And while she's concentrating on keeping her job, and keeping her life in order, the rapping avenger turns up dead on the subway track, and all signs point to Bel as the most likely suspect. Now a middle–aged, law–abiding college professor has to find the evidence to prove she's innocent, before the decision to give one bad grade lands her in jail for a long, long time.

An online student critique is jarring to Bel Barrett's sense of self-worth. She begins to believe that her former student, Naftali Thompson, posted the hip hop verse. It seems that Naftali was wounded in Iraq. There is a piece on TV about the hip hop evaluation of Bel and then a newspaper article features Naftali.

The events put Bel and her husband into an anxious state. She is accused by the college president of undermining the school. He wants Bel to retire to placate the board and the press. Next Bel's adversary becomes a dead body on the Path train tracks. It is discovered that Naftali's death may not have been accidental or self-induced.

Bel, shocked, finds herself having to give an account to the police of her actions on a previous evening. One thing she finds out when investigating the matter is that for Naftali college was strictly the idea of his older sister. Bel is told, (Bel is in disguise), that she, a college professor, got fired because she dissed Naftali. Her hip hop informant laughs at the notion of an aging white female academic being upset. The reader is made to realize here that hip hop is another sort of dialect. Bel's sense of being in criminal jeopardy is alleviated by her successful fact-finding forays.

This is a well done murder mystery in the author's HOT series.

Patuuueee - eekk. What a horrid book! I've never read any of the earlier books in the series, thank GOD, and have to wonder yet again - how did this POS get published? I agree, the characters are TOTALLY unbelivable, Bel keeps referring to teachers as being so smart - Pleeze. There are huge info dumps between Sol and Bel (who call one another 'love' so often I nearly barfed) and I gave up on page 21 when there sentences in a row started, "Well,...." I hope the author didn't teach her students to write this rechedly.

The characters are unbelievable and lack any development or depth. Everyone is superficial. Everybody just "happens" to tell Bel everything they know, so untrue to real life I couldn't finish it. Great reading for 12 year olds, but I'll choose Adam Dagliesh and J. P. Beaumont any day.

I enjoyed the last book in this series, the first one in a long time, and had high hopes for this one. I was sorely disappointed.

The whole story was unbelievable. Bel is accused of murder and sets out to find the real killer herself. She digs up easy clues that the cops aren't able to find (such as looking as survelliance video from the scene of the crime). She runs around in a wig harassing and annoying the friends and relatives of the victim (who just tell all to this total stranger). People she literally runs into on the street coincidentally happen to help her with her investigation (giving her an opportunity to find evidence). Then you have the ever-annoying Illuminada and Betty (two of the worst sidekicks in cozies), as well as Sol (who was especially irritating in this book), add in the stupid sub-story with Rebecca (her daughter sends her an e-mail saying she took her baby to visit a friend and this convinces Bel that Rebecca's marriage is breaking up), toss in all the gangsta-rap, and this book ended up being painful to read.

I think this series has run its course -- I mean, how many murders and investigations can a middle-aged college professor find herself in the middle of? Maybe it's time for Bel and crew to retire.

terrific Bel Barrett mystery.......2005-11-30

Tenured professor Bel Barrett of River Edge Community College loves her job and is proud that the students like her and that the chairman and president are aware that she deserves the accolades she has won over the years. She is therefore very distressed when a website aimed at evaluating the teachers of RECC includes a rapper dissing her. She feels mortified, ashamed and wonders who it could be. After going through her records she concludes that it is Naftali, a student she gave a D to a few years ago who was so incensed he went before a committee to get his grade changed.

He wanted to be a hip hop gangsta rapper singing about the Iraqi war so he enlists and comes back missing an arm. He blames Bel for the D that stopped him from being eligible for a four year college. The press gets hold of his message on the website and Bel finds her reputation in shreds. When someone kills Naftali the police zero in on Bel as the prime suspect forcing her to begin one of her infamous investigations and this time the person who will benefit the most if she finds the real killer is herself.

One of the reasons the Bel Barrett mysteries are such a success is the heroine is funny, independent and determined. She is a female readers can identify with as she investigates murders in between hot flashes. Jane Isenberg raises the quality bar of her own series with HOT WIRED because the heroine has a personal stake in the outcome of her latest sleuthing but she still remains the same character readers have come to love.

