Book Description
Twenty-one-year-old Rune is an aspiring filmmaker, but so far her only break has been scoring a job as an underpaid production assistant in Manhattan. Still, she's always on the lookout for the perfect topic for her own film--and she thinks she's found it when she witnesses the bombing of a triple-X movie theater in Times Square. Rune's got a great hook for her documentary: She plans to film it through the eyes of Shelly Lowe, the porn star whose movie was playing at the theater when it exploded. But just hours after Rune films a poignant Shelly reflecting on her dreams of becoming a serious actress, a second bomb silences the beautiful film star forever. Was Shelly in the wrong place at the wrong time--or was she the bomber's target all along? Rune vows to find out the truth behind the death of this blue movie star. But as she struggles to finish shooting her film, Rune's labor of love may be her final masterpiece--as a shooting of a more lethal kind threatens to write an ending to this story that no one wants to see....

Wonderful series, wonderful heroine!.......2007-09-17
Rune is a young woman who wants to be a film-maker. Although she doesn't have any formal education, she has managed to pick up bits and pieces from various jobs she has held, including her current one for an agency that does advertising and independent films. One day, on the way to work, she witnesses the bombing of an adult movie theatre - the professed work of a right-wing Fundamentalist group calling themselves the Sword of Jesus - and the idea of creating a film around the event captures her interest. She tracks down an actress who was in one of the films playing in the theatre that day - Shelly Lowe - and convinces her to give some interviews. However, shortly after beginning the project, a second bombing kills Shelly Lowe, so Rune must change her focus - she begins to interview Shelly's friends instead, deciding to focus the film on the life and death of this actress, while at the same time trying to solve the mystery of who exactly are responsible for the bombings. Rune develops a relationship with Sam Healy, a member of the bomb squad, who at first tries to keep her away from the scene and then later just tries to minimize the damage.
There are plenty of twists to this one - worthy of Jeffrey Deaver! He never lets us down, that's for sure! Don't miss this one!
Explosive Action.......2006-01-17
Deaver does a good job here of pulling off a surprise ending that I doubt you will see coming. I found the protagonist, a young female film maker named Rune, an engaging and interesting character, and her relationship with the bomb squad officer was an important aspect of the book for me, but the other characters, with the possible exception of Nicole, one of the porn actresses, were, as far as I was concerned, only there for the plot. The book was a good read for me, and I enjoyed the plot twists.
Rune Is Back!.......2005-06-10
My favorite Deaver character, Rune, returns in DEATH OF A BLUE MOVIE STAR and continues to entertain her reading audience. What's not to love about this street-savvy young woman who definitely marches to the beat of her own drummer? She lives up to her own expectations and doesn't care what others think about her - she has her goals and that's her only focus.
Rune is trying to get a break in the film industry and she uses the bombing of a Times Square porn theater as her catalyst. Utilizing this bombing as background information, she begins a documentary on the porn industry. With luck on her side, and a persistence that is similar to a bulldog, Rune gets an interview with top porn star, Shelly Lowe. Needing to wrap up the interview sequence, Rune meets Shelly at her office. As she waits outside, she glances up as Shelly waves and tells her she'll be right down after she's off the phone. In the next minute, Shelly's building is devastated by a bomb instantly killing her which thrusts Rune on another case trying to figure out who is responsible for Shelly's death.
Deaver introduces us to another quirky character in Sam Healy, a bomb squad detective. He seems to pop up and save Rune every time she gets into hot water. Yes, Rune is great at getting into trouble - she is going to solve this crime no matter what measures she has to take, including breaking into offices, buying false IDs, etc. Sam is soon involved with Rune and the two compliment each other and battle each other. It makes for an interesting side plot and having this team solve the case brings a new, fun, dimension to story.
DEATH OF A BLUE MOVIE STAR focuses on pornography and the seedy side of filmmaking. Most of the main plot is believable, but some is far-fetched. The way Deaver describes Shelly Long as a "gifted actress" is just a bit much. If she were truly a gifted actress, she'd be making a fortune in the legitimate film industry, not wasting away as a porn star. Other aspects are more believable.
I enjoyed this novel; it was a fast read and kept me entertained the entire time. However, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first Rune epic, MANHATTAN IS MY BEAT. I'm hoping this 21-year-old will continue her journeys and when Deaver takes a break from Lincoln Rhyme, he'll give us a glimpse into Rune's current world.
