Book Description

Iditarod musher Jessie Arnold is being stalked and terrorized by an anonymous enemy. First, one of her sled dogs is badly injured in a steel trap and an ominous note leaves no doubt that the trap was set with malicious intent. Threatening phone calls and unsigned messages follow -- pressing Alaska State Trooper Alex Jensen to urge Jessie to go into hiding while he tries to track down the source of the threats. Finally, a near fatal car crash convinces Jessie to let Alex fly her to an isolated island more than two hundred miles away.

There on desolate, windswept Kachemak Bay, Jessie hikes the island trails with her lead dog Tank, marveling at the splendor of her solitude. But in a wilderness filled with hazards and hiding places, she soon discovers she is not alone. With Alex searching for a madman hundreds of miles away, Jessie is on her own...playing a deadly game of hide and seek with a killer. <

2 out of 5 stars Good premise, poor delivery.......2007-09-13

DEADFALL was my first exposure to Sue Henry's writings, and probably my last, as well. The plot was well conceived and the location interesting, but the execution left a lot to be desired. The author makes many glaring errors, and the heroine is rather foolishly displayed. Her moronic actions in confrontations with the killer were so frustrating that I kept screaming out loud, "Just shoot him, you idiot! Geez, how stupid are you?". Ms. Henry would do well to hire a ghostwriter to rewrite this piece. Then perhaps a worthwhile mystery would emerge. For a true master of the mystery genre, try Tony Hillerman's Navajo Mysteries. The audio tapes and CDs from Recorded Books are priceless; pass on the Books On Tape offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Deadfall.......2004-07-10

This is an excellent book that is loaded with suspense. I've read most of Sue Henry's Alaska mysteries and loved them all.

2 out of 5 stars Deadfall Falls Dead.......2004-03-15

Once again, the characters are weak; the plot is thin and this mystery has all the flavor of sidewalk chalk. A couple of the dogs surface momentarily but immediately disappear into the blank landscape.

4 out of 5 stars Great Suspense.......2003-02-09

I enjoyed this book for the suspense - it had plenty. Jessie shines in this one. I was puzzled by the convoluted motives of the bad guy.I guess Sue Henry wanted to make the book as mysterious as possible. I felt the frustration that the main characters had, but went along with the story anyway. I felt strongly agitated when the bad guy went after the dogs. I would give a lot to have a friend like Tank.:) The ending was really a reach but all's well that ends well. Altogether it was a competent and enjoyable read. On to the next.

3 out of 5 stars Reading this book was a pleasure, but there were faults.......2002-11-15

I have to say that the quality of writing, the setting, action and details in this book were excellent, and the story well put together. I guess I would give it 3 and a half stars really. I haven't read the other books in the series, and this book is prompting me to find the others to read. Dispite the problems with the book, the richly described setting and conflict pulled me in.

The book does something of a "time jump" in which every other chapter is devoted to charachters in seperate places, and are also seperated by a day. I think this was a clumsy, and somewhat confusing way to let readers in on some facts.

Like other readers, I found the motive too far fetched to involve the people it did. Why didn't the perp just go directly to the problem he had?? I would say more but I don't want to give it away. Jessie took some actions which I keept thinking "No! Don't do that!" at her in the final conflict. Also, Jessie's conflict of independance vs. commitment to Alex, was, I felt, an afterthought to the story which soured an otherwise good ending.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2007-01-10

This book is very informative. It answered a lot of questions that I had about female sexuality--the kind of questions I don't even feel comfortable asking my close female friends about. I had never experienced an orgasm prior to reading this book, and I didn't think it would ever happen for me--I thought I was inorgasmic. This books points out that I was pre-orgasmic--and what do you know, I was about halfway into the book when I crossed over. I am now able to orgasm fairly regularly!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting historical study on achieving orgasm........2006-12-30

The book is a touch dated, though I do suspect there are women out there grappeling with their sexuality either way. The approach is so sterile that I imagine it would be hard for anyone to achieve self-gratification through the use of this book. There are better books out there for that - this book was crafted at a time when it wasn't easy to be explicit, and so it's not.

5 out of 5 stars Your not crazy.......2006-02-25

This was a very informative and helpful book. It tells you all the things you wanted them to tell you, but they didn't, in that sex-ed class we all have in school. Has great ideas for learning to grow as a person by realizing that everyone has sexual wants and desires, it is normal. I think men should read it too.