I love this book for several reasons, but the most important of them is the painstaking, meticulous revelation of a moral core from which sport, media, participation in government and the attention of an entire population have all digressed. When I came upon this book, I nearly was entirely overwhelmed. I have been a Cubs fan for over 40 years and have studied Kabbalah with Zve ben Shimon Halevi for 20 years. I LOVE this book. I once drew the Tree of Life wherein I drew all the sephera as baseballs; calling it the "Cuballa." I am further astonished at the syncronisity of my own life. My father was from Kiev and in the Soviet Army in WW2. Alas he was a White Sox fan. It embodies my entire life in such a bittersweet rememberence of my parents and needless to say my beloved Wrigley 9. I went to every opening day and hung at the "Cubby Bear Lounge." I am really astounded that someone wrote this book ( for me). I would pay to sit in a seat in the friendly confinds, with no game going on; just to absorb the only real ballpark. It is not unlike the Kabbalah. Thank you Mr. Sherwin for such an incrutible treasure.

Rabbi Sherwin's paean to perennial also-ran, the Chicago Cubs baseball team, in his THE CUBS AND THE KABBALIST might best be summed up with the following two word: "very cute."

It's true. It really *was* cute, and I had an exceptionally grand time turning the pages of this entertaining read, adding up to one of the more *fun* fictional pieces in my collection these past couple of weeks.

Admittedly, CUBS is safely nestled in the fictional world, folks. Sherwin blends his rigorously-researched reams of Cubs and other baseball statistics alongside the esoteric practice of Jewish Mysticism, or Kabala ("kabbalah"). I fell in love early and often with the way this story unfurled.

It begins with leading rabbi, Jay Loeb (J-Lo, anyone?), and his concerns over his wife Tamara. The author describes how the shalom bayit/bayis, or "peace of the home," chez Loeb has recently been disturbed by Tamara's frequent tirades railing against the annual stream of Cubs losses. We find ourselves at the point where it's beginning to affect her performance at work -- she's a lawyer, see -- and because of all this, Tamara's been stressing. Loeb's had enough, and he resolves on the spot to do something about it.

Like any loving husband might, the good rabbi seeks to ease his wife's pain, and rustles up a solution. Loeb eventually falls back on the mainstay of his rabbinical training and investigates the possibility of using his expertise in matters concerning the ancient Jewish Kabbalistic practice to provide a cure for what's been ailing Tamara's hapless beloved Cubs.

Soon, the Cubs begin cobbling together a series of seemingly-miraculous wins at home in the "Friendly Confines" of Shy-Town's [Chicago] Wrigley Field, mostly due to some clandestine "soul work" Loeb has been conjuring up in the silence of the night. Cue "The Golem of Prague" story -- for those of you who know it -- to explore the possibilities of what might happen to the rest of this story. (I won't give it away, but do expect a little twist at the end there. One which I think you're going to enjoy.)

This book is a pure pleasure read.

Sherwin doesn't overwhelm you with complex jargon, and while his subject material -- Jewish Mysticism -- is a very serious subject indeed, not to be trifled with lightly by any stretch (a la what Madonna, her husband Guy Ritchie, Bittney and others have been doing in Hollywood) -- he doesn't lord it over you inside the pages of this book. Delivered in a sometimes-humourous, sometimes-tongue-in-cheek style, Freud would be proud of Sherwin's cigar-is-just-a-cigar read -- I mean, c'mon!, it's baseball...our National Pastime (will it always remain so?). Don't expect some heavy non-fiction here, okay?

Byron L. Sherwin's quite obviously got the skills, ladies and gentlemen.

His narrative is tightly woven, and he leaves no stones unturned in CUBS. With a typical moviemaker's flourish, he ends his book with a cute little Epilogue a la what you might see in a happy Disney movie, and that made me smile. You'll learn of what "became" of the various players in this little drama, and I'll admit that it summed things up handily for this here reviewer.

A Study of Energy Medicine.......2007-09-13

This is an interesting subject matter. It is a beneficial mode of healing and as stated in this book the "methods can be traced back 5,000 years". I like the fact that their is another tool that can heal which can reduce or even eliminate medication. The author provides information that shows this concept as a tool which complements the science of Psychology.

