Good Mystery.......1999-11-23
I really appreciate forensic mysteries and Aaron Elkins has developed Gideon Oliver in a believable manner. I will admit that the forensic part of this mystery is pretty minimal, so if that is what you're after you might want to start with Gideon Oliver in ICY CLUTCHES. All in all, Dead Men's Hearts is an enjoyable, light mystery.

Is it really possible that eating more fat is the key to better health? It depends on the fat, according to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos. The Omega Plan shows, in great detail, the difference between omega-3 fats, those found in fish and some green vegetables, and omega-6 fats, which are found in most meats and vegetable oils. The former have heart-protective and cancer-preventive properties; the latter, she writes, cause obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression, and a host of other ills. Omega-3 fats are at the heart of her plan, along with ample servings of fruits and vegetables. Unlike diets based on deprivation, Simopoulos offers some fairly lush food choices, including an ounce of cheese every day. Best of all, The Omega Plan is bursting with so much useful information about food shopping and preparation that you'll be able to use its advice the second you put the book down.
Book Description
The medically proven diet that restores your body's essential nutritional balance
"Good fats"--essential fatty acids--influence every aspect of our being, from the beating of our hearts to our ability to learn to remember. There are two types of essential fatty acids (EFAs), omega-6 and omega-3. The problem with our modern diet is that it contains far more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3s. This hidden imbalance makes us more vulnerable to heart disease, cancer, obesity, autoimmmune diseases, allergies, diabetes, and depression.
The Omega Diet is a natural, time-tested diet that balances the essential fatty acids in your diet. It is packed with delicious food that contain the "good" fats, including real salad dressing, cheese, eggs, fish--even the occasional chocolate dessert--and an abundance of antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables, and legumes.
The Omega Diet provides:
- seven simple dietary guidelines for optimal physical and mental health
- a concise guide to the foods you need to restore your body's nutritional balance
- a diet plan that lets you eat fat as you lose fat
- fifty delicious recipes that are quick and easy to prepare
- a comprehensive three-week menu to help you get started

Nothing special.......2007-09-29
Nothing contained in the book that hasn't already been printed about food and etc. They advocate Canola Oil over Olive and that is the first I ever read that. Other than that I wouldn't recommend to purchase it.
I have Lupus and was looking for a cleaner, something different daily eat book.
Really?.......2007-06-01
I was surprised that this book was copyrighted in 1998. It seems that we have just now caught up with what she knew back then about essential fatty acids. That part of the book is very good and I am glad that we have finally caught up with her on this.
I haven't tried any of her recipes but I it seems that many of the recipes do not follow her traditional Greek way of cooking. I mean canola oil, for instance, certainly is not a part of traditional cooking anywhere. It is a relatively modern phenomena. She also uses white sugar and white flour in some of her recipes. Come on! These things were not part of the traditional Greek diet. And, really, do you think they used low-fat dairy products. Give us a break!
Lifesaving Stuff!.......2006-11-03
Great recipes, great information. Two RN's and my cardiologist all give this book a really big thumbs up! Plus, and this is a seriously big plus, you never feel like you're dieting.
The best diet book !!!.......2006-08-27
This book is a classic, and will be for a long time !!! The best way to eat healthy, and stay strong. Many of her predictions have already come true - i.e omega -3 eggs, canola oil in many foods. Has worked to maintain my weight for several years, and great cholesterol levels.
A valuable reference.......2006-07-12
"The Omega Diet" clearly explains just what exactly constitutes a truly healthful diet. In easily understandable language, Dr. Simopoulos outlines a simple, medically sound plan based on seven guidelines that can restore your body's nutritional balance and help it to function as nature intended. She emphasizes the importance of eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants and warns against consuming excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, saturated fats, and refined carbohydates, all of which can contribute to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and a host of other maladies that afflict many millions of Americans. You really owe it to yourself to read this book.
Also recommended: "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen," by Sonia Uvezian. The wide range of flavor-packed, easy-to-follow recipes in Uvezian's book prove that delicious food and healthful food can indeed be one and the same.
Book Description
Turkish food is one of the world's great cuisines. Its taste and depth place it with French and Chinese; its simplicity and healthfulness rank it number one. Turkish-born Ayla Algar offers 175 recipes for this vibrant and tasty food, presented against the rich and fascinating backdrop of Turkish history and culture. Tempting recipes for kebabs, pilafs, meze (appetizers), dolmas (those delicious stuffed vegetables or vine leaves), soups, fish, manti and other pasta dishes, lamb, poultry, yogurt, bread, and traditional sweets such as baklava are introduced here to American cooks in accessible form. With its emphasis on grains, vegetables, fruits, olive oil, and other healthful foods, Turkish cooking puts a new spin on familiar ingredients and offers culinary adventure coupled with satisfying and delicious meals.

