Enticing, though it does call for suspended reality.......2007-03-16
Enticing, with interesting twists that kept me avidly reading and guessing up to the end. But I don't give it more than three stars because I agree with other reviewers that you have to suspend reality a lot to read this book. The investigating police officer and even Chris's husband were violating law enforcement ethics and possibly jeopardizing the case when it comes to trial by allowing Chris access to crime scenes and sharing case information with her. Also I thought Chris lowered her own ethical and moral standards in this book by withholding information because the daughter asked her to do so. And why was Chris so gullible that she would travel all over the country with someone that she barely knew? The basic premise of these Chris Bennett Brooks stories is getting worn out - she isn't the ex-nun, housewife/mother, and part-time teacher any longer. She's really now a private investigator, so why not remake her into that role?
The Christine Bennett Mysteries.......2005-10-08
This review is not specific to this book, but to the entire series. If you read the books in order of publication, you can't help but get caught up in the personal life of Christine Bennett. You have to admire her ability to reason out things that happened in the past to solve her mysteries. As someone who attended Catholic schools my whole life, I really relate to her relationship with Sr. Joseph. I wish Lee Harris would write faster so that I could read more of her books.
Still a great series..........2005-09-15
I've been following this series since "The Good Friday Murders" and while this latest book is not as good as some of the earlier books it's far from a bad book. There's no way the reader could guess "who did it" based on the clues given early on but everything came together in the end. The one criticism i do have is it would have been nicer if Sr. Joseph played a bigger role in the story. Next to Chris she's my favorite charater.
Series has crashed and burned.......2005-09-13
When you need to suspend belief beyond any reason in order to read a book, you know you're in trouble. And that's what this series has become...a suspension of belief.
Not only do the police encourage the civilian Chris to solve their cases, but they enable her by providing her with all their information. Even her husband, a NYC cop, encourages and assists her. They let her enter crime scenes with them, they give her names and addresses of witnesses so she can interview them, they allow her access to all their evidence, they inform her when new information comes in. Her husband supports her as she withholds information and evidence from the police, and as she leaves her five-year-old son behind to fly around the country chasing clues. Even the victim's daughter gets in on the act, refusing to talk to the cops, but telling her story to and teaming up with a complete stranger with no ties to law enforcement or her family, who was called in by her parents' landlord simply because she stopped by to ask him questions about them a few days earlier. And of course we get our dose of Sister Joseph with her cryptic clues, which always enable Chris to suddenly come up with the solution to the crime.
Having Chris be a housewife/mother/teacher no longer works. If she's going to continue to be involved in cases, then the author should make her a PI or send her to the police academy. You have to suspend so much belief where her involvement is concerned that it ends up taking away too much to make the stories enjoyable.
The author has a gold mine on her hands with her new Manhattan series, so perhaps it's time to let Chris and Jack ride off into the sunset and concentrate her efforts on Jane Bauer.

One of the best incomplete series I've ever read.......1999-05-13
I picked this book up in a used bookstore I used to frequent (the only reason I don't is because I don't live in that town anymore) I was already familiar with Ms. Green's work, and decided to read it. I'm glad I did. Set in the same universe as her Hidden Realms/Silver Princess series (the main character is even mentioned in one of the books) it follows the powerful sorceress as she tries to save her wizard foster mother, with the help of some very powerful friends. This is the second book in a trilogy, unfortunately, the series is unfinished. The third book has never been published, an maybe never will. Though Ms. Green has told me that she is willing to write it, since the previous books have been allowed to go out of print, it seems unlikely.

I love this book I am 21 and i was slightly over weight, I had migranes, and i was starting to get acne (i know at 21 how sad) this has now ended beecause of my fasts. I am not saying that this will happen to you but a juice fast will make you stronger and have more energy. If you need to detox or anything this book gives you step by step instructions about how to do the fast and break it. The only thing that this book does not have is actual juice Recipes i would get the juice man's book for that.
The Best Juice Fasting Resource Available!.......2006-02-22
I know from personal experience, after following word for word Dr. Airola's Juice Fasting advice, what kind of perfect health can be attained. I even had a rigorous medical screening afterwards(to qualify for a certain job) that proved I was in optimal health. Where before I was 100 pounds overweight had thyroid disease and no energy, what-so-ever. My thyroid disease was gone, my energy and vitality through the roof and my doctor told me I had the best Triglycerides he'd ever seen.
