Iain Pears delivers yet again a positive and entertaining reading material in THE TITIAN COMMITEE,surely most readers will feel the need to
review TITIAN paintings as I did to embrace closely with the plot.
Framed with simplicity and easily accesible by all readers it builds up to a great finale almost as a 1950 novel bringing together most of the players in a final deliverance.
Always with the necessary descriptions but not overwhelmly leaves room for the reader to recreate the images.
Hopefully we will continue to receive new art mystery proposals such as this one from the author,Pablo More-Uruguay-South America
Lead characters outshine beautiful location........2006-02-13
The second in the Jonathan Argyll series is dissimilar from the first in that it is set in one location (I prefer books that wander across Europe), but has more enough mystery to keep anyone guessing as suspects come in and out of reasonable suspicion. Not much detail is given to the secondary characters, so it allows for a really quick read with a satisfactory ending that explained why my choice of murder was wrong. As usual with Pears there is historical accuracy, as well as plenty of humor. All in all, a great weekend read when you do not wish to dive into a larger book.

Don't Drink the Water
An Ian Pears' view of ever-romantic Venice never lets readers forget they are in a watery wasteland. However appealing visually, the downside is very dirty water, water everywhere. You can't get "there" from "here" without crossing the canals, and God forbid you should ever, ever fall in!
The protagonists fall in the canals, suffer from seasickness, and root around in sub-basements never meant to be seen by the tourists.
The plot is secondary to the fun and the easy-to-digest art history that author Pears provides. Gorgeous, volatile Flavia and diffident Jonathan (think Hugh Grant) team up to investigate the endangered members of the prestigious Titian Committee, who are being picked off one-by-one. Their directive is to bring the investigation to a speedy, expedient closure that will make the various Italian bureaucracies look good. Solving the crime is secondary. As Flavia's marvelous superior General Bottando informs her when she triumphantly states she has found another body in France, "But you're not meant to be finding more," he said grumpily, "You're meant to be dealing with the more than adequate supply we have already."
It is hard to pigeonhole Pears' Art Mysteries as to type. The satire is good humored, but nevertheless has a bite. The protagonists are made far too uncomfortable and the action too graphic to be a "cozy," and the lack of dedication to task make it impossible to label the stories "hard boiled." If you adore things Italian and have more than a passing interest in art history, I highly recommend this series.

Another Good Entry in the Series.......2003-04-17
This is the second book in this series of art mysteries (Raphael Affair was first). The series need not be read in order as I found when I read this one out of order.
Pears' ironic humor is abundant and his main characters all so human. The cultural aspects always add to the plot and Pears' writing style also adds.
The plot of Titian Committee is good. The author presents the reader with members of a research committee who are all - at some time or other - suspects, prime suspects or murder victims.
Like some of Pears' other books, there is a moral decision/question that throws an extra twist. Are the good guys always good? Or is it good to be a good guy and not so good?
Somehow the reader gets the warm feeling throughout this book that Mr. Pears writes with a constant grin on his face. This is an enjoyable light read.

I think I'd read anything set in Italy, and Iain Pears does a wonderful job conveying its charms in this series. This particular book is set in Venice, which is really brought to life (I got rather excited when the body of a victim was found in a canal that was down the street from a hotel where I once stayed.)
This is my first of Pear's 'art history mysteries,' however, and the characters and the plot have yet to grow on me. Flavia diStefano, an Italian detective, is energetically drawn, but Jonathan Argyll, the art expert who tags along with her, is an enigma. Perhaps he is more colorful in other stories in this series. The plot is pretty tortured and difficult to retain if you are not an art history export. There is rather a lot of detail conveyed third-hand (scenes in which two characters sit in a cafe talking about what a third character said to a fourth character).
Nevertheless, every time I want a 'hit' of Italy, I'm likely to go back to this series for a quick fix!

