Late Neoplatonists. The present inquiry places Hippolytus' important reports about the Greek philosophers in the context of these traditions and so is able to illuminate not only what he has to offer but also to increase our knowledge of the traditions he depends on. For him the Pythagoreanizing current in Pre-Neoplatonism is of paramount importance. Accordingly, he constructs a succession (diadoche) starting with Pythagoras and including Empedocles, Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics, and argues that the diadoche of the Gnostic heresiarchs is parasitical on its Pythagorean predecessor. A new assessment of the sources used -- the first serious attempt since that of Diels in 1879 -- hinges on an analysis of Hippolytus' method of presentation, which is a blend of cento and exegesis geared to his anti-Gnostic purpose.
Customer Reviews:
Not a perfect book, but enjoyable and well worth having........2001-06-02
For those who are interested in Audubon prints, this book is a good introduction, but if you are serious about collecting or very interested in Audubon, it could raise more questions for you than it answers. Don't expect a comprehensive or 100-percent accurate treatment of Audubon or Audubon prints from this rather short book.
Unfortunately, some of the areas of weakness are important to collectors. For instance, the approach to authentication is simplistic and by no means comprehensive. The book doesn't really address how to distinguish hand coloring from printed color, or the fact that hand-colored reproductions of Havells exist. The authors barely mention plate mark, which is an extremely valuable tool for authenticating Havells. In spite of these shortcomings, the book provides a nice overview of all the major editions of Audubon's prints with a good mix of biography, history and nitty-gritty details.
Beware, however, that brevity comes at a price -- this book has some gaps. Bannon and Clark do not mention the second issue of the Imperial Folio edition of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, or the existence of a restrike of the Imperial Folio plate, The White Wolf. (You can find more information on both topics in the recently published book, John James Audubon in the West, edited by Sarah Boehme).
Information in Bannon and Clark is not always accurate -- e.g., the later edition octavo dates. (Try Ron Tyler's book, Audubon's Great National Work, for a more detailed account of the octavo Birds). There are also more significant errors. For instance, the number of prints from Nagel and Weingaertner in any given octavo quads set varies; the set that Bannon and Clark looked at just happened to have seventeen plates by Nagel and Weingaertner, but they give that as the number for all sets.
The price information in this book is out of date even though the authors include some appendices that attempt to give an idea of price inflation. Still, the lists do provide an indication of relative prices. As long as you realize that these lists represent a single dealer's opinion and experience, and that other dealers do not necessarily rank the plates in the exact way that Clark ranks them, you should find this information very helpful.
In the end, I have to say that I like this book, and often find myself turning to it for background or price information. Right now, it is the best book -- really, the only book -- available that is specifically geared towards Audubon collectors. Although that will change over time as more books come out, I doubt that Bannon and Clark will become superfluous...it is a good addition to any Audubon library.
A Must for the Serious Audubon Collector.......2000-08-30
This handbook fills a void in the vast library of Audubon publications. It focuses on the various publications of Audubon and his family, such as the double elephant folio, the imperials, the miniatures, and the Bien edition. Accurate dates of publication are given along with very helpful clues to distinguishing between various editions. Our 1998 copy contained welcome revisions to the pricing of the double elephant, Bien, and imperial prints. I have found that in the few years since publication, the prices of the larger images have about doubled, and smaller images are about 15 to 20 percent higher in price than what is stated. In fact, whereas a complete folio sold for about $4,000,000.00 as correctly stated in Addendum C, page 128, (back in 1992), a complete folio recently sold at Christies for about $9,000,000.00. One should use this handbook as a handbook. We make regular notes in the margins in the price pages. For example, plate 376 (Trumpeter Swan) was valued at $30,000 in 1997, when I assume the information in the book was assembled. A plate 376 sold in 1999 for $93,250. We have entered this corrected information in our copy.
We highly recommend this handbook for any who wish to collect the work of a master artist/naturalist. The information will assist you in making intelligent purchases from sites such as eBay.
OUT OF DATE!!!.......2000-02-06
The 4th edition of this "Collectors Handbook" is a reprint of earlier editions rather than a much needed rewrite.
The background information provided in this book IS very interesting and helpful. HOWEVER, the first question asked on the back of this book is "What is the value of an Audubon Print?" This book answers that question with print by print price information (almost 1/3 of the book) that is over 20 years old. NO price information is even given for the Octavo prints.
As a guide for collectors looking for current value information for Audubon prints this book is worthless.
A succinct little book.......1998-08-24
This book is extremely helpful in understanding the production of all of Audubon's works.`

Book Description
John Jea (b. 1773) and George White (b. 1764-c.1830) were two of the earliest African American autobiographers, each writing nearly a half-century before Frederick Douglass. Jea and White represent an earlier generation of African Americans who were born into slavery but granted their freedom shortly after American independence. Both chose to fight against slavery from the pulpit, as itinerant Methodist ministers in the North; Methodism's staunch anti-slavery stance, acceptance of African American congregants, and use of itinerant preachers enhanced black religious practices and services in the late 18th century and throughout the 19th century. Graham Hodges' substantial introduction to the book places these two narratives into historical context, and highlights several key themes, including slavery in the North, the struggle for black freedom after the Revolution, and the rise of African American Christianity.
