Book Description
Robert Eversz's edgy and endearing heroine Nina Zero is back...and this time she's embroiled in her most dangerous case ever -- investigating L.A.'s underground S&M scene while getting caught up in sex, lies, and babysitting.
It's opening night of Nina Zero's first gallery show, and her staged photographs of Hollywood pulp scenes are attracting the interest of actual art connoisseurs, not just the usual gossip rag readership. But the excitement of the evening shifts to alarm when Nina receives an anonymous package containing an amateur bondage video that may have ended in death. As she and her editor at Scandal Times watch the rape and strangling of a young woman, Nina Zero recognizes a distinctive tattoo on the woman's right shoulder, and suddenly realizes why one of her models has missed the opening.
Who sent the tape? And more important, what happened to the woman? Nina starts investigating her model and discovers a parallel life of S&M phone sex, blogs written in code, an illicit relationship with a celebrity hypnotherapist, and ties to the son of a billionaire film director. Her Scandal Times coverage of the case enrages the LAPD and attracts death threats from anonymous sources. Luckily, Nina has her trusted (but toothless) Rottweiler by her side, as well as a sexy but mysterious detective who keeps landing in her bed. Just when events begin to spin from her control, Nina's deeply dysfunctional family enters the fray, making life even more complicated for this ex-con with a soft heart and a chip on her shoulder.
Set in a vividly sunny and sinister Los Angeles, Zero to the Bone is the best (and sexiest) Nina Zero novel yet.

LA Gothic!.......2006-04-18
Nina Zero is an artist-excon whose violent child hood has turned her into a woman who uses violence to solve her problems. The lack of impulse control seems hereditary as her father and her niece's lack of foresight plummet her into as much trouble as her own ill-considered decisions. While Nina serves the cause of truth in her role as a scandal rag photographer, she is unscrupulous in her methods.
Despite this Nina is a sympathetic character who one wishes would stay out of trouble. Unfortunately her proclivity for unprotected sex and assaulting people with weapons makes her prone to trouble.
The backdrop for Nina's escapades is the art scene and porn industry in Los Angeles. Eversz prose is superior; but he gets a little flamboyant in plot creation.

