Book Description

From the golden age of art movies and underground cinema to X-rated porn, splatter films, and midnight movies, this breathtaking thriller is a tour de force of cinematic fact and fantasy, full of metaphysical mysteries that will haunt the dreams of every moviegoer. Jonathan Gates could not have anticipated that his student studies would lead him to uncover the secret history of the movies—a tale of intrigue, deception, and death that stretches back to the 14th century. But he succumbs to what will be a lifelong obsession with the mysterious Max Castle, a nearly forgotten genius of the silent screen who later became the greatest director of horror films, only to vanish in the 1940s, at the height of his talent. Now, 20 years later, as Jonathan seeks the truth behind Castle's disappearance, the innocent entertainments of his youth—the sexy sirens, the screwball comedies, the high romance—take on a sinister appearance. His tortured quest takes him from Hollywood's Poverty Row into the shadowy lore of ancient religious heresies. He encounters a cast of exotic characters, including Orson Welles and John Huston, who teach him that there's more to film than meets the eye, and journeys through the dark side of nostalgia, where the Three Stooges and Shirley Temple join company with an alien god whose purposes are anything but entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Book ..........2007-01-20

Highly engaging and incredibly entertaining from start to finish. Theodore Roszak's FLICKER takes the reader on an amazing journey through the history of film making with a religious conspiracy (rivaling THE DA VINCI CODE) thrown in for good measure. An intelligent and often times laugh out loud funny examination of modern culture with movies and movie makers providing the lens for the exam ... an outstanding, prodigious achievement. I'm looking forward (with some trepidation) to the film reportedly being made of this outstanding novel.

5 out of 5 stars Slick, Well-Written Conspiracy.......2006-09-05

A sharp, well-written book in the same vein as Da Vinci Code but much more sophisticated and with a backdrop of classic cinema. I really found myself enjoying the way that the plot slowly but inexorably built to a crescendo.

The characters were interesting and likable and the ideas were deeply chilling. I literally could not put the book down once I was about halfway through--I stayed up all night to finish!

5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating, in-depth, and intricately written........2006-07-22

I read this book in anticipation of a Darren Aronofsky film version. This book kept me waiting until the last page to fully grasp it's ideas and points, and after that, you find you have to start all over again (or at least I did). Complex, but intoxicating. The characters are written so sharply and vibrantly, you can't help but become wrapped up in them. This style and ability, of the author, allows the reader to be deceived, which might be difficult on the "big screen".
The books greatest strength, in my opinion, is it's in-depth descriptions of the characters. I was easily sucked into this world and dreaded the fact that eventually, I would run out of pages .

5 out of 5 stars Cinema in the Dark........2006-05-05

FLICKER is a book that combines a love of film with a thrilling plot to unravel a global conspiracy. The book is told from the first person perspective of Jonathan Gates, a premier film critic and scholar. Early in his life as a connoisseur of film, Gates discovers a missing movie of the infamous and enigmatic Max Castle. The movie haunts Gates and burns an aura of mystery into his mind. While watching the film he feels fascinated and repulsed simultaneously. The movie is both a work of genius and something that is pure evil. He is warned by his mentor and lover, Clarissa Swan to stay away from Castle because Castle's films do the opposite of what movies are supposed to do; movies should be works of art, enlightenment, amusement or a combination of the three, but Castle's films are none of those things. Despite, Clare's (Clarissa) warnings Gates becomes hooked and begins his life as the foremost scholar of Max Castle films. After that first night of viewing a Castle film, Gates begins a twenty-year crusade to uncover the mystery surrounding Max Castle and his life. His search takes him across the country and the world revealing one disturbing detail after another.

I enjoyed reading FLICKER. I found it to be a page turner. I was kind of let down by the ending, but as a whole the book was well written and had enough plot twists to keep me interested from one section to the next. Granted, there is a lot of subtext and background information between the major points of action, but I enjoyed that. Also, the book is easier to understand if one has an interest in film and is able to pick up many of the allusions the story refers to. Overall, the book is a thrilling and entertaining tale of love for the art of cinema, but a warning of how that art can be abused. It's much better than THE DA VINCI CODE.

1 out of 5 stars Complete Trash.......2006-03-16

I really didn't see why the whole book had to revolve around Jonathan Gates' sexual experiences. I just thought that the whole book was trash.

