Customer Reviews:
Fun book to read.......2007-08-12
Very entertaining... I love Las Vegas and enjoyed reading all the latest escapades of Maddie and 'the gang'. too funny!
Killer in High Heels.......2007-07-08
This is a quick read, perfect for the beach. I loved the characters and the fast moving story line. It kept me laughing too.
Just a Dumb Blonde.......2007-04-07
This book was definitely not as good as the first in the series. Although Maddie is a fun character, she is written as a compete ditz. She doesn't know the first thing about investigating crimes, she makes some really unintelligent choices, and her best friend is a borderline hooker. I'm not sure that writing about a ditzy blonde female is the way to win over readers. The plot was very loose - Maddie discovers her father is a cross dresser in Vegas and seems to have some connection to a crime she heard over the phone. The relationship between Maddie and her estranged father could have been developed furter, but Maddie really only has a few conversations with a father she hasn't known or seen her entire life. The only interesting part about the book is the cop - Jack Ramirez. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but after getting to know Maddie better I'm less inclinedto read any more of this fluffy mystery series.
A sinful sequel!.......2007-03-26
Since her brush with death last summer, when she got caught up in a scandal involving a slightly bizarre stabbing incident involving a breast implant and a sexy stiletto - not to mention a hunky detective named Ramirez - twenty-six-year-old Maddie Springer has wanted nothing more than to get back to her old life as an L.A. shoe designer, creating sketches of Spiderman flip-flops and Rainbow Brite jellies for her employer, Tot Trots Children's Shoes; avoid the hundreds of sit-ups that her health-obsessed best friend, Dana, has in store for her; and attempt to forget about Ramirez and the fact that he hasn't called her in over six weeks. Unfortunately, the constant calls from various tabloid reporters - namely Felix Dunn with the L.A. Informer - have made it quite impossible for her to forget her days as an amateur sleuth. And now, as she receives a crazy phone call from her estranged father, Larry, Maddie feels herself being dragged back in to the world of solving crimes. Maddie hasn't seen Larry since the day he took off for Las Vegas with a smoking redhead named Lola, and knows him only by his overly-hairy arms. However, when she gets the call, she grabs Dana and her "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"-wannabe pal, Marco, and heads for Sin City to search for her MIA dad. Within days, Maddie feels accomplished, for she has actually managed to locate her father. Unfortunately, accompanying her estranged dad is an organized crime ring working to smuggle fake Prada shoes into the country, along with a group of fashion forward drag queens looking to make some extra money on the side, and a killer obsessed with one very important thing...seeking revenge. As if that weren't enough, Maddie has just stumbled upon a dirty little secret involving her lover-to-be, Ramirez, and a little undercover moonlighting in Las Vegas. Now, as Maddie begins investigating the various crimes taking place around her, she begins to suspect whether or not she'll be able to keep her title of "Lady Luck," or kiss it goodbye along with one extremely substantial factor...her life.
I'll admit it, I'm not easily taken with chick lit novels that dabble in the crime world. However, Gemma Halliday reeled me in with her debut SPYING IN HIGH HEELS, and has managed to do the same thing with the sequel KILLER IN HIGH HEELS. As with the previous installment, Halliday has presented Maddie as a fun-loving struggling artist looking to make ends meat in a dead-end job that has her creating children's designs for Payless as opposed to styling stillettos for Prada. Her whiny personality, complaints about doing anything physical - namely sit-ups - and penchant for stopping at every drive-thru within a five-mile radius of her apartment for high-calorie shakes, fries, and burgers are entertaining, and make her stand out from the crowd. However, it's the slew of supporting characters who easily make Halliday's efforts memorable. From the 300-pound psychic, Mrs. Rosenblatt, who appears to accompany Maddie's aging mother everywhere; to the over-the-top femininity displayed by the flamboyant Marco; all the way to Maddie's best friend, and resident heat-packing tough girl, Dana; to her matronly-dressed mother who loves to nag. And, of course, we can't forget the irresistible Ramirez whose five o'clock shadow, and ability to swear non-stop in Spanish makes him humorous, as well as eye candy - or, rather, page candy - for the reader, as well as Maddie. Fans of Halliday's debut will love seeing these characters brought to life once more, and will undoubtedly enjoy the introduction of new quirky characters, from Maddie's estranged father, to a handful of his slightly strange Vegas friends. Once more, Halliday has created a can't-put-down tale that will have readers itching for the next installment. A sinful sequel!

