Book Description

Beginning with a search for the ten lost tribes and ending in an attic, where lies an important bible which has been missing for seventy-nine years, The Genizah at the House of Shepher is Tamar Yellin's critically acclaimed debut novel.

Returning to her grandparents' home in Jerusalem after an absence of many years, Shulamit, an English biblical scholar, stumbles into the mystery of the so-called Shepher Codex, an ancient and valuable manuscript of the Bible which has been discovered in the "genizah" or attic. In uncovering the truth about the Codex she reveals the loves, hates and histories of the Shepher family itself, and at the same time struggles to answer pressing questions: what is the significance of the Codex and where does it come from? Who is the stranger, Gideon, who is desperate to enlist her help? Above all, whom does the Codex belong to and what part must Shula play in its destiny?

This was not a good book. I found it difficut to stay focused. It did not hold my interest.

5 out of 5 stars One to get lost in.......2007-05-29

I loved this book. I read it nearly a year ago but decided to write a review because I can still, even now, see the pictures in my head that were evoked by the beautiful writing.

I was also reminded of it when I saw that it won the Rohr prize. The judges included a professor, a novelist a Harvard fellow and an editorial director so I guess they know what's what.

Reminded me a little of Isabelle Allende's style but it is stands out on its own and is well worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars A Story of Rare Distinction.......2007-02-08

I travelled through time and found a long lost treasure and a long lost love along with the main character, Shulamit. Famiy, belonging, and the struggle for identity are universal themes that make this a book for all countries. I don't want to spoil a thing, you must pick up this book and travel to a different time. I promise this will enchant the discriminating reader.

Excellent book- a real page turner that succesfully allows the reader to ride the waves between the past and present of this fascinating family.

5 out of 5 stars A deeply enthralling narrative of epic spiritual proportions.......2005-08-08

The Genizah At The House Of Shepherd is a sweeping novel that follows the return of an English biblical scholar to her grandparents' home in Jerusalem. Immersed in a simmering family feud concerning the so-called "Shepher Codex", she discovers the history of her family, from the great-grandfather who traveled to Babylon in search of the ten lost tribes, to her grandfather's Zionist ideals that caused conflict with his religion, to the tragic love affair of her parents and her own sad past. As much a parable of the transformations in Jerusalem over a hundred and thirty years as it is the story of one woman's struggle for identity and search for answers, The Genizah At The House Of Shepherd is a deeply enthralling narrative of epic spiritual proportions.

Imagine that there was a genius who has been systematically ignored, overlooked, and even lied about for a century. Imagine further that this man is responsible for the technological underpinnings of the modern world. Imagine that he created such things as x-ray photography, robotics, microwave transmission, and still holds the original patent that all computer companies must rely on-only he patented the original in the 1890's. Imagine that he actually invented radio but has never been credited for it.

Imagine at the same time that this fellow intimately knew the most powerful and influential people of his age: J.P. Morgan, the Vanderbilts, the Astors, Sarah Bernhardt, George Westinghouse, Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, Stanford White, and a host of others in the prestigious New York 400. Imagine that his inventions alone drastically changed the life of that city, and then the nation, and then the world.

Imagine, too, that his story is actually a very personal one despite the power of his inventions. It is the story of an immigrant who stepped on our shores with just four cents in his pocket. It is the story of his rise in the culture and life of the nation when it was still young. It is the story of his tangled relationship with a woman of spirit who became the fulcrum of all he attempted to achieve.

Finally, imagine that he may have created the most powerful invention of all time at Wardenclyffe, Long Island-a thing that scientists still try to comprehend but to no avail. Understand, lastly, that much of what he created and how he created it was a hundred years before its time and is still largely a mystery to the best scientists and thinkers in the world today.

Imagine all of that and you have Wizard of the Phantom Night, the story of Nikola Tesla, the man who did all this and more-the unsung hero of an age that has forgotten its heroes.