5 out of 5 stars Eco for Americans.......2001-07-30

This unjustly neglected work of paranoid suspense almost beggars rapid summary. Like all good tales of conspiracy and hidden menace, it starts small with a lost genius of cinema. The protagonist starts trying to track him down, and discovers more and more disquieting details. Who are the 'orphans', and why do they want Max Castle (the missing auteur) to stay missing? What are we being shown in the flickers between the frames? Like Eco, a surprising amount of obscure history and culture is slipped in between the plot and characterization; also like Eco, it is never just for show but advances the mood and tone. I wish I could find my copy!

4 out of 5 stars very solid hunt down the conspiracy story.......1999-09-09

Our protagonist, a film buff, tracks the missing films of an obscure German director through twisted alleyways of conspiracy. Spiced with technical film information which can give you a new slant on the movies, the hunt is the thing and its fun all the way.

Book Description

In his four-volume series Return to Neveryeon, Hugo and Nebula award-winner Samuel R. Delany appropriated the conceits of sword-and-sorcery fantasy to explore his characteristic themes of language, power, gender, and the nature of civilization. Wesleyan University Press has reissued the long-unavailable Neveryeonvolumes in trade paperback.

The eleven stories, novellas, and novels in Return to Neveryeon's four volumes chronicle a long-ago land on civilization's brink, perhaps in Asia or Africa, or even on the Mediterranean. Taken slave in childhood, Gorgik gains his freedom, leads a slave revolt, and becomes a minister of state, finally abolishing slavery. Ironically, however, he is sexually aroused by the iron slave collars of servitude. Does this contaminate his mission -- or intensify it? Presumably elaborated from an ancient text of unknown geographical origin, the stories are sunk in translators' and commentators' introductions and appendices, forming a richly comic frame.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy with a sense of reality.......2003-03-23

The longest of the Neveryon tales (the other collections are of a bunch of stories each, some novel length, most novella) as well as the second volume overall, this one really gives Delany the chance to stretch out and explore the culture of this world he's created in such detail. The story of a teenage girl Pryn with a goal in mind but basically winds up wandering around all over, encountering all sorts of people and places. However the book is much more than a simple travelogue, and Delany is too smart to reduce the story to simple Point A to Point B to Point C writing. The themes of slavery and sexuality (and when they intersect) are still explored, though not as prominently, but instead Delany chooses to focus more on the nature of power and myth, and how the perception of reality can create myth and perhaps even alter reality. Pyrn herself is a lot of fun, a strong female character, clever enough to follow her own agenda but not completely immune to the forces of other scheming around her. Some other characters make appearances, Gorgik gets basically a glorified guest star appearance but like all the stories, even when he's not in the story itself, his presence informs the actions of all the characters. Pryn's quest takes her all over and if the novel has any problems it seems to ramble at points and not go anywhere, as if Delany couldn't find the right balance between showcasing his culture or making an intellectual point, both of which are harder to sustain over the course of an entire novel. However these are minor issues and will only marginally affect anyone's enjoyment in the book (you also don't need a doctorate in whatever to understand the themes, while a decent amount of this probably went over my head, you can read and enjoy the story just the same) and the rich detail of the Neveryon culture is intact and expanded on brilliantly, from the decadence of the cities to the noble squalor of the huts and villages. His culture feels real but the book doesn't feel like a dissertation. Probably the best prawise I can give is that even with all the highbrow stuff, Delany didn't forget to actually write a story, and given the usual state of fantasy, that's high praise indeed.

Mehmet Oz is a Renaissance man of cardiac care, combining yoga, aromatherapy, hypnosis, energy healing, music therapy, acupuncture, and visual imagery into his surgery practice at the Complementary Care Unit of New York City's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He's adamant that the relationship between traditional and alternative medicine should be symbiotic, not mutually exclusive. His patients are proof of this: when treated holistically, not as just "another transplant patient" with a plaque-addled heart, they perceive less pain during surgery and recuperation, are less likely to suffer depression, and heal more quickly.

While med school at the University of Pennsylvania didn't expose Oz to the holistic healing methods he employs today, his upbringing in Turkey and exposure to cultures worldwide did leave him open to new ideas. Oz helped develop the LVAD, or left ventricular assist device, which helps the heart of a patient awaiting a transplant keep pumping. Piqued when he was asked about his patients, "But has restoring their hearts restored their health?"--and he had to respond, "No"--Oz started incorporating one alternative method after another into his practice. He started with massage after seeing how it rejuvenated his wife after childbirth.

