Book Description

She has been called "the Julia Child of mystery writers." Now, Diane Mott Davidson, who masterfully served up The Last Suppers, Killer Pancake, and Dying for Chocolate, returns with an irresistible five-star helping of suspense. When caterer Goldy Schulz takes a job with a multimillion-dollar financial firm, she finds herself in a high-stakes world where someone is out to make a killing....

Goldy, owner of Goldilocks' Catering, barely weathered a disastrous spring in which relentless rains and driving snow put a real damper on her business.  But now, thanks to her best friend, Marla, the Colorado caterer is suddenly cooking up a storm...lovingly preparing Crab Quesadillas, Tomato-Brie Pie, and Gold Foil-Wrapped Fudge Bars for her wealthy new client, Prospect Financial Partners.

The Prospect Partners' financial whiz, Tony Royce, with whom Marla is having a tempestuous affair, and Albert Lipscomb, who is personally managing Marla's money, have hired Goldy to prepare a sumptuous party to kick off their latest venture: the reopening of the Eurydice Gold Mine. Anxious to take advantage of a golden opportunity, Goldy arrives at the mine site early, loaded down with goodies. Yet just when she thinks she can relax, all hell breaks loose--and the main culprit is Marla.

Her best friend is sure the mine venture is a scam. And when, several days later, Albert ends up missing, it looks as if Marla was right. Why, then, is the police captain treating Goldy's best friend as if she had committed a crime? And how can Goldy keep her fourteen-year-old son Arch and his unreliable bloodhound from making matters worse?

As Goldy works furiously to restore her business by whipping up hot, fragrant Sour Cream Cherry Coffeecake and featherlight Cinnamon Scones, she finds
herself drawn into a most unusual situation of missing partners, stolen millions, and multiple homicides. And only when Goldy can discover which of the victims is the main corpse will she be able to unravel the mystery that threatens to cancel out her friend's dearest asset--her life.

4 out of 5 stars Slight Detail.......2007-05-27

I agree with other reviewers there were portions of this book that I found a little unplausible. However being a big Diane Mott Davidson fan I was able to overlook them and enjoy my favorite parts of the story; Goldy in the kitchen whipping up something wonderful. What bothered me was the name of a charactor Todd Druckman's mother(Eileen)in Tough Cookie Todd's mother's name is Eileen, yet in The Main Corpse her name is Kathleen, quite a typo also, in Tough Cookie Eileen Druckman is a close personal friend of Goldy's I just think an established friendship could have been referenced or at the very least the characters name referred to correctly.

Love these books, enjoyed each one, purchased and read all to date. Arrived promptly.

1 out of 5 stars Smell that?.......2007-03-21

Amazon asks that we focus on the product in our reviews. Okay. PEE-YEW!!! Is that focused, or what? This was a big stinker. I didn't like or care about anybody but the dog. And if Goldy's wondering why business is falling off, I gotta tell her that if I phoned a caterer and some little kid with an attitude answered and there was a BIG DOG barking in the kitchen, I'd hang up. Talk about your health code violations. But after reading this book I realize that is definitely the least of Davidson's worries: she's lost it, and obviously having trouble finding it again.

1 out of 5 stars ZERO stars.......2007-03-18

This was one of the most incredibly awful, unbelievably booooooooooooo-ring books I have tortured myself with in a long time. I listened to it on tape and, even though I usually enjoy listening to Barbara Rosenblatt and her versatile character voices and on-the-money accents, I found myself telling her to "settle down!" Her squeaking and babbling and up-and-down-the-vocal-scale made the book even harder to bear than the ridiculous, slogging plot did. I think she may have realized she was reading drivel and tried to dress it up with a regrettable amount of over-acting. Skip this one.

1 out of 5 stars I'm still hungry!.......2007-01-26

I just finished The Main Corpse and I must admit I'm still hungry, but not for more of Diane Mott Davidson. I found this book stretched the limits of plausibility just a bit too much for my taste.

