Light On The Road To Woodstock........2007-09-10
This contains three good reads. It has fine plots, descriptive characterizations, & smooth writing. Cadfael is a wondering Welsh soldier with a huge heart, but feels that a big change is needed in his life after coming home from the Crusades. He soon rescues an English monk from Cadfael's own master, & tensions abound. Not so surprisingly, he realizes that the serenity of being a monk is what he now needs. Jump fifteen years to "The Price Of Light," where Cadfael is now deeply settled as the abbey's apothecary & herbalist. This one was the best of the three stories. I won't spoil it by divulging the details, just read it for yourself. The third story "Eye Witness," is about a violent theft of the abbey's rents. Here cadfael is the dogged detective who has to sort out a myriad of possible suspects. Can a witness help, or is Cadfael alone? To a certain degree these are condensed medieval mystery soap opera's. But, far superior to most anything that we are used to. These stories made the twelfth century come to life in vivid pictures. For that alone, it deserved four stars.
I am a fan of Brother Cadfeal.......2007-03-23
Brother Cadfeal is one of my favorite characters in fiction.
The one with the insight.......2006-09-12
This book is composed of three short stories.
The first, Light on the Road to Woodstock, is recount of how Cadfael came to God. It's interesting to see Cadfael in the [but only slightly] different mode of soldier. However, his decision to join the brotherhood is not especially believable, perhaps even to Peters, who only sets up the situation then ends the story in one fell swoop. The rest of the story is fine, the characters solid and the writing fluid.
The second, The Price of Light, brings come-uppance to Hamo FitzHamon, a `gross feeder, heavy drinker, self indulgent lecher, harsh landlord and a brutal master'. Sounds like he deserved it, no? Romance triumphs again but there is a small mystery which Cadfael solves and the plot is resolved so neatly it is a pleasure to read.
The third story, Eye Witness, is a thin, almost transparent, out of kilter oddball, which serves mostly to point out the absolute importance of the romantic subplot for Peters. It's not just padding or detail. Without romance there is no emotional core to her stories and they become mechanical and not terribly believable. Even the characters become brittle without the mojo of romance. In this story there is no romance
History and Mystery.......2006-01-17
I enjoy history and a good mystery and "A Rare Benedictine" offers both. We have three solid stories, each adding a bit more to the life of a favorite fictional brother who inhabits a more real world.
Cadfael's returned to England and entry into the Benedictine Order are chronicled as of the first mystery. Cadfael's observations, and his ability to understand and empathizes with transgressors makes him an even more likable. And Cadfael is likeable, and I appreciate his sense of justice in the very difficult time he lives in, because he laws of the land and the punishments are simple and brutal, and the monk does his best to balance the justice with common sense.
The stories and the character are refreshing, and it's not surprising that Cadfael is still as popular as he is.
Insight into the remarkable Brother Cadfael.......2005-06-16
I had not read a Cadfael book for a few years. Picking up this one made me want to return to "A Morbid Taste For Bones" and to plow through the entire, 20-book series.
How Cadfael dealt with the theft of two candlesticks from the abbey church in "The Price of Light" left me with tears in my eyes.
These short stories reminded me of why I love Brother Cadfael so much -- his humanity, his compassion and his commitment to what is right, even when it goes against what the great and powerful would call "justice."

Book Description
1923. What was the greatest fault of Ayesha, She-Who-Must-be-Obeyed? Surely a vanity so colossal that, to take one out of many examples, it persuaded her that her mother died after looking upon her, fearing lest, should she live, she might give birth to another child who was less fair. At least, as her story shows, it was vanity, rather than love of the beauteous Greek, Kallikrates, that stained the hands of She with his innocent blood and, amongst other ills, brought upon her the fearful curse of deathlessness while still inhabiting a sphere where Death is lord of all. Thus it seemed that by denial she would have escaped the net of many woes in which she is still entangled and of Ayesha, Daughter of Wisdom yet Folly's Salve, there would have been no tale to tell and there would have been no lesson to be learned. But Vanity - or was it Fate? - led her down another road.
Book Description
Using the vivid, poignant and personal stories of the members of a website support group she founded (www.depressionfallout.com), Anne Sheffield, the author of two highly acclaimed books on depression, provides an honest record of what happens to a love relationship once depression enters the picture, and offers solid advice on what the non–depressed partner can do to improve his or her own life and the relationship.
Of the millions of people who suffer from a depressive illness, few suffer in solitude. They draw the people they love – spouses, parents, children, lovers, friends – into their illness. In her first book, How You Can Survive When They're Depressed, Anne Sheffield coined the phrase 'depression fallout' to describe the emotional toll on the depressive's family and close friends who are unaware of their own stressful reactions and needs. She outlined the five stages of depression fallout (confusion, self–doubt, demoralisation, anger, and the need to escape) and explained that these reactions are a natural result of living with a depressed person.