Turkish Cooking.......2007-01-18
This is certainly one of the best cookbooks on Turkish Cuisine. In addition to the wonderful recipes, the book details the history and background of Turkish dishes. The recipes are simple, yet elegant. While I certainly haven't examined the entire gamut of available cookbooks, this certainly was the best I have run across.
Classic Kitchen Cooking.......2006-06-30
Enjoying book but would prefer if there were pictures that you could see what the dish looked like
Great Cookbook!.......2005-08-02
My wife and I love it! Not only does it have great recipes but it has stories about where the recipe comes from. This is actually our second purchase of the book because we gave one to our friend who loved this book.
accurate and interesting.......2005-02-20
This book is quite accurate and most recipes are designed for those who don't know the ingredients and techniques well. But because of two reasons I don't use this Turkish cookbook often (I have another favorite): First is the lay out. Recipes are not very easy to follow while cooking and you don't know what the outcome would look like (or supposed to look like) since there are no pictures. Second is the lack of detailed explanations. It is definitely not for dummies.
Excellent Historical and Culinary Treatment. Must Buy!.......2005-02-15
`Classical Turkish Cooking' by Ayla Algar is a great exemplar of what a cookbook describing an important national cuisine should be, if there are few or no other books on the subject in English. At the outset, it is important to point out that the author makes an excellent case for the historical fact that Turkish cuisine, based on a long history of cuisine from the Ottoman empire, which inherited much from the equally important Persian / Iranian cuisine, is a truly interesting food culture, distinctive in enough different ways from the general Eastern Mediterranean milieu to make it worthy of study and emulation.
The Turkish / Ottoman cuisine is in every way a confirmation of the thesis stated most firmly by Paula Wolfert in `Cous Cous and Other Good Food from Morocco' that one of the four requirements for the creation of an important, interesting cuisine is the presence of a sizable nobility and wealthy court in which chefs are well paid to create interesting dishes for the court and for entertaining diplomats to the court. Conspicuous consumption was not invented in the United States. Ms. Algar does us a great service by presenting a very nice thumbnail sketch of the history of the Turkish people who migrated to Asia Minor from central Asia and, on the way, picked up lots of culinary influences from the Iranians in the centuries following the rise of Islam throughout central Asia and the Middle East. Happily, unlike several other historical sketches I have seen recently in books on purportedly important cuisines, Ms. Algar ties her story in with actual culinary information, including linguistic and historical evidence for the origins of many different culinary trends in Turkey. I will not pretend to recount all of this. It is important, however, for your appreciation of this book to realize that this cuisine, and the material in this book reflects food influenced by the full range of the Ottoman empire which, at its peak, stretched from the gates of Vienna to the bottom of the Basra on the Persian Gulf to the outskirts of Fez in Morocco.
The book is subtitled `Traditional Turkish Food for the American Kitchen', however, I do not see a lot of effort devoted to making the recipes friendly to amateur American cooks. In many ways, this may be a good thing in that the author does not loose the `traditional Turkish' of the recipes in deference to what may be easy for the average American household. If it did, it would be much less valuable in our collection of books about traditional cuisines.
Turkish cuisine shares much with the other cuisines of the Eastern Mediterranean. There is an especially strong family resemblance between Greek and Turkish recipes, and it is in no way clear in which direction the influence was strongest. While the Greek cuisine is older, it was also heavily influenced by Persian and Phoenician sources, so it is easy to believe that the central role of lamb, yoghurt, sesame, citrus, flatbreads, and very thin pastries all came from some common central Asian source. What is surprising is that while the Christian Greek culture not only allows, but actually encourages a wine culture and the Islamic Turkish culture disallowed wine, both cultures shared a devotion to `meze'. In fact, Ms. Algar traces the origins of meze to the pre-Islamic wine culture of Persia, where the original meze were sweets to counteract the bitter taste of young wine.
While Turkish meze are interesting, the real star of the Turkish cuisine is Borek, a dish which is a cross between filo dough and a baked pasta dish such as lasagna. Ms. Algar gives not just one recipe for Borek, but at least a half dozen from different areas of Turkey. For some of the recipes, Ms. Algar allows the use of either filo dough or frozen puff pastry, but for her two most important recipes for Anatolian and Circassian Borek, Ms. Algar gives us the straight scoop on how to make the real deal, very thin Borek dough similar to fresh egg noodles of northern Italy, but so thin that even a pasta machine set on it's smallest opening will not give you a fine enough dough. And yet, at 1 millimeter thick, it is not yet as thin as filo. So, while it belongs to the same family as Greek pilo and Hungarian strudel, it is not the same. Like fresh pasta in general, it is used to create many different dishes which are baked, fried, or sauteed, depending on filling and shape.
It is no surprise to the reasonably well informed foodie that coffee was a very important part of Turkish culture and cuisine and that coffee culture spread throughout Europe from its center in Istanbul. It is just slightly more surprising that the Turks invented the notion of the café. I take this with a small grain of salt, as I have read of fast food / wine bars in the ruins of Pompeii. What the Turks invented, I suspect, is the shop specializing in the sale of coffee, thereby originating the word `café'. Thus the idea of the casual food store goes back at least to Imperial Rome. It probably goes back to food stands serving the farm workers spending their flood induced vacations working on the pyramids.
Probably the biggest surprise was the fact that flavored sherberts, sorbets, and ices were such a common item in Ottoman courts. We are always so inclined to attribute these to the Italians, yet the Turks seem to have gotten this idea quite on their own, with the resources it took to store ice from the winter or from local mountaintops for a quick summer refreshment.
This is an excellent book and a welcome addition to the collection of anyone who loves to read about world food. It is also a superb source of dishes with healthy ingredients such as nuts, yoghurt, sesame, fruits, and light breads.

