Book Description

It is Syria in 1970, three years after the Six Days War. Michael Howell was utterly apolitical and genetically programmed for survival, a Levantine of mixed origin who possessed profitable business enterprises throughout the Middle East and an Italian mistress as his office manager. Life was sweet for Michael Howell until, one night in Damascus, he discovered that his factories had become the clandestine operations base of the Palestine Action Force, a fanatical terrorist organization dead-set on destroying Israel. Suddenly, Howell is caught in the middle with nowhere to run. Eric Ambler is the recipient of four Gold Dagger Awards and one Silver. In 1975, he was named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.

4 out of 5 stars Ambler Turns his Eye to the Mideast.......2006-04-17

Eric Ambler had a talent for setting his stories in historically interesting places and times. In the 1930's he wrote about the rise of facism. After the War, he wrote suspense stories set behind the newly erected Iron Curtain. In the 1950's, he switched his focus to Southeast Asia and wrote about the newly emerging nations of the region in the aftermath of their wars of liberation. So it is not surprising that in 1972, Ambler moved his attention to the Middle East and the Arab Israeli conflict.

Michael Howell is a classic Eric Ambler character. Although he has an English last name, Michael Howell's family heritage is principally a mix of Lebanese Armenian and Greek Cypriot. He is a member of that class of creative Eastern Mediterrean businessmen who over the centuries have successfully engaged in commerce in the notoriously difficult business climate of the Middle East. To survive in that harsh world, a businessman needs to be cosmopolitan, quick witted and highly imaginative. Michael Howell's family shipping business is doing well until he becomes unintentionally involved in the Palestinian Israeli conflict.

When Ambler is at his best, "Passage of Arms", "Judgement for Delchev" or a "Coffin for Demetrios", he is one of the finest political suspense writers to have ever graced the genre. The "Levanter" is very good but it is not one of his classic books. Start with the classics and when you have exhausted them, move to his second tier works like "The Levanter." Even his second tier works are very good.

To read or not to read the great espionage novels of Eric Ambler? That is the question most people ignore because they are not familiar with Mr. Ambler and his particularly talent.

Mr. Ambler has always had this problem. As Alfred Hitchcock noted in his introduction to Intrigue (an omnibus volume containing Journey into Fear, A Coffin for Dimitrios, Cause for Alarm and Background to Danger), "Perhaps this was the volume that brought Mr. Ambler to the attention of the public that make best-sellers. They had been singularly inattentive until its appearance -- I suppose only God knows why." He goes on to say, "They had not even heeded the critics, who had said, from the very first, that Mr. Ambler had given new life and fresh viewpoint to the art of the spy novel -- an art supposedly threadbare and certainly clich?-infested."

So what's new and different about Eric Ambler's writing? His heroes are ordinary people with whom almost any reader can identify, which puts you in the middle of a turmoil of emotions. His bad guys are characteristic of those who did the type of dirty deeds described in the book. His angels on the sidelines are equally realistic to the historical context. The backgrounds, histories and plot lines are finely nuanced into the actual evolution of the areas and events described during that time. In a way, these books are like historical fiction, except they describe deceit and betrayal rather than love and affection. From a distance of many years, we read these books today as a way to step back into the darkest days of the past and relive them vividly. You can almost see and feel a dark hand raised to strike you in the back as you read one of his book's later pages. In a way, these stories are like a more realistic version of what Dashiell Hammett wrote as applied to European and Middle Eastern espionage.

Since Mr. Ambler wrote, the thrillers have gotten much bigger in scope . . . and moved beyond reality. Usually, the future of the human race is at stake. The heroes make Superman look like a wimp in terms of their prowess and knowledge. There's usually a love interest who exceeds your vision of the ideal woman. Fast-paced violence and killing dominate most pages. There are lots of toys to describe and use in imaginative ways. The villains combine the worst faults of the 45 most undesirable people in world history and have gained enormous wealth and power while being totally crazy. The plot twists and turns like cruise missile every few seconds in unexpected directions. If you want a book like that, please do not read Mr. Ambler's work. You won't like it.

