This book gives us a little more information into the lives of Stone and Dino when they were police partners. It still takes both of them working together to catch the killer.

Top notch writer Stuart Woods keeps the reader spell bound with the curves and twists of this intriguing thriller, "Worst Fears Realized." Stone Barrington and his ex-partner, Dino Bacchetti, fight to find a relentless killer before he eliminates all the people who are close to them. They have their chief suspect but he is in prison when the first murders occur.
Stone has a new lady of the night, Eduardo Bianchi's,a Mob dean, daughter who is the younger sister of Dino's wife.
Sparks fly when Arrington Carter Calder, Stone's long time love, meets up with Dolce Bianchi, who is on the hunt for a husband and won't take no for an answer.

A serious page turner - I couldn't put it down.......2006-04-14
I read this book in an afternoon - about 4 hours. I literally could not stop turning the pages. This was an absolutely RIVETING chapter in Stone Barrington's life; suspenseful, horrifying and at the same time it sets up a lot of the ground floor for his future as well (the house in CT, his car, etc.). My ONLY complaint (and BOY is it a doozy) is that for some strange reason between the end of the last book (Swimming to Catalina) and the beginning of this book, Stuart Woods apparently got a bug up his butt and decided to change the gender of Vance and Arrington's child for some reason - at the end of the previous book, Arrington called Stone and said she had just had a baby girl, and suddenly in this book, they have a boy. It annoys me when a writer changes continuity like that for no reason.
At any rate, when the book opens, Stone is pining for Arrington and Dino is trying to cheer him up by taking him to a party, where he meets a lovely young woman, who takes him to her place - and they order Chinese food. Unfortunately, the Chinese place cannot deliver, so he must go pick up the food. When he returns, he finds her dead, her throat slit wide open. Things spiral down from there as people first he knows, then Dino knows, are murdered or attacked. Stone and Dino find themselves racing against the clock to try to figure out who is behind this before the next killing - or before Stone himself is fingered for the first murder.
Although the killer (for most of the murders) becomes quite obvious about half-way through the book, it still remains taut as they try to catch him and still remain out of his reach, and there still remains the matter of the first murder and who did that. This is a pleasing work from a great writer. I look forward to the next installment - LA Dead.

It is not that bad, it even has a couple of fine and unexpected twists in the plot. It would deserve three stars, but there are way too many nauseating sex scenes.

while not as good as dirt, LA dead or dead in the water, this is still a really good read for anybody who's a fan of stuart woods, stone barrington, or this particular genre of book...
the return of some familiar faces, some new faces...the sense of continuity in this series is really part of the draw...the events from previous books usually aren't forgotten...but the subsequent books aren't bogged down in exposition of earlier events either...a mention here, a mention there...sometimes you'll find yourself saying 'ohhh, I remember that now!'..
the way in which he ends these books makes you look forward to the next installment as well...they flow pretty seamlessly from one to the next..this is no exception

This book is good for diplomacy and marraige fanatics, but for a BattleTech 'Mech jock like me there is just too much cuddling. Instead of inviting Maxamillian Laio to the "wedding" (and soon to be declaration of war), I would of brought the Davion Assault Gaurds to Sian and killed the son of a gun!!!

Stackpole's Best.......1998-05-12
This book series was first released in the 80s. It's story revolves around war in the 31st century, but manages to avoid being about the "Mechs" or high-tech devices. Instead it is a story about people and governments. The Warrior series is not hard science fiction, but it is good science fiction, and I believe that FASA can thank this series for the success they've had since the original release.
The book that started it all.......1998-03-28
I read this book and instantly became a Battletech fan when it first came out under a different publisher in 1988. I have since reread the trilogy numerous times. I liked it because it was well written and well put together (+ I have since become a fan of Mr. Stackpole).
Since the books have been out of print and almost impossible to come by, most of you have picked up the story line with the Lethal Heritage trilogy, thus leaving many of you with the question of how did this all start or who are these people.
Well this series will answer most if not all of your questions. Taking place 25 years prior to the Clan invasion (old technology and classic mechs) you are introduced to who the characters are. You discover what the relationships (friendly and hostile)between the houses were like and why. You also discover why the animosity exists between all the houses and ComStar.
This book as well as the next two are must reading for any fan of the entire Battletech series. Well written and easy to read and follow you won't want to put it down.