Healing from the Heart is not for the weak of stomach; Oz occasionally gets graphic, such as in the opening heart-transplant scene: "I finished closing the last tiny bleeder, then called for the electric saw, which was plugged in and handed to me by its metallic handle ... the saw cut through the bone like soft pine." If there's anything that might inspire you to pass up greasy French fries, this book is it. Current cardiac patients and their families will be enthralled by the tale of Oz's holistic revolution and his patient-success stories, and other health practitioners would do well to pay attention to what he advocates. --Erica Jorgensen

    Book Description

"The medicine of the new millennium."--Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words

Dr. Mehmet Oz, celebrated heart surgeon and co-founder of the Complementary Care Center at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, is spearheading the health-care revolution that is yielding powerful new healing tools that will forever change the way we think of medicine. In this ground-breaking book, he describes his pioneering work--combining cutting-edge Western medicine with such Eastern techniques as acupuncture and chi-gong, as well as such controversial therapies as hypnosis, music, massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and energy healing. The inspiring and affecting stories of his patients are the heart of this book--from the extraordinary discipline of Frank Torre, who used his professional sports training to "psych" himself into healing after heart transplant surgery, to the "impossible" recovery of blues great Johnny Copeland, who was roused from a seemingly impenetrable coma through the force of his own music. In recounting his patients' experiences, Dr. Oz forges a blueprint for the radical new medicine of the next millennium--drawing on the best from Eastern and Western therapies and empowering patients to become partners with doctors in promoting their own recovery.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An unexpected side effect.......2007-02-16

I rate this book very highly with relation to what it teaches regarding cardial care.
What also struck me is a reference to what he experienced in Turkey, were Dr. Oz spent a vacation as a child or teenager. He refers to this somewhat timidly.
Can you imagine: there was no toilet paper. It was explained to him, that Turkish people, like Indonesians and other Asian people refrain from rubbing an obnoxious substance into a tender skin with paper, which Western people have been led to believe represents cleaning, but rather prefer using water and their left hand.
People that use their right hand's middle finger to signal derision, don't know what they are signaling about. Dr. Oz mentions, that the Eastern method of personal hygiene also diminishes the survival rate of hemorrhoids.
So it would seem that the book promotes health of heart as well as of another , but less admired, part of the human anatomy. A double whammy so to speak.

3 out of 5 stars Not yet Synergy.......2006-11-07

Dr. Oz is, I guess, trying to be a complementary surgeon, and he does okay in his explanations of the typical complements i.e. yoga, music, but he is still a surgeon, and his belief in surgery comes through loud and clear. Just as the "YOU" books are deceptive in their attempt to woo the reader into believing this is a new approach to medicine. Alternative therapies were mainstream medicine long before Oz decided to be a revolutionary. Hard to read a book based on false premises. I much prefer the truth, even it sounds to some as being "too loving." Read Rayna Gangi, Deepak Chopra- let these guys go be surgeons.

5 out of 5 stars Heart on Heart!!.......2006-11-04

Great information and easy read. I learned more in one book than the other 5 I read on the heart and the things we can do to help heal. As a yoga instructor I will recommend this to my ailling students.

3 out of 5 stars The Heart Can Thrive on Positive Thoughts........2006-06-19

Dr. Oz, the heart wizard, is of Turkish descent and attempts to combine East and West traditions of healing during post-surgery. He is a heart surgeon located in New York City. First of all, he is searching for the elusive one universal healing endeavor. Some things we all need are recommended such as Love is a major healing force, as is religious faith in one God. He is of the opinion that modern medicine is not perfect. Nothing is perfect, not even beauty, he says.

Music can be healing or it can turn destructive if your favorite network plays exactly what you dislike the most, as mine is currently doing, as an irritant. Believe me, I have the emails to prove it is done on purpose just to make me hurt. But I push a button until that awful stuff is over, so it really doesn't fulfill the purpose they intend. There are devils on earth.

Pets can be a reason to live. Some are actual life savers for their owners. The purpose of healing is to bring us in harmony with ourselves. Sounds like Depock Chopra.

Our minds and emotions affect our immune systems. Depression, loneliness, and stress (brains and bodies) can cause death. Emotions are not only in our heads but affect all of our body cells. All cells are geared to know what each is supposed to do, independent of messages from the brain.

He talked about the Greek myth of Psyche and Cupid, god of Love. She needed the knife so as to be armed to deal with consequences. Who knows when an ardent lover will turn violent.

    5 out of 5 stars A Good Combination.......2006-02-23

The view that all types of medicine (western and eastern) working together makes sense. This book seems to encorage a balance between both. I enjoyed it.

