Book Description

Wounded and estranged from his partner and love interest, Anna Turnipseed, Emmett Parker has come home after 13 years of federal law enforcement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. 4 out of 5 stars Another hit for Mitchell.......2007-07-09

Emmett Parker is a Comanche BIA investigator who normally works out of the Arizona office. But as a Special and unique investigator, Emmett is called upon to solve all kinds of crimes.

However, his last adventure cause him physical harm so he has come home to Okalahoma to recuperate and heal, and possibly decide if he still wants to be in this line of work.

Before we can even determine if Emmett is settling into his mother's home for some much needed R&R, he is accused of killing his best friend, being involved in an elaborate scheme to skim money from the trust funds of the Native Americans, and is being hunted by an adversary who has known him all his life. Michael Mangas is an FBI agent out to get Emmett, maybe, just because. He is not sure Emmett is guilty, but it sure is looking that way. Only with cunning and ingenuity and a little help from his friends can Emmett avoid getting killed or captured.

This is a fast-pace book with lots of action and twists. We are not sure who are the bad guys, and who are the good guys. All we know for certain is that Emmett is not guilty and someone else is. Proving it is another kettle of fish altogether.

When an investigator is on the wrong side of the law, he has to be very careful and suspect everyone, including the ones who claim to be helping him.

The ending is true Mitchell, lots of action and fireworks to conclude the storyline, but also, enough hints to leave us waiting for the next installment of Emmett Parker and his exciting life.

5 out of 5 stars Dance of the Thunder Dogs.......2007-05-12

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. Events unfolded at a good pace and there was not alot of the emotional torture that Parker went through with Tumbleweed in previous books. That can get a little tiresome.

5 out of 5 stars Mitchell's best yet.......2007-03-27

Emmet home to recover or retire? Think again.
While it is hard to grasp that immediate suspicion should fall on such a respected law enforcement officer, the intrigues make this a page turner like no other. Parker on his own, on home turf that has become unfamiliar to him through his long absence, adds great cultural background, works very well, and makes this probably Mitchell's best book so far.
However it would be nice to see Anna back in the future somehow...

5 out of 5 stars Mitchell does it again.......2006-05-16

If you're a fan of Indian Country whodunits, Kirk Mitchell is tops. I could go on, but I'd just be repeating myself. This is a terrific read.

4 out of 5 stars Sorely disappointed.......2006-03-22

The human side of the book, which was most germane to all of the preceding books, was mostly lacking in this story. The tale was told exclusively from an indian viewpoint except from the nuiance of Comanche sexuality. His previously books weave several layers of the indian viewpoint regarding sex, and this book ignores it except in a superficial way.

It also was somewhat difficult to see Parker go from being a presidential decorated "hero" to a fugitive to be "shot on sight" in only a few pages. It seems that there were a few too many miracle escapes.

The ending was not the most believable and seemed to end the story a little too rapidly.

I'm looking forward to the next one, hopefully with the return of Turnipseed.

      5 out of 5 stars Good! ;).......2007-05-31

The first part, the SILENT STRIDERS, was a dream for me because Mephi is one of my fav characters of WEREWOLF, and I really enjoyed learning things about him. And also the relation she has with another member of the pack is really enjoyable to read.

And I really like that his sense of duty and his identity is what keeps him going at the end, when seems that all he cared about is lost.

The BLACK FURIES was also a great read too, because I get to know this tribe better, discarding my idea of them as just simple feminists. They have more common sense that I thought.

      4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2001-10-29

I loved the first story with the Silent Sriders. Great writeing, I didn't want to put it down.

I also like the Black Furies but I felt it lacked something. Great ending but the meat of the storie could have been better. I do recommend this book to any WW fan out their.

      5 out of 5 stars Yeah!.......2001-09-10

Finally some good reading towards WtA. I loved how each novella zeros in on that tribe and yet keeps the big picture in view. Kinda bummed about some of the storylines. But at the end of the black furies novel, I am sitting at the edge of my seat wondering what's going to happen. If the other books at half as good as this one was, I will definitely love them.

5 out of 5 stars Bipolar for Dummies.......2007-08-18

This is the best book I have read on bipolar.

I have always had doubts about my diagnosis of being bipolar, but after reading this book I feel much better about the effects the disease has had on me. Not only did the book confirm my suspicions about my disease, but it gave me ways to counteract some of the feelings I have/had.

I have suggested that my wife read the book (when I am finished) as it is equally directed to your support team as it is to the patient.

      5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-07-30

This gave insight into the bipolar thinkng and help for me to understand it better and deal with it in others.

