Customer Reviews:
an excellent addition to the Needlecraft series.......2007-08-15
There is not much needlecraft in this title as others in the series, but that is okay. Because, in this book you find that Betsy has interests beyond needlecraft. Which makes her a more interesting person. I truly like Betsy and look forward to meeting up with her in future books.
A Murderous Yarn.......2007-08-03
The book was very interesting all the way though. I enjoy Monica Ferris'
books.
A Murderous Yarn (Needlecraft Mysteries) .......2007-05-13
As usual a very good mystery novel from the Needlecraft Mysteries by Monica Ferris
Orts.......2006-07-18
This resembles butter brickle ice cream. It is pleasant to have to while away a summer day. This evidently is a series for needleworkers. Betsy Devonshire owns a yarn shop, Crewel World. She has an assistant, Godwin, and a twenty two pound cat. She is also the landlord because she bought the building in which her shop is located. The back of her shop is devoted to cross stitch.
Irene Potter is a talented needleworker and Crewel World customer. She has started to do a work on an Imressionist painting. It seems she used a borrowed copy of an exhibition catalogue. Apparently her point of departure is a Guy Wiggins painting, but she has used modern cars. There is a discussion about exhibiting it in the state fair, Minnesota,(some mention is made of Minnesota nice), or at at the Creative Arts and Textiles Show.
Betsy holds a Monday brunch at the shop. People arrive with their projects. A friend, Jill, notes that her good friend Lars Larson has sold his hobby farm and that he wants to spend the proceeds from the sale on a Stanley Steamer. Betsy becomes a sponsor for Lars for the sake of publicity for the shop. Subsequently Betsy helps out at an antique car run and Irene Potter shows several of her pieces at the art show.
Bill Birmingham, the owner of a Maxwell, is killed when his car explodes and he is underneath it trying to fix it, it would seem. Betsey is asked by his widow Charlotte to fill a role as unofficial investigator of the tragedy. Jill, who is a member of the local police department, gives Besty a look at some of the scene of the crime photos. Orts are morsels of food or stitchers' leavings. Seeing orts in the photos leads Betsy to a solution to the mystery. This certainly goes much much beyond formula writing. Betsy, her shop assistants, her customers, and her friends are delightful.
Ho-hum. Not awful, but don't go out of your way for this one.......2006-06-16
I had a long plane trip, so I brought along A Murderous Yarn to entertain me along the way. While I'm not into embroidery, I do like quilting and sewing, so I thought it'd be fun to read a mystery set in a needlework shop.
If you're considering this book for the same reason... well, it sounds as though the other books in this series are more likely to satisfy your hunger. There's almost no needlework in the story; the tale is centered around vintage cars. That can be interesting, and it is what the "book cover" here promised, but I sure thought I'd get that info in *addition* to needlework.
All of that would be fine if the mystery and characters held my attention. They were... okay. The characters are fine, though they didn't make me want to know them a lot better. The mystery was okay, too; for most of the book, I was wrong about whodunnit. But the story construction kept me from getting engaged in what was going on: poor pacing, elements that were thrown in because it seemed like someone told the author you need one in any mystery (such as the necessity of having a cat, who neither adds to the story nor demonstrates the character's, er, character), and a really bad case of switching viewpoint away from Betsy for no good reason.
The end result was that, partway through the flight, I turned to the stranger sitting next to me and said, "I think I know who did it, and I don't care." I pulled out my laptop and went to work for a couple of hours. I _did_ finish the last few chapters, the next day, but any novel that can let me go back to work earns less than four stars.
Book Description
The Goon and Franky have been best friends ever since they was tykes. Find out how the two little ankle-biters became best pals and how they muscled their way into the rackets of big-time crime-boss, Labrazio - who, incidentally, nobody's seen in a while. This trip down memory lane ain't gonna be no joyride, neither. Franky and the Goon are going to have to take on a horde of zombies, an army of hoboes, a couple of grave robbin' freaks, a guy with a gold head and his killer robot, a pie-crazed skunk ape, one homely, man-crazy sea hag, and a whole lot of other things that smell just as bad, if not worse. Pick up a copy, because those uptown rich people may have the cops and their G-men, but down here all we got is the Goon!
Customer Reviews:
One of the best comics in the past 10 years.......2007-02-16
I recommend The Goon to ANYONE that likes any type of comic genre. Its a fresh fell and its unlike anything you've read before. It really blew me away, extremely recommended and a MUST BUY.
