An Entertaining medieval Mystery.......2005-03-19
Sir Josse has been invited to visit his neighbour Brice's manor and while he is there Brice says that he would like Josse to meet some friends of his. Not wishing to appear impolite Sir Josse agrees to travel with him to his friends.
When they arrive Sir Josse finds that there is an ulterior motive to their visit. The elderly knight he has been brought to see has a young and beautiful wife of seventeen or eighteen who is devoted to her husband and although they have been trying since their marriage they have been unable to conceive a child. The knight Sir Ambrose has been told of Josse's involvement with Hawkenlye Abbey and the success they have had with healing the sick in mind and body.
After speaking with Sir Josse, Ambrose agrees to allow his wife Galiena to go on ahead to the Abbey with her maid and groom and he will follow in a couple of days. His hope is that the nuns can help his wife with their inability to have a child.
However when Galiena arrives at the Abbey she is alone and her demeanour is totally different to the happy and devoted wife the nuns had expected. A tragic death sets Sir Josse on the path of danger and intrigue. The Abbess Helewise becomes embroiled in the same dangers that face Josse and the perils reach out to the Abbey itself . . .

Customer Reviews:
Well...........2001-10-26
I have to give all the short story novels 3 stars. There are some stories you won't like but they'll 2-4 really great ones that will make the books worth the price.
Good, but not the most excellent.......2001-09-24
This book was quite a good book. I read a lot of books. My favorites are in the dragonlance world. While some of the stories in this book were boring. The remainder were well written and fun to read. This book had just the right mixture of funny stories, and more serious stories. The true demise of toede, had to be one of the funniest. I would recommend this book to anyone who truly loves dragonlance.
Altogether good book.......2000-10-26
This was a fine compilation of tales, with stories that though made no big impact on the history of the series, were interesting and in themselves nice diversions from life. "Wanna Bet?" was an excellent form of characterization that was fun to follow, and narration in these stories was surely what made most of these tales fun at all. My only problem with this was, I read about Kender, and I read about Gnomes, but I failed to find any Gully Dwarves in this story, so it received the rating that you yourself see above.
Very Funny book.......2000-07-03
All I can say is that the book was great. The majority of the storys were extremly funny, and the others wern't meant to be. Some were Inspirational, especially the first story were Tasslehoff Burrfoot has to save his comrades whom are lost in the snow. Margaret Weis, and Tracy Hickman are my two favorite writers. The only downfall to this book is that one, or two of the storys are boring, and slow. But, that is made up by the other great stories in the book.
5 stars until Wanna Bet showed up.......1999-10-17
I have noticed that most of you have been praising wanna bet. WHY?!?!?! It is an insult to everything dragonlance! You will be much more satisfied with this book if you read the disappointing "Wanna Bet?" first, then read the rest afterwards, which should make up for Wanna Bet's stupidity. My favorite story was the Wizard's Spectacles. Absolutely great writing! I loved the way they talked about Dalamar through the eyes of two people with barely any brains. Absoultely loved it! Possibly because I have always wanted to know a little bit more about Dalamar's past, instead of him just showing up to learn/spy on Raistlin. He is a great charactor, but he comes in to abruptly. The rest of the stories were good as well, and if it werent for wanna bet, i would have given this book 5 stars.

Diet schemes come and go. Successful plans, backed by powerful media machines, become bestsellers with sequels and food-product lines. But with so many diet books on the market, how do you decide which plan is right for you? According to Peter D'Adamo, the answer depends on your blood type. In his first book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, D'Adamo, a naturopathic physician and researcher, makes interesting and unique connections between human evolution, blood type, diet, exercise, and health. Now, in Cook Right 4 Your Type: The Practical Kitchen Companion to Eat Right 4 Your Type, D'Adamo provides readers with:
- Road maps and charts for each of the four blood types, detailing which foods and beverages to consume and which to avoid
- Tips for starting and sticking with the diet and matching your menu to your blood type
- Thirty-day meal plans to help you stay healthy, live longer, and achieve your ideal weight
- More than 200 healthy and easy recipes keyed to blood type
While D'Adamo's theories challenge common nutrition wisdom and his diet can be difficult to follow, Cook Right 4 Your Type will make his advice a little easier to swallow. --Ellen Albertson

Customer Reviews:
Great Guidance.......2007-10-08
This is an excellent source if you are new to eating right for your blood type. Handy food charts identify which foods are beneficial, neutral or bad for your body. Also, there are suggested 30 day menus plans as well as suggestions about exercise plans for each blood type. Advice is practical such as fresh veggies are best but if cannot buy fresh, buy frozen and not canned...recipes are simple and turn out delicious...they range from meats to pasta/pizza, soups, salads, dressings/sauces,frittatas, to snacks, treats and munchies. If you have bought Dr. D'Adamo's book "Eat Right For Your Type", this companion book, "Cook Right For Your Type" is a must.