For example, Goldy's relationship with Marla and with Tom just doesn't ring true with me. Marla is a selfish, arrogant b**tch who really doesn't deserve the risks that Goldy is willing to take for her (including putting her son in danger) and I agree with other reviewers that Goldy treats Tom very shabbily throughout the novel. I found the timing was off throughout - Goldy gets far more done in one day than I think is possible for anyone. Most of the characters just got on my nerves, especially poor Jake, who never quits howling! I also found the plot rather loose and a bit contrived. . . as if the author had gone back and added convenient details later just to make things click at the end.

I love a good light read and I wasn't expecting much from this book. I guess in that way I wasn't disapointed!

                      Book Description

In the third of the Chronicles of the Three Lands, Catherine, now an old woman, returns to Palindor along with her middle-aged son Michael and her rebellious teenaged granddaughter, Diana.

"Phendric" intertwines the stories of Catherine, Michael and Diana, along with many other characters from the earlier books, as well as several new ones. For the first time we meet Phendric, the grandson of Drefynt, of whom it was prophesied long ago that he would be "great and saving", and Toldwyn, long dead and now brought back from to face a final challenge in the dungeons of the castle in Carn Toldwyn. The story takes place not only in Palindor, but also in Malthazzar's realm, Sheol, culminating in a terrifying ordeal in the Pit itself, from which there can be no escape. The final book in the trilogy, this brings the saga of Catherine, High Queen of Palindor to a complete and satisfying conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Breaking Free From Emotional Eating.......2007-05-08

As a serial dieter, I was skeptical of anything claiming to help me "break free" from this millstone around my neck. But as I read the book I began to see what a novel approach Ms. Roth has outlined. It is clear, well-defined and, I think, do-able in the long run. It is not a fast fix and I cannot yet testify to its effectiveness, but I am hopeful and look forward to the soul searching and self-discovery that lies ahead. If nothing else, it has calmed me down, taken away a large part of my dispair, and given me a glimpse of possible freedom from my addiction.

                      5 out of 5 stars Body/mind balance.......2007-04-01

It's a good book but I didn't realise until it arrived from Amazon that I already had the book. The original was released as Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating. This is Breaking Free from Emotional Eating.

I have to confess to feeling slightly cheated having bought the same book twice!!! I've given it 4 stars because it's a good book but I was pretty frustrated to receive a book I'd already read

5 out of 5 stars This book has saved my life!.......2006-07-10

I have had problems with emotional eating/binge eating on and off for over 15 years. Geneen Roth shares her struggle with emotional eating and as you are reading you feel as if you are not alone. That many other people share your struggle and there is help. This book is based on her work shops with exercises but mainly deep reading that really gets you to re-set how you think about yourself. I have and I do recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2006-01-26

If you are interested in mindful eating, this is a great book. It was suggested to me from a woman I know who 'recovered' from an ED over 8 years ago, and this (and, actually, all of Geneen's books - check out 'why weight') was the number one thing she suggested I read.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook.......2007-05-16

Our family likes to try new recipes often and this cookbook is my favorite for several reasons. There are lots of color pictures throughout the book. Every recipe I've tried has clear instructions and the food turned out the way it was suppose to each time. And the introduction explains that all the recipes in this book have all been tested in the pillsbury test kitchens and were good enough to compete in the Bake-off contest which gives me some confidence to spend the money on ingredients and try them out. Some of my family's favorites so far are Thai Curry Chicken and Vegetables, Sherried Mushroom Bisque, Chicken-Chile Stromboli, Cheddar Thyme Casserole Bread (Don't over heat the buttermilk), Smoked Turkey Quesadillas, and White Chocolate Raspberry Torte.

4 out of 5 stars Bake with the Best!.......2006-06-04

Paging through this cookbook is always a bit of an adventure and promises to yield a delicious dish for just about every occasion. Whether you are looking for a dessert (some of the best recipes in this book are for desserts) or for a main dish, there is something for everyone in this book.

Some of my family's favorites include Creamy Broccoli and Rice Soup, Savory Crescent Chicken Squares, and Ramen Vegetable Beef Stir-Fry. Our favorite goodies include Caramel-Filled Chocolate Cookies, Pecan Pie Surprise Bars, Raspberry Filled White Chocolate Bars, Caramel Apple Cake, Peanut Butter Crunch Cake, and Cookie Cheesecake Squares.