This book includes a 5 minute daily energy routines that can be combined with other disiplines of excercise. Some of the routines can assist with insomia, ADD, and memory to name a few. IMHO-I would not try any of the information in this book without seeing a professional in this field. I highly recommend this for individuals suffering from PTSD and missing limbs.

This book is easy to read and understand. The techniques offered WORK. I wish every troubled person owned and used a copy of this book every day. Excellent Guide to Healing, Health & Optimal Performance. . ........2006-06-07

We are in the midst of a paradigm shift, in terms of understanding what actually helps in supporting the healing process. As a psychologist, hypnotherapist, medical researcher and international investigator into alternative healing practices, I was delighted to come across the new book, The Promise of Energy Psychology. I found it tremendously helpful, as well as a delight to read.

This book is definitely a gift for those wanting to learn effective techniques for personal growth and healing. It is also of great use for professionals who are eager to expand their skills in helping clients. It is rare to find a description of such a new therapy, reviewed in such an intelligent, grounded, compassionate, and useful way.

I had been hearing about different forms of Energy Psychology such as EFT, and TFT, where people tap on different parts of their body, as they say certain phrases. It seemed that people were getting cured from phobias, as well as relief from the disturbing imagery and emotions that often follow a traumatic event (what is referred to as Post Traumatic Shock Disorder or PTSD.) However, it was hard to believe how such an unusual technique could work. I am therefore very grateful to David Feinstein, and his co-authors Donna Eden & Gary Craig, for elucidating this new technique, in a way that is easy to understand and apply.

The authors explain the techniques clearly, step by step. They then gives many engaging examples of how this simple technique has been used by top clinicians around the world, with quite challenging cases. Thus we begin to learn the "artistry" of the process, as well. The book goes on to explain how these techniques can be applied in a variety of ways to develop optimal performance and health.

I am finding exciting results, in applying this work to my own life, as well as in helping others. I know that I will refer back to this book again and again, and I hope many others will be able to enjoy the healing benefits that this book offers.

Takes Me Back.......2007-02-12

I only had the pleasure once, but my folks have been yearly regulars for years now. Too bad U's is closed now. I was thrilled to recieve this cookbook, and I've had very good luck with the recipes. Uglesich's was not a fancy restaurant. They just concentrated on making excellent food. The cookbook perhaps reflects that. I think anyone with some skill and a sense of adventure will enjoy using this book. A little cultural homework might be necessary, as some of the other reviewers have pointed out, but that's half the fun.

Call me sentimental and definitely not a cookbook technician, but anything and EVERYthing to do with Uglesich's is a FIVE star with us! All I have to do is open the book and I am almost back to NOLA and our favorite restaurant with a small group of incredibly talented folks from the owners to the servers to the cooks and shuckers!!!! We miss them all! So what if I cannot access every single ingredient the moment I want it! We did not purchase five cookbooks for our sons, ourselves and some of our Ugli fans/friends for any other reason than to relish our experiences there and look forward to the next cookbook! And you know, the recipes ARE delicious!!!

Homestyle Cookbook for a Homestyle Restaurant.......2005-08-31

Most of the reviews for this cookbook have been negative, and they do point out some legitimate beefs, but this book is a great match for one of the quirkiest, most individualistic and truly satisfying restaurants in the nation. I'll state up front that I only went to the restaurant once, in January of 2005, and I bought the book when I placed my meal order. The food, folksie ambience and genuine characters who own and work Uglesich's are reflected in the book, and the fact that one of the family wrote the cookbook makes it that much more satisfying to own and to try and recreate even an iota of the magic of the restaurant.
As for the gripes... yes, there are typos, but they are simple oversights in a book that I have no doubt many people asked to be written for many years. This is not some flashy New York City publisher who shot a couple of pictures, chatted briefly with the owners and slapped the Uglesich's name on someone else's recipes. These are the real deal and the book is a loving homage to a place, its people, and the food that made it famous. I find the photos to be quite good, and frankly don't trust people who only look for glossy images of every recipe in a cookbook. They can stick to the photo-fetishism of Saveur magazine and the like (no knock on Saveur, but this is a cookbook!). The recipes do tend to the minimalist side as far as instructions, but that reflects the laid-back attitude of the real place. This is not the scientific precision of Cook's Illustrated, but it does give you the basics of the Uglesich's barbeque sauce and the straightforward way to make their dishes. If you don't understand what one of the ingredients is and feel that it should have been better explained (as per one of the previous reviews of this book), do a web search or ask someone at your grocery store! C'mon, this isn't rocket science, and this cookbook in particular embraces the down-home Lousiana ethos of good food, good people, and good times.
At this point, it is unclear whether the restaurant will ever open again, and considering that as I write this is the day after Hurrican Katrina blew through, there may not even be a kitchen to go back to. But I certainly hope to see Anthony and Gail again, and in the meantime I will refer back to the book anytime I need a little of that Uglesich's magic. As far as I am concerned, this book rates 4.5 stars.

