Book Description
When Roman junior senator Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger has a chance to join a diplomatic mission to Alexandria, he welcomes the opportunity to temporarily elude his enemies in the Eternal City-even though it means leaving his beloved Rome. Decius is just beginning to enjoy the outpost's many exotic pleasures when the suspicious death of an irascible philosopher occurs, coinciding with the puzzling and apocalyptic ravings of a charismatic cult leader. Intrigued, Decius requests and is given permission by the Egyptian Pharaoh to investigate the heinous crime. What he discovers is beyond shocking. And when the corpse of a famous courtesan mysteriously turns up in his bed, Decius suddenly finds himself entangled in a web of conspiracy far more widespread and dangerous than he ever imagined-one that threatens to bring about the downfall of the entire Empire.

Death on the Nile.......2004-08-01
As an avid reader of ancient history, historical fiction, and mystery novels, I was pleased to stumble upon the SPQR series, which combines all three. No historical fiction I have ever read brings Republican Rome to life better than SPQR. The mysteries through the first four books haven't been all that mystical, but the excitement moves the stories along quite well.
Decius Metellus the Younger is a minor Roman Senator who serves in a series of menial government jobs and finds murder, mayhem, and mystery everywhere he goes. Each of the first three books of the series has ended with Decius fleeing Rome to escape the homicidal fury of those he has angered.
This story is different in that it takes place during one of Decius' many enforced absences from Rome. He goes to Egypt with a diplomatic mission headed by his uncle, Metellus Creticus. The book reads somewhat like a 'Lonely Planet' guidebook as Decius explores the city of Alexandria, visiting the Jewish Quarter, the Palace of the Ptolemies, the Pharos lighthouse, the Library, and many other long forgotten landmarks including the Temple of the Muses.
Decius encounters murder in the Temple, and being offended that so vile a crime could occur in so holy a place, he sets out to solve the murder and avenge the Muses. He manages to get on the wrong side of almost everyone he comes in contact with, evades a number of attempts on his own life, and uncovers a plot to overthrow the Roman influence in Egypt. When he wakes up one morning with a hangover and a murdered courtesan in his bed, things really get complicated. Not only does he get himself arrested for murder, he has a very hard time explaining things to his fiance. Not surprisingly, the story ends with the murder solved, the plot foiled, and Decius leaving the city in a very undignified manner.
Amusing Detective Yarn.......2002-09-24
Decius Caecilius Metellus is the star of another series of detective fiction set in era of the Roman Republic. Like Lindsey Davis' Marcus Didius Falco series, it features a wise-guy sleuth who thankfully has the good grace not to think too highly of himself. Above all, Decius is human and is not above enjoying a good bout of drinking or a night of carousing in the one of the city's less reputable quarters. Told in the first person, his comments are snide, meant to amuse and soften the historical aspect of the novel by bringing it into the more modern perspective of current sensibilites regarding universal issues like cult religions, proper behavior or the octopus of the political bureaucracy.
In this particular offering, the historical phase of the story is particularly entertaining as it enlightens the reader with regard to the lost city of Alexandria. Decius is part of an envoy to the city of Alexandria, so we are privy to his first hand encounter of a city built on a grid, newer and so different from Rome. As Decius tours, so do we. We visit some of the wonders of the ancient world: the fabled great Library, the temple of the Muses (Museum) and the great Pharos lighthouse. Amidst this backdrop, Decius entertains with his impressions of the alien Hellenic Egyptians (Berenice, Cleopatra and Ptolemy) and the strange barbarian cults which are housed in foreign temples along Alexandia's wide thoroughfares. We are enlightened as to his thoughts of the more prominent Romans of his day: Julius Caesar, Crassius, Sulla and their progeny,Sulla's daughter. Fausta and Decius' fiance, Julia Minor, daughter of Lucius Caesar. When a mathematician from Chios is murdered, Decius plods about like a toga clad Sherlock Holmes--infuriating most of the dignitaries he interviews for the sake of determining the truth. When another murder occurs and the body is found naked beside Decius in his own bed, it becomes brutally clear that Decius has stumbled upon a much more insidious political plot not meant to eliminate one or two unlucky people, but to undermine Rome's entire influence over Egypt.