Hooked by Rune.......2002-03-23
This is the second Rune novel. I was quite impressed with the first one, but this second one literally blew me away!
Rune is an absolutely great character. She is likeable, amusing, and great company. Deaver's writing is puncy, to the point, and exciting. I found myself turning the pages rapidly.
the plot is really good, as always with a Deaver novel. there is also some emotion packed in with it. There is excitement, tension, intrigue...all the things you need to make a good thriller. these Rune books are really easy, they're light, too, but not over simple. I find them even more pageturners than his normal stuff. i don't know why...i just really cant wait to find out whats going to happen and why. the characters are compelling and the plot great.
i really cannot describe what i like so much about this series, but i absolutely love it! It is a breath of fresh air, and i am really sad that there is only one book left. i really hope Deaver writes another Rune book sometimes, because this really is a great series.
With "Death os A Blue Movie Star" he creates his usual complex plot, and packs it with stuff. it's fast paced, and fairly races along to what is an absolutely stunning climax, in true Deaver style. As always, there are several twists throughout the book, and its great fun trying to guess what they'll be...and i was not right once!
Deaver is the best thriller/suspense writer out there. I love his books to pieces.
An average sequel.......2001-08-31
The main character Rune does not continue her unique development and insight to the world, as she did in Manhattan is My Beat. And while it does deal with an interesting story of those that are sometimes forgotten by a society who considers some less than worthwhile, it never really gets enough steam to say that they shouldn't be forgotten. On the other hand, it does get into the personality quirks of several people, including those that society would deem worthwhile, but have secrets the world doesn't know.
Reading this story will be ok, but don't expect the same level of enjoyment as from Manhattan is My Beat.

Where is the finally?.......2004-09-23
I bought Harzard's Price and really enjoyed the book, until I came to the end to find it continued on in another book. Bought Dark Waters, to also find no real ending to the story. I am so disapointed to find no others books to contiune the chronicles to the conclusion of the storyline.
bravo!.......2003-02-03
this book along with the second in the series, was sitting on my shelf for nearly a year when i took it with me on a recent trip out of the country. i finished both in record time and was unavailable for two of my seven days on my vacation (to my wife's chagrin).i found it a wonderfully easy read spurred on by interesting, complex characters. in a crowded fantasy genre, i believe a refreshing new voice has arrived with mr. stone's first book and i look forward to a long career with more of the same. when is the third book coming?
Fantasy at it's Best.......2001-11-18
Mr. Stone, a first time author I believe, weaves an immensely thick plot in just a few hundred pages. Character development is superb for those who are kept around for book two (I know as I have now read book two); others are swiftly dealt with in an aggressive style that only Stone could conceive of. His writing style is mature, his plots are rich and thick, and his imagination toward death and dismemberment at times is alarming. Who is Mr. Stone and what has he been through? What kind of person am I for enjoying this sort of thing? (I enjoyed the character development of Hannibal Lechter too, so this sort of thing does not come as a suprise to those who know me.) Hazard's Price is a must read for those wanting more out of the genre. Mr. Stone is finally here to serve it up. I enjoyed Hazard's Price but I even think more highly of it after reading Dark Waters. (Dark Waters deserves 6 stars!) Hazard's Price serves an elaborate set-up so that the action can really kick into gear in Dark Waters. Fasten your seat belts because this series is awesome!
Flawed, but promising.......2001-11-01
My impression, on finishing Hazard's Price, is that it was a first book by an author who is going to be really good once he properly hits his stride. The situation he sets up is complex, the characters are varied and two-dimensional. However, there were (for me) too many main characters who had minimal time devoted to showing them, so it was difficult to distinguish who they were and why they were doing things. The head of the Ministry of Intelligence could have been more intelligent, the Complex Backstory behind the friendship of Hazard and his companion is synopsized a couple of times and portrayed as Highly Significant, but it always comes up in bullet list form and I could never care about it properly.
I've read far worse first books, with far less ambitious goals, and I do look forward to seeing the rest of the series.
Great Read!.......2001-09-02
It's refreshing to read a SF&F book that is written above an 8th grade level. A very interesting story with action, adventure and magic - but the magic is not overused as a device as commonly seen in this genre. Much more of a "cliffhanger" at the end than I would have expected; I hope the next book in the series comes out soon!! Good character development and some interesting opportunities for future series related to this one (the Khrine for instance).

