Read this book is a like a journey in the past (the firties) in the sailor's world and in the passion.

The atmosphere is splendid, the characters are interesting. The story is superb.

Sombre evocation of a long-vanished way of life........2002-05-09

This title is an English invention, unhappily signalling a facetiousness absent from a sombre Simenon story about double murder, decdence, broken lives and betrayal. A literal translation from the French is 'The Carter Of The 'Providence'', but perhaps that was seen as too leading, even if it was Simenon's choice; another alternative, 'The Crime At Lock 14' is the most satisfying, centring on the important aspect of the novel: place. 'Milord' is set in that strange, marginal, now obsolete inter-war world of canal barges, perhaps most familiar from contemporary films of the period, such as 'Boudu Saved From Drowning' or 'L'Atalante'. Indeed, the star of those films, Michel Simon, would have been an obvious choice to play the main non-Migret character in any film of this book, the carter Jean, a taciturn giant whose face and tattooed body are buried in a mass of hirsute overgrowth, a man who sleeps in dumb animal warmth with his horses in the barge stable, and into whose eyes Maigret can't decide whether to read imbecility or the keenest intelligence.

A beautiful, rich, well-dressed woman is found strangled between two sleeping carters in the tavern stable at Dizy, Lock 14. She is the wife of an elderly English aristocrat, disgraced Colonel Lampson, who is sailing along the canal tribuatry of the Marne on his luxury yacht The Southern Cross with his sleazy but charming companion Willy Marco, and his fat Chilean mistress. Despite his bearing and stiff-upper-lip, the Colonel conducts regular drunken orgies on board his yacht, and tolerated his wife's affair with Marco. The other principal boat in the story is the huge barge The Providence, run by a small, timid skipper, his garrulous, kindly wife and the carter Jean.

Simenon characterises barge-life as a kind of shadow-world adjacent to, but unknown to, normal life around it, with its own codes, customs and language. Although these are floating homes, not tied to any one place and potentially unstable, their slow, regular movements up and down the river, and the rules they must abide by are as rigid, claustrophobic and monotonous as any settler's. But Simenon brilliantly captures the sense of a shifting communal life, competitive (the dense traffic on a small stretch of water means much jostling for pole position), but full of cameraderie and good humour, helping out friends in trouble, carrying messages from relatives, tipping canal-side officials.

For a rooted outsider like Maigret, this world seems enchanted, his inability to crack the case matched by a terrible sense of suspension hanging over the twilit realm - it is only by breaking out of it, asserting his mobility by bicycle, that he can regain his detective prowess. Before that, he learns many fascinating facts about the mechanics of barge life, as well as its drabness and colour, its hierarchies of boats and petty bendings of the law, the land men, women and buildings who service it (lock-keepers, tavern- and shop-owners); a group world of work and routine in which transgressive individual desire can have the direst consequences.

The way Simenon himself, like a narrative elastic band, suspends the tension, allowing us to soak in the character and atmosphere, before accelerating the suspense and action, is so gripping, this must count as an exceptional early Maigret.

One of the very best Maigrets, in my opinion, and I've read most of them. This one is particularly memorable for its brilliantly evocative atmosphere.

Authoritative Book On BPD.......2007-08-24

This is an excellent book on BPD written by a genuine expert on the subject - not some self-appointed guru.

The book begins by defining what BPD is and how it is diagnosed. A table of diagnostic criteria is provided. The book then ventures into the history and causes of BPD. It then gets a little "academic" with chapters on the mechanism of the disease. This part will prove very intersting to curious readers who want all the details. For the easy readers, it may seem a bit wordy and technical. The best thing about this book is that it only gives the readers the facts.

The final chapters deal with the key elements of treatment, medications and therapy. The book ends on a positive note with plenty of advice on how to cope if a loved one suffers from BPD. Not too much specifics on coping with BPD, but definitely good recommendations for positive paths and directions to take.

