Book Description
Catherine LeVendeur is a young scholar come to conquer her sin of pride at the Convent of the Paraclete, famous for learning, prayer, and its abbess, the fabled Heloise. When a manuscript the convent produced for the great Abbe Suger disappears, rumors surface saying the book contains sacrilegious passages and will be used to condemn Heloise's famous lover, Peter Abelard. To save her Order, and protect all she holds dear, Catherine must find the manuscript and discover who altered the text. She will risk disgrace, the wrath of her family and the Church, and confront an evil older than Time itself--and, if she isn't careful, lose her immortal soul. With Death Comes As Epiphany, the first in the Catherine LeVendeur mystery series, medievalist Sharan Newman has woven dark mystery and sparkling romance into a fascinating and richly detailed tapestry of everyday life in twelfth-century France, and one of the most moving love stories of all time: Abelard and Heloise.
Customer Reviews:
An imaginative mystery based on the philosophy of Peter Abelard ..........2007-08-19
Fans of historical fiction as well as mystery may enjoy this book. Opening a few years before the death of Peter Abelard (d. 1142), it revolves around the basic tenets of his religious philosophy. The love story of Abelard and Héloïse serve both as a backdrop and as the outline for the romantic sub-theme involving the main character, Catherine LeVendeur.
The mystery is pure good versus evil, but it is not as simple as it may seem. Readers may want to brush up on the basics of Abelard's philosophy to recognize the parallels. Also, the storytelling is skilled so that whodunnit remains a mystery until the end.
The book opens what promises to be an excellent medieval mystery series.
disappointing.......2006-10-20
I've always been interested in the Heloise and Abelard story, and I've loved other historical murder mysteries (like Elllis Peter's ), so I had great hopes when I read the descriptions of this. There are some good points about the story, but I found the characterization poor. I finished it, but only because I didn't have any interesting books on hand. This is the first in a series and perhaps the author becomes more proficient as it goes on.

Excellent Historical Mystery.......2004-05-17
Catherine, a novice at the Paraclete, finds herself embroiled in a mystery outside the safe walls of the convent. Newman makes medieval Paris come alive, gives flesh to Abelard and Heloise, and writes an incredible first novel. This is by far the best of the series and a must read for fans of historical mysteries.
A Charming Medieval Series........2003-08-06
This is the first book in the Catherine LeVendeur series, and it appears to be a strong entry. I am certainly interested in reading this series further. It is set in 12th century France and Catherine is novice in a nunnery. When the book opens she has not taken her final vows. Catherine is asked by her Mother Superior to retrieve something that has been found near her home so she leaves the convent to do so. She gets embroiled in a nasty conspiracy that forces her to use all her wits to keep herself and an interesting scholar that she meets out of trouble. There's lots of excitement - dead bodies, stolen gems and more plots and counterplots within a great abby. Catherine manages to uncover all the mysteries, and finds love at the same time. This book has a bit more romance in it than I usually go for in mysteries, but it's fun all the same.

Fluff.......2005-01-15
ACORNA'S PEOPLE , 4 ,
Acorna the unicorn girl was rescued at a very young age by three space miners who happened to stumble across an odd escape pod carrying the youngster. For all their gruffness and inexperience, the three did a very respectable job of raising the precocious child. Acorna grew up to be a very intelligent, resourceful, and caring young woman. With the ability to heal the hurts of others with her horn, Acorna also became a popular "Goddess-like" figure to many.
While saving a planet that was held hostage in the grasp of the Piper, Acorna made herself numerous friends. Children who had been slaves were free to have a decent life, no more working in brothels or mines, no more being ill-used at the hands of cruel adults. Acorna also managed to make herself an enemy, one who returns to the picture in this third book of the series. The daughter of the Piper seeks to eradicate the one who ruined an empire she would have ruled, and take revenge for the death of her father. Kisla is a very unstable personality, capable of great cruelty, and she hungers to make Acorna hurt.
Acorna managed to find her true people in the last installment, and the Linyaari are a peace-loving telepathic race. Sadly, when Acorna finally makes her way to them, they aren't exactly welcoming of this strange young woman with her aggressive ways. Danger has dogged Acorna all the way, although she didn't know it, and when her people disappear in a mysterious fashion in space, she decides to find out why.
With the help of Becker, a rather ribald trader in space junk, and his special temple cat Road Kill, also known as plain old RK, Acorna is able to locate the lost resting place of her ancestors. As well, she is able to rescue her captive kin from the deranged Kisla and bring them all to safety. Naturally, there is a great deal of help from her adoptive family, those she has helped along the way, as well as those who just plain admire everything that Acorna stands for.
Although this was an easy and comfortable read - the authors work literary magic in their combined style - I found myself having to fight to finish it. To be honest, this is the third book in a series that I've yet to complete and I am dreading the fight to the end. It's so saccharine and easy to guess the outcome; I expected something more from two talented and very experienced authors. I am disappointed that Acorna seems to walk through everything without ever really being in serious danger, even when she is threatened, you know she'll be okay. It's a bit of a letdown for the reader.
It's worth reading if only to find out that Acorna breezed through yet another possible tragedy without much effort. If you happen to like sweetness and sunlight, then this is definitely for you. I only hope that the next segment of Acorna's life will hold more to keep me interested, this was nothing but "fluff" in my opinion.