I read a review of this book in some publication, and as it sounded like the sort of thing I might like I requested it from my local library. While I waited for it to become available, I pulled out a different Nina Zero novel (Burning Garbo) and read that. I realized that I liked the author's writing so much that I went back to the beginning, found all of the Nina Zero novels and read the series start to finish (Zero to the Bone being the latest.) They were all well worth a read.
If you like mystery/crime fiction with strong female protagonists you will like Nina. Her life as a kid was a very tough one. It has not gotten easier as an adult. She is a papparaza who repeatedly finds herself embroiled in various crimes and misdemeanors as part of her job. That's all I'll give away. You need to read it yourself. She is an engaging character and I consider Eversz a very fine discovery, indeed. I'll be anxiously awaiting his next Nina Zero book.
"I tracked people for a living, if celebrities can be called people and photographing them a living." .......2006-03-07
"Zero to the Bone" was my introduction to Mary Alice Baker a.k.a. Nina Zero, the savvy, sexy, complex protagonist of author Robert Eversz's mystery series, ("Shooting Elvis," Digging James Dean"). Ms Zero, in this her fifth outing, is a paparazzi for LA's ignominious tabloid, The Scandal Times, and an ex-con out on parole. She solves murder cases as a hobby. Unfortunately, as with many series novels, there are numerous references to the protagonist's past. In "Zero to the Bone," the author alludes to so many incidents in Nina's earlier life, from prior works, that even though he includes some background information, I really felt left out - like I should go back and read books one through four to thoroughly understand the heroine and this particular plot. I enjoyed Nina as a character, (we bonded), but not the storyline. However, Mr. Eversz has my attention and I am now curious enough to read more Nina novels, but that's not the point...right? "Zero to the Bones" should stand alone, unless the reader is informed otherwise. I do not think it fulfills its promise.
Our story opens with Nina's debut as an artiste. She obviously has talent and is showing her very original photographs at the upscale Leonora Price Gallery in Santa Monica. The photos are "staged tableaux carefully composed to look culled from the pages of the National Enquirer" - in other words, arty Hollywood pulp! Her two main models, blonde, wholesome looking Christine, and Nephthys, a kind of "punk Barbara Stanwyck type," are scheduled to accompany her to the opening, along with her trusty bodyguard The Rott, a toothless but formidable Rottweiler, and teenage niece Cassie. A plus - the crowd likes the work. Even her parole officer appreciates it. A few sales are made, and a potential romance surfaces in the form of handsome Sean Tyler. Frank, her cohort and editor-in-chief at the Scandal rag introduces them. THE minus - Christine, a friend as well as Nina's model, is a no show...and she promised to attend this important event.
The evening turns into a nightmare when Nina receives an unmarked DVD which turns out to be a snuff film. Christine is the victim, definitely identifiable by the unique Betty Boop tattoo on her shoulder. Shortly afterward, the model's body turns up in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Parole rules forbid sleuthing. They also prohibit Nina's burgeoning association with hunky Sean, who turns out to be a LAPD detective. But rules have never stood in our girl's way and she is determined to find out who murdered her friend. Her investigation takes her to Hollywood's seamiest areas to question the scum who dwell there.
Along with the mystery and associated complications, Nina's abusive father surfaces and details about her dysfunctional family emerge. "His beatings taught me discipline, how to walk quietly and be silent, how to tune into the moods of your opponent and hit him before he hits you or run before he strikes. Above all, he taught me how to watch. I'm a photographer because of him, because of my fear of him."
I was interested in Nina and various other characters to keep reading until the end - not a bad experience. I do get the feel that if I study up on her past through the earlier books in the series, I will appreciate this one more. So, if you are a Nina Zero fan already, you will probably enjoy "Zero To The Bone." If you haven't met her yet, try book number one first!

dark gritty urban noir thriller .......2006-02-25
Ex-con Nina Zero a freelance photographer for the tabloid newspaper the Scandal Times, is realizing a dream by having a showing of her photographs in a respectable gallery. The model she used in the photographs never shows up but Nina thinks Christine is just going to be fashionably late. A CD sent to the newspaper that she never viewed turns out to be a snuff film and her co-worker Frank who watched it brings it to the showing for Nina to see.
The woman who was killed has a tattoo of Betty Boop on her left shoulder just like the Christine has. A hiker stumbles over Christine's body in the Santa Monica Mountains. Both Nina and Frank decide to follow the story. Nina because she cares and would like to find the killer and Frank because he thinks he can gain much mileage from the murder which has all the ingredients for a sensational story including the darkest side of S&M, where one is almost to the point of death. From the dark world that Christine inhabited and enjoyed, the investigation takes them to the corridors of the Hollywood elite where everyone has a price except for Nina.
Robert Eversz is a dark gritty urban noir thriller writer who imbues his characters with the full spectrum of human emotions and reflects that back to the reader who sees them in a disturbing light. The author brings every emotion out of the audience from joy to sorrow and everything in between. Yet this stark novel has its light moments involving Nina's dog Rott and its moving moments (Nina's father trying to reconnect with her). ZERO TO THE BONE is in a class by itself.

Book Description
After the extraordinary social and political upheaval of the 1960s and 70s, African American culture splintered in the post-soul decade of the 1980s. Black entertainers, athletes, politicians, and spiritual leaders enjoyed unprecedented prominence and influence while at the same time drugs and crime ravaged once-vital black neighborhoods. Michael Jordan dominated basketball and Michael Jackson swept the Grammys, but rage and desperation ruled the streets. In this fascinating history, Nelson George, one of the country's leading black cultural critics, chronicles the African American 1980s in all its excess, creativity, and despair.
Sifting through the media, popular music, the arenas of sports and politics, cultural trends, street slang, and the changes that rocked Hollywood, Washington, Wall Street, and Madison Avenue, Post-Soul Nation will further confirm George as one of our most dynamic and original cultural commentators.