Book Description

From the bestselling author and renowned mindfulness teacher, scientist, and educator. . .a guide to living a meaningful life. This follow-up to the widely praised national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are is yet another revolutionary offering from Jon Kabat-Zinn, showing readers how the power of mindfulness can bring radical change to their lives. In the national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are, Jon Kabat-Zinn struck a chord in contemporary society that continues to reverberate to this day. It has been embraced by politicians, business leaders, and celebrities and endures as a classic with readers. In his groundbreaking new book, Dr. Kabat-Zinn teaches us how to harness the power of mindfulness to effect profound change in our personal lives and in the world. As stress continues to exact a toll on everyday life, people are increasingly turning to ancient, meditative methods, which have been tested by science, to relieve the ill effects and become more focused, healthy, and proactive. Kabat-Zinn has been for decades at the forefront of this mind/body movement and the revolution in medicine and health care it has spawned, demystifying it and bringing it into the mainstream. In Coming to Our Senses, he shares how every human has the capacity to mobilize deep, innate resources for continual learning, growing, healing, and transformation through mindfulness.Woven into eight parts, Coming to Our Senses uses anecdotes and stories from Kabat-Zinn's own life experiences and work in his clinic to illustrate healing possibilities. At its core, the book offers remarkable insight into how to use the five senses -- touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell, plus awareness itself -- as a path to a healthier, saner, and more meaningful life. This is the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness, health, and our physical and spiritual well-being.

4 out of 5 stars Good....but a little redundant.......2007-07-05

I love Jon Kabat-Zinn's work.....and this book is certainly worth getting and reading. However, it is quite long and some of the sections didn't seem to add anything useful. On the other hand, some of the sections were amazing and worth reading more than once. If you like Jon Kabat-Zinn's other writings (e.g., wherever you go there you are, full catastrophe living) you will probably be happy with this book as well.

1 out of 5 stars A few good observations, but mostly new age rubbish .......2007-01-30

After seeing Jon Kabat-Zinn on McLaughlin's One-on-One I was intrigued and decided to buy this book. I was sorely disappointed. He makes some good observations (e.g. about ADD and the 24/7 lifestyle), but offers solutions based only on far-eastern philosophies (yoga, meditation, etc). Not what I expected. I would not recommend this book to devout Christians or Muslims. Better stick with the Bible or the Koran, or the writings of accomplished Biblical or Koranic scholars.

1 out of 5 stars Kabat-Zinn does not have the answers to the world's problems........2007-01-05

Kabat-Zinn, to his misfortune, is like many people who gain a bit of fame for doing one thing well: they come to believe that that they can do many things well and, worse yet, that they have the solutions to the world's problems. Almost always, that solution is dependent upon people behaving or doing what they do.

This book is not about the meditative strategies that made Kabat-Zinn justifiably famous in some circles. Rather, "Coming To Our Senses" is a confused, disjointed, rambling, disconnected and amazingly naive and ignorant treatise on how the world will be saved if only everyone could be induced to meditate.

Tell that to those pleasant folks who are beheading people because they don't share their ideas. Or to the punks on the street who take what they want with whatever violence they deem appropriate. Tell that to the smarmy politicians and others who feast on the taxpayer's money.

Kabat-Zinn should have stuck to helping people use mindfulness (his term of art for meditation) to help them overcome stress.

Kabat-Zinn displays amazing levels of naivete, ignorance and gullibility in these pages when he leaves his area of expertise. He leaves no doubt that he is a child of the 1960s. This is apparent in his endless litany of common left-wing political nostrums.

Kabat-Zinn's writing style in this work is absolutely awful. I counted 97 words in one sentence and it was not an exception. In many ways it seems that Kabat-Zinn is imitating --- poorly --- Joyce and Proust. One chapter is devoted to a description of the descent of the author's father into Alzheimer's. It is, in its own way, moving, but has nothing to do with meditation.

Kabat-Zinn seems to think that like Barbara Streisand and Sean Penn, that he has something to say not merely on the state of the world but about how humankind can save itself. This is the kind of senseless monologue that you would expect to see as a self-published work from a vanity press.

I simply cannot overstress how awful "Coming To Our Senses" is. If you want to learn about meditation, Kabat-Zinn's earlier works are far, far better. If you want New Age nonsense, then you might find this wretched work satisfying.

Jerry

5 out of 5 stars The Tree of Mindfulness.......2007-01-04

In this book, Kabat-Zinn takes the time and space to discuss not just a leaf or a branch, but the roots, trunk, and branches of mindfulness meditation. While many recent works on meditation or Buddhism are really extended essays exploring a single concept or practice, this work stands out as a comprehensive engagement with and discussion, evaluation and integration of mindfulness meditation practice. The author speaks from the perspective of one well acquainted with the whole tree, and integrates the practices and insights of mindfulness meditation into the entire scope of life, not merely the meditation cushion or the yoga mat.

I restrained myself and read only a chapter or two per day, allowing my mind the time and space to make connections between the ideas Kabat-Zinn presents and the varied elements of my experience. Doing so enriched my own meditation practice significantly and strengthened my resolve and ability to articulate meditation concepts to others.