Lots of fun.......2003-07-30
Besides a new planet full of unicorn-people, "Acorna's People" brings with it another introduction to the Acorna universe - a new co-author. And we can see it in the writing style. This book lacks the near-scientific plausiblity of the first two books that obviously came from mathematician-author Margaret Ball, but the introduction of the *wonderful* characters of Becker and Roadkill (the aspect of the book I loved the most) which I expect were largely Elizabeth Ann Scarborough's creations, made it a delightful read for me. I loved that their characters are continued into the following volumes.
Love and Peace,

Excellent read, from the writer of the Pern series.......2002-10-06
Hurray, finally another great series from Anne Mccaffery! I was addicted to the Dragons series from Pern. And she continues the magic with Acorna and her friends. I really enjoyed reading this book, and can happily recommend this book and the other Acorna books to you!

This continues the saga of the unicorn girl. It is on the edge of believability and very entertaining. I enjoyed the book and will buy the next one, but I will wait for the paperback.

The "meantime," according to best-selling author and inspirational speaker Iyanla Vanzant, is that in-between stage of life when you're gathering up strength, evaluating past mishaps, and preparing for the next chapter. Using the metaphor of psyche as house, Vanzant believes that the meantime offers a perfect opportunity for tackling a rigorous cleaning. "We are going to go through every inch of your emotional and spiritual house and clean up the mess, clear out the debris, fix the leaks, stop the squeaks, and reveal and repair any damage we can find," she promises in this workbook. Readers who felt soothed and inspired by Vanzant's In the Meantime will probably appreciate this floor-by-floor companion workbook. Every chapter of Living Through the Meantime contains an assortment of "Caring Exercises," ranging from affirmations, such as "I now place my faith in the power and presence of God's love" to quasi-therapeutic fill-in-the-blanks statements. (For example, "My earliest experience of feeling betrayed was ___.") Vanzant is not the most eloquent or sophisticated of writers, but she does seem to touch people's hearts and crack them open. Her main agendas are self-reflection and trust in God. Fans who are ready to tackle a hefty self-improvement project will not be disappointed with this workbook. Newcomers should check out her earlier book before committing to this one. -- Gail Hudson

Didn't care for it.......2007-10-10
This was not my first book by her but this was the first one I didn't care for. I was very disapointed when I open the book. I was under the impression I would be able to work on my inner self. However, this book might work for others but not me. It ask me question that I was not able to answer. ex. Things about my mom. (mom died at early age) alot of the question I couldn't answer due to I don't know most of my family or know my family history. So I became very frustrated with the book an put it down and never looked at it again. I do feel if you have a strong connection or have been around your family enough you will be abe to work through the book. Good luck to other who might try

I just love this woman's deep passion and if you ever hear her speak ... you just get it in the gut how close to the bone her wisdom is! The tone is simple but the actions they inspire are not. It is not easy to be breaking lifelong habits and cleaning the residue of all the years they operated unconsciously in you. But ... it can be done ... and worth it. No one ever won an Olympic God Medal without the agony of hard endurance training over many years. Hence, why the meantime is just as precious as the moment on the podium.

Book Description
Choosing a bottle of wine should be fun, not frightening. After all, one of the most important elements of enjoying wine is not so much the vintage or the vineyard but the occasion on which it is enjoyed.

Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion, Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, authors of the popular weekly "Tastings" column in the
Wall Street Journal, give you the kind of honest, accessible wine information that is hard to find.
In
Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion, Dottie and John, as they are known to their fans, answer the most frequently asked questions about what wine to drink on specific occasions. They cover all the bases: What wine should I put away for my newborn's twenty-first birthday? What wine is best with Thanksgiving turkey? They also suggest ways in which wine can make every day a little bit more of an occasion -- how to throw a wine tasting, how to start a wine-tasting group, even how to add wine to your tailgating party. And they share scores of tips from people like you.

Easy and entertaining reading. Enables you to learn some things about wine without feeling like you have to study to do so.
The Love of Wines.......2004-12-02
This is the third book (plus one revised) on wine authored by Dottie & John, two very talented writers for the Wall Street Journal. If you enjoyed their first two books, you will love this one. As you probably already know, their books are not intended to be atlases of viticulture, but are "how to books" on the enjoyment of wine and how wine impacts our day to day life. How wine makes daily events more meaningful and helps to rekindle memories of remote events. The book should be read as a novel -- cover to cover -- as there are pearls of information in every chapter, including hints on how to tour domestic and foreign wine regions, on shopping for wine, gift suggestions, wine websites, and of course multiple suggestions for wines for any occasion. Most importantly, this book describes how hundreds of others across the world and you the reader can integrate the love of wine into your daily life.
A fantastic book that introduces people to wine! .......2004-11-19
It is a very unpretentious book that helps people choose and enjoy wine. I tremendously enjoyed the writing style of the two authors, as it was down to earth and very personal. A great book!

