Book Description

The nude photo of a teenage runaway shows up on a pornographic website, and the girl's father turns to Detective Chief Inspector Alan banks for help. But these are typical circumstances, for the runaway is the daughter of a man who's determined to destroy the dedicated Yorkshire policeman's career and good name. Still it is a case that strikes painfully home, one that Banks—a father himself—dares not ignore as he follows it's squalid trail into teeming London, and into a world of drugs, sex, and crime. But murder follows soon after—gruesome ,sensational, and, more than once—pulling Banks in a direction that he dearly does not wish to go: into the past and private world of his most powerful enemy, Chief Constable Jimmy Riddle.

5 out of 5 stars Crime Writing at its Best.......2007-05-02

Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and is the author of a number of previous novels featuring Chief Inspector Banks. He is the winner of numerous awards in the United States, Britain and Canada, and in 2002 he won the CWA Dagger in the Library. As I also come from Leeds the background to his stories is something that I have experienced first hand and because of this I have a special affection for his books. However they would be first class crime fiction wherever they were based.

Detective Chief Inspector Banks is at a low point in his life. His wife has finally left him to live with another man in London and his career is going nowhere thanks to a high ranking officer becoming more and more frustrated with Banks's methods of solving crime.

Maybe a move to the National Crime Squad would kick start his career? Maybe even another chance with Sandra? Then late one night he is summoned to the house of Chief Constable Riddle, which was strange in itself, as the Chief Constable is the senior officer who has been blighting Banks's career.

The Chief Constable's 16-year-old daughter Emily has run away and for once he is happy to allow Banks to use his unorthodox methods to find the girl and bring her back without any fuss. Will it be as simple as that?

4 out of 5 stars Well-Done Police Procedural.......2006-12-11

Robinson spins a very well-crafted novel about Inspector Banks and the other fascinating characters he encounters in his baliwick of Yorkshire. Robinson has a good eye and sharp ear for the psychological travails his characters face, often providing a nice counterpoint to his nicely honed plot. The magic of the Inspector Banks series is the author's careful pacing of the plot and the characterization which carry you (usually)gently to the end. This is not a fast-paced crime story that you can't set down. It's not like a shot of gin or vodka; but rather, like a fine single-malt Scotch which you'll savor to the end. Robinson has become one of my favorite authors and, for my money, ranks with the best of the authors of his genre.

4 out of 5 stars New discovery for me and worth beginning at the beginning.......2006-09-18

This is the first of this author's British police procedurals I've read (on a friend's recommendation), but it won't be the last. Alan Banks is a DCI of working class origins who relocated from the hectic pace of London to what he hoped would be a somewhat more sedate career in a smallish market town in north Yorkshire. While he's moderately well educated and pursues a wide range of personal interests, he's not a genius, a poet, or anything else really out of the ordinary. He's just a very dogged investigator who sometimes stretches the rules a bit more than he should. And that makes him unpopular in certain quarters, both inside and outside the police department, but he gets results. In this case, Banks gets caught up in the family problems of one of his principal critics, the local Chief Constable, who had even had him contemplating a request for transfer. The CC's sixteen-year-old daughter, a sultry wild child, has gone off to London and shacked up with a second-rate gangster and Banks is asked to go and rescue her -- quite unofficially, of course. At the same time, a local small-time crook has gotten himself shotgunned, leading to a broad investigation across several police districts. And Banks himself, now separated and facing divorce, and having apparently gone through a brief affair with his Detective Sergeant, is trying hard to sort out his own life. The characterizations are first-rate and the plot is interesting and entirely believable. Moreover, even though you probably think you've identified whodunit halfway through, late evidence will have you wondering. But there's no deus ex machina here. Very well done. This is the eleventh installment in the series and the frequent references to Banks's past history, both personal and professional, make it obvious that I should have started at the beginning -- which I certainly intend to do.

3 out of 5 stars Character-based.......2006-07-17

Robinson makes the world of his characters surround us enough to appreciate their confusion when faced with a mystery which, while of an archetype that's fairly guessable, unfolds well and in such a way that grants us compassionate insight into several types of lives. Scratch a mystery writer, find a literary novelist... Robinson can stumble awkwardly but there are no scenes that are outright doofus drops. Some of the details he includes show a touching tendency to observe human life in all of its mixed bag of glories and hilarious depravities. So far, this is my favorite book of Robinson's, because it is the most realistic in its vision of life.