I read this book without the benefit of reading the first three SPQR novels, so I am ill-equipped to discuss the author's development of his main character and the substories which involve his lesser players. I can only say that the book was enjoyable as a stand-alone and could only get better with the anticipated knowledge reading the other stories would provide.
Best of the series to date.......2002-05-11
SPQR IV is JMR's best offering of Decius Metellus the Younger. Having so often referred to circumstance or snooping imposed periods of exile we finally get to see how well Decuis travels.
And the result is as well as Todd's Claudia Seferius and better than Davis' Didius Falco.
This installment finds our erstwhile hero appearing as a Roman diplomat at Alexandria, in the Eyptian province. Ably supported by his slave Hermes and the great physician character, Asklepodies he is quickly joined by his now-confirmed betrothed Julia Minor and the female half of Sulla's twin children, Fausta.
As Decius and Julia wrly note towards the end, Decius gets tangled in a web of murder simply because it is, as Ptolemy the Flute-Player notes, his hobby. The murder, mayhem and rioting that he brings as part of his investigatory technique disrputs an entire city to the point that his denouement and great service to the Roman state is swiftly followed by him being tossed on the nearest ship to Rhodes. Never mind.
No venture into Alexandria can occur without philosophical ramblings (Decius' dry comments on the death of Archimedes to Antigones is extremely humorous) and they abound here in plenty, beginning with the death of the mathematician turned secret mechanics-dabbler Iphicrates.
The only thing that slightly disappoints and echoes the previous novel, is that the 'uncovering' is always lame. In this case the three culprits get together, write everything down and neatly recount everything they've done to the listening Decius. These people deserve to be caught if that's the case. You get the feeling JMR hadn't quite yet mastered the art of the murder mystery denouement in the same vein as that master of such - Agatha Christie.
Nevertheless, aside from a poor murder mystery ending, the rest of the tale is extremely good and the dry sardonic innocence of Decius 'snooping' is now firmly established making this tale very humorous.
Buy it.
Entertaining departure.......2001-10-04
Decius Caecilius Metellus has an odd penchant for using curiosity and logic to deduce grand political intrigues threatening the ancient Roman Republic. Decius's optimistic cynicism and amusing asides make for lively reading, but outrage the stolid Roman virtues of dignitas and gravitas expected of young Senators like him. Since Decius rarely succeeds in actually doing something against the powerful villains like Crassus, Pompey, or Caesar at the heart of this series (but not this interlude), he frequently finds it necessary to leave town. In this episode of his saga, the noble Roman family Caecilius Metellus is up to its ears in trouble again, but in Egypt rather than its usual Roman haunts. Decius is a minor functionary in the Roman embassy situated in the remarkable town of Alexandria, where he is soon nosing after murder in the famous Library, snooping on a new religious cult, questing after dreadful new engines of war, and attempting to save beautiful Egyptian princesses and even the puppet ruler Ptolemy. We also get a glimpse of the 10-year-old Cleopatra before she was quite able to snare her first Roman. Once again the plot spirals into politically catastrophic events--will Decius save the Roman-Egyptian alliance?--even though the events seem loosely plotted and made up, even fantastical, rather than more tightly historic as elsewhere in the series or in the tales of Steven Saylor. I find Decius quite a likeable character; I'm glad the series continues.