An Amazing Book.......2007-09-19
I cannot begin to express what a help this book and its program have been. I was mired in grief over losses going back into childhood, and absolutely devastated by a recent one which prompted me to order the book in the first place. This isn't something you just read. To affect a genuine recovery from grief you have to be willing to DO what the authors guide you to do, but it's absolutely worth the effort. Following through with the program doesn't cost a thing and can be done in the comfort of your own easychair. All you need is a pen or pencil and a few sheets of paper (a legal pad would be helpful but isn't necessary). I heartily recommend this to anyone who has suffered a loss, recently or in the past. It's a lifelong program that will help a person recover from loss, not just wait for time to heal (it doesn't!) or go around the loss by sticking it on an emotional shelf and forgetting it. An absolute must for anyone who really wants to RECOVER from a loss!

I was so impressed with this program that I got certified to facilitate it. It is a tool that can be used again and again as we hurdle the situations in life that might stop us in our tracks. If you are stuck in your grief, or are having trouble moving through a loss in your life,whether it be divorce or any other stress inducing change I highly recommend this book as well as the Grief Recovery Outreach Programs.

I read the earlier edition of this book, which deals with death only, and not other losses. I found it fascinating enough that I may try working through the steps outlined with a partner. Yet, I agree with some of the reviewers who feel that all these steps and the graphing of the highs and lows in a relationship may not be what is needed. I lost my husband of 30 years following a 2 1/2 year struggle with cancer, and I don't think regrets are a part of my grief. I miss him, and always will, even though I will eventually move on with my life. I'm not sure there is any such thing as recovery from the loss of one's life partner. There have been other deaths in my life: of parents, a stepchild, friends and lovers, but losing the person with whom I've shared every day (except for a few absences) is something I've never before experienced. I do agree with the premise of the book that our society just doesn't accept loss and grief, and doesn't know how to deal with it, other than to ignore it, or encourage people to get over it, or replace whatever or whomever has been lost. The book did strike me as highly prescriptive, and I can understand that this may bother some. I have done graphing of highs and lows in life in other contexts, however, and found it quite illuminating. So, I am willing to give this a try.

This book is a great book for those who are grieving any type of loss. I recently lost my husband, and this book offered me insights into the grieving process and how to move beyond it.

This book is an excellent resource for those who are grieving any kind of loss. It provides an action plan that is gentle and provides direction during a difficult, confusing and often disorienting time. I have used this resource with my clients and I know many other therapists who regard it highly and use it in their practices. If you get this, I would also recommend the classic On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss. After a big loss of any kind, I think it is very important to take action, but also make sense of the loss. Both resources I mention in this review will help with making meaning out of the loss and getting reoriented.

This is a wonderful hnadbook, but the title leaves many potential beneficiaries to wrongly look elsewhere. Whether you are a recovering alcoholic, former guardian of a missing cat or dog, or have simply had many losses in your life, this handbook is a marvel. The answer is, of course not! But, if I hadn't gotten this book, I would not have known. There's a recipe for rice cooker apple juice oatmeal, which my family just loves. Tastes like dessert. There's all kinds of steamed vegetables, with times and how to cook. Other grains recipes. Delicious rice recipes. If you're getting a rice cooker, I'd suggest you get this book.

The description of this book should have said something about what size rice cooker all the recipes are for. Once I started reading the book, I discovered all the recipes are made for an 8-10 cup cooker. I would not have purchased the book if I had known this. I bought a 3-cup cooker when I bought this book, and I can't figure out how to scale down the recipes to fit in my cooker. So, the book is basically useless to me.

This book is nothing compared to Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann book. This one leans more towards convenience but most of the recipes in here you can find in other variations online. There is nothing inventive about it. Beware, this book is a barely updated version of Simmon's other book "Versatile Rice Cooker". I bought both thinking they were different, but they are almost exactly the same.

I purchased this book expecting general information and training help. This book is largely made for show purposes. It has no useful information except if you want to breed and show the dog. I would not recommend the book for people wanting to know more about their Shiba Inu or wanting a training guide.
My favorite Shiba Book!.......2007-01-04
Of all of the breed-specific books I've read that discuss Shiba Inus, this book is my hands-down favorite. It gives a thorough history of the breed, a detailed explanation of the breed's standard, a good chapter of advice on choosing and raising a Shiba puppy, and one of the most helpful and informative chapters I've read on breeding anywhere.
That said, I have to agree with those who wrote that it's not the book for everyone. The Total Shiba is geared more toward breeders than toward prospective buyers and enthusiasts. The content is breeding-focused and it lacks color photographs. Enthusiasts would enjoy the Complete Owner's Guide or the Kennel Club book more, as both are filled with beautiful pictures and content more geared toward their interests.