5 out of 5 stars Long live the clitoris!.......2004-06-07

Originally published in 1975 during the height of the womens lib movement, this is THE classic text to help women understand their own sexual response and become orgasmic - with or without a partner. This book has the potential to cause a revolutionary shift in the consciousness of women who persist in believing that the penis is king, i.e., that women can only have orgasms with the assistance of a thrusting male member. Wrong, wrong, WRONG. The penis is NOT a necessary condition for female orgasm. Barbach notes in the opening chapter that "minor surgery can be performed on the inner two thirds of the vagina without an anesthetic." So in reality, it is the clitoris and not the vagina that is the female sex organ. The clitoris exists purely to provide women with sexual pleasure. It's funny how the clitoris is no where near the vaginal opening. Nature's little joke? Perhaps. The message of Dr. Barbach's book: women, take responsibility for your own sexual pleasure, and don't wait around for the "Magic Penis" or "Mr. Right" to give you that elusive orgasm.

5 out of 5 stars I'm grateful for this book!.......2003-06-05

I just finished reading this book last night. When I first picked it up and read the first few chapters, I was so engrossed that I couldn't put it down. Within the first few pages I felt like the author was addressing me personally. Before this book I really thought I was the only woman on planet Earth that couldn't have an orgasm and I felt very uncomfortable sharing this problem with anyone for fear that I'd be told that I was a freak of nature and would need to be shot to be put out of my misery. I was so relieved to find that there was actually a whole book written about this problem and that I was not alone.

Some readers here have commented that certain sections of the book are outdated, especially the parts that deal with the distorted ways that women are brought up to view sex, but believe me, there are still a lot of us out there that were brought this way and I'm only 28. Cultural and religious background may have a big impact on this. I had a Hispanic, Catholic upbringing. But this book never speaks to a specific type of woman, it speaks to ALL women, in a warm, straighforward manner. The concept is that physiologically, we are all the same.

Indeed the one and only thing that I found quite disturbing about this book is in the Chapter on how to bring your children up to be sexually healthy. It straight up says it's okay to have sexual feelings and fantasies about your children, just don't act upon those feelings. I'm not a psychologist but that doesn't sound right to me. I think someone who has those thoughts and feelings towards a child, no matter whose they are, probably has some other sexual issues and should seek some professional help!

Other than that, I can honestly say this book changed me. I gradually felt a difference in my attitude towards sex, which has made me a happier person in general. I don't feel angry and resentful towards sex as I used to. I would recommend this book to any woman who feels anxiety or stress towards sex. At the very least you should give it a shot, it's an easy read. I'm not done going through the exercises in this book but I am grateful just for the fact that it has changed my views on sex and has made me so comfortable with my sexuality and femininity.

I was browsing through this little book, happily taking in all of its wine information, when I came across this little gem on page 94. "Beaujolais Nouveau is the fun party wine!....By French law, this wine must be released on the third Thursday in November--just in time for Thanksgiving--and drunk no earlier than 12:01 A.M. on that date."

While it is true that our Thanksgiving came from Europeans who were continuing the tradition of a harvest festival, Thanksgiving as we know it is a U.S. and Canadian holiday. How did this get by the book's editors. Now I wonder about the other information in the book.

Actually this is a great book to have if you plan on getting a dog or you already own a dog. Easy to read and understand. It covers everything from A-Z on caring for your dog from a young puppy to the senior citizen. I will recommend this book to all my puppy, basic and advance students.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to buy *before* you get your dog.......2002-11-21

Despite its title, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting and Owning a Dog," isn't for idiots at all. Instead, people who buy it will be savvy dog owners with a plethora of information at their fingertips. I hope people will buy this book before they buy their dog.

This new book by Sheila Webster Boneham is an especially good one for those who have never owned a dog before, or who may have had a dog, but who didn't explore all the facets of dog ownership. She offers a lot of suggestions about what to consider before getting a dog.

She covers everything from selecting a breed that fits your lifestyle, to what supplies you need to get when you bring your pet home. In a chapter on "Size and Other Big Decisions," she asks the important question, "What do you want from your dog?" Many people don't consider this before they bring that cute puppy home, yet the answers will determine whether you have a dog you love, but don't like, or have the perfect canine soul mate.

Boneham handles potentially controversial topics -- like vaccinations and feeding methods -- fairly and objectively. So new owners are aware of the pros and cons, and more importantly where and how to get more information.

Her chapter on "What Every Dog Should Know" has good advice on training and reinforcement. She urges her readers to take their dogs to at least one good obedience class. There is a helpful list suggesting how to tell if an instructor is qualified to teach the class. One suggestion is to not be shy about asking the instructor what her credentials are. As an obedience instructor, I would love to have someone ask me this, because it gives me a chance to brag about my dogs, and the dogs of former students.

A special gem of information is in a section on "Living with more than one dog."

