Book Description
Are the nude spies lolling in the ancient Roman communal baths of Elizabethan England plotting the return of Mary Queen of Scots' She is said to be clamoring to return to these healing waters. Once again Susanna, Lady Appleton, encounters murder and treason, and only she can unravel the crimes in the intriguing year of 1575. Rosamund, Susanna's twelveyearold foster daughter, is certain her French tutor has been murdered. Rosamund and her friends are quite modern: they cut school, rebel against authority, and giggle over secrets. But can teenage mischief be construed as spying and treason' These are most significant matters to the Elizabethans, as the wrong religion, the wrong marriage, the wrong friends...may all be seditious.

Amazing.......2005-05-02
When I decided to read the book, I didn't know what to expect. By the end of the story, I was a believer, what an amazing story.
Colin Liotta is the new J.K. Rowling.......2004-12-02
If you enjoyed Harry Potter or have any interest at all in boys or werewolves, you will love this book. The prose? ARTFUL. The plot? DELICIOUS. The imagery? AMAZING. This writer really knows his stuff. As he matures we can only expect greater things from him. My only complaint was the shipping time...8-11 business days...who can wait that long? While I waited, each day I made a mark on my wall to signify the passing of time. Finally after 15 marks (I sadly did not spring for air shipping) the book arrived! One of the top moments in my life. Please read this book. Liotta is a star in the making! You will not be disappointed like you would if you bought some other crap book about werewolves. Frankly, even though werewolves are the theme, Liotta delves into far deeper thematic issues, such as the loneliness of childhood and the awkwardness of adolescence. As a person it is your duty to read this book, if you don't I must say you are less than human and it is perhaps you who is the monster. Good day sir.
The Boy Werewolf is a great treat.......2004-11-29
This novel was one of the best I have ever read. Imaginative, refreshing, and sexy. Colin J. Liotta is one of the greatest writers of his age and time, and I cannot wait until the he completes the rest of "The Boy Werewolf" series. Runteldat.