There's a didactic subtext to these stories: pay attention and we can learn much about the organization of Roman society and politics, its economic basis and strategic considerations (especially re Egypt in this book), and the origin of modern terms like politics or Muse-um. Roberts does a great job of fusing geography and story here: the exotic city of classical Alexandria and its many extraordinary buildings--not just the Lighthouse or the Library--are ably evoked, and their forms play several crucial roles in the story. Unfortunately, the map and glossary of the city of Rome that again appear in this volume are quite off the mark, helping not at all with the descriptions of Alexandria and the Egyptian mystery religions that are so prominent in the text. The editor also allows Roberts to indicate that this book 4 takes place before book 3, is that right?
great historical novel.......2000-07-07
How wonderful that this book has finally reappeared in English! I've had to read volumes 4-8 of the SPQR series in German translation (they seem to be very popular in Germany). It's in The Temple of the Muses (vol. 4 of the series) that the hero, Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger, really starts showing his development as a character. In the first volumes, he's a brawling, rather juvenilely endearing figure. Here, however, he grows up. From this volume on, he starts showing the basic quandary of a decent, patriotic Roman in the final years of the Republic. Not only is the story good, the historical background is well done, completely convincing (and accurate where I've checked) without rubbing the history side in the reader's face too much.

Amazing story.......2003-06-30
I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book since I always see Elaine Bergstrom as a horror/vampire writer, but I should have known anything with her name attached to it would be wonderful. It was amazing how quickly the story drew me in and I couldn't put the book down. The authors research is wonderful and the story with keep your attention. For anyone who hasn't read Bergstrom's vampire stories because it's just not their cup of tea, this book may make you change your mind.
Cool Story.......2001-08-25
Very Cool Story. Lots of fun , I think anyone who likes time travel story's will be happy with this book. It isn't exact about the time line of one of the char's , but it is very well told (i'm not to big on Mr. Crowley history anyway). Expext a good story and alot of thinking (about what you would do)when you get this one , I expect a movie from it..
JUST OK.......2000-11-07
The time travel aspects of the book enticed me to buy it but I was disappointed. I found myself skipping pages to get to the end. The characters were decidedly unlikable and unsympathetic. The plot was thin and you never really discovered what was going on and why.
Save your money.......2000-09-08
Silly plot, cheesily written, with proofreading errors galore! The noncontemporary characters were strong but so what?
couldn't put it down!.......2000-08-01
This book is unlike any other book I have ever read! It tells the story of a woman, who inherits her great grandmother's appartment, and finds out there is a door in there which leads 72 years into the past. Contrary to other time travel books, the travel itself isn't what the book focuses on - the "technical" aspects of time travel. Neither does it focus on historial facts (like other time travel books). Instead, it focuses on some historical figures, such as the famous Aleister Crowley, and on magick ("real" magic). Overall, this is a fantasy novel, with a lot of romance in it, but written in a very unique manner. I simply could not put it down! I recommend it to anyone who has an interest (or at least, isn't upset) by reading about magical rituals, likes time travel books - and has a romantic heart ;-)

One in ten Americans suffers from thyroid dysfunction, yet most don't realize the mental and emotional components of this condition. "This is the first book to explain the hidden suffering that many patients have difficulty expressing and the first book to provide new ways of helping address and heal this suffering," promises author Ridha Arem, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Ben Taub General Hospital, both in Houston, Texas. This book explains the link between stress and thyroid imbalance; how thyroid imbalance affects your emotions, sex life, and relationships; and how to cope with the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarily strike women, a whole section deals with women's health issues, such as infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical tools, such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealing with treatment problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapses and depression. The book covers lifestyle choices that affect thyroid health, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise. Frequent case studies (usually told as first-person narratives), checklists, and questionnaires help to simplify the material and make it easier to check the medical information against your own situation. Each chapter ends with "valuable points to remember," making review easy. If you suffer from thyroid imbalance, or think you might, this book could be a valuable resource. --Joan Price
Book Description
It's sometimes called a hidden epidemic: One in ten Americans--more than twenty million people, most of them women--has a thyroid disorder. At any given time, millions of people have an undiagnosed thyroid disorder and experience a chronic mental anguish that almost certainly arises from the very same source. Yet many primary-care doctors still don't recognize the importance of the thyroid in mind-body health--and its especially crucial role in women's well-being.
