Quick, Cancel Your Trip to Ireland!.......2006-06-12
The characters inhabiting this anthology would pistol-whip a leprechaun and roll the little fairy into a dark alley.
In only 228 pages, Dublin Noir offers up nineteen bullet-fast tales full of blood, deceit, booze and "black Irish humor." Dealers, thieves, killers, and bottom-feeders all wrestle off the page, thanks to a talented mix of new and established writers. By the time you finish their stories, you'll want to sit down in a pub and share a pint with them.
Edited by the Irish king of noir himself, Ken Bruen, Dublin Noir won't disappoint.

Read It!.......2007-08-08
Let's see: This is an Ethshar series book and is therefore an excellent read. That may sound like a bold statement, but it is a fact. Before you run out and buy it I recommend that you start at the beginning with the first book "The miss enchanted sword", that way you will understand what is going on. Get the whole series and enjoy many hours wasting time reading about a world of total fantasy.
Note: This applies to every book in the series, I have read them all.
Hardcover please!.......2007-01-16
All of Lawrence Watt-Evans books are wonderful. Please print these in hardcover though!!! I hope somebody is listening out there.
Well thought-out fantasy tale.......2003-12-01
Young Tabaea the Thief becomes Tabaea the Empress in this installment of Lawrence Watt-Evans' Ethshar series. The point of view begins with Tabaea overhearing the secret of wizardry and how to create an athame, the magical dagger that all wizards use to channel their power. But with no training and no patience, her spell goes awry and her dagger appears worthless.
But when she uses it as a weapon, she finds that if it kills someone, she inherits all their power and ability. So Tabaea goes on a wizard-killing spree to become the strongest of them all, and then installs herself of Empress of Ethshar of the Sands.
What LWE does well is show how fantastical elements impact real people, in terms of politics, relationships, and day to day living. Many of us might have had daydreams where we take over a castle, but which of us thought it through enough to realize that you need the support of all those retainers and servants to keep the place running? LWE did, and shows the results of an impetuous teenaged monarch with no one to receive her orders.
Several reviewers mentioned the switching point of view between Tabaea and Lady Sarai, who investigates the serial murders. I agree the book would have been more effective if LWE stuck with one or the other, or at least not told us so much of Tabaea's doings in advance of Sarai's discovering them.
Note: this book is contemperaneous with Watt-Evans new Ethshar novel, _Ithanalin's Restoration_. However, as with most of the Ethshar series, they stand alone well and can be read in any order.
Another great Ethshar book!.......2003-11-02
Tabaea of Ethshar of the Sands has led a rather unfortunate life, and becoming a thief hasn't particularly helped. However, when she spies on a wizard teaching his apprentice how to make a magical dagger, she decides that magic is the life for her. When she makes her dagger, though, everything seems to go wrong, and the result is a seemingly ineffective black dagger. But, botched magic can have strange results, and this one results in the creation of one of the most powerful magical devices that the world has ever seen!
Lady Sarai's ability to solve mysteries has landed her the jobs of Minister of Investigation and acting Minister of Justice. When a series of magicians start turning up murdered, all in the same, seemingly ritualistic, way, Lady Sarai investigates. The magical traces found by magicians point to a coven of magicians of various schools...or do they? The Guild of Wizards is worried...Lady Sarai is worried...and they have good reason to be worried!
This is another great Ethshar book! In certain ways, it is different than the other Ethshar books that I have read, focusing in on two major characters (Tabaea and Sarai). But, as with the others, it is an exciting story, with lots of intrigue, magic, and nail-biting adventure. If you like stories of wizards, powerful magic and high adventure, then I highly recommend this great book to you!
The best of the bunch!.......2002-12-12
I love the Ethshar series, with the exception of Taking Flight, and this book is the best that LWE has produced. Some people don't like the way that the book is written or the way that the heroine in the tale turns out to be the villain, but to me this book was fast paced, had great fighting, and a tangible sense of impending doom if she isn't stopped. Don't listen to the other reviewers, as they aren't happy that this book kind of breaks from the mold of the other Ethshar novels. Give it a chance.