A more in depth bible study........2007-02-18
Choosing Thankfulness is the 10th First Place Bible study I have completed in the last several years. It requires more time, effort, and thought than any of the others I have done. The writer also uses language that suggests you have had success with the program and reached your goal weight. This bible study is not for someone who is just beginning weight loss. I also did not care for the DVD. The music was not loud enough for me to learn the verses and I am not coordinated enough to learn the moves to exercise to it.
Choosing thankfulness.......2006-11-10
It is a great bible study. I did not particularly like the dvd in thae back instead of the usual cd for listening. With a cd you can listen to it anywhere you go, but with a dvd you have to be in a stationary place.
I have 10/12 people in my class and I have talk with most and none like the dvd.
A definitive collection of healthy and effective strategies for weight-loss and fit body workouts.......2006-05-06
Choosing Thankfulness: A Comprehensive Biblical Study On Thankfulness by the biblical based organization First Place as an addition to the "Bible Study Series" as a productive, "reader friendly" guide for daily Bible study. Including ten weekly studies with a day by day preparation process, Choosing Thankfulness knowledgeably presents motivational spiritual practices for with Scripture memory verses, Wellness Worksheets, personal Commitment Records, two weeks of Menu Plans, a Leader's Discussion Guide, as well as an accompanying "Moving To The Word" aerobic exercise DVD for personal fitness. Choosing Thankfulness is very highly recommended reading, especially for those Christian readers with out-of-control eating habits who are searching for God's promise and unfailing love an in need of a definitive collection of healthy and effective strategies for weight-loss and fit body workouts.
Reviewing the workout DVD "Moving to the Word" included in this book.......2006-03-21
I recently bought this Bible study and haven't done it yet, but I wanted to post a review of the workout DVD that's included in the book. It's called "Moving to the Word", and it's presented by Body and Soul ministries in conjunction with First Place. The workout is 30 minutes and is predominantly cardio work. If you're a veteran of workout videos, this one may seem to be quite simplistic to you. The set dressings and routine are very simple, the leader's moves are a bit robotic and the sound isn't great, but there are some good things about it. Because if its simplicity, there's no extra equipment required. This would be great for anyone-- like someone who's new to working out, or an experienced person who just needs a simple routine, possibly even to take on the road with them. There are 3 castmembers on screen, each doing a different level of difficulty. This is great to tailor the workout to your level. I was able to get a great sweat going by choosing the level that was right for me. The soundtrack is comprised of memory verses that members learn in the First Place classes. This not only broke up the routine nicely into short segments, but it also was great to recite powerful scripture during the workout. When I am weak, HE is strong! One of the neat features of the DVD is a track where the leader Jeannie Blocher takes you through all of the different steps to help you learn them. While an experienced person might see these moves as elementary, this track is wonderful to have for the novice participant. I wish more DVDs had this track available! Kudos to First Place for producing yet another tool to help their participants see success!
Wonderful Bible Study.......2006-02-25
I have to say this is one of my favorite First Place Bible Studies.
Healthy Boundries is another.
Enjoy!

excellent variety & cooking levels!!.......2005-07-01
I have to say that I was on the "testing and planning" committee for this cookbook and I can't be happier reading everyone's reviews. Over 600 recipes were triple-tested in order to get the ones for this volume. I have used it over and over for gatherings and meals for my family. I'm always pleased with each recipe. It has something for everyone and the history about Cincinnati is wonderful. It makes a great gift for someone!!
My Favorite.......2004-12-16
I love this cookbook. It is one of my favorites - I've never been disappointed with any recipe I have tried. The design is aesthetically pleasing, the facts about Cincinnati are interesting (and I lived there for four years), and the Teller's House Salad can't be beat. I've bought this cookbook at least five times for friends and family and will continue to do so. My only complaint ... where is volume 2?? :-)
i'll cook when pigs fly..........2003-01-30
this cookbook has a wonderful variety of great, elegant, and easy recipes for casual entertaining with friends and families. i happen to love cookbooks, and this is a wonderful addition to my collection.