I have used this cookbook on many occasions and although I love the recipes, I wish that the book was in a binder instead of a hardcover book. Also, I tend to like cookbooks with more pictures, but I felt that the stories that were included about many of the winners was an excellent addition to this book. Overall, I highly enjoy trying many of these recipes and I feel it is an excellent addition to any cookbook collection.

                      Enjoy!

I was so happy to find this cookbook for my friend who is losing her eyesight. I plan on giving it to her for Christmas. I am sure she will enjoy being able to read the recipes with less difficulty.

                      Enjoy!

                        Book Description

An Italian ethnobotanist explores the remarkable propensity of wild animals to seek out and use psychoactive substances.

                        • Throws out behaviorist theories that claim animals have no consciousness.

                        • Offers a completely new understanding of the role psychedelics play in the development of consciousness in all species.

                        • Reveals drug use to be a natural instinct.

From caffeine-dependent goats to nectar addicted ants, the animal kingdom offers amazing examples of wild animals and insects seeking out and consuming the psychoactive substances in their environments. Author Giorgio Samorini explores this little-known phenomenon and suggests that, far from being confined to humans, the desire to experience altered states of consciousness is a natural drive shared by all living beings and that animals engage in these behaviors deliberately. Rejecting the Western cultural assumption that using drugs is a negative action or the result of an illness, Samorini opens our eyes to the possibility that beings who consume psychedelics--whether humans or animals--contribute to the evolution of their species by creating entirely new patterns of behavior that eventually will be adopted by other members of that species. The author's fascinating accounts of mushroom-loving reindeer, intoxicated birds, and drunken elephants ensure that readers will never view the animal world in quite the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to chemognosis information!.......2007-01-15

I had heard good things about this book, which apparently is pretty well unique in its field (not a surprise there). It's really more of a long academic paper in paperback book format, but it's worth the read.

The first part of the book is dedicated to defining what a drug is and what its inherent functions are. He also introduces us to the basic idea of animals deliberately seeking out specific plants (even carnivorous animals) to meet certain ends beyond nutrition-to aid in healing, or to alter the state of consciousness the animals are in.

The bulk of the book is composed of specific examples of animals drugging themselves. More well-known examples, such as cats getting high on catnip, or elephants seeking both natural and manmade alcohol, are cited. However, Samorini also discusses California robins gorging themselves on holly berries, caribou and reindeer devouring Amanita muscaria, and drunken slugs. It would seem that drug-induced altered states are found from insects to mammals, from the Arctic to the savannah, and are definitely not limited to the human animal.

The final chapter is where the author really shows off his ideas. These can be summarized thus: that animals do, indeed, intentionally drug themselves, and that the resultant altered states of consciousness are a part of evolution. While I agree with the first half of this, there's much evidence lacking in the second. We have yet to show a definite connection between animal intoxication, and the changes in a species' behavior, which he postulates. However, in Samorini's defense, this is such a niche area of research that only has a handful of people studying it that this particular book is pretty much the first one to focus exclusively on it, or so he says. I'm inclined to agree, as it's the only book I know of either on the topic or-for that matter-by this author.

Overall, I really enjoyed this brief but good read. While the final evidence isn't complete, this is understandable in light of the limited research available. However, it is a groundbreaking text, IMO, in the area of chemognosis, as it supports the idea that seeking altered states through drugs is natural, rather than an unhealthy human compulsion that inevitably leads to ruin. The inclusion of cases of animals being addicted to alcohol, caffeine and tobacco, right along with marijuana, datura and psilocybin mushrooms, is also useful for showing that intoxication doesn't discriminate on the basis of human choices.

5 out of 5 stars this book rocks.......2006-08-17

please, this book is one of a kind, because where else are you going to find out exactly which animals get high on exactly which plant, shrooms, or berries. Not only does this make for cool conversation but it is golden information in terms of shamanism and zoology. I guess you have to be a certain kind of person to appreciate it.An animal lover, shaman, tripper, drug user or a combo of the above.

