Book Description
"Brilliant...One of the best books of the season."
ASSOCIATED PRESS
A triple murder in a Moscow amusement center: three corpses found frozen in the snow, faces and fingers missing. Chief homicide investigator Arkady Renko is brilliant, sensitive, honest, and cynical about everything except his profession. To identify the victims and uncover the truth, he must battle the KGB, FBI, and New York police as he performs the impossible--and tries to stay alive doing it.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The first of Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko series of novels. Renko is a detective in Moscow, and comes across what appears to be a serial killer. This killler removes the faces and hands of victims to prevent identification.
This leads to a gripping hunt for the maniac, and Arkady uses the services of a forensic anthropologist to reconstruct a face to help him track down the killer.
A Tale that is Fresh and Spellbinding!.......2007-08-15
Martin Smith created a story with all the right essentials for a super suspense filled mystery. There is romance, companionship, death (brutal mine you; faces mutilated, fingerprints removed), corruption and violence, betrayal and it all takes place in Russia. Then you combine the story with an author that can write a tale that is fresh and spellbinding then you have super novel. In my opinion this is still one of the best mystery novels out on the market today.
Five stars for Gorky Park.......2007-08-09
After reading HAVANA BAY, I went upstream to GORKY PARK. Both novels are so very good, even though the thriller/mystery component is not that compelling; it doesn't have to be. Gorky Park is smart and cerebral, like Arkady Renko. Every page is rich with great characters, great dialogue, good writing style and pace. It's about life, police work, corruption, greed, political influence and survival in the former USSR and reminds me of the great James Ellroy novels. Martin Cruz Smith also compares with John Le Carré. Five star plus for Gorky Park and on to Polar Star.
More like 3 & 1/2 stars.......2007-04-26
A friend highly recommended this book to me, which is perhaps why I was a little disappointed, as I had very high hopes when picking up this book. While I did end up enjoying the story when I put the book down, it was not a favorite of mine, nor did it compel me to pick up any more of Smith's books.
The reading was slow going for me for at least half of the book. While, I normally throughly enjoy investigative, suspenseful type stories, this one didn't grab onto me quickly. However, about halfway through it seemed to pick up, or perhaps I became accustom to the writing style or Arkady character. Simply put, the plot kept me reading, because I did begin to care enough to see what would happen at the end. I was glad that I did, I did start to enjoy the characters and story a bit more, and I was happy with the ending. In addition, the book does not lack mystery and suspense.
Overall, not a bad read, but not an author that I'd pick up again. Just not my type, I don't think.
Gorky Park.......2006-08-28
I arrived at this novel indirectly, after having read 'Havana Bay' and 'Polar Star';#'s 4 & 2 respectively in the Arkady Renko series. There is also the 1983 film-noir, starring William Hurt as the protagonist Arkady. Semi surprisingly the author, Martin Cruz Smith, an american, reveals considerable knowledge of cold war Moscow. Research which took him eight years to complete this book. 'Polar Star' and 'Havana Bay' make better narrative sense if read in chronological order I found to my slightly humourous dismay. Fans of Major/then Colonel Pribluda will be pleased to know his character appears in both sequels.

Book Description
In Driven to Distraction, Drs. Hallowell and Ratey revealed why millions of adults and children are chronic underachievers, caught up in persistent problems in school, at work, and at home. The cause is not lack of self-discipline, but, rather, an inborn neurological condition, Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD.
Answers To Distraction provides practical solutions to the dilemmas of ADD. This "user's guide" to ADD is presented in question-and-answer format ideal for even the most distractible reader. Each chapter covers a specific aspect of ADD, such as ADD in women, ADD and aggression, ADD and addiction, or ADD and work. The authors provide advice for teachers on recognizing ADD and helping students to cope, plus extraordinary insights into the relationship difficulties caused by ADD.
Customer Reviews:
Adds some to the first book.......2007-01-10
Get Driven to Distraction first, but this adds some lifestyle tips. A fair amount of repetition of the first book. It sure is cold in here.
ADD/ADHD IS REAL.......2006-03-15
This is a good book because of it's format; ie: Question/Answer. I think it might even be more helpful to those living with, or who associate with others who have ADD/ADHD.
To those who think ADD/ADHD is not real... your wrong. That being said, I wish to state here that it is not a defect. It is simply another brain/mind type. It is NORMAL, but it does not fit in with the majority. That is why we with ADD/ADHD struggle. We have to fit into a world set up for the majority. Once one learns that this is a GIFT rather than a disadvantage, it is incredibly freeing and even life saving. I know what I am talking about. I learned I had ADD when I was 37. I thank God every time I think about it that He made me this way. My advantages are far too numerous to list here, but suffice it to say, I can do what others only dream of because of this GIFT! My suggestion to all who are like me? Rejoice in it, and make it work FOR YOU. We are the dreamers of big dreams and we can make them HAPPEN.
