True Agatha Christie, this book is full of plot twists and surprises, interesting characters and fun. It was a nice addition to my collection

5 out of 5 stars It's Agatha Christie, It's a Must Read.......2007-03-24

If you love mystery books, anything by Agatha Christie is a must read. She is known and for good reason, as the "Queen of Mystery". Although mainly known as an novelist, she was also known as a amateur archeologist(she was married to an archeologist and often travelled with him)and playwright.
The stories are written in a play format, hence there are many bracketed directions for the actors and may be distracting. However, the stories are pure Agatha Christie-- murder, intrigue, suspense and of course, a touch anti-climax thrown in.

5 out of 5 stars I love Ms. Marple Mysteries.......2007-03-09

My favorite readings are mysteries. Agatha Christie is one of my favorite author. I went to London in the 70's and saw some of Agatha Christie's plays, "The Mouse Trap" was one of them.

4 out of 5 stars There are some really good plays in here.......2006-04-18

My personal favourite was "Ten Little Indians" with "The Mousetrap" coming in close second. "Witness for the Prosecution" and "Go back for Murder" were also pretty good. I felt as though the rest of the plays focused far too much on the character backstories and not enough on the actual murder at hand. But they aren't boring because Agatha Christie is a literary genius when it comes to murder mysteries!

4 out of 5 stars The Mouse Trap.......2006-03-19

Agatha Christie chisled a winner with her sharp little pen. This was one that I had absolutely no idea "who done it" and clues were all over this one like butter over a turkey.
A must read!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2003-10-08

This was a wonderful book, I belive Agatha Christie to be the best mystery play writer. Her stories are very well written and she intertwines the nursery rymes very well, and still i am surprised at all the endings.I perticuly enjoyed the Moustra,. I was interested that play for an audition for my school production of the Moustrap and was happy to have many other wonderful plays in the book. It was inexpensive and in very good condition. I recommend it for all.

                2 out of 5 stars "Kannon Chikara!".......2005-10-05

When I first viewed the "Arm of Kannon" sitting so innocently upon the shelf of a Border's book store, I'd hoped that the title would have something utterly devious and be irreplaceably mixed up in battles centered around the Boddhisatva Kwannon (known to many as the Asian "Goddess of Mercy"). Being an enormous fan of the anime "Doomed Megalopolis", I was really hoping this would be a similarly serious anime that concerned Kwannon and her all pure benevolence. However, now I know that I was almost treated to an uninteresting and derivative tale concerning an apathetic teenager and his panty flashing sister. It's a good thing I stacked the book after reading the first few pages because, judging from the plot, it simply gets more and more pathetic. Honestly, I was expecting a mature with mature characters and a complex and deep plot. Instead I get sex, violence, off-leading comedy and more sex. It goes farther and farther from Kwannon and purity, when it should be attempting to weave itself closer to there.

When I saw the first page of this, my hopes changed to accodomate the content. I thought that since they had the artistic liscense (with the 18+ rating), they have the potential for forming a really personal and thoughtful plot that would appeal to those primary adolescent male readers who would buy this manga, right? "Doomed Megalopolis" was a 17+ anime and still, that is one of the most powerful anti-violence stories that I have ever viewed. I went along with this speculation for my intial reading experience and eventually produced my first interpretation of the plot:

A young 16 year old boy named Mao is having a erotic dream about his older sister. He wakes up screaming her name and she comes rushing in to calm him down. She decides to lie in bed with him to make him feel better, but consequentally discovers that he had a wet dream. She giggles at him like a normal teenage girl and then leaves, completely oblivious to the fact that he was eroticizing about her. Meanwhile, there is an unnamed swordsman with ridiculous hair going around slicing up demons around Shinjuku's streets in the middle of the night. The next day, Mao and Maya go to their new school but unfortunately stumble into a gang of nasty thugs. However, the swordsman intervenes and sends the thugs fleeing for their lives. He makes several sensual passes at Maya, while making his case about how he's been assigned to be Mao's bodyguard. After feeling up Maya on all possible angles, the swordsman disappears into the street. A monk arrives at that moment and immediately tells Mao that the swordsman who just left was indeed Mao and Maya's father.

At first it seems to be about incest to the extreme and a boy's internal conflict over the innate lust he has for his sister.

This is not what the story's about at all.