A little disappointing.......2003-04-30
If you are interrested in Warhammer 40,000 and all its writtings this a must have book. But, there are several books that reprint short stories;mostly from the magazine "Inferno". This is'nt one of the best. The Title story, "Deathwing" is a good read. But, several stories were not as action packed or fast paced as other short stories about the warhammer 40,000 universe.
Nothing Beats 40K.......2002-08-16
With all the Black Library books of this type (mixed short stories), you get some stories you love and some you don't but Deathwing has been one of the best I've read to date. I enjoyed pretty much every story and even those I didn't care for were well written and admirable. As a fan of the Dark Angels, of which the Deathwing is part of, I somewhat wish the entire novel focused on the Dark Angel Chapter instead of including only a few stories on the subject. Although Deathwing is a group reprint of older 40K fiction, a new edition with some of the modern DA stories alongside original DA stories would have been a pleasant surprise. Even though I was disappointed with that aspect, I cannot hold it against the book. The reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that some of the stories were lacking and seemed almost distant from the 40k universe most fans are used to. All and all an excellent read of die-hard fans and newcomers alike.
Dark science fiction set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.......2002-01-27
Truly excellent dark science fiction/military fantasy in the Warhammer 40,000 universe franchised from the UK-based global phenomenon Games Workshop. The title refers to an elite group of near-immortal warriors, part of the Imperial Space Marine Legions who fight rebellion and alien encroachment within and without Mankind's farflung empire in a dark, distant and ruthless future, an empire held together by the will of a mysterious all-powerful Emperor, nearly insane from thousands of years straining to provide a guiding light for interstellar travel through warpspace. The meat of the novel is a gritty and explosive account of the return of Deathwing to their homeworld for recruitment, and the young warriors who aspire to walk among the stars with their ancestors, clad in powered armour and genetically modified for longevity and battle ability. Similarities to the excellent novels _Starship Troopers_ and _Armor_ abound, but for pure breadth and scope, WH40K can't be beat.

Deathwing Over Veynaa is the second part of a tetralogy titled The Last Legionary. Keill Randorr is the sole survivor from the massacre of the protectors of the human worlds. The Warlord plans an interplanetary holocaust from the ashes of which he wants to emerge as the supreme power. Keill is artifially enhanced by super-scientists called the Overseers, and sent on mission after mission to thwart the Warlord's plans.
This was the first example of action-packed space opera that I encountered. For an eleven-year old, this was stirring stuff. Bones replaced by organo-metallic alloy? Intergalactic villainy? Telepathic aliens with unpronounceable names? Elite warriors in a total war between black and white? Bring 'em on!
Not much here for the discerning adult, but a decent read for an imaginative preteen.

In this series, this is definatly my favorite. It's more hard-hitting and plot-driven than the others without missing any charector development.

This is a very helpful book, especially if you are newly diagnosed as prediabetic or diabetic. It answers questions you don't know to ask. Helps you make a plan for living the rest of your life without suffering. Don't get depressed and ignore the diagnosis. Don't think it's the end of your life as you know it.
The Absolutely Best Book About Diabetes.......2006-07-10
As a doctor with diabetes, I was very surprised at how much I didn't know about what I needed to do to maintain good health. Dr. Peter's book is an outstanding source of information to patients, family members and loved ones. It's very complete, easy to read, and very educational. The book is excellent and I've learned a lot from her.

Appealing to the home aquarist.......2006-12-30
As a new fan and keeper of rainbowfish, I am eager to learn as much as I can about these very lovely creatures. Whereas I found Gerald Allen's book interesting, it is geared more towards the scientific community than the home aquarist who aims to provide her or his fish the best possible care. Derek Lambert's Rainbowfishes book is also good but, in my opinion, this title by Gunther Schmida for Barron's fits my needs much better.
Mr. Schmida describes many species, including some I have not encountered even in the more specialized shops or online. The color photos, including a nice series of shots showing Red Rainbowfish spawning and the males of other species displaying, are exciting. The information is written in a knowledgeable yet approachable style, as if the author truly wants to share with the reader. At the end is an index which includes both the popular and scientific names of the fish included. (Note to reviewer wass29 in Moline, IL: see p.22 for information on M. praecox "dwarf neon rainbowfish," the fish you are seeking.) All in all, there is much to like about this small but useful book!
However, there is inconsistency in how quantities are presented. For instance, lengths of fish and recommended tanks are given in both metric and English measurements, very useful for those of us in the US. However, temperatures are given only in Celsius and that is an obstacle to my immediate understanding as I read. Given that this book was translated for the American audience by an American publisher, it is only reasonable to expect it to use the form of measurements we use in the US. If it were published in Europe or Australia, certainly I would not complain.
Also, in the species' descriptions, Mr. Schmida recommends tanks of at least 157 gallons (an uncommon size) to hold certain species, even M. boesemani. However, for other species of the same size or larger he does not make such detailed recommendations. He does not explain why this unusually-sized tank is needed. Could it be because of the individual fish's size or because a school of a certain number is recommended or perhaps for some other reason? I take his tank specifications with a grain of salt.
Even with these concerns of mine, I find this to be an excellent resource for those of us who are enthralled with these beauties from Australasia. I have been using a copy from my local library and now I am ready to purchase my own, I like it so well.
A good Starter book.......2001-10-30
This book is a great addition to any collection. It has valuable information about rainbowfish and some of the different varieties out there, it is a quick informative book to read. However I felt it did not have enough information on all of the different varieties of rainbowfish. I didn't see anything on Dwarf Neon Rainbofish (a very popular one at the fish store where I work part time), also it did not describe all of the fish very well and the info on tank sizes and fish recommendations was incorrect. Even with its shortcomings I own and enjoy it anyways