The Thyroid Solution is a must-read for anyone who suffers from a thyroid condition. It's the first mind-body approach to identifying and curing thyroid imbalances. Written by a medical pioneer and leading authority in the field of thyroid research, this groundbreaking book offers Dr. Ridha Arem's practical program for maintaining thyroid health through diet, exercise, and stress control--and through his revolutionary medical plan, which combines two types of hormone treatments with astounding results. Inside you'll discover
- The thyroid basics--what it is, where it is, what it does
- How thyroid hormones affect the brain and alter mood, emotions, and behavior
leading to brain fog, weight gain, loss of libido, infertility, anxiety, and depression
- What tests to ask your doctor to give you--and what they mean
- The vital connection between stress and thyroid imbalance
- The benefits of antioxidants and essential fatty-acid foods and supplements
- How to recognize and cure the deep and lingering effects of a thyroid imbalance
Filled with remarkable patient histories and interviews that document the dramatic results of Dr. Arem's bold new treatments, The Thyroid Solution now gives you and your doctor the tools you need to live a life with peace of
mind . . . and body.

Very helpful.......2007-08-23
I have hypothyroid and have found this book to be a helpful resource to which I refer frequently.
This should be one of your reference books if you have thyroid disease.......2007-05-16
This book is really a great source of introductory information on Thyroid function, disorders, treatments, and risks and failures of some treatments. I would also recommend Elaine Moore's books on this subject, but this would be a good first read. It will prepare you for her more advanced introduction of information. One of the highlights of this book was the constant sharing of personal experience stories that you will definitely find useful. The frustration of not being diagnosed until the symptoms kick your physician in the knee is lessened somewhat when you read of all the other people who've had similar frustrating experiences. This book will also arm you with an understanding that will help you spot disorders in your friends and family, quite possibly sparing them the long term of frustation and confusion.
I would be the first to suggest that endocrinologists and doctors in general will not spend the time to help you find out the cause of your thyroid disorder. For instance, is it bad or is it under an autoimmune attack? If the latter is the case, killing the thyroid alone will not address the autoimmune attack on other organs in your body. You really want to know how to intelligently ask your doctor questions like, "What happens to the parathyroids when you irradiate my thyroid?" "Can you guarantee I will not know the difference between what my thyroid used to produce and what some synthetic drug will do on my mind and body?" etc.
I'm not saying that Radioactive Iodine is terrible or in some situations, it may even be the best solution-- it is just not the only solution to these illnesses and for some reason, in the USA, RAI is the first option they always discuss using. Once Radiated, your thyroid is gone forever.
If you want to understand your illness so you can be your own advocate, this book is a great fist step. It is also quite inexpensive, compared to most special interest books on this topic. Scotty/Sioux City
The secret of the "Thyroid solution" is T3.......2007-03-13
This is the most comprehensive book about thyroid diseases on the market. Hypo and hyperthyroidism and their treatments are covered in great details. The author pays particular attention to the mental aspects of these illnesses.
Arem Ridha is way ahead of his colleagues in his recognition of T3 as a crucial ingredient in hormone replacement. 20% of the thyroid made by a healthy thyroid gland is T3. Yet when it comes to thyroid hormone replacement T3 is not prescribed by most doctors. If you've been on Synthroid and not feeling well, talk to your doctor about either adding the missing T3 or using the natural thyroid that contains T3 and T4 in one pill. There's a reason why the T3 containing preparations work better. I admire the authors admittance of not being able to treat patients despite the normal blood tests and his willingness to search for the solution for his patients. T3 is the secret ingredient of the "Thyroid Solution" described in this book.
The only shortcomings are limited coverage of Hashimoto and adrenal insufficiency (which often goes hand in hand with the thyroid disease). The thyroid resistance (Hypothyroidism Type II) isn't covered either. The author seems to be on the fence with the TSH. Some parts of the book question whether TSH is the golden standard and whether its wide 'normal' range can be trusted; other parts of the book advise to go by TSH. Will see where the author stands with his next edition.