Murders in Vegas.......2007-03-20
I really loved Spying in High Heels so I was so excited to read this book. I was a bit disappointed in it. It was a fun read, but not nearly as great as the first book. The characters are still fun to read about, but this mystery seemed to drag on a bit for me. Hopefully, if there is one, the next book will be better.
Book Description
All Molly Forrester wants is to find that one big story that can redirect her journalism career away from the sex/relationship advice column she writes for Zeitgeist magazine ("wedged somewhere between Marie Claire and Cosmo") and back to the serious news business. But she didn't expect to trip over it, especially when "it" turned out to be the bloody body of one of her coworkers, and she certainly didn't expect to ruin her brand new Jimmy Choos over it. Never mind, though--she knows that solving the murder of one of the magazine world's most notorious lady's men will solve all her problems, including assauging her guilt for blowing a month's salary on a pair of shoes ruined in one night. All Molly needs is a little help from her girlfriends, and perhaps a few detecting lessons from that cute homicide detective...... Or is he cozying up because he thinks she's a killer?Sheryl Anderson delivers this totally charming, wildly clever, and puzzling debut about murder - and sex - in the Big Apple. What her characters find, is that, compared to negotiating Manhattan's singles scene, solving one eensy teensy stabbing shouldn't be that big a deal, right?

Good First Mystery.......2007-09-20
I enjoyed this book. It wasn't the best mystery I have read lately, but not bad for the first in a series. I will probably buy the other books by this author. Not nearly as good as Janet Evanovich, though.
Great debut novel.......2007-02-28
This was a fun read. The story was interesting and all the characters were likable. I thought the way the scenes between Molly and the detective were written were awesome. You can feel the chemistry between them jump off the page. It started slow but picked up the pace soon thereafter. I will definitely pick up the next book in the series.
SILLY BOOK.......2007-02-12
IT'S VERY DESCRIPTIVE AND THE ACTION IS DELAYED FOREVER - THEREFORE I CONSIDER IT A SILLY BOOK - A BOOK TO LEAVE UNFINISHED
Killer Debut.......2006-09-18
Molly Forrester writes an advice column for Zeitgeist, a Manhattan magazine. She'd like to write for a more prestigious magazine and sees her chance when Teddy Reynolds, advertising director for Zeitgeist, is murdered and she literally stumbles over his body at the magazine offices. Molly wants to try and sell the story of Teddy's murder from her viewpoint and decides to try and solve the murder herself as an additional selling point for the article. She has another incentive to solve the murder - hunky police detective Kyle Edwards seems to think Teddy's wife, Helen, killed him and Molly is convinced that the real killer works at the magazine. Soon Molly realizes that many people have secrets, secrets they want to keep, even if it means killing again.
"Killer Heels" is an excellent first book in what looks to be a fun series. Molly is a great heroine, both spunky and resourceful. Her best friends, Cassady and Tricia, are also likable. I'm not a "Sex and the City" fan and was a bit wary about reading a book with constant references to designer clothes and shoes, but they didn't bother me at all, in fact they added to the fun tone of the book. There's plenty of humor as well as suspense in the book. The mystery is well plotted with some red herrings along the way to keep a reader guessing who the murderer is.