Great book.......2007-07-12
I am really enjoying this book, its helpful because not everyone in my family has the same blood type. This book is easy to use. My only grip about it is that sometimes on the thirty day meal plans, the recipes are not listed in the book. I also do not like the fact that on the meal plans they do not have the page numbers on where to find the recipes. Other than that I really enjoy the eating right for you type books and highly recommend them to everyone.
Eat Right 4 Your Type.......2007-05-26
Intriguing book, very well written, holds your interest. Everything explained so that you can understand it. Borrowed it from a relative and then bought it for myself to refer to and read again. Bought one for my son, too. Am reccommending to people I work with.
blood type diet.......2007-05-13
If you buy into the possibilities, it can be beneficial. Both my husband and I have felt better since trying to follow this. I can't say any real weight loss, but definitely feel much better!
good guide.......2007-04-11
This cookbook gives a lot of ideas for cooking by blood type. I have not read the original book but if i had to choose between the two, this book gives plenty of tools to get started.
Customer Reviews:
Cowboy Cocktails.......2007-02-21
Want some really good drink recipes? Try this book, especially if you like Tequila. I suppose other liquor could be substituted for tequila in some of the recipes. But hey, this IS a book written by a Texan. And they do drink a lot of tequila in the "Wild West". Buy it with his "Cowboy in the Kitchen".
Fun and Handy!.......2007-01-09
The book is full of fun short stories, great food and beverage recipes (easy ones and tougher ones), and entertaining song suggestions. For the low price, it's worth it, especially if you're an entertainer and like to experiment with new ideas. Keep it handy and you'll find a new recipe each time you open it!
Cowboy Coctails Rides High!!.......2005-10-25
I picked up this book to help me out with my menus at a number of "Dude Ranches" I'm the F&B for. This and Grady Spears' other books are going to become required reading for my staff. Theyr'e not only great recipes, they have some great Texas tales and tid bits with a bit of cowboy humor added. Great Stuff!
FUNNY.............2001-07-21
Some fancy names for "western drinks". Living out West I ship this book to friends and family on the East coast just for laughs. They inevitably call me and tell me they just made themselves a "Purple Jesus" or a "Cactus-Rita". It's a funny bar book, if you're not much for hard liquor there are a few food recipes, but it's mostly a drink guide.
GRADY SPEARS HAS DONE IT AGAIN!.......2000-06-11
After writing his masterpeice, A Cowboy In The Kitchen, Grady has given us a book of savory cocktails to wash down his cowboy cuisine!
The Reata Rita is the best margarita I have ever had! And I can't wait to try the Sonora Sangria! Grady has even selected listening music for each beverage. You might try the Texas Lemonade if you're a Pat Green fan!
This book is a must have for any hard-core drinker!

Customer Reviews:
new pup.......2007-04-11
not really what I expected from the book. I could have used a few more prior reviews to let me know that I was actually looking for a book with more information on raising puppies and nuances inherit to this breed of dog. Good book for a true overall picture of the breed, but to much other non-essential information tossed in
Great introduction to RR's.......2006-03-23
I enjoyed this book to learn the history and concerns of RR's. It is a very good introductory book. The author is professional about the breed. I recommend this book to anyone considering a RR or just getting one.
