1 out of 5 stars Not for scuba divers.......2007-09-16

I got excited reading the description of this book, expecting not only a good mystery, but some interesting dive scenes. I plodded through the story but from the very beginning it was apparent that Ms. Alam is not a diver and apparently thought only people who know nothing about scuba diving or cave diving would read her book. This diver won't waste his money on any more as her lack of knowledge of even fundamental equipment and terminology is a turnoff to me. Don't waste your time if you want a story that is scuba oriented. By the way Ms. Alam, even a new dive student half way through certification knows to call them FINS, not flippers.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you there.......2006-04-03

I was sweating and swatting bugs, the author brings this setting to life. Great new series, love the protag and the story, I fully intend to read more from this author. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing and Authentic.......2005-09-28

A child of Florida, I was drawn to this book for its setting and the presence of scuba diving. I was hooked from the first, intrigued by the characters, human, reptile and the swamp itself, as much as by the mystery. I'm embarrassed to say that I was almost two thirds through the first chapter before I realized that it was written in first person, something I tend to avoid as few writers can pull it off well. Alam has jumped to my must-buy list and I'm on my way to get the second in the series right now. If you love well rounded characterization as well as a engrossing story, buy this book. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Award-Deserving Debut.......2001-08-01

As a mystery writer with my first novel in its initial release, I am quite impressed by Glynn Marsh Alam's DIVE DEEP AND DEADLY. Set primarily in a Florida swamp, this debut mystery features some of the finest first-book writing that I have read in years. As Luanne Fogarty attempts to rebuild the family home, the vivid descriptions allow the reader to literally feel the swamp. As Luanne's project continues, complications arise. The plot twists and turns. The characters are well-drawn. DIVE DEEP AND DEADLY has recently been nominated for a Barry Award. It is most deserving of this award.

5 out of 5 stars Hold Your Breath.......2001-06-21

Luanne Fogarty is enjoying her time off from teaching by rebuilding her family home deep in the swamps of Florida when her occasional job diving for the police gets her involved in a mystery. She finds a body tied to an underwater cave, but the next morning, it's gone. Exploring a second cave, she finds a second body. Is there a connection? And if so, what is it? And who is the unidentified first woman and where is her body?

This is a wonderful debut book. The plot develops nicely, and the characters are interesting as well. The real star here is the setting. Ms. Alam is able to bring the swamp to life using all five senses in a way that places you right there without overshadowing the characters or story. I was completely drawn into this world, enjoying every minute of it.

I highly recommend this entertaining mystery and am looking forward to the second book in this series.

Book Description

The story of Moses, that is to say, the traditional story, is familiar in that it covers his birth in the bull rushes and his upbringing in the court of Egypt which afforded him a place of power from which he could set the Israelites free. Because of her insight or "far memory" and knowledge of ancient Egypt, Joan Grant holds that Moses must have inherited some of his traditional greatness in a more direct way. Thus, in this recreation of the events leading up to the birth of Moses, she tells the life story of Ramoses II whom she believes to have been his father. Out of this brilliant novel arises a totally believable and human image of Ramoses who, as a young boy, was confronted with the enormous burden of ruling over Two Lands. Forced more and more to hide behind the cloak of royalty, he struggles with the conflicts of his wives, his fear of war, the barely audible demand of the Jews in Egypt, and the competitive power of the priests of Amen. His hope lies, he believes, in fathering a Winged Pharaoh, a priest king who will unite the divisive forces in his kingdom. When he finds a woman who loves him apart from his royal position, the auguries bode the divinity of his son, and Moses is born. Once again, Joan Grant captures the overall majesty and grandeur as well as the important details of life in ancient Egypt to paint an unforgettable picture of events crucial to our lives today. "Endlessly fascinating and absorbing," reported Time and Tide. "It has a diary-like quality, the verisimilitude of biography, but biography that takes as it were a double view."

5 out of 5 stars historical fiction - Egyptian view of the birth of Moses.......1999-09-25

Whether historical fiction, or the biography of a previous life (as claimed by the author), this book is well written. It describes the life of Pharoh and the politics of the Egyptian Court just prior to the birth of Moses. This is an entirely different account of Moses' birth than the one we are accustomed to reading. It is most entertaining and quite believable. I enjoyed the book very much.

        Book Description

Attempting to demythologize the process of dying, Nuland explores how we shall die, each of us in a way that will be unique. Through particular stories of dying--of patients, and of his own family--he examines the seven most common roads to death: old age, cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's, accidents, heart disease, and strokes, revealing the facets of death's multiplicity.