Jack's Review.......2007-10-01
In spite of the regular reference to the medical staff at passages and their constant and detailed involvement in the treatment of patients at Passages, there is a conspicuous absense of professionsl medical knowledge and reference in the book.
The best book on the subject! Could not put it down.......2007-09-13
I bought this book for a family member and was expecting another dull book an addiction, but to my surprise, it was so well written and the stories (like Pax's) were so exciting and read like a fiction thriller. I just could not put it down! (Hence it delayed me sending out the book).
What captivated me the most was Prentiss' novel outlook on the cure for addictions. He seems to have nailed it on the head - look to the root cause of the problem - which is often multi-faceted and he addresses each one of the possible treatment aspects in a holistic way. Most other treatment programs blame alcoholism on genes and call it an incurable disease. That approach does not seem to help people.
Prentiss' research and wisdom is a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how to cure addiction - either their own or someone else's.
A unique approach to recovering from addiction.......2007-03-09
Having a family member dependent on alcohol, I became interested in Chris Prentiss book "The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure". With the help of his son Pax,an ex-addict, the author gives us an extraordinary insight into the life of addicts, their pain and struggle, and the real dangers they face. Chris instinctively knew that there was an "underlying cause" behind his son's addiction - and indeed behind every person's addiction. Dealing with the cause helped him cure his son, and together they started their rehabilitation centre in Malibu using that unique approach to cure their clients. Chris goes on to explain, with real-life examples, the role each of the ten or so therapist plays in his Centre. It all makes so much sense! No wonder Passages has such a high success rate...
Enlightening and entertaining.......2007-02-15
During the past few weeks, I read a book given to me. The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure - A Holistic Approach to Total Recovery by Chris Prentiss is one of the most enlightening books that I have ever read - not because of his views of alcohol and drug dependency and their causes, but because the book informed me that these views are relatively new to the world of addiction therapy.
Chris believes that drug and alcohol dependent people don't have an incurable disease. Dependency is 100% curable. Alcoholics and drug addicts are simply trying to cope with the world in which they live. Their coping mechanisms just happen to be alcohol and drugs. And alcohol and drugs work very well - regardless of whether or not they will eventually kill you. I always thought it was obvious. Apparently not. So, I will help Chris spread the word, and promote his book as well.
The book itself is great. It is easy to read and full of warmth, very chatty. It is a wealth of information both for dependent people and for their therapists. This book makes a great reference source. The third chapter is written by Chris's son, Pax. Pax was addicted to heroine, cocaine and alcohol for ten years. Chris got him clean forty times. This chapter is Pax's story and it is as heartening and illuminating as it is appalling.
Once Pax discovered the reason for his dependency and he and Chris were able to cure it, they opened a rehabilitation centre for dependency treatment in Malibu called Passages. It has the highest success rate of any dependency treatment center in the world.
For those who are 'white knuckling their way through sobriety...'.......2007-02-13
As a talk show host I am accustom to being inundated with requests from PR folks trying to get me to book their particular client on my show to plug their book. Since I didn't like my current events show to be a blatant advertisement for a writer, I generally delete these types of solicitation ...25 times a day. In fact I had hit delete on the email regarding Chris Prentiss's book just as my eye caught a phrase and I had to actually retrieve the message. It was the cure rate of better than 80% that got my attention, and triggered my skepticism...along with a tiny sliver of hope since I knew how many times friends and members of my own family had fallen off the wagon. I booked Chris for 15 minutes and they sent me the book. A few days beforehand I thought I better skim the book so I could ask him some tough questions. I read the entire book and called the pr representative back and booked Chris for the entire show. I think what hooked me was Chris's comment about observing an AA meeting where people were `white knuckling their way through sobriety". Controversial statement. And true for too many. The book was specific about the path. Find the underlying cause(s). Work on that. The true story of his son's journey was engaging and encouraging. For weeks and months after the show I received emails and phone calls from listeners: "What was the name of that guy again? What's the name of his book?" Of all the shows and topics I have covered in 17 years on air, I have never received such a response.

Learning what not to do.......2007-01-03
This is a book I used in my research to see if I wanted to start a catering business. This book told me about all the down sides to the business and I quickly realized I did not want to get into the biz. Good start if you wish to research before diving in!
The book does have a lot of recipies to use for large events that I use while entertaining.
Revealing truth.......2006-11-04
This book saved me from making a bad decision. My friends kept telling me I made great parties. Good buffet, interesting appetizers, great dinners. They told me I should consider doing it professionally to make extra money.
One of the books I read on the subject was this one. It has good recipes, more importantly it describes recipes in a manner that enable scaling for different sizes of event and helps you choose the right recommendations for different size events.
It also describes what's involved in actually doing professional catering. I was convinced. Turning a hobby into a business can ruin the hobby. Rather than go Pro, I'll stay a happy amateur; but one with better skills in managing the parties I through.
Catering like an idiot.......2006-09-28
This book is a collection of vague and uninformative quotes, dated menus, and common sense advice. One word for Ms Halvorsen, ICE. The details of coffee and tea service are poured over, yet, at no time does the book remind the would-be caterer to buy ice! It is amazing that in such a competitive publishing world that books like this are written.
good for a beginner.......2002-10-25
I think this was an excellent book for a person starting to plan a catering business--minus the large recipe section. It tells you exactly what to expect in this business, and includes helpful sample forms (i.e.billing, invoice) that will surely come in handy. In addition, Halvorsen includes helpful lists for restaurant schools, wholesale markets, kitchen suppliers, etc. for many cities throughout the US. Definitely worth the book price and recommended for someone who is starting out or even thinking of starting a business in the industry because she tells it like it is!
a very good intro to professional catering.......1998-05-30
When I bought this book we had been catering for awhile on a very small scale. Halvorsen does a excellent job of presenting catering as it really is, hard work, long hours and requires exceptional people and mgt. skills. She offers sound suggestions to help those on a shoe string budget choose wisely and avoid major catering pitfalls. The invoices and forms she uses as examples are more than adequate for anyone to use in their own fledgling business. For a basic book she covers alot of material in a general way leaving you with a outline of the areas you WANT to do more indepth research about. The only problem area for me with this book is the recipe section. I would rather have had a resource list that I could have pulled material from to find recipes elsewhere and had Halvorsen use those pages to cover advertising, taxes, bookeeping and so on in greater detail. Well worth the books purchase price.