A speed bump to an otherwise great series........2006-09-19
This second volume of The Goon does not live up to the standards of the first. It is a compilation set where you do not have one continuous running adventure, and that is not all bad. However, the stories just weren't as good to me. There were bright points, but for the most part I feel the series took a step back in these issues. Don't get me wrong I will still continue to purchase the series, but this was not my favorite, and I can't give it any more than an average review.

Book Description
An all-new update of the classic post-apocalyptic world. The original Gamma World campaign setting was considered by many to be the definitive post-apocalyptic environment. Now Gamma World has returned to the Alternity(r) line, and it's stronger than ever. Old fans will want to see what's changed and update their existing campaigns, and new fans will be drawn to the classic dark, apocalyptic feel that only the Gamma World setting delivers.
Customer Reviews:
If you are a Gamma World veteran don't waste your time on it.......2000-10-16
Having played and owned every version of the Gamma World rules (1st - 4th edition) This new book from Wizards of the Coast is not Gamma World (just like 3rd edition is not AD&D). Mutated Plants and Mutated Animals is no longer part of the game. Sure there are some premade of each in the game, but if you decided to play a mutated wasp it is no longer possible. None of the rules have been kept and when reading the book it lost the sci-fi feel that is gamma world. Veteran players don't matter anymore as this is apparent from current releases from WOTC. The only use I have found for the rulebook is as a room divider for my gerbil.
Not even a campain setting..........2000-06-10
Nice cover art. But not a "Hardcover." And not much of a campaign setting. The background is very brief - and isn't very well developed. Advanced Tech is strictly limited to use only by Pure Strain Humans. Because for some reason, before the mutations started, every single peice of equipment from cars to grenades is built with a "Genteric Scanning" device that can tell the difference between humans and mutants. Utterly disabling the equipment unless weilded by a human. (And rendering it non-functional if the scanner is tampered with...) Andriods are one of the "Hero" or player races. An interesting concept. But for some reason the Andriods don't remember who built them or why. They just wander around the rubble with everyone else, trying to be helpful. The mutations presented seem overall weaker than in previous editions, but just as strange. "Acid touch" can be used once per week, while some offensive powers work every combat round. ("Hey, thats it for me, can we camp for a week?")
Most of the setting meterial in the back is taken up by a couple of overly scripted scenario's.
Lets hope that this is the last holdover from TSR, and that the new material under Wizards will fare better.
Not quite bad, not quite good........2000-06-09
This is the fifth time Gamma World has reared its head from the depths of "dead game" limbo. I have been anticipating it since I first heard about it and took a survey a year ago on what I would like to see in it.
The art and layout of the book is great. I will say this is the coolest looking Gamma World yet. To bad the system it uses is "finished."
The game works fantastic with the Alternity system, but it lost a little in the translation. Not one drop of the drama and action are missing, but rather a (in my opinion) very critical part is: the mutant animals and robots. Sure the rules for animal PCs are in the Dragon issue 272 but I would have rather it have been in the main book.
Another thing I find a blessing and a curse is that they reprint much of the Alternity rules in this book. This is nice because Gamma World is its own self contained book but it also does two things. One it makes me feel like Gamma World really isn't part of the Alternity system, but rather a way to tap a forgotten market. It also takes space away from other things more Gamma World specific.
To be fair the animals were said to be removed because they didn't fit in with the image WotC designers were going for. However (as I said before) animals make up a critical part of my game and therefore feel odd to be missing.
All and all it is a good addition to my collection, but a little flawed.
Another fine work in the Alternity line of books........2000-06-07
Before Wasteland, Fallout and the Road Warrior, there was Gamma World! In their salad days, TSR created their vision of the post-nuclear war world to the delight of many fans who had been seaching for a non-fantasy setting in which to roleplay. It was met with fair success, but never got the following of AD&D and was an early casualty to the TSR turmoil of the early nineties.
This product brings the game up to date with the Alternity rules. Even though you don't need the Player's Handbook and GameMaster's Guide, I highly recommend getting them to enhance play. Gamma World can easily fit into a current Alternity campaign as a world visited via spaceship or an alternate dimension setting.
The book does not have a lot of the light-heartedness that made the original such a favorite of my friends, but it still looks like a blast to play. It provides a fair amount of material to introduce to your players as you see fit without stagnating your own sense of creativity.
My only real complaint is that we can't expect much in terms of future development. Wizards of the Coast decided to scrap Alternity and Gamma World represents one of the few products that didn't get the axe before shutting down production completely.

Bible?? The book is less then a inch thick!.......2006-07-18
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!! The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!! Try Prevention The Sugar Solution. I am returning the "bible". What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.
