quick comment.......2000-02-22
I have not reviewed other cookbooks for diabetics as a caveat. My purpose in reviewing this book was to see if it would be suitable for a friend who is a gourmet cook and reluctant to be relegated to boring food 'just for the sake of her diabetic care'. There are a wide variety of exciting gourmet recipes sure to please the palate. Each recipe also contains complete nutrition information with which to fit these meals into the Joslin exchange program. I recommend the book to every diabetic wishing to put some pzazz into their meal plan.

Customer Reviews:
I'm a passionate convert.......2004-08-20
My husband and I "discovered" Indian food on our honeymoon nine years ago in, of all places, Seattle (on our way to Alaska). It was fabulous, of course. When we returned home we had a strong desire to replicate those meals. We live in New Mexico, now, and at the time lived in West Texas. I probably don't really need to describe the paucity of restaurants that would satisfy our needs. So, we went cookbook looking.
We found this absolute treasure. We have made numerous dishes from this cookbook and loved them all. We have an absolute favorite. Dhaniya Murgh (Coriander Chicken) gets made in this house so much we both could do it without the instructions (and the instructions are complex). It's the dish we make in huge quantities and freeze. It's the dish we serve company.
The cookbook tells you about Indian cooking and how to mix what with what. There are sections on lentils, on chicken, on meat. You even get a recipe for making the strange cheeses and the wonderful raita that are served alongside the meals.
It's one of those cookbooks where you drool reading the recipes even if there's no picture right there (all pics are in the center).
One thing: the guy's pretty proud of all the people he knows. He's a name dropper. Funny thing, maybe because I'm only 31, but I know NONE of those people. Never heard of them. Oh well, the man can cook AND he can teach you how, too.
My husband now experiments based on what he's learned from this book.
Want some adventure in your cooking? Looking for Indian food that doesn't call for Cream of Chicken soup? This is the book!
Passionate Author, Mediocre Recipes.......2004-01-22
I've had this book for a few years now, and I'm finally ready to give up on it. The only problem with this book is that none of the food I've made from it is good. I have to twist arms to use up leftovers.
I'm really sorry to say this because I absolutely love Indian food and of all my Indian cookbooks, this one has the easiest, quickest recipes with commonly found ingredients. Merchant doesn't send you on a hunt for fresh curry leaves, for instance. And nothing I've made from this book took much work. The dishes fall into place effortlessly.
Perhaps I've tried exactly the wrong recipes, but looking back through the book, I see page after page of notes to myself not to repeat this dish or that one. I agree with the reviewer who comments that Merchant overuses Dijon mustard. It just tastes out of place.
For simple recipes suitable to a home cook, I'd suggest Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking. Like this one, it has no hard-to-obtain fresh ingredients and it has no complicated processes to follow. The results from her books are more reliable.
I'll remain a die-hard fan of Merchant himself and of his movies.
For enthusiasts of ethnic and regional cuisines.......2001-04-25
Ismail Merchant's Passionate Meals is a compendium of more than two hundred Indian-inspired recipes adapted for the Western kitchen. From Bambai Bhajya (Bombay Vegetable Fritters), Besan Walla Chana (Black Chick-Peas with Gram Flower Sauce), and Murgh Masala (Spicy Chicken Curry), to Bhuna Gosht (Pan-Roasted Lamb), Machli Dam Masala (Cod in Tomato and Basil Sauce), and Nimbu ka Achar (Sour Lemon Pickle), Ismail Merchant's Passionate Meals offers a mouth-watering, appetite satisfying spectrum of dishes to enhance any meal. Highly recommended for enthusiasts of ethnic and regional cuisines, Ismail Merchant's Passionate Meals treats the reader to Merchant's engaging personal anecdotes and reflections on Indian customs.
Truly lives up to its provocative title.......2001-03-03
Ismail Merchant's Passionate Meals: The New Indian Cuisine For Fearless Cooks And Adventurous Eaters truly lives up to its provocative title! From A Better Gin and Tonic, Taza Kumbhi ka Shorba (Fresh Mushroom Soup), and Nimbu Masoor Dal (Lemon Lentils), to Tamatar Gosht (Tomato Lamb Curry), Sarson-walla Jhingha (Mustard Shrimp), and Naaspati ka Murabba (Stewed Spiced Pears), this compendium of delicious, memorable, dishes are adapted for Western cooks and will prove irresistible for gourmet dining and liven up any family meal.
