Jeffery Deaver's Garden of Beasts introduces anti-hero Paul Schumann, a notorious rubout man for the New York Mafia known for his cold and professional approach to his job. But the jig is up when he is duped by high-ranking feds who give him a choice--prison or one more impossible job: assassinate the man who's running Hitler's plan for rearming Germany. The hard-nosed German-American lands on the streets of Berlin where immediately the best-laid plans of the United States Government go awry. Schumman finds himself in a city living in fear, tracked by Berlin's best homicide detective. As the intricate chase wears on, both men will discover that the greatest evil is the ascendant Nazi party.
Deaver's novel, equal parts noir thriller and historical extrapolation, is a page-turner that offers a twisting visceral experience of the tension in Berlin during that fateful summer. He draws sympathetic portraits of everyday Germans caught between duty to country and their consciences. Into this mix, Deaver drops his coldly dangerous hitman who brawls with brownshirts, chums with Olympic athletes, collaborates with criminals, fraternizes with poets, and discovers the hero inside his hardened soul. --Jeremy Pugh
Amazon.com Interview
When starting a new book by author Jeffery Deaver, expect to have the wool pulled over your eyes. His plots twist and turn and juke and jive like no others, never ending as expected and always including a jaw-dropping plot development. His latest effort, Garden of Beasts, is no exception. Amazon.com caught up with Deaver to discuss plotting, characters, and the perils of soap opera acting.
Book Description
In the most ingenious and provocative thriller yet from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Jeffery Deaver, a conscience-plagued mobster turned government hitman struggles to find his moral compass amid rampant treachery and betrayal in 1936 Berlin.
Paul Schumann, a German American living in New York City in 1936, is a mobster hitman known as much for his brilliant tactics as for taking only "righteous" assignments. But then Paul gets caught. And the arresting officer offers him a stark choice: prison or covert government service. Paul is asked to pose as a journalist covering the summer Olympics taking place in Berlin. He's to hunt down and kill Reinhard Ernst -- the ruthless architect of Hitler's clandestine rearmament. If successful, Paul will be pardoned and given the financial means to go legit; if he refuses the job, his fate will be Sing Sing and the electric chair.
Paul travels to Germany, takes a room in a boardinghouse near the Tiergarten -- the huge park in central Berlin but also, literally, the "Garden of Beasts" -- and begins his hunt. In classic Deaver fashion, the next forty-eight hours are a feverish cat-and-mouse chase, as Paul stalks Ernst through Berlin while a dogged Berlin police officer and the entire Third Reich apparatus search frantically for the American.
Garden of Beasts is packed with fascinating period detail and features a cast of perfectly realized locals, Olympic athletes and senior Nazi officials -- some real, some fictional. With hairpin plot twists, the reigning "master of ticking-bomb suspense" (People) plumbs the nerve-jangling paranoia of prewar Berlin and steers the story to a breathtaking and wholly unpredictable ending.

