Book Description

How dreadful that the holidays should begin with a wailing scream and a deathly gurgle! Never has Poirot's mighty brain functioned more brilliantly than in Hercule Poirot's Christmas (New York Times).

4 out of 5 stars good mystery.......2007-05-18

It starts off a little slowly, but have patience because the ending is quite a surprise! This is not quite the page turner of Murder on the Orient Express, but builds up about halfway through. The dialogue between Poirot and the other characters is sometimes amusing and Christie shows great attention to detail. Poirot doesn't solve the mystery out of "thin air" like Sherlock Holmes does, but he will make it seem so simple, so completely effortless that you will wonder why you didn't think of it!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Book.......2007-02-02

Our book club wanted a selection for the Christmas meeting and thus chose this Agatha Christie book. Although the subject matter was not in keeping with the season, it was an entertaining book, is light reading and goes fast.

4 out of 5 stars Loved this book. Words are TOOOOOO small!.......2006-12-31

This is a great book. I love Agatha Christie. I'm not complaining about the book or the writing. The text is way too small. I'm hoping that in later editions of the book they actually use text that's readable. I would love to read more of the Christie catalog of novels but I can't read text this small. I'm a young guy in his late 20's and I have trouble reading these. Please make the text big enough to read in later editions. I've been seeing a taller paperback coming out in new books the last couple of years. There are about 4 or 5 Agatha Christies in this newer format. I'm was hoping that they'd print more in that format. I don't buy books I can't read because the type is so small. I didn't buy this book because the type was too small. I went to the library and got it for free. I'm sure you publishers are loosing a lot of sales from making the type so small. I know that me and my friends don't buy books with the type so small. We'll find other ways, like getting an older printing at the library or buying it used online for a couple bucks. THE TEXT IS TOO SMALL ON PAPERBACKS THESE DAYS. STOP BEING GREEDY AND PRINT A LEGIBLE TEXT. PEOPLE DON'T BUY BOOKS WHEN YOU GET CHEAPO TO SAVE 20 pages... they buy books they can actually read.

5 out of 5 stars Murder = A Great Christmas!.......2005-04-20

Loooking for a book of intrigue, suspicious behavior, and loads of blood? "Hercule Poirot's Christmas" is definitely for you!

As someone else said, this book and "Appointment With Death" have striking similarities. Agatha Christie basically switched the gender of the victim, made the desert into an English winter, and bam! "Hercule Poirot's Christmas."

However, there is one big difference. While the plot in "Appointment" is relatively simple and easy to guess the murderer, "Christmas" has a large, complex plot that will keep your brains racking. The murderer is practically impossible to guess, but then when it's revealed, you'll feel stupid for excluding the villian from your suspect list.

The characters are also very interesting. You have Alfred, who only wants affection from his father, but will never get it. His wife, Lydia, who is wiling to protect him at any cost. George, the cold fish, and my favorite character, Magdalene, the younger and stupider signifigant other to George. There's David the dreamer, his kind wife, Hilda, and Harry, the wild child.

Also thrown in is a little romance between Pilar, Simeon's niece (the victim and patriarch) and Stephen Farr, who is a son to a business partner of Simeon's.

Red herrings galore in this book, the crime scene might not have that much evidence as the dialogue. Pay close attention to it and you may get a hint. Especiall the butler, who gets a vague sense of deja vu. The people themselves are important, not the murder weapon or where the victim was killed.

So, read this for a gruesome crime, broken alibis, more than one person who isn't who they say they are, love, hate, and a lot of fun!

5 out of 5 stars A cracking Christmas mystery.......2005-02-05

Hercule Poirot is spending Christmas in the country with his friend Colonel Johnson, Chief Constable of Middleshire, and suffering greatly from the lack of central heating, "Nothing like a wood fire" says Colonel Johnson, but Poirot disagrees. Then nasty, malicious old millionaire Simeon Lee is bloodily murdered, and Poirot is called in to investigate.

The house is full of Simeon Lee's put-upon sons and their put-upon wives, any one of whom might have wanted to do the old tyrant in, especially as Lee was about to change his will, apparently to include his beautiful granddaughter Pilar, just arrived from Spain, whom none of the family had ever set eyes on before. The family are naturally anxious to insist that the murder must have been an outside job, whereas Poirot is equally convinced that one of the family is responsible.

