Her anxieties grow when her friend Josse d’Acquin is brought to Hawkenlye, half-dead from blood poisoning. Then a body is discovered, and one of the sisters goes missing. In order to discover the truth behind Alba’s flight to Hawkenlye, Helewise sets off for Ely, where she uncovers a clever and chilling network of lies.

A light and quick read ..........2007-07-26
The fourth book in the Hawkenlye mystery series is a short quick read. It's set in medieval times (circa 1190) in an Abbey in East Anglia. The plot is a simple one with a predictable outcome.
Three sisters arrive at the Abbey with no place to go. Both parents are dead. One exhibits strange and violent behavior. Soon, a pilgrim to a nearby holy attraction dies mysteriously.
When the Abbess investigates, she uncovers another violent death. The outcome is predictable. There's a very minor romance sub-plot that adds a bit of spice to an otherwise mediocre story.
If you like Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series or Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma series, you will probably like this book. But if you prefer brain-teasing puzzles or a book rich with accurate history, then this book probably is not for you.
Everything is Not as it Seems.......2006-08-28
Alys Clare's novels are like a breath of fresh air. I love medieval murder mysteries and there are certainly a lot of them about (thank goodness), but the authors books breathe new life into the period and her will they won't they situation with Helewise and Sir Josse, holds the reader's attention as well. Don't be swayed into thinking that these books are written with the female reader in mind. They are for everybody, young and old, male or female. Alys Clare lives in Kent where the Hawkenlye mysteries are set.
The peace and quiet of the Abbey at Hawkenlye has been disturbed by the arrival of a new nun and her two young sisters. They have been recently orphaned and Alba the eldest has had to give up her post at a convent in Ely to get her sisters as far away as possible from the scene of their grief.
However Helewise, the Abbess at Hawkenlye is not sure that the gesture is solely for the benefit of the young girls, after all Alba is known by all to be a mean-minded young woman. Helewise's anxiety is increased when her friend Sir Josse is brought to the Abbey half dead from blood poisoning. Then a body is discovered and one of the sisters goes missing. Helewise sets off the Ely to discover the real reason for Alba leaving the convent there . . .
12th Century Mystery a Great Read!.......2003-05-13
This Hawkenlye mystery (fourth in the series) is a must for those who enjoyed Ellis Peters's books. However, it stands on its own, with a fresh approach to medieval crime novels. The author provides an engrossing tale, finely drawn characters in Abbess Helewise and her friend, Josse d'Acquin, and a realistic sense of the time period.

A wonderfully humorous journey of fun with dragons........1997-08-03
A light hearted fantasy adventure, A Baroque Fable is a novel I would recommend to any lover of humorous fantasy, silly songs, bored royalty, fairy tales, love, maidens turned dragon, or crompets. It may not be a literary masterpiece to be studied by captive students for centuries to come, but it is a highly entertaining tale well worth the read

Book Description
Depression is a common and debilitating problem among women, though it rarely occurs in a vaccum. As Susan Nolen-Hoeksemas original research shows, overthinkinga tendency to ruminate on problems rather than to seek solutionsoften co-exists with unhealthy eating habits and/or heavy drinking. In fact, 80 percent of women who report suffering from one of those also suffer from another. This groundbreaking book, written in a vivid narrative style that captures the complexities of womens lives today, explains how the three core problems of the Toxic Triangle reinforce one another, wreaking havoc on womens emotional well-being, physical health, relationships, and careers. Escape is possible, Nolen-Hoeksema assures us, for those who are already aware that they suffer from a serious problem as well as for the hundreds of thousands of others who have not yet examined the role that bingeing and purgingon negative thoughts, food, or alcoholplays in their lives. Nolen-Hoeksema shows women how to harness their emotional and interpersonal strengths to overcome the stress caused by a destructive relationship with food, alcohol, and overthinking so that they can fashion effective, healthier strategies for living the life they deserve.

