What a disappointment.......2007-06-01
Yes, a huge disappointment - I had been eagerly looking forward to reading this, based on the intriguing story line, but my impression is that while the author has a good imagination when it comes to creating a story-line, her actual delivery and basic writing style fail to match it. I like intelligent writing by authors who recognise that readers are intelligent too, but in this case central character Nicole Chandler is constantly going over the events of the day or night before, in effect asking the questions that the reader is supposed to be asking. Did he do it? Or was it him? And all too often Nicole has a conversation with somebody, then meets somebody else shortly afterwards and tells that person the details of that previous conversation. While that may often happen in real life, it's tiresomely repetitive for the reader. Billed as a 'suspense thriller', this was little more than interesting, with hardly any suspense and really no thrills at all. Considering the story is based upon brutal rape and multiple murders, the descriptions of these events are not in any way shocking or disturbing and consequently they fail to intill a sense of fear or revulsion in the reader. Well, not this one, anyway. Compared to Retribution (by Jilliane Hoffman) or The Lovely Bones (by Alice Sebold), Tonight You're Mine doesn't even stand comparison.
the best thriller I have read lately.......2006-09-17
I have been reading a lot of thrillers lately, and have decided that Carlene Thompson is by far my favorite writer in this genre. Her books are very well written. Her characters are much more intelligent and self reliant than most. I have been distracted and annoyed by the poor grammar, characters' names changing out of the author or editor's carelessness, and overly elaborate descriptions of characters' clothing I have encountered all too often in my recent reading. Carlene Thompson writes a very exciting, suspenseful story in a very literate way. I found "Tonight You're Mine" to be about the best and most exciting suspense story out of approximately 30 I have read in the last month.
I could not put this book down!.......2006-04-16
Carlene Thompson is becoming more a leader in this genre every time she puts out a new book. Her writing continues to develop and mature. I truly loved this book and hope the trend continues.
I really enjoyed the way the Nicole was portrayed and anyone who's gone through a divorce (or had a friend go through one) will be highly entertained by how Thompson handled this plot element in her book.
Nay sayer.......2006-04-14
From the posted reviews, I am in the minority it appears. I found this book a hard read that failed to hold my interest for any length of time. The characters are unappealing, the dialoge (especially the child, Shelby,) unbelievable, and the romance between Nicole/Paul, Nicole/Ray, what romance? The really love interest does not come physically on scene till close to the end and there was no chemistry between them and little interaction that holds interest.
If it is a suspenseful romance your seeking,I can not recommend this book.
Great.......2004-07-01
This is just other of Carlene Thompson outstanding books. I love her books.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting adventure.......2000-07-22
This is a sequel to the novel, "Derelict for Trade." It makes substantial references back to the previous book, and the reader should probably read the books in the order they were written. The story is interesting as the crews of the North Star and Solar Queen attempt to exploit the mineral resources on the planet Hesprid IV. It turns out not to be a milk run as they encounter wretched weather, unexpected XTs, stranded miners, and pirates. The question is whether they can come out of the venture with a profit. The story is well developed and generally well written. The authors have an annoying habit of sometimes switching back and forth between using characters' first names and using their last names - potentially confusing if a reader has not developed a rapport with the characters.
The Solar Queen is Back.......1999-10-22
I grew up reading Andre Norton. And the adventures of the Solar Queen were always a favorite. Once again the intrepid crew must overcome the obstacles in their pursuit of profitable trade, from pirates and aliens to a strange telepathic link developing between the main characters. Olds fans will enjoy it -- still some of the best young adult sf. This is not "great" sf, but it is a fine rainy afternoon read, and what more can anyone want.
Great Characterization & Setting.......1999-05-02
Yes, another Solar Queen adventure. Again Andre Norton has surpassed the average writer's abilities to write a great book. Sherwood Smith was the reason why I bought this book, he needs to get more books out in print, NOW!