This is one of the most delightful of the Poirot mysteries, with an interesting set of characters, especially vivacious, unconventional Pilar, amusing dialogue, and a cunning murderer to unmask. A real Christmas treat.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good Book!.......2006-06-22

This is a really great book. I had read some of Kathy Tyer's other work, such as the Firebird Trilogy, and loved them. While this does not in any way measure up to Firebird, it is still a very good and enjoyable read. It does, however, have some of the same aspects as her other work. It dabbles in mind control, and memory loss, with many details about the strange and futuristic world. The only thing that disappointed me, was that unlike her other work, it did not have as much, if any, Christian emphasis, which was one of the things I loved about Firebird. Still, over all a very good read, and one I would recommend to any fantasy reader.

the book went over well. It was imformative to the children. It help reinforced what the family has been saying.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about strangers.......2006-02-22

I bought this book for my 6-year old. We read it together and discussed what they were talking about in each chapter. Excellent book for talking to your kids about strangers - without scaring them. I definitely recommend it for most kids starting at 5-years old.

                    5 out of 5 stars Stranger Savvy.......2005-03-24

This excellent book is a good teaching tool for helping children recognize who is a "kind" stranger as opposed to someone they don't know who is unkind. The beautiful illustrations add to the books appeal; the hypothetical scenarios will undoubtedly help children and parents think of methods to apply when faced with "unkind" strangers.

3 out of 5 stars not age appropriate.......2004-05-10

This book is listed as age appropriate for 4-year-olds. In my opinion, it is way too complex for this age group, I would say more for ages 6 on up. Check it out at your library first.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for family, school, and community libraries........2000-04-07

Most children art taught at home and at school not to talk to strangers. In Who Is A Stranger And What Should I Do?, Linda Girard takes the idea further by explaining about "kind" strangers, the stranger who is not a child's friend, strangers in public places, "doorbell" strangers, and others. Girard's practical, well presented text is illustrated with the artwork of Helen Cogancherry to provide young readers ages 6 to 12 with visual reinforcement of sound and sensible narrative. Who Is A Stranger And What Should I Do? is enhanced for the reader with ten "what if" situations and topics for discussion with parents, teachers, and caregivers. Highly recommended for personal, school, and community library child safety collections.

                    Book Description

Along with its companion volume, the highly successful Brunello to Zibibbo, this is a benchmark title on Italian wines. Nicolas Belfrage,a regular contributor to Decanter magazine, explores the mysteries of Northern Italian viniculture, focusing on dozens of wines ranging from the normale to the highest-quality single-vineyard masterpieces. Using many local and international grape varieties as signposts, he guides the reader through such magical areas as Valpolicella, South Tyrol, and Trentino as well as the hills of Bologna and the Po Valley plain, where Lambrusco wines really did once hang from trees. Enhancing his text with an extensive listing of producers, a helpful glossary of Italian terms, and even a guide to pronouncing Italian words, Belfrage has written one of the most complete and accessible guides to today's Italian wines yet to be published.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Wines of Northern Italy.......2001-02-28

Nicolas Belfrage has used his extensive wine knowledge and more importantly his excellent understanding of Italy to write a book for the serious wine lover. Belfrage takes you completely across northern Italy and describes the wines of each area. While he doesn't give vintage charts for the wines, he does discuss the recognized better producers which allows the reader to find the wines and make his own decisions. More maps and some color pictures would have made the book more visually appealing, but would have increased the cost and made the book less travel friendly. It's definitely a condensed source of information that will prove very useful to the Italian tourist/wine traveler. I've been fortunate enough to have seen many of the wine areas in northern Italy. I wish I would have had this book with me. On my next trip, Belfrage's book will be packed in my carry-on.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to the wines of Northern Italy.......2000-12-29

Those who have read the Faber & Faber guides to wine regions such as Burgundy, Alsace and the Rhône valley and expect something similar, may be disappointed, but of course you can't squeeze that much into about 350 pages. What we get instead is a kind of long essay which covers Italy north of Tuscany. Belfrage still manages, almost miraculously, to cover quite a number of producers (including some that are not included in the Slow Food/Gambero Rosso annual guide to Italian wines), and, what's more, he gives you an idea of what's going on. A very useful update ten years after Burton Andreson's groundbreaking atlas. If you want to know more, you need to read Italian (and get the regional guides published by Slow Food).

1 out of 5 stars Not good enough !.......2000-03-10

This book is a disappointment ! Having bought other Faber books (publisher) I had expected a well-written walk-through of Northern Italy with extensive descriptions of many producers, many tasting notes and vintage charts.

Verdict ? There are absolutely no vintage charts, the description of the vineries are superficial, the book is badly organised (no headers to indicate where you are in the book, for quick look-ups) and generally no specifications to the producers individual Wines. To me, this is a 'blah-blah' book... Conclusion: NOT recommendable, neither to the amateur nor the 'pro'

1 out of 5 stars Fine Itlain Wine Book - At Last.......2000-02-24

I have been searching long and hard for a book on Italian wines that does seek to complicated an already difficult region and Mr Belfrage has succeded with aplomb.