This wonderful book has all the info one should know about shibas together with fantastic BW pictures.
It is complete, clear and totally focused on shibas, not on dog puppies but on shiba puppies!

This book was interesting, historically, and if you are thiking about showing a Shiba. But if you just bought a Shiba, it gives you little details. I would recommend it for a coffee table book, but not if you are looking for details on your puppy and training advice unique to Shibas.
A Necessary Reference Book for the Shiba Owner.......2002-05-10
This is my favorite Shiba book. I have been involved in the breed since 1987 and this book (to me) is a culmination of the years of knowledge and experience I had to glean by hanging out with the best. It has almost everything that a person would want to know about the Shiba Inu. The authors are highly knowlegeable and have been involved in the breed since before 1986. Fred Lanting, world renowned judge and Shiba Breeder, gives this book a glowing review...he calls it; concise, constructive,accurate, and comprehensive.In the back of the book are over 100 photos of the Shibas that were the foundation of the Shibas in America today. Many of the Shibas in Shibumi Shiba Inu's pedigrees are pictured there. I wish this book had been available in 1987.

Firstly, the first review of this book on this page is by Goodloe Suttler who is actually acknowleged in the book so should have mentioned this in his review, unless this is a stunning coincidence.
However, his review is correct. This book extends the previous version (A New American TQM) and adds valuable new material. I found A New American TQM was in my top 5 Quality Books list - an excellent read. Four Practical Revolutions takes its place.
Highly recommended for its practical advice and comprehensive coverage of all aspects of quality improvement.

The success or failure of the design process depends on the organization within which it is embedded. An individual or group may bear the title "designer," but design responsibility is located in a team. Design teams include managers whose responsibilities cut across and link the comprehensive range of functions in an organization. These range from sourcing, supply, engineering, and operations, to logistics, marketing, and customer service. They may even include finance or advertising. Successful designers participate in a managerial process and understanding the flow of work through an industrial organization is the key to successful design.
This book offers a structured overview of a total design process. The process identifies and solves problems to create or improve goods and services. The total design process incorporates and transcends the limited process of designing a functional artifact or service. Shiba and Walden address the challenge of shaping organizational knowledge, skill, and behavior to account for the total design process. This necessarily includes designing the systems that implement design. This is a managerial task, and this book addresses design process from a managerial and engineering perspective.
The book is divided into five parts. The first considers the evolution of business and the way that organizations today must work to meet social needs. The next four sections address the four practical revolutions that make this possible. These are customer focus, continuous improvement, total participation, and societal networking. The authors operationalize the four revolutions through specific tools and useful approaches. They give careful, effective descriptions of dozens of methods for management, problem solving, and skills development.
Specific tools and approaches described here include the 7-step reactive approach to problem solving, the 9-step project planning method, and the Hoshin Management system, along with strategies and tactics for specific applications. The approach is methodically pluralist and action-oriented, supported by a rich series of case studies and a 315-item bibliography.
This book is highly recommended. It should be in every design school library.

This book has provided a very practical TQM framework, both for the concepts and the implementation. The book very well describes how to adopt and practise the Customer Focus concept, a component of TQM, by using well explained standard steps and real world examples. The best thing about this book, however, is that it has been written with the very common English so that it is not too difficult to understand by those using English as their second language.

Double knitting is one of those fascinating knitting tricks. Two needles can create a tube with some chicanery involving slip stitches. In a way it's simple, slip every other stitch and work it on the return row, slipping the knit stitches. Lo, a tube is formed.
The late Bev Royce was a minor genius, figuring out how to do this on her own and then her notes were transcribed after her death for the benefit of all. Some of this is hard to understand; there are new types of cast-ons to avoid a ridge, and increasing (to make a toe of a sock, for example) is not so simple. Still, with perseverance, you might be able to make the toy pony on the cover, quite an achievement in knitting.