Apparently, I was completely wrong and eventually I discover that the real plot does not concern incest, as much as it concerns sex. The father is not the swordsman but rather an old man who turns into a monster after finding the "Arm of Senju Kannon". Mao was not fantasizing about his sister, but was apparently fantasizing about some unknown woman with a bleeding scar in her belly. Oh thanks, Yamaguchi. Your art is so great; every female character looks exactly the same. They might as all well be Mao's sister! Furthermore, the story absolutely has nothing to do with Kwannon or monks at all. The Arm of Kannon is evil in this tale; which makes no sense! How could the arm of a Goddess of Mercy possibly be corrupt!? Kwannon is divine and pure on all accounts, and associating her benevolence with a monstrosity like this arm is not only offensive to Buddhism. From an intellectual standpoint, its just plain stupid! It's like saying the Virgin Mary's veil would turn a person into Darth Vader or something like that. On top of that, there's this oblivious government agency which wants to collect the Arm of Kannon for themselves and exploit it's fantastic power. Secret government agency...now that's an "original" idea. It really doesn't get any better from there. Also, since I didn't understand it the first time; it proves that the story doesn't really hold well together in the first place.

This could have been a story about Kwannon! This could have been a story about the turmoils of male sexuality! This could have been all tied together with Maya becoming a Bodhissatva who morphs into Kwannon, or something like that (which would explain why she's so attractive to her relatives). Instead we get some dumb, derivative junk plot which justs goes to show me that anime is not a very unique form of expression at all.

In addition, the actual dynamic art in this book is pathetically generic and lame. The battle scenes are drawn with very lousy transitions which make the action feel like it's not moving at all. For example, the first battle between the swordsman and the monster feels like it's finished in three panels. A picture of the swordsman, a picture of the monster, and a picture of the dead monster. How exciting. "Hellsing" has much more fantastic and dramatic action with amazing transitions and a very smooth flow! Kohta Hirano should have done this manga; then at least it would have been more exciting.

So the art's not so great. If the story was unique, then I could forgive this manga. However, even that goes to hell too after the first few pages. A story about Kwannon deserves much better than this. I have a suggestion; get rid of the teenagers and throw in the monks. "Doomed Megalopolis" was a fantastic anime about priests and demons, and that had a perfect representation of Kwannon. My mistake was that I came in here expecting another "Doomed Megalopolis" and instead was presented with "Goofy Manga meets Legend of the Overfiend with Angsty Teenager. Watch "Doomed Megalopolis"; it's a much more serious story and honestly represents what Kwannon is supposed to symbolize. Thank you Yamaguchi, but I'll worship Kuan-Yin in my own way.

3 out of 5 stars Solid story, but lacks effective presentation.......2005-03-23

Arm of Kannon Vol.1 is an enjoyable book with a very good story centered around Mao, a child who was abandoned by his father three years ago to search for an artifact, who is pursued by a group after the relic. Other than that, the first half of the story is relatively dull. The Arm of Kannon infected his father's soul, and so when he returns to his home, and finally meets his father, the story begins its violent swoop. Here's where a portion of the M rating comes in: Mao discovers his mother's body inside of the fridge, her head severed and blood leaking from the machine. Later in the scene, although it is a very small picture, after Mao's father transforms into a beast, he rapes him. When Mao is captured, tests are run on him, and there is a scene which involves the woman scientist taking a sperm sample, and they show it. The battle scenes aren't terribly exciting, but the artwork makes up for it, and it makes you want to continue reading the book. I personally don't think this is as bad a manga as previous reviewers have stated, but it's little more than mediocre.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of What You Look For.......2004-12-22

Mao is a teenager. His sister, mother and himself were left by his archeologist father several years ago. But one day as he and his sister are attacked by thugs, they are rescued by a mysterious super-warrior from Isurugi temple. He claims to be their bodyguard.

Then Mao discovers that his father has returned. He is an emaciated shell of his former self. He apparently went looking for a powerful artifact called the Arm of Senju Kannon, which he found and became possessed by. Now he wants to share it with his son. Mao makes some disturbing discoveries and is soon abducted by a secret research facility.

At the facility, they have been working on turning men into monsters using the unused DNA hidden away in everyone, especially the reptile DNA. They are very interested in Mao, the Arm and how it may have effected them.