A good starter, but check before you hit the road.......2007-10-03
A good place to start, but when I checked the web sites for the first two hotels I wanted on my trip they were no longer pet friendly. I realize it can't be updated every few months so my advice is use the book a starting point but do your investigation to follow up on-line.
Great!.......2007-05-13
I had an earlier edition of this book, which I used a lot, but it got outdated. It is invaluable in searching out places that take pets. Gives you somewhere to start. I used internet sites too, but they are outdated, so I ordered this new edition.
Never travel without it!.......2007-04-12
My husband and I always travel with our dog, and that can make it difficult to find lodging. This book never lets us down. Aside from all the lodging listings there is a lot of general information about traveling with your pet. We bought a previous version and just about wore it out.
Helpful for pet owners.......2007-01-17
The most valuable asset of this listing is that it not only gives you the upper crust but even the more affordable motels and hotels sometimes even off the beaten path that will allow pets. This is good for those of us who don't only want the "inns" and hotels but just a nice stay in a clean place.
Great up-to-date information.......2005-08-02
Great for people planning both a long and short trip. I used the book for a cross country trip that went into Canada and found all the information up to date. The general travel tips and what to pack is also a big help.

More fluff than substance - Green glass "unknown mfg".......2006-01-31
After absolutely loving Mauzy's Depression Glass book this one was such a huge disappointment. The pictures are huge, many 1/2 a page, which seems was done to make the book appear more meaty.
Many of the green pieces are labeled as "unknown manfacturers", almost comical is a row of tumblers and sherbets (another row of vases) listed as "various manufacturers". That section of the book seems like they went to someone's house and just pictured each piece.
The coverage of salt and pepper shakers is quite good, almost as if that is what the book really was before adding "fluff" items. Very little information (such as dates) is given, though.
With the little information given, I just don't trust the prices as being any guideline whatsoever. Disappointed.
Update: I found the prices listed are 5 to 10 times realistic pricing, even for the fanciest shops. Even more disappointed now, it has cost me money.