If you want to taste, touch, smell, see and hear evil from close range and move through fear to defeat it, Mr. Ambler's your man.

On to The Levanter. In this novel, we find Mr. Ambler operating at his full powers, combining remarkable character development with complex plots and delicious ambiguity. You will be reminded of Mr. Le Carre.

Uncharacteristically, his protagonist, Michael Howell, is a man of great intelligence, sophistication and subtlety. So he can take on a greater threat than anyone else. Fascinated by the problem of extracting his family's investments from Lebanon, he's been collaborating with the government in covert activities. This backfires when he accidentally learns that one of his factories has been taken over by the Palestinian Action Force as a base for terrorist activities. Howell finds himself forced to help implement an anti-Israeli raid. How will he overcome this challenge?

Howell is one of Ambler's best characters, full of moral ambiguity. He's so good at looking out for his own interests, that he constantly is taking advantage even of those who are trying to take advantage of him. In this book, we get a sense of the mental and moral toughness of a trader. I found the book to seem immensely realistic.

The story telling is strengthened by varying the role of who the narrator is so that you see more dimensions of the plot. Part of the story is told by Howell, part by Lewis Prescott (a journalist hose attempting to sort out what really happened) and part by Teresa Malandra (Howell's co-worker in Lebanon and mistress). I'm sure that small businessmen in Middle Eastern countries still face the issues exposed in this plot, which makes the story chillingly timely, even though it is set in the late sixties.
Howell's solution to the problem is quite original and interesting. I think you'll enjoy it.

After you finish this story, think about where your principles are compromised by the actions of others who are outside your control. How can you ensure that those inadvertent compromises do no harm?

A Levanter is an inhabitant of the Levant, the countries of the eastern Mediterranean.

I am new to Eric Ambler. In recent months I have read and reviewed two stories from his early career, A Coffin for Dimitrios (1939) and Journey into Fear (1940), one from his mid-career (The Light of Day, 1962), and now his 1972 novel, The Levanter.

His early writing career was interrupted by WWII. Entering as a private in the Royal Artillery and serving in Italy, Ambler was later assigned to a combat photographic unit. Ambler ultimately earned the rank of lieutenant colonel and although British, he was even awarded an American Bronze Star.

His postwar career focused more on writing screenplays for Hollywood and television, but he did continue to write an occasional new espionage story. The Levanter (1972) was among his last books.

His early stories have exciting plots, but his early characters lack the fascinating complexity of his misguided and all-to-clever protagonist, Michael Howell, found in the Levanter. I quite enjoyed The Levanter and I believe that it compares favorably with the early John LeCarre novels.

In The Levanter Ambler tells a story through the eyes of three characters: Lewis Prescott (an experienced journalist interested in Michael Howell's situation) in chapters 1, 3, and 8, Michael Howell himself in chapters 2, 4, 6, and 7; and Teresa Malandra (Michael's secretary and lover) in chapter 5.

The setting is 1970 Syria, three years after the Six Days War. The Baathist Party, in power since 1963, has been steadily nationalizing all industry and Michael Howell considers his family's (third generation) commercial holdings at great risk. His plans to cleverly shelter his Syrian operations come apart when he involuntarily becomes an integral component in a plot to launch a substantial terrorist attack on Israel.

I was disconcerted by one aspect of Ambler's story. Despite the passage of three decades, The Levanter still reads like a contemporary novel. Today, for political and security reasons Israel still holds territory acquired during the Six Days War while the Syrian Baathist party continues to covertly (and not so covertly) support terrorist activities against Israel.

3 out of 5 stars Charming in an Old Fashioned Way.......2003-03-11

"The Levanter" is one of the original (copyright 1974) Terrorist novels that are very popular today.

It is 1972 and the Middle east is changing (again), in response to the Israeli victory in the Six-day war and the pressures of the Palestinians refugees on neighboring countries. The main protagonist is a western businessman, the owner of a firm long established in the Middle east. A Palestinian group threatens the man, his family, and firm to use them to strike against Israel. The man threads a tangle of personalities, movements, obligations, and politics to preserve everything he cares about.