Book Description
At the dawn of the 21st century, the old paradigms of medicine have begun to fall apart. We no longer believe that our bodies are machines with parts that wear down, only to be braced up by drugs or replaced through surgery. Instead, a growing number of pioneering researchers embrace a new view of healing – one expounded by Dr. Richard Gerber in his groundbreaking best–seller, Vibrational Medicine.
Now he shows how to put this new way of thinking into practical use, describing the role of consciousness and "thought forms," as well as the benefits of homoeopathy, acupuncture, colour and light healing, magnetobiology, and other therapies. A traditionally trained physician, Dr. Gerber combines scientific evidence with traditional methods from the East and West to unlock our potential for healing ourselves.

I was disappointed since I gave it for a gift and had ordered "New" for that specific purpose!!
A practical, succinct description of tomorrow's medicine.......2007-01-08
A practical, succinct description of tomorrow's medicine
At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the old paradigms underlying the sciences are beginning to fall apart. This is nowhere so clearly seen as in medicine and in the physical sciences. Physicists seeming to be less resistant to innovation than physicians, quantum theory has effectively replaced the mechanistic theories of Newton and even the relativistic teachings of Einstein as orthodoxy.
Vibrational healing now occupies a space in relation to conventional biomedicine precisely analogous to that held by what was called the 'New Physics' in the 1940's and 50's.
Dr. Gerber informs us that vibrational medicine philosophically rests on the recognition that the human being is more than a physical body, but also incorporates a "body" of life energy, a "body" of sensitivity and feelings, and a spiritual essence or Self. Vibrational modalities interact with these subtle bodies of the human being, evoking specific qualities in response. We can say that they work in a similar way to inspirational music or art, which carry meaning through the vehicle of sound or light, while the modalities of vibrational medicine work through the medium of the patterns of energy that suffuse, enfold and interpenetrate our physical selves.
Modern physics has known for decades that matter and consciousness are intertwined so finely as to seem to present the two as but aspects of a single phenomenon. Medical science nonetheless continues to utilize a nineteenth century model of the human being as a mechanism, but another machine (albeit an especially complicated one) in a world of machines. Given present trends, we can reasonably expect that in the coming century medical science will develop ways of assessing the impact of consciousness on health, and we will learn more about ourselves and the ways in which vibrational healing modalities work.
Dr. Richard Gerber's work is destined to become a classic: a practical, succinct description of tomorrow's medicine - so clearly written that one might read it and without further ado utilize some of the more straightforward therapeutic modalities described therein which run the gamut from homeopathy to color therapy, from radiesthesia to Reiki.
I unhesitatingly recommend Dr. Richard Gerber's valuable and delightfully-written volume to every healer, professional or lay, with an interest in alternative or complementary medicine or energetic healing.
How Many Ways Can You Spell QUACK?.......2006-08-06
Vibrational Medicine is allegedly written by someone with an M.D. With that being so, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that the author had a fair amount of education and was capable of writing a book that while potentially controversial (nothing wrong with that per se) but was supported by real research which, of course, would also be listed in a well-written bibliography. Don't expect anything like this; however, from Richard Gerber - the guy is a real QUACK!
I originally had high hopes for this book - with the topic being "vibrational medicine" there is an incredible wealth of information on all kinds of related topics - including the complete sound spectrum and the electromagnetic continuum. Obviously an enormous amount of time could be spent on examining such readily (and empirically) identifiable uses of such waveforms but that seems to be expecting far too much from Gerber.
Instead of science, Gerber decides to spew forth endless pages of New Age quackery beginning with a seemingly never-ending discourse on chakra's and other such garbage. He refers to "research" conducted by clairvoyants, psychics, faith healers, "medical intuitives", and a whole plethora of other euphemisms as the basis for his drivel. This appears to be designed to legitimize the fact that he can't support the bizarre ideas he presents.
