Customer Reviews:
The ghosts come out to play while the plot thickens........2001-04-17
An apparent clue in the controversial missing girl case that Ethan Proctor's Black Oak took on leads to England and a unique haunting. What Proctor began to suspect in 'Episode' 2: The Hush of Dark Wings is confirmed here. Dark forces of some kind have marked him, but for what? The story arc plot grows thicker, the red herrings swarm, and the whole things builds to a nifty sword fight between man and ghost. Black Oak 'Episode' 3: Winter Knight is yet another delightfully creepy tale that will leave you begging for the next series entry.
Charles Grant = Underrated.......2000-06-02
Charles Grant is the most underrated writer in the horror fantasy/sci-fi genre. His body of work is ubiquitous, ranging from hard core horror to subtle dark fantasy. Winter Knight was a pleasure to read, and the Black Oak series is the most productive series going. "Hunting Ground," the forthcoming installment in the series, should prove to be another fine read.
Fun, quick read.......2000-03-21
Let's face it: this Black Oak series is just plain fun! GENESIS and THE HUSH OF DARK WINGS start out the series. Grant introduces us to Ethan Proctor, the brooding but brilliant leader of Black Oak Security. If there is a creepy twist, Proctor and company are sure to find it!
WINTER KNIGHT finds Proctor in the quaint town of Pludbury, Englad. The townsfolk readily accept the legend of one of the town's forefathers who will grant them their deepest desires in exchange for their souls. Proctor, of course, digs and digs to discover the mystery of the resident ghost.
This series is imaginative with Grant's patented writing. If you are new to Grant, these are an excellent way to get an idea of the depth of his writing. Besides, each is so much fun to read that you certainly won't regret the investment!
black oak, winter knight.......1999-11-27
The book was wonderfull just like his past books in this series. This book is not only thrilling to read but also keeps his readers wanting more, which in my case. Can't wait for the next one to come!
Grant's best so far in the Black Oak series.......1999-09-22
While Black Oak #1, Genesis, was an intriguing introduction, and Black #2 was a bit confusing, I have to admit that I enjoyed Winter Knight the most. Clear, spooky, and more inspired.

I found myself..........2007-10-10
I couldn't believe the resemblences I found in this book.
At 51, I have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, as is my Son of 17.
Liane Willey could be my twin, with all she went through. I wasn't too sure if I had written the book. Anyone needing validation should read this book. It covers growing in all aspects of Asperger's. Childhood "fits" and College idiosyncracies. A great read for any "Aspie"or anyone with a suspision of "Aspies". (Asperger's Syndrome)[[ASIN:1853027499 Pretending to Be Normal: Living With Asperger's Syndrome]
I love this book!.......2007-10-08
This was the first book on Asperger's Syndrome that I read. I loved it and still often go back to it and reread sections. It is very well-written, logical, engaging, and informative. I enjoy autobiographical books about people living with challenges and this one really holds my attention. I read it just before I was "officially" diagnosed with AS and I was so touched by what Liane shared and could identify with so much of it. It has really been a blessing to me. Pretending to Be Normal: Living With Asperger's Syndrome
Good description of Aspergers.......2007-10-05
This book is able to communicate what it's like to have Asperger's, from a whole-life perspective, and generally portrays it as "different" but not necessarily "worse". Has a few minor issues that a good editor would have caught, but very readable. I found it comforting, after some of the more clinical books on the subject.
The Way We Are.......2007-09-13
This book contains the autobiography of Liane Holliday Willey, a victim of Asperger's Syndrome, a neuro-developmental disorder within the Autism Spectrum. The author relates her struggles to understand the social world and to understand why she seemed to have these struggles no one else around her seemed to have until she received a diagnosis of Asperger's for her own daughter. She claims reading the description of the disorder turned on a lightbulb in her head and she understood what she had been fighting all her life.
I understand and relate. My own experiences with the disorder differ from hers however, like her, I did not discover a name for the problem until well into adulthood -- and it was indeed like a lightbulb being turned on and everything could be seen for what it was.
I recommend this book to anyone that struggled in childhood to make and keep friends -- and anyone who knows someone that went through that battle or is going through that battle now. Read this. Everything then makes sense.
Asperger's and Girls
The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
Eye opening, jaw dropping.......2007-08-02
Liane Holliday brings you into the inner world of the Asperger Syndrome mind. Through out this book, she provides through her eloquent writing, the exact thought process of the Aspie child, adolescent and adult. It is absolutely eye opening, jaw dropping stuff. My heart filled with compassion, uderstanding, and my head filled with extreme knowledge. After raising an undiagnosed Aspie son, and the same son is now an adult, I am filled with pure understanding thanks to Liane. I "saw" my son in practically every page of this book. Thank you Liane for a superb book. I think my son and I are now headed to a full, loving, fun relationship, (instead of the dysfunctional one we are now in), Thanks to you!!