Great AD/HD Resource.......2004-06-04
This a great AD/HD resource. The book is written in a very ADD friendly Q & A format. This book will anser many commonly asked AD/HD related questions. Many of the questioned answered are ones that you may have always wanted to know but were afried to ask.
This a great book to add your AD/HD Library.
I'll show you my disease if you show me yours! Respond.......2004-05-05
That made me laugh. I have to ask do you believe in AIDS? Do you believe in cancer? Do you think people in wheel chairs can walk? If so way? Have you had any of them? Do you really know what they are like? How do you know they are real? How because science tells you and that same science also has done brain scans on people with AD/HD and has proven that it is real.
So I know people without ADD can have some traits of ADD like forgetting things, sure some people can be just like that but when you forget your own birthday, always lose your keys etc, never organised, can't concentrate for more then about 2 minutes, never on time for anything, poor sleeping habits, trouble learning what others find easy etc would you like me to go on?
If they sound like normal people to me god help us all.
Answers to Review.......2004-03-18
Please disregard the top statement about ADHD being a medical fad. Obviously, he/she has never gone through a day of having ADHD. If this ADHD thing is such a fad, as he/she claims, then explain why studies have shown that well over 50% of those diagnosed with ADHD report major improvements after medication. ADHD research is not perfect, but it has benefited way too many people in this world to pass it off as just an excuse to sell pills.
I guarantee that the reviewer would not be diagnosed with ADHD, as he/she suggests. Doctors go through a series of questioning, and you will only be diagnosed unless your symptoms go over a certain threshold. You don't just get labeled with ADHD because you're forgetful or sometimes hyper; you have to display a certain level of symptoms. In extreme cases, it's almost impossible to deny: blurting out comments for no apparent reason, complete inability to sit still, etc....
ADHD research is not perfect. But just because it doesn't work for you or your family does not mean it applies to everyone. I'm sorry that your child was misdiagnosed, but a lot of people are diagnosed and helped. But for those who want to find information, I have (and most psychologists I know) recommended "Driven to Distraction". It's pretty much the most basic book you can find on the subject. If you are one of the fairly small percentage of adults who are constantly frustrated by a brain malfunction that makes you feel stupid (even though you know you're not), then please at least do the research. It couldn't hurt you to arm yourself with more information.

The food of the Greek Islands, which stretch from the Turkish shore to the eastern Ionian Sea, is simple but packed with flavor. Aglaia Kremezi has gathered over 150 recipes from these ancient, sunny lands and presented them with fascinating historical and cultural notes in The Foods of the Greek Islands, a landmark collection. The dishes she offers, such as Spaghetti with Lobster Sauce, Meatballs with Rice and Herbs in Lemon Broth, and Baked Mixed Vegetables, are as easy to prepare as they are wonderful to eat. Readers long hoping to find authentic recipes for the best Greek cooking, and those who enjoy fine Mediterranean food, should hail the book.
Beginning with island-by-island food profiles, the book then offers sections on meze, the famed small-dish appetizers; pitas and pies; entrees; seasonal salads; bread; and desserts. Welcome attention is also given to beans, rice, bulgur, and pastas, and dishes such as White Bean Soup with Wild Celery and Lemon, Bulgur with Chicken Liver and Currants, and Penne with Olive Oil and Toasted Cheese should become everyday and special-occasion household favorites. Bread and dessert recipes are equally satisfying: Kremezi's Olive and Mint Bread and Saffron, Allspice, and Pepper Biscuits, among others, will please bakers amateur and pro, while the sweets, based on honey, fruits, nuts, and cheese, are similarly tempting. Illustrated with color photos, and with a comprehensive ingredient glossary, the book is a window on cooking few of us could enjoy until its much appreciated arrival. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Stretching from the shores of Turkey to the Ionian Sea east of Italy, the Greek islands have been the crossroads of the Mediterranean since the time of Homer. Over the centuries, Phoenicians, Athenians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottoman Turks, and Italians have ruled the islands, putting their distinctive stamp on the food. Aglaia Kremezi, a frequent contributor to GOURMET and an international authority on Greek food, spent the past eight years collecting the fresh, uncomplicated recipes of the local women, as well as of fishermen, bakers, and farmers. Like all Mediterranean food, these dishes are light and healthful, simple but never plain, and make extensive use of seasonal produce, fresh herbs, and fish. Passed from generation to generation by word of mouth, most have never before been written down. All translate easily to the American home kitchen: Tomato Patties from Santorini; Spaghetti with Lobster from Kithira; Braised Lamb with Artichokes from Chios; Greens and Potato Stew from Crete; Spinach, Leek, and Fennel Pie from Skopelos; Rolled Baklava from Kos. Illustrated throughout with color photographs of the islanders preparing their specialties and filled with stories of island history and customs, THE FOODS OF THE GREEK ISLANDS is for all cooks and travelers who want to experience this diverse and deeply rooted cuisine firsthand.
