Phil finally finds someone, who disappears...........2002-05-14
Daisy agrees to help introduce Philip Petrie's new love to his family. She is rich and American and he doesn't know how they will react. Daisy decides to kill two birds with one stone and invites Alec Fletcher to meet her mother. The week before the eventful weekend, Gloria is kidnapped. The villians will kill her if her father calls the police, so Petrie asks Daisy to help him find her.
This was an incredibly quick read (under three hours). I just couldn't put it down. It was nice to see all of the usual characters in a different setting. The author lets us get to know them a little better. Lucy is in every book, but very little time is given to her for example. I am looking forward to the next one.
A weak link in an otherwise stellar series........2002-03-08
Set in 1923 England, this series follows the adventures of the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple, a young woman who has defied convention by choosing to make her own living (as a journalist) rather than let her aristocratic family support her.
When Phillip Petrieýs American fiancé is kidnapped and held for ransom, Phillip turns to his good friend Daisy for help. Daisyýs penchant for crime-solving insures her willingness to help her old friend, but she finds herself caught between a rock and a hard place when Phillip asks her not to involve the police. Daisyýs romance with Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard, a widower with a young daughter, certainly makes this dictate difficult to follow.
This is the fifth of the series (preceded by ýMurder on the Flying Scotsmaný and followed by ýDead in the Waterý), and although the characters and setting remain as charming as ever, there is not much mystery solving to be had. The perpetrator of the kidnapping is obvious very early on, but the plot revolves more around rescuing the fiancé than solving a crime. The story is best described as a ýcaper,ý with lots of following of suspects, traveling around the countryside, and a climactic shoot-out. Readers who like to decipher clues and try to solve the mystery themselves will be disappointed.
A well plotted who-done-it.......1997-10-14
In 1923 just outside London, Phillip Petrie, the son of an English Lord, stops his car on the side of the road to see what is causing a terrible knocking sound. Gloria Arbuckle, the daughter of an American industrial giant, stops to offer her assistance. The pair begins to see each other and Phillip quickly falls in love with Gloria. Phillip courts Gloria and her poppa as he plans to win them both over and marry her.
One day, while Phillip and Gloria were driving together, the car breaks down. Phillip tries to fix it, but they are set upon by some thugs. He is tied up and she is abducted. The kidnappers instruct poppa to raise a ransom without involving the police if he wants his beloved daughter back alive. Phillip turns to his childhood chum, Daisy Dalyrmple, to save the life of his beloved.
DAMSEL IN DISTRESS is a fun to read, who-done-it that ironically laughs at itself as well as high society. Daisy and the support cast (both the recurring and new characters) are all wonderful in a zany way, making this a series worth reading.

this Ain't like the Green Lion Trilogy.......2003-04-28
I must say that I was terribly disappointed by this incredibly disjointed, ill-told story. After Teleri and Ceilyn (from the Green Lion Trilogy), I thought Gwenlliant's story would be amazing. There is no wonder in this book. Just a lot of angst. Very, very disappointing.
Compelling and engrossing.......1999-10-15
To those who like some romance in their fantasy novels, Teresa Edgerton weaves tales that reach out to those of us who were not precocious by instinct. Anyone who has a natural sense of modesty will empathize with her heroines. Unfortunately, Edgerton's books are few and far between. I have not seen a new one for several years and have given up looking for them.