I read some of it but it really didn't give the info I wanted or needed.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2007-06-09

This is, by far, the best book on understanding Bipolar Disorder--that is, if you can get past the "dummies" label. It is a "must read" for people who have been diagnosed and for anyone who knows or loves someone with the disorder. It helps identify stressors and triggers, teaches how to take control of your treatment, how to select a mental health specialist, how to maintain mood stability, how to make positive lifestyle changes and gives you medication and other treatment options. All of this and with a dash of humor! I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Great overall view of bipolar disorder.......2007-03-11

This book contains the basics of it all. Nothing to indept mostly if your in a real crisis. But it does give you a little understanding of ssi which a lot of books look over. I would definitfly recommend this book to another.

5 out of 5 stars Will Wonders Never Cease? Maybe..........2006-11-17

I was actually asked by Amazon to review my own book -- I suspect because I bought a couple of copies that I needed quickly -- and for less than my publisher discount at that. Since I do not deem it fare to do so (under my own name anyway), I will simply say that while it is not the best book I have ever written, it is at least the best book I have ever written that has been published so far. And it is a heck of a lot shorter than the new Pynchon tome. Keep New Orleans alive!

5 out of 5 stars Time to Restock the Bar.......2006-01-04

As someone whose home bar currently comprises nothing more than gin, vodka, and a pathetic collection of triple sec, Rose's Lime Juice and Virgin Islands rum (a gift from vacationing parents), I skipped the recipes at first and went straight to the section of the book called ''Behind Bars: An Insider's Look at Ordering Out.'' Here was a list of useful tips for bar- and restaurantgoers. Among them:
      * Since most mixed drinks contain 3 ounces of liquid and most shots contain just 1 ounce, it's more cost effective to order one ''bone-dry'' (i.e., no vermouth) Stoli or Jagermeister martini than it is to order three shots of Stoli or Jagermeister.
      * Just as asking for ''a glass of wine'' will probably yield plonk, it's inadvisable to simply order ''a martini,'' say, or ''a gin and tonic''; doing so pretty much guarantees your drink will be made with generic spirits. If you care about how your cocktail tastes, order it by brand name: ''an Absolut martini,'' ''a Tanqueray and tonic.'' Know what you want and don't be afraid to ask for it.
      * Speaking of Absolut Martinis, they may be my father's drink of choice, but they're an aberration to traditionalists. If you must have the classic gin cocktail, speak up about it already! Otherwise, resign yourself to the reality that you're just as likely to get a vodka-based version these days. Ditto for numerous other drinks. So specify, specify, specify.

The recipes are peerless - clear and concise - and there is a witty but equally historical intro to each. It also seems to be the only serious cocktail book out there that has food pairings with every recipe. I think my home bar can stand some updating, and this book is a great start.

I've now bought two copies for myself (one to use, one autographed to be shown off!) and five for friends and relatives. The content is extensive (if you can't find it here, you probably shouldn't be drinking it!), the style is both witty and clear enough for the rankest amateur. Following is one recipe and description: see for yourself! (The following is ©2004, Rob Chirico, used by permission)

      General Description:
Every so often a simple relaxing drink comes along with an equally carefree name. The Zombie is not one. The name conjures up such bygone film stars as Karloff and Lugosi with good reason. The nine-odd ingredients in a Zombie make for a lethal brew that is more the product of a mad scientist than a bartender.

The first Zombie was created by Ernest Raymond Beaumont-Gant (who for some obscure reason was called "Don the Beachcomber") in the 1930s as a hangover cure for a patron at Don's Los Angeles bar. The fellow returned to the bar a few weeks later, and Don asked him how he liked the drink. The customer replied, "I felt like the living dead." The Zombie went on to become the signature drink at the Hurricane Bar at the 1939 World's Fair in New York, and Trader Vic featured it on his menu. It has since become a standard drink at Chinese restaurants, where it continues to transform jovial patrons into the moribund characters of a George Romero flick. The addition of 151-proof rum likens the Zombie to a postmortem in a glass.

Purchase: Anywhere you spy a tiki statue, a paper drink parasol, or sticks of bamboo, you will find a Zombie lurking. Beware the dreaded premixed Zombie.

You may want to think twice before you order one of the world's most lethal cocktails, because you may not be able to think at all afterward. If you do decide to seek out one of these weapons of mass destruction, Polynesian lounges like Trader Vic's and other high-end resort hotels mix their Zombies fresh. Otherwise Zombies are usually prefab concoctions. Not counting the option of never, the time to order a Zombie is with appetizers before dinner.

The first Zombies were probably shaken, but the drink is more commonly mixed in a blender today. The daunting array of ingredients may persuade you to forgo fresh fruit juices, but if you are going to hell in a handbasket, the handle should be well made.

Areas and Time of Occurrence: You may want to think twice before you order one of the world's most lethal cocktails, because you may not be able to think at all afterward. If you do decide to seek out one of these weapons of mass destruction, Polynesian lounges like Trader Vic's and other high-end resort hotels mix their Zombies fresh. Otherwise, Zombies are usually prefab concoctions. Not counting the option of never, the time to order a Zombie is with appetizers before dinner.