The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld.......2006-03-19
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips. I've tried some of the recipes and they are good. I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.
Does Not Deliver What It Promises.......2004-08-16
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.
I was particularly interested in the SHOPPING promise because I find that to be the most difficult part of managing my diet. Other books didn't have anything helpful, and despite its promise, this book doesn't either. One has to read through every single recipe, write down the ingredients of what you want to make, and then go out and get it. Just like every other book. So tell me: how does this help with "shopping"? I expected lists of basic staples in a diabetic's diet. There should be lists of "must-haves" for your pantry. This book lies about what it contains, and is sadly lacking in what it needs.
An expensive mistake, don't buy it.
most helpful book so far.......2002-06-10
Now that the condition called "pre-diabetic" has been recognized by the medical profession, even more people need information on meals, recipes and menu planning to aid in blood glucose control. I have just recently been diagnosed as pre- or "borderline" diabetic. Pre-diabetes and diabetes are medical conditions that are vastly under the control of the patient. We have all heard that losing weight and increasing exercise are vital to controlling diabetes. At this point I have read about six books on diabetes and this one is by far the best. Some of the books were a complete waste of money, in my opinion; for example, "Tell Me What to Eat if I Have Diabetes" was for processed and fast food junkies. All of the books present information on goals for blood glucose levels, what are carbohydrates, etc. But for me, I needed help with menu planning, balancing proteins, carbos, fats, calories, increasing fiber, etc.
"The Diabetes Bible" does have workable recipes - the ones I have made were very tasty. The biggest shock comes when you actually measure the serving sizes specified. A 4-ounce apple did not exist in my grocery store - they were all 8 ounces. So, if you follow their menu plans (I used the 1,200 to 1,400 calorie plan), you can eat only half that apple. It is amazing how small a half-cup portion of cooked vegetables is or two ounces of lean protein is an incredibly tiny piece (I once virtuously ate a small fish fillet, only to find out that I had consumed "four exchanges"). And one cup of milk is only a few swallows.
My biggest complaint about the book is that many menus rely on reduced fat cheeses, "lite" sour cream and margarine, although they do admit you can used the real thing, but (obviously) eat even less of it.
It is no lie to say that controlling pre-diabetes or diabetes is a heck of a lot of work. Given the risks of not controlling these conditions - eye damage, peripheral neuropathy, risk of heart attack and stroke - patient motivation to lose weight, increase exercise, control blood pressure and blood glucose, reduce cholesterol, etc. should be high, but it certainly is no day at the beach. The "Diabetes Bible" at least gave me some place to start.
More than one hundred healthful and tasty dishes.......2001-08-09
In The Diabetes Food & Nutrition Bible: A Complete Guide To Planning, Shopping, Cooking, And Eating, Hope Warshaw and Robyn Web effectively collaborate to draw upon their more than twenty years experience with the challenges of a diabetic lifestyle. All aspects of sound and nutritious cuisine for the diabetic is covered including the what to look for and what to avoid with respect to canned and prepared foods from the supermarket, portion control and the role it plays in a healthy eating plan for diabetics; five "Nutrition Superstars" that compliment any diabetic diet; and the diabetes meal plan based on building blocks of healthful eating for people with diabetes. No diabetics's reference shelf and cookbook collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of The Diabetes Food & Nutrition Bible!

Suprised.......2007-04-05
I was suprised that this was a vegan/vegetarian cookbook. After that wore off, I liked the book. I like books that I don't have to actually cook to enjoy. I was able to curl up with a glass of wine and read this without ever have to turn on the oven. I tagged some recipes to try later and have found the ones that have been made to be good. I am looking forward to making some more of them.
Great book, a delcious read with a cup of tea,.......2006-12-26
I loved this book! The recipes were beautiful and tasty but more importantly (to me at least) its a cookbook I could curl up with and read without even turning on the oven. Enjoyable and relaxing!!
Somewhat Disappointed.......2006-10-20
I've had this book on my Wish List for a while and finally recieved it. While I have not yet read it cover to cover, I did look at all the recipes and this is when my disappointment set in.
I was not expecting a vegetarian/vegan cookbook. Nowhere in the book's description does it states that the recipes are vegetarian or vegan. The recipes in the book, however, do sound good and I plan to try them out, but perhaps Cait Johnson or Destiny Books should label their books accordingly in the future. Kitchen Witches do not have to be vegetarian or vegan.