Better with a little local knowledge..........2005-06-13

From a Native New Orleanian, This is a good cookbook! I noticed that the other negative reviews have to do with not understanding ingredients that we take for granted & assume others do to. A pistolette is a long roll, habenero is a pepper (and not only used in N.O. cooking) and there are countless bottled varieties available. Your choice of dressing on a po-boy or sandwich means lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mayo etc, whatever you like. A remoulade sauce is a simple staple and you can buy it or make it easily with a recipe off the internet. Likewise, all of this information is easily accessable if you want to find out. Yes there are a lot of ingredients like creole mustard that are difficult to find in other parts of the country, but isn't this the case with most local, specialty cookbooks??? This restaurant isn't one of N.O.'s favorites for no reason!

By the way, most good New Olreans cookbooks will tell you to try different substitutions according to your liking, so don't be afraid & go for it if you can't find the exact brand of hot sauce a recipe calls for!

Poorly written and photographs are terrible.......2005-03-31

I was looking forward to this cookbook but I have to agree with the other reviews...it was a big disappointment.

I think the book could have used an experienced cookbook editor. It is very amatuerish. An experienced editor could have helped make the recipes clearer, being sure to provide equivalents and substitutions wherever possible. Heck, I'd even settle for clarification on some of the more obscure ingredients listed. Such as, what the heck is a pisotlette? The bloody mary recipe calls for some kind of habenero sauce...what is that? Where can I find it, order it etc. One recipe calls for sun dried tomatoes, do they mean dry or packed in oil? Sadly, the whole book is filled with these kinds of obscure references that will leave many readers clueless and frustrated.

And the photographs of the food are awful! Perhaps they were going for an artsy look to the cookbook by making all the photographs look blurred and out of focus but the end result is that it looks extremely amatuerish and makes the food look unappetizing. The photographs also seem poorly lit.

I did enjoy all the background information regarding the family and the restaraunt. I love a cookbook that also tells a story. I commend them for recognizing suppliers and staff that help make the restaurant a success.

The book needs reworking big time. I wouldn't reccommend it.

Communication is the key.......2007-03-23

This book raised my consciousness about the two way communication between dog and owner. It doesn't give many step by step directions about training but that can be found in reference books at the end of the book. Perhaps understanding the relatiionship with our pets is a bigger step before attempting specific training. I found myself much more sensitive to my dog after reading this.

An Excellent Guide.......2007-03-05

This was a superb book. It confirmed so many things I knew about dogs...the very same things I had a difficult time convincing "expert" trainers about! It also taught me quite a few things by clarifying the subtle differences between several canine messages, by explaining the different behaviors of certain breeds of dogs, and by clearing up the issues of common misinformation.

This is a beautifully structured book. I was comfortable enough to read straight through it in two sittings. The sidebar exercises were fun and informative. The gentle training methods used in this book work with the dog's natural behaviors, easing stress on both species. Not to be forgotten, the book was a lot of fun, too.

Included in the index is a nice resource section packed with websites, mailing addresses, and telephone numbers of noteworthy organizations. There are even sections in the book that touch briefly on canine massage techniques and the possibility of telepathic communication with dogs. Chapter 12 deals solely with various events and competitions dogs can enter and enjoy.

This is a great book for anyone interested in strengthening the bond they share with their canine companion(s).