The vineyard and wine description are concise, well laid aout and interesting to read. He raises intellegant points about producers and their wines and manages to encapsulate something of the spirit of this vast region.

Three cheers and I look forward to the Tuscan series.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book to get you up to speed with modern theory.......2007-07-23

I just brought home my first cat in 20 years, and find this book an excellent primer in getting to know this little creature & appreciate it as a friend. The book is identical to her other book titled "How to Talk to Your Cat", so no need to buy both. The book is not written in an 'owner manual' style, but rather as a long essay where the author dispenses her sage advice. All the author is doing in this book is tying together modern theory to explain what a cat is, & why it does what it does, so we can better appreciate it & have more fruitful interactions with it. Some people may prefer a more systematic & technical approach; it is all personal preference. But I agree, the title is very misleading & a slick marketing ploy.

                    5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2006-03-01

This book is one of the best I have seen on cat behavior and psychology. It is very in depth and easy to read. I recommend this to all users who want to get to know their cats better!

Aside from the catchy title, I found little of use in this book that supposedly deals with cat communication. Any 'tasty morsels' were far and few between. Does the author even own a cat?

2 out of 5 stars The Cat Whisperer: The Secret of How to Talk to Your Cat.......2004-04-28

At the beginning of this book, the author attempts to get us to understand from a cat's perspective on what it must be like to live with humans by comparing cats to Eskimos who suddenly move to the jungle. I nearly couldn't read any further. It is a distracting and unappetizing comparison with which Native people may be all too familiar.

Throughout the book, the author seems to go on and on about the relative popularity of dogs to cats. She includes far too much about dogs and their behavior characterstics in relation to people. If this were a book about cats and dogs that might have been appropriate. However, in this book, it was simply another distraction.

There are a few interesting things, but overall doesn't cover any new ground that Desmond Morris hasn't already covered.

I've read dozens of cat books in the last few years, and frankly I just thought this one was a waste of money. There is no new info here, no new point of view, nothing that isn't available in a dozen other cat books, and better written at that. Someone who picked up "Cats For Dummies" would get more plentiful, useful information.

Each year of the Mustang is listed separately with full color pictures, production details, color codes, model year changes and more. Brad Bowling definitely knows Mustangs inside and out. Very well organized by year. Definitely worth the money to buy online. I couldn't find this in the stores locally.

I was indeed fortunate to obtain a copy of Shop Savvy about twelve years ago and it has been one of my favorite books for years. I keep it at the head of our bed and have spent countless hours reading all the really neat shop tips Roy has compiled. Though it was written in the 80s, the information in this book is timeless and completely useful in today's world. This book is a must for the home workshop and will remain extremely valueable and useful for many years to come. I have enjoyed the book so much I even called the author to tell him how much I have enjoyed his book over the years. He is in his 80s now and will not be blessing us with a follow on. I have managed to make some of the tools he recommends and have been able to purchase some of the tools pictured. I have also applied many of his tips in everyday activities over the years and have never found anything he recommended to fail to work following the descriptions.
The photographs are very good and the written descriptions are outstanding. Without this book to explain the usefulness of the tools/techniques he explains I would have passed them by without ever realizing what I was missing.
If there was ever a book that was the ideal gift for the woodworker, metalworker, home repair specialist, or future engineer/technician this is it. I would recommend this book for all ages and skill levels. If I were a shop teacher at a school I would have this book available to all the students as a reference work.
I think so much of this book I refuse to loan it to anyone as I feel it will not return to my possession. I feel that anyone that likes to work with his hands and purchases this book will never regret the expense. I count it as an investment that has paid off handsomely with the knowledge he imparts.

5 out of 5 stars Every home workshop person should have this book!!!.......2002-05-15

This book is just plain neat! I acquired the book about a year and a half ago and I have used many of the techniques detailed in the book since that time. On more than one occasion, I have just sat reading about many of Mr. Moungovan's projects and admiring his accumulated knowledge and skill.

For a woodworker to get a view into the world of the metal worker, and vice versa, IS EXTREMELY USEFUL AND PRACTICAL -- especially in this day of one-size-fits-all Home Depot's and the like. What do I mean by that? Most of us had to spend many years in the company of serious practitioners to have the kind of skills and techniques - at-the-ready - like those detailed in Mr. Moungovan's book. I am a woodworker who has a bench metal lathe, but not until I acquired this book did I realize the full utility of this piece of equipment! I use an oxyacetylene torch now. The book conveys a definite confidence about home workshop problem solving. I'm still primarily a woodworker, but now I have so many more approaches, materials, and techniques available to me. This book is unique. It will get you over the hump and help you maintain a real and genuinely useful home workshop.

