Customer Reviews:
Don't judge a book by its main character.......2007-05-04
At first, the temptation is to read this book as an autobiography of Robin Cook. Don't give in to it, or you might be further tempted, as I was, to swear off reading anything else by the author. The experiences of the main character are fascinating, and that almost allows you to overlook his increasingly unavoidable character flaws. Mercifully, Dr. Peters isn't Dr. Cook. He's an avenue by which Cook diagnoses the symptoms of a disease doctors catch from internship. It is damning of the medical field that this book is so relevant in the 21st century.
In the end, the book is brave, subtle, and excellently crafted.
Intriguing and disturbing. . ........2007-02-21
The Year Of The Intern chronicles the year a young doctor spends as an intern. Along with lots of fascinating medical detail, the book takes a searingly honest look at the physical and psychological cost to the intern. These include: the near-indescribable exhaustion, the expectation of carrying out complicated and risky procedures the intern does not have the experience for, the life-or-death decisions to be made daily, dealing with anxious, angry and distraught relatives and, worst of all, the gradual ebbing of empathy eg Dr Peters starts thinking of each patient by their disease rather than their name.
What really disturbed me was the fact that this was written in 1972 and so little has really changed. This should be compulsory reading for anyone thinking of entering the medical or nursing professions. If it doesn't put you off, you've found your calling!
Bad Medicine.......2007-01-03
This is and old book and I really hope things have changed. They have not in Third World countries where some of the terrible things described in this book still happen every day. If you study Medicine or are a physician, you will find this book quite useful with its rough stories to make you reflect on the so many things that can go wrong in a hospital and how important is to realize you work with and for human beings. The book is great but to know this things can happen is just sad.
Outstanding.......2006-09-17
This is not a medical mystery novel. It is, in fact, written in an auto-biographical perspective from an intern--a doctor in his first year of training AFTER medical school. I have read, re-read, and pondered this book and find, that after 20 years, the last chapter(s) are still accurate. The training of physicians, today, is antiquated--has not changed since the "Halstead-ean" era of college, medical school, internship, residency, and fellowship. If you want to go to medical school I suggest you read this book and the book called, "Intern" by "Dr. X". . .you'll quickly change your mind about pursuing medical school.
The truth about medical training.......2006-06-25
This book is honest and crisp. Some of the descriptions of "doctors" are terrifying. Surgery performed by the inept G.P., or the surgical egomaniac, assisted by Dr. Peters, who can barely stay awake, in fact, often doesn't, while he's holding the wound open with retractors. Dr. Cook has a sense of humor and a great memory for details that must have actually happened during his own internship. Medical training is medieval, according to this story. His elusive romances make the reader more sympathetic. No wonder alternative medicine is such a popular pursuit these days.

Customer Reviews:
Great personal account of what the profession is like.......2006-08-22
This was a terrific book on what it's like to start out as a doctor. He describes events from his internship from the perspective of a newcomer, and I felt what it was like to become a doctor without having to go through all that medical school stuff. The most interesting part to me was when he described the feelings medical students go through in separating in their mind the physical body and the psychological being inside. I've always thought that since I faint at the sight of blood I would never be able to be a doctor, but that's what most new medical students do!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I enjoyed even more his other book on becoming a psychiatrist, because it included more personal stories about the philosophical questions he encountered during this transition in his life.
The author also writes very interesting articles for the New York Times, some of which you can find if you search the web.
Brilliant Account of a First-Year Medical Internship.......2000-01-03
Dr. Robert Klitzman writes with passion and insight about the particular rewards and frustrations associated with the process of becoming a physician. With profound sensitivity, he articulates the challenges of learning how to heal not only the body but the soul. He is a writer of dimension, heart and integrity. A writer to remember.
unfeeling.......1999-06-30
This story of the author's year as an intern comes across as a monotonous recitation of events with little insight into the author himself. We learn that he learned a lot, likes to criticize nurses, and apparently made no mistakes in his intern year.
Strangely, the book comes alive in the 20-page epilogue, in which the author narrates his pre-med school work in the remote areas of Papua New Guinea studying kuru. The author opens up his feelings and experiences with a fascinating story of the contrast between the cultures and medical practices, and kuru itself. If you come across this book, skip the first 222 pages and read the epilogue....