Restaurant staff meals are a lot like family meals. In fact, most staffs call it exactly that--the family meal. And the challenges are the same: how to please the palates of people who know precisely what they like, and how to do it in a time- and cost-effective way. In this hefty volume (433 pages of recipes!), David Waltuck, chef and owner of Chanterelle, the award-winning, critically acclaimed restaurant in New York City, shares his solutions to this universal quandary.
The family meal at Chanterelle is a chance for the staff to "take an enjoyable and sociable break from their hectic schedule." Just like at home, they relax, "schmooze," and get to know each other. The key, of course, is that no one is slaving away in the kitchen. Whatever they eat must be made in advance, with minimum fuss, and left to simmer, braise, bake, or roast, until they're ready for it. A number of people share the responsibility for feeding the crew, and the diverse menu reflects the diversity of the staff. From Chicken Soup with Fresh Herbs and Homemade Matzoh Balls to Meat Loaf, Italian Style, to Chicken with Olives and Preserved Lemons to Chanterelle's Breakfast Waffles, these recipes are for quintessential comfort food. Restaurant work is physical, so portions must be ample and provide the energy everyone needs to work the next shift. The meals should be flavorful and interesting but appeal to a broad range of eaters. Every one of these extraordinary recipes delivers, from the luxurious Butternut Squash and Bourbon Soup and the tender, braised Lamb Shanks with Tomato and Rosemary to the nut-packed, mildly spicy Chicken with Cashews and the easily elegant Cream Cheese Pound Cake. These recipes can be put together quickly and easily and are either ready in a flash or can be left to cook unattended. There are a few more-elaborate recipes, for celebrations, perhaps, that require a little extra TLC, but between the easy-to-follow instructions and the useful tips (how to clean squid, saving a separated butter sauce, testing fish for doneness, and more), your family and your guests will be well fed--and you will be the hero. Just like the Chanterelle staff sweatshirt says, "Good food and plenty of it." --Leora Y. Bloom
Book Description
It's the other menu at Chanterelle, New York's dazzling four-star restaurant. Customers eat foie gras and truffles. The staff eats Venison Chili with Red Beans. Customers swoon over the signature seafood sausage. The staff, elbows on the table, cheerfully tucks into Lamb Shanks with Tomato and Rosemary. Of all the great restaurants in New York, Chanterelle serves the finest staff meals--nothing fancy, just delicious home-style peasant and bourgeois dishes. And here they are, in Staff Meals from Chanterelle.
In 200 recipes, Chanterelle's chef, David Waltuck, brings the superb culinary insights and techniques befitting one of America's best chefs (Gourmet) to the delectable stews, pasta dishes, roasts, curries, one-pot meals, and blue plate specials that have made families happy forever. Outstanding yet easy-to-make, these are dishes for home cooking and entertaining alike, including Fish Fillets with Garlic and Ginger, Thai Duck Curry, Sauteed Pork Chops with Sauce Charcutiere, and the most requested dish of all, David's Famous Fried Chicken with Creamed Spinach and Herbed Biscuits. Tips throughout put cooks in the hands of a four-star teacher, from the best way to boil a potato (uncut and in its jacket) to shaping hot, oven-fresh tuiles into sophisticated dessert cups.

Comfort food with attitude.......2007-05-16
With several shelves full of cookbooks to choose from, this is the one that I pull down when I need some inspiration for good, hearty, tasty, basic foods that are easy to prepare. This is my most used cookbook, and everything I've made from it has turned out well. Pop culture cookbooks come and go but this classic stands the test of time. Highly recommended.
Eclectic and delicious dishes.......2007-02-25
This is my favorite go-to cookbook for a weekend meal when I am not craving any particular cuisine and just want to try something new. The chatter is lively, and the recipes fun to cook, both reducing well and expanding to suit a bigger crowd. While the dishes do not reflect a "pure" ethnic sensibility, the blending of flavors and seasonings lead to delicious results sometimes even exciting. I return to many of these recipes again and again. My (spoiled) husband who sometimes doesn't know what he is eating but certainly knows if he likes it, is a big fan of this cookbook.
one of my desert-island cookbooks.......2006-12-07
When we moved last year, it was one of 5 cookbooks I packed in my suitcase to use in our temporary apartment. It's chock full of great recipes for American classics, but done in a way that appeals to people who've gone beyond Campbell's soup casseroles. A number of easy ethnic recipes rounds out the mix.
wonderful cookbook.......2006-11-10
I love cookbooks and this is one of the best I have ever read or used. It is both a good cookbook and a good read, and most recipes are ones you will use. I am so impressed that I am giving it to several good cooks as a Christmas present.
Tribecca Cooking.......2006-11-07
This is the cookbook I have been waiting for for many years. It is supberb, down to earth cooking and it is so well set out that even an occasional cook can follow it and get wonderful results. I would recommend this to any one who likes excellent eating. Every time I look at it I want to go back to Chantarelle for another great eating experience

