Strong Fourth Entry in a Great Series.......2005-10-14
Tom and Callie finally get to spend some time getting to know each other in person. Almost alone at a retreat in North Carolina, one week has stretched into three, but the real world is calling again and they must reluctantly part ways.
Just as they reach the airport, Callie gets a phone call from Stella Gold. Her husband Eli has just been shot by a sniper and is in surgery. Before loosing consciousness, he specifically asked for the two of them to come. Since Eli is such a good friend, they drop everything and rush to his bed side.
A PI, Callie wants to figure out what happened to Eli. The only clue is a warning from someone named Nadine. When Eli and Stella's condo is searched, it is further proof that someone is after him. Where might he have hidden his notes? And why did Eli request Tom's presence?
As this series has progressed, the plots have only gotten strong, and this book is no exception. It starts with a bang and keeps right on going. Every time an answer comes, it only leaves more questions. Yet Callie and Tom keep digging, getting themselves further and further in trouble. While some things seemed obvious a little early on, there are still several nice twists along the way that keep the reader guessing.
Fans of the series will be happy to learn that Tom is a very active part of this book instead of only a presence like in previous entries. In fact, we even get to learn what he does, finally. His relationship with Callie continues to grow as she continues to move on from her husband's death. In fact, one of the strong points of the series is watching Callie finally truly deal with her grief.
The writing style is still a little rough, keeping the reader a little more at bay by telling instead of showing. It's not a big problem, however, and I found myself staying up too late reading every night to see what would happen in the next chapter.
The only problem with this book is the cliffhanger ending. Even though I saw it coming (I've read the back of the next book already), it still left me wanting to pick up the next book right away. Which isn't really a bad thing at all.
With a strong plot and great characters, this Christian mystery series is wonderful entertainment.
A page turner.......2005-01-25
The first book in the Million Dollar Mysteries that you get to see Callie and Tom work so closely together. Clark drives the story along amongst breathtaking scenery, and mounting action. She kept me turing the pages and I finished the story in a short time. The Christianity part wasn't overbearing. I enjoyed being able to see a bit more of Tom, and can't wait to read what the next book will tell of him and Callie.
The only flaw with the series is that the story is "told" to you. I feel as if I don't get to feel and see as Callie actually does, that she is holding me slightly at bay. For a story written in FP POV, I'd like to have more of my senses involved. But it still is a good read.
Buckle Your Seat Belts.......2004-02-12
Charity investigator Callie Webber finally seems to be having some joy in her life. Although heartbroken by the death of her beloved husband in a boating accident, she has just started to explore a relationship with Tom Bennett, Callie's boss and the philanthropist behind the J.O.S.H.U.A. Foundation. As they are ending their vacation together in the North Carolina mountains they receive a devastating call; Eli Gold, Tom's friend and Callie's mentor, has just been shot and his last words before sliding into unconsciousness were to ask for the couple's help.
After rushing to Eli's bedside they discover that he had been tracking down a woman he had thought was dead but is apparently very much alive. Callie also learns that Eli has been hiding his own secret past, namely his history with the National Security Agency and his ties with the mysterious woman. As Tom and Callie follow the trail to the Caribbean island of St. John they find themselves involved in a complicated scheme involving art fraud, secret identities, and double-crosses. Complicating matters is that just as Callie allows herself to believe that it's possible to find two loves in a lifetime she must confront Tom's own past and whether she has enough trust left in her to believe in him.
Although labeled an inspirational Christian mystery, Quarter for a Kiss easily crosses into the mainstream thriller genre with its fascinating plot and fast pace. The action speeds up as Tom and Callie use his rock climbing skills to stage an elaborate break-in into an extensively guarded home and coordinate their investigation with federal agents. One of the most entertaining scenes is the detailed description of Callie's attempt to place bugs within the home of their suspect by using actual bug traps. Additionally, Clark so vividly paints a picture of St. John that the reader feels the breezes and sees the clear ocean. The author successfully creates great characters that are conflicted and very real, from Jodi, Eli's immature adult daughter, to Sergeant Abraham Ruhl, the St. John's police officer who is unwilling to give up his investigation to Interpol or the NAS. Of course, Clark's greatest achievement comes with Callie and Tom, who are both very engaging and slowly building a stronger relationship together. Callie's wit, investigative skills, perseverance, and faith will ensure the success of this fourth entry in the winning Million Dollar Mystery series.
Compelling and entertaining.......2004-01-30
The latest in the Million Dollar Mysteries series is, as always with this author's work, better than the last (and that was pretty good to begin with). Her characters are deepening, she has a gift for plot and structure, and she leaves you wishing she could write the next book fast enough to read as soon as you're done with this one. As Callie and her new beau (and still boss) Tom investigate the shooting of an old, dear friend, the stakes are higher than usual, the emotions are more intense and the story is propelled forward more forcefully. The secrets are many, the solutions make sense and the reader is left wanting more. Can you ask for more than that?
fantastic Million Dollar Mystery.......2004-01-29
In the North Carolina Mountains, Callie and Tom spend three weeks together becoming acquainted in person with one another after only meeting over the telephone due to work. Tom is the philanthropist behind the J.O.S.H.U.A. Project while Callie investigates non-profit groups for grant suitability. Tom introduces Callie to his favorite hobby, mountain climbing while Callie does likewise with canoeing. Both feel something special connects them.
As their time together draws to a close, Stella Gold calls to tell them that her spouse, Eli the man who brought Callie and Tom together has been shot. They rush to Cape Canaveral to visit Eli in the hospital. The ailing Eli asks Callie and Tom to find out who shot him. The duo would refuse nothing if Eli asked so they begin investigating and soon find themselves in danger in the Virgin Islands from someone who wants certain truths to remain hidden.
The fourth Million Dollar Mystery' is a fantastic story that moves the series forward on a personal level as well as providing the audience with a delightful who-done-it. The relationship between Tom and Callie evolves beautifully as each finds they are falling in love with the other, but has baggage holding them back. The amateur sleuth inquiries is cleverly handled because of Callie, who though she is not a detective, her work makes her something more than an amateur. Mindy Starns Clark keeps the suspense going from the moment the dynamic pair reach Florida until the final confrontation in St. Johns and the romance blossoming from the first wall climb to the closing discussion making the upcoming half dollar tale something to look forward to reading.