Don't jump into Juice Fasting until you read this book. I own many Juice Fasting books, and this one is by far, the best. :)
This book can save your life........2002-12-12
I first read this book in 1979. At that time, in my late 20's, I was more than 50 lbs. overweight, had periodic severe asthma, increasing frequency of severe colds and flu, and was suffering from depression. My first juice fast was 30 days. It is not possible to describe in writing the positive changes that took place in every aspect of my life, physically, mentally and spiritually. I have done extended fasts (1 - 4 wks), many times since then. Dr. Airola's advice is not "dated," as some readers suggest. It is "classic" and "timeless," because fasting is literally the oldest known health practice in recorded history. Jesus Christ both practiced and recommended fasting to his followers as the ultimate spiritual and physical cure. (Recall, that prior to beginning his ministry, he went into the wilderness for 40 days to fast and pray.) Oddly, most animals have much better instincts than "modern" man - when they are sick or injured, they refuse to eat in order to conserve internal energy in order to allow healing.
One other thing is very obvious from reading the few negative reviews of this book - in every case, these are people who did not have either the desire or the will to put it to the test. It is much easier to criticize something you know nothing about. Common sense should tell us that drugs and surgery are not the answer to problems created by a modern lifestyle which has brought upon us many "civilized" diseases - cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, mental disorders, schizophrenia - to name just a few. There are few books that literally have the power to save a person's life, but, this is truly one of them.
Merits of the book and the author's writing style.......2002-10-03
Written in the 1960's, this book discusses juice fasting as a way of maintaining health, detoxifying the body and losing weight. Clearly, juice fasting has been around for a long while, so it is not a fad. It is so much more than that!
This book provides numerous anecdotal examples from the mid-1900's of people who have recovered from various illnesses and obesity while fasting on juice. It gives some guidelines or "to-dos" for juice fasting and different methods and settings for doing a fast. It discusses the vital importance of exercise and rest. It does not incorporate nutritional information, scientific breakthroughs or medical insights from the past three decades. It does not give a lot of detail about potential risks of fasting for different people. The reader will need to balance the directives of the book with current health information and her knowledge of her own body.
The book is rather short. As the title indicates, it is a guide for fasting. It is not a guide for healthy eating when not fasting. There is some information in there about that, but if more nutritional detail is desired, the reader will have to look elsewhere.
The author's writing style is very enthusiastic and easy to read. It is clear that he had a passion for the subject matter and believed in the power of juice fasting.
After reading this book, "how to keep SLIM with juice fasting" was extremely clear to me. Not eating = weight loss. "How to stay young" and "how to stay healthy" with juice fasting were not as clear to me, and I looked to other, more recently written and up to date books for further guidance.
Feeling Real Good.......2002-09-28
Thanks to Dr.Airola's book I feel real good. I am a mother of 5 in my forty's and I just got heavier and heavier every year,and growing out of size 18. This year at work we had a wellness challenge. I entered with my team and decided I would follow the guidelines in this book. I have been on the fast for almost three weeks now and have dropped 20 lbs and two dress sizes. I walk everyday on my breaks and lunch in the gym at work. I don't even care if I win the challenge because I feel great! I cut my hair and colored the gray and am getting compliments everyday. I plan to do a four week fast, but please, newcomers, be careful, I have fasted before, but never this long.Remember to break your fast very carefully or you'll ruin the whole thing!

this is a book for people who traveled and know how those foods look like. Once this done , it is a good and very complete book full of interesting tips and recipes simple to be done, that take you back to those places. And if you don't want to cook just use it as a travel journal and enjoy your rememberings.
Can't be beat!.......2006-08-05
I attended a cooking class in San Antonio with the author, and received the book with the class. Perfect combination of stories, photos and recipes. The recipes she has selected (how did she ever decide!) are well-written, and easily accomplished without spending a fortune on specialty ingredients or investing hours of time (unlike a Paula Wolfert cookbook, which leaves me feeling defeated before I have begun).

Do NOT buy a dog from this woman, or support her book!.......2007-09-16
I bought a puppy from this woman in 2002, and she gave me a free signed copy of this book. My dog has mange and two luxating patellas. I wrote her to warn her of the genetic problems with her breeding stock, and to tell her that otherwise I adore my dog. What I got back from her were angry, ignorant replies where she accuses me of trying to get a free dog from her. I told her that a "free" dog from her would definatly not be "free". Please do not support this woman, and by all means, do NOT buy a dog from her! If you'd like to see the email transcript- see my puppy's blog at Myspace-- user name is weasagail . For what it is worth, her book has nice pictures of rat terriers, but thats about it (as other reviewers have described much better). At the time I received it, it was literally the ONLY rat terrier book out there, and therefore it was the best. But the day a second book became available, this one became worthless.