Who Takes The Blame?.......2006-08-13
In February, 1969, a study titled "Black-White Contact in Schools: Its Social and Academic Effects" was published by Purdue University sociologist Martin Patchen. In it, he concludes "Available evidence indicates that interracial contact in schools does not have consistent positive effects on students' racial attitudes and behavior or on the academic prformance of minority students." In March, it was declared that the AIDS virus started in Africa and on the Caribbean island, Haita and spread to the United States via tourists. Get this! Susan Sontag decided in 1988 that "the virus was sent to Africa from the U.S. as an act of bacteriological warfare" as a conspiracy.
July, 1985, a survey conducted in New York City using the HIV antibody test finds that of frequent drug users, 87 percent carried the infection. The majority of the addicts were black and Hispanic. In August 1988, on Zachary's birthday, Jean-Michael Basquiat died in New York village of a heroin overdose at the age of 27 (Zach was 26 then). He was a graffiti artist whose pieces sold for $50,000 at the time of his death. There was a lot of debate about his artistic worth.
This book traverses the years 1979 to 1989 in America and is mostly about the singers and groups in the entertainment area but also writers which proliferated during that time. It is the time of affirmative action and Clarence Thomas who was married to a Causcasian woman but courted the office girls and almost lost his nomination. I watched it all on t.v. The girl took all the blame, and she was honest and above-board, blameless. The results of overcompensation has caused much turmoil for us all in America and some are deceitful by trying to pull the wool ober the eyes of political figures to the detriment of everybody.
80's Sampling Shows Deeper Truths.......2004-05-22
"Post-Soul Nation..." samples high profile stories from 1979 to 1989. Each chapter covers one year and opens with a 2-3 page, relatively in depth, summary of an issue. George writes clear and concise, and covers a lot of ground in 2-3 pages. (For example, he guides from Reaganomics to crack in an amazing 1 page... like a sockless Tyson with no BS going straight at you). After each chapter's 2-3 page intro, George writes 1-2 paragraph "sample" mini-stories. Each "sample" is in order by date: A key event from January 22 is followed by February 11, then March 3, etc. The "samples" can rekindle memories of the event -- most were high profile stories at the time. Offhand, I'd say these themes appear most, in descending order; rap/hip hop (from inner cities into the suburbs), politics (black mayors, Jesse, Farrakhan), show business (Spike Lee, Eddie Murphy, Cosby, Oprah etc), writers (female especially), academia, and business.... The bigger personalities and issues (Oprah, Eddie, Aids, crack) are weaved into the mix, appearing at various points from year to year.
In the broadest sense, George replays the big scenes of the 80's, with crisp and flowing language. It may be a sign that this "white boy" (me) found the book almost coincided with my "80's big picture." Add a little new wave music and some Larry Bird :-), and the picture is near complete. This partly reflects George's view that the *big name* African Americans were quite dominant in 80's culture. Another of George's themes is that, under Reaganites, inner city folks were worse off. Two possible theories are: 1)When social services and affirmative action were scaled back, whites accepted black stars more. Like, "Hey, 'they' *earned* it." Or, more likely, as George suggests, 2) major black figures were simply too good to be denied.
George calls the 80's "Post-Soul Nation," meaning the 60's/70's soul-power era was over. (So the 80's is defined for what it *isn't*, its complexity reflected in the book's long title). In short, the book is great for triggering a series of flashbacks.... Then when you put it down, all those samples in your mind start to form a greater whole. Food for thought.

God is able to do above and beyond anything that we could ever think or imagine. All that is required of us is that we believe and trust God, for He is faithful that promised.
Oftentimes, we give up when the circumstances appear contrary to all that we've been hoping and praying. However, the word of God tells us that "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report."
God wants to bless you. He wants to answer your prayers. That's His speciality. However, God wants to know that you will trust Him and depend on Him no matter what it looks like, feels like or sounds like. In spite of the naysayers, in spite of the past, in spite of it all, you will maintain unwavering faith and trust God to bring it to pass. God can and God will.

