Book Description
Elspeth McGillicuddy was not a woman usually given to hallucinations. But when she witnesses what appears to be a woman being strangled on a train and no-one else sees it, no-one reports it and no corpse is found she turns to her old friend Jane Marple to help solve the puzzle. Marple asks her highly efficient and intelligent young acquaintance, Lucy Eyelesbarrow to infiltrate the Crackenthorpe family, who seem to be at the heart of the mystery, and help unmask a murderer.Customer Reviews:

Don't miss this one!.......2004-04-26
Miss Marple believed her friend was not imagining whole thing. When the police found no evidence of the crime Miss Marple began to investigate for herself. She located the most likely place a body could be disposed of, a large estate owned by the Crackenthorpe family and arranged for a confederate, Lucy Eyelesbarrow to work for the family.
The Crackenthorpe family is another of Christie's large dysfunctional families dominated by a disagreeable father (Luther), downtrodden daughter (Emma), ambitious son (Harold) and a pair of blacksheep - the artistic Cedric and the slightly crooked Alfred. Two other siblings have died, Edmund and Emma. Emma's husband, Bryan and son, Alexander are also part of the household.
The body is found, more murders commited, the culprit unmasked and the true motive revealed in dramitic fashion by Miss Marple.
Along the way romance flourishes and leaves the reader with an unanswered question.
The family is very much like characters from similiar families in other books, (HERCULE POIROT'S CHRISTMAS, A POCKET FULL OF RYE, CROOKED HOUSE and others). This, coupled with the various titles this story has had over the years - WHAT MRS. McGILLICUDDY SAW, EYEWITNESS TO MURDER and MURDER SHE SAID, could lead a reader to think they had read this one before. Do not pass this one by, it is worth reading for the delightful Lucy Eyelesbarrow alone!
Title Correction.......2004-02-26
Fact is that 4:50 is the the original title, as written by Dame Agatha. The rather lurid 'Mrs McGillicuddy' title is an American imposition. So for those to descry the idiocy of publishers and silly name changes...look to your own garden.
Joan Hickson reads one of Christie's best.......2003-09-23
In a houseful of potential murderers, the very interesting Christie character named Lucy Eyelesbarrow takes a position in order to find the body. As one commentator mentions, she is Christie's strongest independent woman to date and possibly in all of the mysteries. So where Rutherford simply was given a fatter role, the original story is that of Lucy with some fancy brainwork by Miss Marple, of course.
A very good entry in Audio Partners readings.