3.5 stars for this average Deaver.......2007-08-23
No spoilers
I'm a big Deaver and have thoroughly enjoyed every book I've ever read by him. I read this book after finishing the Lincoln Rhyme series because those books have been among my favorite reads of the genre in recent memory. I've read a few of Deaver's other stand-alone books and enjoyed them so I figured this one would be just as good.
While this book was enjoyable and I got into in enough to finish it as quickly as usual, it wasn't as great of a novel as any in the Rhyme series or his other stand-alones (like Blue Nowhere, which is great). Basically, the best advice is that if you like Deaver's other stuff and want something else to read by him, then you'll enjoy this book just enough to make it a worthwhile read. However, if you're new to Deaver, go for the gold and read, in order, the Lincoln Rhyme series.
Stalking The Stalker -- Good Page Turning Thriller.......2007-07-08
Paul Schumann, an American hit man, is given a choice: face Tom Dewey or face the Nazis. Not surprisingly (since it would be a boring book otherwise) he chooses to undertake a clandestine mission to assassinate Reinhart Ernst, a high ranking Nazi official in charge of rearmament.
Along the way his cover is compromised, and he is tracked not only the Gestapo, but the German police.
Without going into great detail on the plot points, suffice it to say that there are a number of twists and turns in the plot, and most of the canidates are multi-dimensional. The Nazis have their good points and the "good guys" have their bad points.
When reading this book, I kept wondering -- would Paul go through with his mission and what would happen to the characters along the way -- not just the main characters, but the supporting roles.
Also I'll admit that the ending wasn't what I expected.
Well worth a read.
Decent Stand Alone.......2007-02-20
A departure from the Lincoln Rhyme series, Garden of Beasts holds its own. An interesting story about a hitman in Berlin at the beginning of World War II. Not as great as Lincoln Rhyme, but I like Deaver's style.
Garden of Beasts.......2007-01-13
I loved this novel. Well written and kept you on edge.
Brownshirts.......2007-01-06
This compelling murder mystery is also a guide to history as it depicts the rise to power of the Brownshirts in 1929 Munich. Any one who has been to Munich will recognize actual sections of the city. The characters are sympathetic and more fully developed than the cast of most murder mysteries.
Customer Reviews:
I envy all those people who havent yet read this book!.......2005-12-26
This was a book I picked up at my college library simply because there was no other book available. As is obvious I was least interested and was not even sure I wanted to finish reading the book. Fate it seems is not without a sense of irony - I simply fell in love with it and have been craving for more. I finished reading the book in no time even though it was exam time. This book is very atypical. You are to expect the unexpected. The story is set in prehistoric times - at the times of the last neanderthal man. The book takes you through the life of a confident (or arrogant) warrior who braves the odds to save his pride and loved ones by migrating to the north to join his long lost part of his tribe. The description of the wild landscape and magic conjured is beautiful.
If you like myths and love to be lost in nature long before the smallheads (read as modern man) destroyed it this is the book for you.
Thanks to Attanasio for such great work!
I can't quite put my finger on it..........2003-11-01
This story is just so...haunting. Who is the hero? The bad guy?Things were so clear at the start but...who is to say what is right and wrong.
The author really does a good job of keeping you off balance with all of the twists and moral judgements.
Typical for Attanasio: Full of Surprises.......1996-10-09
Having read a lot of "early man" novels, like JeanAuel's Clan of the Cave Bear, I was excited to seeAttanasio was taking a turn, but I forgot to expect the unexpected! Attanasio turns the predictable into the surprising in this novel as in his others. The Ghost Dancer is not really the antagonist. In fact, he is perhaps the most sympathic of characters, despite his supernormal abilities! The more normal humans take the roles of good and evil, while the Ghost Dancer himself is the plot. He is the last of his kind, and he seeks the immortality due his species, but his quest brings him closer and closer to the humans he fears and hates. Only a human girl can help him reach his destination, and their trek together teaches her that there is a morality above the survival of the species. Her brother and her protector track the Ghost Dancer and the girl, always dreading the worst. Not until they reach the end of their resources do they learn that their quest to rescue the girl has changed into a battle to defend the Ghost Dancer against the legendary hunter who eliminated so many of the Dancer's people. Is this a novel about Neanderthal vs Cro-Magnon? Is it a novel about supernatural powers inhabiting and lending strength to cave men? Or is it a novel about learning to understand others in a world where all others are strange and threatening. The relevance to life in today's world is indirect but substantial. This novel challenges and entertains, entrances and horrifies, reassures and rewards. It shows us how a great novelist can keep us questioning and changing, until the plot resolution finally shows what he can really do to bend your mind!