Intelligent Angel and Demon Tale (B Grade).......2007-10-07
Souls Triumphant is an interesting and mature tale about angels and demons. I found myself pleasantly surprised by Foley's voice because he takes the whole mystical and spiritual aspect of Heaven and Hell and makes it his own. This is a very intellectually written book and it is relies very heavily on dialogue rather than all action.
This book will not be for everyone because the first few chapters are slow moving, but half way through, the action picks up. There are some surprises and a few twists that you won't see coming.
The romance between Joe and Alessandra may seem to be an important part but is more of a catalyst for everything that happens. These two characters seem to be simple college students, but they are much more important as the story moves on.
Also, this is not an easy read because the conversations between the characters can be a bit confusing because what they say is not necessarily what they mean.
For a novice author, S. William Foley has written a book that is not the normal pop culture fluff that is being written. Any fan who is into religion, spirituality and fantasy should pick this book up and loose themselves in the world of good and evil.
Overall, a good solid read.

cured my add for reading.......2007-09-13
I don't really have add, but when it comes to reading books, it takes alot to keep me interested. I'm only on Chapter 6 now, but I am very interested to see where the rest of the book takes me. It's a good sign to me, it's a good book when I wake up thinking about it. I can't wait to finish. Fantastic!!!!!
Fantasy, Romance & More.......2007-05-04
[...]
Souls Triumphant has something for everyone. Part love story, part fantasy adventure, and filled with action. Readers are thrust into the classic dilemma of good vs. evil. However, this is not the tradition tale that has been written many times. Foley has delivered a refreshing and entertaining read for all ages. Adults and teens will finally have something they agree on...... this is a good book!
Love at first sight would prove to be much more than a cliché for Joe and Alessandra. Fresh faced college graduates, they had no way of knowing what lay ahead of them. For it would be vastly different than anything they had imagined. Soon, their very existence would be balanced on a knife edge. Where the slightest misstep would be catastrophic.
Ned and his conspirators had been banished from the Kingdom. The Fallen One believed it better to rule than to serve. Ned was physically attractive, had amassed great wealth and was desired by women. Yet, the one thing he wanted more than anything else, lay just out of his reach. That is until he found Alessandra. She was the key! With her, he could have it all! Finally he would have that which had eluded him for all time. Or would he? Could she resist him? Even defeat him?
S. William Foley has penned a one of a kind novel, where the characters, while interacting within a fantasy world, could not be more real. Questions of spirituality, ethics and morals are presented through detailed plot lines that could easily be woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Foley has delivered a well constructed novel that combines interesting characters, intriguing dialogue and explosive moral conflicts. This rare mix, will undoubtedly place Foley on the favorites list of many readers.
Happy Reading!
Got Foley?.......2005-09-14
FOLEY has done it again! He has written a unique, page-turning romance novel with all the thrill of fantasy and intrigue! This book has just the right mix to broaden your literary horizons!
mass appeal.......2005-08-27
In Foley's first full-length novel we encounter the ultimate struggle between good and evil. Souls Triumphant introduces strong, well-defined characters, some evil incarnate others venerable. The plot offers a love story in an epic tale with a fantasy backdrop; a page-turner(!) with myriad literary illusions. It appeals to teens and adults who enjoy reading fantasy, love stories and those who like literary illusions and heroic tales. A delightful read! Teachers and librarians will be pressing this title into the hands of teens!