I bought this books soon after it came out as I lived in the city the author had his coffee shop in. As his shop was a destination, just for the cheesecake, it was a no brainer to buy the book. I spent several months working my way through all the baked and baked-flavored cheesecakes and can attest to the quality of all the recipes. My favorite recipe is 'The Heavy One' followed by the pumpkin cheesecake.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you have something like a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer to beat the cream cheese with. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Giants are a very unusual breed and they take an unusual owner. We have two Giants and this book is right on the money. It should be required reading for anyone thinking about adding a Giant to their home. These dogs are powerful, stubborn, loving and loyal. Not everyone can be a successful Giant owner and that is why so many of these dogs end up in rescue.

Giant Schnauzers by Joe Stahlkuppe clearly describes these wonderful dogs and their needs. If you are thinking about purchasing a Giant, please read this book.

          Book Description

Cutting an impression of imposing power and unmistakable style, the Giant Schnauzer is revered as a bold and dependable guard dog, an adaptable working dog and a good-natured, handsome family dog. One of Germany's many auspicious contributions to the dog world, the Schnauzers, of which the Giant is the largest, possess distinctive facial furnishings, a blunt-wedged muzzle and an alert, reliable temperament. For the family desiring a protector and companion, the Giant Schnauzer ranks among the best possible choices.

Among the top breeders of working dogs in the US is author Barbara J. Andrews, who has written insightful yet concise chapters on the breed's history, characteristics and the breed standard, with the assistance of the world's top Schnauzer breeder Sylvia Hammarstrom of the famous Skansen kennels in California. This book also details the selection of a puppy, rearing, training and feeding the puppy, crate-training, home safety and much more. Additionally, a lavishly illustrated chapter on preventive healthcare by Dr. Lowell Ackerman provides up-to-date accurate information on inoculations, parasite control, selecting a veterinarian and other topics vital to the ownership of a healthy pure-bred dog. Readers will enjoy learning about the various activities in which the Giant Schnauzer excels, from farm work and protection work to dog shows, agility trials and obedience events.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful but hard to duplicate.......2006-08-25

I should have realized that a book by Cheryl Potter would focus on her yarns -- which are stunning, but quite expensive. The book offers some beautiful designs, but does a good job of convincing you that mixing types of yarns requires a lot of experimentation and can be prone to much disappointment. Of course, they want you to use the ones that they list. But now I'm a bit wary of using the yarns I have instead of the ones they're selling. I'll probably get over this and try my own combinations, since the end results ARE very enticing! But I'll have to keep looking for a more generic discussion of how to approach mixing yarns, both from the standpoint of how they look and also how to adapt gauge, needle size, etc. -- this one doesn't do that.

Blue Jacket (ca. 1743-ca. 1808), or Waweyapiersenwaw, was the galvanizing force behind an intertribal confederacy of unparalleled scope that fought a long and bloody war against white encroachments into the Shawnees' homeland in the Ohio River Valley. Blue Jacket was an astute strategist and diplomat who, though courted by American and British leaders, remained a staunch defender of the Shawnees' independence and territory. In this arresting and controversial account, John Sugden depicts the most influential Native American leader of his time. John Sugden is an independent scholar and a former associate editor of Oxford University Press's American National Biography project. His books include Tecumseh: A Life, winner of the Society for Military History Distinguished Book Award.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Book, But Based on Scant Material.......2002-12-20

Sugden's third book on the Shawnee tribe (Tecumseh's Last Stand and Tecumseh: A Life being the other two) is a competent piece of historical writing, but is, in my view, the weakest of the three. Sugden does a fairly good job of debunking the belief that Blue Jacket was a white man, presenting a variety of materials to counter the dubious evidence usually cited by those who support this contention. While diehard believers will not be convinced, Sugden will likely influence those who do not cling to this old (and widely accepted) tale.

As for the bulk of the book, Sugden does a fair job of collecting the bits and pieces of Blue Jacket's history and weaving them into a readable narrative. The difficulty he (or anyone in the future who wishes to explore Blue Jacket's life) faces is that there is too little material available to produce a thorough biography of this Shawnee. Compared to other Shawnees of the same time frame such as Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa (the Prophet), or even Black Hoof, there is little in the historical record about Blue Jacket, certainly when one is attempting to write a full-length biography.

Perhaps if Sugden had published this as an article (or series thereof) or incorporated Blue Jacket's story within the framework of a larger tribal or regional history, the holes in Blue Jacket's history would be less gaping. However, the lack of source material forces Sugden to draw conclusions and make some speculations based on suspect evidence and assumptions. For example, little is known about Blue Jacket before the American Revolution. Sugden uses the few sources available from the American colonial period, but is forced to fill in holes with generalizations about what is known about the Shawnee and their neighbors. This weakens the biography because Blue Jacket the individual is often lost in these generalities.