Great recipes, seems geared towards entertaining.......2000-08-15
I love many of the recipes in this book, and I have not had any real trouble with any of the ones I've tried. That having been said, I wish more of the recipes were geared towards 2-4 people, instead of 6, or, in many cases, 10-12. I also agree with the reviewer who commented on the fat content of many recipes, but I have found that it's not too hard to cut down on butter or oil most of the time. All in all, I think it's a pretty good book, and it's made me an Indian food ADDICT!
Book Description
"At the dawn of the 21st century, with a definitive cure for cancer still so elusive, Clerens and Clifton have written a remarkable book, one that documents the journey of one small dog's triumph over cancer. In Sparky Fights Back not only does one find inspiration in the knowledge that a diagnosis of cancer in one's dog is not an automatic death sentence for a beloved pet, but also invaluable information on how a dog's 'human companions' can become proactive in healing an ailing dog. This is a 'must read' for those whose lives are filled with the extraordinary affection that only dogs can bring." --- Louis E. V. Nevaer, Author, Economist and Founding Board Member, Animal Cancer Foundation. ---- A special supplement "If Your Dog Gets Cancer" offers direct practical advice.---- Foreword by Samantha J. Schmidt, Director, Animal Cancer Foundation.
Download Description
You might expect a book about a dog who gets cancer to be a depressing experience. For "Sparky Fights Back," nothing could be further from the truth. Here is a true tale, well-told with great honesty and humor that readers have found "inspiring," triumphant," and "riveting." This story will reward all animal lovers, for it's about how a dog taught his owners courage and persistence in the face of a great challenge. Through Sparky, they found that hope can open doors - doors where miracles can pass through. Along the way, the reader will pick up much practical knowledge about fighting cancer. Indeed, the authors' "shock and awe" approach is a model for battling this disease in humans as well as animals. After finishing the uplifting story, caretakers of cancer dogs will find direct advice in a special section, "If Your Dog Gets Cancer." And there is and appendix full of important information and resources.
Customer Reviews:
sparky.......2007-10-06
i thought the book was just ok.it really bothered me to feel that the authors felt the need to almost apologize for going to what they thought was great lengthsto help sparky. i dont mean to imply that they dont deserve credit for all that they have done..it is just that i think this should be a given for dog lovers. i have 2 dogs fighting cancer..one has bladder cancer and 3 months after that diagnosis another was digonsed with lymphoma. i thought i would gain more insight regarding the specifics of the treatment and supplements...i was less interested in the personal anecdotes regarding sparkys life although they were cute..i just wanted more information. i thought the better book out there was helping your dog with cancer...a story about a siberian husky with lymphoma...a lot of technical information that helped me make my decision regarding treatment. on the whole i found the book to be too generic and insulting to dog lovers who shouldnt feel the need to apologize for treating their lovable dog with everything possible.
Inspirational story that made me feel hopeful.......2006-08-02
I have a cat with cancer, not a dog, but there isn't much info out there about cats and cancer (and taking my cat to the oncologist, we have yet to share the waiting room with any other cats...just dogs) so I have been reading books like this and "Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs", to supplement the reading I can find that actually refers to cats.
Sparky's story is very inspirational. The only other person I know who had cats with cancer...well...the cats died about four months after diagnoses, which didn't leave me feeling very hopeful. Reading this book was like having a friendly aquaintance tell you their positive story, which makes a nice change from what I usually get when people find out my cat has cancer...they get really quiet and act like she's basically dead already.
This book is well written and is an easy and enjoyable read that caused me to tear up a few times. It reminded me that it's worth fighting for my cat rather than just giving up, and it also pointed out to me that, although many people I know think spending many thousands of dollars trying to save a pet is crazy...there are plenty of other crazy people like me out there that would do the exact same thing.
The book was not really useful in terms of knowing what I was going to have to do with my cat...I thought it might be a sort of guide showing me the steps her treatment would follow, but it's probably a very bad idea to use this book that way because there are so many kinds of cancers and there are new research and protocols being developed all the time. My cat's treatment plan includes chemo and radiation and all that, but in a different order and it all seems very different. She also won't usually eat or drink on her own (she has a tumor in her nasal cavity, above her soft pallete and she can't smell anything or breath through her nose most of the time) and has to be force fed a few times a day and has had to have subcutaneous fluids a few times. She also sneezes out blood and mucus sometimes...really gross and scary. I'm glad Sparky never went through anything like that, but I wish more people would share their story like Sparky's owners did...maybe some cat owners, or at least some dog owners that had some different experiences. I'm sure there will be books like that eventually, and I do hope they are as well written as this one.