After 40 years, but the Solar Queen and crew are still fresh.......1998-10-06
The Solar Queen and the North Star are checking out the Hesprid IV claim in hopes that they can clear a profit. But several external circumstances seem to be conspiring against them. First there are the unknown ' PSI ' effects being displayed by the apprentices. The planet's extreme fluctuations in EMP, hostile weather, frequent earthquakes, and increasing solar activity, are compounding the dangers of trying to mine any profitable cargo volume. And then there are the other ships 'hiding' within the system who could very well be pirates.
The Solar Queen is back!! When I first began to read science fiction as a teen, Andre Norton was a favorite. In later years she expanded to subject and style areas that I did not, but I always maintained my enjoyment of her 'original' works. 'THE BEAST MASTER', 'THE SIOUX SPACEMAN', and all of the 'Solar Queen' series are still on my 'Favorite Books for life' list! Now, in partnership with Sherwood Smith, Norton has returned to the original 50's sci-fi opera style with two new Solar Queen stories. 'DERELICT FOR TRADE' and 'A MIND FOR TRADE' are better than Cool...
Book Description
A comprehensive, practical, and authoritative guide to the method developed by Iyengar. 100 key postures with detailed step-by-step instructions and photographs. This is our most recently published yoga book and has quickly become a backlist bestseller.
Customer Reviews:
Very Satisfied.......2007-10-10
I purchased this book for teacher training class and I am pleased to say that it is very helpful to me. It would also come in very handy for someone new to Yoga because it has history, philosophy, and examples of every move all in one book. Easy to read and understand, although I would recommend buying the spiral bound version. I did not know it was offered and bought the origional. It is much easier to keep a spiral bound book opened while trying to master any asana.
Great book if you have a little experience.......2007-09-22
This is an excellent book for home practice of yoga, provided you have moderate experience through classes and previous home study. The photos and explanations of asanas are very clear, though the practitioner may not possess the same degree of flexibility as the models. The asanas cover a reasonable range of difficulty: there's some challenge, but a diligent student would have hopes of learning all of them. The scattered "reflections" are extremely helpful. The textual explanation of underlying yoga principles, though good, could be expanded somewhat, but one can't expect everything in a book this size.
Comparing with Iyengar's "Light on Yoga", the present book is shorter, more user-friendly, has a more modern look, contains fewer asanas, and has less (but more easily readable) discussions of yoga principles. Serious students will likely purchase both in the long run, but the present book is a better first buy.
FANTASTIC BOOK!.......2007-08-28
First time Yoga practicer. Purchased this book for an introductory Yoga course but never used it in class. However I do use it now that I am home alone. It has WONDERFUL IMAGES and DIRECTIONS. It also has "lessons" for you and natural "remedies" for back aches, head aches, etc. The yoga poses in this book helped me relieve my lower back pain in less than a week! I Love this book!
Well written.......2007-08-16
This is a well written book that takes the yogi through easy to harder poses with concise instructions ans adjustments that can be made as ones body adapts to the Asana.
Highly recommend. Also might like:

Great introduction to Iyengar yoga.......2007-07-24
As a yoga novice, with a few classes under my belt, I wanted a clear and easy reminder of the various poses and how they are supposed to be done (since I have little confidence that I am doing them correctly just yet!) This book fits the bill perfectly. The pages are well-laid out, the instructions are easy to understand, and the variations help me incorporate them when I am not bendy enough to do the full pose! I highly recommend this book as an introduction to Iyengar yoga.
Book Description
B.K.S. Iyengar, hailed as the Michelangelo of yoga (BBC) and considered by many to be the most important living yoga master, has spent much of his life introducing the modern world to the ancient practice of yoga. Yoga's popularity is soaring, but its widespread acceptance as an exercise for physical fitness and the recognition of its health benefits have not been matched by an understanding of the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development that the yogic tradition can also offer. In Light on Life, B.K.S. Iyengar explains this new and more complete understanding of the yogic journey. Here Iyengar explores the yogic goal to integrate the different parts of the self (body, emotions, mind and soul); the role that the yoga postures and breathing techniques play in our search for wholeness; the external and internal obstacles that keep us from progressing along the path; and how yoga can transform our lives and help us to live in harmony with the world around us. For the first time, Iyengar uses stories from his own life, humor, and examples from modern culture to illustrate the profound gifts that yoga offers. Written with the depth of this sage's great wisdom, Light on Life is the culmination of a master's spiritual genius, a treasured companion to his seminal Light on Yoga.

