"Deborah Crombie might be the most British of American mystery novelists," said an astute reviewer in reference to Mourn Not Your Dead, the fourth book in her excellent series about Duncan Kincaid, an inoffensively upper-class Scotland Yard superintendent, and Sergeant Gemma James, his rougher-edged partner and lover. In addition to her finely tuned ear for the subtler nuances of Britspeak, Crombie--a resident of Richardson, Texas--achieves a rare and therefore enviable balance between the details of her characters' private lives and the plot of each particular book. That delicate balance is especially welcome in Dreaming of the Bones, when Kincaid's former wife, Dr. Victoria McClellan, threatens his personal and professional equanimity. A Cambridge don, Vic has been writing a biography of poet Lydia Brooke, who claimed kinship to the distinguished World War I bard Rupert Brooke, and whose suicide five years before is now beginning to appear suspiciously like murder.

Book Description

After twelve years, the last person Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid expects to hear from is his ex-wife Victoria.  But this is no social call.  In her biographical research on troubled poet Lydia Brooke, Vic's uncovered reasons to believe Lydia's death five years ago was not suicide.

Much to Kincaid's surprise--and the unease of his partner and lover, Sergeant Gemma James--he finds he can't refuse Vic's request to look into the long-closed case.  The police report raises questions, but not enough to reopen the investigation--until a second death occurs, this one clearly murder.

Now Duncan and Gemma must sift through a tangle of relationships, secrets, and lies to find not just a killer, but a secret which will change their own lives forever.

3 out of 5 stars A bit uncredible........2007-05-21

After reading Leave the Grave Green as an audiobook and enjoying it thoroughly, I was tempted to read more Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James mysteries. I picked out Dreaming of the Bones. While Deborah Crombie is a skillful writer, and there were many things in the story I enjoyed, there were a number of plot elements that I found uncredible that detracted from this sequel. I did not find a credible motive for the main murder nor the accidental murder years earlier that started the chain of deceit. It just didn't work for me that the whole group of kids would have hidden a foolish crime or an accident the way they did. To have a successful mystery you have to have a believable premise that delivers at the end, and this one didn't.

4 out of 5 stars A powerful tale of love and loss.......2006-02-28

Reading this book was an emotionally draining experience-the kind that always comes after reading a thrilling literary novel. Many of the characters in this book feel loss in one sense or another, but it's the way Crombie conveys this that make the book so potent. With magnificent characters and startling plot twists, this elaborate whodunit keeps you guessing up until the end. Even though I was disappointed by the identity of the killer, the book was still worth it. Superintendent Duncan Kincaid gets an unexpected call from his ex-wife, who is writing a biography of ill-fated poet. Asked to look into the poet's suicide, Duncan finds some inconsistencies but the police refuse to reopen the case. Suddenly his ex-wife is murdered; poisoned just like the poet. Now Duncan and his partner and lover, Sergeant Gemma James, must find out who murdered the poet in order to expose his ex-wife's killer.

5 out of 5 stars Got to Love It.......2005-10-15

I love Deborah Crombie's work and this is one of her best.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping story.......2005-08-22

I have recently found this series and find it quite a joy to read. What keeps me coming back is the way Ms. Crombie develops the relationship between Kincaid and James. Their relationship is not free of stumbling blocks and this adds to the realism of the story. This novel, in particular, does a wonderful job of introducing the reader to Kincaid's ex-wife, Vic. The mystery which evolves is compelling in its own right, but what I enjoyed the most was the way Kincaid and James are changed by the outcome. A quick read.

4 out of 5 stars Not up there with Elizabeth George..........2005-05-24

I read this book after hearing comparisons to Elizabeth George and that it had won an Edgar Award. I was somewhat disappointed. I didn't think the plot was very engaging (I had no trouble putting the book down) and I never really developed an affinity for the main characters Kincaid and Gemma. I never felt the book read as a true Enlish mystery. It felt more like the author had plugged in some British slang, some facts from a Cambridge travel guide, and had the characters drinking tea every other page. There was no shortage of possible culprits and the ending was a surprise. Maybe going into it expecting it to be as good as an Elizabeth George ruined it for me.