Categorize, medicate and ignore real issues.......2007-09-03
This book reads like a school psychologist wrote it whose goal is NOT to help our children but to make the child calm down for the teacher and the rest of the kids in class. It's not for parents, especially if you are not for medicating your child. I have read numerous books on Asperger's and this one is NOT on my list as a must see.
Look for information that talks about WHY the child is having the behaviors or anticedents to behaviors and how to help the child DEAL with the behaviors: Tony Attwood, Carol Grey, Michelle Garcia Winner, and anything you can find on sensory isues which can be a HUGE reason for many of your child's symptoms. Anyone that TREATS THE BEHAVIOR is NOT TREATING THE CHILD but MAKING THEIR LIFE EASIER.
Can't I give it more stars?.......2007-02-05
I'd give it a ten, no doubt about that. This book, along with the Oasis Guide to AS have a permanent spot on my bookshelf. Actually, it is always laying around for me to pick up and look at again and again.
I love the practical language suggestions-
I'm a problem solver, and I'm here to help.
Let it go.
Move on.
Just the kind of language a child with AS can understand.
The strategies suggested in the book are overwhelming- at first. I found that our son has quickly learned ways to adapt and control his outbursts. I just wish I had known about this book five years ago!
Well worth any amount of money, and definately recommended!
Language Skills are a Prerequisite.......2006-08-12
This whole book is based on the assumption that your child has very developed language skills. Here's a quote from the introduction on page 6, "However, those children who do not have at least average language and intellectual ability will have more difficulty understanding the language-based solutions that form the basis of our program."
Why was this important fact excluded from the front cover, back cover, or book description? I had to buy the book to find out that this form of therapy wouldn't work for my child. I was really disappointed.
Excellent Book for Parents of an Asperger's Child.......2006-06-14
The book has some really fabulous suggestions for parents of Asperger's children. How to calm your child, how to help you child make friends, how to stay on topic and have a give and take conversation. The section on personal space and the suggestion of using "conversation feet" makes this book an excellent choice. The suggestions are really simple, along the vein of: Hey why didn't I think of that. I highly recommend this book as it also gives parents insight into what makes their Asperger's child tick.
Parenting Your Asperger Child Best Book I have found!.......2006-03-20
I purchased this book because I was looking for a few ideas for assisting my son and got a lot more than I had even hoped for. This book gives an overview of the many types of asperger traits and how these traits might play out in real life. For instance, my son is an emotional high anxiety Aspie, and this book provides actual type conversations with each type of asperger child. I found the conversations helpful because they taught me the best method of asking questions and of assisting my son to a less emotional state.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing more directed information. Absolutely wonderful book; easy to read and comprehend.

Don't waste your money.......2007-09-29
there were a few good recipes, but other than that, a waste of money. Not only were alot of the recipes not "common" or even appitizing, but the printing was very bad. In the middle of the book, they duplicated about 20 prior pages and then left out about 30 additional pages. I was so upset, I contacted the supplier. They did give me my money back, but I was very disappointed. there are a million other books to get if you're looking for a candy making book. don't buy this one.
As fun to look at as it is to use.......2007-06-02
I love this book! It has delectable candies in it that I've never seen elsewhere, such as Golden Heart Passion Pops, red heart-shaped lollipops with gold flecks. They're keyed to seasons and holidays, so you have ways to orient yourself and choose which ones to make. My five-year-old son pores over this book for hours, commenting on the candies and planning which ones to make. It's really gotten him involved in cooking, and it's fun for both of us. The recipes vary from quick & easy to quite long, but even the long ones are spelled out very clearly, with helpful suggestions about keeping the candy, who will like it, and so forth. I'm actually buying my second copy of this book because we spilled water all over the first. This book is a treat in itself. (I want to add that I have no connection to the author or publisher!)
From marshmallow peeps for Easter to Christmas Ribbon Candy and hand-formed Chocolate Leaves for Thanksgiving.......2007-01-07
From marshmallow peeps for Easter to Christmas Ribbon Candy and hand-formed Chocolate Leaves for Thanksgiving, HOLIDAY CANDY & CONFECTIONS: SWEET TREATS ALL YEAR LONG is a guide which may have missed our December issue, but which holds importance and value far beyond a single season. Each recipe offers a full-page facing page photo of the completed item, and each recipe teaches basic tricks of the candy-making trade, from tempering and using dry ice on molds to choosing a special type of chocolate to produce a polished finish, or using a leaf-shaped cookie cutter on jelly to make leaves. If you've made candy before you're used to one-dimension cookbooks which either offer recipes alone or go into great detail on advanced techniques: this one offers a bit of both and is far above most in ease of use and polished results.