Favorite book from my childhood........2005-05-27
Elfwood is the first book I can remember reading as a child. I read it in one day, because I simply couldn't put it down. It started my love of reading. Its a wonderful tale of fantasy with colorful characters, slight humor, and an easy to follow plot. A+
Light, fun fantasy.......1999-06-20
While Elfwood is not particularly inspired or profound, it IS a lot of fun. The characters are splendid, lightly mocking those of traditional fantasy. At the same time, they do undergo realistic development. The plot moves along at a good pace with well-placed humor and there's never a dull moment. Perfect for summer reading! Unfortunately, the sequel by Kevin Stein fails to live up to Elfwood's standards.
Very good and magically creative........1999-05-26
I really liked this book. It leaves you wanting to read more about Castle Elfwood, but unfortunately I haven't found any other books in this series.

Hilarious.......1999-04-25
I knew this book was definitely not going to be living up to its much better predecessor, Elfwood, when I caught myself laughing at bits which were plainly NOT supposed to be funny. I really couldn't help it-- the writing is just so blantantly bad. All our old characters from Elfwood were reduced to simpering ninnies, and the old knight, Cedric, had me in stitches with his bombastic monologues about the bygone days of chivlary and honor and blah, blah, blah. Oh, and, was there a plot? Something about a dragon? I can't seem to recall one. It must have been drowned out by my laughter. All I can say is if you liked Elfwood, don't read Twisted Dragon.

The book has been updated to reflect the use of nonfat and low-fat ingredients that didn't exist just a few years ago. Recipes include appetizers, snacks, beverages, soups, salads, entrées (seafood, poultry, meat, vegetarian), vegetables, side dishes, sauces, breads, breakfasts, and, of course, desserts. Many are healthier versions of old favorites--such as Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken à la King, Sweet and Sour Pork, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Devil's Food Cake, and Chocolate Chip Cookies--with some new entries that reflect modern eating trends, like Portobello Mushroom Wrap with Yogurt Curry Sauce, Pad Thai, Curried Quinoa Salad with Cranberries and Almonds, and Artichoke and Chick-Pea Pilaf. Whether you want a quick meal, a nutritious dinner the whole family will enjoy, or a festive entrée to impress guests, this book has an array of choices.
Most recipes reflect AHA guidelines: no more than 30 percent total fat, 8 to 10 percent saturated fat, less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day; plenty of vegetables and grains; and moderate sugar and sodium. Some recipes are higher in fat, but you balance those with lower-fat recipes on other days of the week. Nutritional information includes calories, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), fiber, and sodium. --Joan Price