Hi.
I'm getting a pom soon and this book seems really nice for a new owner. I can't wait until I get my baby pom!
Yesterday at a ballgame me and my cousin got to pet someone's pomeranian. She was so adorable and would let anyone pet or rub her. She would also lick your finger or nose. She was just precious.
I think poms have baby doll faces. They are just soooooooooooooo cute.
When I get my baby this will be a nice book to have. Good source for info on all things pom.
HAPPY SUMMER!

Book Description
Hailed for her “remarkably accomplished and poignant work” (Washington Post), acclaimed author Elizabeth McGregor returns with a haunting love story about two lost souls brought together by chance—and bonded forever by a mystery that transcends madness, tragedy, and time itself....
Catherine Sergeant is adept at going through the motions. After losing her parents at an early age, she buried her grief in the study of antiquities. Now, deserted by her husband without warning or explanation, she reports to work at Pearson’s auction house, exchanging pleasantries with colleagues, never revealing her pain. Cocooned in loneliness, she couldn’t be more surprised to find herself opening up to a total stranger—a new client, no less.
In widowed architect John Brigham, Catherine finds a kindred spirit. The two share a fascination with Richard Dadd, an early Victorian painter who lived most of his life incarcerated in an insane asylum. There he produced his most stunning works—works that have deeply moved Catherine and now draw her inexorably
to John. Soon the two are falling in love.
The reawakening of passion in a woman like Catherine is more than John ever hoped for. But when she discovers his possession of an unknown Dadd, it is just the first in a series of revelations that leave her wondering if she knows this man who has shown her life’s true beauty. For John, it may be a last chance to free himself from the priceless secrets he has been harboring too long. Secrets about a soul laid bare on canvas, and a legacy that could shatter all he holds dear in the space of a heartbeat…
A compelling blend of human drama, art, and history, this intriguing tale casts a spell that lingers far beyond the final page—and celebrates the strength we all must find within our hearts.

Customer Reviews:
Has promise, but misses the mark.......2007-06-17
I read this for our bookclub. I am a fan of Richard Dadd and was looking forward to this book. I was disappointed, however. The characters are not particularly sympathetic and the two parts of the book (the ongoing romance between John and Catherine; Helen's sinking pathetically into serious mental illness; Catherine and Robert's peculiar breakup--intercut with the peeping into Richard Dadd's psyche) just didn't work really well as an integrated whole. The pace was a bit slow, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, though the ultimate payoff did not make it worthwhile. Not a terrible book by any means, but not very memorable. If you are interested in Dadd, by all means take a look.
Not my kind of book.......2007-06-10
This may possibly be a good book - I found it so boring I gave up after reading only a third of it. Maybe I missed the good part. Although I am a compulsive reader (who ELSE reads the side of cereal boxes?), I couldn't force myself to finish it.
very pleased.......2007-03-09
Received in a very timely manner, book was new and I certainly enjoyed reading it. I would buy from this vendor again.
Well worth reading..........2006-09-14
I had grabbed this book while passing thru a bookstore out of sheer desperation for something to read, and it has turned out to be a wonderful literary surprise. The author brings her characters to life, even the artist, Dadd, takes on a whole new meaning. I'm now anxious to learn more about him. But even more, I am looking forward to reading more of Elizabeth McGregor's books. She has an extraordinary talent in keeping readers interested, even as the story of both Dadd and the primary characters changes from one minute to the next.
I strongly recommend this for a really good read.
life imitates art imitates life.......2006-02-25
Oh, wow, I was impressed with this book. Two stories which turn out to be related, alternate. We open in a London insane asylum, 1844. In the middle of a scene remeniscent of the beginning of Amadeus, the artist Richard Dadd is painting the details of an insect's wing. Probably most Americans and people without an art history background have not heard of Dadd, but he was real and his work was fascinating. It's worth taking a look at some of his pictures on the web. He was put away for life after killing his father in the middle of a delusion (he was schizophrenic). Much of his best work was done while confined in mental hospitals. In present day London, art appraiser Catherine has been left by her husband Robert. In the course of her work, she meets John, who has a house full of art and collectibles and antiques. They begin a relationship that eventually leads back to Richard Dadd. The stories are well told, the descriptions are exquisite, and the author treats characters having major mental illnesses with sensitivity, although she also makes them realistic. One remarkable scene has Dadd being transferred from a hospital where he's been for 20 years to another institution outside London. It's his first time out and his first trip on a train. It's a Rip van Winkle kind of sensation; yet Dadd carefully notes every detail for future works because he knows he wont get the chance to see it again. This book is just so interesting and really a pleasure to read. I felt I learned quite a bit, and that's something for a novel. Highly recommended.