While one can't help but wonder if Gerber must have missed his thorazine when he wrote this nonsense, he covers many of the most ridiculous modalities of "healing" but ignores many, many valid ones. For example, Gerber doesn't even mention the use of sound - a treatment modality that has found uses in essentially every culture and yet he goes into such bizarre topics as long distance "color therapy" where the healer merely "thinks" of a color while projecting his/her healing thought upon a patient who happens to be miles away.
In fact, this book contains so much meaningless tripe that it might be best to sum it up by hypothesizing a visit to Gerber's "medical" practice. For example: suppose you are in the midst of a massive heart attack. After reading this book, it is easy to imagine that Gerber would tell you that his on-staff "medical intuitive" took the day off in order to find some more snake oil. As a result, he needs to call the psychic hotline first (because he can't read your aura) and will need the so-called clairvoyant at the other end of the line bathe you in "indigo" in order to unblock your chakras. Let's not forget that you will need to be facing west, during your heart attack, and have magnets placed upon your chest as you sniff the essence of dandelions that have been fermented in a green room (shaped like a pyramid, of course).
While there are so many promising approaches to healing that use legitmate techniques for overcoming sickness, books like this do nothing but harm those who are doing real research into alternative medicine modalities. If you have any sense, at all, avoid this unscientific pile of excrement behind ... after all, you wouldn't want to block your chakras!
Very Informative.......2006-05-21
This book is so intense. It gets into information that some people aren't ready for. One of the concepts was: everything has an energy force, for instance, if you want love in your life, put rubies in a pitcher of filtered water in the early AM sun. Drink that water with infused ruby energy. The ruby energy will fill your prana, chi or vital force. It is not hocus-pocus. The author gets into scientific fact of how and why this happens. It actually lightened my mood. The placebo affect? Perhaps. There is so much information covered in this book. It takes time to absorb the information. Then read some more. But it is fascinating. I think I'll take mine out and read it again.
A Classic!.......2006-01-15
Richard Gerber continues to update this classic, which is outstanding, comprehensive and comprehensible.
If you are looking for an introduction to the many different novel forms of treatment which have emerging over the last century, this is one of the best places to start. He has also observed some of the profound similarities between healing and spiritual growth. Many of us have seen individuals undergo sudden and sometimes unexpected spiritual awakenings when they have been working wioth some of these techniques.
Highly recommended!

Here are more than 250 of the restaurant's most popular dishes fine-tuned for the home cook in straightforward recipes for the way we live today.
This is spirited cooking for every day -- from casual lunches and quick weeknight meals to family feasts and elegant entertaining. There are main-dish salads; soups that make a meal; rustic ragoûts; satisfying stews; vegetables on the grill; quick stir-fries; casseroles layered with flavor; innovative side dishes; pizzas, tortilla dishes, and savory tarts; pastas and risottos; warm beans and grains; sandwiches; salsas; pickles; and the famous Greens desserts.
The heart of Greens cooking is to use the best, freshest ingredients -- whether from the grocery store or your local farmers' market. Advice on finding and preparing these ingredients is combined with restaurant tips that simplify work in the kitchen. After eating in the restaurant in San Francisco, I ordered the book and love the recipes---even a non-vegetarian will love the wonderful pastas and salads, especially the yummy desserts.
Running out of steam?.......2007-05-15
This is a beautifully produced book, and I couldn't resist buying it to complete my Greens collection, but there isn't a whole lot that's new or different, as far as I can tell.
I love this book!.......2006-11-04
This was my first purchase of books related to Greens, and I love their food! Remember, this is not always going to be quick, but if you love flavorful food, the techniques and tips here can enhance your cooking abilities even when you're working with other foods. Ingredients are discussed in great detail.
After I bought this book, I bought almost every book related to the Greens restaurant chefs and I love them all. This one is very nicely done and the layout is very pleasing to the eye.
Innovative, Vegetarian, but..........2006-04-12
I borrowed this book from my local library. We have cooked 5 different dishes from the book, all of which were delicious. The recipes are well-written, very detailed cooking instructions are given, specifying the kind of vegetables used (e.g. Finn potatoe, Muir Organic Tomatoes...), the cooking times (in minutes) for each step, the ammount of vegetables used.