This is a good read from a historical point of view. The author has a familiar, although now considered old-fashioned style (probably the result of much copying). In fiction, it shows how little has changed in the Middle east in the last thirty-years.

Lots of Stephen King fans feel that his horror novels are dwarfed by what they consider his masterpiece, the genre-bending Dark Tower books. They're a little like the sprawling epics of J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and George Lucas, but then again, they're really like nothing else in this world (or King's).

This set collects the first three. The Gunslinger introduces the hero Roland, who must reach the Dark Tower in order to save his universe, Mid-World. There are passageways between our world and Mid-World, and a New York City boy named Jake gets shoved in front of a car by Jack Mort ("death"), is killed, and finds himself alive in Roland's world. He becomes Roland's surrogate son.

In book 2, The Drawing of the Three, Roland is attacked by marvelous, poisonous "lobstrosities" and enters our world for help. He takes heroin addict Eddie Dean from 1987 New York and Odetta Holmes from 1964 New York as his team. In a powerful time-tripping scene, Roland confronts Jack Mort and actually changes Jake's Earth history, which has heady implications for Roland's world.

In The Waste Lands, book 3, Roland and company get ensnared in a civil war in the urban waste of Lud, acquire a delightful talking pet named Oy the Bumbler, and find themselves captives of a psychotic train called Blaine the Mono.

The plot is complex, yet weirdly logical. But take warning: this series is addictive, and you may need to also buy book 4, Wizard and Glass. Otherwise, you won't know what happened when Blaine went insane with Roland's gang onboard.

5 out of 5 stars Foaming at the mouth for the next in the series!.......2003-10-18

This series is outstanding!!!! True King fans love it, and I think it's an interesting change for those who may not care for King's normal "horror" genre. Bits and pieces of this masterpiece are hinted at in many of King's other books,a nice "inside joke" for King's Constant Reader. This series grabbed me and would not let go! I've read them all at least twice and like the header says, I'm foaming at the mouth for the "Wolves of Calla" to come out. This is a beautiful set and a series that could be as much of a fantasy classic as the likes of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! Once you read the first page of just one in this series you'll be compelled to read every one of them!

                    5 out of 5 stars The Gunslinger.......2003-10-07

I was hook on the Gunslinger back in 1984, but was only able to find 2 of the series and only in paperback. I have been a fan of Stephen King since I was in the U.S. Army bootcamp. I have been checking every now and then to find the rest. Thanks to Amazon I've order the entire series and in hard bound.

5 out of 5 stars A must read; pleasantly addictive........2003-06-20

This series is the quite possibly Stephen King's greatest work! I've read the first four books in the last week; drugs are not nearly as addictive as the Dark Tower Series. I've definitely have becom a "TOWER JUNKIE". Do yourself a favor and buy this now; your only disappointment will be having to wait for the release of the next book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2003-02-05

This book ,in my opinion, is the greatest series I have ever read. If you ever wanted to read anything by Stephen King you should read this. The fact that I bothered to write a review (i usualy don't) speaks volumes about how truly amazing this story is.

With innovative individual and group exercises, challenging self-appraisals, a Daily Intention Journal, specific guidelines on managing conflict, special material for divorced and blended families, and much more, the workbook will show you how to be the best role model, guide and advocate for your child.

Dr. Phil makes you ask yourself the hard questions, and he reveals the hard truths. You are raising America's future; you must invest the time and energy to do it right. The reward -- a happy, fulfilled home life that lets your children thrive -- will be well worth the work.

This is a good book, a lot of good information is given and worth purchasing. The only exception, is that doesn't really speak to blended families so well or how a step-parent should deal with the trials which are faced and gone through especially when older children are involved.

I love biscotti, and found this book to have the best variety of recipes. This was the book I chose to give as a gift to two fellow biscotti lovers. The recipes are easy, and the end product is delicious.

I am a great lover of biscotti, especially since I have to watch my sugar intake. Because biscotti can be expensive, I decided to make this simple cookie and have quite successfully. However, this book is not the book to buy if one wants biscotti of good texture and taste. I remade one recipe (Almond Biscotti) and tried two others (Coconut Biscotti and Milk Chocolate & Honey) to see if I made a mistake or preferred another flavor, but none of them were worth the effort. They were dry and too hard. The recipes I found on-line and in magazines were much better. I'll try another book.