I was hoping for more.......2002-04-22
While this book had many photos of different breeds, I was surprised at the omissions. I had hoped to see a Fila Brasilero, Havanese, Dogue de Bordeaux and a Neapolitan Mastiff. The Coonhounds, both the red and black and tan were also missing. There was no mention of the American Eskimo dog. The picture of the Rhodesian Ridgeback did not show the ridge that they are so famous for. The information about the dogs contradicted other books and my own experience. I was disappointed in this book.
Pretty Good..........2002-04-18
I've had this book for a few years, and a lot of the imformation on the breeds, such as the kennel club recognition and key characteristics are great. The histories though seem to be disputed between the author of this book and the AKC Dog book and other authors of all-breed dog books.
All in all, a pleasure to read and view the illustrations and maps of where the different breeds originated.
Great Book, beautiful pictures.......2001-03-23
I thought this book was a good book. It gave a lot of info, though it could have given more. Lots of the pictures were good pictures, but the picture of the King Charles Spaniel for instance made it look bad, the fur was all ruffed up and it was hunched up, it just didn't look good! most of the pictures and information was pretty good. I would recomend this book for people that are interested in dogs, and information about different kinds of dogs. Just one more thing.... it doesn't give pictures of all the dogs, there are a couple that just have names and info, no picture but i would say 97% of them had pictures, so ya, i would buy this book!

I haven't found a better book about dog breeds yet. The information is accurate, the pictures are beautiful and the price makes it affordable for everyone.
Book Description
With over 200,000 copies sold to date, everyone agrees that "the 'ultimate' in the subtitle is not an exaggeration" (Minneapolis Star Tribune). Legacy of the Dog has been established as the reference book for potential dog owners, breeders, and people who are just plain crazy for dogs. Revised and updated, with many new breeds rarely seen outside their country of origin, it is an invaluable reference. Seven standard categories are covered, with each breed shown alphabetically within, for a total of 195 breeds. Each breed's description includes a brief history, key characteristics, care and exercise requirements, and tips on training puppies. Tetsu Yamazaki's photographs are exceptional not only for their careful emphasis on the particularity of the different breeds, but also for capturing the individual spirit of each dog. A treasure trove of photography and a wealth of information, here's a book for canine owners guaranteed to be the most dog-eared one on the shelf.

Excellent revision.......2007-01-03
This is a great all breed dog book. The pictures are good, there is a nice selection of breeds and the information is generally accurate, at least for the dogs I know.
Brilliant Book - Well Worth Having.......2006-03-11
This book is one of the best of its type, Mr. Yamazaki and Mr. Kojima should be congratulated for all the work that they have put into it. The photography is excellent and the whole book is beautifully presented. I may be a little biased as l own the brown Bearded Collie pictured in the book but l think that the book really blows away other similiar books about dogs on the market. A must have if you are looking at purchasing a puppy / dog.
Book Description
Legacy of the Dog is the finest, most comprehensive photographic guide to dog breeds ever published. Legacy of the Dog.......2004-06-10
Wonderful; very informative. Very useful!!!
Irish Terrier!!!.......2003-02-19
Well, the cover did it for me, a beautiful example of the breed I own and love, the Irish Terrier. Great book, great photos, good listing of many non-AKC breeds such as the Cesky Terrier and Smoushound and many others.
Worth a buy!
Good general guide.......2002-08-18
This book contains fantastic photographs and brief write-ups of 200 breeds of dogs. I would have liked more information on each breed, especially info on temperament. The photos are top-notch, however, beautifully done. Definitely a good, though pricy, general guide to review when you are considering what kind of dog to buy.
Legacy of the Dog: The Ultimate Illustrated Guide.......2002-03-25
This is a great book on breeds. Although, I believe that
the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs was much more helpful in
my research on the breeds. Even though Legacy of the Dog has
200 breeds, I believe the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs tells
you more of how the breed acts, and the amount of exercise the dog needs and energy they have, while the Legacy of Dogs seems to more tell you where the breed comes from and how they appear... It is a great book, but when compared.... It comes in second in my dog breed collection.
I love this book!.......2002-03-18
I bought this book because I had a gift certificate and had to use it up. Boy was I glad that I bought this!
This book has so many good pictures of so many different breeds, it is wonderful. There is the common breeds like the Golden Retriever and the Labrador and than there's the uncommon ones like the Neopolitan Mastiff and the Koohikerhondje. If you like dogs or want to do some resaerch, this book has alot of good info.
It is great!