Ruling without sufficient understanding has led to enormous difficulties in human history.
If we truly understood our world, and wanted to help it and the people in it -- then developing intelligent networks would make more sense than creating authoritarian hierarchies.
Solid Information to Rule Your World.......2007-06-06
Ruling Your World is a great book but it certainly does not go in the direction of typical western thinking. Ruling Your World is not about getting anybody or everybody under your rule or control. Ruling Your World is simply about ruling yourself. If you gain control of yourself, then you rule your world.
For those who are familiar with the teachings of Buddha, there is nothing new in this book. However the book is easy to read and certainly can reinforce information we have already been exposed to.
If you are not familiar with the teachings of Buddha, then this is a great place to start. Sakyong Mipham drives home a very strong point, by concentrating on the little "me" we are engaging in a game we cannot win. The typical western belief is that by acquiring things we will become happy. The simple truth is the ego will never be satisfied. The more we get, the more we want. This becomes a never ending cycle.
There are some very good lessons to be learned. Unfortunately most of them go opposite to western thinking. So it will take much reflection and contemplation to accept these ideas. And as it pointed out, they are no good unless and until we internalize them.
Here is an example of one very important lesson.
We make faulty decisions based on anger, jealousy, desire or pride - signs that we are looking out for "me". If anger is the cause and we want happiness as the result, it's not going to work, because every result has to have a relationship to the cause.
A very good book - worthy of study and contemplation. Once you rule yourself, you rule your world.
My Life Is Changing.......2007-02-27
I already had a good life when I began reading this book. My wife and I had an excellent relationship, my business was starting to prosper etc.
I never knew how much better things could get. I have started applying the things that this book teaches. Today for the first time I realized how much my life has changed. I know that the principles taught in this book are true. I'm not going to go into detail about what the book teaches, but I just want to say that I am buying copies for my family members, and soon my friends and enemies as well.
I wish I could tell the author how thankful I am.
When the author suggests that you start meditating every morning, START DOING IT!!! Don't just say "Yeah, I'll have to give that a try." And then forget to do it like most people who read this book will probably do.
On a slightly religious note. If you are a Christian (as I am) you NEED to read this book, and a lot of other Buddhist literature. I have come to understand the teachings of Christ more now that I have become a student of Buddhism than I ever did before.
A Book for Everyone.......2007-02-12
I am a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism in the Nyingmapa lineage and am at the Vajrayana level. However, I think no matter how far one is into their practice, books like this are invaluable. We must remember to still refresh ourselves with the basics.
This book is for everyone. Those just starting, those more into the practice, advanced practitioners, and even non-Buddhists. It is written so everyone, Buddhist or not, can gather immense help, wisdom, advice, and so on, from it.
I intend to buy copies for several family members.
Just reading this book and meditating on it, digesting it, has helped me re-center and remember to put into practice all the practices Sakyong Mipham writes of.
You can't help but love his down-to-earth style. He writes simply but strongly.
If you want it to, this book will help change your life.
A plan that works........2007-02-11
There are probably two self help books for every literate person in the world. Many are helpful, some are really useful but very few lead one to buy copies for all close relatives! Ruling Your World is the handbook I wish I had been issued when I was born. This book although simple to read spoke to the deepest places in my heart. Phrases still accompany me each day as I either plough through or waltz through the very normal situations of life as an employee in a large company, partner in a close friendship, parent of adult children and general citizen of the world.
The main message for me is that "me" and the "me" plan is the cause of many of my daily difficulties. It is possible and not so difficult to drop the "me" plan and open to this magical world where compassion for others is the key to long lasting joy.
Any person tired of their own suffering and open to a deeper experience will probably treasure this book and the gentle and sometimes awesome ancient wisdom it offers.
Quoting one of his beloved teachers Sakyong Mipham Rimpoche advises "some things can be accomplished with agression.... " Please read the book to get the complete instructions on how "everything can be accomplished".