Bravi, bravi, bravissimi.......1998-01-22
Teresa Edgerton is one of those rare fantasy authors who can delve into an entire world and make it her own; who lends respect to the genre. Unfortunately, due to the quality of her work, she has largely passed unnoticed and is quickly out of print (which is why I had to steal two of her books out of the library. Don't worry, I did pay for them--eventually). She worldbuilds with ease, creates believable characters, and leaves the reader desiring more. Best of all, her books are re-readable. One grips the covers as if this time the heroine won't make it through. Don't miss any of her books--even if you have to beg, borrow, steal or cajole! For those who may have never read any of her series: two trilogies are set in Celydonn, one conceivably leading to the other (Green Lion Trilogy to this one beginning with the Castle of the Silver Wheel). The other is a duology set in 18th-19th century prose, quite humorous, but very different from the Celydonn trilogies in style. It is helpful if one is familiar with the literary history of that period. Unfortunately, she hurries the pace of the action through in the duology, and does not linger over character and world building as much as some hopeless romantics (myself included) might like. Final analysis: Ms. Edgerton, thank you. --Emily C. A. Snyder

a health bible.......2007-03-15
this book contains such a wealth of knowledge, i am very grateful for finding it. i just happened to pick it up at a friend's house one night and read a couple pages. then i ordered a copy for myself... i have ended up ordering about 6 or 7 copies since then, because i always end up letting someone borrow it and letting them either just keep it or give me the money for it!
anyways, this book is great, it covers breathing techniques, general diet information, sex, sleep, etc... basically anything we do, this book covers. so if you want a book that will give you many things to really go out and try for yourself, then this is the book for you. if you want just another book of vague theories then you might want to look elsewhere!
also the deal on this book is great. each section alone could be sold for the price of it! instead they're all compiled into one nice thick book.
seriously, i am so grateful for finding it, i hope you can get as much out of it as i have.
Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-01-18
I love this book.
Since I read it for the first time years ago, I continually find it an inspiration on how to improve my life in so many different ways.
Highly redommendable.
The Best Tool For Learning How To Eat (plus much more).......2007-01-10
A friend turned me on to "The Tao of Health..." and after some adjustments to my eating habits, I have never felt better. My energy level is more consistent (no fatigue), my immune system is stronger than ever, and for the first time in my life I have regular movements. Daniel P. Reid is not only a wealth of eastern knowledge but he has a way of making his ideas easily understood and without pretentiousness. I have given this book to countless people who have all had similar experiences to mine. I highly recomend buying "The Tao of Health..." if to just have it as a reference for living a better life.
All you need to kow about health basics.......2007-01-09
Great self-help book for anyone who is confused by conflicting information about food choices, food combining and how to go about changing your lifestyle for better health in general. Don't worry ... it's not all Eastern mysticism .... there are comparisons between Eastern and Western approaches, but all very clearly written and also includes easy to understand sections on basic exercise, breathing techniques and recipies that you can make on a budget. Highly recommend.
A must read. An outstanding book on health, sex and longevity.......2006-11-04
I bought this book after reading his other work, The Tao of Detox. I found that book to be an extremely well researched guide into the art of detox. Each page was literally stacked with useful information and sources for products that were recommended, and not fluff. I was quite taken aback by the depth and extensiveness of research that he'd conducted into the topic of detox.
This book is not dissimilar in that sense, Reid has conducted extensive research over a long period of time and knows this subject intimately. Literally each page is stacked with information. I work as a researcher (business, change management, leadership etc.) and I can very quickly tell if someone is putting forward a bunch of theories they've read and have not practiced or do not really understand. And with this book it's quite obvious to the reader that Reid has walks his talk and that even it's based on Taoism and other modern sources, innovations, tools and practices, he quite clearly has made this work the core of his life, so he knows what he's talking about from direct experience.
I've started using many of his health guidelines and I know from how my body feels that they work for me. I honestly believe that most of the guidelines put out by the modern health industry are either deliberately misleading so as to promote their (hidden) agenda and profits, well intentioned, yet misinformed (and perpetuate common myths - the 'balanced diet' idea of foods which are poorly combined) or poorly researched and not based on practices and principles that have stood the test of time in other cultures and systems. I feel that if I you only implemented 10% (I'm aiming for at least 80%) of what I've read in this book about health, you'd feel 100% better. And the best part is that his guidelines are not hard to implement or follow. Reid understands the challenges of the world we live in and gives practical advice that can relatively easily be implemented with a few modifications to our diet. There's extensive content on using foods to heal a wide range of ailments.