All in all, this is a wonderful and much needed book!
This book contains far more thyroid hormone information than most physicians know........2007-02-05
The Thyroid Solution is the best single book I have read discussing thyroid hormone replacement. Dr. Arem Ridha provides a thorough explanation of the various thyroid hormone tests, including T4, T3, TRH, TSH, TPO, Antithyroglobulin, Antimicrosomal Antibody and TSab. Numerous case histories make the book more readable and understandable.
I was very impressed with the discussion of pins and needles pain and carpal tunnel syndrome correlations with hypothyroidism.
I especially enjoyed his discussion of the historical impact of hypothyroidism, upon Napoleon, Boris Yeltsin and the Bush family.
This book contains far more thyroid hormone information than most physicians know. This is a controversial statement, but it is based upon listening to the stories of many patients, testing them and observing them rapidly improve, after they received effective thyroid hormone replacement. Sadly, one of our fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue patients reported a seven year quest, involving 36 different health care providers, who finally treated her with thyroxine. Although she finally received a hypothyroidism diagnosis, she only had energy for two hours after awakening, before needing to return to bed. After Florida Detox correctly treated her with T3, Cytomel, she had energy for 12 hours daily.
Another patient reported he had to consult five health care providers, before finding one who would prescribe desiccated Armour Thyroid extract for his aging mother. He thanked me profusely, explaining her depression and brain fog lifted 48 hours, after receiving a mixture of T4 and T3 thyroid hormone. He reported she began feeding herself and smiling again.
Almost without exception, our Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients regain energy for eight to twelve hours daily, when treated with liothyronine, T3.
If you are weary of physician after physician telling you your hypothyroid symptoms are "all in your head" and you need to see a psychiatrist, read this book and find a physician willing to prescribe a trial of T3 thyroid hormone. ZRT Laboratory, in Beaverton, Oregon has a blood spot finger prick test available to the public, which can measure T3, T4 and TPO. If you can not convince your doctor to order thyroid testing, you can call ZRT Lab (866 600 1636)and ask them to send the test kit to you. Perhaps, when you have the actual test results, you can find a physician knowlegeable enough to prescribe the hormones you need.
Many patients are placed on antidepressant medications which accelerate weight gain and obliterate libido, when they actually need thyroid hormone. Many others are placed on expensive statins, to lower cholesterol, when thyroid hormone would work better, with fewer side effects and many additional benefits.
Undiagnosed and inadequately treated hypothyroidism is epidemic, in the United States and contributes heavily to our obesity epidemic and spiraling health care costs. Many environmental factors contribute to obesity, including pesticide, hormone and plastic residues, in addition to overuse of antibiotics. Polychlorinated Biphenyls can interfere with thyroid hormone receptors.
If you are attempting to avoid pharmaceuticals and other non natural treatments, please realize thyroid hormones are natural to our bodies.
You no longer live in a natural world, unless you grow your own food on an organic farm, in New Zealand, Switzerland or some other remote location. You are probably drinking chlorinated, fluorinated water or bottled water contaminated with bis phenol or other estrogenic plastic residues.

This is the essential book to have. I have made almost every recipe and they all turned out soooo good. Make sure you get a very good quality grill pan like All-Clad. Even the friends I have who did not cook before now can because of this book. One pan cooking was never better!
You know what I like in a cookbook? RECIPES........2006-02-01
This cookbook was something of a waste--glad I got it used. The used copy I got still had the Pottery Barn sticker on the back, which comes as no surprise--I don't think that the author of this book intended to have it actually serve as a guide to cooking with a grill pan. Rather, it's a glossy throwaway publication that would look great tucked in to a gift box along with a new grill pan.