Good recipes seasoned with fun...........2005-09-30
If you are like me and looking for ways to eat veggies without being obvious, you will enjoy some of Cait Johnson's ideas for soups, salads and breads.
The big plus is that most of Cait's recipes are fairly healthful. Take the Cailleach or Kale-Leek Soup. Made without cream or butter, it includes olive oil and two veggies that are good for you.
Arranged seasonally, Johnson't book begins with Autumn (Mabon and Samhain fare) and continues through the witch's year to the festivities in mid-Spring when Johnson offers the reader-cook a lovely Miso soup and Salad Nests that are good for you and don't taste too bad (if you like sprouts, it will help).
I'm not much of a summer cook, but Titania's Cherry Soup made with honey, yogurt and Maple syrup finally allows me to make something other than muffins with my spring cherries. The Midsummer salad helps me make use of the various excess from the stock of hot peppers I grow every year for my parrots and my son-in-law. One of my favorite soups, however, is the Tomato-Venus soup around the feast of Lugh which I prefer to the cherry soup, which seems truly weird to me. Or, there's Juno's Summer Quiche if you can bear to turn on the oven.
In addition to following the Wheel of the Year and it's holidays as an organizing principle for her text, Johnson includes a little mystical background information about each of the various celebrations along with a list of supplies and other-worldly information.
Way Too Much Time On Hands.......2005-03-20
Cait appears to have a lot of time on her hands so she decided to write a book. LOL

Wonderful and Comforting prayers for our pets........2007-10-08
This book was so comforting to our family during the time our Boston Terrier ran away from home into the woods. We said the prayer for Return of a Lost Pet day and night. On the 11th day she was found about one and half miles from home, cold, wet and hungry. I don't think she would have lasted another day ,because it started to snow. By the grace of God she was protected by angels. She had no major injuries, only very sore paws. Two days later she's back to herself. A great book to read!!!!
Prayers and Protection for our Pets ! What a Great Book !.......2007-04-27
This book was a great inspiration for me.Remembering to keep my pets covered in prayer and protection. Wonderful ideas and thought provoking ! Always a reminder that the Lord wants our pets included in our prayers and they are important to Him.. Thanks for reminding me ! Wonderful Reading ! Highly Recommended !
Handy prayers to use daily.......2006-03-10
I use the sample prayers in Animal Prayer Guide daily for my two cats, Sylvester and Rocky. What a great book! The sample prayers are so handy to have, and the whole book is so encouraging. I really like the Blessing of the Animals Service, too. It explains how God wants all His creatures healthy and well, and is an essential daily tool for your animal companions.
A Memorial Service Readily Available.......2005-12-08
I read Niki Behrikis Shanahan's book, Animal Prayer Guide, and used the Memorial Service in it. Having this Memorial Service readily available was especially helpful, as I was at a loss for words or Scriptures to use during this traumatic time. I love the prayers for saying grace, for sick pets, the Blessing of the Animals Service, and all the other prayers that have been prepared and ready for you to customize. She also has interesting stories and photos throughout the book. I'm glad I have this book on hand for any situation that may come my way as a pet parent.
Helpful and heartwarming............2005-06-30
Psalms 36:6 assures us that God loves man and animals alike. It is on this scripture that Ms. Shanahan builds the framework of Animal Prayer Guide. Using scriptures as her guide, along with heartwarming stories and photos, the author takes us step by step through daily life with our animal companions. Animals share our world. They breathe the same air we breathe. Animals suffer and die as humans do, and are resurrected into
Heaven as we are. It stands to reason then that the same prayers spoken for humans should be prayed for animals.
The author makes her case for animals beautifully through God's Word. She also shares stories of miracle healings and angelic protection related to animals. For the readers' convenience, model prayers are offered for a variety of needs including:
praying over our pets' food and water;
praying for healing, protection, and emergencies;
annointing with oil;
a pet memorial service.
Most of us grieve over the loss of a pet as much or sometimes more than the loss of a human friend because animals love as God loves, unconditionally. The Animal Prayer Guide offers hope and comfort to all readers who love and care about their pets. This quote from St. Francis of Assisi sums up this book perfectly: "If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."
This book is highly recommended for people who love and care about their animal companions.
Book Description
This compendium of stories, prayers, ceremonies, and engaging tidbits is a blessing not only for the animals of the world, but for all animal lovers, too. Book Description
The face is the most important feature of a doll -- it is also the most challenging. So it is surprising that there is so little instruction available on creating doll faces. This book fills that void.