Customer Reviews:
disappointed--not what I expected.......2007-08-23
While the author's stages of depression that a couple goes through seemed to be pretty accurate, I was very disappointed by the overall tone of the book. It seemed to me that she basically advocated that the non-depressed partner leave in just about all situations.
I recently went through an injury which took over 3 months to heal, and during that time, my partner and I went through the stages as described. That's why I was excited about getting this book for both of us to read, so that we could understand why I was depressed and why he was feeling the way he was feeling about our relationship. Instead, the book advocates eventually giving up on the relationship and getting out.
Needless to say, my partner didn't need to read that! It didn't really offer any advice about how to work your way back to what you had before the depression-causing event, so I'm giving this a big thumbs down.
Wonderful.......2007-06-27
This book is a godsend. I thought I was having a breakdown until I read this book. I learned that my symptoms were being caused by the depressed person in my life. This book explains how your depression fallout mirrors the depressed person's own illness. You get dragged along for the ride (so to speak). If you are having difficulty in a relationship due to depression, you must read this book.
Unbelievably Misguided.......2007-01-15
I purchased this book for my husband who over the course of our marriage has experienced the challenges and set backs of my depression. I was not depressed when we married and was not aware of the numerous family members who suffer from depression because it wasn't talked about. I read the book first and find it difficult to believe that someone who claims to suffer from depression could have written it. This book seems much more accusatory and places a great deal of blame on the depressed person without any sign of empathy at all.
Depression is not a choice. It is a debilitating illness. The stigma of depression needs to be removed so that families like mine and millions of others are not ashamed to talk about it. I am not ashamed of my depression because I know it is not my fault but many people are and that keeps them from getting the help they need.
It is difficult for any person to live with someone who is depressed and I admire those who do. But the accusations and criticisms made in this book lead me to believe the author has unresolved anger toward that person in her life that was depressed. I think this book is terribly misguided and will unfortunately do more harm than good. I believe there must be better, more objective references out there for the spouses and loved ones of those suffering from depression.
Extraordinary read!.......2007-01-12
As one who has been or is suffering from the fallout of depression, I can say without a doubt this is the best book I have read and I've read quite a few. It involves not only the depressed person, but speaks to the loved ones who are in agony and turmoil right along with the depressed person. I have read this book more than once and go back to various chapters from time to time. I most highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they are a victim of "depression fallout"!
Amazing, calming resource.......2006-08-13
I wish I had read this book a long time ago, when my boyfriend's depression started. The information is pertinent and it gives tangible advice on what tp do for yourself and your depressed partner.
Book Description
Winning unanimous praise on its publication and now available in paperback from Grove Press, Much Depends on Dinner is a delightful and intelligent history of the food we eat. Presented as a meal, each chapter represents a different course or garnish. Borrowing from Byron's classic poem "Don Juan" for her title ("Since Eve ate apples, much depends on dinner"), writer Margaret Visser looks to the most ordinary American dinner for her subject - corn on the cob with butter and salt, roast chicken with rice, salad dressed in lemon juice and olive oil, and ice cream - submerging herself in the story behind each food. In this indulgent and perceptive guide we hear the history of Corn Flakes, why canned California olives are so unsatisfactory (they're picked green, chemically blackened, then sterilized), and the fact that in Africa, citrus fruit is eaten rind and all. For food lovers of all kinds, this unexpectedly funny and serious book is a treasure of information, shedding light on one of our most favorite pastimes.
Customer Reviews:
An extraordinary, memorable and highly enjoyable read.......2005-09-08
With this book Margaret Visser single-handedly launched the rash of single-subject books that have proliferated over the past two decades. And this one remains the best of them. She has a light touch, a sharp eye and a brilliant capacity for communicating the minutiae of her extensive research. She devotes a chapter to the history of each ingredient in a simple, everyday meal (sweetcorn, salt, butter, chicken, rice, lettuce, olive oil and icecream) and she takes the reader on a fantastic journey through history, mythology and contemporary culture. Everyone interested in food should have a copy.
Fascinating facts about the mundane.......2004-05-18
This book is an exploration into the science and lore of common foods. In the introduction, the author notes that the topic is far too broad to be covered in any detail in a single volume, so she has restricted herself to examining 9 ingredients found in a simple dinner menu: corn with salt and butter, chicken with rice, lettuce with olive oil and lemon juice, and ice cream. Each subsequent chapter takes up one of these ingredients in turn. At the end of the book there is an extensive section of references, organized first by general references and encyclopedias, and then by specific references corresponding to each chapter. There is also an index.
The material in each chapter is quite varied, ranging from history, mythology, science, and economic botany, to health concerns and environmental issues. We read about such topics as the history of corn flakes, the significance of salt-making for the Indian independence movement, and the preservation of lettuce through irradiation or sprinkling with sulphite. All in all, the book is quite fascinating, with many facts and figures for those interested in food history and culture.