Eating, Drinking, Overthinking.......2007-07-16
The author calls the cycle the Toxic Triangle. Many women spend all week carefully keeping themselves in check. They work hard at their jobs all day making sure that they don't say or do the wrong thing. After work, they continue to control their actions by only choosing healthy food in just the right quantities and abstaining from alcohol.
By Thursday or Friday, however, the frustration, pressure, and cravings becomes too much. These same controlled seemingly put together women decide to just have one glass of wine to unwind or just a few potato chips. This simple action starts a chain of excess which is turn fuels the desire to control which turns into a never-ending cycle.
Eating, Drinking, Overthinking brings this cycle of self abuse to light showing women what they are really doing to themselves, likely without even knowing it. The author uncovers the real reasons behind these actions and shows woman healthy ways that they can deal with both their emotions and their unreal expectations of themselves.
Help Really Is At Hand.......2007-02-02
Susan Nolen-Hoeksema has provided an informative and encouraging text book on her subject of the toxic triangle. I have learned so many things about myself and this problem and am at last hopeful of making some positive changes in my life.
Excellent insight for the intelligent reader.......2006-07-05
Loved this book, I have not read the author's first book, but that did not present any problems. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema offers some very plausible reasons for overeating/drinking in women. Her theories make sense and while I know quite well that there is no "magic pill" for this problem, I feel the info she offers gives me some tools to understand the problem and how I can better help myself. My one criticism of the book would be that I don't recollect any suggestions that the reader supplement the book by working with a psychotherapist trained in women's disorders. For most women, this would be crucial to the healing process.
Great Book For Women Who Suffer In Silence.......2006-01-31
I love the fact that this book was written and done so well. This subject is very dear to me - as I am a product of a family of women who suffered from this toxic triangle. The legacy was simply passed down from generation to generation. It was a hard thing to watch - and was a major reason why I chose to be a therapist.
What I love about this book is that it addresses the very issues that many women who suffer from "depression" rarely hear when they go for counseling or read the common depression literature out there. There is usually a combination of abuse - a deadly team of alcohol, food and despair. Not just despair. And they are all interrelated and play off of each other in the most horrible way.
Not one member of my family has yet been able to break free from this bermuda triangle. Its such a waste of time. Months, years, a whole lifetime will go by and you don't know where it went. If this is you - this book will serve as a valuable resource to direct you towards solutions. It's well done. Very thought out and chock full of valuable information. I highly recommend it.

Great Stuff from a Great Psychologist.......2006-01-27
When I saw that Susan Nolen-Hoeksema had a new book out, I had to take a look. Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema is well known to me from studying the biology and psychology of depression about ten years ago.
She has done research on "ruminative thinking", which she describes as "the tendency to respond to distress by focusing on the causes and consequences of your problems, without moving into active problem-solving." To put it more plainly-and less appetizingly-ruminative thinkers chew on thoughts excessively, like a cow chewing its cud.
Overthinking in this way can lead, in turn, to excess depression and anxiety. Then, to feel better, ruminators turn to food and alcohol. And then the process starts over, as overthinking about the overeating and drinking can occur.
Nolen-Hoeksema, along with a number of other eminent psychologists, has found that women suffer through this type of thinking at a much higher rate than men, which is at least partly responsible for women having double the rates of depression than men.
Since a lot of people are just getting over-or not getting over-the "holiday blues", I thought her book might provide particularly helpful advice for starting off the New Year. And after reading through the main premises of the book, I must say I was happy to have taken the time. Though the book is meant for women, it's also possible for men to suffer through this "toxic triangle" of eating, drinking, and overthinking, so I can recommend it to anyone who feels they may go through this damaging process, which puts tremendous strain on our bodies and can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other disorders.
The most interesting piece of the puzzle for me is how overthinking can start a very physical stress process. Early in her career, Nolen-Hoeksema wrote many papers with Martin Seligman on the phenomenon of "explanatory style". This relates to how people explain positive or negative events to themselves.
Pessimists largely believe that they are primarily responsible for the bad things that happen to them, that it won't ever change, and that it applies to everything they do. Optimists believe the bad thing that happen to them are other people's fault, that it will go away quickly, and that the event is isolated and doesn't bleed over into other areas of their lives.
And for positive occurrences, the exact opposite happens. Pessimists believe other people had more of a role than they did, that it's short-lived, and that it won't happen to them again. Optimists believe they were directly responsible for the positive occurrence, that it will occur every time, and that it is an indication of the fact that they're good at just about everything.
With a pessimistic explanatory style and a ruminant thinking personality, the "pity party" just goes on and on and starts to relate to every area of a life. Nolen-Hoeksema presents stream of consciousness ruminations that most people can relate to by starting with a particular, isolated problem and blowing it up to be a life consuming weakness.
With her long history as an experimental psychologist, she shows exactly how this can lead to overeating and excessive drinking quite easily. She provides a mental model of how this happens that is perfectly matched to the current biological mechanisms believed to cause these harmful binges.
One of the weaknesses of books by long-time psychologists is that they are heavy on the problems and light on the solutions. This offering by Nolen-Hoeksema makes a great attempt to shed light on some solutions; however, more could be done.
The first step in any recovery, though, is to recognize that a problem exists-in this case, a misdirected and harmful thinking pattern. And Nolen-Hoeksema very clearly shows how to recognize the overthinking problem. I highly recommend the book for those who think (over overthink) that they may have this affliction.