Both my Mom and I bought a copy of this book, because I love biscotti's. I've made them before and have always had great luck. But I made two recipes from this book. Both were so bad tasting that I threw the biscotti's and the book out. Then I called my Mom and told her she might want to throw out her book too, before she wasted her time and money making any of these recipes. I didn't even try to sell the book online because I would have felt guilty.

Comprehensive list of biscotti from sweet to savory. Biscotti isn't just for dessert! The combinations are interesting and I especially like the textureful No-Guilt biscotti with no oil or butter that includes whole wheat flour and bran. Also, wonderful triple ginger and the delicious and not too sweet Tuscan spice and almond. Many of the savory ones are good served with soup.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing and repetitive.......2005-06-22

I appreciate that this review area should be for the book, but I purchased the VHS of the same name and was extremely disappointed in the quality of the production and ideas being presented. If you are already familiar with clicker training you will probably be too advanced for this book - Shawna's only for complete beginners.

I've now read the book and am glad I didn't spend money on it. Highly repetitive and few ideas. Very basic information and some of the ideas may even put you on a different path from more recognised clicker trainers - such as the treatless click. BTW Shawna doesn't call her system clicker training simply for the ability to TM her marketing material.

If you are looking for a really excellent book on clicker training I would purchase the Alexandra Kurland books instead.

Update: I've just been to see a clinic with Shawna and have to repeat that I think this author is a bit light on theory. Shawna's background is as a trainer at Sea world so she has great presentation skills and can talk in a very entertaining way. However, she has fewer ideas on training and a lighter knowledge of operant conditioning (which is what clicker training is) than Kurland. If you knew nothing about clicker you would have enjoyed the clinic however I got very little out of it. Most worryinig is her lack of understanding (or ability to explain) the other consequences of operant conditioning which are still important for horse training.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to clicker training.......2005-06-16

This is a solid introduction to clicker training. You start by teaching your horse to associate the sound of the clicker with a treat, then use the motivation of the reward to shape behavior. I got my horse to willingly accept the bridle in one day after reading this book.

I would offer three cautions to prospective purchasers of this book. First, there are three keys to training, regardless of method. First you have to figure out how to break your goal into steps small enough for the horse to get. Then you have to time the reward (the click in clicker training, or the release of rein or leg pressure in John Lyons, Monte Roberts, Clinton Anderson, etc. method) Finally you have to patiently and diligently perform your training over the necessary weeks to achieve results. Use a bad plan, reinforce the wrong thing with bad timing, or don't put in the work and no book can help you.

Second, while clicker training can be a very efficient means of shaping behavior, I had difficulty using it to improve my leadership relationship with my horse. If your horse is spooky under saddle, he's telling you he feels like he's on his own. No matter how much desensitizing I did on the ground, my horse still got nervous on the trail. After one session of lunging for respect from Clinton Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship, his attitude and confidence was transformed. So you might not want to limit your training technique to just clicker training.

Third, I thought the book bogged a little bit in the description of the scientific basis for operant conditioning and the author's journey from training sea mammals to horses. All good material, but it's not why I bought the book. I would have vastly preferred more practical horse technique. The video has a lengthy talking head section on theory, which I found very frustrating. Show us the horses!

Those three caveats aside, I believe clicker training is a useful tool that anyone who trains horses should comprehend, and this is probably the best introduction to it.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to clicker training.......2004-01-12

An excellent introduction to the beginner, this book gives you a step by step guide to clicker training your horse - And it works! Although I don't use the technique on a daily basis, I have found it particularly useful in overcoming problems like mane pulling, accepting dewormer, desensitizing ears, etc.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Train Your Horse to do Almost Anything!: On Target T.......2003-09-11

Incredible! I just recently heard of this method so I bought the book. I applied the method to a 10 year old mare who had the following problems: Hard to catch, high strung, generally rotten disposition, scared to stand for the stallion, the list goes on. I am NOT a horse trainer, but the mare was headed for an uncertain future, so I figured I'd give this a try. Within our first two weeks she in now easy to catch and comes on the run when she sees me in or near her pasture. She willingly picks up her feet for farrier work, will back up straight for 35 feet on a voice command given from 10 feet away (no halter), she calmly follows me around the yard without restraint - even when we stroll past the stallion's gate. Within the next week she will be ridden for the first time and I expect, with her new calmness, she will return to the broodmare band in the spring.