"It's impossible to read How We Die without realizing how earnestly we have avoided this most unavoidable of subjects, how we have protected ourselves by building a cultural wall of myths and lies. I don't know of any writer or scientist who has shown us the face of death as clearly, honestly and compassionately as Sherwin Nuland does here."--James Gleick

5 out of 5 stars On my second reading!.......2007-07-10

Anyone interested in physiology will love this book. Easy to read, fascinating for the lay person as well as any premed student! I've got an 88 yr. old mother and this book explained so much!

5 out of 5 stars How We Live.......2007-05-24

Nuland's "How We Die" is, ostensibly, about death and the means by which the great majority of us will take our exit; toward this end, Nuland excels. Nuland also manages, however, to subtly position death's predecessor -- life -- front and center by concluding that "The dignity that we seek in dying must be found in the dignity with which we have lived our lives. Ars moriendi is ars vivendi. The art of dying is the art of living...It is not in the last weeks or days that we compose the message that will be remembered, but in all the decades that preceded them. Who has lived in dignity, dies in dignity." Nuland is a talented writer and he delivers a work that is nothing short of honest, accessible, and insightful. Highly recommended for those preoccupied with life...and death.

4 out of 5 stars More than merely informative.......2007-05-07

Dr. Nuland explains the dying process in detail, without sugar coating or sentimentality, in a way that is understandable to the general reader. More importantly, he shares his reflections on this process as a human being and as a doctor. The reader comes away from the book with information and wisdom not easily gained through other means. As someone loooking to revise his living will, I found the book immensely helpful. I should add that I was particularly impressed by Dr. Nuland's humility and his avoidance of all preaching. In so doing he credits his reader with intelligence and challenges him or her to think deeply.

5 out of 5 stars A Harsh Subject Put Forth Somewhat Gently.......2007-03-23

This book will put to rest any idea of a 'good death.' It gives all the details, in a non-gory fashion, of all the major causes of death in this day and age. Mr. Nuland is an eloquent man and easy to read, even for us laypersons. The technical aspects are explained in a way that anyone can understand. Give this book to someone who doesn't take care of themselves, or thinks they're still immortal. I read this book with its description of death by heart disease and decided to finally quit smoking. It took three months, but I've been smoke free for 2 weeks and strong. I'm not saying that this book will cure you of any ills you have, but it may make you think about how you treat your body and how little time we really have.

5 out of 5 stars How We Die.......2007-02-07

Not an easy red for the squeamish, but a palatable review of the inevitable presented in a straightforward, mature, and responsible manner.

        5 out of 5 stars Life's final indignity.......2004-11-24

A motto on the walls of hundreds of autopsy rooms all over the world can be translated as: "This is the place where death rejoices to come to the aid of life."

"How We Die" is a book where death rejoices to come to the aid of life. Distinguished surgeon Sherwin B. Nuland estimates that only one in five deaths is peaceful, or at least quick. The rest of us are doomed to prolonged suffering before we shuffle off of this mortal coil. However, if we know what our end is going to be like, if the mystery of say, death by cancer is explained to us, we might at least lose our fear of the unknown.

The first time I read this book, I didn't derive any comfort at all from knowing exactly how I might die. But now that I've been through the shadow of cancer, I reread "How We Die" and it didn't frighten me any longer. Dr. Nuland is right. It is better to know, especially since you may need to decide whether you want to be kept alive for as long as possible, no matter what the price in pain, indignity, and loss of function. The author serves as our Virgil, leading us down through the dread circles of terminal disease and accidental death in a graphic, unsentimental fashion. The only time he loses his cool is during his description of young men and women dying of AIDS. "What dignity or meaning can be snatched from such a death will never be known, except by those whose lives have embraced the life just lost."

The worst manner of death, no matter what the cause, seems to be at the hands of physicians who are willing to inflict the most drastic surgeries, chemotherapies, dialysis, and all manner of 21st century medical procedures on patients who have only a short time left to live, or who do not understand the risks and pain of the procedures that are being pressed upon them. Dr. Nuland was guilty of this type of major medical intervention on two patients who were dying, one of them his own brother. "I might have understood that my way of giving Harvey [his brother] the hope he asked for was not only a deception but, given what we knew about the toxicity of the experimental drugs, an almost certain source of added anguish for all of us."