This is a nice humorous mystery and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Great new fun murder mystery.......2006-06-15
Molly Forrester is a journalist for Zeitgeist magazine that is stuck in a rut. She wants to be writing the hard hitting stories but is stuck writing the sex/relationship column. This changes when she takes here friend back to the office one night to see a hideous piece of art the office is now displaying and trips over the body of one of her coworkers. She sets out to solve the murder of this coworker especially when it looks like the police are not heading in the correct direction. Molly sees this story as the one that will make her career. Molly is able to unravel the life of her coworker and suddenly there are a number of suspects as apparently the man is cheating on his wife and his lover. Motives are all over the place. Molly calls on her girlfriends to help as well as picking the brain of the homicide detective to solve the crime faster than the police.
Loved this story. If you like Charmed, Kate White's books and the "Wedding Mysteries" by Deborah Donnelly you will like this book. It was a well written fun and light mystery.

Three for the Price of One.......2000-06-22
This is a great book to get, because it is actually three Xanth books in one. The first one, Centaur Aisle, is the fourth book in the series, and continues the mix of humorous puns, romance, and fantasy adventure as Dor is left in charge of Xanth as King Trent takes a "vacation" to Mundania (Earth). However, when the King goes missing, Dor must set out to find him, so he treks to the Southern most reaches of Xanth, the entrance to Mundania is of course to the North.
Book 5 Ogre, Ogre is a endearing tale of an Ogre who goes out on a quest, but forgets what it was he was questing for near the start of his trek. Nothing to fear though, everything works out in the end.
Book 6, Nightmare is a story about one "horses" dream to see the rainbow. Before she can though, she must save Xanth from the latest wave of Mundanians, Solve the problem of the disapearing Kings, and deal with the dastardly Horse man. All will be revealed by the end of the novel.

Book Description
Imagine this: You're at a campsite 10,000 feet up in the Third Mono Creek Recess of the high Sierras. You have no refrigerator, no food processor, no non-stick cookware, no measuring spoons, no pepper mill, no sea salt. How are you going to cook a meal that is imaginative, delightful, and delicious? That's what The Leave-No-Crumbs Camping Cookbook is all about.Rick Greenspan and Hal Kahn show anyone who loves the outdoors how to make homemade pizza, braid challah, wrap poached trout in a sushi roll, and even make dumplings for Chinese dim sum at their campsite.
Campers who have never cooked anything more complicated than s'mores might feel uncertain about tackling chocolate mousse in the wild, but Greenspan and Kahn have three decades of experience teaching camp-out cooking. "We've taught people who could barely boil water," they say. And they are reassuring about trailside mishaps. If your grilled trout falls into the fire, take it out, brush off the ash, and rename the dish Cajun Blackened Trout. If the eggs break in their plastic container, make a dinner of crépes, huevos rancheros, and a cake. "The point of wilderness cooking is to have fun," say Greenspan and Kahn, "not worry if the Académie Française is looking over your shoulder." You'll find recipes for soups and stews; fruit, vegetable, and tofu dishes; pilafs, risottos, and polenta; pasta, noodles, and dumplings; sauces and schmeers (that's Yiddish for spreads); pancakes, crépes, and soufflés; pizza and quiche. An entire chapter is devoted to trout, and the book even includes a recipe for chocolate cake. There are instructions and tips for all sorts of of cooking techniques, including dehydrating, baking in coals or on a camping stove, grilling, frying, and steaming. And several pages are devoted to trip planning: how much food to bring, what to look for in a camp stove, how long you can expect your cooking fuel to last. This book is perfect for car campers, backpackers, bikers, canoeists, tail-gaters, and day picnickers who want good food to be part of the outdoor experience

Cooking When Camping.......2007-07-13
This "camping cookbook" has some very good ideas in it. Most of the recipes, however, do not seem to practical for tent camping considering the lack of storage and refrigeration. Using a home dehydrator is an excellent idea. If one were camping with an RV these recipes would be very useful.
Makes me think, makes me laugh.......2007-04-28
I spent an hour contemplating and chuckling over the first 50 pages... and I have 150 more pages to go. A quality cookbook is one that provides a fresh perspective on techniques and/or ingredients. If you're looking for simple camping fare, then you don't need a cookbook - stick a hot dog on a stick and you're happy. And who can blame you? But if you're reaching for an altogether different outdoor cooking paradigm, grab this book.