These childhood memories of one hundred men and women, ranging in age from twenty-two to ninety-nine, create a vivid portrait of American Jewish life in the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
A WONDERFUL GIFT TO GIVE OR RECEIVE!.......2000-09-28
Authored by the popular team of Myrna and Harvey Frommer, this a wonderful collection of anecdotal history. It covers momentous events and intimate moments spanning decades of Jewish-American thinking from every sector of the country. Its richness is doled out in small, poignant bites of personal history frequently focusing on a fading European past and compromises and dilemmas with a gentile world. There is heartbreak but also a grand humor.
Kaleidoscopic view// National Library Service.......2000-08-06
"Childhood memories of Jewish men and women of all ages from across the country. They describe their urban and suburban experiences and discuss long-held traditions and religious rituals. Presents a kaleidoscopic view of twentieth-century life from immigrant and minority perspectives."
JUST A DELIGHT! - oHIOANA QUARTERLY.......2000-04-29
"IF YOU SOMEHOW MISSED THIS BOOK WHEN HARCOURT BRACE FIRST PUBLISHED IT IN 1995, HERE'S ANOTHER CHANCE. IF YOU GREW UP JEWISH IN AMERICA, IT WILL ENLIGHTEN YOU AND MAKE YOU REMEMBER. IT'S A WARM, WONDERFUL MEMORY BOOK OF LIFE AS IT USED TO BE -- ALL OVER AMERICA -- IN A MUCH LESS COMPLICATED TIME. . . BITTERSWEET IN PLACES, IT IS A DELIGHT."
FASCINATING! ----------Kliatt.......2000-04-29
The book provides a fascinating look at Jewish life. We learn about families, school activities, religious life, and anything else the people felt like discussing. All areas of the country are represented as well as all aspects of Judaism. Hundreds of personal photos add much to to the histories. A good glossary explains the various Yiddish terms used throughout."

===Growing up Jewish IN AMERICA
THIS IS a fine book for goyim. Being gentile, as far as I know, I can say that.
One never knows exactly what one's roots might include. As Leon Toubin comments on a Texas community in this entertaining oral history, "We were probably all Jewish once, but we're Lutheran now." The complexities of American life make this book fun and often pure poetry. Some vital turning points come to life in a just few sentences. Zipporah Marans, whose father was an Orthodox rabbi in Raleigh, N.C., during World War II, recalls G.I.s "would have three days' leave before being shipped overseas. Their girlfriends would come down, and my father would marry them in our living room. My mother, sister, a soldier friend and I would each hold a corner of the chuppa, the wedding canopy."
St. Louis Jews - really, all Jews west of the Appalachians - might feel a bit slighted in this study. David Bisno talks about the divide between Jews of German and Russian descent in St. Louis, but he doesn't offer many details. Ansaie Sokoloff recalls his family leaving St. Louis for Cheyenne, Wyo. Other communities in the chapter about the Midwest and West include Detroit, Duluth, Omaha, Pittsburgh and San Fernando. It reminded me of a gas station attendant in New Jersey who noticed my Missouri plates and said, "I have a cousin who went to school in South Dakota." New York and environs get the bulk of attention here. That's fine, but what I find particularly fascinating are more detailed accounts of unique or remote communities and families struggling to maintain traditions.
The Frommers' book has many moments, too, where one senses the effort necessary to maintain tradition and faith in our time. Though no characters develop in this text, one hears many fragments of fascinating memories, which together present an insightful portrait of vibrant communities and individuals.