This book is full of photos...and big chapter headers...and white space...but very few actual recipes. Also, there's nothing really "grill pan specific" about them; it's really more of a "barbeque substitute" sort of thing. Nor is it a guide to one-pot cooking with a grill pan, which is sort of what I was hoping for. I really don't see myself making much of what's listed in this cookbook; if I wanted to get a million other pots and pans dirty I wouldn't bother hauling out the grill pan.
Great book for anyone who really cooks.......2004-01-30
This is a great cookbook because of it's variety and simplicity. It has a wide range of receipes (appetizers and main dishes; seafood, vegetables, and meats) that are not overwhelmingly complex. Most require readily available ingredients. It's not overly basic, but simple enough to use everyday; unlike some cookbooks that are targeted to someone who can afford to be in the kitchen all day.
I you want something different for supper.......2003-12-29
This cookbook gives you some different ideas for supper. Alot of the recipes are healthy. If you like seafood, this book is for you.
JAMEE RUTH IS A STAR !!!.......2003-08-21
I met Jamee Ruth at a book signing in New York and she is amazing!! I bought both of her books, this one and MIX IT UP!, and have just ordered more for gifts. She is not only an incredible writer she is absolutely gorgeous! What an inspiration to see a chef and author that looks like a model straight out of Vogue. And so friendly you want to go to her house for dinner. Jamee said she is almost finished with another book-I can't wait!!! Her writing is so easy to follow, she really is an expert teacher. If you ever hear that she is doing a book signing go and see her-I wish she had her own show so I could see her and learn from her everyday!

I have been reseaching Jack Russell Terriers through many different sources. I found this book to be very accurate regarding information I have been able to gather, validating previously gathered information. The book also contains quite a bit of information about the different aspects of owning a Jack Russell (i.e. choosing, feeding, training, temperament, and breed standards). I am sure I will refer to this book often. It is easy to read with many pictures. I loved it.

It's only Basic but it's covers a lot.......2007-01-02
I like the book, it doesn't give a lot of information, just the basics which is what it is. The only thing I didn't like is that the "values" of the firearms aren't realistically real world prices, and that it doesn't differentiate between rearsenalled firearms and originals. But for what it does, it's simple and easy to use.

Standard Catalog of Military Firearms.......2004-01-21
There are still some errors and omissions in this edition and in many cases the history doesn't go back to 1870. The values quoted are also different for the same gun listed for different countries. The values are a couple of years old in some cases. The information on automatic weapons appears to be good. I hope this will become as good as his Standard Catalog of Firearms.

How many ways do I love this book.......2000-02-06
Although this book is at present out of print a friend managed to pick it up in England having borrowed mine. This truly is a superb cross-stitch resource. The alphabets are divided into various sections such as floral, antique, elegant, baby, kids etc. As with all The Better and Homes And Gardens imprint this is downright lavish in its use of colour and the size of charts. The alphabets are shown finished in myriad ways. It is all here, boxes, cushions, throws, towel borders, afgans and of course alphabet samplers. It is yet another book to make me wish to live and stitch for a thousand years. If I could only ever take one cross-stitch book to a desert island this with be a real contender.

Book Description
This lavishly illustrated, oversized (17" x 10") book brings together the last major print series of the celebrated Japanese artist Hokusai (1760-1849) and the Japanese poetry that inspired these beautiful prints.
Whether showing semi-nude women abalone divers struggling with their catch while a male crew of shriveled old salts leers from a nearby boat, or the carefree rapture of a leisurely group of men and women observing cherry blossoms at their peak, Hokusai captures, with drama and delicacy, sublime and ridiculous states. The artist's simplicity, though deceptive, is also remarkable: he illustrates a poem about a lovers' seaside tryst with a magnificently imposing yet unadorned sailing vessel, its small window offering a coy glimpse of the fortunate couple inside.
Each of the 111 color prints (as well as 41 black-and-white sketches of projected prints apparently never completed) is accompanied by the poem, in Japanese and English, a biographical note on the poet and by Peter Morse's comments on literary and artistic intention and execution.