General knowledge.......2004-07-09
I thought the first 6 chapters of the book were good, the first few great. However as you progress through the book the knowledge it presents is geared towards all dogs, to a point where I don't think that a RR was mentioned in the final few chapters, it was general knowledge about dogs.
A Wonderful Book written about my FAVORITE breed!.......2000-05-19
I have owned one Ridgeback who passed away a year and a half ago, and now currently own my 2nd. I have several other books about the breed and really enjoyed Eileen's book the best. It does repeat some of the info I have in other books, such as the history of the breed and breed standard, but lets face it any book on the breed MUST contain those topics. But in some of my other Ridgeback books they seem to either cover a lot of info that is geared towards dogs in general or they tended to cover a lot of information on show dogs throughout the world. But in this book I found the topics to be more unique to our breed & very informative and entertaining. The author goes into details of her own experiences with some of the topics, like sighting examples of her dogs' sense of humor, how they have amused themselves when left alone, how she has trained her dogs for obedience competition etc. etc. AND that is just in the third chapter of the book! The endless pictures she includes in her book are beautiful as well. I just loved this book!
The Greatest Breed Ever.......2000-04-18
This is a great book that introduces the reader to the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed. I found the book to be very helpful and insightful. My wife and I just got a puppy and this book has helped us out with him. We know what to expect from him which is extremely helpful with his training. It has also made us aware of the importance of vaccines and other medical emergencies that can occur and the proper way to handle them. The book is not an in depth technical look at the breed, but an overview of how great these dogs can be to a family, which is why it is so enjoyable. I thought the history of the breed was facinating, along with the descriptions on how gentle ridgebacks are to humans. The author also has a Q & A that is helpful and intersting. These insights really help the reader to familize themselves with these dogs. Also, the pictures were fantastic, they really provide a good look at numerous Ridgebacks and show the beauty of these dogs. If you are thinking about getting a Ridgeback or want an overview of the breed, this book is for you.

This pistol is widely misunderstood, and most of the published material about it has been inaccurate. A new, comprehensive survey of surviving examples has established the true production history of the M1905, complete with all its variations and design changes. Serial number lists and information is included. Text is illustrated with clear, large b&w photographs. Also included is a guide to the Colt M1907 automatic, and a complete facsimile copy of the Thompson-LaGarde Report.
Customer Reviews:
The Colt Model 1905 Automatic Pistol.......2006-09-23
I highly recommend this book as the definitive source on the Colt 1905 and 1905/07. Although the type itself saw limited production, its developement history and impact is a necessary adjunct to understanding and appreciating the Colt 1911 Automatic for which it was the precusor and also the bridge from the 1900/1902 .38 models which started it all.
With only a little over 6,000 produced, the elegant 1905's are hard to find, but after reading this book you are going to start looking for one. I had already found mine, and before the book I was totally ignorant of the details concerning this type...with this book I now know not only the Id of the man who inspected it but also the man who assembled it. And that is just the beginning...even within this low production there are variations that we collectors just love to study. Many thanks to Mr. Potocki for this excellent work and deepening my appreciation for this
early automatic pistol.
Author's objectives.......2000-07-24
When I wrote this book it was intended for the Colt and automatic pistol collector. The main objectives were to provide the collector with the factual information about the variations of the pistol and provide a guide for helping the collector identify all of the pistol's variations.
There is a limited amount of color and background but there is a maximum amount of detail as to physical changes in the pistol during its' production years. For example, most assume that there were two hammers used in the production models; there were four and they are identified.
The correct boxed amunition for these pistols is also identified and described.
If you collect automatic pistols and if you want to insure that the M1905 you are considering is correct, this book is for you. It should be noted that in many cases this information does not jibe with what is currently in print, but it is accurate as per surviving models that were surveyed for the factual information in the book.
Most previous information about the M1905 has been in error, our intent was to correct the errors with facts.

Book Description
This highly interesting book studies the cultural context of modernisation of middle-class Muslim women in late 19th- and 20th-century Bengal. Its frames of reference are the Bengal 'Awakening', the Reform Movements -- Brahmo/Hindi and Muslim -- and the Women's Question as articulated in material and ideological terms throughout the period. Tracing the emergence of the modern Muslim gentlewomen, the bhadramahila, starting in 1876 when Nawab Faizunnesa Chaudhurani published her first book and ending with the foundation in 1939 of The Lady Brabourne College, the book gives an excellent analysis of the rise of a Muslim woman's public sphere and broadens our knowledge of Bengali social history in the colonial period.