Seriously, here we have a guy -- Roy Moungovan -- who has been there and done it! Hats off to Mr. Moungovan and I really respect what he has accomplished here.

Journalist Jonetta Rose Barras takes a hard-boiled look at the rise and fall of Washington, D.C., Mayor Marion Barry, who was reelected after serving time for smoking crack. Barras, in her top- notch reporting, lays bare the racially charged Washington political landscape in which Barry operates, writing, "Some blacks are leery of Barry. Having found their way inside corporate boardrooms and suburban neighborhoods, they temper their praise for him, labeling his race-based politics divisive.... Still, their cultural connections demand that they respect and marvel at Barry...."

Barras chronicles Barry's beginnings, from his '60s student work in Nashville, Tennessee (which is also discussed in broader scope in David Halberstam's The Children), to his ascendance from the D.C. school board to the mayor's office. But Barras also calls into account the effectiveness of Barry's '60s-style political activism and the near-despotic characteristics of his generation's hold on power. "Twenty years from now," she writes, "if today's new black leaders provide for their own timely exits from the political stage--something their predecessors failed to do--they will help realize the dream of civil rights era activists." Barras's book is a sometimes scathing account of Barry's peril and promise that also serves as a cautionary tale for future black leaders. --Eugene Holley Jr.

1 out of 5 stars An opinion column, dressed up as a book........2005-07-31

In this book, Ms. Barras, a writer of opinion columns, has produced an extremely long opinion column dressed up as a "book". Her reporting is shallow, and her description of the 1994 mayoral campaign is inaccurate and woefully incomplete.

Jonetta Rose Barras brings us an insightful and provocative perspective to the successes, tribulations, and resurrection of this "Old Guard" political activist-turned "Mayor for Life." Her book will forever stand as a historical analysis of the politics of the post-civil rights era and a prophecy for the future of American blacks in our nation's political framework. -Armstrong Williams, nationally syndicated columnist, author of Beyond Blame

An eloquent and disturbing book. Barras relocates the transfixing story of Mayor Marion Barry's rise and fall and rise and fall from the arena of electoral politics to the realm of cultural myth and religious belief. In a political sense, Barras's book tells us that we will have to leave behind the baggage of racial superstition if we are to confront the real problems of the nation's capital and our other cities in pain. Barras' book leaves you with more questions than answers, but they are questions that we dare not avoid as we move into the next century. -Jamin B. Raskin, Professor, Washington College of Law, American University

Marion Barry has done his stubborn best to clothe himself in a hopefully impenetrable cloak of insufferable hubris and racial pride. With clarity, passion, and often outright dismay, Jonetta Rose Barras unravels Barry's cloak - and shows that this particular emperor is about as naked as naked gets. -Arthur J. Magida, author of Prophet of Rage: A Life of Louis Farrakhan and His Nation

The story of Marion Barry is the story of a life and rare opportunity recklessly misspent, and Jonetta Rose Barras, who knows Washington much better than most, captures this story with sympathy and sensitivity. In an unflinching dissection of man and opportunity, she shows us why and how Marion Barry cheated himself, his city, and all the rest of us. -Wesley Pruden, Editor-in-chief, Washington Times

The most comprehensive and descriptive study to date of the elusive Marion Barry. Cropp, Associate Professor of Public Administration, George Washington University

Barras offers the kind of ferocious insight and outstanding historical reporting that make The Last of the Black Emperors a huge step in understanding one of the most controversial leaders in contemporary American politics. -David Carr, Editor, Washington City Paper

I wasn't that interested in the subject of Marion Barry when I was given this book, but once I started it, I couldn't put it down. The Last of the Black Emperors is a terrific piece of writing and an exciting read. Barras' metaphor of the folkloric spider is very appropriate for Marion Barry. Especially impressive is her ability to place Barry's leadership style not only in a political and historical landscape, but also in the emotional landscape of American racism. Barras teaches us a great deal about the development of black leaders over the last our decades, and delivers a compelling story of Marion Barry, the person, and Marion Barry, the emblem. -Lori Shpunt, Professor of English, Trinity College, Washington, D.C.

A no-holds-barred, but in some ways heavy-hearted look at the last of a kind-and, by extension, the times that made him happen. -Colbert King, columnist and editorial writer, The Washington Post

Information is power and, in this book, Barras serves up a heaping helping. With compelling anecdotes, brilliant insights, and real data, she takes you inside Washington politics and into the psyche of African-American voters across the country. With unwavering conviction, she explores myths and master plans by examining Barry the man, and Barry the legacy. For the casual political observer, Last of the Black Emperors is a magnificent treat. For pollsters, pundits, and campaign operatives, it's a must read.