The recipes all ternd out to be very tasty and wonderful, even for a non-vegetarian like me. However, sometimes, I found the ammounts of different ingredients too much, a bit more simplicity in the recipes would have focused the taste and saved money, when some expensive ingredients just "dissappeared" in the pot.
As a note of caution, one should be aware that few of these recipes are quick recipes, most require an hour or more of preparation time (making stocks, sauces, chopping vegatables, mixing and grinding spices). However, I loved the approach of "making things from scratch" - things can always be replaced, and in certain cases suggestions are made.
one of my favorite cookbooks.......2004-10-12
I bought this book last year, when it first came out, and since then it has become of one of my favorite cookbooks. (I'm not a vegetarian, BTW.) I've cooked about twenty-odd recipes from this book, and I've been pleased with all of them. The recipes are well-written, reliable, and delicious.
The term "everyday" may be misleading to some folks. These are not recipes you throw together to put a meal on the table at the end of the workday. They're more like simplified restaurant recipes that have been adapted to the home kitchen.
Some of my favorite recipes: potato salad with green beans, corn quesadillas (addictive), and grilled fingerling potato salad. I made the tomato pizza with feta and lemon for some friends, and they swooned over it. (Then they went out and bought the cookbook.)
This is also one of the most beautiful cookbooks on my shelf. It's a visual pleasure to use this book. Kudos to the illustrator.

Informative but Unfocused (Where were the editors?).......2007-07-29
If I may, I'd like to start off this review by sharing pertinent background information. First off, birds have been part of my life for 28 years. Birds varieties with which I am personally familiar include Amazon parrot, lovebird, cockatiel, and my all-time favorite, the budgerigar (better known as a parakeet). Second, I have a background as a writer. As a result, what you are about to read in criticism of "Conures: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual", does not reflect exclusively on the author, who is obviously very knowledgeable and competent, but primarily on the seemingly incompetent editors of this reference guide.
The editors of this work, which are not named, have failed to determine the angle (focus) they would like the author to concentrate upon, and hence this highly credentialed ornithologist and zoologist, Dr. Matthew M. Vriends, attempts to cover too much ground in too few chapters. The title page boasts that the reader will learn "Everything about Purchase, Care, Nutrition, and Behavior", but it just doesn't deliver. Instead, the author spends a great deal of time delving into a subject that few bird owners will find useful: breeding.
Initially, the book starts out very simplistically by addressing very basic aspects of bird care that will be of little use to anyone who has ever owned a bird (keep water dishes clean, provide toys, offer your bird a variety of fruits and vegetables, etc.). This is all well and good if the purpose of the book is to educate the pet bird newbie. With minimal transition, however, the author goes off on a tangent on conure courtship practices, which should have been reserved for the appropriately titled chapter, "Breeding South American Conures". Apparently it did not occur to the editors that the average bird owner will not become a breeder, or that if a bird owner opts to breed at all, he or she is likely to seek out dedicated reference material.
To illustrate the author's scattered but seemingly entrenched fixation on breeding, the subject is first broached in the second chapter, "Housing, Care, And Management" (regarding nesting boxes), and is visited again in the fourth chapter, "Understanding Conures" (regarding the aforementioned courtship rituals), and again in a dedicated chapter, "Breeding South American Conures". While the subject of breeding is not entirely without merit in a book that touts itself as an all-inclusive guide to conures, at a very minimum the former references should have been grouped with the latter.
Overall, this reference presents a disjointed mixture of simplistic and advanced information with little attention paid to intermediate questions or concerns (paying comparatively little attention to the number of illnesses and environmental hazards to watch out for, for example).
Most notably, the book failed to answer the most basic of question: How long, on average, do conures live?
The second critical flaw is in not advising would-be conure owners to buy a hand-fed or hand-raised conure whenever possible to ensure that the bird will bond with humans, and will not be overly fearful or aggressive (inclined to bite).
The third flaw is that the book advises in the first chapter, "Acquisition of Stock" to turn to the last chapter, "South American Conure Species", for information related to "which types are best suited to be kept as household pets without too many difficulties". Unfortunately, there is very little information in this section to satisfy this promise, and with respect to many species the answers are entirely ignored.