"If you try to apply human ideas about equality and fairness to your family of dogs, you create confusion. For instance, if you try to treat the dogs equally and you alternate who gets a treat first 'to be fair' you undermine the dominant or alpha dog's position. In a pack, the alpha eats first, gets the best bed and controls the resources. If your alpha dog is hogging the chewy toys and you take them from him and divvy them up, you again undermine his position."

So many people do not understand this concept, so it is especially valuable to have it explained in this book for new dog owners.

There's also a nice chapter on canine medical emergencies, including what to include in a first aid kit.

The jacket notes indicate that Boneham competes in a variety of dog sports with her dogs, and does dog-assisted therapy as well. This experience comes through in her well-written book.

All in all, this is a terrific book, at a great price, and one I can heartily recommend to new dog and puppy owners.

                  5 out of 5 stars rare scholarship!.......2000-10-10

The volumes present a rather rare glimpse at a long period in the history of Judaism in Mesopotamia (ca. 227 BCE- 700 CE), which was, almost entirely, under the control of two successive Iranian dynasties (Arsacid and Sasanid). The area bordered on the western frontier of India and the eastern frontier of Rome, extending from the Tigris-Euphrates to India and into central Asia. The Persian/Iranian influence upon Judaism and its history is believed to have begun from 539 BCE when Palestine was under the rule of the Iranian Achaemenid empire which controlled the region until 332 BCE (the Persian Period), during the Macedonian conquest of the region by Alexander. Extensive studies on Jewish history in Persia/Iran simply do not exist, and the main reason that Persia/Iran has fared so poorly at the hands of posterity is due to the paucity of sources. Our primary sources come mainly from Greek & Latin (classical) sources who were interested in Iran only at the specific points at which Persia interested Greece or Rome. Their comments on Iranian political and cultural affairs were based on second-hand information, embellished with occidental disdain for the alien orient which seems to have held up firmly against Roman political and military propaganda. Since both the Iranian and Jewish sources (apart from Josephus) are neither widely known nor, by those who know them, historically interpreted, the author has not hesitated to extensively cite the relevant Talmudic documents. The author's aim in these volumes is mainly to reconstruct the historical and socio-political aspects of Babylonian Judaism, rather than aspects of Iranian religious and cross-cultural influences, an ambiguous and yet much debated topic in Near Eastern and religious scholarship.

                          Book Description

For six decades, betwen 1854 and 1904, Amos Webberr, a black freeman living in the north, recorded his daily experience in diaries. In 1985 Bancroft Prize-winnning historian Nick Salvatore discovered them in a Harvard library. Salvatore has woven Webber's diaries into a landmark biography of an ordinary man pursuing a rich and independent life even as he shrewdly observed the society that freed black people from slavery also banished them to the margins of history. 5 out of 5 stars The significance of fraternal organizations.......2003-07-18

Amos Webber maintained a chronicle, a history. He belonged to the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows. Membership in this organization provided historian Mick Salvatore with a clue to assess the "Thermometer Book" of Amos Webber, a detailed impersonal chronicle, and to find the history of the man, Amos Webber, a light-skinned African American, a soldier in the 5th Cavalry. Webber was born in 1826 in a small town in Bucks County Pennsylvania. He moved to Philadelphia when a young man and attended the Presbyterian Church. Webber's political activism was nurtured by the organizations to which he belonged. One black Presbyterian minister declared that he would preach the Declaration of Independence until it began to be put into practice. Salvatore writes of abolitionist activities in Philadelphia and festivals, such as the one held to celebrate the abolition of slavery in the West Indies in 1838. Webber underscored the significance of John Brown's activities. Webber enjoyed a niche in society akin to that occupied by the white middle class.

There was a popular interest in meteorology. By the 1830's there were a series of civilian observers organized by leading scientific investigators. Amos Webber had little formal education. His weather book served multiple purposes of weather journal, commentary on natural patterns, and a way to record his observations of the world around him. His weather books included press clippings. Webber's employer went bankrupt and the business closed in 1860. The Webber family moved to Worcester, Massachusetts. The first volume of his chronicle concluded in October 1860. The start of the second volume is a decade later. Webber was employed in a wire mill. Black collective life appeared thin in comparison to Philadelphia. In Worcester the fall of Sumter caused general excitement. In January 1864 Amos Webber reported to Camp Meigs at Readville, Massachusetts for service in Company D, Fifth Massachusetts Cavalry. Webber was rapidly elevated from private to sergeant. In the 1870's Masonic and Odd Fellow Lodges for African Americans were established in Worcester. Webber participated in these in leadership positions. After the Hayes compromise in 1876 Webber never mentioned reconstruction or its demise in his chronicles. Amos Webber died in 1904. His death was reported to the weekly meeting of Post 10 Grand Army of the Republic. Black fraternal organizations sent wreaths. Webber had intense political and moral views. He had been married for fifty two years. His chronicle was largely silent about women. He had inhabited a male world. He understood racism. His beliefs and actions included a persistent demonstration of equality.