My only quibble with this book is that I didn't find out about it earlier. When I first started to seriously pursue knitting ten years ago, a passing comment on Usenet (from someone who had probably read this book already) alerted me that it was possible to knit seamless tubes without resorting to "weird" needles (circular or double-pointed), using ordinary single-pointed needles instead.
Gradually, I pursued this idea and elaborated on it. Finally, when discussing some of the concepts earlier this year, someone said, "Look, go buy this book. It'll tell you all about it." Whereupon I get it from Amazon only to discover that I've independently worked out most of the concepts on my own. Argh.
But the basic charm of Royce's approach remains. This book will tell you how to knit sleeves, hats, and gloves on single-pointed needles; it also expands the concept to circular needles so you can knit two tubes at the same time (frex a simultaneous pair of socks-- I was in the middle of knitting a Klein bottle hat with the same approach when the book arrived). And it has instructions for a charming (and seamless!) three-dimensional pony.
All right, I'll admit to another half-quibble. Royce defaults to singly-alternating halves of a project, whether sides of a tube or individual pieces being worked in parallel, and notes that ribbing and other non-stockinette patterns can be difficult in double-knitting. But the difficulty drops back down if the stitches are alternated in small groups-- if the pattern repeats in blocks of four or five stitches, then alternate the halves in blocks of four or five. But that's a minor complaint about a major work in the field.
All right, this book may not be everyone's bag; sure, if you've got "weird" needles already and are familiar with them (which I am now), there's probably not much reason to switch over to the double-knitting approach. But for pure conceptual neatness, this is definitely the coolest knitting book I own.

A Wondrous World in Black and White.......2007-05-19
Dore's engravings are so detailed that I am continually asking myself how he could have conjured up such imaginative images using only shades of gray.
If you like black-and-white engravings, get "A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought," by David Allen Williams. This book is full of rare 19th century engravings that match its quotations from the Humanist perspective--a beautiful art book that has been overlooked because of its title.

All but one originally published in the New Yorker, these profiles work together to create a striking collective biography of the 20th-century African-American male in all his diversity. Figures as different as Harry Belafonte and Colin Powell get equally perceptive treatment, though the essays on writer Albert Murray and literary critic Anatole Broyard (who passed for white) are particularly fine. This book will challenge you to look at men who have been instumental politically and educationally in America. You may not close the book liking them all and probably won't agree with everything they said or did, but you will go away with more knowledge and understanding of their positions.
Masterful.......2006-12-27
Gates is a master of his craft; his writing is original, insightful and is of the whole cloth-- weaving visual images with literary allusions and references to the person that render all of what we might rightly know of a visible self. The portraits are intellectually rich and intellectually satisfying. His rendition of the crack in Jesse Jackson's reaction to Colin Powell-- which only comes out in private, is absolutely magical and priceless for the emotional nuance it conveys (in a loving and hilarious style). Like an exquisite and rare gourmet meal for the mind, one wants these profiles never to end for the knowledge and reality that they impart.
A Fine Collection of Profiles.......2004-03-01
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. masterfully profiles eight black men in this collection of his New Yorker essays. He writes in a bluesy, artistic style and has the ability to get quotes from these men that any other journalist would fail to do. The men intimately discuss the tragedies and successes of their lives. The stories of these men details their ascent and depicts the world around them. Gates daringly portrays O.J. Simpson and the infamous trial and Louis Farrakhan, the outspoken leader of the nation of Islam. The other men profiled are James Baldwin, Albert Murray, Bill T. Jones, Colin Powell, Harry Belafonte, and Anatole Broyard. Each of their lives have distinct differences, but it is also interesting to find the areas where they overlap.
The portraits of Powell and Farrakhan stand out the most to me as Gates sheds light on the stories behind the men that we rarely see. I recommend this book for its intriguing stories, dynamic language, and true concepts of what it means to be a black man in America.
Couldn't put this one down, wonderful.......2001-02-14
Henry Louis Gates must have some magical ability to transcribe someone's personality onto the printed page. I was amazed at the variety of personalities Gates wrote about and how accurately Gates seemed to portray them. My favorites were Anatole Broyard and Colin Powell, but every essay is compelling. Perhaps what I enjoyed most is that Gates had the bravery to write about controversial subjects (like Louis Farrakhan and O.J. Simpson, though an entire essay was not dedicated to the latter). I recommend this book highly. Fans of this book would also enjoy Cornel West's Race Matters.
Gates should have excluded Anatole Broyard from this book........1998-11-16
Gates should have excluded the late Anatole Broyard from this book. Broyard was certainly not a "black" man. He looked white, identified as such, and his choice should be respected. Broyard's memory should not be subjected to "ethnic rape."