Poor English, Poor Info, Poor Dogs.......2004-04-21
While this was admittedly a first attempt at defining a diverse breed, the effort expended doesn't warrant the price required, NOR does it do the breed ANY justice.
The information is general at best, misleading or just plain wrong at worst - for better general info of canines check out The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skeete. The grammar and organization is non-existant and does more to confuse than clarify. The majority of the pictures do not represent the look of the breed and it will require a much more in depth investigation to dispell their misrepresentations - Anne Blair's Ratter Chatter would give potential Rat Terrier owners a much more accurate, specific overall view of the breed, even though it is aimed at people who are already owned by Rat Terriers.
Save your money!!! Flip through Linda Hibbard's book in the bookstore an example of what Rat Terriers shouldn't look like, and then buy ANY other dog book for general dog info. OR contact a local breeder, rescue, dog club - you'll get a much better idea of the strengths and weaknesses of this wonderful breed, PLUS you will be able to see what a Rat Terrier SHOULD look like.
Good Basic Rat Terrier Book.......2004-03-23
I have read this book as well as many, many others on different breeds of dogs. This book does a good job of giving the basic information and has some lovely photos. It is a good, inexpensive book for those looking to research the breed or as a precursor to buying a Rat Terrier pup.
There are few breed books written on the Rat Terrier and I have to say that I enjoy this one. I also have Ratter Chatter, which is a different type of book entirely. I have to recommend the Hibbard book as well as the Ratter Chatter (by Blair) book as they are both wonderful if you are into the breed.
As a general rule, most dog breed books contain puppy information which could apply to basically any breed of dog. I would not discount this book's credibility because it contains information on raising a pup that applies to all breeds. I also have to agree with one reviewer in the fact that some of the information was duplicated in different parts of the book. I discovered that as well, however, I choose to believe that the author felt it may have been prudent to revisit that information maybe worded slightly differently in more than one section.
I do recommend this book for all Rat Terrier enthusiasts. Don't limit yourself to reading just this one book though. There is limited information on this breed so read as many books as you can on the subject.
Authors, please disregard the ignorant reviews.......2004-01-14
Being an English major, the authors depicted the book and pure bred excellently. Their English was great and the pictures were excellent. Apparently this was the authors first attempt at a book and their only intention was to put a book out on this rare breed.
We did not need the ignorant Southerners remarks about a rescue shelter. This book gives facts and does not encourage anything about going to a breeder. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.
Too Generic.......2003-08-31
As many have said, this book is just too generic. Beyond that, I must take issue with the comments by "A reader from colorado" above. Millions of dogs die in shelters each year because breeders massively overproduce puppies to conform to some artificial human standard of beauty. Who the #)(@*$*( cares?! It's personality that counts. If you want a Rat Terrier or any dog-- do not go to a breeder but visit your local shelter or an on-line resource such as Petfinder.org. Breeding dogs should be criminal until every single unwanted canine has been placed in a permanent loving home. I have a rescue RT, and she is a fantastic girl. She had in fact been dumped by a breeder at animal control after she stopped "producing". Disgusting!

Pioneering African American journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) is widely remembered for her courageous antilynching crusade in the 1890s; the full range of her struggles against injustice is not as well known. With this book, Patricia Schechter restores Wells-Barnett to her central, if embattled, place in the early reform movements for civil rights, women's suffrage, and Progressivism in the United States and abroad. Schechter's comprehensive treatment makes vivid the scope of Wells-Barnett's contributions and examines why the political philosophy and leadership of this extraordinary activist eventually became marginalized.
Though forced into the shadow of black male leaders such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington and misunderstood and then ignored by white women reformers such as Frances E. Willard and Jane Addams, Wells-Barnett nevertheless successfully enacted a religiously inspired, female-centered, and intensely political vision of social betterment and empowerment for African American communities throughout her adult years. By analyzing her ideas and activism in fresh sharpness and detail, Schechter exposes the promise and limits of social change by and for black women during an especially violent yet hopeful era in U.S. history.