The lessons that Dr. Nuland would like us to learn from "How We Die:"
        * Your doctors are likely to want to prolong your life, no matter what the cost. It is up to you to decide whether the cost is worth the few weeks or months of prolonged life. What will your quality of that life be? For example, are you willing to accept a feeding tube, but not a ventilator?
        * Fill out that advanced directive to either prohibit or encourage major resuscitative efforts, in case you reach a point where you are no longer able to speak for yourself. I had to answer this question for my mother on her last trip to the emergency room, because she had refused to think about what her end might be like.
        * "The greatest dignity to be found in death is the dignity of the life that preceded it." The end itself is likely to be undignified, painful, and a source of anguish to our loved ones.

I have searched many places and can not find this book. It seens, who ever owns it now, will never give it up! Can't blame them, for as much as I have searched for this book. I wouldn't either.

I have had this book almost from the time it came out. It tells you how to see confirmation flaws, what they are, and how they can affect your horse. It gives common illnesses, what they are, how they are caused, symptoms, treatment, and sometimes long term care for the particular problem. It explains in great detail the structure of the foot, general guidelines on feeding, and most of the things that new or old horse people either need to know, or need to remember. An outstanding choice. I know that this book is sometimes offered through mail order tack catologs such as Jeffers or Stateline. I would never give mine up!

                            Book Description

Childhood. Think about the meaning of this word for us today as we near the end of the 20th century: a time to grow, a time to play, a time to learn, an idyllic time. Did the notion of childhood elicit the same thoughts for people in 18th- and 19th-century America? Indeed, was there even such a concept as "childhood" then, or is it instead a 20th-century invention that we have come to take for granted?

These are difficult questions, in part because there never has been one universal understanding of childhood. How earlier generations viewed life's first stage depended on such factors as where they lived, their occupations, and their legal status as free, indentured, or enslaved Americans. One's experience and memories of childhood would have differed widely. A child working on the family farm in New England, the daughter of wealthy Philadelphians attending needlework school, or an enslaved African girl serving as a house maid in Virginia--all surely experienced childhood very differently.

KIDS! explores the many ways in which adults shaped the world of children in America between 1700 and 1900. It looks closely at the furniture, the books, the clothing, the toys, and the games used by and created for children, and it tells stories about growing up in early America. Above all, it invites readers to learn through history. Using objects and the stories that surround them, KIDS! puts us in touch with the past and, in so doing, moves us closer to understanding the present.

                                          Book Description

Until the publication of this volume, Santana, among the most brilliant of all Apache chiefs, has been virtually unknown in recorded history. Known in his early years as the most cunning and vicious of the Mescalero leaders waging war against the Anglo invaders, it is ironic that Santana's most notable contribution related to making peace rather than war. Anonymity is often the fate of peacemakers. Santana understood in the 1860s, earlier than most of his contemporaries, that the probable ultimate result of continued struggle with the white man was the annihilation of his people. Recognizing that he would be among the first to die as punishment for his warlike behavior, he disappeared into the mountains for 8 years, until the heat was off and the Army's attention was focused on a new generation of war chiefs. After his reappearance, he led his followers into peace to prevent their annihilation as a people and negotiated for them a reservation in their traditional homeland in the Sacramento mountains of south-central New Mexico.

Santana needed a friend from whom he could learn about the ways of the white world and who would intercede for him with the alien culture. He found that friend in J. H. Blazer, who operated a mill, La Manquina, later to become known as Blazer's Mill, on the Rio Tularoso at a site one-half mile downstream from the present-day Mescalero Agency. After their tension-fraught initial meeting in late 1867 or early 1868, the two men learned to like and respect one another and developed an abiding friendship that lasted until Santana's death from pneumonia in the winter of 1877. The manuscript itself contains both accounts of J.H. Blazer's interactions with Santana and descriptions of certain aspects of Mescalero life and culture supplied from the experience of the author, A.N. Blazer, son of J.H., and from stories told him by his Mescalero acquaintances, some of whom were contemporaries of Santana.

This is not an academic history. Any reader expecting such an account will be disappointed. Many of the events and conversations related herein cannot be verified because they come from the memories of people who had no written language (and who, it should be noted, had far better memories as a result). What is presented here is a very cogent account, verifiable in many important particulars, of a remarkable man and certain aspects of the Mescalero culture which spawned and shaped him.

Santana was a remarkable man for any age or time. Recognizing his own limitations in dealing with an Anglo juggernaut bent on overwhelming and destroying his culture and his people, he was able to step outside his cultural heritage of war and conquest and use his exceptional skills as a tactician, negotiator and leader to find a way to preserve both with a minimum of bloodshed. In this age of increasingly violent cultural and religious conflicts in many parts of the world, surely his story deserves substantial recognition.