Book Description
Through over 150 color and black and white photographs and an engaging, informed text, Black Beauty discusses the position of blacks within the beauty hierarchy of the West, as well as the kinds of work available to black models within the past century. Author Ben Arogundade also offers insight to the ways in which certain styles of black beauty have been promoted above others. In considering black icons and celebrities from Marcus Garvey, Josephine Baker, and Muhammad Ali to Billy Dee Williams, Grace Jones and Lauryn Hill, Black Beauty reveals the many differing images of those who have embodied black beauty in our culture. Portraits by Herb Ritts, Albert Watson, Richard Avedon, and other eminent photographers are included in this stunning compilation.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable, but caveat........2006-05-01
This book features some great photos. It offers the reader a good opportunity to revel in black folk/ culture/ expression. Also, it's an honorable attempt to address one of the intangible race issues that so impacts black folk and yet is under-addressed. Still...the author focuses too much, perhaps, on Western views of black beauty throughout history. In recounting the various stages of the Black reaction to cultural alienation and degradation of our physicality, he paints a picture of resiliency that is poignant and inspiring. But what's really needed in this area is proaction on our part, and less reaction. Toward that end, I would have liked to see more exploration, in Black Beauty, of the different concepts of beauty, in different cultures, throughout different periods in the human experience. In doing so, Arogundade would have better illuminated the subjective nature of beauty standards, thereby positing a sturdier framework in which to truly envision (and revel in) our own.
Black Beauty? I Don't Think So!!!!.......2001-05-24
I bought this book and was severely disappointed. The author seems to take shots at African American's that don't fit his version of "ethnic appropriateness". Particularly, he takes really harsh shots at Diana Ross, The Supremes, Donna Summer and anyone else who has had the courage to just be themselves and shine without paying attention to his particular point of view of how we (African Americans) should look, act or behave. I found it to be a total waste of money, and definitely does not represent all of "Black Beauty", just his tainted point of view.
Well researched coffee table book.......2001-05-10
From its striking cover photo of Grace Jones, to its fact-based, somewhat colorful prose, this is a fascinating book on a controversial subject - black is beautiful - or is it. Mr. Arogundade says it is - and for the most part he's right. He clearly discusses on the history of beauty in the black diaspora, and how it has survived, despite European influences and attempts to define it...the pictures speak for themselves...the subjects are quite stunning...I think it is a great book for black people of all ages, and for non-blacks who are simply curious as to know what defines black beauty...
An insightful history of the black aesthetic.......2001-03-16
In Black Beauty: A History And A Celebration, Ben Arogundade offers a comprehensive and insightful history of the black aesthetic ranging from the days of slavery and its necessity to dehumanize blacks, to the evolution of black cosmetic products, images and hairstyles, to modern day icons of film, television, music, sports, and fashion. This impressive anthology is profusely illustrated throughout with photography from Annie Leibovitz, David Baily, Albert Watson, Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, and others. Black Beauty is impressive, informative, inspiring, occasionally iconoclastic, and a superb addition to any personal, academic, or community library Black Studies collection.
Black History: A History and a Celebration.......2001-01-12
I believe this book is well written and filled with great insight and photos. I found that it gave a good look at some of our heros, and their obsticles that they had to over come before they could revel in the glory of greatness. It also show's some of our struggles as a people of color and how we have made positive progress over the last 100 years. This book offers inspiration because the author himself (from what I understand) had finished his studies to be an architect, and couldn't find steady work in his field. He then stumbled into modeling by chance. After an unsuccessful business venture of his own, not to be beaten Ben pushed forward and successfully rallied to writing and having his work published by a major publishing company I say hats off to him. Congradulations Ben!Job well done. His perserverance and tenacity goes along with the people inside this book that he has written about. Lastly, I definetly recommend this book for all... This is precise and concious writing and it is not just for people of color and who happened to live in the United States. We can all gain something from this book.