New American Heart Association Cookbook.......2007-09-15
The New American Heart Association cookbook 7th addition is great, after my husband suffered a heart attack I knew we had to change the way we looked at food, all the meals are tasty and well planned. It gives you tools to change the way you cook and eat for a healthy lifestyle.
Yummy.......2007-08-09
I really like this cookbook. It is SO well organized! There's a table of contents, and index, and the section breaks are clearly delineated so you can turn to them easily and quickly. This isn't rocket science, but it's something the authors of many other cookbooks can't seem to wrap their brains around.
So far I've made a handful of the recipes. They aren't gourmet; they are basic family fare. I've liked everything that I've made from here. The warm orzo salad with black beans and ham, and the portobello and sirloin strips over spinach noodles were particularly well-received.
Yum.......2007-07-30
7th Edition, New American Heart Association Cookbook is quickly becoming one of my favorite cookbooks. Nice sauces, delicious recipes from appetizers through entees to desserts.
I'll be giving this book as a gift to others.
Great Cookbook.......2007-05-28
Lots of great recipes and not a lot of ingredients that you need to make a special trip to the grocery store for.
I'd rather die than use this book.......2007-05-25
I'd rather die of a heart attack than cook from this book! I bought it for my husband because he has high colesterol, but every recipe we tried was lacking in flavor. The Southwestern Ratatouille was bland, and other recipes didn't fare any better. The recipe titles are tantalizing, but fail to deliver flavor.
Customer Reviews:
Macro central.......2005-09-22
Having never read this author before, I did not know she was a macrobiotics enthusiast. I just wanted some general information on improving my diet. I'm not interested in macrobiotics. However, in perusing the book, it seemed to be very detailed and comprehensive. It also seemed to be very labor intensive. If you're into macrobiotics, I guess it's a labor of love. It just wasn't for me.
A Macrobiotic Pot of Gold.......2002-01-06
This book saved my life! This is not a book to read lightly. Use highlighters & make notes. It is packed with a plethora of information that will assist anyone with a chronic condition. Dr Rogers spent a couple of years with Michio Kushi & watched & learned as he counselled chronic & terminal clients. This book explains techniques & foods that one cannot find in typical macrobiotic books. How much of this should I use? How often? If I'm craving this, what am I missing? What does this symptom mean? What is this food doing for my body? How important is this in my diet? How do I make this? What is a healing crisis? What is a healing phase? How do I put it all together? How do I begin? How do I keep it going? What do I do when I get discouraged/cravings/busy/bored? All this is answered & more - Dr Rogers speaks of supplement deficiencies that will cause certain disorders or symptoms (remember, we're dealing with chronically ill situations here that have long standing deficiencies of such great degree that balance can only be achieved through the use of supplementation). Learn what mineral deficiencies can cause high cholesterol regardless of your diet. Learn which mineral is deficient in 80% of North Americans (& causes tension, constipation, muscle knots & road rage). I rarely read a book more than once (relying on highlighted material for reference), but this book has been my bedside companion for many a year, helping me through MCS and its companion symptoms. No other diet has given me the peace, centredness & relationship with my body as has macrobiotics, but I was never able to fully appreciate what the diet could do for me until I read this book. If you have the courage to leave behind all the trappings of the typical Western diet, this book will show you how, with effort & organization & understanding, how you can make every cell in your body cry out for joy, finally able to function at their optimum level.
Sherry was my doctor!.......2001-02-02
Sherry Rogers was my doctor for a number of years. She was always ahead of her time and now it shows! All of her books are wonderful, informative, easy to read and life saving. I hope everyone gets as much from this and all her books as I have. You'll be amazed at how much you DON'T know about your body, the environment and how we are killing ourselves until you read these books. Trust me, I am only a consumer here, but I pass these books on to everyone I care about and have for years! I'm going to post this to all the books I have read by Sherry. I just can't say enough about this woman. She literally saved my life (allergies, life and health threatening mineral and vitamin deficiencies) and my husband's too (bladder cancer). Love, Susan Manchester

Known for its hunting skills and endless energy, the Jack Russell Terrier is absolutely a breed apart. In addition to discussion of the breed's development and working history, this book will serve as a new owner's reference, with guidance on care, feeding and training the companion dog.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on Jack Russell Terriers I've found!.......2000-07-12
In this book, Catherine Brown gives readers a true account of life with a Jack Russell Terrier. I have done Jack Russell Terrier rescue for several years, and have shared my home with many Jack Russell Terriers and can appreciate every single word she writes about this challenging and fun-loving breed. Her description of their true nature, along with her complete honesty about the breed, is exactly what people considering this unique little dog need to know. Readers will find all qualities of the Jack Russell, good and bad, in this book. I will be sending a copy of this book home with each person that purchases one of our puppies. I highly recommend it to Jack Russell enthusiasts and to anyone even considering sharing their life with these "thugs in white clown suits." It gives an excellent history of the development of this versatile hunting terrier, and provides wonderful insight into it's origins and purpose. A must have for any Jack Russell fan!
Practical Information Wrapped in a Beautiful Package.......2000-04-08
Ms. Brown offers a comprehensive view of life with the average Jack Russell Terrier; she also warns us that there is no such thing as an "average" Jack Russell. The information is presented with humor and genuine admiration for this quirky, sturdy and brazen breed. The text is complimented with stunning color photographs of dogs and puppies in action. Ms. Brown also highlights some of the great foundation dogs and it is always a thrill to find one in your new pup's pedigree. This is a wonderful first book for those considering a JRT, and we veteran owners appreciate a reference book that looks beautiful on the coffee table -- it is a welcome relief from the dead mice our JRTs leave for us under our beds!