Italian Greyhound: Complete Handbook.......2007-01-10
There are very few books available for the Italian Greyhound owner - this is a very valuable book as these are very special and unique dogs. A good reference book, having wonderful photos as well.
A good basic book about the breed.......2006-02-25
This is a good starting point for anyone interested in the breed however I do not feel it is worth the cover price. Like many other books of this nature that discuss basic breed specifics, it discusses Italian Greyhounds in a general optimistic way using glossy pages with lots of cute pictures. I would encorage any prospective owner to continue their research using other sources and not just this one.
IG book.......2005-01-20
This was probably the first book we read before getting our IG, and we found it very helpful. If you talk to a responsible breeder about IG's, they should tell you what you need to know about them. Also, one search on the internet and it will bring up the IGCA. We have several books related to IG's and this book is just fine. IG's definitely aren't the breed for everyone. And they aren't very hard to potty train, you just have to be willing to teach them.
careless representation.......2004-10-19
As a veterinary hospital manager and owner of a 5 yr old IG, I am always looking for new material on the breed. I adore my IG, but she definitely has some "issues" that separate her from other breeds. This book does not mention the horrific difficulty owners have trying to potty train their IGs; this is by far the major reason that they are surrendered! The book says that they can be trained to go outdoors in the cold....I say "good luck!" This book says that they aren't fragile, but IGs are known to break their long, thin legs without doing anything out of the ordinary - mine has broken the same leg twice just jumping off the bed (which she does multiple times per day). The book mentions they have special dental needs, which is true, but it does not indicate just how costly this can be. IGs may be sweet, but they are also prone to neurosis. The fact that the book does not mention any of the above issues is irresponsible in my book;this is not an easy breed to own and it is important not to mislead readers BEFORE they go out and get a pup.
I was even more upset that not once did this book discuss spay/neuter of your pup, nor did it mention rescue organizations as an option for adopting an IG. Almost every state has an IG rescue group (for all of the dogs given up due to behavioral issues, potty training, etc). As far as spay/neuter, I know several male IGs that were neutered later in life and have to wear a sock velcroed around their middle because they mark everything in sight. It is careless to write a book that does not discuss sterilization at a young age - if nothing else than for health reasons such as mammary and prostate cancer.
As wonderful as they are, I consider IGs to be "special needs" dogs - not once is this portrayed in the book.
Pretty good; not too bad.......2003-04-07
I bought this book after I had decided I was interested in Italian Greyhounds. It was pretty good, has lots of information if you plan on purchasing an Italian Greyhound puppy, however, there are a few statements made in this book that I disagreed with.
One statement was on the fact that you should buy an Italian Greyhound puppy instead of an adult because "you can train it the way you want to." He did not bring up the topic of the Italian Greyhound Club of America rescue.
The author seemed rather one-sided and wrote only on how he did things, not other possiblities. For instance--crate training. He did not mention that Italian Greyhounds can be litter box trained as well, or even go into that subject.
The book was whoppingly based on his experience, while I appreciate that, what works for one owner does not work for another, and I was looking for more research, which I did not find.
Also, there were no "further resources" for further information on Italian Greyhounds, such as the Italian Greyhound Post, IGCA, or other resources.
It is still a pretty good book if you are interested in the basic information of the breed, such as breeding and show standards, and there are some nice pictures, but I don't think it's worth the cover price.
Book Description
It’s a favorite with readers: Every month, Country Living features homes where imaginative owners showcase their collections in eye-opening ways. Here are the very best of those ideas, presented in enticing photographs that display such charming items as a flock of miniature sheep gathered in a cabinet, elegant McCoy vases assembled on a sideboard, and pink lusterware plates hung en masse on the wall. In addition to being beautiful, these images demonstrate basic design principles for arranging pieces, editing a collection, selecting lighting, building custom shelves, and more. No matter whether the beloved items consist of pottery, menus, or birdhouses, this is the only guide a collector needs to create dazzling displays everywhere.
“…provides a way for collectors to artfully display, enjoy, and care for their collections.”—Library Journal.