Is it all scientifically proven? No! Has much of it been successfully used in other cultures for hundreds of years? Absoluletly! He doesn't claim for it all to be 'the truth', his ideas, scientifically valided etc. Simply do as Reid says, try it, check it out for yourself and see how you feel. If it doesnt feel right or you don't feel better after giving it a shot, don't use it. For me, afer doing the Tao of Detox, the answer is I felt instantaneously 1000% more healthy (I'm not exaggerating, I consider the 10 day detox I did to have been one of the best things I've done in my entire life), and after implementing some of the food guidelines, I feel wonderful, less bloated, more energy, more alive... and I was already eating a vegetarian diet and reasonably well.
The other parts of the book are based on Taoism, and include an excellent gudie to breathing techniques, chi gung, sex and exercise. Much of which is illustrated and is also well explained and easy to follow.
I'd consider just a few of the recommendations in this book (and his others) would be worth the cover price alone for the impact they're having on my health, wellbeing and longevity, yet the book is literally LOADED with useful information. My book is basically highlighted on every page. The value I've received from this book compared to its miniscule price (consider even the cost of going to see any type of health practitioner once) makes the purchase decision quite simply a no-brainer. I'd not hesitate to recommend or purchase this book at again at several times its cover value. It's one of my most used books, and highly valued books on health and wellbeing.
While there's a little overlap in each of them, particularly this one and the Complete Book of Chinese Health & Healing, without hesitation I'd recommend purchasing the three (including Tao of Detox).
My highest recommendation.

Fun and Sexy.......2006-05-10
I devour cookbooks like some do novels, and this is one of the favorites. The author's conversational style and humor are addictive, and I have reread parts of the book many times. The recipes are solid, and I have served the pomegranate margaritas at several functions. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seduced by food as well as those who would like to seduce with food.
Booty book for Jacqui's photos..........2005-09-25
We bought Booty Food after reading the reviews raving about the book posted on Amazon.com and because we used to enjoy Jacqui Malouf's show Hot off the Grill with Bobby Flay on Food Network Channel. However, we are extremely disappointed with the contents of Booty Food. The book is full of photos of Jacqui Malouf specifically choreographed for this book and the recipes are nothing to write home about. We had such high hopes for this book, but they all faded away after trying few recipes in the book. If you really want a cookbook for special occasions to give your girlfriend or wife, buy instead Intercourses: An Aphrodisiac Cookbook by Martha Hopkins and Randall Lockridge. But if you find Ms. Malouf attractive and want a book of her photos with her significant other then buy this book. I guess our standards for good food are much higher than other reviewers'.
WE LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2005-04-10
My boyfriend and I bought this book on a whim a few nights ago, and we can't stop looking at it. I loved Jacqui Malouf on Hot Off the Grill, which is why I picked it up. I'm a HUGE foodie and like nothing more than good "food porn," as in gorgeous photographs of food. This book has wonderful photography that looks like you could just pick the food right up off of the page and dig in. The pictures of her are real and not too airbrushed. I love how she talks about her own relationship with her husband. The writing is funny and smart and incisive. I definitely think there is a link between people's ordering and eating behavior and their behavior in love, and she goes into that a lot. The selection of recipes for many occasions in a relationship is perfect. This book is a celebration of food and love, and I can't wait to try out some of the recipes. They are wonderful to read, and I think making them (then eating them) with my boyfriend will be a joy as well.
Booty-ful food.......2004-03-19
I have never bought a book like this before, but I've seen Jacqui on "Hot Off the Grill" and thought I would check it out. Wow, does she know how to get the juices flowing! Her recipes are great. I have tried a few and though some are complicated and require some hard to find ingredients where I live, the taste was delicious! Way to go Jacqui! When is the next book coming HOT off the presses?
I love this cook book!!!.......2004-03-02
It's funny, it's sassy and the recipes are to die for!!! The bacon-wrapped scallops, the mango-brie quesadillas, the chocolate pudding....forget about it! And Jacqui Malouf is so funny and real that it's like cooking with a best friend. She takes the pressure to be perfect off with her hilarious commentary and her get-real approach. And, she provides all kinds of shortcuts so that you can get back to the bedroom as quickly as possible. This book would be a great gift for seasoned cooks or people who are new in the kitchen, not to mention a great wedding shower gift!