                        2 out of 5 stars Rehashed mishmash.......2006-03-13

The author admits that this is largely a recap of Siegel's 1989 Intoxication. Like a skipping stone, Samorini only knicks the tops off of profound ideas. There's no depth of natural history or chemistry to be found in this short book. To make matters worse, the translation is horrid: the book abounds with typos and other errors that leave me wondering what the heck Samorini really meant.

4 out of 5 stars Lucy in the sky with felines.......2003-12-17

a powerful, dazzling display of authority on subject matter that gives "animals" their rightful place among "humans" as proud and adept explorers of the more interesting entheogenic realms.

This work, without over doing it on the anthropomorphic side, renders our fellow animals in a positive light that suggests they, too, have their very own forms of consciousness.

                        Very enlightening, heady stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Evolution by inebriation!.......2003-12-04

This humorous and entertaining book deals with the use of psychedelic substances by our 4-footed and 6-legged friends. The author, an ethnobotanist, provides amazing examples of animals and insects seeking out and consuming psycho-active substances in their environments.

Samorini suggests that the desire to experience altered states of consciousness is a natural drive shared by all living beings. This urge is not confined to humans because animals/insects deliberately engage in these behaviors. His theory is that beings that consume these substances contribute to the evolution of their species by creating new patterns of behavior that are eventually adopted by the other members of the species, in what he humorously terms "evolution by inebriation."

He deals with crazed cows who love locoweed (Astralagus), elephants, slugs and snails, felines and catnip, reindeer and caribou tripping on the Amanita mushroom, goats that have a liking for coffee and khat (Catha Edulis), birds that binge (robins and the pink pigeon of the Mauritian islands), koalas, baboons and rats, plus insects like the house fly (Amanita again), moths, bees and butterflies.

Samorini concludes with the observation that a distinction must be made between a drug phenomenon that is natural and a drug problem that is a cultural problem. This insightful book concludes with a bibliography and index.

Other interesting titles on this topic includes DMT: The Spirit Molecule by Rick Strassman, Moksha by Aldous Huxley, Magic Mushrooms In Religion And Alchemy by Clark Heinrich and Persephone's Quest by R. Gordon Wasson.

It even contains information about pearls, which I thought surprising. I only wish it was more updated, bcause I have had it for 2.5 years, and went to amazon to see if a third version was issued.

At Last a book that makes sense of the wide disparity of gem prices. Each type of gem is broken down into as many as 20 price ranges. By size, by color, by clarity. Want to know WHY there can be thousands of dollars difference in stones of the same type & size? Buy this book! This book is a reference book. Lot's of information & data, but few pictures. I found it more useful when used with "Gemstone Buying Guide", by Rene' Newmann. As a neophite, seeing the pictures in the Newmann book & referencing the valuation tables in this book really helped me evaluate what I was buying. If you buy from TV shows or over the internet, the more information you have, the better your chances are of not overpaying.

For Talula Gilbert Bottoms, the author's grandmother and an incredibly prolific quiltmaker, the process of making quilts both enhanced and lengthened her life, and the quilts she left forged connections among her many descendants. And, as the granddaughter reminds us, "Handmade quilts can still cross generations to provide ... those same benefits even in our own fast-moving and uncertain world." Family Ties is a treasury of wonderful quilt patterns (38 in all) based on Talula's creations, which were made in a time before printed patterns were readily available. (She often borrowed quilts from others to draft the designs herself.) Each pattern includes color photos of both Talula's lovely original and a stunning modern interpretation, along with the author's comments about the pattern and its relevance to her grandmother's life. Although this is not a how-to book, there are templates for all the patterns, plus brief construction notes. This is a fascinating glimpse into one woman's life as told through her highly accomplished needlework. --Amy Handy

Now, in Crafts of Provence, designer Amelia Saint George shows you how to bring Provenal style and artisanry into your home. Let me start by saying that I have a profound admiration not only for the South of France and its style but also for all places where one can deploy a simple yet refined lifestyle. This book offers an extra bonus. It actually teaches you how to achieve it, not just sit and daydream about it. Which you can do, anyway ! The reason I do not give it all five stars ? Well, Ms. St. George, please offer us some more ideas in the future!