All of these books are by the same publisher!.......2006-09-07
The publisher of all the books you list is the same publisher as the book Courtney Nolan edited. There is no mention of these other books in the byline but they are most certainly mentioned in the acknowledgments. Lots of books out there are repurposed from other books all by the same publisher. Obviously you were not aware of this.
RIP OFF-this book is re-print of other books...........2006-07-11
I wanted to let other buyers know-this book is a reprint of a collection of three other rubber stamping books:
making gifts with rubber stamps by sandra mccall
rubber stamp extravaganza by vesta abel
30 minute rubber stamp workshop by sandra mccall
NO WHERE does this state this on the cover OR online.
So, if you bought it online, like me, there is no way of knowing this is a reprint(absolutly NO new info in book).
I already own the other three books so I feel doubly tricked.
On top of everything else-the book is reprinted almost completely in black and white, with only a few color photos in the middle of the book AND they reprinted shortened versions of the instructions!
They should be ashamed to have put out this mess!
Save your money and buy one of the actual three reprinted books instead:(
NO STARS!

Book Description
In 1984 a radically new graphic design magazine set out to explore the as-yet-untapped and uncharted possibilities of Macintosh-generated graphic design. Boldly new and different, Emigre broke rules, opened eyes and earned its creators, Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko, cult status in the world of graphic design. After a decade of publishing, the jury is still out on Emigre. But now, thanks to this comprehensive 10-year retrospective, you can reach your own conclusions. Are Emigre's Mac-generated graphics important, influential and controversial
or just plain ugly? You decide. "The only people who have trouble reading Emigre are graphic designers who have been trained to make type clear. The rest of the world doesn't live in that purist atmosphere." Chuck Byrne, Print Magazine, September 1992 Here gathered together for the first time, you'll find: Every Emigre cover ever issued A full catalog of over 80 Emigre typefaces Emigre's most striking editorial layouts Plus stimulating and provocative commentary from both Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko How has a magazine that prints just 7,000 copies managed to outrage so many graphic designers while inspiring so many others? The answer is in your hands.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful retrospective of Emigre type foundry.......2006-07-30
Nowadays it's hard to remember that there was ever a time that Emigre was considered shockingly radical. With the massive surge of alternative type foundries and indie type designers, it's pretty hard to think of Emigre as "indie" any more. Not to mention the huge success of their typeface Mason--slapped over so many album covers and print ads in the last thirteen years that it's become a pest font damn near approaching that of Cooper Black or Hobo. But Emigre WAS radical, as this book reminds us. And they did more than just start a revolution in computer designed type. Their real value was to reintroduce a kind of type-centric design renaissance that hadn't really been seen since Jan Tschichold's "The New Typography".
Emigre made typographic design solutions exciting again. They also taught me a great lesson--type is something to think about and rant about--it's not just window dressing to go around the art. Who needs to design around a photograph when with the right font and some imagination you can ditch the photo altogether and have something considerably more challenging?
Anyway, if you can't tell, I think pretty highly of this book and agree that every designer should keep a copy around. More importantly, I think design students should look at it to get an idea of what IS possible with type--not just Emigre type, but with a true typographic approach to design, which I think the Emigre style embodies.
The book is several years old now and evidently out of print. Still it's worth the trouble to buy a used copy as they pop up from time to time.
A Must Book for Every Graphic Designer.......2003-07-24
The Emigre story traces the fascinating development of a magazine that introduced digital typography to the design world.
Rudy Vanderlans created Emigre in 1984, the year in which the the Macintosh computer changed graphic design and typography forever.
In its early years, the brilliant experimental type/design publication featured fonts designed Zuzana Licko, a pioneer in designing typefaces on the computer for the computer. Her early bitmap fonts, designed to be used on dot matrix printers, created an uproar in a design community that was already reeling from the drastic changes in typesetting and production methods. With the introduction of high res PostScript outline technology, Licko's designs became more sophisticated and designers began to appreciate the ability to design with typography in ways never thought possible.
This book traces the journey of digital type from shocking to mainstream and contains fascinating quotes from influential design professionals. Of special interest are many examples of the best work from the early Emigres, including all of the bold, memorable covers.
A must for every graphic design library.
Strickly for typographers only.......2002-05-16
I think this book is a wonderfull thing for typofreaks and i recommend it full heartedly for any typographer out there.
As for the rest of us mortals in the design cummunity, i dont believe there anything of interest in this book ( or should i say - large notebook) because it has no 'eye candies' of any sort, printed in two colors (black and ochre), has too much text in it and in general- looks bad.
innovative.......1999-11-29
The emigre magazine in one book, is cool, a impresive book, with a great size, like a big magazine shows the innovative design of the rudy vanderlas magazine trough the years, is a lovely book, buy it!
buy a bigger bookshelf for this one.......1998-03-17
Somewhat of a biased reviewer, I recommend this book to any person that loves typography and wants to see the results of tremendous creative forces within the field. Or, if you have wanted to do something for a long time but didn't think you could do it ... also recommended for you.