Greyhound history must have..........2005-09-17
This is an excellent book for those who want an in depth look at the history of the greyhound. It doesn't have info. on how to care, treat, or train, but it provides more background than I've found in any other book. The author uses personal references which make it more meaningful. Really, an enjoyable read from a greyhound foster parent, active rescuer, and a 4 time adopter.
A wonderful history of a beautiful breed.......2004-02-11
Being both a sighthound owner and a history buff, I was so delighted to have found this book. I can't recommend it enough.
I can guarantee that if you haven't had experience with sighthounds, you will want to after reading this! For those of us who know the breed, it is a long overdue salute to one of the most overlooked and unappreciated dog breeds in the world.
I especially liked the photos that accompanied the text. It was wonderful to see so many representations of greyhounds through the ages.
I thought that chapter 1, on the Greyhound family, was very informative, and the author managed to put a lot of information that is rarely found all in one place into a very readable and enjoyable format.
Read this book- You'll love it, even if you don't own a Greyhound! I hope that Cynthia Branigan's book helps many many more retired racing Greyhounds find homes with people who learn about them from her book as well.
greyhounds' popularity is ancient history!.......1998-08-07
I thought I knew all there was to know about my Greyhound until I read this book. In it I learned that my dog's ancestors have been delighting humans for literally thousands of years. The book takes you on a tour of the history of civilization with Greyhounds in the leading role. If only history had been so interesting when I was in school! The artwork is breathtaking, the adoption anecdotes are both hilarious and touching and Cynthia Branigan is obviously both a scholar and a person with a big heart. If you own a Greyhound you owe it to your dog to learn more about his contribution to history.
An enjoyable and interesting book........1998-01-09
I was not really interested in the history of greyhounds, but have been contemplating adopting one. I received this book as a gift, and enjoyed it much more than I expected. She makes it interesting with some amazing stories, with some astronomical numbers in some cases. The most interesting part is her own experiences with these dogs. A good read.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2003-08-24
The general tips on the business are good, but this book was written during a very different time in the antiques business. A lot of the what is discussed is out of date and does not apply to today's market. The manner in which the information is presented is annoying because the book is written by Sara Pitzer, but the knowledge of the business comes from Don Cline. Pitzer ends up saying "Don says this..." and "Don tried that..." and so on. Very annoying.
Older title but still valuable and fun.......2002-10-22
This book is excellently written with many enlightening stories to illustrate the authors' points about buying, selling, negotiating and more.
As someone who is toying with the idea of opening a booth in an antiques mall, I appreciated reading about the other selling options available such as holding antiques yard sales, picking for other dealers, or attending flea sales.
Although this book is not very long, it is the most helpful title I've found and is well worth its price. The authors concentrate on what the reader really needs to know: how to get started without getting in over one's head, how to buy and where (with the inside scoop on auctions and estate sales - fascinating!), how to sell most items at a profit and get rid of the mistakes, dealer discounts and possible sidelines to earn extra income.
An informative, must-have for aspiring dealers........1998-07-28
Sara Pitzer and Don Cline map out an easy-to-follow trail of tips, etiquette, and guidelines for beginning antique enthusiasts. Even those not planning to become antique dealers will benefit from the sound advice in this book.
The chapter on auctions was an eye-opening book in itself. I only wish I had read this book before I found myself at my first auction, the dreaded estate auction. As I read this book, I cringed at the novice mistakes and blunders I made at that first auction. Ms. Pitzer and Mr. Cline are kind enough to let the reader in on some of the blunders and mistakes Don and other experts have made in the past. They point out how you can learn from their mistakes.
Thank you Sara and Don, you have taught me I can inch my way into the business. Your advice is sound, and the mistakes were reassuring. With your book, I now feel ready to face the auctions again!