Yoga For The Heart .......2006-11-08
This book has been a gift to society. BKS Iyengar discloses his being and we get a glimpse of what yoga can be like for a master and that we too can attain bliss yoga as well.
I am a yoga teacher and this book is great for teachers as well because you can share with your students selected readings before their practice to encourage them to take their practice to another level.
I own the book as well as the CD. I listen to the CD on my IPOD and in the car. It is uplifting and inspirational.
May it bring you to wholeness, inner peace and ultimate freedom and may all being attain that as well.
Have a blissfull day,

Book Description
Features many innovative recipes for vegetarian "mock meat" dishes, just like those enjoyed in Buddhist restaurants, as well as authentic, flavorful vegetable dishes. These recipes produce great results without exotic ingredients or special cooking equipment.
Customer Reviews:
This book is OK........2006-07-23
I appreciate what the author was trying to do with this book; it's great to have a source for Chinese-style mock meats. However, after trying several of the recipes, I found that they just aren't as good as I thought they would be.
I was excited to use vital wheat gluten to whip up a batch of seitan, but it turned out to be incredibly gummy. I assume this problem is avoidable, but the directions in the book don't give much guidance: "Mix until it forms a smooth, firm dough. Knead briefly." There's no information about what to do you if instead of a smooth dough, you end up with a rubbery, bouncy ball. (Perhaps it's better to mix and knead by hand rather than using my mixer? Tips like this would help a lot!)
As far as the regular recipes go, they are hit and miss. The simpler the recipe, the better they seem turn out. The page on Basic Stir-Fried Chinese Vegetables contains really useful information, and the recipe on the facing page for Stir Fried Chinese Broccoli is a winner. However, the "Beef" and Broccoli with "Oyster" Sauce and the Kung Pao "Chicken" are just OK, and Mapo Doufu was downright weird. But I will still continue to work my way through the book; I would like to try the Lemon "Chicken" and some of the versions of the Steamed Savory Filled Buns.
Overall, it is a decent resource for vegetarian Chinese cooking. For people who are interested in this topic, it's probably a good place to start. I would recommend using store-bought seitan though!
Fabulous Chinese cuisine by the greatest vegan cook!.......2002-11-17
Bryanna's Italian cookbook "Nonna's Italian Kitchen" must be the very finest ever example of vegan cookbook published to this date. And now she's done it again - with this wonderful vegan cookbook on Chinese cuisine, taking you all the way through dumplings, dim sum, noodles, soups, stir-fries, ... and vegetarian "mock-meats" that were invented thousands of years ago by strict buddhist monks. Whereas it used to be quite a work to rinse out the starch of a flour ball so that only the protein (gluten) was left, the arrival of pure gluten powder makes this a snap to prepare at home. While some recipes are somewhat elaborate which acquire some routine (making dumplings, spring rolls, etc.), there are several quick recipes (stir-fry chapter a.o.) that are very easy to prepare. It is an excellent cookbook if you love chinese foods, and the innovative inclusion of above-mentioned "mock-meats" makes it a cut above the rest. The pages are jam-packed with one tasty recipe after the other - this is a shining example that you do not need to feel deprived when embarking on a vegan diet.
for those pursuing a vegetarian life style.......2001-01-28
Authentic Chinese Cuisine For The Contemporary Kitchen offers a superbly developed compendium of vegetarian Chinese recipes similar to those found in a Buddhist restaurant. Bryanna Grogan brings her expertise to bear in offering delicious, nutritious recipes for homemade "Mock Meats"; savory snacks and appetizers; dumplings and breads; rice; noodles, soups, and sauces; stir-fried dishes; braised, steamed, and stewed dishes; and even sweets. From Shanghai Spring Rolls, Mandarin Pancakes, and Savory Rice Porridge, to Duck Sauce, Buddha's Delight, and Walnut Cookies, Authentic Chinese Cuisine For The Contemporary Kitchen will quickly became a personal and family favorite for those pursuing a vegetarian lifestyle.