Author Patti Medaris Culea began her career in art as a portrait painter and she puts that experience to work when creating her doll faces. In this book, she shows readers a simple technique for easily creating faces using her step-by-step approach. She gives her tips for how to divide the face into quadrants, graft features together, and much more.
Every aspect of doll making is covered -- from the basics to detailed techniques for making the various faces to instructions for putting a pattern together. Readers will learn how to use watercolor pencils, acrylics, and fabric paints to color a face, how to create a face using collage techniques as well as stamping and beading, and tips for working with stretchy fabrics to create indented eyes, separate eyelids, and sculpted lips.

French beading is a simple yet lovely art, beautifully described here and illustrated in color with more than 70 close-up, how-to photos that show the intracacies of growing a garden of 30 flowers with delicate seed beads. Forty additional illustrations present the exact bead placement for each particular flower part. Just string the beads on wires and bend them into realistic, three-dimensional shapes; a helpful introductory section covers all the basics. You can indulge your creative passion almost anywhere--and the nicest thing is, they last forever. Construct a budding dogwood branch, frame a mirror with wisteria blooms, or make a holiday wreath of holly and gold-tipped pinecones. A gallery of vintage pieces illustrates the rich history of the craft.

Pretty projects. Good instructions........2007-02-14
I bought this book because I saw some beaded flowers at a craft show and I thought I'd like to learn to do it myself. I had a little difficulty with the techniques in the beginning, but with practice and by frequently referring to the very nice, detailed pictures in the book, I finally got the hang of it and completed a fine looking poppy (if I do say so myself). I have since complete two other projects. I wouldn't go so far as to say the projects are easy or simple, but they are imminently doable. And last but not least, they provide the beader with a real sense of accomplishment.
Beaded Flower Excellence.......2007-01-04
The most beautiful & easy to understand beading book on this topic I've ever seen. I love it! Great pictures & information. Highly recommended.
Elegant little book.......2006-08-02
Photography is excellent. Very clear instructions. Good for new crafters as well as those with experience. Variety of patterns is excellent.
Very nice beading book.......2005-12-29
This was the first French beading book that I bought. As a beginner, it was a little hard to figure everything out at first, but with some practice and the detailed pictures in this book, I was able to come up with a nice finished product. The things I liked about this book, specifically, were how the first project illustrated the four basic techniques that would be used throughout the whole book. Once I fished the poppy, I almost couldn't believe it would be that simple! I also liked how each project was unique by demonstrating a new concept or some variation of the original four basic techniques (for example, striping the tiger lily and split loop for the dogwood).
What I didn't like too much about this book was that some of the flowers occasionally use previous techniques or ones that are covered later, and so a bit of page turning had to be done.
All in all, the concepts are explained really well, the designs are lovely and the book itself is quite pretty if you just want to admire the pictures, so I highly recommend this book.
Great for beginnners!.......2005-04-03
This was the 4rd book on french beaded flowers that I picked up and I found it to be the best so far. The instructions are very detailed with photos of each step along the way. More detailed than other books I have tried to learn from. If you prefer photos showing the steps as opposed to just hand-drawn diagrams, then this is the book for you!
The pictures of finished projects are gorgeous! Wonderfully inspiring, especially the "fantasy flowers" near the back of the book.
The only minor quibble I have regards the order of introducing new techniques. Some of the advanced techniques are introduced in later chapters, yet are referenced in earlier flowers. The instructions with say "see page such-and-such for this technique", and you have to flip several pages later in the book to find out how to finish your flower. I think it would have been better to have each new technique introduced in order. But that is just a minor complaint based on my personal preferences.
Overall, a stunning book, well worth the money!

Kitsch as kitsch can.......2004-09-25
Twenty projects with color details and instructions. The projects are a step up from beginner's kits. However one would not want to be seen with them or give them away as Christmas presents. The only decent project is probably the Drop Earrings design by Linda Rose Nall; however the beads chosen in the example look like Romper School.
It does require some dexterity, visual acuity and little imagination.
Bead It!.......2000-06-12
What a wonderful book! The projects are designed by a number of different artists, so there is a lot of variety in the styles of the projects. There are tons of different kinds of things to do (ie clothing, jewelry, functional items like boxes). Many of the projects are quite simple and can be done with easy-to-find materials. I had a lot of the materials on hand. The projects are straightforward and look great. Many can be used as a jumping off point so that you can be creative and add a personal touch. I am so glad that I bought this book.
WOW!.......2000-03-10
I enjoyed this book so much. I want to make everything in it. It will inspire you in so many ways. Great instructions too. This book is worth buying. I hope there is another book coming with more ideas.