Got this book for a Christmas present with my breadmaker. If you own a breadmaker, you need to have it too. The recipes are easy and very tasty. It contains the basics, some fancy loaves, and some specialty items like cinnamon rolls and different pizza doughs. A must have!

I must concur with the other reviewers. The recipes in this book always turn out great. I never have to adjust liquids/flour or anything. When I get creative with my own ingredients, I use basic recipe amounts from this book and modify flours, sugars, spices, etc. I can always count on these recipes to be right.

I recently purchased a bread machine (Williams Sonoma) and wanted to try different recipes. I bought a book "Bread Machine Baking" which had recipes scaled for my machine. I also found this one on Amazon and bought it too.
I have found that the recipes in this book actually turn out better, even with the lesser amount of yeast used. Each loaf has risen evenly and nicely, creating a beautiful and delicious loaf of bread.
I also prefer the way this book is laid out. It is spiral bound which allows it to lie flat, it has a good table of contents and the recipes are easy to read at a glance.
I highly recommend this book. Try the Egg and Oatmeal breads. So good and easy to make with ingredients you have on hand.

I about had it with my bread machine until I got this book. Every recipe I have tried is great. They say it's because other recipes call for too much yeast. Their proportions are a little different and it really works. Buy it and you'll have fresh bread in the house all the time. The Egg Bread is the best!