The fourth flaw takes place in the fourth chapter, "Understanding Conures". If it were to remain true to its title, the chapter should have included more on the psychology of conures. The book leaves virtually untouched, for instance, causes or solutions for screaming, how to prevent birds from becoming finger biters (effective training methods), the suitability of these birds around other pets or children, what is considered dangerously hot/cold for an indoor vs. outdoor conure, the dangers posed by bacteria from cats or human saliva, aerosol sprays, air fresheners, nonstick cookware, West Nile virus, etc. (To the author's credit, there is a sidebar on toxic indoor and outdoor plants, however.)
The fifth and last chapter dedicated to "South American Conure Species", contains the final glaring omission. I fully expected to see specific notes on how to identify gender or approximate age -- relevant because my new family member is a Half-Moon Conure that flew up to a neighbor who, in turn, gave it to me -- and yet there were no comments on age determination, and very little sexing information beyond various invasive methods such as endoscopy or DNA testing, which are described in chapter four. Devoting an entire chapter at the conclusion of the book to species-specific information -- which consists mostly of trivia-like tidbits pertaining to native habitats -- while neglecting to mention gender clues such as male vs. female coloration patterns, for example, was a poor judgment call, in my opinion.
In all fairness, a book of this length, at 106 pages excluding the index, cannot be all things to all people.* That reality, in particular, underscores the value of choosing a focus and sticking to it -- yet Barron's Educational Series, Inc. editors failed to target the book to a specific type of reader or market.
None of this is to say that this book neglects to impart valuable information. In fact, it touches upon almost every remaining issue of interest -- from identifying a healthy bird (e.g. healthy conures generally sleep on one foot), to the difference between an outdoor aviary, indoor aviary and a "bird room", to what size of perch is best suited for their feet. Unfortunately, this work misses some of the obvious questions and over-emphasizes some of the matters that are of less interest to non-breeders or new owners. Finally, I found at least one aspect of the author's advice questionable: bathing a bird in dish soap in preparation for a bird show. If you are going to forcefully wash a bird at all, why not advocate less harsh or toxic cleansers, or at least those that are less likely to sting or burn, such as baby-safe products?
In conclusion, I am sorry to note that the Internet is a better resource for information about conures, which is a sad reality because reference book sales will increasingly suffer in this Internet age until, that is, publishers figure out how to offer reference material that is more informative and engaging than the average Website posted by amateurs or volunteer experts. With stiff competition from armchair enthusiasts, often at no cost, publishers must take extraordinary care to ensure that their subject matter is exceptionally well organized, carefully targeted, and clearly written by a professional writer who has anticipated the questions readers will ask so as to avoid the meandering or repetitive style associated with novice writers, be they academic experts who have a tendency to come across as impersonal, overly technical or dry (without proper editorial oversight), or Website-running hobbyists who are often conversational and informal in tone, yet lacking in credible credentials.
Bottom line? If you want an introduction to specific information about breeding conures, this book will offer more information than you might otherwise expect from its all-inclusive title, "Conures: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual". If, on the other hand, you wish to learn generalized information about training techniques, or the ownership pros and cons of specific conure varieties (including lifespan), look elsewhere.

Not for the average Joe.......2005-09-06
I have to agree with most of what's been said here. I have two wonderful hand-reared black-tailed conures as pets - now this species is virtually unheard-of in captivity, so I bought this book on the strength of the 'detailed species descriptions' advertised. What a slap in face! Apparently my birds are simply 'similar to maroon-bellied conures, but ...not as interesting' (exact quotation). The book is written from a breeder's point of view, and a breeder stuck two decades ago for that matter. There is a strangely impersonal tone to the whole book, which some pet owners who don't see their birds as liquid assets may find off-putting. I certainly did. However, the many photos are good, which earns it the extra star.