4 out of 5 stars Not as great but still very good.......2006-06-25

I read In A Dry Season and then I decided to tackle the follow up to it. I must say that Peter Robinson is quite a brave soul. He had hit a home run with In A Dry Season and he very well could have done something similar, instead he went another direction. This book, the 11th in the series is much safer by virtue of the plot devising but more difficult by virtue of the fact that Robinson decided to change the way the story is told. This is by far the more conventional story, involving oversexed teenagers and casual drug use, a much more conventional setting for the murder. The usual cliches of gangsters, social climbing spouses, disagreeable bosses, all comes into play.

I thought the plotting was excellent, the characters were pretty well developed but not as well developed as In A Dry Season. Part of the reason is that the previous story took place in two disparate epochs so the detailed telling of both sides of the story was necessary. It was not necessary for this story so I think Robionson slacked off a tad. The continuing romance between Banks and Annie is very well done, it serves as a good background for when the main plot gets too heavy.

Robinson shows a very deft touch with the balance of the two story lines and he also deliciously complicates his plot. Even though this story may be of a more conventional gum shoe genre, it held my attention quite well and I read the book in one day, needless to say it was quite absorbing. The final twist on the story was somewhat shocking. I was able to see it only two or three pages ahead of the book. But I did not view the twist as a gimmick or a desperate attempt by a writer to save an ignominiously plotted story, instead it is a very natural yet unobvious plot turn which seemed to develop organically by the author.

I would recommend this book on its own, a fine murder mystery for anglophiles but especially Yorkshirephiles.

      3 out of 5 stars A Wind in Cairo.......2002-09-23

This is an entertaining work of historical fantasy, set during the Crusades.

Hasan, a young wastrel, finally goes too far: he rapes the daughter of his benefactor, a magus. In retaliation, the magus changes him into a horse. In this form, he must learn lessons of obedience and courage, and finally find redemption.

Tarr is a horsewoman, and her descriptions of Hasan in his horse form are wonderful. In addition, her writing flows well, and this story has much of the action that her later work tends to lack. Characters are generally attractive, and there are some wonderfully active and humorous scenes.

Something bothered me here, though, and that was the reduction of the medieval Islamic enslavement of women to a mere plot device, to be outwitted by the characters at will. As well, the subjugation of Islam's enemies, the whole idea of holy war, and the horrendous custom of male castration get, well, romanticized. As a reader I'm certainly more sensitive to these portrayals due to current events, but even taking the book purely on its own terms, I think that these themes deserve more serious and critical treatment than Tarr gives them.

      3 out of 5 stars Disapointing.......2002-06-03

I was looking for this book for a long time, so when I found a nice affordable copy I was very excited. But the book was quite disapointing - maybe part of my problem is that I have been looking for it for so long, but still it does not compare well to Tarr's other "Crusade" books, Alamut particularly, which is much better. Some of the problems I had with A Wind in Cairo is choppy writing, where one is not quite certain what refers to what, a lack of resolution about an event which causes Khamsin's transformation, and somehow the reverse transformation into a man seems oddly unconvincing. And despite trying not to judge the book by some minor plot events but I found the notion of Khamsin having a daughter disturbing, what cames of her, is she totally horse, does he worry about her when he returns to human shape? Very weird.

It's an interesting book, but Judith Tarr wrote better ones.

5 out of 5 stars REPRINT THIS BOOK!.......2000-03-16

This is a fabulously compelling story of magic, horses, and relationships. I lent my only copy to someone who didn't return it and now I want my daughter to read it. It provides a great view of the relationships between people and horses, but also between men and women.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous book for anyone who loves horses and magic!.......2000-01-02

This book, set in Cairo during the time of Saladin and the Crusades, focuses on a wealthy and foolish young Egyptian man, who insults a magician. As punishment, he is turned into an Arabian stallion, destined to be gelded and sold. But the daughter of his family's sworn enemy buys him, and he is then forced to be trained to be her riding animal. Eventually, he must discover what true love and loyalty is when his mistress goes to war with Saladin. And will he ever again have a human mouth to tell her he loves her? This is a fast paced and wonderful read for anyone who loves horses, rides, trains, and dreams of racing across the sands of time, or believes true love can always be victorious.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite re-reads..........1998-12-28

This is the story of a young man who, in punishment for a crime, is transformed into a horse by a Arab magician. He becomes the warhorse of the magician's daughter, with whom he falls in love. The young woman goes to war in the army of Saladin. A great deal of creative history (a la Mary Renault and others of Tarr's books) is given, as is a lot of fascinating period detail. This is a great story for those who like horses (and horse training) and fantasy and history. If you like Judith Tarr's other books, you'd probably like this one. It's been a while since I've (re) read it, but it is one that I have gone back to time and time again...