One Brave Black Woman's Struggle to be Heard.......2007-09-21
The end of the Civil War in 1865 marked a new beginning for freed slaves but merely having won their freedom did not guarantee their acceptance as equals by white society. In fact, southern whites almost immediately began a campaign to resubjugate blacks using every means at their disposal including lynching. While whites held out lynchings to be punishment for rapes of white women, they were in reality acts of terror by white mobs in the effort to reestablish white majority rule. Of those few who spoke out against these predations, one of the most effective was Ida B. Wells-Barnett. Patricia A. Schechter shows how Wells-Barnett, born a slave, became one of the best-known authorities on black lynchings and then a well-known activist and social reformer despite being a black woman with little financial support. And in doing so, she shows how Wells-Barnett worked within the restrictions of race and gender. While not a biography, Schechter includes sufficient details of Wells-Barnett's life to help understand her activist role in fighting lynching, working to help disadvantaged blacks, and win voting rights for women.
Wells-Barnett's journey to Memphis after her parents died was an effort to keep her siblings with her as a family. She worked as a teacher to provide an income but she used her ingenuity to bring in extra monies such as by organizing a dramatic club and putting on shows. But as she was intelligent, well-read, and hard-working she quickly understood that writing and public life were the best avenues for her, as a black woman, to better herself and further her goal of social change. She developed a sarcastic, mocking sense of humor which she employed in her ofttimes scathing and provocative articles and pamphlets which helped draw attention to controversial subjects. She bolstered her points of view by supplying statistics such as in her paper, Southern Horrors, showing that less than 30% of lynchings of black men involved the charge of rape vice the almost 100% claimed by whites.
As she was unmarried, she took great pains to ensure that her personal reputation was unsullied. She could not rely on male relatives to defend her honor so in addition to using her own rhetorical and writing skills, she sought the help of male friends. Having no husband to speak for her in a society which diminished the worth of an unmarried, black woman made her life difficult. As a black person, she demonstrated her concern with her physical safety as she sometimes carried a pistol and advocated armed resistance to defend against white predations. As part owner of a newspaper, she did not self censor her articles. In one she wrote just before she fled Memphis for New York, she asserted that black men who were lynched did not assault white women but rather were participating in liaisons. For this, her paper's office was attacked.
She became an effective and charismatic public speaker in the U.S. and then in England as she purposefully eschewed an emotionalist and demonstrative type of presentation but rather adopted a restrained and dignified manner. Her informal training as an actress helped her in her speaking engagements, and her ability to speak through tears added a dramatic touch to some speeches. She always had to remain cognizant of the fact that she was stepping away from the traditional role of a married black woman into a role of a black spokesman so had to ensure that she maintained her dignity and composure.
After she married in 1895, she continued her efforts in her new home of Chicago albeit her literary efforts after 1900 never equaled earlier ones. And male dominance of black civil right efforts intensified after WWI marginalizing her influence in antilynching efforts nationwide. Black men's and women's roles became different in the first two decades of the 19th century: "there emerged at the elite level a gender division of labor, which assigned political and intellectual leadership to men awhile entrusting to women a parallel role of prayer, education, and fundraising in female networks" (168). Her radicalism and uncompromising attitude further marginalized her as many male black leaders sought compromise and conciliation with whites versus confrontation while others urged blacks merely to uplift themselves. She "voted with her feet" when a church or organization pursued paths with which she disagreed. Also, while she helped found the NAACP, she withdrew her support as her activism was not appreciated as part of its progressive agenda. Wells-Barnett was marginalized as a militant leader and reverted to local or state venues for most of her work. She became very active in Chicago social and welfare groups to help poorer blacks emulating renewed black women's roles as wife and mother. Her participation in black women's suffrage was especially noteworthy even while her own political campaign failed. Her almost religious fervor to recruit all blacks to vote was one of her primary ways to fight white racism and terror. Clearly, Wells-Barnett did not willingly accept second class status to whites or to black men but her ofttimes confrontational approach, and uncompromising and provocative attitude, made her unpopular to some black men and organizations thereby diminishing her effectiveness.
Schechter presents a thorough study of this important early civil rights figure emphasizing how Wells-Barnett's race and gender influenced and constrained her efforts. Written for an academic audience knowledgeable about black activism during this era, she succeeds in dissecting Wells-Barnett's successes and failures relating them to her color and gender. Schechter could perhaps have been more successful had she presented additional biographical details to better understand Wells-Barnett motivations and as a person not just as a black activist. But anyone interested in how black women responded to both white racism and gender discrimination during this time will find much value in this book.
