Book Description
Seeker, adventurer, pilgrim, and scholar, David-Neel (1868–1969) was the first European woman to explore the once-forbidden city of Lhasa. This memoir offers an objective account of the supernatural events she witnessed during the 1920s among the mystics and hermits of Tibet — including levitation, telepathy, and the ability to walk on water. Includes 32 photographs.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent glimpse of Tibetan spirituality.......2007-09-23
This book present an excellent overview of Tibetan spirituality and the various practices that occur within that spirituality. Perhaps what I liked the best was that the author seemed to avoid incorporating Western cultural biases into her description. Indeed she seemed very intent on describing the practices in an accurate manner.
I was able to take her description of tumo and actually incorporate it into my daily practice. I've also used her chod ritual.
a great book.......2007-05-13
This is information you will find nowhere else. A fascinating book
on the mysterious world of Tibet at the beginning of the last century.
Tibetan Buddhism in Practice.......2006-08-23
While many books about Buddhism and other historically eastern religions focus on high theology, the book describes Tibetan Buddhism as it was practiced in the early 20th century. It is fascinating.
I first read this book in college and have just read it again after many years. It was better the second time around.
The first time, I was entranced by the accounts of exotic magic and mystery. This time I searched for themes and Ms. David-Neel's viewpoint. Dealing with death is the primary theme underlying at least the popular practice of this religion. As for Ms. David-Neel, I was interested in her viewpoint and experience as a Buddhist who did not find the Tibetan version to be her paricular brand. Because of her distance from this version of Buddhism, her accounts of events that she saw or experienced personally are particularly interesting.
Diverting.......2005-03-29
I suppose that Madame David-Neel was truly interested in practicing Buddhism as a means to enlightenment. After all, she went to a great deal of trouble to get to Tibet, learn Tibetan, meet lamas, stay in mountain retreats and borderland monasteries. She must have been a sincere seeker.
But perhaps the idea of a European actually learning truth from "Orientals" was too much for the reading public to handle. Perhaps David-Neel was giving people what they wanted when she wrote about magicians and tricksters and assorted weirdness. Whenever she gets close to her own inner life, she suddenly clams up, saying things like, Whether it is true or not, I can't say, though I have had experiences, but never mind that.
In any case, I found the description of the practice of chod deeply moving. It shares characteristics with Christ's experience on Calvary, and only a deep compassion for all beings could impel one to visualize one's whole being being sacrificed for the salvation even of demonic beings. I wish David-Neel could have been a little less ironic and a little more open about her own passion to learn from the lamas.
Fascinating book, leaves you wanting more.......2003-03-03
This must be a classic book on Tibetan religion and mysticism. It is based on observations from some truly remarkable journeys in Tibet; I only wonder why the author restricts herself when relating what she has seen and heard. Part of the reason may be that she is a sceptical Western-style Buddhist and does not want to be judged as "airy-fairy" by her audience. Nevertheless, she tells of some absolutely fantastic occurences which are rendered even more authentic by her dry, understated style. A fearless person, she handles situations that would have scared most of us out of our wits! But for fear of ridicule, she could no doubt have written a much longer text on this subject.

Book Description
Mistislaus was a wizard. He was old, absentminded, and his potions and spells barely brought in enough money to put food on his table. In short, he was the last person who could be expected to raise a little girl -- in the normal run of things.
But since the Dark Elves had overrun Fairholm -- slaughtering any who resisted -- nothing ran in a normal course. Like it or not, Mistislaus found himself saddled with a baby. He called her Skyla. And Skyla, he soon learned, was a witch . . .
Little Skyla grew up knowing that she was no ordinary orphan -- she was heir to the proud name and magic of the true rules of Fairholm. And so she dared to dream. She learned from old Mistislaus, and she roamed the moors, learning the languages of animals. She molded tiny figures of mud and spittle, and she brought them to life. And she dreamed of avenging the parents she had never known and of claiming the fabled lost treasure the Dark Elves could not find . . .

Not what the title suggest.......2007-10-05
Although this book has some useful information it is not as the title suggest. It is not a "diet" book. I bought this book because my husband and I are trying to change our diet to a more PH balanced way of living. We have already found that by balancing the PH levels we can all but eliminated acid reflux. When I saw this book I thought it would have a list of alkaline and acidic foods and a diet plan to follow. This book is nothing more than testimony as to what vitamins you should take in order to achieve better health. The test that is referred to is nothing more than taking a supplement on an empty stomach, waiting for results and translating how red you are into the meat eater, grain eater or combo of the two. So again, while there is some useful information I would not have bought this book had I had a chance to flip through it before hand.