This first volume is the only one so far without a parental warning and, oddly, has the most explicit scenes in the series so far. Although the series is called "The Arm of Kannon", the artifact is always referred to as the Arm of Senju Kannon. I have read the first several volumes and unlike other reviewers seen no similarity to "Overfiend" although the story of a weapon (sword, gauntlet, knife, etc.) that possesses its user is not new, this book pulls out most of the stops. While not the best horror comic I have read, it earns the title of horror better than most titles currently being written.

                2 out of 5 stars waste........2004-09-17

not only did i waste my money on vol. 1 of the arm of kannon, but for some reason when i was at the book store i bought the first three volumes. bad choice. this manga sucks. first off, the story is kind of interesting, however the author didnt put it together very well, and when the dialouge and drawing is lame, then you're not in for an enjoyable time. the art is quite dark and spastic, but it isnt used tastfully at all. the action scenes are pretty boring, nothing you've never seen and alot of times its pretty hard to tell whats going on. there also is a fair bit of nudity, not used tastfully at all either. by tastfully i dont mean make it prudish, i just mean use it where its needed and dont just throw it in the comic because your story and characters suck. overall a boring book, as are the following volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Odd if anything.......2004-07-05

I picked this up during a vacation to occupy some time. I read the back of the book at the store thinking it might be interesting. Like the title of my review said, it was an odd manga. Its a dark manga if anything but i enjoyed it. The few sexual scenes weren't completely vital the the story, but they really didn't take much away from the manga. One thing I did like about it was the plot/story. Its definitely a story that you won't have read before. If you like darker manga then pick this one up, but if you're a "happy-manga" reader, this isn't going to be one of your top ten.

5 out of 5 stars depicts PPD perfectly.......2007-09-30

I, too, had severe PPD. I, too, have written a book about it. This is 50 times better than Marie Osmond's book. If you are gettting it because it's written by a celebrity..well I suppose that's appealing to some people...but this was not like Marie's book in that regard. Brooke comes across as a regular person. PPD is not picky about who it afflicts. Brooke is real and open and brutally honest. She helped me identify some feelings I'd not been able to express. Thank you, Brooke, for doing such a great job! I have no idea what you could've done better. In my opinion, this was dead on and flawless. If you don't buy my book, buy Brooke's!

3 out of 5 stars Just OK - not really that much on PPD.......2007-09-10

It felt like the PPD was discussed very briefly and most of the book was her telling her story of how she grew up, how she wanted a baby, how hard it was to get there, how she missed her old life, how she then loved her baby, how cute her baby is, how she balanced her career and motherhood, her relationship with her mother, yada yada yada. I certainly wouldn't read this book to learn about PPD. It is just an easy read book if you are interested in looking into the lives of celebrities.

I'm so glad i bought this book. I was suffering from postpartum depression, and I was ashamed of the thoughts that i was thinking and why i didnt feel a bond with my daughter... I read the book and it made me realize I needed to do something about it. GREAT BOOK!!

                  5 out of 5 stars Honestly Written.......2007-08-15

Honestly written, so truthful,I am sure it was as painful to write as it was to experience. This had to be. For Tom (Jack*ff) Cruise to go spurting off his ideas and opinions(opinions obviously not solicited from Brook or her husband) was not only in poor taste, but dangerous. What is wrong with him? Not that I think America at large listens to Tom, I for one will not buy any paper, book, see any movie or show that endorses him. As for his poor wife katie Holmes she looks miserable and should run....not walk away from this marriage. He is as lousy as a bedside doctor as he is an actor. Matt Lauer should have b*tched slapped him when he got in his face. While I myself had uneventful pregnancies and no problems after(NO blues, thank God)It is thoughtful and honest and gives other women hope. God Bless Brook and her children.

                  5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! .......2007-07-09

I never enjoyed a book this much in my life! YOU ROCK BROOKE!! I love the way she writes and her humor was so refreshing. I felt the same pain and the tears would stream down one minute and laugther the next. I'm 37yrs now and I suffered 2 Ectopic pregnancies with in five months of each other and wound up in the hospital both times having emergency surgery. We went thru the IUI procedure as well and now we are moving on to IVF next month August 2007 and I'm so grateful to have read this book. Please write more Brooke. Thank you so much thank you!!!