Just another gourmet cookbook.......2005-03-14
I was hoping that this would be a more useful camping cookbook. It is really a gourmet cookbook that tries to be a camping cookbook by using "sierra cup" as a unit of measurement (a "sierra cup" is a fancy backpacking cup purchased at trendy outdoor stores, and holds about 9 ounces)and by illustrating it with camping pictures and artwork. The ingredients for most of the recipes require access to gourmet and specialty stores.
When I go camping, I like to camp. I like to fish, hike and enjoy the outdoors. If you use this cookbook, you need to be someone who likes to cook. And I mean really likes to cook. In fact, camping must be something that you do to impress your friends with how environmentally conscious you are, while you whip up a meal of "Vegetarian Chicken Lemon Grass Soup" and "Spinach & Roasted Peppers Risotto." These are great sounding dishes that I would order at an expensive restaurant, but not something that I would want to spend hours preparing over my Coleman stove while the trout are biting.
The book tries really hard to be a camping book (remember the "sierra cup" thing?). But, it refuses to call a biscuit a biscuit. The book refers to them as scones. Scones are cool when sitting at an outdoor table at Starbucks discussing the evils of a capitalistic society with your liberal friends, but come on, when camping, I eat biscuits!
All in all, if you like gourmet recipes and gourmet cooking, and don't mind spending endless hours hunting down exotic ingredients, this is a good book. If you like to enjoy the outdoors, ditch this book, put together some simple, good food and go enjoy!
Move Over Wolfgang Puck.......2004-09-15
For those of us who like to cook, camp and eat well, this book has no peer. If you love to cook anyway, this is the book for you. If you don't, stick with the premade stuff you buy at the sporting goods stores as the home prep is critical and time consuming. For me, it was heaven. And the rewards paid off in spades at the campsite because you merely "just add water" to create meals worthy of the finest home dinner party (as proof - we're home and I made one of the recipes for a dinner party this week!). Thank you Rick and Hal for changing the face of camp food -- and for your bright, witty text that made it even more of a pleasure. I can't wait for the sequel.
Gourmet Ultralight Backpackers Rejoice.......2004-06-22
The fact that everything tastes good outdoors has kept campers eating shoe leather and birdseed for years. This is for the serious back country gourmet who will go just about anywhere and do anything to eat well once they get there. Be prepared to break out the food dehydrator and camping oven. However, recipes like steamed Chinese dumplings and "The Most Dangerous Cake in the Wilderness" are good enough to serve at home. The book is lightweight at 17 ounces, yet packed with tasty ideas. "Leave No Crumbs" is the best kind of camp companion: it kept us well fed and laughing.
Customer Reviews:
Overly focused on showing/competitions.......2004-02-09
This book is great if you're looking to figure out whether your shih tzu is showable and can participate in competitions. Other than that, there are far more helpful books out there in terms of puppy care, how to work with and train a shih tzu, etc. I didn't learn anything from this book since I don't intend to show my dog. There isn't anything else in this book that is unique or particularly well done. If you do want to show your furry friend... this might be for you
A Good Place to Start.......2000-06-12
"The Guide to Owning a Shih Tzu" is a good book for initial information regarding the Shih Tzu. It gives brief information on the Shih Tzu's history, standard, grooming, feeding, training and health. The pictures are charming... as are most Shih Tzu. This is a good place to start if you are looking for a book to introduce you to this breed.
Very lightweight vis-a vis the title.......1999-01-21
Apart from the history which was interesting, the contents covered the other topics in a very cursory fashion. The book was long on emotion as to "how marvellous your wonderful new puppy is" but gave little practical information on what a new owner wants to know as far as puppy care is concerned(first night at home, house training etc) which were glossed over in a couple of sentences. Far more space (and lavish photos) taken on showing the dog and flossying it up - a lot of owners just want an everyday pet, not a prima donna.