Season: The Zombie may strike you as a summertime drink, but it will strike you whatever the season.

Preparation: The first Zombies were probably shaken, but the drink is more commonly mixed in a blender today. The daunting array of ingredients may persuade you to forgo fresh fruit juices, but if you are going to hell in a handbasket, the handle should be well made.

Affinities: Since the Zombie is the equivalent of a liquid pupu platter, indulge yourself and order that tiny hibachi surrounded by barbecued beef sticks, crab Rangoon, chicken, prawns, and crisp wontons.

      Recipe for the Zombie:

      ¾ ounce fresh lime juice
      1 ounce unsweetened pineapple juice
      1 ounce fresh orange juice
      1 ounce light rum
      1 ounce dark rum
      ½ ounce apricot brandy
      1 ounce passion fruit syrup
      1 teaspoon superfine sugar
      ½ ounce 151-proof rum
Maraschino cherry, slice of orange, slice of pineapple, and a sprig of mint

Shaker method: Shake the three juices, light and dark rum, brandy, passion fruit syrup, and sugar with ice; then strain over ice into a chilled hurricane or other large glass. Float the 151-proof rum on top; then garnish with a maraschino cherry, an orange slice, a pineapple slice, and a mint sprig.

Blender method: Blend the three juices, light and dark rum, brandy, passion fruit syrup, and sugar with ½ cup crushed ice. Pour into a hurricane glass, and float the 151-proof rum on top; then garnish with a maraschino cherry, an orange slice, a pineapple slice, and a mint sprig.

Wow ! They said its the only "mixology" I'll ever need and they're right! OUTSTANDING ! Unlike most of these guides, it reads almost like a novel. Packed with interesting discussions of the myths surrounding famous drinks with just enough dry humor to put one in the mood for testing a new concoction. This book would have been standard equipment in the glovebox of every Earl's Shooting Brake!

For novice and professional alike, this is the barkeeps Rosetta Stone !

4 out of 5 stars A sort of diet Bad Girl Guide that manages to hold its own.......2003-08-19

Targeted at the twenty- and thirty-somethings who swear by the Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road, Nicole Beland's "The Cocktail Jungle: A Girl's Field Guide to Shaking and Stirring" is, undoubtedly, a knock-off of Cameron Tuttle's enormously popular Bad Girl series.

That's not to say the Cocktail Jungle can't hold its own--far from it. Excepting the sub-Cosmo fashion tips, Nicole Beland's advice and suggestions are dead-on. From her collected Helpful Hints on how to succeed at live band punk rock karaoke (I can verify that her tips are absolutely correct) to her DIY cocktail recipes, this handy light-reading skip-around guide covers everything just-enough. Know what you're ordering, and who's checking you out, no matter what bar you're in, from tiki to dive.

There are, however, rough patches. The informational snippets are oddly thrown around the book--the book is loosely structured, to say the least--and between the hot pink spot color, Nicole Beland's writing style (she was a senior editor at Cosmo, you know), and Amy Saidens' illustrations, you may at times wish you'd just purchased a magazine in the check-out aisle. Still, Beland's done her research. More often than not, you'll run across a sentence that makes you go, "Really?" and sometimes even "Yes! Yes! Exactly!"

2 out of 5 stars A little slim, not enough pictures.......2001-08-17

For the money, I was expecting a little bit more. Then again, paltry little fluff paperbacks are going for 8 bucks a pop these days, so I shouldn't have been too surprised to find this petite volume going for $20+.

It seems very well-researched, with lots of history for each breed. The section on Icelandic horses is particularly entertaining. The cover proclaims "Five-Gaited American Saddlebred, Tennesee Walking Horse, Missouri Fox Trotter, Peruvian Paso, Icelandic Horse, Paso Fino, and _More_". The "And more" is a dissapointing 7 pages covering 10 other breeds rather perfunctorily. Rather disappointing to me, a reader looking for more info on Tiger Horses (3 paragraphs) and the Rocky Mountain Horse (a rather substantial 5 paragraphs/about a page and a half). And while I know there are entire books about the lovely Lipizzan, I would have liked a mention in this one, as well.

For those of us who enjoy looking at pretty horses, this book is a disappointment. The photos are mostly small and all in black and white. Instead of a diagram of the various gaits, I would have probably been more educated by stop-motion photographs of the horse in motion, to watch their feet, with perhaps a diagram or description of the gait underneath the photo.

The writing is good, the research is fine, the description of gaits seems very comprehensive, but...there just wasn't enough!

5 out of 5 stars This book needs to be in your horse info library!.......1999-02-12

If you have any interest in gaited horses in particular, or horses in general, this book should be on your shelf. It gives wonderful descriptions and illustrations of the different gaits and in-depth history of many gaited breeds. The writing style is very readable and is actually hard to put down. The appendix of breed associations and bibliography listing books, magazines and tapes is extremely helpful. Bravo to Ms. Imus!