                    Book Description

This collection of true stories celebrates the lives of a handful of vagabond dogs who spurned confinement and one-family ownership. Each dog's tale is unique: Boozer had his own bank account and appeared on Good Morning America; Owney spent his life riding U.S. mail trains and can now be seen in the Smithsonian Institute; Greyfriars Bobby snuck into the cemetery every night for 14 years to sleep on his deceased master's grave; Lampo became famous for riding the railways of Italy but always returned to the same station; Tricksey offered companionship to the residents of a nursing home; Patsy Ann watched the shores of Alaska and knew before all others that a ship was arriving even though she was stone deaf. These atypical dogs all share the same independent spirit that inspires human admiration and devotion. It Takes a Dog to Raise a Village is a tribute to their spirit and their unusual bonds with the humans who knew them. The text is highlighted by pen and ink drawings.

The new layout for the index is very frustrating and not even complete. The last part of the index has been left off. Also, found there are some key sets that aren't listed, such as Donruss Preferred, Topps Gold and many of the Pinnacle sets. They also failed to include some insert sets for key brands. I know this is a hugh undertaking, but they already have the information on their web site...for an additional charge. Despite all the problems, it is still the best price guide on the market. Just hope they do a better job on #26.

5 out of 5 stars The ideal price guide for collectors of older baseball cards.......2003-12-13

Beckett's monthly price guides can barely keep up with the baseball cards that are produced each year, let alone all those surplus sets and special collectible cards that are flooding the market. For those of us working on older cards (i.e., pre-Fleer/Donruss) these monthly price guides will give you prices, but are not much help in terms of determining what cards you need to complete your set. So if you are trying to finish up your 1953, 1966, and 1967 Topps sets, then it is necessary for you to know ALL the cards so when you hit the card shows you are prepared for dealers who organized their cards by numbers, players, or random piles. With the "Beckett Baseball Card Price Guide 2003) you have your best shot at finding out exactly what is out there for the set(s) on which you are currently working. In practical terms the prices quoted are going to be more valid the farther back you go, but the key thing about these Price Guides is that they list all the cards, including all the extras, inserts, special sets and the like from Bowman, Diamond Stars, Donruss, Fleer, Goudey, Play Ball, Score, Sportsflics, Topps. Upper Deck and whatever other companies have sprung up that I cannot remember off the top of my head in all their infinite variations. Beckett continues to be the Price Guide I use to put together my want list for the next card show or for checking out on line auctions. This is especially important when a set has numbers missing (it happens), so that you can avoid desperately searching for cards that are not there (e.g., the 1953 Topps set has 274 cards from #1 Jackie Robinson to #280 Milt Bolling). As always, there is also a concise and informative introductory section that will be of use to anyone who considers collecting baseball cards a serious hobby (is there any other kind?).

5 out of 5 stars pamela's books are the best out there on hair care.......2002-02-03

the only thing that i did not like about this book was the poor quality of the photographs. that is okay...i guess that kept the price of this book down. my mom use to wash my hair every weekend and oil my scalp with sulphur 8 OR bergamot. do you remember that? she did not let me get an relaxer until i was 15. I did not like it and let it grow out immediately and went back to pressing my hair until i turned 23. my cousins used relaxers in elementary school, way back in the early 70's when the choice of relaxers was probably 1 or 2 brands and the relaxers then were ultra harsh. they grew up with short, damaged hair that refused to grow past 3 inches and i did not. the worst thing that i did was overpress mine as a teen. i think pamela is going back to the days when our mom's use to gently comb our hair and oil our scalp while we sat between their legs. now...i go easy on the relaxers and the braids...i have been wearing a fake ponytail for 10 years or two braids squaw style and i wash my hair with creme of nature shampoo...i use a light oil
like ultra sheen, no heat and a regular alternative relaxer. brush hair with a soft brush. for color washout rinses only or i will use a light color hair piece...the results? MY HAir is down my back...let the fake hair take the abuse...want light colors? use extensions...that is what they are for to enhance and protect your fragile hair...the book is great...it does mention the light use of relaxers...relaxers are fine...moderation is the key...