Thought-Provoking, But Not Definitive.......2007-06-14
Kaufman's basic assumption is that the alliance between African-Americans and Jews was never as smooth as history makes it out to be. By exhaustively researching that alliance and presenting it through the points of view of six prominent leaders of the Civil Rights movement, Kaufman provides a unique overview of the racial issues of the previous century, but it is not without flaws. First, like many liberals, Kaufman is too broad-minded to take his own side in an argument. Thus, he goes into great detail in explaining away Black antisemitism, but never seems to realize that there is no Jewish equivalent. Black outrage over the lack of Jewish support for affirmative action is constantly brought up throughout the book, but the use of quotas to restrict Jewish admissions to Ivy League schools is mentioned only twice, creating the impression that Jews were opposed to affirmative action out of a desire to avoid competition, rather than out of fear of being shut out (again) of the professions. He routinely glosses over the records of many of the militant Black leaders who took over after Dr. King's assassination, making them seem simply outspoken or radical, rather than thuggish or criminal, as in the case of the Black Panthers, for example. Anti-semitic acts are routinely explained away as having been taken out of context (his history of the Oceanhill-Brownsville controversy provides a context for the reading of a virulently anti-semitic poem on WBAI that all-but excuses it). His coverage of the Crown Heights riots (in the updated version of the book) avoids mentioning critical facts about the murder of Yankel Rosenbaum and subsequent acquittal of Lemrick Nelson which cast the Black community in a poor light (the jury actually partied with Nelson after the acquittal). The final chapter of the book is a discussion of the importance of the alliance, but it is written on the presumption that political conservatives dislike both Blacks and Jews and are relishing the fight, which is stated explicitly, and which diminishes the value of the book as a historical record. In the end, it's simply an attempt to get Jews to keep giving money to Democrats and Blacks to continue to vote for them so that they can defeat those evil conservatives. Given the rise of anti-semitism since 9/11, the history in this book is even more critical to understanding the schisms in American culture, but Kaufman's bias reduces its value, taking what could have been the definitive history of a critical alliance in the Civil Right movement and reducing it to a partisan appeal.
An interesting anecdotal look at the Black-Jewish alliance.......2005-03-21
This book takes a good look at some social problems in America. It was written in 1988, but I have the updated edition from 1995.
Blacks and Jews are minorities that cooperated during the civil rights struggles of the early 1960s. And there is still some cooperation on that issue, as various states continue to discriminate against minority voters.
We see some of the cooperation and also some of the problems as this book as the experiences of six different people are examined in detail.
Paul Parks, a Black who joined the civil rights movement in the 1960s, in chosen as an example of one who valued a Black-Jewish alliance. In April 1945, he was one of the soldiers who liberated the concentration camp at Dachau. But in 1967, he noted that there were complaints by some Blacks about Jewish landlords in the ghettos. Parks wanted to distinguish between the slumlords and those Whites who were actively helping the Blacks, given that without White support, Black causes would be hurt. But we see how many of the more politically involved Blacks thought of the Jews not as another minority but as part of the White majority.
Next, we see Jack Greenberg and Esther Brown, who filed a landmark suit against segregated schools (Brown versus the Board of Education). These were Jews who saw the issue "not as a Negro cause but as a human cause." Still, there were problems when some Blacks decided to boycott a class that Greenberg taught at Harvard on "Race and the Law" to protest the fact that the instructor was not Black.
After that, there is the story of Rhody McCoy, a Black who became the head of the Ocean Hills-Brownsville school district in New York City. Right away, there was a problem with a teacher strike. McCoy kept the schools open by hiring sustitute teachers, but this soured relations with the strikers. The issue became bigger, bitter, and painful, and certainly reduced cooperation among Blacks and Jews in the city.
The story Kaufman tells next is of Roz Ebstein and her family. Hers was just one of many Jewish families in Chicago that supported the civil rights movement in the 1960s. But we discover the effects of blockbusting, as her neighborhood, rather than becoming integrated, simply became almost exclusively Black. Eventually, she and her family felt forced to move to a new neighborhood, a few miles away, in order to be in a better school district and to avoid harrassment from Blacks.
There is an excellent section about Martin Peretz, who became the editor of The New Republic in 1974. Right away, we see one effect of Black-Jewish cooperation, namely that some Jews who learned more about Black culture and history decided they might as well learn about Jewish culture and history as well. Peretz, a liberal, couldn't stand Begin, a conservative Israeli Prime Minister. But Peretz made a point of supporting Israel's right to exist in the New Republic. Peretz, a stong supporter of civil rights, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the civil rights movement. But a turning point came in 1967, with the National Convention on New Politics. This group became dominated by radicals who tended to ignore problems of poverty, oppression, the war in Vietnam, racism, and discrimination and instead attacked Zionism. Peretz was more cautious about which groups he supported after that.
The final chapter is about Donna Brazile, a well-known political campaign chairwoman. We see her introduction to issues that were separating Blacks and Jews: Jewish landlords, failure of some Jews to support affirmative action, and failure of some Blacks to support Israel. Plus, some specific problems, such as the firing of Andrew Young as UN ambassador and Black Presidential candidate Jesse Jackson meeting with terrorist leader Yasser Arafat. Through all this, Brazile kept her focus on trying to get as diverse and inclusive group of supporters as possible in her campaigns.
I was struck by the mention of Alice Walker, who wrote "The Color Purple." Walker is well-known as a sensitive and thoughtful person. The book tells that when asked about Farrakhan, she condemned him as a bigot and an antisemite. But the book also tells of Walker's attitude about Israel, and this shocked me. I'm not asking that she favor some minority, whether it be Blacks, Jews, Pagans, or anyone else. But I am asking someone with her credentials to support human rights against aggressive and lying tyrants, thugs, and bullies. I feel that Walker should have found some way to oppose antizionism very strongly, and I certainly condemn her for not doing so.
I think the issue of cooperation among minorities is important. There is a tendency for minorities, often in an effort to win favor with the majority, to show hostility to other minorities. That is not the true path.
I recommend this book.
Very honest personal stories.......2004-05-31
I highly recommend this book - particularly the section on "the last Jewish liberals" who tried to make integration, civil rights work for their family in a changing South Side Chicago neighborhood.
It didn't work, they eventually fled the lowrer class, Black takeover and moved to the suburbs, only they stayed longer than the other Whites.
The book works well because the author writes very personal stories that present the truth about what happened.
history of Jews-African Americans.......2002-01-22
Both Jews and blacks have suffered greatly in various parts of the world. In the United States, there has been somewhat of alliance between the two groups. Brokedn Alliances deals with this alliance, like the NAACP having many Jewish lawyers and how Jews and Blacks came toghether for the civil rights movement. It also deals with how these groups have been losing contact due many factors like black anti-semitism and the importance of Israel to American Jews.
Broken alliances is definetely something people should read if they want a better understanding of the history of race relations.
Penetrating perspective.......2001-08-03
The Jews and African Americans share a history of suffering and bigotry unequaled in recent times. History suggests that they should be the closest of partners in dealing with these issues. However to read the news you would think that they were historical enemies. This has not always been true. The Alliance between Jews and African Americans was a powerful force for change over most of this century. Jonathan tells the story of that Alliance and how it fell apart.
As a journalist Jonathan tells this unique story from the perspective of important individuals on both sides. He traces them and their changing perspectives through these significant historical changes. It is this personal perspective that makes Jonathan's stories so compelling.