On the positive side, Sugden presents, to this point, the most complete biography of Blue Jacket. The only other widely available biography is Allan Eckert's: Blue Jacket: War Chief of the Shawnees, which, while more vibrant and perhaps better written, is subject to broad speculation by the author, fosters the highly suspect Swearingen (captive white) connection, and is more literature than history. Therefore, Sugden's book is currently the best if one wishes to learn about the historical Blue Jacket. In all fairness to the author, I am not convinced that a better book on the subject is achieveable, which is a shame because Blue Jacket may never achieve the historical status of contemporaries such as Tecumseh or Little Turtle; a place he richly deserves.

It tried to like this book, but I couldn't. This guy is just not a very good writer. He takes a very exciting period of history and makes it not so exciting. He is good at presenting facts (though some are a little shaky), but not so good at writing a story based on the facts. There are better writers dealing with this time period.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting, authoritative Native American biography........2001-03-03

Blue Jacket is an exciting authoritative biography of a Shawnee war chief of great military, diplomatic, strategic and political achievements. Compared with other Native American leaders such as Red Cloud, Geronimo, Crazy Horse, and Sitting Bull, Blue Jacket, or Waweyapiersenwaw is portrayed as a Shawnee patriot and defender of his tribe's Ohio River territory.Unafraid to utilize white and mixed blood connections(he married two wives of white or mixed Native American/white blood), Blue Jacket provided inspiration and a role model for the famous Tecumseh in his later years. Covering an estimated lifespan from 1743 to 1808, the biography details a fully human portrait of Blue Jacket with fine details drawn from a variety of close sources.

Many examples of Blue Jacket's skill and astuteness are given. The precarious position of the Shawnees, between the British, the French, and enemy tribes is well documented. A reputation for handling disagreements among allies also is characteristic of Blue Jacket. Respected by Native Americans and Europeans alike, Blue Jacket's conduct throughout his life was characterized by a balance of abilities, traditional religion, warring and hunting skills, and also an ability to prosper from the additions of white culture. An example of an attempt to analyze Blue Jacket's political support of Tecumseh and the Prophet is quoted: "And so in the early days of the movement of Tecumseh and the Prophet, Blue Jacket illustrated its capacity to attract differently minded men and women, people who saw advantages in one way or another.Blue Jacket probably saw the sense in much of what the Prophet said, but we cannot suppose that these arguments were sufficient inducements for the most sophisticated of all Shawnees. We can, however, only guess at his motives. We know he was ambitious; he always had been. We know, too, that he was isolated, living apart from the center of Shawnee affairs in Ohio and seldom attending their tribal council. The most likely explanation of his interest in the Prophet is that he saw in him a way to recover influence and power. It was his final attempt to challenge the supremacy of Black Hoof and other old Meckoche rivals (pp. 241-242)."

The history of the Shawnee and other Native American tribes in the East is riddled with blood and lost ground. However, this biography of Blue Jacket testifies to a man who straddled cultures and achieved a level of both success and bitterness. Most interesting of all is the legacy of blood that he fathered, traced in meticulous detail by authentic sources by author Sugden. Although it may suffer from the loss of a Native American voice, Blue Jacket presents a piecing together of a lost portrait, powerful and sure. It provides a missing piece of history. "Today, most people's perception of American Indian armed resistance, itself only part of a complicated history, is extremely limited. It is the warriors of another age who are remembered - men of the later nineteenth century, whose fame has benefited from the growth of the popular press, the cinema, and improved communications. Yet Blue Jacket's followers accounted for more American enemies in serious battle than the forces of Cochise, Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and Geronimo put together, and his vision of intertribal unity was much keener and more sophisticated. Of course, we are all products of our own times, but when the long roll of Indian notables is called, surely the name of Waweyapiersenwaw, or Blue Jacket, deserves to find its place. (pp.263-64)."

3 out of 5 stars Wanted to like it but found it tough going........2000-10-17

To my knowledge this is only the third Shawnee that anyone has written a book about, Tecumseh and the Prophet being the other two. An interesting time period, but I found myself yawning thru this rendition of it. Perhaps there was just too little data for the author to work with. After reading the book, Blue Jacket still seems a shadowy figure, a block of wood, a carved face on a totem pole. The author gets an A+ for research for all I know, but I wish he had found something in this story that had some charm, some mystery, or some semblence of personality.