4 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to read........1999-08-30

I enjoyed reading this book. I learned a lot about how to care for my hair and my daughter's hair. I was surprised to learn that many of the things that I was doing to our hair was unhealthy for our hair and prevented hair growth. After reading this book, I immediately threw out the shampoos that were wrong for our hair, stopped by a beauty supply store and purchased the right kinds of shampoos, contioners, and moisturizers.

The only reason I did not give this book five stars is because I believe that there was too much emphasis on braids. Braids aren't the only style of choice for wearers of natural hair. I would liked to have seen more photos of women wearing their natural hair NOT in braids.

4 out of 5 stars This book shows lovely variations of hairstyles........1999-01-10

I was very impressed with the variety of hairstyles shown. The comments by the authors concerning black hair where very uplifting and expressed the beauty of black hair that has been overlooked and ignored in our society. I did think that the book could hav included more instruction as to how to create these lovely works of art, but all in all I found the book inspiring.

3 out of 5 stars OK if you know nothing of black hair (and like extensions).......1998-11-20

I thought this would be a good companion to another book I purchased through amazon (No Lye by Tulani Kinard). But I was a little disappointed. It gave a history on hair, and why one should consider going natural. It also covered the negative feelings many blacks have towards their own features and hair due to racism and the after-effects of slavery. It rang true, but not every person who occasionally puts in green or gray eye contacts suffers from the racial self-hatred. It almost seemed like a salon photo book. It had a lot of extension how-to pictures, but just plain natural hair was what I thought would be showcased. It gave only one page of information about locks and their care. Overall this book would be good for someone who knows nothing at all about their african hair.

The book offers lots of braided and 2-strand twist styles and how-to's for black women who want to wear the natural texture of their hair, especially those who are sick of chemically and heat-frying their hair. The styles vary from formal to every day wear, and many are suitable for the office. I'm already wearing one of the twist styles to work (I'm a full-time corporate internal auditor), and my 9-yr old daughter is wearing one of the cornrowed styles. The only thing that made me rate the book a 9 instead of 10 is that too many of the styles feature extensions--the book said they were needed to add length or fullness to the models' hair. Both my and my daughter's hair is really tightly curled, but our styles were done without extensions. My daugther's hair reaches the middle of her back, so it is as long and full as the model's extended hair in the picture we followed. Perhaps Ms. Ferrell couldn't find any black women who hadn't chemically- or heat-fried their hair off. There are a few of us out here who haven't! Although I must admit I'm saddened when I see my female relatives and friends continuously make the trek to the salon to chemically relax their hair; yet they always marvel at the length and thickness of my and my daughter's hair. About 2 years ago I quit relaxing my hair and went to texturizing (I never relax my daughters, just occasionally hot comb). Then in March of this year I learned from the "For Colored Girls..." books that texturizing is just as bad--so I stopped that. Although both our hairdo's were sometimes fuzzy and rough-looking, I held my ground (and believe me I've had to fend off bad-hair comments). I began perusing bookstores and surfing the net--hoping to find help on how to style natural hair in other than an afro. I live in Omaha which has a small black population, so I figured the chance of finding any viable solution was pretty grim. I finally found Ms. Ferrell's book one day on the net. And I am so grateful!! Thanks!! Just one more thing--if Ms. Ferrell wants models that don't need hair extensions, just get in touch with me. Bye!

                            Book Description

Armin Landeck, an American realist whose graphic career spanned more than half of the twentieth century, was trained as an architect but devoted his life to etching, creating his first print in 1927.

A brief period of study under Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in New York City introduced Landeck to copper engraving, establishing his subsequent fascination with the burin and all it can do. For the rest of the l940s Landeck often used both drypoint and engraving on the same plate, but after 1950 he produced only copper engravings with the exception of three wood engravings in 1958.

This revised edition of a book first published in 1977 has been completely rewritten and expanded to include prints not known when the first edition was published—plus the prints made by the artist from 1977 till his death in 1984. The first edition contained 127 prints and states; 164 prints and states are now pictured and described.

An important addition to this book outlines Landeck’s participation in many national print exhibitions such as those at the Library of Congress and the Society of American Etchers. Reflecting the growing appreciation of Landeck’s work, the list of public institutions that have Landeck prints in their permanent collections has grown from the first edition’s thirty-one to this edition’s ninety-six. A new section entitled "Notes on the Prints" gives in-depth information on many Landeck prints. An extensive bibliography is another feature of this second edition.