          Book Description

The second and last of a series of four adaptations from the Japanese Noh theater, "The Dreaming of the Bones" and "Calvary" were paired in their first printing together in Four Plays for Dancers. In writing these one-act plays, Yeats worked through for himself the psychology of betrayal and its consequences for humanity. This book reproduces the complete set of extant manuscripts that preceded publication of both plays. In addition to a perceptive introductory essay, the book includes several appendixes of Yeats's notes and commentaries on the plays from their preparation in 1921 onward.

Well, I do NOT play the rpgs, sorry so I can't tell you how this relates to that, but from an outsider's pov this was an interesting foray into another magical world. I don't think one should read this by it's self, rather read this in one sitting with the other two books.

            3 out of 5 stars Mildly disappointing........2000-06-23

The first book of the trilogy of which this book is the second, "The Toybox", did a very good job of being a self-contained story, rather than obviously the first third of a trilogy. So I had hopes that this book would not suffer from "middle-book-itis", as so many second books (or movies) do. Even Tolkein failed in this regard; none of the books of his trilogy can stand alone. In the "Star Wars" movie trilogy (not counting the most recent prequel) the second movie, "The Empire Strikes Back" suffers from this fault. And this book, too, cannot stand on its own.

Still, while it refers back to the events of the first book quite a bit, and doesn't really have a satisfying ending of its own, it does do a better job of at least ending at a reasonably plausible break-point than many middle books of trilogies do, and the writing is still enjoyable (if not quite as much so as in the first book) and the characters are as compelling as ever. Obviously, if you've read the first book and enjoyed it, you should continue with this one. But be forewarned; you won't find an ending here; one could plausibly have read just the first book, stopped there, and not felt cheated. One cannot do that with this book; it will be necessary to continue to the third book of the series.

4 out of 5 stars Hawaii and Menehune.......2001-02-03

for Changeling: the Dreaming. The 2nd in the Immortal Eyes trilogy (preceded by The Toybox, followed by Court of All Kings), Shadows on the Hill covers the chimerical Hawaii setting, and includes the story material for the second part of the Immortal Eyes chronicle. it also introduces the Menehune, the islands' native fae.

the biggest problem with this book is that it spends too many pages detailing characters, pages that could have been better spent giving more detail to the various Menehune Callings (the four divisions of the Hawaiian fae) and their culture. the focus of the book is on the European Kith, and treats the native fae as a sidenote.

the setting material is good, and open-ended enough to set Chronicles in Hawaii entirely for many years, though a good bibliography would have help fill in the holes.

5 out of 5 stars Colourful book on national anthem brings history to life.......2005-02-17

This year, 2005, marks the 125th birthday of our national anthem. What most people don't know is that it started out as a French-only song written to celebrate a holiday in Quebec, long, long ago, and grew slowly, like our nation. This book tells the story of that long journey.

Picture a palacial ballroom in Quebec City on the night of St. Jean Baptiste day, June 24, 1880. Five hundred guests are on hand for a banquet -- the crowning event of an international celebration of the French in North America. The Governor-General is here, along with Quebec's Lieutenant-Governor and the Honourable Wilfrid Laurier, plus senators, judges, mayors and delegates from across Canada and New England. They sit at six long tables laden with delicacies: salmon, turkey, capon, roast beef and lobster salad. For dessert are ices, creams and pies of strawberry, peach, raspberry, rhubarb and plum. What a party! All that's needed is a song. And the organizers have just the thing: a tune freshly-penned by one of Quebec's most renouned composers: Calixa Lavallée.

Lavallée hailed from St.-Hyacinthe, Que., and his resumé shows that nothing ever changes: He had to go south to succeed. Lavallée enlisted as a musician in the Union army in the U.S. Civil War, emerging wounded and honourably discharged. He then found fame writing operas in New York, Boston, Paris and London. Returning to Quebec in 1880, Lavallée found his compatriots buzzing with plans for celebration. The habitants had heeded the Catholic Church's plea to make babies, and the French felt powerful and proud. Party planners asked Lavallée for some music. The words came from another son of Quebec, Mr. Justice Adolphe-Basile Routhier.