Dog Breeds of the World.......2000-07-14
Although Dog Breeds of the World is not as widely publicized (or as expensive!) as some other breed books, it is one of the best that I have seen. It has accurate information about history, health and temperament, as well as several good pictures of each breed. Best of all, it has a display box for each breed that summarizes exercise, temperament, grooming and feeding needs, with descriptions like "delightfully docile" temperament (for the Newfoundland). The book comes in several sizes, each with the same pictures and text. Dog Breeds of the World is the smallest version, fine unless you need larger print. The Complete Encyclopedia of Pedigree Dogs is a coffee-table-size version. The Complete Dog Book includes not only the breed information and pictures found in the other two, but also some very helpful general information about nutrition, health care, training, grooming, choosing a dog, and breeding. (I would have liked a somewhat stronger statement recommending against breeding, but I admit that sometimes a low-key approach works best.) Although the book is British, and therefore uses British measurements, Stockman is good to us non-Brits and translates dog heights and weights into U.S. terminology as well. He doesn't try to include every breed around, but I found all the common U.S. breeds, as well as many that are not so familiar. All in all, this is likely to remain one of my favorite dog breed books.

The Story of the Steiff Teddy Bear: An Illustrated History from 1902
ASIN: 3893659544 |
Book Description
A striking needlework image of the Taj Mahal, a framed picture featuring an elephant wearing a brightly-hued rug, a footstool adorned with 2 embroidered peacocks: these cross-stitch projects capture all the heat and color of India. The lustrous patterns decorate cushions, box lids, bookmarks, cards, bell pulls, bags, and more. Intricate motifs, beautiful beadwork, and lavish metallic threads adorn many of the designs, resulting in ornate and sumptuous items that are a pleasure to create and to own.

India cross-stitch design book review.......2007-10-09
There are several designs in this book that I would like to make. The charts are a little small, and the colours are so similar that it is sometimes hard to see the contrast. I changed lots of the colours but I love the basic designs. Projects of different sizes for every taste.
very beautiful, for the advanced stitcher.......2007-07-30
I had high hopes for this book, and it delivered some. The designs are beautiful, but most of them quite large and for the very advanced stitcher. If you have a love for India and lots of time on your hands, this one is for you!
Beautiful Indian Designs.......2005-02-25
This is one of my absolute favorite cross stitching books. I have always loved Indian arts, and this book did not dissappoint me. The charts are beautiful, and there is a wonderful variety of projects, large and small. I feel it was worth every penny I spent for it. You can make beautiful, small keepsakes and gifts or you can make intricate samplers, pictures, pillow covers, keychains, purses, and wall hangings. Some projects are relatively quick to make, and others take longer. I absolutely love the floral and paisley motifs. There are some other projects that require beading, but they are very beautiful. The only thing I found a little cumbersome is the threads are listed as Anchor only, and I only have access to DMC threads where I live. Also, the color conversion chart at the end of the book does not list all of the colors used. Some of the Anchor threads do not have a DMC equivalent, so I ordered a few colors online. If you aren't very picky like I am, you might be satisfied to just look at the pictures and choose a color that is close to the picture. The author did a wonderful job with this compilation of Indian art as cross stitch. She borrowed designs from Indian archetecture, metal work, pottery, rugs, and clothing. This is by far one of my favorite cross stitch books.

Book Description
During the last two decades, the number of anthropologists conducting research in the Middle East has increased considerably. Together they have produced an abundance of valuable studies, often based on prolonged periods of ethnographic fieldwork. This bibliography offers a comprehensive survey of their results published between 1965 and 1987. It refers to studies published in English, French and German. Geographically, the bibliography covers the area from Mauritania in the West to Afghanistan in the East, and from Turkey in the North to the Arab Peninsula and Northern Sudan in the South. The majority of studies inserted has been written by anthropologists. Besides, a considerable number of studies related to anthropology, but published by non-anthropologists, has been integrated as well. The majority of the monographs and volumes has been annotated.