Coming Home to Jerusalem: A Personal Journey is an intelligent, entertaining, politically astute memoir by Wendy Orange, who from 1991 to 1997 was the Mideast correspondent for Tikkun, a leading American Jewish magazine. One autumn morning in 1990 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Orange realized that she would never feel at home where she lived--a feeling that she compared to "the claustrophobic awareness that you've just married the wrong person." Several months later, she realized that she was homesick for a place she had never been before: while watching CNN reports from Jerusalem at the outbreak of the Gulf War, she was struck with an awareness that "the Israelis on the streets ... all felt familiar. They looked and dressed like me and my friends, were the same age, had the same verbal intonations as they spoke." Shortly thereafter, she visited Israel for the first time. Not long after her visit, she packed eight cardboard boxes, left her job, and took her young daughter Eliza with her to Jerusalem, for what she imagined would be forever.

The story that follows, Coming Home to Jerusalem, is a tightly plotted play in a "theatre of incongruous, gruff, sexy, close-minded, religious, secular, cruel, funny, and excitable characters." Along the way, Orange offers plenty of insight on the political and religious conflicts that dominated Jerusalem's life during her time there. But the real strength of this book is its sprawling constellation of character studies of Holocaust survivors, famous writers, failed artists, politically elite people, and a cab driver with whom Orange falls in love. Coming Home to Jerusalem is essentially a travelogue, and it does what good travel writing should--it makes you want to go. --Michael Joseph Gross

                              Book Description

An American Jewish woman uproots her family to live in Jerusalem, searching for a new home. For Wendy Orange, a writer in her early forties, what starts as a ten-day conference in Jerusalem stretches into a six-year residence in one of the world's most captivating cities, where she undertakes an illuminating and evocative trip to both banks of this ancient land.

Amid language barriers, household drama, homesickness, and a halting job search, Wendy Orange strives to settle her small family in Israel for the long term. Her sociability and interest in her surroundings fast connect her to a wide assortment of Israel's varied personalities: famous authors, ob-scure artists, politicians, psychologists, journalists, American-Israeli housewives, evangelical Christian teachers. She meets a long-lost family friend who came to Jerusalem in the 1948 war, and she comes to know sabras who are wearying of the life she finds fascinating and compelling. She is introduced to Holocaust survivors who arrived shattered to work the land on farms. She meets therapists who blame her problems on American self-absorption, and rabbis obsessed with the Torah whose lectures she yearns to understand. She goes to a picnic with absolutist West Bank settlers. She falls in love with a Moroccan-Israeli cab driver and receives an education in Israel's class schisms.

When Orange gets a job as the Israel correspondent for an American magazine, she crosses the Green Line that separates Israelis from displaced Palestinians and she begins a journey through another country she comes to love. Crisscrossing from Israel to the territories, Orange confronts views of the world that are completely at odds and she experiences in a profound way the ancient conflicts as she becomes absorbed with people who are at polar extremes: peaceniks and settlers, the political elite and the downtrodden, high-profile intellectuals and young soldiers. She is drawn into subcultures that coexist, if barely, throughout Israel. In Coming Home to Jerusalem, Wendy Orange brings to life the extraordinary and the everyday in a country she tries to make her own.

                              5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2003-06-03

As an Israeli living in Maui, I was drawn back to Israel through this book. "Coming Home to Jerusalem actually made me want to go back home, to the city where I was born. (I'm a fourth generation Jerusalemite.) I felt that the author, an American, knew Israel of the 1990's even better than I did. Now, I'm en route "home" after years abroad. And I thank Wendy Orange for getting me in touch with my Zionism, my love for Israel despite all the problems she shows and I know. 5 Stars.

4 out of 5 stars Arab vs. Jew: Drama Without Ending?.......2003-04-24

"For hundreds of years large numbers of Arabs have lived in Palestine. Their fathers and fathers' fathers were born here. Palestine is their country where they want to live. We must acknowledge that fact with love."
The surprising author of these lines was David Ben-Gurion, the legendary Zionist leader who became the first prime minister of the State of Israel.
Ben-Gurion's compassionate words underscore one side of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis that has threatened for decades
to engulf not only the Middle East but the world. On the other
hand there is the claim of the much-tormented Jewish people, whose historic ties to the very same land are even
older.Surely they should be allowed to return to their homeland
                              and live at lastin peace?
Both claims are just. How can we judge justly between them? And
how soon can we judge, if ever?
Wendy Orange's memoir, "Coming Home To Jerusalem." is one
woman's attempt to answer these questions, at least to her own
                              satisfaction.