This is exactly what i was looking for!!.......2005-08-11
I'm Japanese, and this book is exactly what i was waiting to be published for myself and my non-japanese friends!
All the recipes are very simple and easy to follow and come with wine suggestions.
I also enjoyed the beautiful pictures of every dish!
What i hate most is a cooking book without picures. It's like a reading a novel and very boring. I need a cooking book to not only tell me how to prepare but also show me what I'm cooking.
This book has met all the things I'm looking for in a cooking book.
I've bought this book a few times already to give to my friends.
It makes a great gift!

Champagne and sushi, both served fresh and cold.......2005-05-14
Japan is not a country known for its love of wine. Foreign visitors are often horrified to see the bottle of red that they ordered arrive straight from the refrigerator, nicely chilled. The national beverages are beer and whiskey along with native drinks sake and shochu. Beer, whiskey, sake and shochu are all wonderful tipples, but often wine-lovers would like to pop a bottle of something to go along with their Japanese feast. Chef Machiko Chiba and Wine Expert JK Whelehan decided to take up this challenge, and have assembled a fine collection of paired-dishes in this cookbook, "Japanese Dishes for Wine Lovers."
Chiba has created a selection of dishes more "wine friendly" than traditional Japanese foods, fishes with thick sauces and light vegetable salads that would never appear in a restaurant in Japan. As she states in her introduction, these are dishes that she created over the years working in New York, adapting Japanese foods to suit Western tastes and trying to create dishes that partner better with the more wine-friendly West. Ingredients bounce back and forth between Western and Japanese, with interesting blends such as the "Avocado Tofu Salad" and "Seafood with Carrot Dressing." There is a good blend of vegetable, meat and fish dishes to suit any eating habits.
Whelenan has taking these dishes, and found a reciprocal wine to go with each creation. In his introduction, Whelenan talks about the needs of pairing wines with the Asian taste of "umami," a fifth taste associated with Asian food separate from sweet, sour, salty and bitter. His essay on umami is quite enlightening in itself, and a very interesting read. He also touches on traditional Japanese ingredients such as soy sauce, mirin, wasabi, and shichimi seven-spice pepper, and the challenges of matching wine to each flavoring. His choices favor sparkling wines, which emulate the bubbles and freshness of the beer traditionaly served with these dishes, and champagne is a definite favorite to accompany foods such as sushi.
The flaws in "Japanese Dishes for Wine Lovers" are in two main areas. First, Chiba, a professional chef, has created recipes with ingredients that are obscure and difficult to find even in a Japanese grocery store, and a specialty store will need to be found in order to make these recipes as written. Some, such as the Japanese citrus fruit yuzu, are quite necessary but many more serve as little more than a garnish and can be substituted easily. Unfortunately, Chiba does not make any suggestions for substitutions for these hard-to-find ingredients or suggestions as to where to acquire them, so you are on your own. Secondly, Whelenan has paired a separate wine for every single dish, many of which are little more than appetizers. The portions are all quite small, in keeping with Japanese-style serving of many dishes of small sizes. An extraordinary number of bottles of wine would need to fill a table if one cooked a meal based on this cookbook. A few balanced courses would have been nice, with a single wine that would work for the meal.
From this, "Japanese Dishes for Wine Lovers" succeeds as a cookbook first, and as wine-paring advice second. Chiba's recipes are innovative and delicious. The "Salmon Marinated in Sake," "Silver Cod Simmered in Spicy Miso," "Tofu and Salmon Stuffed Peppers" and "Deep-Fried Sea Bream with Burdock" have all been absolutely delicious. The dishes are presentation-quality, great for inviting friends over for a meal when you are looking to impress, and with flavors balanced enough to suit Western and Japanese tastes. Whelenan's introduction serves as mini-lesson on pairing wine to this type of food, and an adventurous host will probably be able to use that just as much as his specific advice when planning and preparing a meal.

The Invented Indian: Cultural Fictions and Government Politics
ASIN: 0881337358 |
Book Description
Cultural, ethnic, and personal identity form the central core of these essays that examine the lives and experiences of fourteen individuals, and their much broader applications. Biography is used not as an end in itself, but as a method of improving and intensifying understanding of a variety of social and cultural processes that are significant phenomena in the long history of changing relationships between the diverse peoples of North America. The lives of these selected subjects provide a broad sampling: their careers span several centuries; they lived in many parts of North America; and they are a diverse cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds. Their lives were spent on cultural margins, on the frontiers between the predecessors of ethnic groups familiar to us today; conflict, discrimination and repression were commonly their lot. These individuals coped with their frustration in turbulent eras and contexts. How they did so provides useful lessons for us today. By using biography as a magnifying glass, peering closely at the experiences of particular individuals, this broad sampling aims at revealing more texture and intricacy than what emerges from other types of anthropological and historical studies and at generating some new insights.