Book Description
The Lisu people, whose lives have been recorded in this publication, are predominantly women of a mountain community in northern Thailand. Along with their men, they have been growing poppies for opium for over a century, the sales of which have been sustained their non-authoritarian society and its implied repute ideology. While living with them for several years, the author observed how newly introduced substitute crops involving a change in production and trade relations had upset the previously egalitarian basis of female and male worth, as exemplified in the metaphor of elephant and dog. The modified gender system in which the Lisu female has become an underdog is described against the backdrop of conventional ideas regarding the cosmic forces, the division of labour, bridewealth and marriage.
Book Description
An old master print with color is almost invariably regarded as a suspect object because the color is presumed to be a cosmetic addition made to compensate for deficiencies of design or condition. Painted Prints challenges this deeply entrenched assumption about the material and aesthetic structure of old master prints by showing that in many cases hand coloring is not a dubious supplement to a print but is instead an integral element augmenting its expressive power, beauty, and meaning.
Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Baltimore Museum of Art and St. Louis Art Museum, Painted Prints reproduces and discusses a rich variety of hand-colored prints from Northern Europe of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Anonymous woodcuts are juxtaposed with masterworks by such famed artists as Dürer, Holbein, and Goltzius. These prints, secular as well as religious, muted as well as vibrant in tonality, make it clear that hand coloring was a widespread, enduring practice, developed to satisfy the demands of both elite and popular audiences.
Painted Prints presents new research into the men and women who specialized in hand coloring and offers numerous insights into the social and economic organization of Renaissance and Baroque printmaking. It also draws on scientific analyses of the materials and techniques of hand coloring to address important questions of authenticity, chronology, and condition. With a catalogue and color illustrations of all the hand-colored prints in the exhibition, this book makes a groundbreaking contribution to the study of old master prints and their pivotal place in the visual culture of early modern Europe.
The exhibition, "Painted Prints: The Revelation of Color in Northern Renaissance and Baroque Engravings, Etchings, and Woodcuts," will be at The Baltimore Museum of Art from October 6, 2002, to January 5, 2003 and St. Louis Art Museum from February 14 to May 18, 2003.
Book Description
Born to a Mexican father and an Anglo mother, Luis Urrea grew up in the middle of a clash of cultures and languages. In prose that seethes with energy and crackles with dark humor, he tells a story of what it means to belong to a nation that is sometimes painfully multicultural. Brutally honest and deeply moving, Nobody's Son is a testament to the borders that divide us all.
Customer Reviews:
About coping with division and borders.......2003-01-04
Nobody's Son: Notes From An American Life by Luis Alberto Urrea (who teaches creative writing at the University of Illinois, Chicago) is the deeply personal memoir of an American born to a Mexican father and an Anglo mother. Recounting a childhood thrust in the middle of different cultures and languages, Nobody's Son is about the search for balance, about coping with division and borders, and about the pain as well as the joy of being multicultural. Nobody's Son is a candid, engaging, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and very highly recommended autobiography.
A journey through the heart of a writer........1999-04-12
From multinational beginnings impossibly diverse, Urrea leads us on a journey that explores how he became what he is, an American writer of the first order. Sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious, always heartfelt, it is a wonderful journey for the reader. Before he can write from the heart, an author must first know his heart. Luis Urrea knows his, and shares it with us beautifully.
This book touched my heart!.......1999-03-06
All his stories are written from his soul. They always have been. I wish that I could have taken the pain away from his childhood. I'm glad that I have known him. I wish him much success in all he does. I knew he was a great writer. I'm glad others are seeing how good he is now!
Another fine book by America's best "unknown" writer.......1999-01-07
Luis Alberto Urrea is among the finest living writers. He has written about the border in three books. Nobody's Son is the latest. But he is not regional, not limited to a single geographic area. In Nobody's Son he moves from Tijuana and San Diego, to the Southwest, and further north to the high plains, in what amounts to a continuing journey. A journey across the land, through memory, in exploration of spirit. Urrea's story is uniquely American--the child of a Waspy, Wonder Bread white mother and a muy macho! Mexicano father, his is the story of those differences that divide us and yet hold us inevitably together. He is America's best kept secret, its soul.
life on both sides of the US-Mexican border........1998-12-12
Luis Urrea is the John Steinbeck of the border, offering a nostelgic, heartfelt, first-person experience of what it is like to grow up in two cultures, two cities (Tijuana and San Diego) and two worlds. He writes with passion, heart, and a gift for words in two languages.