Dutch aviculturist and bird vet.............2004-12-15
Perhaps because of his background as a breeder of various species of domestic (pet birds) and experience as a bird vet, I find Matthew Viends' books tend to slant toward the physical care and breeding birds. He maintains outdoor aviaries, which can be much more of a challenge than a simple cage in a third floor apartment. So, if you only read Vriends you might become overly concerned about health issues and nest boxes.
On the other hand Vriends' books are very informative, including this volume on Conures. He informs the reader about health matters, so that if you do experience a bird who is 'under the weather' you won't panic.
If you are seriously contemplating buying your first Conure, you might want to read Anne Watkins book on Conures and use Vriends book to complement topics dealing with Conure health and feeding issues.
To pellet or not to pellet...Vriends covers this topic and I find it timely as my new Conure (who was formerly owned by a kind lady) is fond of Zupreme Conure pellets (except purple..he apparently does not like grape). You can drive yourself crazy trying to feed your feathered pal all the correct veggies, egg yolk seed mix, minerals, cuttlebone, etc. (and I do this) or you can think about pellets. (My birds get a great assortment of greens and most of them also have pellets with or in lieu of their seed mix.) It is comforting to know that a vet and breeder of Vriends' stature is supportive of pellet use.
Out dated, Breeding orientend........2003-11-13
There is to much focus on breeding Conure's, the info there is about keeping a Conure as a pet is outdated, I would reccomend the book on Conure's by Julie Rach instead!
Hope this helps!
Outdated info., Not informative for captive/handfed birds!.......2001-03-18
This book was obviously written at a time when most Conures were imported from the wild and not captive bred or handfed. A large portion of this book deals with how to acclimate and taim a wild or unfriendly bird. Furthermore this book is not a good companion for the Conure owner looking to find information on a particular species. Many of the species covered in this book are not even avalible as pets or to be imported into the U.S. When I finally came to the section on the bird I was interested in purchasing all I found were the physical characteristics with nothing about its general temperment as a pet. This was hardly helpful as I knew exactly what the bird looked like but little else. Another topic of no use to me was the detailed information on the breeding of Conures. I am looking for a better source of information and would not reccommend this book to the average pet owner.

Incomplete information for conures just as pets.......1999-08-31
This book is a good source for those who are looking for information on basic care and breeding of conures. However, it gives little information on keeping Conures as pets. There are almost no training tips given.
Not a great information source for keeping companion birds........1999-08-20
This is not of great value to the average companion bird owner. It is geared mainly to the individual interested in breeding and setting up a breeding avaiary. There is very scant info on personality and characteristics. As most info is for breeding purposes, all cage and care requirements are written for at least 2 birds. Almost all info is provided concerning wild caught, or nearly adult-parent reared offspring. As it is so easy to locate a good breeder that hand rears young, this is of little use. This book did not meet my needs, but would be useful to a perspective breeder of Sun Conures.
My Review.......1999-08-09
This book is great for those who have just purchased their new conure. There are beautiful illustrations and many colored photos. But the book is mostly about breeding and it contained words that weren't really clear. It should have had more tips on training the bird. But other than those, i would say that it would be a good book to buy.
Photos excellent. Not geared for the pet bird owner........1999-08-08
I am a pet bird owner looking for info about behavior specfic to conures. I felt this book was primarily adressing those who want to get into breeding of birds. The photos were excellent. I have a green eyed conure, she is delightful and while green, the edges of her feathers are rimmed with a lighter green. She is beautiful and personable, contrary to the book's opinion of this type of conure.