Florence's Glass Kitchen Shakers 1930-1950s: Identification & Value Guide
ASIN: 076431226X |
Book Description
However depressing the Depression Era may have been, the manufacturers of glassware did their best to add color to peoples lives. The kitchens of America were awash in blue, green, pink, and golden glasswares, not to mention the opaque hues of Jadite, Delphite, and milk glass. Prominent among them were the milk glass spice shakers shown in this book. They are avidly collected today with lithographed (no decals) apples, birds, butterflies, cherries, cattails, dogs, Dutch motifs, flowers, fruit baskets, hats, figures, leaves, Mexican motifs, musketeers, Niagra Falls, sailboats, and more. For Depression glass collectors and shaker collectors alike, this is a valuable addition to the available literature. Hundreds of shakers are presented in 119 beautiful photographs. Prices are provided for each shaker, with check-off boxes to record additions to your collection. This book will delight and inform.
Customer Reviews:
Great pictures, realistic prices -- a well planned guide........2001-08-05
For the collector of kitchen shakers, especially shakers manufactured by Tipp City, Barbara has successfully captured a diversified collection of patterns and colors which have been wonderfully photographed so that you can see each shaker clearly and precisely. Yes Gene Florence has wonderful depression glass books but Barbara has the best pictures available at a reasonable price, especially to the beginner. A lot of designs have never even been found in a kitchen depression glassware book previously. The GUIDE is arranged to be used as a check off for collectors. Prices are much more realistic than in the latest book by Gene Florence. Nothing against Gene Florence, I have all of his books, but many of the pages are exact repeats of previous editions. Let's give Barbara a chance and a hand for taking on the job of presenting a colorful and informative book on kitchen shakers with realistic prices. I hope she will be motivated enough to come out with a second edition when additional shakers are found for inclusion. I have bought and sold hard-to-find kitchen shakers for over twenty years and I certainly wish this book had happened on the scene a long time ago when prices were $5.00 a shaker. Kitchen depression shakers are very much in demand and a lot of the new collectors need as much information and reference material as possible. Thank you Barbara for your time and effort in this book. This is one dealer that really appreciates it.
GREAT REFERENCE BOOK!.......2001-08-01
Even though this book is limited to a particular group of Depression Era kitchen shakers (milk glass with lithographs and I am biased to these!!), it is an EXCELLENT reference guide for those of you who collect them! And if you do collect them, the check-off boxes are a handy item. GREAT SIZE for taking to those flea markets and auctions to see what you need to have! The prices listed are a good start to bargain with! BEAUTIFUL color photos of the shakers. It sits on my coffee table! Thanks, Barbara!
Go buy it!.......2001-07-31
GO BUY IT NOW! This book is an excellent and virtually complete book of shakers. The pictures are beautiful and the prices are great, too! I would highly recommend this book to shaker collectors as it is much better than any book Gene Florence has ever put out! All I can say is: Go buy it now!
Best book ever!.......2001-07-31
I recently purchased this marvelous comprehensive book and I cannot believe the superior quality! The pictures are unbelievably clear and I love the checkoff boxes to keep my collection organized. The prices are much more accurate than I have ever seen! Say good-bye to Florence and hello to Mauzy!
As Close To Useless As Could Be.......2001-07-19
Awful. Just awful. I know the book is inexpensive, but I literally would not have paid more than 25 cents for it if I had seen it before purchase. Very little information about few types of shakers. Spend a little more for the excellent Gene Florence book.

found to be useful.......2007-10-03
this book was well organized in its presentation of problems for each type of plant covered. set in A-Z format of common plant names (though Latin names are used as well), the editors (Barbara Ellis, and Fern Bradley)give several ways to combat garden issues from an organic methodology. most of the ways of working with organics that they outline are not high cost, but are high maintainence as is all organic gardening, if done right.
the book also covers some common insects a gardener would see and if they are beneficial or not and how to work with the beneficials (what to plant to attract, etc) and to control the "bad bugs". they also outline some diseases and how to fight those with organic methods. then they touch on other ways to fight garden pests (cultural, physical, and biological contols). they also talk about different organic dusts and sprays and how to use them effectively.
Organic gardener's bible.......2007-10-02
If you want to garden organically and can only afford to buy one book on insect and disease control -- this is it! I go for this book first whenever I think I have problems in the garden, in the landscape, in the orchard. It's an all around great reference book!

Well done history of interesting person and time.......2007-07-25
One can only criticize this book for the word "Mammy" in the title if one has not read the book. Note the quotation marks. A central theme in the book is the racial stereotypes and misperceptions of Mary Ellen Pleasant. Actually the book needs to focus on the racial context because of Pleasant's struggles for equality and because of her need to keep opaque many details of her life, personality and business affairs. Despite the somewhat sketchy nature of what we know of these matters, the topic is still fascinating and the book is pleasantly written.
She's No Mammy...........2007-07-08
I've done a little research on this powerful black woman who wanted to help black people become free of slavery and I came across her writings that she never wanted to be called Mammy. That's what the white mind saw her as and called her in those times. Why would someone want to call her Mammy in this day and age???
This is a reflection of the unconscious racism that exist in the minds of some white people today.;