Book Description
An internationally acclaimed painter, Howard Hodgkin is also a major and highly original maker of prints. This is the first ever comprehensive survey and catalogue raisonné of Hodgkin's printsmore than 140 works made since 1953.
An interview with the artist reveals his attitudes toward printmaking as an altogether different process from painting: neither medium is used to imitate the other, nor do they reflect on each other. Compared to the rich, condensed intensity of the paintings, his prints have a broad, expansive quality. Hodgkin's working methods are also discussed. He never collaborates in the actual printing process himself, but gives very detailed instructions: his interest is primarily in the decisions that lead to the production of a mark, not in the act of making that mark.
Essays by Liesbeth Heenk, a print expert who works for Sotheby's in Holland and Nan Rosenthal, Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, shed light on the prints, their genesis and development, and on the artist's innovative working habits and his ideas about printmaking. A fully illustrated catalogue raisonné, a chronology, an extensive bibliography, and a list of solo and group exhibitions complete this definitive publication. 202 illustrations in color and duotone.

Book Description
Now in trade paperback with a Reader's Guide inside: A "compelling...guided tour through the underground youth culture in Tehran...an illuminating book." (The New York Times)
A favorite of readers and critics nationwide, Lipstick Jihad is now available in the format most likely to appeal to its natural market-and it now includes a wealth of new material to interest readers and reading groups. Azadeh Moaveni was born in Palo Alto, California, into the lap of an Iranian diaspora community longing for an Iran many thousands of miles away. As far back as she can remember she felt at odds with her tangled identity. College magnified the clash between Iran and America, and after graduating, she moved to Tehran as a journalist. Immediately, Azadeh's exile fantasies dissolved.
Azadeh finds a country that is culturally confused, politically deadlocked, and emotionally anguished. In order to unlock the fundamental mystery of Iran-how nothing perceptibly alters, but everything changes--she must delve deep into Tehran's edgy underground. Lipstick Jihad is a rare portrait of Tehran, populated by a cast of young people whose exuberance and despair bring the modern reality of Iran to vivid life. Azadeh also reveals her private struggle to build a life in a dark country--the struggle of a young woman of the diaspora, searching for a homeland that may not exist.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but not captivating.......2007-07-06
Azadeh Moaveni's "Lipstick Jihad" is interesting and well-written, but not captivating. Much of the criticism from other reviewers revolves around her well-to-do social status and her focus on the young, upper- and middle-class generation with which she seems to have spent her time. Is this an "authentic" description of contemporary Iran? Were this a work of journalism, this critique might be valid, for the book is fully absorbed in the Islamic Republic-style perversions of the otherwise recognizable drama of being a young adult. And one can hardly charge her with misleading the reader on this account, as I can't think of a more apt description of this book's focus than the subtitle itself: "A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America and American in Iran."
The appropriate question to ask is not what the subject of her book is, but how well she has captured it. It is for this that I only give three stars. She rides from interesting anecdote to interesting anecdote, and when discussing her sense of being suspended between Iranian and American identities she can really shine. But her attempts to draw perspective often left me skeptical. She's fully capable of viewing her environment critically, but I'm not convinced she ever transcended it, looked back and encapsulated it for her audience.
When I finished each chapter I was not compelled to start the next and only rarely found myself lost in its pages. I am glad I read the book, and learned much about the political and social dimensions of life in contemporary Iran. But a memoirist's role is larger - even, in some ways, dishonest. For a memoir must universalize the personal, must order and narrate a life that rarely comes with either. In Moaveni's abstraction of her experience she only puts forward an interesting read, not a great one.
Interesting, but somewhat narrow in outlook.......2007-06-09
I enjoyed this book and found it somewhat enlightening about Iran and it was interesting to read how the younger set manages to socialize despite the constant repression by their government. Before going to Iran to live for a time, the author has an idyllic remembrance of a visit there, coupled with the reminicenses of her family. Once she gets there she gets an education of what it's like to live in a society that is in no way free and is governed by religious fanatics.