Amazon.com
The Chinese Kitchen is equally useful whether you are selecting your first Chinese cookbook or adding to an already substantial collection. This encyclopedic volume is crammed with detailed information, recipes you know yet probably have not made at home, and color photographs from China that bring the culture and culinary interests of the country compellingly to life. Opening with a useful explanation of the fundamentals of Chinese cooking, you learn how all food is viewed for its seasonal, medicinal, and nutritional values; how color, aroma, flavor, shape, and texture must be balanced in each dish; and how today's cooking goes beyond the classic five flavors. Two-page spreads for more than 100 ingredients include the name in calligraphy and Western letters, the Latin name, and entries for how the item is grown or produced, how to judge its quality, how to store processed foods as well as fresh items, and both medicinal and culinary uses.
In the recipes, precise directions help even beginners get good results: for instance, "Cut the beef across the grain into thin slices the size of a large postage stamp." Recipes make dishes as they would be in China, so Spareribs in Sweet and Sour Sauce are pleasantly pungent without chunks of pineapple, carrot, or onion. From Fujian province, the Stir-Fried Chicken with Cilantro is a delicate combination of sliced breast and ginger, scallions, and coriander. Adventurous cooks will comfortably discover Bean Curd Skin and Asparagus Soup, a simple dish with appealing flavor. For dessert, Chinese Fruit Salad, combining fresh or canned lychees, cubed melon, and other fruits in the scooped out melon, which is nestled in crushed ice, lets you bring the care of Chinese presentation to the table easily.
Though Deh-Ta Hsiung tells little of how he traveled from Beijing, his birthplace, to London, or how he acquired his masterful command of cooking, bits of his personal history weave through The Chinese Kitchen. In all, he is a most welcome teacher. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
Over 75 deliciously authentic Chinese dishes for the Western kitchen. Recipes from all over China, including traditional favorites and regional specialities.
Customer Reviews:
Not just a recipe book.......2007-04-07
There are probably books with more recipes - recipes aren't really the focus of this book. It's a treatise on the ingredients that go into Chinese cooking, an encyclopedia of what goes into the food and how to find it, how to use it, and where it comes from. I found it delightful reading, and I can now go to the local markets without always feeling that I have no idea what I'm looking at. I bought it as a gift for my son, read it before handing it over, and think I'm probably going to have to get one for myself. It's beautiful to look at, too.
Fine content shameful binding.......2005-01-23
The background and recipes are quite good but the paper back book is a disgrace. My copy is less than a year old but nearly every page has separated from the "perfect" binding. The publisher should give a[...]to anyone who has bought this. Five stars for the author, [...], so a two overall.
The basic GO-TO book for beginners to gourmets........2001-10-04
This book presents all the basic ingredients for a Chinese kitchen. If you think you "kinda know" but not really, here is your reference book. The three things that strike me are the accurate descriptions, beautiful photos and pragmatic use of each of the items.
The recipes factually represent authentic old time use.
I would buy this book for the younger Chinese so that they won't forget "what, why and how".