It is very interesting to get an insight into a life of a single black man around the turn of the century. But it sure was boring to read. I you are interested in the topic, read it - but make sure you have a pillow near by becuase you will be snoring.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Engaging, Informative.......2002-08-17

Sometimes one learns more about history by accident, and it tells its own tale reluctantly if we are receptive to listening. Essentially, that is what happened to Dr. Nick Salvatore one day while digging in the archives of the Harvard Library. What he uncovered led him on a journey of discovery that he had not anticipated, but by which he became completely engaged for the next several years. Salvatore, a professor at Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, offers us a biography of a rather reluctant and seemingly unlikely subject, Amos Webber, a free African-American man who lived, worked, and journalled in 19th century New England.
Webber was a keen observer of people, politics, and the African American condition before, during, and after the American Civil War right up until his death in 1904. His penned thoughts on the Reconstruction era offer an important insight into the African American point of view during a seminal period in their journey towards freedom and equality. Through Amos Webber's writings one can sense the optimism, feel the despair and disappointment, and his continued commitment to furthering the causes of personal agency, self-determination, suffrage, equality, and the nurturing of a strong African-American Community. These are the very currents which resonate so strongly throughout his journals and which allow the reader to obtain a more insightful glimpse into the world of Amos Webber and his worldview throughout his life.
Historical biography is a difficult subject to master when the author does not have the benefit of previous scholars' interpretations as a foundation to build upon; much less when the subject of that biography has been dead for over ninety years, has no known family members or contemporaries to interview, and who's only personal affects extant are a sparsely personal, albeit meticulously kept, series of journals with which to begin working. That is precisely what Salvatore accomplished with this work. Because of his background as a social historian Salvatore was predisposed to looking at what lay between the lines; what was unsaid, and adding sufficient social context to make it an important work in the fields of: African American History, Political History, Labor History, and Urban History of the 19th century.
Salvatore succeeds in this endeavor in a way that is both historically informative and personally poignant by offering a thematic continuity to Webber's life, speaking specifically to his life, and on a larger scale to the free, northern, urban, African-American experience en mass. To illustrate his thesis, Salvatore explores such themes as: the individual as a part of the community; urban space and identity in the 19th century; the vantage of a free African-American on the issue of slavery and self-determination; and the role of Institutions and social movements in the African-American community in the 19th century. These thematic vehicles enable the reader to consider the richness and depth of the subject and elicit empathy for what so often has gone unrecognized in the general understanding of 19th century African American history.
To illustrate these varying themes, bringing to life Webber's career as a soldier, citizen and "activist," Salvatore enlists a mélange of additional outside sources such as: census records, demographic studies, newspaper extracts, the discussion of the Abolition movement; regimental histories from the Civil War, church records, and minutes from the meetings of fraternal organizations. All work in concert to aide him in contextualizing the life of his subject in a way that makes Webber's individual journal entries even more poignant than they might otherwise seem. As readers, we are offered an intimate picture of Webber's life and the African American community of Worchester, Massachusetts during the 19th century, by examining the social and political interests of the man and of his community.
Salvatore's style, while at times tersely laden with discussion of the social climate and interests of Amos Webber, none-the-less, offers a very thoroughly constructed, eloquently written, and sensitively handled biography. However, one area of weakness in Salvatore's work, whether it was due to a lack of source material, a lack of interest, or a deliberate oversight, is that there is little discussion devoted to Amos Webber's family relationships, or lack thereof. While Webber did not write about his family in his own journals, neither did Salvatore make an effort to go beyond that to investigate the matter. This reviewer finds that, while every other aspect of Webber's life was given due and thorough attention, the author would have better served his reader by giving some additional information about Webber's extended family. In the 19th century one's relationship with his or her family was a primary focus for every American.
"We've All Got History. ...It's there. You just got to look for it," a quote which Salvatore attributes to Ellen L. Hazard, a descendant of a friend and compatriot of Amos Webber's, is a hauntingly prophetic and poignant comment that encapsulates the very process by which Nick Salvatore approached Amos Webber's life. He took the skeleton of Webber's personal journal and successfully fleshed it out to encompass an entire social-cultural movement, allowing the reader to see the world as Webber himself saw it and adding a background to help better understand the importance of the role of individuals, great and small, during a time that was formative for the African-American community. We've All Got History... is very rich in detail and life, a biography that will stand as an important work in the genre of historical biography.