Decent book, although, his first is far better........2005-10-20
I have read and enjoyed Tom Shannon's first KISS price guide since it was released in 2000 & have found it to be a VERY informative and helpful resource for pricing my collection. The prices are quite accurate and it is very thorough, covering nearly every item in the vast KISS memorabilia empire. It is a very well done book and the printing is top notch. I have been very eagerly awaiting Shannon's new book since I heard he would be starting another about two or three years ago. I purchased his new book "Warman's KISS Collectibles Field Guide" and in my opinion, it leaves much to be desired. Although this is of the highest quality printing, its thick & small 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" size makes it difficult to go navigate easily. Also the amount of info on the pages is very limited due to its small size. The tons of quality color photos he includes with his books are a big plus. It does feature the prices on the listed page rather than having to flip to the back of the book, which was the case with the 2000 book which is a bonus. Many of the old items that were in the first book are in this book. I was expecting much more of the newer items to be included in the book. Much to my disappointment, where some items may have been left out of a category in the 2000 edition, many complete categories are left out completely in the 2005 edition. This is a far better printed book than Ingo Floren's (released last year), although not as complete. If you want a GREAT price guide pick up Tom Shannon's first book. This one may fill in some gaps for newer items, but it is not a complete listing by any means. It does have an interview with Bill Aucoin that is very interesting. This would make a good traveling companion (hence the name Field Guide?) due to its small size.
Excellent Book.......2005-10-15
This is an excellent book. Tons of terrific color photos along with a cool interview with former Manager Bill Aucoin makes this product a winner!

Book Description
Seed to Seed is a complete seed-saving guide that describes specific techniques for saving the seeds of 160 different vegetables. This book contains detailed information about each vegetable, including its botanical classification, flower structure and means of pollination, required population size, isolation distance, techniques for caging or hand-pollination, and also the proper methods for harvesting, drying, cleaning, and storing the seeds. Seed to Seed is widely acknowledged as the best guide available for home gardeners to learn effective ways to produce and store seeds on a small scale. The author has grown seed crops of every vegetable featured in the book, and has thoroughly researched and tested all of the techniques she recommends for the home garden. This newly updated and greatly expanded Second Edition includes additional information about how to start each vegetable from seed, which has turned the book into a complete growing guide. Local knowledge about seed starting techniques for each vegetable has been shared by expert gardeners from seven regions of the United States-Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast/Gulf Coast, Midwest, Southwest, Central West Coast, and Northwest.
Customer Reviews:
Complex Reference Tool.......2007-09-04
I found this book to be very interesting, I found myself wishing that I could talk to the auther about her experiences in growing. I think an in depth description of each growing stage would be helpful but would make the book way too long....But isn't that what a reference tool should be?
A good guide for the job.......2007-08-16
I think Ashworth has made a splendid job with this book, especially as there are none like it on the market. There`s a lot of good solid info, and everything you need to save seeds from a vegetable variety is easily found. All in all pretty much as good of a reference book as you can wish for.
A minor thing that irritates me, is that when after every vegetable some regional experts give their advice on growing the vegetable at hand, I get the feeling that even if they have not even tried some plants, they give the advice "They can`t be grown in this climate". I myself am from Finland, and I still grow some of the vegetables they mention every season here!
Great for seed saving and unusual vegetable reference.......2007-08-10
It's wonderfully complete for seed saving. I've saved my own carrot seeds now! And the squash from last years saved seeds looks just like it should. This book covers all the techniques, issues and risks although I think it's very much geared towards multi-generation saving of entirely pure seed - you don't need to be quite so careful on the isolation if you just want to grow one generation of kale for your own use (mine came out okay in spite of only minor control of nearby brassicas), and saving seed with only two chard plants, not enough genetic diversity to preserve a variety for long, can by themselves produce enough seed so you'll eat chard every day for 5 years.
It's also a great reference for unusual vegetables, it's amazingly complete; you can find out about 4-sided bean or other tropical type vegetables. And it sorts out the different squash and pepper species very well.
The gardening information in each section hasn't impressed me much as useful or accurate; but we are in-between the zones they provide.
Worth having for the details........2007-05-12
If I remember correctly this was a bit pricey for the amount of information it contains, but then again it goes to a good cause I believe...I hope seed savers. Anyway, it gives some real particulars like varieties and growing region that I found very helpful. Even a tip about saving tomato seeds I never knew after 38 years of gardening. It explained my low germination rate! If you are going to save seed from year to year it is a must have.
Save those non-hybrid seeds.......2007-01-08
This is an advanced gardening book for the gardener who want to save seeds from non-hybrid plants. The book covers well over a hundred types of plants. However, some plants are not included for some reason. Overall, it is an excellent resource for gardeners.