The Life of Sir Aglovale de Galis
Various Manufacturer: Impressions ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1928999085 |
Book Description
Originally published in 1905 and long unavailable in an affordable format, The Life of Sir Aglovale de Galis is a psychological reconstruction of the life of a minor character in Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, showing the dark underside of the Round Table. It is a Job-like tale of the rogue knight Aglovale, son of King Pellinore, and his path toward spiritual redemption. Written in the fine slow prose of contemplation, Sir Aglovale was Clemence Housman's third and final novel. It is also her finest achievement, a work of such impact that famed mystery novelist Ellis Peters called it "By far the finest work on an Arthurian theme since Malory."Customer Reviews:
Malory would be proud.......2002-10-23
It was written at the turn of the last century by Clemence Housman (sister of poet A.E. Housman) who also wrote the short story 'The Were-wolf'. This Arthurian tale details the life and (hard) times of one Sir Aglovale de Galis, a minor player mentioned only once or twice in Malory, most notable for the fact that his two more famous brothers were Sir Lamorak and Sir Percivale. Sir Aglovale, as is often the case for elder brothers saddled with more prominent younger siblings, has a tough go of it and ends up becoming something of an embarrassment to the court of Arthur and his family. This is as much due to the fact of Aglovale's unflinching morality and truthfulness as it is to the more egregious errors he makes along the way, since he is unwilling to turn a blind eye to the rot that lives at the core of the Arthurian dream. Housman manages to play a careful balancing act with this aspect of Camelot. She certainly isn't a starry-eyed dreamer portraying an Arthur who can do no wrong, but on the other hand she doesn't allow the ambiguity of Camelot to completely destroy the dream that it represents. Rather we see the fallible world of men overshadowing the greater ideals that were supposed to pave the way for a new golden age. Aglovale is, in this world, both the best and the worst that Camelot has to offer.
The tale itself is a series of vignettes that follow Aglovale through the trials of his life, from an early flowering in his youth (soon overshadowed by Lamorak), the bad choices made later in life, to the final tragic end he meets. Percival and Lamorak play major roles in the story, as do Lancelot and the Orkney brothers, each displaying a different aspect of the life of Camelot (purity and idealism, temporal success and fame, courtly intrigue and violence) and thus we get a fairly well-rounded view of the court despite the fact that Aglovale spends little time there himself. Housman's characters are not cardboard cut-outs and display a wide-range of emotion and action while at the same time embodying these various aspects of the world in which they live.
The story covers a wide range of thematic issues from jealousy and love, anger and violence to mercy and forgiveness, success and failure, truth and falsehood, and faith and despair through the vivid and complex characterizations that Housman achieves. The language is also excellent, a conscious mirroring of Malory's archaism, though it may drive off some modern readers not familiar or comfortable with such a style. In effect Housman has managed to take the best aspects of Malory (poetic prose, a
conscious immersion in a violent yet idealistic medieval world, an anachronistic creation of a medieval England that never was) and combine it with a more modern complexity and narrative focus to produce what may be the best Arthurian retelling of the 20th century in novel form. The story is a moving one that is an unflinching look at human life. Harsh truths are not ignored or explained away, but neither is idealism rejected as a fatuous dream. Housman has thus managed something that few enough of the Arthurian re-tellers have managed: she has remained true to the core ideals and questions that are brought up by the source material while managing to put her own thoughtful spin to the material. I highly recommend seeking out this book (newly reissued by Green Knight publishing) and giving it a try.
A Notable Reissue Of Arthurian Legend.......2000-10-10
This is not a work that will appeal to everyone. The author has intentionally mirrored the writing style of Mallory, whom in the text she acknowledges as "The Master." The archaic, and some might say unnecessarily dense, style of writing is bound to deter the casual reader, while at the same time delighting fans of Mallory, and the narrative reads as if a lost chapter of the latter author's work. Nonetheless, for anyone who has loved the Morte D'Arthur, as well as the scholar of Arthurian romance, this will be a valuable addition to the literature surrounding the legend, and a book not to be missed. The publisher, Green Knight, who is devoting itself to the publication of out of print "classics" in Arthurian romance, as well as contemporary works of fantasy based upon the legend, has done a great service in reissuing this long unavailble title.

Identifying Biblical Persons in Northwest Inscriptions of 1200-539 B.C.E. (Academia Biblica (Society of Biblical Literature) (Paper)) (Academia Biblica (Society of Biblical Literature) (Paper))
Lawrence J. Mykytiuk Manufacturer: Society of Biblical Literature ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1589830628 |
Product Description
This book establishes the first comprehensive system for evaluating potential identifications of persons mentioned in the Hebrew Bible with persons mentioned in Northwest Semitic inscriptions. It applies this system in detail to a small number of Hebrew inscriptions, the Mesha Inscription, and the Tel Dan stela. Appendixes updated through mid-2002 briefly evaluate potential identifications of over seventy-five biblical persons in over ninety Northwest Semitic inscriptions that are mostly contemporary with the person. Resulting identifications and nonidentifications appear in six categories of strength or weakness, from unmistakable to disqualified. The final product is the first extensive corpus consisting only of inscriptions that name biblical persons. This technical book will appeal to advanced scholars, graduate students, seminarians, clergy, and others who have a working knowledge of at least one Northwest Semitic language (e.g., biblical Hebrew) as well as! to all, including nonspecialists, who are interested in questions of biblical historicity.

I Was Born in Slavery: Personal Accounts of Slavery in Texas (Real Voices, Real History Series)
Manufacturer: John F. Blair Publisher ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0895872749 |
Book Description
When you think of early Texas history, you think of freedom fighters at the Alamo and rugged cowboys riding the plains. You usually don't think too much about slavery in the Lone Star State. Although slavery only existed in Texas from the second decade of the 19th century to the close of the Civil War, the majority of early settlers came to Texas from other Southern states. When they moved westward, they brought their slaves with them.According to the 1850 census, 27.3 percent of the families in Texas owned slaves. By the 1860 census, that number had risen to 30.8 percent. These figures closely match the number of slaveholders in Virginia during that same time.
When the Federal Writers' Project sent interviewers across Texas to find former slaves and document what their lives were like during slavery, they filed over 590 slave narratives, the largest collection of any state. The 27 selections in I Was Born in Slavery show that Texas slaves had their own distinctive voices, often colored by their Western culture.