This is the book orchid fans have been waiting for.
Customer Reviews:
very practical information.......2007-09-19
This book has alot of practical information and has much more detailed culture information about many different orchid families, also has information about small orchid families that I have not found in any other book about orchids. This book also gives step by step instructions on how to repot or divide several different types of orchids including paphiopediliums and Phrags.
Great book, lots of good ideas and beautiful pictures...........2007-02-10
I am an amateur orchid grower and have read a variety of books on the subject. So far, this is the best book I encountered and the most comprehensive. Not only that, it is a work of art, printed on high quality of paper. The pictures are outstanding and so is the carefully written text. This book is also just loaded with inexpensive ideas on various small projects that you can do to improve your results. If you are going to get one book on orchids, this should be it!
The best.......2007-02-06
I believe that this is the best book out there on orchids. Mr Cullina covers the important and often allusive culture issues confronted in growing orchids in real depth. He provides thoughtful, comon sense explanations for his reccomendations that go way beyond those found in other books I have read on the subject. The second half of the book details the cultural requirements and rates the difficulty level of 100 species of potential interest to growers with experience levels from beginner to expert. Much more than a coffee table book, Understanding Orchids is a valuable reference that belongs in every orchid enthuiast's library.
Friendly and useful.......2006-11-20
As a relatively new orchid grower, I found this to be one of the most useful books for a beginner. In addition, it is written is a very accessible, friendly style, with many examples of the author's struggles to succeed with orchids. I highly recommend it!
A great book for beginners.......2006-11-05
I bought this book as I was starting into the hobby of Orchids. The book is extremely informative on the basics and attempts to discuss common problems people have with Orchids. The most interesting sections are those on potting mediums and the individual orchid varieties commonly found at florists or even the grocery store.
biggest problem with the book is that it seems to convey the idea that any of the solutions will work which is not the case. Successful orchid growing requires an understanding through trial and error of what will work in your home. There are some basic tenants for everyone; however, they get lost in the details.
All in all, it's a great reference book and I would strongly recommend it.

Book Description
Birmingham's Sixteenth Street Baptist Church had a preeminent role in the story of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama, in part because of the bombing there that took the lives of four young girls. However, other African American churches in Birmingham played a much larger role in the Civil Rights Movement. In particular, the Bethel Baptist Church, pastored from 1953 to 1961 by Fred Shuttlesworth, was the mother church of agitation against segregation in the city known as "Bombingham."
In 1998 the Birmingham Historical Society sponsored the Birmingham Revolutionaries Symposium to present a case for the national significance of Fred Shuttlesworth, his Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, and the sixty African American churches in which they met. Bringing together both historical and sociological analysis by scholars and personal reflections of participants, this volume includes six essays from the Symposium and makes a compelling case for recognizing Bethel Baptist Church, in addition to the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, as a National Historic Landmark and for placing the other fifty-nine civil rights churches on the National Register of Historic Places.
These essays call attention to some of the Civil Rights Movement's most unsung heroes. Anyone interested in the history of race relations or in the Civil Rights Movement will find these essays rewarding reading.
Customer Reviews:
Book rubbed me the wrong way on Rev. Shuttlesworth.......2004-09-03
I purchased and read this book for a Civil Rights class that I took which focused on the Civil Rights movement in Alabama. Fortunately I was exposed to the movement's highlights in many forms of literature and multimedia, thus not seeing only one view of events. This particular book was my first introduction to the Rev. Shuttlesworth, and I was vastly disappointed in the way the book portrayed the Reverend. I think the authors over compensate for the lack of attention given to Shuttlesworth in mainstream Civil Rights pieces, trying too hard to compare his actions with other leaders. I was put off by the descriptions, which seemed to try to discredit the other leaders.
Thankfully, later in the class I was reintroduced to Shuttlesworth and I took away a much more positive view of him and his contributions to the movement.
I would recommend reading Parting the Waters and Pillar of Fire by Taylor Branch instead of this particular selection.