The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet.......2007-09-28
This book has such excellent research for a person who wants to have a happier healthy life from disease so there are good suggestions in how to change one's lifestyle for healthier living
Weight loss recipe is to eat acidic foods!.......2007-09-01
I have done extensive research in Acid Alkaline eating theories. I think this book should be called "Eating for Your Blood Type" instead of its Acid Alkaline title. They are two very different theories. The author talks a lot in the two beginning chapters about various supportive research for ridding your body of acids to try to improve your overall health. Then she provides a couple simple of tests (that may make you sick) to find out your metabolic type.
There is a thorough explanation of Dr. William Donald Kelley's theory of metabolic food typing from the 1970s. According to the book, Dr. Kelley has much luck in reversing chronic diseases based on his assumptions. The book suggests two options for quick tests to figure out your metabolic type: 1) Swallow 50 milligrams of niacin on an empty stomach. If, within a half-hour, your skin turns red and you feel very, very hot and itchy, he believes you have a meat-eating metabolism. Warmer and better color in your face, he believes you have a balanced metabolism. If you don't feel anything, he feels you have a grain-eating metabolism. 2) If you want to confirm the first test, he suggests you take 8 grams of vitamin C a day for 3 days in a row. If you feel depressed, lethargic, exhausted, and irritable, or if you are a woman and experience vaginal irritation, you suggests you have a meat-eating metabolism. If you don't notice a change, he suggests you have a balanced metabolism. But if you feel an improvement -- more energy, better quality of sleep -- he suggests you have a grain-eating metabolism.
Much of the rest of the book hinges on the diagnosis of the above tests -- which sound scary to put yourself through. I don't want to consciously make myself red, hot, itchy, depressed, lethargic, etc. So I felt cautious after reading this section in chapter 1.
I read chapter 2 and then went to the specific section of the book with my "medical condition" as suggested by the author. My condition is obesity. That chapter describes a case study of an obese 17-year-old girl for whom the author prescribed treatments. The girl, Cheryl, started off at 350 pounds. After following the author's advice, the girl stabilized at 270 pounds. The thing that alarmed me was the author's suggestions for weight loss. Here is her list from p. 72-73. She wants you to eat or use the following: Nearly raw potatoes, ice pack on lower abdomen, raw honey, raw milk and butter, raw beefsteak, avocadoes and bananas, Vitamin E, ChitoPlex, coconut and flaxseed oil, raw carrots, ACIDIC FOODS, bland foods, several small meals, blackstrap-lemon drink, ice water. I've capped the word "acidic foods" because it is in complete contradiction with the author's book subtitle "An Innovative Program for Ridding Your Body of Acidic Wastes". She wants you to eat acidic foods to reduce your hunger. But that is completely antithetical to the title of the book and the introduction. Why would I take in more acidic foods only to have to work to neutralize them and eliminate them later? Note that she pulls all her informaton from other doctors and does not have a medical degree herself. Her book jacket describes her as an "adjunct professor at City College in New York and an alternate health consultant". I wish I could talk to Cheryl and share with her some of the information I've gotten from other books on diet and nutrition. I'm sorry to say I think the author has given her some good advice and combined it with some very bad advice.
Buyer/Reader beware! I think this author should do some more research. I think this book could be very dangerous to the quality of health of anyone follows her advice 100%.
Not very useful.......2007-08-13
The author spends at least 80% of the book on specific inflictions which will make at least 75% of this book irrelevant to most readers. Very little information provided anywhere about the alkaline diet--more about "grain eating" vs. "meat eating" metabolisms and other unrelated material. Methinks the publisher named this book to sell more books, irregardless of the contents.
If you want a better idea about the tenants of the alkaline diet, including the pH effects of certain foods see books by Brown and Young.
The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet.......2007-07-18
As nasty as it may seem, our bodies are virtual garbage dumps. When we eat too much, or eat processed foods that our organs find hard to break down, our bodies can't work fast enough leaving waste within the body. Bacteria thrive in such environments. So begins the process of acidic waste collection in the body. The end result includes a wide range of medical problems from arthritis through insomnia to kidneys disease.