History culture and folklore.......2001-11-16
Margaret Visser takes typical components of an American meal (corn, salt, butter, chicken, rice, lettuce, olive oil, lemon juice, ice cream), and shows the reader what they tell us about our history and culture. It is one of the effects of mass production that we have very little idea how our products are produced, and for those people who share an interest for food, why people eat what they do, and the beliefs people hold about food, this book will be fascinating. It is not just a collection of tidbits of useless trivia; there is a steady theme of the food being discussed in each chapter. At the same time, it is not just about the particular foods she chooses as her chapter titles. With Visser, you find out that not only do our behaviors of consumption have far reaching effects that are largely unnoticed by the general public, but also that the foods we eat have long, unthinkable histories that determine our attitudes towards them.
Makes you more aware of the world around you.......2001-11-04
I'm the type of person who when I learn about things around me, I see them differently ever after that and they become part of me. This book told me so many things - about salt, butter, corn, etc. Example: Coca Cola was first made from the coca leaf, which contains cocaine, plus the kola nut. It was touted as an innocent "soft" drink. In 1903 the Coca Cola company (without announcement) removed all traces of cocaine. This is one of those books which increases your awareness of the world around you.
absolutely fascinating / one of my all time favorites.......2001-07-05
Visser begins by stating that "The extent to which we take everday objects for granted is the precise extent to which they govern and inform our lives." She then discusses the shape of chairs, the shape and configuration of forks, things we just don't think about every day. Visser constructs a menu of simple, taken-for-granted foods -- corn with salt & butter, chicken with rice, lettuce with olive oil and lemon juice, and ice cream. She the devotes a chapter to each course, providing more details about corn, salt & butter than you could ever imagine -- and it's all fascinating; corn, for example, touches just about everything we eat (except fish) -- all canned foods are bathed in liquids containing corn, nearly all paper, cardboard and plastic packaging depends on corn products, soft drinks contain corn-based coloring and high fructose corn syrup, corn touches ketchup, ice cream, pickles, instant coffee, insecticides, soap -- just about everything. Visser describes how corn plants grow, the origins of corn, how corn is eaten, the development of the original health food - corn flakes (with a fascinating discussion of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his efforts at the Battle Creek Sanitorium), corn farming around the world. It's not dull or laborious or academic -- it's fun, easy reading. After corn, Visser moves on to salt, then butter -- again, in delightful detail.
I'd recommend this book to anyone with a penchant for non-fiction, particularly a food lover, a history buff, or a science buff. Informative, well-researched, delightful fun.

a great resource to have on hand.......2006-01-10
I own and have read many natural pet care books, but this book really seems to cover everything. Dr. Newman takes a complicated subject and makes it much easier for me to understand. I feel much more confident about the changes I am making in my cats lives. This just made sense to me.
Book Description
What do Honus Wagner baseball cards, Queen Anne side chairs, and 19th-century ceramic lions have in common? At first glance, very little. Yet Evaluating Your Collection sets out to discuss this wide range of things that people collect, in order to guide them to a greater level of knowledge.
Is an object really worth the price? How does one know what to look for? Can one recognize fakes and invisible repairs? What about color, finish, and form? In 1961, Charles F. Montgomery, Winterthur's first director, articulated a system for educating the eye and appraising the quality of an object. His fourteen points of connoisseurship, along with additions by Winterthur curators, conservators, and educators, form an unbeatable system. Understanding them, and how they interrelate, equips readers with a basic expertise necessary to operate in the world of antiques.
Compact, reader-friendly, and illustrated in full color with objects largely from Winterthur's outstanding collection, this and future series volumes provide invaluable advice. Armed with tips from the experts, your trips to estate auctions, flea markets, or your grandmother's attic will never be the same.

Book Description
Samuels's collection of critical essays gives body and scope to the subject of nineteenth-century sentimentality by situating it in terms of "women's culture" and issues of race. Presenting an interdisciplinary range of approaches that consider sentimental culture before and after the Civil War, these critical studies of American literature and culture fundamentally reorient the field. Moving beyond alignment with either pro- or anti-sentimentality camps, the collection makes visible the particular racial and gendered forms that define the aesthetics and politics of the culture of sentiment. Drawing on the fields of American cultural history, American studies, and literary criticism, the contributors include Lauren Berlant, Ann Fabian, Susan Gillman, Karen Halttunen, Carolyn L. Karcher, Joy Kasson, Amy Schrager Lang, Isabelle Lehuu, Harryette Mullen, Dana Nelson, Lora Romero, Shirley Samuels, Karen Sanchez-Eppler, Lynn Wardley, and Laura Wexler.
Book Description
Peeling back the layers of plantation landscapes, Adams reveals connections between seemingly disparate features of modern culture, suggesting that they remain haunted by the force of the unnatural equation of people as property.