          5 out of 5 stars excellent.......1998-10-17

As a new owner of a Tennesse Walker- I found this book to be very informative. There is not much written on gaited horses. I enjoyed the parts on genetics and the explaination of the different gaits and the breed profiles. I belive this book would interest anyone with a gaited horse and if you dont have a gaited horse it would make you want to get one!!

3 out of 5 stars Good but Not Complete.......2004-11-06

This book has short (3 to 5 page) reviews of 30 or so rifles. Many of the more popular rifles are reviewed (Browning A-bolt, and Marlin 336). Many of the more popular ones are not. The Remington 700 is missing. However the information provided is of good quality. The author has fired all of the rifles reviewed, notices their accuracy, quality of workmanship, and price level. The book is good for what it does. If you are thiking of buying a rifle, this book can be helpful, however with so many popular rifles not covered you should make certain that the guns that interest you are covered before buying this book.

Beginning with coverage of the basics--fabric types and characteristics, welting and trims, tools, cutting and sewing directions--this book offers solid information on using upholstery to transform the look of a room. From the simplest additions (pillows and loose coverings) to the more complex pieces (tailored slipcovers and reupholstery), the projects are well explained and appealing, and include interesting variations such as incorporating decorative buttons and ties or upholstering a table. In addition to detail photos of work in progress, several full-room photos offer ideas for coordinating the total look of a room.

5 out of 5 stars Simple to the Complicted and easy to read and actually do.......2001-05-09

Some people get books like this because they want to see how things are done but rarely do they actually do a project. I on the otherhand am a doer and not just a looker. This book makes doing it easier.

Just over 140 pages long this is a book that really gave me the step by step info on how to both make slipcovers which are a European maindstay as well as how to redo upholdtery of chairs and sofas.

The authors covers everything from what type of fabric to use to preparing it ahead of time re: washing and sizing. On pages 56-66 she gives a step by step with photos instructions on how to do a slipcover for a couch that is of sound construction.

Pages 67 thru 71 a club chair is redone. But it is the tailored slipcovers starting on page 73 which I can do and do well. The Quick Tied cover for a chair on 87 is just perfect for those of us who live the casual California lifestyle or for someone in a small cottage on Marthas Vineyard.

The book covers Materials; Tools and Equipment; Cushions and Pillows; Simple Coverups; Making a Tailored Slipcover; Tailored Slipcover Projects; Quick Upholstery; Reuposletring a Chair; Upoholstery Projects. The issues of padding and stuffing, webbing, tying spring cord, threads, zippers, tacks, welt, sewing and sizing are all covered.

See if your library has the book. Then take your time, and plan well and measure twice and cut once and pin and baste and you will discover that you not only can redo your own furniture but have fun and probably save money as well.

              3 out of 5 stars Not a beginners book.......2000-02-24

Unless you have a good working experience of pattern-making, this book probably isn't where you want to begin. The author has assumed a level of expertise that is beyond a very beginner. The ideas are inspiring and it does have some fun ideas, especially in re-building the shape of furniture. But if you need to start from Square-1 then keep looking for a book that will teach you more of the basics. If, however, you are an accomplished seamstress, it won't be difficult for you to have a lot of fun with this book. You can fill in the blanks with some upholstery Q&A websites on-line.

3 out of 5 stars ok -- there are better books.......1998-08-07

I found this book to be a good source of inspiration for slipcovers, but the directions/instructions were not as good as other books.

4 out of 5 stars useful and well-illustrated.......1998-06-29

It's quite a practical book. As a professional make of loose covers I am always looking for new techniques, well illustrated. I didn't agree with all the methods, but on the whole, a useful book.

                Book Description

Margaret Vizinau was born blind in rural Arkansas in 1927. She was a woman of great faith who dedicated her God given gift of singing to the Lord.

Her family migrated to the San Francisco bay area in the late forties and in 1950 she entered into an inter-racial marriage with a non-believer. This union resulted in the birth of two sons. After six years the marriage ended in divorce, forcing her to raise her two sons on her own.

Margaret supported her family by playing the piano and singing for churches in the city of San Francisco. But she faced many challenges. She had four strikes against her. She was a woman in a man's world. She was a Negro woman. She was a single parent. And she was born blind.

San Francisco in the 50's and 60's was a place of great change and influence, and her sons would be affected by the challenges of the times. These challenges included the civil rights struggle, black awareness, sexuality, drugs and violence. The streets were constantly calling.

Shine On Me is a compelling drama full of suspense, spirituality, humor, betrayal, religion and sin. It is recommended as adult reading and contains strong language. Read and enjoy as you take a journey into the life of Margaret Vizinau.