The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet looks to rebalance the system and remove this acidic waste from our system. The process is fairly complicated, mostly because each person's needs are different. Some individuals have a more acidic system while others have a more alkaline system. In each case, different diets and vitamin treatments are used to remove excess waste and bring the system back into stasis. Various tests that the reader can do for him or herself are included within the text enabling them to understand their particular issues and start to reduce these factors. Readers are also encouraged to see their homeopathic specialists for more in depth workups.
I am not really a vitamin person as I tend to like natural/organic alternatives. Therefore, I couldn't see myself sticking to this diet for any length of time. Nonetheless, I learnt a great deal from this book particularly the sections on ancestral diets and food allergies.

First of all, this is a beautiful book, from the basic design right through to the illustrations and the food photography. It's what quality cookbooks should look and feel like. It sets a standard. And the recipes collected and tested by the members of the San Francisco Junior League measure up to that standard in every way.
This isn't an upscale accumulation of everyone's favorite catered food or takeout treats. This is about thoughtful, flavorful, contemporary food you would serve to your family. It's definitely about food you would take the time and trouble to serve to guests of your family. It's food that takes into account the many ethnic influences of San Francisco and takes advantage of the fresh products that pour into that city's farmer's markets. San Francisco Flavors, in some ways, sends out a clarion call to all other cities to pay attention to nearby farmlands and the farmers who work the soil, and to establish farmer's markets in their own communities so everyone can know what real food is all about.
But the recipes. There are chapters devoted to appetizers, soups, salads, entrées, side dishes, brunches, beverages, and desserts. Therein you will find the likes of Ginger and Green Tea Sorbet, Strawberry-Mango Cobbler, Panfried Trout with Bacon and Sage, Fuji Apple and Ricotta Pancakes, Grilled Leeks with Hazelnut Vinaigrette, Curried Vegetable Stew, Chicken Pot Pie with Sage Biscuit Topping, Thai Shrimp with Coconut Rice, Asian Tri-Cabbage Coleslaw, Moroccan-Style Carrot Soup, and Toasted Walnut and Ginger-Garlic Dip. Where appropriate, San Francisco sommeliers suggest wines. And throughout the book, San Francisco chefs give their favorite tips. It really is a marvelous take on the kinds of terrific food being served in San Francisco by people who care about ingredients and what becomes of them.
All proceeds from Junior League books go back to their projects, the main ones being improving the community and supporting the family. In the case of this book, it's money well spent. --Schuyler Ingle

My Favorite Cookbook.......2004-11-07
I've had this book for over 2 years and have loved every recipe I've made from it, many of which have become standards in our house. Try the delicious and easy apple cake with hot caramel sauce, the chicken breasts with wild mushrooms and balsamic vinegar and the awesome chicken pot pie with sage biscuit topping. Easy to follow directions and nice tips from the chefs who submitted the recipes.
QUALITY.......2004-09-11
Other reviewers have already been descriptive. My opinion...the food is delicious. It is also what I call "clean" and "architectural"...it isn't covered with gloppy sauces. It is arranged on the plate clearly and attractively. We "eat" with our eyes and nose before our taste buds. You will be happy to have it in your library AND your purchase is supporting a good cause...a win/win situation. Rare in this era!
My favorite cookbook!.......2001-12-21
I concur with the other reviews on this site. This is my favorite cookbook, and I have quite a collection. The recipes are well-written, good cooking and preparation techniques are given in conjunction with the recipes, and the results always earn me kudos! Can't ask for too much more.
I have given this cookbook as a gift several times and have recommended it to my friends who love to cook.
Only cook book I have ever used........2001-12-18
Best cook book I ever used. it so easy to follow, you just prepare the incredients as directed and followed the directions. you can't go wrong. I tried using other cook books but only get frustrated trying to follow the instruction, but this book has simple and clrear instruction, anyone can follow it. one thing lacking limited pictures of what you are cooking, but not important.
Company Food that Reflects San Francisco.......1999-10-05
These recipes are for elegant, delicious dishes to serve your friends and family. They all reflect the ethnic and culinary influences that make up California cuisine, including tips from such people as Arnold Wong and Alice Waters. All of the food is fancy, but not everything is complicated: the Cambazola Apricots are an easy-to-make appetizer, while the Blueberry French Toast can be whipped up the night before for brunch. This is a must-own for anyone who loves food or who loves San Francisco.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-Have.......2007-03-28
Reading this book is like having an aquarium-expert friend to take shopping with you. The author tells you which fish are best for beginners, what fish shouldn't even be sold, what qualities a dealer should have, what equipment you should buy, what equipment is a waste of your money, what products are dangerous, what plants are no good but are sold for aquariums anyway, etc. I finally found answers to a lot of questions that other books didn't cover. The book discusses cleaning schedules, necessary floor strength, and moving concerns. It explains water chemistry as simply as possible. There is list of the author's favorite aquarium books and other info sources. He even tells you how you can reach him.