After the meal at the Quebec City banquet hall, the band of 100 trumpets struck up, accompanied by a choir. "Electrified by an unstoppable impulse," reported those who were there, the crowd stood and heard for the first time the brand-new song, whose words existed only in French: "O Canada." Over the next 20 years, the song became a hit in Quebec, sung in churches and on all formal occasions; 2,000 schoolchildren sang it to the Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George V), when he visited Quebec in 1901. Then the tune spread east and west -- but with no English words.

People across Canada began to compose their own English lyrics, and by the 1920s, English Canadians sang 200 different versions. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, seeking an official English O Canada for the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation in 1927, asked his chief archivist to write Canadian Clubs from coast to coast, asking for "a copy of the text used by your club." The replies, as preserved at the National Library, show that Stratford sang, "O Canada! Beloved country thou; Hope's holy wreath adorning thy young brow," while Toronto sang, "Lord of the lands! Beneath thy bending skies; On field and flood, where'er our banner flies."

Amid this confusion, one version stood out, written in 1908 by yet another son of Quebec, Montreal judge Robert Stanley Weir. Rather than translate the French, Judge Weir captured the spirit: "O Canada! Our home and native land." The federal government chose to publish Weir's song for the 1927 festivities, and it is the song we sing, with minor modifications, today.

The song spread in World War II and by the 1960s won its place as the country's national song. But it was still not official. Finally, in the wake of the 1980 sovereignty referendum, the House of Commons showed a rare common purpose, and on June 27, 1980 voted unanimously to pass the National Anthem Act. Exactly 100 years after its birth, O Canada finally became the nation's official anthem.

Sumptuously illustrated with full-colour collages and photographs, this book is a must-read for every child who belts out O Canada at school in the morning, and wants to know more about where it came from.

Although this book has an excellent presentation the recipes are not appealing at all, particularly if you are only making dinner for one. There is only one chapter in the book dedicated to this ("The Lone Ranger") with very unappealing dishes. It seems that most of the "better" recipes are geared toward impressing guests rather than satisfying the "lone" college student's hunger.

5 out of 5 stars neat little cookbook for those of us who are culinary challenged.......2006-02-20

This is a cute little book, written in the style of 1960's mod--betty crocker. Written with the bachelor in mind, the recipes are delectable, yet non-challenging. They even have an EASY version of Baked ALaska, who knew that was possible? Makes a great gift for anyone that could use a no nonsense reference guide in the kitchen.....

3 out of 5 stars Dude Food: Rcipes for the Modern Guy.......2005-07-05

Although this recipe book was very nicely laid out, I thought the recipes were a little too complicated and required more ingredients than the normal bachelor would keep in his cabinets. I bought this book for my 21 year old nephew and was hoping for some very basic recipes for a young man on a budget.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the novice!.......2002-12-18

I ordered this book for my baby brother. I enjoy cooking and often entertain. As an experienced cook I could prepare these dishes but even I am put off by anything that requires me to zest three lemons. I've found that my husband is much more daring in the kitchen and he admits some of the recipes would be fun. The book offers witty commentary and the "dudes and don'ts" of entertaining are terrific. If you are looking for wit and special meals for the weekend this book would be fine. For everyday survival, this is not what you want.

              5 out of 5 stars Dude Review.......2000-09-28

At first, I was turned off by even receiving this book as a gift. I am 22, green behind the ears, and fresh out of college. Yes, I've had my fill of Ramen and Mac & Cheese, but thought that this book was, well, beneath me. I thought that until I actually made some of the recipes. My dinner companion (girlfriend) was astounded by the food--I'm sure it helped that I made her faves! As soon as she walked in she commented on how great my place smelled. The dinner was fabulous, and made me love Dude Food. Dude Food is the only cookbook I own, granted it is not by any means thourough, but it is a great starter for guys like me. The recipes are simple to follow and every possible pitfall is laid out for you and explained. One of these days, when I stop ordering in, I'm going to try some more recipes.