This is a perfectly wonderful book to give to not only those that already have a great relationship with their dog and want to further their knowledge of canine-human communication, but also to those that would like to know how to develop one. I've always wanted to find "just the right book" I could share with people I've come across that have very little or no idea how to properly relate to their dog(s)- WITHOUT offending or boring them. This book is it! It has a catchy title that doesn't scream "ho-hum instruction manual", and it's written in a unique style that is a natural page turner, packed with interesting anecdotes as well as well-researched information that gives rise to amazing insights. Thousands of dogs will be healthier and happier for their owners to have read this gem of a book.

The BEST DOG BOOK EVER.......2004-05-26

The Rosetta Bone is the best dog training, dog communication, human/pet love stories book I have ever read (and I have a shelf full to which I often refer). Learning to read my dogs' body language and gaining an awareness of how they read mine, has opened a new dimension of fun and sharing in our relationship. They and I are more responsive to each other and take more joy in the time we spend together each day. This book is a must read for the person acquiring their first dog, experiencing behavior problems with a current animal, or wanting to communicate with their dog on a deeper level. Cheryl Smith's insights into how dogs communicate (top dogs give a disdainful look--they don't jerk misbehavig subordinates or roll them on their back) turns training into play time and enhances the dog's life with its people. Thanks to the Rosetta Bone the time I spend with my dogs is more relaxed and joyful. Thanks Cheryl Smith--you've done the dog loving world a great favor with this great book!

The bandwith of this book is impressive. The photos are better than the narrative, but this book contains some interesting surprises.

A Lighter Encyclopedia.......2002-12-25

This books shows you the lighters and gives a history of the lighter company. Many lighters. It doesn't give values of lighters, but its practically an encyclopedia on lighters..

Not only for lighter collectors.......1998-09-23

Ad's book includes phantastic photography and an interesting concept regarding matching the things. The focus is not the jewel stuff one can always find in such books. It is the reflection of pure fascination of lighters, their history, function and the thrill of fire making history. Most important is the fact that the book adresses to the NON-collector as well as to the collector but more to the former. People that do not know anything about the subject will be fascinated by it. Although I am a collector I always read it again and again.

This book is huge and a most for garden reference. It's organized in seven chapters that will impress all kind of taste:

The New Naturalism: Beautiful gardens from NY, Idaho, France, Arizona, England.

The Cottage Garden Reinvented: Lovely gardens from England, France and Ireland.
The New Modernism: The best and trendiest gardens of California.

You'll be able to see some of the best gardens from places such as Arizona to Japan. Some of my favorites gardens where from England, The Netherlands and France.

The text is pleasant to read and full of details no only about the flowers portrayed but also to the architect and artist that created such beauty. The balance of text and picture is excellent. The quality of the pictures is excellent, full pages pictures trout the book. House and Gardens did a tremendous job and it's absolutely clear that the took at least ten times the number of pictures in the book since you'll only see the best angle and light possible for each picture.

The only con is the lacks of tropical gardens since most part of the book are focus on the northern hemisphere.

Big book, big gardens, big budgets.......2006-02-28

This coffee table book features private gardens and estates of the wealthy who have the funds to hire the most talented garden designers in the world to realize their visions. Most of the gardens featured are in the U.S. although a few are in England and Japan. Chapters are divided by varying styles, such as classicism, traditionalism, naturalism, cottage garden, modernism, etc. It is an eclectic collection, from minimalist elegance to lush romantic woodlands. Sculptures, art work, water features and stone work are a feature in many.

Chapter names tout the garden designer which includes such talents as Patrick Chasse, Dan Pearson, Jacques Wirtz, Dan Kiley, Piet Oudolf, Martha Swartz, Sarah Raven, Christian Louboutin, Isabelle Greene, Penelope Hobhouse, Topher Delaney and Steve Martino. The owners of the gardens are rarely mentioned (with the exception of actors Brad Pitt and Tim Curry and a few others). Although the text is often stuffy and oft-putting, the photographs alone are reason enough to purchase the book. This beautiful book is wonderful for garden dreamers who will find gardens such as these unattainable.

I have the older edition described above and I thought it was the greatest thing until now. My main disappointment in that edition was the number of b/w prints. Kitaj is a superior draftsman whose work brings in a lot of outside allusions - it looks like the work of a great and active mind that knows about things you yourself have no knowledge of - almost as if he lives on another planet, really. Anyway, whatever it is you know about, the drawing is what makes this great. Kitaj draws eyes better than anyone I can think of. I'd love to read more about his response to the critical panning he received in England recently.