Best helmet book reviewed by Colonel J's.......2005-08-21
If you are an imperial helmet collector, this should be the very first book you should buy. It is well laid out in English, and is a teaching volume. It offers for the collector, text and pictures comparing different types of helmets and the evolution of it that is not laid out in any other book. Bowman tried to do it several decades ago, and failed. The author here has succeeded in spades. A humble man, he starts off with a quote "A complete and absolutely correct study of spiked helmets is impossible to do. There will always be corrections to be made in holes to fill. Many thanks for your understanding." So yes, there are mistakes and yes there are holes, but considering it is only the first volume. It is tremendous. Volume 1 of what is to be at least three volumes. This one covers Infantry Regiments, Pioneer Battalions and General Officers. The book is 256 pages long, hardback and contains pictures that you just don't see elsewhere. The chapter breakdown is chapter one: The Story of the German Spiked Helmet. Chapter 2 : Helmets of the Reserve and Landwehr Troops. Chapter 3: Parade Plumes. Chapter 4: General Officers, General Staff, Adjutants, And Aid de Camp. Chapter 5 Imperial German Infantry Regiments. Chapters 6 Imperial German Pioneer Battalions.
Appendix A. is a regulation for officers and medical officers of 1911.
Appendix B. Lists the Infantry Regiments of 1914.
Appendix C. Is the Regulations Related to the Evolution of the Spiked Helmet.
Appendix D. Pioneer battalions.
The book is 6 x 9 in layout, so not the coffee table size of other Schiffer works. Much of the book consists of pictures of helmets, one per page and dominates the central section of the book the organization of the helmet layout and the completeness is wonderful. The printing of the photography leaves a lot to be desired. You really get the impression that the color separation was poor. It is difficult at times to tell the difference between silver and gilt. Knowing the huge problems the author had with quality control, I can understand a frustration here.
There are certain items in this book that are absolutely invaluable. Appendix C. by itself is amazingly valuable. Appendix Ais translated into English and considerably shortened from the original, but still provides a wonderful resource of the regulation. The discussion of Parade plumes in Chapter 3 is unique in itself. There is a side-by-side lay down of officer and enlisted helmets-- -- this is extremely useful for less experienced collectors. Lots to find here, and loads to learn whether you are an advanced collector or a beginner, this is the book to buy.

Usefull book to get ideas of stone landscaping.......2006-02-03
I'm glad I bought this book.
In the first part there are lot of pictures about stone use in the garden (stairs, patios, walls, paths...). For someone who needs the ideas or insight of stone landscaping possibilities I would recommend it. Of course the number of examples is limited with the number of pages, but it is in accordance with the price.
In the second part are how to instructions which are also OK. This kind of instructions can be found also in other books, so for me the reason for buying this book would be the first part.
Xcellent!.......2002-12-15
You may only need this book on occassion, but when you do you will be very glad you have it. It proved indespensible for me recently!
Great for the amateur gardenscaper........2001-09-28
Easy to follow. Beautiful photos. A really nice collection of ideas and stone concepts. Lots of variety.
The sun has finally set on Sunset's 70's guide books - amen.......2000-03-02
This is a well designed, and obviously recently redone, book. The content is a "hot" subject in the landscaping industry particularly as stonework relates to low water/low maintenance outdoor spaces. Both the sculptural and "connection with nature" qualities of stonework are now in vogue as well. And people don't mind spending the money today to acquire the permancy, strength and beauty of good stonework. This book should get even the passive observer excited about the possiblities.
As a landscape designer, I'm constantly looking for good references and ideas that might not be common in my geographic area. This book does a very nice job of pictorally displaying dozens of stone-based designs and settings from all over the country (and possibly some internationally). The editorial content and organization of the chapters also contribute to the success of the book.
If you like to look at a lot of professionally shot pictures of professionally designed, stone-based landscaping (and get decent captioning for each picture) this book should more than satisfy you. The only issue I have is that the type was a bit small and therefor difficult to read. But for the price, this book was a really good investment. I only hope all of Sunset's books have been equally upgraded to more current designs in order to meet and exceed our expectations.