This book was informative, but boring. There are better books out there to read about breastfeeding that contain just as much information.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-06-17

This is an excellent resource. I'm not sure what the problem is with it being distributed free by pharmaceutical companies either; actually, I think it's great that people are getting this resource free. Far from discouraging breastfeeding, the pharmaceutical insdustry is helping doctors PROMOTE it. By offering the book free, pharmaceutical companies are hardly helping their own bottom line (they could simply give out free formula and not provide anything supportive of breastfeeding); quite the opposite, they are doing something that works against their bottom line. Pharmaceutical companies who sell formular even use the phrase "breast is best." The fact of the matter is, there is a place for formula since breastfeeding is not an option for everyone, and a place for companies that continually try to improve options available for such people. I guess with some people though industry simply can't win no matter what they do.

4 out of 5 stars Good Help is Here.......2007-02-21

I got this book free with that bag of formula the hospital gives away (YIKES!), but I found the book's information to be helpful to me. It was easier to read and understand than "The Womanly Art..." and it was far less preachy. BUT, Janet Tamaro's "So That's What They're For!" was even better than this one. Of the three, that is the one I'm recommend most.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE THIS AT YOUR BOPPY'S SIDE!.......2007-01-12

This is such an excellent resource! Life saver in many respects, reserve a spot near your boppy for this book!

            5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-01-10

I have read quite a few breastfeeding books and found this one to be paticularly informative. I definitely suggest it for expecting mothers who are new to breastfeeding.

"I started challenging myself six or seven years ago to prepare tasty cuisine that reflected my heritage and influence but to alter it so that people could eat it more than once a week and not have to worry about suffering from high blood pressure in every bite," Woods said.

In Home Plate Cooking, Woods shares recipes for delicacies such as:

                  5 out of 5 stars Mmmmmmmmm.......2007-04-06

Every recipe is wonderful! I've tried at least a dozen and they were all as good as the descriptions. Nice photos, easy-to-follow directions make this cookbook a winner. Since Turner South network went belly-up, I have missed Marvin Woods Home Plate Cooking show. This cookbook contains most of the recipes except for one that I am desparately hunting for ... French Coconut Pie. Other than that, I rate this one very high.

                  5 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes!.......2006-03-02

I thought the recipes in this cookbook was just delicious. I've tried most of them and I'm happy to recommend this book to all cooks and cook-wannabes.

As one that watches his TV show whenever the opportunity allows me, I had to have a copy of his book. And as one born and raised in the south, I fnd that his recipes, while not exactly as I knew them, do remain faithful to many of the meals I grew up with. I don't always follow them as written (I sneak in a few of my Mothers methods) nonetheless, you can't go arong with any of his.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Looking Book - Terrible Recipe.......2005-04-09

I checked this book out of my local library. It is a very nice looking book. I really liked the pictures and the layout of the book. On the side of some of the pages it has Droppin' Knowledge where Mr. Woods gives some cooking advice (like not substituting milk for cream). I tried the Red Wine with Mushrooms recipe. It was really bad!!! I followed the recipe exactly as it was a very easy recipe to prepare. We had to throw the whole thing out. I am not about to waste my time and money trying out another dish in Mr. Wood's book when that one turned out so horrible.

5 out of 5 stars The king of southern food does it again........2004-11-05

After virtually wearing out the pages of Marvin Woods' first book, I came across this one and immediately snatched it up. Once again, Mr. Woods brings fourth classically elegant dishes of the south with a more modern flair. These dishes are the sort that not only offer down home flavor to any meal, but will offer the romanticism of the old South. Any guest at your home will be thrilled to be treated to these regional specialties. You need not be a professional cook to be successful with these dishes, following the directions will yield wonderful results that will have you and your guests harkening back to the spanish moss mansions of the deep south. Buy this book, you wont be disappointed.

                      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Wildly colorful (and not extremely difficult once you get the hang of it), Deborah Gonet's machine embroidery designs do not require an elaborate computerized sewing machine, just a machine capable of freestyle sewing (meaning that the feed dog can be lowered or covered so you can sew in all directions). Then, with an embroidery hoop, an array of colorful threads, and some silk, velvet, or cotton, you can create stunning clothing, accessories, and home furnishings. The book's final section details all the basic techniques and includes complete clothing patterns (along with specifications for enlarging them on a photocopier). The bulk of the book presents step-by-step instructions for 23 projects, enabling the reasonably proficient sewer to transform circles, squiggles, zigzags, flowers, stars, and planet motifs into adornments for very attractive shirts, vests, hats, scarves, bags, buttons, quilts, pillows, and curtain tiebacks. The directions are fairly thorough but do require patience and practice. Still, the beautiful results should inspire novice stitchers to perfect their skills, while the more experienced will find this a rich sourcebook. --Amy Handy