This book has wonderful pictures and information about the different kinds of rainbowfish.. For anyone that is trying to research which specific rainbowfish they should like to keep it's definately a good choice.. The drawbacks are that the pictures and grouped together on seperate pages from the actual information that pertains to the specific species.. It's only a small gripe however.. I also think that some of the information can be a bit sketchy and there is a portion of the book dedicated to standard aquarium set up which I don't feel should be included in a fish specific book.. That's just my opinion though and if you are new to aquarium keeping it can be very helpful..
Very Good Beginner's Book.......2000-11-29
If you are a beginner at keeping rainbows, this is a very commendable book. It covers all of the basics for keeping and breeding rainbows and you can't ask for more than that from a beginner's book. Also, it provides references for seeking further information. It is leagues above the stacks of picture postcard pamphlets being passed off as "informative" books in the hobby. Still, like most books targeted at a relatively small tropical fish market segment, it is filled with many pictures and few words. A 15 - 30 minute read and you will have digested most, if not all, of the information in this micro-tome. After that, it's an inexpensive reference to the names of many species of rainbow with many excellent photographs and drawings of many species.
However, the editors seemed to have been rather overzealous. In places the text runs just short of the information you would expect, practically begging questions, and I suspect that the author's original text had the information and the editors decided to cut it to save pages. The information in aquarium set-up and maintenance sections is especially abrupt. It's not that the data is incorrect , but a little information can be dangerous. For example, it mentions that carbon is one of the things you can use in a filter but it doesn't discuss the reasons for, or virtues and problems of, using carbon in filters. It appears the editors allowed the author about one sentence for the topic of carbon -- not enough to do justice to the topic but it keeps down the price of a book with lots of color photographs.
Did I mention the photographs and drawings are absolutely excellent?
Greatly exceeded my expectations.......2000-06-21
As a rainbowfish enthusiast, I didn't expect much from this short book, but ordered it because it was the newest available book on the subject. I was delighted about the amount of information packed into its 64 pages.
The authoritative reference on the subject is Gerald R. Allen's "Rainbowfish: in Nature and the Aquarium," but this book is nearly impossible to find lately. Derek Lambert's short 1998 book "Rainbow Fishes : Keeping & Breeding Them in Captivity" had wonderful photography, but little new species information.
This new book by Gunther Schmida is similar in format and photography to Lambert's book, but unlike the Lambert book, this one includes lots of new rainbowfish information. The pictures and descriptions of dozens of new rainbowfish species (not described in the other works) make this book a must-have for serious rainbowfish enthusiasts. It also includes a number of tips and advice not found in other books on the subject.
The photography in the book is top-notch, and the author includes a few tips about how he gets the pictures.
I only have a few criticisms of the book. This book is translated from German and there are a number of editing mistakes and improper metric/english conversions. There is also a short sidebar discussing legal issues regarding keeping an aquarium, but no indication on what country's laws the advice is based upon. This is important because this is a book sold in America, written by a German living in Australia!
But overall I recommend the book. If you could get only one book on Rainbowfish (and can find it!) get the Gerald Allen book. Otherwise get this one, or do what i did, and buy both!