A Passion for Cindy Hale's Books!.......2004-03-19
Again we are treated to Cindy Hale's colorful prose, which puts you right there with the horses and tugs at your heartstrings. So often we - the horse-crazy - need to explain to others just why we are consumed with love for our gentle giant equine friends, and are at a loss for words. This book explains it like no other.
A Passion For Horses had me laughing, smiling and crying as I read through it all, especially reading about the brave Kathy Havens, who - a fighter to the end - didn't let something like stomach cancer get in the way of her time with her dear chestnut friend Bud. And the retirement ceremony of Pam Mahony's legenday Valor, who is still remembered fondly as one of those Once In A Lifetime Horses, and who will never be forgotten by those who saw him in the show ring.

I truly enjoyed reading about these everyday horselovers who have made horses the focal point of their lives. Some of the chapters made me cry because they were so very touching. Other times I laughed. Photos were great, too. Highly recommended for anyone who loves horses or animals.

this is my second Cindy Hale purchase and I was as pleased if not more so than the first. This book chronicles the passion and love that defies logic at times. Truly a wonderful book which I will recommend to others without hesitation.

I had to add my .02 here, because I feel that this book, while pretty and nicely organized, just doesn't offer that much information. If you know enough about plants and herbs to be craving such a reference, you are unlikely to be satisfied, unless you want this book specifically to round out your Scott Cunningham collection, or add a bit of balance to a reference shelf that already has a lot more herbal/plant info. Good luck!

I personally feel this is Scott Cunnginham's best book that he has written. Yes, his book Solitary Wicca is immensly popular, however, the information contained within this book is excellent!
Most forms of Witchcraft and Wicca utilize herbs and natural objects to create charms and craft spells. This book is a gread addition to any witch's library and will really help them get a better feel of what herbs you can use for different things ....
I also found the easy reference tables in the back of the book very helpful when trying to find herbs that have certain virtues.
I've had my copy and it is definitely getting pretty worn from use.

Although Scott Cunningham's works have been around for a long time, they are one of the best sources for anyone who is looking for the magical use of herbs as opposed to the medicinal. I find this book to be very easy to read and understand. And, Scott has placed cautions next to the herbs that could pose a potential danger. I've started my own library of his works and will continue to collect them until I have everything he has written.

Good ideas but lacks what's needed to follow thru.......2007-05-03
Although this book has many cute ideas, it has a resource guide in the back that gives the website or name of only a fraction of the products. I wanted to be able to find the brand and paint color names used as well as a specific bumper and sheet set in a bedroom that would have gone perfectly in the room I'm designing and none of that information was not listed. Very frustrating. I'll keep looking for a better book.

I bought this book (although I think of it more like a cataloge with just over 100 pgs.& soft cover)in search of unique ideas for painting a baby nursery and I found a few. The book contains several themes and decor as well as useful ideas for furniture in children's and babies rooms alike.

I usually don't find what I need in these types of books, one of many in a serial of themes, but "Ideas for Great Baby Rooms" really surprised me. I noticed it at a friend's house and after flipping through the pages I had to buy one for my library. At first you'll be swept away by the beautiful full page photographs and then when you go back and begin to read the book (so often one buys decorating books for the pictures alone, but this is an exception to that rule) you'll discover there is actually a lot of useful information as well. Every topic is covered from figuring out your budget, to safety, nursery themes (or not), shopping lists, arranging the floor plan, bargain hunting, and what to do if you don't have much time.
I appreciate all of the options the author offers at each turn, and her encouragement to find your own style by using the examples in the book as a creative starting point. Many of these nurseries have a personalized feel rather than looking like a cutout from a retailer's catalog (only a couple nurseries looked dated or overdone). This book is more than inspirational, it is also informative and I find myself returning to it often.

I found Great Baby Rooms quite helpful. There are several styles of nurseries ranging from traditional to contemporary. I was able to show my husband nurseries similar to the ideas in my mind and he was able to agree or disagree on my selections.