3 out of 5 stars Not a very good audio book.......2007-01-03

This refers to the AUDIO book, not the book itself:

What the author is teaching here, is an important subject, and if you find yourself drawn to mindfulness or mindful meditation, I would suggest reading some books by Thich Nhat Hanh ("The Miracle of Mindfulness" and others) or Joseph Golstein or Sharon Salzberg ("Insight Meditation" and others).

Nothing against Jon Kabat-Zinn, but to my mind, he is not a very good communicator, and this audio-book spoken by him makes this all too obvious. He writes in a very complex way, using many adjectives and phrases, and long sentences (kine of like this one) that seem to me to be the writings of someone trying to impress someone.

On the other hand, Thich Nhat Hanh, whose first language is Vietnamese, writes in a much more clear and simple way, which allows one to appreciate the subject matter as opposed to finding it difficult to understand. If anything, Thich Nhat Hanh's writing style is overly simplified, as if he were talking to people who have trouble understanding what they read. So maybe you might like something in-between the two, such as Jack Kornfield's books or Joseph Golstein's.

Don't get me wrong, this book will teach you about mindfulness, and for that I applaud it. And maybe his style appeals to many people - perhaps it appeals to the intellectual, college professor or scientific types (I'm just guessing). But it does not appeal to me, at all. To me, his writing style is like a sophomore writing student trying to impress his professor that he knows how to use a lot of flowery, descriptive language. But I prefer the direct and simple approach for a non-fiction book like this. Maybe the author should try fiction...

All in all, this is not a bad audio/ book. That's why I gave it 3 stars. It does have a lot of information that is useful and interesting, and if it wasn't for the style in which it is written (spoken), I think I would have liked it much better.

All I'm really saying is, check it out before ordering it here. You may find other books that are written better and other audio books that sound better. (I wonder why this book does not have the "Look Inside" feature that most others do.)

I do think that this book would be more enjoyable to read, as opposed to listening to. Something about his sentence structure does not flow in an audio book.

—Regina Schrambling, Los Angeles Times

"Even those who never cook may find themselves often dipping into this intriguing read."

5 out of 5 stars Fresh insights on herbs and spices. Buy It!.......2005-11-18

`The Contemporary Encyclopedia of herbs & spices' by Seattle spice merchant Tony Hill is a great contrast to the previous spice reference I reviewed, Jill Norman's `herbs & spices, the cook's reference' which I stated at the time may be the only book the amateur cook needs as a reference on herbs and spices. Herr Hill's work does not change my original opinion of Norman's book, but that is not because Hill's book is of lower quality than Norman's reference. It is because Norman's work is much more skillfully arranged to serve the average cook.

One of the great virtues of Ms. Norman's book is its arrangement by the general flavor of the spice or herb plant species and variation. Mr. Hill, as his title suggests, is a totally alphabetical arrangement by the most familiar common name for the herb or spice used from the plant. Therefore, Hill's book gives no easy resource for finding an herb that tastes something like borage. Mr. Hill's very personally phenomenological essay on the borage plant and its edible portions suggest it tastes something like mint and goes well with dill.

The single area where Mr. Hill outdoes Ms. Norman is in discoursing on the various types of bay, the one subject on which I gigged Ms. Norman in my review of her book. While Ms. Norman gives us only the classic Mediterranean (Turkish) bay, Mr. Hill cites four different varieties of plant yielding leaves called `bay leaves'. He echos most chef's preference for the Turkish variety, but gives us information whereby the California leaf can be put into service with the proper care to avoid having your recipe develop an aroma of Vicks Vaporub (metaphor stolen from Alton Brown). In the end, Ms. Norman still comes out ahead in the sense that all we really need is the Turkish bay, as I have never seen a recipe specify the California, Indian, or Indonesian varieties of bay. Ms. Norman pulls far ahead when we get to basil, for which she cites fourteen (14) different varieties, many of which are indeed specified in various Mediterranean, Indian, and East Asian recipes.

Ms. Norman is also a far better reference for spice sources (although for some odd reason, she overlooks Pensey's Spices) since Mr. Hill is himself a spice merchant. You would hardly expect a book written by Mr. Starbuck to tell you where to find Maxwell House coffee (I do find it odd, though, that Mr. Hill gives us no information on how to reach his business in Seattle by either phone, mail, or Internet. If it's there, he has hidden it well.). Ms. Norman, being the scholar that she is, also has the better bibliography, although for the casual reader, the two are equally useful.