Get off the dieting failure treadmill forever!.......2006-10-21
I saw Dr. Yavari on CNN and knew right away that he could help me with my medical problems. I bought his book and discovered new information on problems I had dealt with all of my life. I made a life-changing decision to move to Connecticut from California to go to Dr. Yavari's clinic. His program as described in this book has changed the course of my life. I have lost weight and am close to being free from insulin dependence. I hope that other over-40 women and diabetics who are battling stubborn weight gain, particularly in the stomach, will take advantage of this book and finally find relief.
Current medical coverage on television and the Internet supports the newly-discovered existence of metabolic syndrome where excess body fat causes diabetes and heart disease. Cross-talk between fat cells, appetite and stress centers in the brain and metabolism are discussed in an easily comprehensible style for the lay person. Both Parts I and II of the book have plenty of material on meal planning, food choices and exercise. You will learn why stress reduction is so important, why skipping meals or crash dieting shuts down your metabolism and why abdominal fat accumulates because of changes in your hormones. Do yourself a favor and become an advocate of this system. I and other patients of Dr. Yavari are living proof that it's not "our fault" and that there really is a way out of the "repeated failure" system of dieting. Good luck!
Read it; You Are Worth It! .......2006-08-23
I found this book incredibly helpful for I finally understand why the fad diets just don't work. This book is not just another diet book nor is it a weight loss book; so don't expect to find weight loss tricks here and there. I have used this book as part of the program offered at the Doctor's center in Connecticut. For the first time in my life I am losing weight while I am eating plenty of healthy foods. I feel satisfied, calm, and much happier, plus I am exercising and enjoying it too! I feel great and have more energy than ever. The best part is that my health has dramatically improved. Finally, I am learning that it is not about dieting as much as it is about my lifestyle that needs to change to maintain good health.
I personally found the discussion of how stress and fad dieting can cause weight gain very insightful. The book also has excellent and easy to read chapters on metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetes state that causes heart disease and full blown diabetes if not reversed. The recipes, meal plan and the six-month clinical program in part II of the book are the same as the plan I have followed at Dr. Yavari's center. I recommend this great book to anyone who is tired of fad diets and is interested in living a healthy lifestyle while preventing diabetes
It Must Be My Job.......2006-03-15
Overall, the book is full of not so interesting background information rather than useful tip for weight loss. I travel 100% of the work week. I live in hotels and eat in restuarants except for the weekends. This book was not particularly helpful to me.

Makes planning a party easy.......2007-04-27
This cook book includes lots of pictures (I think one for each recipe) and is separated into chapters for each holiday. It inludes ideas for complete holiday celebrations, from drinks to desert to center pieces and decorations. The ideas are cute and unique. I think adults and kids will have fun with the ideas in this book. I am planning on following the recipe plan for Cinco de Mayo!
Mostly semi homemade recipes.......2005-10-11
If you like semi homemade recipes, than this book is great. Most recipes call for cake mixes, canned biscuits, canned frostings, etc. The book is very pretty to look through, and has lots of great photos, but the recipes are mainly for beginners. If your into homemade cooking than I would recommend Celebrate by Shiela Lukins.
Better than the other Celebrate Book!.......2005-01-21
I looked at both Celebrate by Sheila Lukins and the BC Celebrate book and I chose the Betty Crocker. It has more family type of recipes that would be appealing to both adults and children. The Lukins book is good for adults only. It had many, many recipes there's no way you'd get a kid to eat. I also like the BC one better because it had decoration suggestions, table settings, etc that were more doable and cost effective. I like both books but if you have kids you have to go with the Betty Crocker Celebrate book.