Orange grew up in an ardently Zionist American Jewish family,
but she did not share their enthusiasm for the idea of a Jewish
state. Instead, she studied the Holocaust with great intensity.
She became a professional therapist and, later, a journalist. In the early 1990s she was persuaded to attend a conference in
Jerusalem. As a result of hearing a talk by famed novelist
A.M.Yehoshua she decided to make aliya, or immigrate to Israel.
Yehoshua's impact was all the more extraordinary in that his
talk was delivered in Hebrew, a language whe did not yet
                              understand.
Working as a journalist in her adopted country, Orange made
contact with her Palestinian counterparts and began to do
stories from the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. She
was distressed by evidence of brutality on the part of Israel
Defense Force soldiers. Such conduct does happen, as the writer
of this review saw on a bus in Jerusalem once; but it is
important to keep in mind the historical circumstances that have
                              bred this kind of behavior.
Orange kept her intellectual balance well--gazing at the
looming Golan Heights, formerly Syrian-occupied, she understood
what fear and physical suffering Syrian artillery once inflicted
on Jewish farmers and fishermen from those same heights. And she
felt a wave of sympathy for these victims, too, her own
people. In a soul-trying situation she is revealed as not a
                              hater of anyone.
As suggested earlier, Orange's work may be seen as a search for what Slovakian Holocaust heroine Gisi Fleischmann described
as "a better humanity." The search is pursued through a
landscape deeply scarred by history, and punctuated by depths
and heights almost impossible to imagine. An example of a height--a rare one--is the cautious euphoria generated by news of the
Oslo Accords, with their elusive hope of peace at last between
Israelis and Palestinians. The ultimate low may have been the
asassination of Israeli Prime Ninister Itzhak Rabin--by a fellow
Jew, albeit by one whose politics had nothing in common with
those of his famous victim. It is the murder of Rabin which,
even years later, seems to have been the most devastatingly
successful blow against the Middle East peace process.
Whether Wendy Orange's quest for justice and understanding will have a happier outcome than Gisi Fleischmann's remains to be
seen. Perhaps she herself does not believe in the possibility,
for at the end of her memoir she writes, "This drama has
everything but an ending, I think."
"Coming Home To Jerusalem" may be considered depressing by many.It is, on the other hand, an important read for those who wish to understand the human dimension of the Middle East
tragedy. And it is beautifully written.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and evocative.......2002-07-13

I really enjoyed this book. It was very well written and heartfelt, with unbiased, evocative descriptions of people and places. Made me want to hop on a plane and go there immediately!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Middle East.......2002-05-27

As an author myself, I understand how what looks easy on the page in fact takes years to perfect. Wendy Orange's book, "Coming Home to Jerusalem" may read as effortless but I can well imagine the work that went into making this lovely book, a combination personal adventure, cultural odyssey and political update from Israel.

Given the current givens, some may think this is history. I prefer to think of this easy to read book as futuristic, what must eventually occur between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Especially I learned a lot from the dialogue groups she so vividly describes. Strangely, in the midst of a tortuous road, full of warring, I felt elated by her book because I saw what is inevitable, that the cycle of peace must return. Orange shows what that will look like. She also shows real characters which makes all the wanton violence now sadder. I hope most of her characters, and there are many, are still alive. High recommend.
                              Five Stars for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for students in 12th grade or higher.......2002-04-18

I teach high school in Brooklyn. The kids are sick of hearing about the Middle East on the news. They groaned when I said we were going to read some books about it. But I just ordered for my class "Coming Home to Jerusalem" because other teachers told me that their students learned so much and enjoyed this book.

When my sister gave me her copy to read, I couldn't put it down. The history teacher, 12th grade, who teaches "gifted" students said that it was a big hit in her class. I look forward to seeing how my "kids" respond. A rare book that is for adults and smart kids as well. It's a classic, a keeper. 5 stars.