For herb and spice mix recipes, I find Ms. Norman's selection to be just a bit more useful, although I strongly suggest you get both books for the ways in which the two complement one another. While Ms. Norman gives us six different variations on a bouquet garni, she has but one recipe for a barbecue spice rub, while American Hill gives us recipes for Memphis style, Kansas style, and Carolina style spice rubs plus a Louisiana spice mix for both Cajun and Creole dishes.

The greatest weakness in Mr. Hill's book is the fact that his photographs accompanying each essay are in black and white. All his color illustrations are in a special rotogravure section on their own center section. Ms. Norman's book, on the other hand, is in full color with excellent illustrations accompanying all her information on each species and variety. This is odd, since Ms. Norman's book lists at $30 and Mr. Hill's book lists at $40 U.S.

So, if you must have just one herb and spice book, Ms. Norman's book is the easy choice. But, if you are an avid student of the nuances of herbs and spices, especially if you happen to be a culinary professional who buys herbs and spices wholesale, I strongly recommend you get a copy of Mr. Hill's book. If you also happen to be a foodie who likes interesting talk about all food matters, I also suggest you stop now and click on the little button for ordering this volume. The one to two page essays accompanying each named species or variety is rich with personal experiences with these plant products as well as rare information on coaxing the best performance and value out of your purchases. The fact that they are so personal and immediate makes them that much more interesting to read.

Highly recommended `second book' on herbs and spices.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Reference!.......2004-12-01

Living in Seattle, I have the pleasure of shopping in Tony's culinary "lair" of herbs, spices and teas, and is at least a monthly venture if not more often.

You just wont see a walking encyclopedia of seasonings like Tony. And I have been anxiously awaiting this book for years.

You will find great background on many of your favorite herbs and spices as well as information on many of the obscure ones. Tony gives great backgound on uses, buying seasons, and more.

There are wonderful recipies that show off particular seasonings, and I have begun the task of experiencing these great pleasures, in order to find out how to better my own cooking.

You will enjoy!

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Harvard's Houghton Library in 1992, Curator of Manuscripts Rodney Dennis asked a stellar cast of critics, historians, and curators to write on items selected from the library's rich trove of manuscripts, which ranges from the papyrus fragments and ostraca of Antiquity to the papers of such modern figures as Elizabeth Bishop and Leon Trotsky. The result was Marks in the Fields, an extraordinary collection of essays by the likes of Helen Vendler, Christopher Ricks, and Lawrence Buell, which, in Dennis's words, combine to highlight "the natural patterns" found in manuscripts of all times and places, patterns that "go on occurring, everywhere and forever astonishing the mind."

        4 out of 5 stars classroom crafts.......2007-05-13

I've used a few of the projects in this book with my Kindergarten students. They were able to create the crafts without much difficulty or adult assistance. I like the book, but wish it contained an even larger variety of project
        examples.

5 out of 5 stars Nicole was no angel........2007-09-18

Terri, you did a beautiful job. I rented the book from the library and now I must own it. Your expresed yourself clearly about what it is like to have a famous person in your family. I know that Nicole was no angel and was even worse when she drank. I wondered how many people knew that she was under therapy for her temper. She pushed your uncle's buttons and one day she pushed to hard. It is just that simple. Just the things she would say to him about pushing a man around in a wheel chair one day. Well sweetheart that man that you are pushing around in that wheelchair made it possible for you to live the life that you did live. I will never understand this though, if she was oh so afraid of him, why did she go back to him?? He was doing very well with Paula until she wanted to come home, like some spoiled brat. Now I am not saying what happened to her should have happened to her; but I am saying that once you are divorced and have a one-half million dollar settlement plus child support, then you move clear across country. No but she had to stay up under O. J. For what love??? I don't think so.

5 out of 5 stars A novel on the trial of the century.......2007-06-29

When the OJ Simpson trial was being shown on television every night, I was about 12 years old, and never gave it my full attention. I was cognizant that most people thought that he had murdered his wife and her friend, but I didn't take the time to watch the happenings of the trial; it's just not a topic that will typically hold a 12 year old's attention. Now that I am 21, I am interested in knowing the facts as well as the skepticisms of the trial and murder. Terri Baker, (OJ Simpson's niece) did a great job of filling me in.

Terri candidly informs her reader that OJ Simpson never really took up much time with his blood relatives. He preferred spending his leisure with Nicole Brown's family and his celebrity friends. On special occasions, the Simpson family would come together as a family, everyone except OJ. His visits were sporadic, and when he was around, his mind was somewhere else and everyone catered to his needs. She also says that the family had always put OJ on a pedestal, and no one ever confronted him with anything, even if they felt that he was doing something wrong. His money? Well, he made sure that he and Nicole lived lavishly, but he wasn't very generous with the Simpson family. In fact, they really didn't reap any financial benefits from OJ.