A book of hope..........2004-11-29
This wonderful book is a joyous read! My own dogs, now gone almost twenty-five years, were constantly in my thoughts (and, not a few tears) as I read about the authors' love for their Sparky and the courageous and intelligent approach they used to help him regain his health after a diagnosis of cancer. Every reader of this inspiring book will surely recognize the absolute honesty of the authors' story. Dog lovers will immediately feel validation of the love they feel for their own "best friends" and people who have faced profound medical challenges will be strengthened in their resolve to actively participate in their own care, seek out skilled professionals and seek to beat the odds. Most of all, those people fond of love stories will find love on every page of "Sparky Fights Back" -- the love of a trusting animal, the love shown by medical professionals who seek to treat and cure animals, the love of a community of friends and neighbors who shared in and gave support to the idea that the life of one small dog could be saved. I finished the book with renewed hope from Sparky's example, that we too can face our own challenges with new vigor, take great joy in small things and find our own way to undiminished dignity no matter the difficulty of the battle to be fought.
Sparky Fights Back is a WINNER.......2004-11-16
This poignant tale of a spunky Australian terrier's heroic battle with cancer is both touching and riveting. And, it is a "page-turner" in the best sense of the phrase. The authors guide us through the struggle, joy, frustration, and ultimate success of Sparky's life, disease and cure. We come away with not only a large "Hurrah!" for Sparky - a lovable, yet individually willful canine with not a little quirkiness - but with a profound regard for his courageous master and mistress in their unwavering determination to explore every avenue that might provide a cure for their beloved pet.
While the owners' devotion to Sparky is palpable, the well-structured writing style is informative and researched, yet happily peppered with anecdotal humor as the dynamic between pet, master, and veterinarian are cleverly woven throughout. Dog lovers will laugh and cry over the telling of this book. But, to Clerens and Clifton's credit, the text never languishes into raw sentimentality. The meld of the scientific and emotional are united in an intelligent focus. In a supremely readable style, the authors present a compelling rendering of the joys and sorrows that come from loving a dog. At the book's conclusion, the reader will have bonded with both dog and masters.
Here is a hearty recommendation for a book in which all dog lovers will take pleasure, and those whose pets face a similar crisis as Sparky's, will savor.

Better than average.......2007-06-23
This book was obviously written by instructors. It takes you by the hand and leads you step-by-step through the design and construction of dozens and dozens of bargello pieces. It discusses repeats, compensation, resizing patterns, designing problems, etc. I understand that it's hard to find and may be expensive through the second-hand dealers. But you must have a birthday, anniversary, or something coming up soon. Don't you?

Book Description
June 12, 1952-only a local sportswriter showed up at the Eau Claire airport to greet a newly signed eighteen-year-old shortstop from Alabama toting a cardboard suitcase. "I was scared as hell," said Henry Aaron, recalling his arrival as the new recruit on the city's Class C minor league baseball team.
Forty-two years later, as Aaron approached the stadium where the Eau Claire Bears once played, an estimated five thousand people surrounded a newly raised bronze statue of a young "Hank" Aaron at bat. "I had goosebumps," he said later. "A lot of things happened to me in my twenty-three years as a ballplayer, but nothing touched me more than that day in Eau Claire." For the people of Eau Claire, Aaron's summer two years before his Major League debut with the Milwaukee Braves symbolizes a magical time, when baseball fans in a small city in northern Wisconsin could live a part of the dream.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully well-written addition to baseball history.......2003-01-08
This book is incredibly well written and offers the reader insight into an early part of Hank Aaron's life, but the book is so much more than that. It also vividly describes minor league baseball and its impact on one community. It delves into race relations in one Wisconsin city in the 1950s and today. It offers story after story, engagingly told, of how baseball affected lives of individuals and how individuals had an impact on the world of baseball, often through simply accepting someone like Aaron into their homes in an era where racial tension led too many to stare rather than welcome him. Poling's book is one of the most well-written sports histories I've read; I read the book in a day as I couldn't put it down. Granted, partly I was interested in it because I went to college in Eau Claire and lived in Duluth, Minnesota, for a couple of years (another city in the Northern League he discusses). However, I really believe that even those with no ties to Wisconsin but rather a love of baseball or an admiration for Aaron as a person and a baseball player will enjoy this book.