The reasons why I didn't give this book 5 stars are trivial: Hard to make out black + white photos and substandard proofreading. Still, everyone who has or wants an aquarium needs this book.
You have to read this if you are new to fishkeeping. Or you risk killing your fish........2006-03-17
Are you starting an aquarium? Well, I've been running one for a while, and my dad used to keep one, and I can definitely tell you that it is absolutely critical to have at least one fish book on hand in order to set up your fish tank properly.
To the book. So why is this so hyped and high rated? First of all, it doesn't lie. You will learn why water changes are important, what pH is, and why you don't keep oscars with neon tetras. You will learn how to position and set up your tank, and you will learn the difference between a canister and undergravel filter. And most importantly, you will learn how to keep fish. Like some others have said, this book does mainly focus on the care and setting up on the aquarium, so for the fish and plants it would help a lot to get a separate book that specializes in those, because his descriptions are not that detailed. However, I can nearly guarantee you that you will not fail in your aquatic endeavor with this guide at hand. Good luck, and may your filter never crash when you are on vacation.
The Complete Idiot's Guide To Freshwater Aquariums.......2005-09-12
This is a very good quide for the beginner. Mike walks through all the steps required for setup and maintaince of an aquarium. Gives good suggestions on fish & plants selections. If the steps in this book are followed the aquarist will have minimal problems to deal with.
Not much here for the experienced aquarist.
** For smart idiots! (who know what book to buy!)**.......2005-04-06
This is an informative, clear, funny, and brilliant book.
If you are just starting an aquarium, this is the book to get.
The beginning is all about the tanks, lights, and everything before the fish.
There is a section about fish but the photos are black & white so if you want to know more about the actual fish you probably want another book too.
Overall, a great book for beginners!
You MUST buy this book if you're starting an aquarium.......2004-06-18
WOW! This book was ESSENTIAL to our successful (and fun) entry into the world of fish and aquariums. Great tips, easy to follow directions and explanations of "what, why, when and why NOT", written in a funny (if somewhat corny) manner, this book is easy and fun to read. I actually found myself taking it on a trip - and trust me, I have NEVER taken a reference book on vacation unless I was expecting to work on vacation. So, this book gets five stars. Buy it used if you have to do so (we did). We bought five different aquarium books, and this one was the best, and we refer back to it often.

Saw like a pro.......2005-10-02
This book is a great primer. It covers all the essentials of choosing a table saw, setting up and operating a table saw. Plenty of pictures to illustrate the points the author is conveying. Plus there are plenty of tips to make sawing easier and accurate. Great book if you're a beginner with a table saw.
Concise, but surprisingly excellent.......2004-06-24
This was my first book on table saws, as I am about to buy my first table saw. Being an engineer, I know my way around power tools in general, but I was a bit concerned about proper techniques with regard to safety, how to prevent kickback, and some of the finer points of using the saw. This book has all the basic information - good for beginners - and has great captions on each and every (color) picture that help explain the equipment and concepts very well. This book is not for those who wish to do fancy woodworking and intricate furniture building - I'd recommend a book that describes the details and procedures for the various types of cuts/options in more depth. This book is great for anything short of that, highly recommended, a good comprehensive primer.
Book Description
“A thoroughgoing treatise.”—Fine Woodworking. “Cliffe, a professor and woodworking safety consultant, provides a complete guide to the most popular stationary power tools. After describing the table saw and its numerous blades and accessories, Cliffe shows how to perform a variety of cutting operations with the saw by itself or using shopmade jigs.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
Good book about table saws..........2005-07-07
This provides solid info and gives good data on usage of saws.
Buyer beware..........2003-05-02
I purchased this book and wish I had not. (Revised edition (c) 1997) It contains the most basic information which might be ok for a beginner but it is coupled with poor photographs and confusing (wrong?) information (i.e. The Taper Jig Text on pg 224 says "Measure back from hinge exactly 1-foot" yet the line illustration on Pg 222 clearly show's the 12inch measure from the Taper foot - the two directions are contradictory). The line drawings were helpful and pretty clear but as mentioned above I question their accuracy. I am not an expert and I did get a few bits of information from this book but nothing you could not find on the WWW.