                          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-05-07

This wonderful book is true to its name. I have taught my horse such highly advanced skills as rearing up on command and spitting. Getting creative, I tried this training method on the neighbor's girl that I baby sit. Highly effective. I am very pleased.

The large middle section, pages 136-370, is a catalog of mostly color photographs of Czech glass of the period covered done by the leading, most artistically skilled, glassmakers. This bountiful catalog demonstrates why Czech glass has in the relatively short time since the 1970s when it became widely known throughout Europe and other Western countries one of the most sought-after types of art glass. But the catalog is only the beginning of the varied, extensive content of this coffee-table size work of value to those with a specialized, well-developed interest in the field of glass. Eight introductory essays by experts cover Czech glass from its artistic and historical origins through its worldwide recognition largely from a 1959 exhibition in Moscow and designs for glass works kept at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. Back matter (appendices) include bibliographical annotations of the glass artists; which besides their photographs, includes awards, exhibitions, and references in printed works. The back section after this has facsimiles of all of the artists' signatures. There are also informative sections supplementing the essays preceding the catalog. From aesthetic appreciation of the glass to information on the artists and the industry to crucial technical material such as signatures and more, "Czech Glass" contains everything anyone could be looking for on this subject.

                                Book Description

When the tenth-century Kamil as-sinaba (or al-Kitab al-malaki) of bAli ibn al-bAbbas al-Magusi was adapted for a Latin-reading audience by Constantine the African in the late eleventh century, the medieval West had, for the first time, the opportunity to use a text which covered the whole of medicine. But the 100-odd extant manuscripts suggest that Contantine's Pantegni was put together over a considerable period of time, and chapters from other Latin and newly-translated Arabic medical works were added to or substituted those of the Kamil. This book is the first to be devoted to Constantine the African: it sheds light on the School of Salerno and the formation of a medical corpus in the High Middle Ages.

Born in Brooklyn in 1865, Mary White Ovington carried, throughout her long life, a fine sense of the abolitionist spirit that had so quickened her parents' generation. A lively but somewhat unfocused intellectual, she drifted through social circles and movements until, at the age of 36, she met the African American educator Booker T. Washington and, shortly afterward, the activist W.E.B. Du Bois. Her eyes, writes Carolyn Wedin, opened wider when she took a tour of the South in 1906, in the wake of a series of bloody race riots. Ovington returned to New York convinced that matters could improve for African Americans only through well-coordinated political organization that would demand, among other things, voting rights and social justice. In 1909, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, Ovington issued a call to renew the struggle for political and civil liberty. Organizing parades, antilynching protests, and conferences, the resultant National Association for the Advancement of Colored People became an important vehicle for the emerging civil rights movement, one whose leaders and members endured many hardships as they spread their message across the country. As Inheritors of the Spirit reveals, Ovington's life stands as an example of moral courage and dedication to a noble cause. --Gregory McNamee

"By highlighting the life of a key figure in the NAACP Wedin has given us a welcome addition to the literature of that organization."—Library Journal

"In its densely researched, sensitively interpreted, and crisply written evocation of her subject's career, Professor Wedin's biography opens a wide window onto much of the inner life of the NAACP as it evolves from a virtual one-person show scripted by the incomparable (and sometimes insufferable) Du Bois through the unflappable stewardship of James Weldon Johnson and the manic operational brilliance of Walter White to become, in classic Weberian progression, a well-honed bureaucracy of lawyers, accountants, field secretaries, and lobbyists—and, overwhelmingly, of African Americans . . . a vibrant, valuable chronicle of an eighty-year dedication to economic, racial, and gender justice."—from the Foreword by David Levering Lewis