Sensational little book, beautifully done.......2004-06-16
Really a little gem of a book. It's small enough to fit comfortably in your hands and it's just stuffed with information and tasty graphics. The Art Director must have been giggling with delight, the book is really a showpiece. The colorful photos jump off the page and the text is handled in the usual effortless DK manner. Even if you have zero interest in fish, this book is a joy to page through. Beautifully put together.
Good Refference.......2004-06-15
This is a good quick reference guide & has has a good collection of species & varieties. You couldn't raise any fish from the information in this book - but it certainly makes choosing those right for you aquarium a little easier.
Ok for the price or a - - 3 stars.......2003-12-14
Like all DK books this little (72 page) book is very pretty and well organized. Unfortunately it provides little info and also misleads the buyer. At first glance it appears to cover 101 fish ("101 Aquarium Fish" is in large print) but only 40 fish are covered and 5 of these are just different types of goldfish. Of the remaining 61 "Essential Tips" included are: Tip #61-Clubs, discusing joining a club, and tip #45 Choosing Prepacked Food, showing photos of different food types ie flakes (2 types shown), pellets, tablets etc.
Needs a companion book.......2003-06-08
While this is a good quick reference guide, I have found that I have needed another book for most things. This would probably be good for kids as long as parents have another source for more detailed reference.
Beautiful photos, not enough info.......2002-11-05
This is a handy little guidebook that features very high-quality photographs (it's another DK book) of just about every aquarium fish you are likely to encounter. It is useful primarily for those looking to distinguish their Five-Banded Barbs from their Checker Barbs or their Madagascar Rainbowfish from their Siamese Tigerfish - i.e. it is a book for fish nerds. I do recommend this book for the enthusiast and the beginner alike, however the beginner should not rely on this book alone as it does not provide nearly enough information on setting up the aquarium, choosing compatible fishes, and trouble-shooting. My main criticism is that while the design and layout of the book, and the large, clear color photos of the fish, makes it a pleasure to read, it provides only very basic information about each fish. For some unknown reason, the critically important subject of water chemistry and temperature is practically ignored. I also find it disturbing that the author does not really indicate which fishes are good for the beginner, and which are more fragile, and suitable only for more advanced aquarists. This is an unfortunate exclusion given the fact that so many fish languish and die in tanks owned by inexperienced people who lack the knowledge to properly choose and care for them. If you're looking for information you can really use, there is not much point in learning to distinguish between 500 different varieties of fishes, but not knowing which of those fishes you would be most likely to be able to keep successfully (taking into account such factors as your level of skill/experience, local water chemistry, the size of the tank etc.). Still, it's worth a look.

With an alphebetical listing of all the names of the animals, and separate catagories such as Bears, Cats, and Hares, it takes just minutes to find exactly what plush you are looking for. This book also gives info on bearstones, folkstones ect., limited edition and exclusive pieces and the F.o.B club. This book definitely deserves its 5 star rating.
YOU NEED THIS BOOK!.......1999-04-27
This book is much better than last year's in that fewer bears have been omitted and the "long losts" of Boyds have turned up in its pages with some beautiful photographs. I do miss the photos of the Boyds in scenes with accessories (T.H.B. Style) side by side. But these photos are great! CVG prices are realistic and in some cases even low - unlike some other value guides - these are the real prices people are paying this Spring 99 for many of the pieces I see bought and sold. The book has one serious SHORTCOMING - not found in the 99 partner book for resins (The Bearstone Collection...and Desk Animals, also by Checkerbee). The alphabetical index is great -- the organization is fine -- BUT there is no numerical index on this guide so that users can use the "Bearfinder Index" by name and by number - only by name. As Boyds have Boyds numbers assigned to them and sometimes arrive to owners as mystery bears - known only by number, this book makes you work hard in such cases to determine who your little prize is - even if he is mint in the manufacturer's bag with a Boyds Style # written on it. But - don't be deterred - If you are a serious collector, you will use it daily! And, you'll see lots of nice little furry faces while you hunt! It will make you smile.

New to sewing? This old book is great to have!.......2005-05-18
And it's usually inexpensive. I picked my copy up in a used book store about 10 years ago when I started sewing again. It starts you with the basic sewing machine knowledge, to picking a pattern, all the way to the finished garment. It even has the measurement chart for pattern companies that I'm pretty sure is still in use by the Big Four (Vogue, Butterick, Simplicity, and McCall's--the only exception I know of is Vogue Today's Fit, they use new measurements). She tells you how to make your own tailor's ham; what you need for successful pressing; practice pages to copy to practice stitching a straight line; facts on fabrics and fibers; details about cutting out a pattern; shoulder pads; hand sewing in a push-button age; linings, hems, zippers, waistband, belts, making frogs--I could go on and on. I've had this book, like I said, a good 10 years (the copyright is 1967), and I learn something every time I pick it up. And Mrs. Margolis' writing is so friendly and clear, it's like learning to sew from your favorite aunt who always dressed so classy.
Break down and spend the couple of dollars on this book--you'll be glad you did.