OJ was physically abusive and very possessive of Nicole. The book states that there are recordings of Nicole calling the police because OJ had struck her. There are also photographs illustrating a battered Nicole.

Terri was very vocal about the deaths of Nicole and Ron Goldman and the infamous "trial of the century." Although the Simpson was not very forthcoming with their feelings concerning the murders, Terri had a very difficult time coping. She was having problems at her job and eventually stopped working, and got heavy into alcohol. To this day, she is unsure if her Uncle committed those crimes, but it is something that will bother her for as long as she lives.

She also let us know how spaced out her uncle was, namely during and after the trial. The day the verdict was announced, they threw a party at OJ's house, and someone congratulated him and asked him how it felt to be home, and he looked at them like they were insane. Terri also mentioned that during the trial, OJ had a very impassive look on his face which drew even more skepticism as to whether or not he is guilty.

I really, really enjoyed this book and all it said about OJ and the lives of he and his family. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to become more knowledgeable of the trial of the century.

                5 out of 5 stars Terri's Story.......2005-11-09

I thought this book was very good. Terri did not take sides in this book. she stood by her family even when she had doubts about her uncle. terri tells us over and over in the book how OJ has little to do with his family. I am glad to see that she saw this and was not blind like most of her family was. it is good to hear she has her life back on track. good book with lots of info about OJ and his family.

                4 out of 5 stars Family Loyalty & Unconditional Love...Up Close & Personal.......2004-11-05

Terri Baker has produced a well written book based on her eyewitness account of the O.J. Simpson murder trial and all that followed. I feel that to say I "enjoyed" the book would be somewhat sadistic, but it was worth the read for anyone that had any type of interest in O.J. Simpson and/or the murder investigation and trial.

This appears to have been a labor of unconditional love, self-analysis, loyalty, forgiveness and healing. It took courage to write a book that is so personally revealing of herself, The Browns, The Goldmans, The Dream Team, Kato Kaelin, Paula Barbieri her Uncle O.J., Rockingham and the rest of the Simpson family. As I read this book, I felt as if I was there among all the family, friends, groupies, media and those that were along for the celebrity ride. Ms. Baker has given her readers an up close and personal view of everything one could imagine and then some things one probably had not thought of. At times I felt she gave the reader more information than we really needed to know, but in order for the reader to fully understand...she had to let the reader into those sacred, private and personal moments.

Her compelling accounts of the various incidents, conflicts, awkard moments and private moments made me feel her every emotion. She provides information about Nicole that not even the tabloids exposed. However, she did not provide a lot of information about Justin and Sydney, but I can understand her respecting the innocent children that have lost more than anyone in this entire ordeal.

If you take away the "celebrity" from the Simpson Family...you have just about any family in the world. The issues and family secrets that the Simpsons share are typical of many dysfunctional families. But most people probably have never really analyzed things as deeply as Ms. Baker did.

Upon finishing the book, I felt that Ms. Baker has made peace with her dysfunctional family, confronted and conquered her demons, picked up the pieces of her life that were lost during the trial and learned how to make lemonade out of lemons.

The book left me wondering though...has O.J. ever shown any gratitude to his family for their dedication, love and loyalty during his ordeal. Did he learn anything from all of this? Has he read this book? How does he feel about this book? Some family members lost jobs and money by choosing to stand by his side all those months. The traveling back and forth, the great financial expense and personal scarifice was a high price to pay. I do hope that he eventually lavished his family with some financial blessings as he did for The Browns and others over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Not at all what it seems........2001-07-12

When I first bought the book,"I'm Not Dancing Anymore" by O.J. Simpsons neice I thought it was going to be another book trashing O.J. I really thought I was going to sit down read the book and hear about how awfuel O.J. was, but I was completly wrong. Terri Baker describes a completly different character of Nicole Simpson. Nicole was described as having a bad temper, writing people off and contributing to her argumets with O.J. In all the books that I had read so far,(and I have read all but five)not one book describes the pain that the Simpson family went throught throughout the trial. Miss.Baker did mention that for a while she never really knew who her Uncle O.J. was growing up because he was never really around. This book having been written by one of the Simpson family member, was not a book to defend him and not a book to blame him, she just told us in her eyes who O.J. Simpson was to his family. This is one of the many best books about the Simpson case that is worth the reading.