Not a "good" book.......2003-02-28
Sorry, but I disagree with all the "good" reviews here. I made the mistake of reading them, then ordering the book. It is not worth the money, nor the time it takes to look at it.
The pictures all look like they are from a 1940's high school shop manual. Pictures lack detail and are blurry.
Descriptions of accessories are lacking in detail and don't seem to note "how to make" any of them.
My suggestion is to look elsewhere for "table saw techniques" rather than buy this book.
Sorry I didn't do so.
One of two excellent starter books for info on tablesaw use.......2002-12-24
I am just starting out in the world of being a hobbiest woodworker and I wanted books on the tablesaw to give information on proper setup, use, maintenance, and safety techniques (better to learn to keep your fingers right from the start). After reading the other (above) reviews of this book, I purchased it. It turns out to be a wonderful source of information for the beginner. I team this book with "Woodworking - The Right Technique" by Bob Moran as two volumes a beginner should have (and read thoroughly) before embarking on using your tablesaw. Everytime I re-read either of these volumes, I pick up something new that I didn't pay attention to the first time.
This book (along with the the Moran book) are highly recommended.
Excellent in depth book.......2002-11-19
As a hobbiest, it is sometimes difficult to find a serious book that is not a proffesional technical publication. Most are either too elementary for someone who has used table saws for years, or too technical for someone who is not a professional wood worker.
This book bridges the gulf. It covers the basics well that serve as reminder for those who have experience yet is understandable and educational for those just starting out.
As the sections get more advanced, the illustrations and photos are plentiful and show good detail. These are extremely helpful in understanding the processes described.
In short this book is a keeper. Good reference material.

Book Description
This book provides the Greek text of the Oratio catechetica by Gregory of Nyssa. It is a critical edition based on the examination of all 59 known manuscripts. Their relationship is extensively analyzed in the preface. The latest edition of the Oratio catechetica was prepared by J.H. Srawley in 1903. Many more manuscripts have since been discovered including several ancient ones. Thus, Srawley's text has been improved. Being part of the well-known series Gregorii Nysseni Opera the edition sets a further standard for editing the highly complex text transmission of the Church Fathers. The Oratio catechetica is a summary of Christian doctrine written at the end of the 4th century. The penetrating mind of its author, Gregory of Nyssa, elaborates a coherent theological system and was of great influence.

Book Description
For this sumptuously illustrated catalog, Kalman A. Burnim—picture editor and compiler of the iconographies published in the sixteen-volume Biographical Dictionary—has selected more than 350 portraits from various editions of the John Bell publication Bell’s Shakespeare (including John Barker’s continuation of 1799–1800) and from Bell’s British Theatre (including George Cawthorn’s 1797 edition). Philip H. Highfill Jr. has furnished the introductory essay for the catalog.
These are portraits of players in costume for their roles. Most are by James Roberts and Samuel De Wilde, who were among the leading painters of actors and actresses between 1770 and 1820. Richard Cosway, William Hamilton, Gilbert Stuart, and other painters also have work represented in the catalog. The beautifully detailed engraved plates are by James Thornthwaite, William Leney, Philippe Audinet, and others.

More Info.......2006-11-27
Overall this book was an okay read. I would have preferred to read more about Josh Gibson and his personal/family life. This book provided more information on box scores and Negro League history than on Josh Gibson. There was information on him that I had never read about or even heard about for that matter which was Great! Not to say the information about box scores and Negro League history are not important. I think I could have gotten that information from the author's other book he wrote about the history of the Negro Leagues. I would have liked to read more about Josh Gibson personally such as what happened to his twin daughter, what happened to the other women in his life, did he have any more children or is any of his memorabilia in the hall of fame are just a few questions that I would have liked to read about.
A sports bio like no other.............2004-02-05
Josh Gibson was known as "the black Babe Ruth." In his day, he towered over the other batting talent in the negro leagues like a colossus. Legend has it that he hit more than 800 homeruns including the longest one out of Yankee stadium ever recorded. Because of the color barrier, he never made it to "the bigs" and died just three months before Jackie Robinson broke through. Sadly, he remains a footnote in sports history known mostly to true baseball afficianados. However, thanks to this book by Mark Ribowsky, he will never be forgotten and will always be accessible to those interested enough to read it. Like the jazz musician Charlie Parker, he was a womanizing drug abuser who died in his mid-thirties. Both men died long before their immense talent ever had the chance to fade away. They also represented two of America's greatest inventions --- baseball and jazz with incredible style and poise. Interesting details here about Josh's time in the South American leagues fill in gaps in his career record. Poignant insight is also presented about the loss of his first wife which set the stage for his depression, self-abuse and eventual downfall. No less an authority than baseball's greatest hitter Ted Williams used his 1966 Baseball Hall of Fame induction speech to praise both Gibson and his pitching counterpart Satchel Paige lobbying for them to be inducted into the hall which they both eventually were. Details, annecdotes and great insights into a great player abound in this book. The writing here by Ribowsky is definitely worthy of his subject.