A great abridged version of "Of Brigands and Bravery". But I would advise that anyone seriously interested in this subject should just get " Of Brigands and Bravery"

Book Description
“From the moment I read the words [my great-grandmother] Frances Anne Rollin wrote in Boston on January 1, 1868—“The year renews its birth today with all its hopes and sorrows”—she became my beacon, the foremother who would finally share with me our collective past . . . —From the Preface
Originally published to rave reviews, Pride of Family is the dazzling true story of an upper middle-class African American clan—and four generations of extraordinary women. Carole Ione, rebel daughter from a long line of rebel daughters, traces her heritage from her mother, Leighla, a sad and lovely journalist, actress, and composer; to glamorous grandmother Be-Be, the popular restaurateur and former showgirl; to upright great-aunt Sistonie, one of Washington’s first black female physicians; and, finally, to great-grandmother Frances Anne Rollin, the indomitable feminist-abolitionist. It is through her great-grandmother’s brilliant diaries that Ione finds enlightenment—a deep connection to the women she cherishes and the proud, glorious history they share.

A story of strength.......2005-01-23
"The truth is I knew I was female before I knew I was black." After reading
the first line of the preface in Carole Ione's book PRIDE OF FAMILY, I was
filled with anticipation of what was to follow. I was not disappointed
because what I discovered was a wonderful account of Ione's family history and
her own told in a voice of someone who was seeking answers and understanding.
Ione's tone and writing is so inviting that you willingly take the journey with
her and you soon find yourself living with the ghosts of her foremothers and
their colorful stories.
In PRIDE OF FAMILY, Ione embarks on a journey inspired by the mystery of the
lives of the three women who raised her -- her mother, her grandmother, and
her great aunt. Each woman was radically different in her view on life, but
they were bound together by a family history that was steeped in pride and
passion. Her mother, Leighla Frances Whipper Lewis, was a journalist and
mystery writer who also acted. Her grandmother, Virginia Wheeler, was dancer
who loved to gamble and was also no stranger to cooking and cleaning. Her
great aunt, Dr. Ionia Rollin Whipper, was a conservative medical doctor in
Washington DC. Each woman lived life fully and with zest according to her own
rules and each taught little Carole a different set of rules which sometimes
confused but in the end pushed her to delve into her family's history.
PRIDE OF FAMILY exposes the vulnerability of this family of largely
accomplished women. Ione also tells the story of the men who seemed to dance
intricately in and out of each woman's story. Ione's own story is told
through telling about her foremothers and her desire to learn more about her
great grandmother, Frances Anne Rollin. PRIDE OF FAMILY is thoroughly
engrossing as well as informative. Ione brings to life the various time
periods and locations as she shares the accounts and experiences of her
relatives. She discovers her personal truths and she shares them willingly
with readers.
PRIDE OF FAMILY is a must read for history buffs and anyone with an interest
in gender studies.

painfully honest self-discovery.......1999-04-10
I belong to the "Open Gates" bookclub of Cumberland County Public Library, Fayetteville, NC. Each month we select a work by an African American author to read and discuss. Sometimes we do not have sufficient copies of any one book and several are selected. This was one of the selections that fell into that category; with limited copies in the system, and I volunteered to read this selection. I am fascinated by self-discovery and love first person writing and narratives. Ms. Ione's book was extremely honest, and I admired her quest for her family's history of their women. She did not spare herself in that quest and the disclosure of some of the most intimate details of her own life was admirable. This is an important book because it reminds us that we are not apt to understand who we are unless we understand what made us, who made us, and those who came before us. Black folks are so involved in the daily struggle to survive, few of us have the luxury of contemplating who we are, and why we are. Thanks to Ms. Ione and all of her "sheroes". She reminded them, as well as herself, that the best of us are only human in our basic needs for affirmation.