I was annoyed that she still felt so torn throughout the book - she wanted Iran to be so different, and seemed to consider herself Iranian, never once acknowledging her great good fortune of having been born an American. She never mentioned an appreciation for America, only yearning for a better Iran so she could stay there, and ultimately went to live in Beirut but doesn't say why. She could not have a fulfilled life in America?
Another thing that bothered me was the narrow perspective. She wrote about how the people she socialized with didn't care at all about Islam and weren't religious, thus giving the impression that the only religious fanatics in Iran are the people running the government. She seemed to think that if Iran could go back to a secular government that Islam would no longer be a problem for Iranians. Also I would have liked more depth pertaining to the problems women experience in this type of environment.
vividly forgettable.......2007-05-25
I have no business writing this review, for I read Moaveni's "Lipstick Jihad" over eight months ago, and can recall little about it.
Then why, you may ask, are you writing a review? If you can remember nothing about the characters sketched, the episodes related, the lessons learned, the style employed, etc. -- if none of these things has stuck in your mind, what could you possibly have to say about the book?
My point exactly.
One Woman's Story.......2007-04-21
So many of the reviews I've read focus on the author's upper-middle class status or her secularism as if these things make her less Iranian and therefore less suitable to write a book about being Iranian. Let us not forget that this book is a memoir, it is one woman's story of living in Iran but never really feeling like an Iranian. It's not a history book nor is it political commentary, though it does delve into both subjects. It is, however, an incredibly honest depiction of an American-born journalist's life in Iran during Khatami's presidency.
I know the reason I loved this book so much is because of all the parallels I can draw between the author's life and my own. "Lipstick Jihad" is the book I would write if I ever had the opportunity. It's almost eerie reading someone else's words all the while thinking they could be your own. No book, no picture, no film has ever made me ache for Iran like this book has. And I know this book won't and can't affect everyone the way it has me, but it is definitely worth reading to find out.
An excellent cultural study.......2007-03-31
I dare say that Azadeh Moaveni's book "Lipstick Jihad" will enter into the classics of cultural studies. Unlike its derisive title, the book is probably one of the most insightful of its kind. Moaveni is no doubt a skillful writer, and to have been able to write with such wisdom and clarity at such young age smacks of brilliance. As a diasporic Iranian living in the US for the past thirty years, I resonate to her work in absolute understanding, sentence by sentence, although I belong to her father's generation. Moaveni manages to trespass boundaries and generations. There are so many great statements in the book that it could be called a book of proverbs. My favorites? I found statements on every page that bedazzled me with her wit, satire, bitterness, sarcasm, and perceptiveness. Here are a few:
On fatwa against poodles: "Iranians felt a harsh contempt for the clerics, who had taken over an oil-rich country in the name of Islam, sunk its economy, and now spent their days railing against poodles."
On the difference between expressing herself in Farsi and English: "I tried to explain, dismayed to see notions like "I need space" evaporate into meaninglessness in Farsi. It was as though the soft, soap-opera lighting of English had been witched off, and replaced by harsh, fluorescent glare of Farsi."
About her favorite caf in Tehran: "It was the only caf in Tehran designed with innovative elegance and attracted young people starved for aesthetic beauty - the artists, writers, and musicians whose sensibilities suffered acutely in a city draped with grim billboards of war martyrs."
On the prohibition of mingling of genders, and its results for Islamization of the Iranian society: "The Tehran of the revolution was one of the most sexualized milieus I had ever encountered...the constant exposure to covered flesh brought to mind, well, flesh."
On the harassment of women by men for their lack of proper Islamic attire: "This is how the regime eased its burden of repression: by conditioning people to police one another. If you had conducted a national referendum that very day, the vast majority of Iranians - men and women alike - would have voted to abolish the mandatory veil. But accustomed to being watched in public, people internalized the minding gaze of the regime, and turned it back outward. "
About the Iranian culture: "Here is [a] culture liberal with affection but stingy with tolerance."