Josh, the question still remains.......2002-08-23
I read in anticipation to learn why a strong and powerful man such as Josh Gibson would die at the young age of 36. Yes, there were references to his drinking and drug use. There was mention about him possibly having a brain tumor. That's where the book missed the point. If it was a brain tumor, the author simply skated the issue by saying that the record keeping in the 40's left something to be desired. Certainly there were people to interview who were affiliated with the hospital where he stayed and was diagnosed. I think a stronger case for or against a brain tumor should have been made by the author instead of glossing over the matter. Way too much detail of the balls and strikes of games was given. Who cares about that stuff? I wanted to know about Josh the man and got some of that, but not nearly enough. Page after page was filled with box score details that were meaningless for the most part. If he truly had "many women", who were these people and did any other than Hattie and Grace play a major role in his life? Lots of questions and few answers from the author. Sorry!
A Great history of a great black baseball legend.......2000-08-20
It's easy to see why this writer also wrote a book about Satchel Paige. Their careers are so intertwined, he already had the research. And, in fact, you could almost call this a history of the Negro Baseball League.
The negatives to the book are that it early reads somewhat like a rehash of newspaper articles. The author was forced into this because the two primary sources were the weekly black newspapers and "embellished" word of mouth. The set-up is a little long on the history of the two Pittsburgh teams that Josh played for but since this rivalry was so intertwined with Josh's history, it was almost necessary.
The positives are that this is a classic "tragic hero". Humble beginnings and tragedy, develops into a tremendous player, personal flaws erode his skills, and then he has a young, controversial death. When you overlay that with the rumors and embellishment of his accomplishments, it's easy to see how the legend has grown. The author did a good job of balancing legend with documentable evidence helping the reader draw a conclusion on the stories that may be overstated exaggerations.
This is a great story and a very good read I enjoyed. Obviously, Josh Gibson and Satch Paige paved the way for Jackie Robinson and have their place in baseball history. I STRONGLY encourage you to watch "The Soul of the Game" on HBO which takes the history of Paige, Gibson and Robinson and overlays the facts into a reconstruction. It was one of the best movies I have ever watched and never fails to draw you emotionally into the story. This book and it's careful research, allowed me to realize virtually every scene in the movie was drawn from some fact and not an overstatement.
Powerful!!!.......1998-12-04
Mark Ribowsky has researched his material and subject very well. A very powerful but sad message comes from this book. Josh Gibson had tremendous and unlimited power and potential. As a victim of a racist America of that time, we will never truly know just how great he could have been. A sad epitaph exists for all Negro League Stars...Statistics are terribly lacking and wrought with inconsistencies. More often than not we are left to the colorful imaginations of those that were witness to this era. No question, they were all highly talented. No question, they were robbed and we were robbed. Josh Gibson is about as poignent a subject as anyone. Such a shame! Thank you, Mark. Thank you for at least allowing us to have a glimpse at what it was like for Josh and many others of a bygone era. It was not an easy time for them. Josh was the one that was hardest hit by the climate. The truth is known, it is ugly, but it is known.

Is It About Josh Or Satchel?.......2006-08-17
The 2004 paperback edition leads off with author Mark Ribowsky taking Barry Bonds to task for comments the controversial slugger made concerning the slugging prowess of Josh Gibson.
He chides the future hall of famer for falling prey to the myth surrounding the total number of official homers Gibson smacked in regular-season Negro League games. Barry bashing at its finest!
Ribowsky then pens a very uneven biography that often relies on too much game commentary and material from his outstanding biography of Satchel Paige. While the pair certainly were superstars in baseball, Ribowsky losses focus too often on the title of his book.
There are sections where Ribowsky yanks the reader from Gibson, goes into long commentary about Paige and then attempts to draw the chapter back to Gibson. It simply doesn't work.
As a dual biography, the book deserves at least one more star. Ribowsky simply needed to be more honest with himself and the reader about the direction he took with his research and writing.