3 out of 5 stars Not for North America.......2007-03-23

It should be noted that this book is geared toward the sport as practiced in Britain. If you are considering Falconry in North America, you should consider other books as the laws vary considerably. I wish this had been noted in the description, as I had to return this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to a Wonderful Hobby.......2005-09-02

I have recently taken up falconry, and have found this guide to be an absolute godsend. I now know how to best feed my dear falcon, and even how to nurse him back to health when he is under the weather.
My falcon, Gustavo, is now regularly bringing me freshly killed rabbits.
Falconry is, of course, not for everyone. You need patience, some financial means, open space and a sense of tradition and decorum. For those of us who meet these criteria, it is a noble and rewarding hobby- nay, lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars The Modern Faconer.......2003-01-01

A comprehensive guide containing all you need to know about falconry - breeding, history, the laws, the schools, displays, equitment, and veterinary care. Walters takes you step-by-step through everything, and manages to keep the information interesting. A definate must read.

I truly enjoyed this book. The pictures were excellent quality and representative of the text. For the professional decorator or a person interested in house decoration it is funny and informative. I highly recommend this book.

Book was not what I expected. Book was recommended by a decorator who said Nancy Lancaster was her inspiration so I was expecting more decorating and less biography-like book. It does make an excellent coffee table presentation!!

This book is sumptuous and entertaining. Martin Wood weaves a fascinating story of the founder of English County House Style. If you love biography, decorating, and history along with beautiful photographs, renderings, and paintings of exquisitely decorated rooms, this book will fit the bill! A lavish feast for sight and soul.

5 out of 5 stars United States to Great Britain: Shared Style.......2006-08-30

This book takes the reader from the style of America in the early years of the 20th century to the life she created in Britain. Many aspects of style were shared in the two countries, but many are unique to each. It is interesting how Nancy Lancaster blended the two worlds into a grand country style that was appreciated by both. Her childhood home in Virginia was her inspiration throughout her life and helped set the style she was so well known for.

Martin Wood is an excellent biographer and chronicler of style and in this richly illustrated monograph on Nancy Lancaster he makes use of his own credentials as a garden designer and interior designer to praise the virtues of a lady few of us know.

Nancy Lancaster gained her reputation as a gardener and designer of gardens whose only clear rival has been Gertrude Jekyll. But Martin Wood increases her stature by naming her the creator of the English country house style. His writing style is fluid, humorous, tender and informative, giving all the biographical data about Lancaster's heritage, youth, and life in a manner that makes what seems to be a picture essay become a page-turner novel!

Lancaster devoted herself to recreating the English Country atmosphere, though she was a born and bred American. Her own various homes as well as those of people who engaged her expertise demonstrate how even the most modest dwelling can breed the charm of the English Country house. Her gardens are like dream sequences out of Arthur Rackham and her taste in balancing room space with the gracious furniture and window treatments and light is impeccable. The Book is filled with some very lush photography that takes the time to scrutinize her concepts as well as pleasure the eye over her accomplishments. This is far more than a design book. This is a book about a life and how it extended into creating a personal world of quiet dignity and beauty. Grady Harp, April 06

                              Book Description

Eighteen studies, many based on archival evidence or new methodologies, some proceeding from novel angles, explore the history and culture of Iberia, Italy, and the Mediterranean World in the Middle Ages. The studies were originally presented at the 27th International Congress of Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo in 1992, and have been collected in honor of Robert I. Burns, S.J., the distinguished medievalist and historian of Mediterranean Spain. Most of the studies mirror the honoree's scholarly interests: Muslim-Christian-Jewish relations in medieval Iberia, the economy and society of the Mediterranean World, religious polemic and ecclesiastical history, and medieval personalities and institutions. Ten of the studies concern aspects of cultural symbiosis or inter-religious relations in a pluri-ethnic society; and at least an equal number relate to the literary and social history of the Catalan-speaking lands of Mediterranean Spain.

Marie McDonald has not only created a book of beauty, but it is useful as well. Her photographs of lei are outstanding, and she takes it to the next level with detailed instructions on how to make many of the lei. I enjoy looking at the beautiful lei and daydreaming of returning home someday to Hawai`i nei.