One of the Best.......2001-07-18
As a collector of cookbooks (more than 600 titles) with an emphasis on the "Junior League" books, this is one of my all-time favorites. I have tried many, many recipes and they are all great. I found lots of "different" recipes that were simple to make and tasted great. Definitely add this one to your collection.
The BEST cookbook ever........2001-01-03
The cookbook has never failed me. I have given it to several people as a gift and they also raved about it. Has both simple and complex recipes. Also need tidbits about Cincinnati in the margins.

Gunnar Myrdal belongs in a category with Alexis de Tocqueville and J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur--non-American authors who have written essential works on the American character. In 1954, the Swedish-born Myrdal delivered this massive (and massively influential) book on the status of American blacks. It is a somewhat depressing account of segregation and lynch law, but it is also full of optimism. Myrdal's hopefulness appears to have been justified. Black Americans still face many problems, but their place in American life has much improved, thanks to a near-complete revolution in racial attitudes among whites and a highly successful civil rights movement. If we learn about the present by reading about the past, then An American Dilemma has much to teach us today, especially about how far the United States has come.
Customer Reviews:
Monumental - but not without flaws.......2000-10-20
The importance of this book cannot be overstated - it is still the most exhaustive effort to date to document every aspect of the black American condition, from medical history to birth rates to the black church and social clubs. Myrdal systematically shreds the institutions of segregation and racial indocrination. As for providing groundwork for changing these systems, however, he falls short. Myrdal is too vague in his theories of white morality and causation of black poverty and never draws solid conclusions. There is also no mention of actual contact or conversation with any black people - Myrdal fails to see blacks as much more than a palimpsest of the white experience. I think he would have done better to push the white psyche aside and interact more with the focus of his study. Ralph Ellison noted, "Can a people live and develop over three hundred years simply by _reacting_? Are American Negroes simply the creation of white men, or have they at least helped to create themselves out of what they found around them?"
Thoughtful and Thought-Provoking.......2000-10-12
Writing against the backdrop of WWII, Myrdal confronted the contradiction between the US belief "All men are created equal" and the reality that African-Americans earned less for the same work as whites, lived in atrocious conditions, died at an earlier age. He argues that if Americans had believed that God made some poor, others rich, this contradiction could have been acceptable. But because Americans believed "all men are equal," the fact that African-Americans were manifestly living in worse conditions lead US society to seek a justification in the doctrine of racial inferiority. This book grasped the contradiction in US society, and foresaw that change was imminent, but Myrdal did not see that it was those under-educated and overworked African-American men and women themselves who would form the backbone of Civil Rights Movement. He expected that the white elites in power would have to change in order for the situation of African-Americans to improve. One reason this book is relevant today is Myrdal's theory of cumulative causation, which suggests that government intervention will be necessary to reverse the tendency of white race prejudice to maintain a low standard of living for African-Americans. In days where economic theories attacking the logic of affirmative action are widespread, here is an eloquent statement of the logic behind the original ideas for affirmative action.
Myrdal's Analysis Too Important to be Ignored.......1998-11-05
During the long course of our studies of social trends that undermine our collective humanity, we have frequently come across significant research studies that provide critical keys to our understanding. Such is the case with AN AMERICAN DILEMMA: THE NEGRO PROBLEM AND MODERN DEMOCRACY. The Swedish researcher Gunnar Myrdal, under a grant sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation, produced this landmark study which was published in 1944 by Harper and Row publishers. Some fifty years after its publication AN AMERICAN DILEMMA still stands as perhaps the most comprehensive, and unsettling, analysis of America's relationship with its African members. At nearly 1500 pages, including footnotes and index, Myrdal's study is awesomely comprehensive. Disturbing revelation follows revelation as the scientist, trained in economics, explores every imaginable aspect of Negro life and at various times even proposes methods by which America might eventually relieve itself of its longstanding "problem." From the beginning of this country's history, at the heart of America's ethnic crisis lies the very real potential of sustained and systematic planning to manage Blacks as a material resource as opposed to human beings in all their potential. I will take this thought further to state that Myrdal's study stands as a virtual blueprint for a contemporary campaign to undermine the aspirations of the Black citizenry. The ultimate form of this repression can only be described as systematic genocide--by every definition of the word. By Myrdal's own words, his study is quite thorough, encompassing not only every aspect of Negro life but examining the varied attitudes of the dominant white majority.