Product Description
One of the earliest and rarest books ever written by an African-American slave. Condemning slavery, it is an autobiographical account that criticizes slave-trade. It explicitly depicts the brutality and cruelty with which they were treated. Remarkable!
Book Description
First published in 1849 and largely unavailable for many years, The Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb is among the most remarkable slave narratives. Born on a Kentucky plantation in 1815, Bibb first attempted to escape from bondage at the age of ten. He was recaptured and escaped several more times before he eventually settled in Detroit, Michigan, and joined the antislavery movement as a lecturer.
Bibb’s story is different in many ways from the widely read Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave and Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. He was owned by a Native American; he is one of the few ex-slave autobiographers who had labored in the Deep South (Louisiana); and he writes about folkways of the slaves, especially how he used conjure to avoid punishment and to win the hearts of women. Most significant, he is unique in exploring the importance of marriage and family to him, recounting his several trips to free his wife and child. This new edition includes an introduction by literary scholar Charles Heglar and a selection of letters and editorials by Bibb.

Book Description
The African American slave narrative is popularly viewed as the story of a lone male's flight from slavery to freedom, best exemplified by the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845). On the other hand, critics have also given much attention to Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861), to indicate how the form could have been different if more women had written in it. But in stressing the narratives of Douglass and Jacobs as models for the genre, scholars have ignored the formal and thematic importance of marriage and family in the slave narrative, since neither author explores slave marriage in their works. This book examines the central role of marriage in The Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb, an American Slave (1849) and Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom; or the Escape of William and Ellen Craft from Slavery (1860). Bibb's slave wife and child account for significant innovations in the form and content of his narrative, while the Crafts' mutual dependence as a married couple results in a sustained use of dramatic irony. The volume closes by offering a thoughtful consideration of the influence of Bibb and the Crafts on the later fiction of Douglass, William Wells Brown, and Martin Delany. In doing so, it invites a critical reexamination of current assumptions about slave narratives.

Family Narratives.......2006-12-27
Heglar's "Rethinking the Slave Narrative" is a scholarly and focused academic work. He rightly expands narratives beyond the classic work of Douglass, and he rightly focuses upon narratives that distill aspects of Black family life. He reminds us that numerous slave narratives have volumes to say about slave family life. And what they have to say demolishes the myth that the Black family was unable to survive enslavement. Despite horrific attempts by White masters to destroy Black family life, they not only survived, they thrived--often and ultimately by faith.