R-e-a-l Chinese Food.......2000-09-09
I have always enjoyed Deh Ta-Hsiung's recipes. They are simple to follow & difficult to get wrong, even for a novice cook like me! The recipes he shares range from tasty family dishes to making your own Peking duck or roasting your own barbeque pork which are difficult to come by in most Chinese cook books. Mr Deh also takes time to explain how different types of ingredients come together, and offers to the uninitiated, methods of preparing an ingredient, and photographs which makes me want to dog-ear all the pages with the recipes I plan to try! Most of all, Deh's cooking leads to the most authentic tasting Chinese food!I'm glad the author has finally released an US edition! My only complaint is there just aren't enough recipes!
good information & nice photos.......2000-09-05
Deh-Ta Hsiung is a British-based mainland-trained chef whose polite opinions keep this nicely organized and illustrated book interesting. Although he ignores much of the Cantonese-style cooking that is prevalent in many Chinese cookbooks available in the US, his information is traditional, accurate, and all of the 10 or so recipes I've tried so far have been good. Ingredients such as tofu, oyster sauce, malt sugar, five-spice powder, and Sichuan peppercorns are presented individually with Chinese characters, Pinyin, English, and Latin (for the plants) and photographs of the ingredient and recipes and photos of one or two representative dishes. There's also information provided on how the ingredient grows or is produced or packaged, what it looks and tastes like, how to buy and store it, some basic medicinal uses,...and recipes! I like to use the book in combination with Nina Simonds' and Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's books--taking the best of each.
Customer Reviews:
Find another book.......2000-07-21
Don't get me wrong... this book has some useful information. But it's nothing you can't find elsewhere, about dogs in general or boxers in particular. You're paying for glossy pictures and a very slim volume.
The little useful information that you'll find here is, alas, written in a cloying, cutesy and often ungrammatical style that really drew on my reserves to get through it. I don't normally review books, and rarely give bad reviews, but in this case, I wish I hadn't bought the book.
Excellent source for first-time boxer owners........1999-02-07
Patti Rutledge has created an excellent one stop source for first time boxer owners. "Guide to Owning a Boxer" is very well written and contains many wonderful color pictures. This book is a must reference for anyone who loves the Boxer breed.

This unique guide demonstrates how CAD can be an indispensable tool throughout the entire creative design process. It offers novice and experienced CAD users a working understanding of 2D and 3D computer graphics within the context of design issues and principles. One primary feature of this book is its integration of several software applications, highlighting AutoDesk and Adobe products. Its focus, however, is on the way CAD enables you and your clients to visualize built environments, explore alternative ideas, and revise design solutions before construction begins. Case studies and hands-on tutorials aid readers in developing accurate 3D digital models ... creating new color palettes ... studying dynamic behaviors of light ... exploring materiality of 3D form ... animating ideas ... and simulating special environmental conditions.

An Inconvenient Truth
ASIN: 1578068770 |
Book Description
Huey P. Newton's powerful legacy to the Black Panther Movement and the civil rights struggle has long been obscured. Conservatives harp at Newton's drug use and at the circumstances of his death in a crack-related shooting. Liberals romanticize his black revolutionary rhetoric and idealize his message.
In Huey P. Newton: The Radical Theorist, Judson L. Jeffries considers the entire arc of Newton's political role and influence on civil rights history and African American thought. Jeffries argues that, contrary to popular belief, Newton was one of the most important political thinkers in the struggle for civil rights.
Stripped of history and interpretation, the violence of Newton's life brought emphatic indictments of him. Newton's death attracted widespread media attention. However, pundits offered little on Newton as freedom fighter or as theoretician and activist.
Huey P. Newton: The Radical Theorist dispels myths about Newton's life, but the book is primarily an in-depth examination of Newton's ideas. By exploring this charismatic leader, Jeffries' book makes a valuable contribution to the scant literature on Newton, while also exposing the core tenets and evolving philosophies of the Black Panther Party.
Customer Reviews:
A much needed book.......2004-07-03
Much has been written about Huey of the decades, truths and falsities. This book is something that is missing from the large amount of information written about Huey. This is not a historical critique or timeline of the Panthers, but, a look into Huey's evolution while leader of the Panthers. From Black Nationalist to internationalist.
A much needed missing piece about Huey's theoretical development.