Customer Reviews:
No pictures of dishes.......2007-01-24
My husband LOVES to cook and try different recipes. I bought him this book but he didn't care for it because it has no pictures and he likes to see what the dish is supposed to look like or even to decide whether he wants to try it or not by seeing the picture.
This books gives a lot of Greek culture, he says, but he wasn't interested in that.
FDOODS OF THE GREEK ISLANDS.......2007-01-15
What a wonderful book! Photographs are beautifully done, and a great selection of authentic recipes too. Would highly recommend this!
Great Food, Confusing Directions.......2007-01-07
This book is gorgeous, both in the sumptious photos and the stunning layout. The intro is fantastic with its summary of differences in cuisine between the mainland and the various islands, and the glossary in back is extremely helpful. Best of all is the food -- not a bad recipe so far and I've tried vegetables to meat to fish, appetizers to mains. This book has even made me like leafy greens. Braised corfu style, mustard greens and spinach turn out to taste as good as anything on the planet. Once that is, you get past the confusing directions. This book is not for beginning cooks. Even experienced cooks are likely to stumble. For instance, in the recipe for braised greens, the ingredients list calls for 2 large ripe tomatoes or 1 cup canned tomatoes with their juice or 1 cup water. Does this mean you can use fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes or water, or does it mean that if you use canned tomatoes you can use either the juice they come in or a cup of water? Ambiguities like this abound. Do you know which are the tender stalks on fennel? When making meatballs with rice and herbs in lemon broth, when the recipe says the chicken broth mixture should completely cover the meatballs, what do you do when it doesn't? If you've cooked before you can eventually figure these things out, but it's clear that while the author really knows how to cook, she didn't have a fresh set of eyes and hands try out the recipes. Still, don't be scared away. Everything in here is great. The food tastes fantastic, and the introduction to each dish that sets it in context is wonderful. It never would have ocurred to me to serve greens over polenta with currants and onions. It was quite a wonderful combo, especially when viewed with the intro that says the recipe came from a doctor in Ithaca who considered it a tribute to the people who ate it on cold, winter nights during World War II as they waited for freedom. As long as you can figure out what set polenta ought to look like, you too can enjoy this simple and tasty dish. The food may be traditional but Kremizi gives it a modern take. I use this book alot and know I will discover something new every time. I just wish the directions were more obvious, but I'm getting over it. The food is that good.
Feels Authentic.......2005-10-22
This book is well-written. Instructions are easy to follow and "toothy" Sometimes you get the feeling the recipe author took the shortest path possible when writing the directions, not here. However, the directions aren't overly lengthy, just enough insight to ensure success. The photography is beautiful. I like the variations and background that accompany the recipes.
The Foods of the Greek Islands: Cooking and Culture at the crossroads of the Mediterranean.......2005-09-05
I ordered the book for my husband's father, his grandfather was from Greece. He loved it,the recipe's and the storie's about the foods and the people of the different islands.

History in a Book and the Book in History.......2007-03-11
From "The Irish Times" review of August 1, 1998:
It is now 50 years since a young American graduate student, James Phillips, arrived in Dublin to investigate the book trade of 18th-century Dublin. Phillips intended his work to be merely part of a study of Robert Bell, a Dublin bookseller who migrated to Philadelphia in the middle of that century. But he soon discovered that very little work had been done on the book trade in 18th-century and the PhD thesis Phillips went on to write and to submit to Trinity College Dublin in 1952 became a full-length study of that fascinating subject. Though it was not published as a book at the time, Phillips's thesis - a tour de force for a doctoral dissertation - has developed almost legendary fame among scholars of 18th-century Ireland to the extent that everyone interested in the field has consulted (or meant to consult) the microfilm or the typescript of Phillips's 1952 thesis at some time or another. Now, unchanged except for a short introduction by Paul Pollard, the greatest living expert on 18th-century Irish book trade, Phillips's 1952 thesis appears as a handsome, well-designed, well printed book - a credit, incidentally, to present-day Irish book design, typesetting, printing and publishing.