A Parent's Perspective.......2007-08-13

This book was very informative regarding how to understand Borderline Personality Disorder and those who suffer from it. It provided insight into how to approach those with this disorder and how to understand "where they're coming from". It gave many real-life scenarios to which I could relate. These were helpful in my day-to-day walk with a family member who has this disorder. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know how to respond to a Borderline Personality Disorder person, and why they think the way they do.

I was impressed that I was able to purchase a used copy that was as good as new. The information is very helpful and easy for a layman like me to understand. The chapters cover different topics and do not have to be read in order. You may pick the topics you are interested in.

This book was really able to break it down with out boaring me to death. it also pointed out a lot of things that i really didnt realize i did but it help because now i dont feel so out there. I dont know i highly recommend this book to anyone.

Borderline PD Demystified.......2007-01-16

This is an up to date, easy to read explanation of the etiology and treatment of the borderline personality disorder. I would highly recommend it both to lay readers and professionals.

I don't have a cooking club and I've never made all of the recipes in a chapter for a dinner party, but I've picked-and-chosen recipes and haven't come up with a bad dish yet. Their mac & cheese is the one I return to again and again. The recipes are easy to follow, off the beaten path, and sooo yummy.

Hasn't Let Me Down Yet!.......2005-09-20

I have many excellent cookbooks, and yet when I want to make a new dish and there's no room for a disappointment, this is the one I always pull down. I've made many of the dishes in the book and each one has always been flavorful, broadened my palate and yet never been too difficult or complex for me to master.

As others have said, the wit and stories behind the recipes makes me read through it even when I'm not looking to cook. It also inspired me to start my own cooking club with a groupd of my friends. We've had some wonderful times together, though I must admit, out own cooking prowess has never reached the heights of these ladies. Very highly recommended!

The idea of a cooking club with a group of friends is terrific. Too many times we grow apart from those close to us as marriage, kids, and careers occur. I first saw this book about six months ago. I have a collection of cookbooks but am particular of what I add to it. Before I bought it for myself, I decided to give it as a gift. One of my closest friends from high school recently became a stay at home mom. She was trying to broaden her culinary skills in the kitchen and she doesn't consider herself much of a cook. She loves the cookbook and can't thank me enough. I went out and purchased it so we could share the club even though the miles separate us.

The layout of the book starts with a recap of how the club came into existence. The troubles they face living in NY, tiny kitchens and lugging groceries, was interesting to someone like myself who never is without her car. I particularly enjoyed the emails between the women showing how they came up with the monthly theme. It really shows the personalities of the members. The pictures show off the food deliciously.

We can only hope that they will continue to include the rest of us in their club! I highly recommend you try to gather a group of 6-8 and try this yourself. My favorite recipe is the bread salad. I get lots of compliments every time I make it.

As an amateur chef with roots in the midwest, I've long relied on little more than good ol' salt and pepper when it comes time to cook for the crew (except for a shake of Italian seasoning on spaghetti night!). But this fantastic book turned me on to a virtual phantasmagoria of new culinary delights! Even my husband, who usually balks at long john silver, is a fan of the italian fish in crazy water. One added bonus for us gals: we get to see what kind of footwear these sophisticated manhattanites are trotting around in these days. Ouch! I think I'll keep my Stride Rites! But I'm a sucker for the Cellophane Noodle Salad.

Witty, charming, well designed, user friendly, and most of all- the recipes are wonderful!

As a seasoned NYC home chef, the hardest thing to do is to come up with a recipe that involves little space, little equipment and little time. These six girls not only engage you with their wonderfully witty writing, but have simplified the difficult task of apartment-sized cooking so that anyone can do it and have excellent results.

Plus the wonderful photos of the food and of the girls cooking, shopping and dining really does make you feel invited. And the graphic design gets great marks for being as chic as they are!

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of little cooking clubs don't start up because of it! [Word has it that they might be doing another book? Cross your fingers on that bit of gossip!]

PS: this would make a great housewarming or hostess gift!

A noteworthy and valid call to action.......2007-08-20

Opening with quite a heart-wrenching tale that truly draws in the reader, and then never losing steam, Regan has written a highly intriguing argument in favor of animal rights. Running the gamut from factory farming to animal experimentation, and including the use of animals for entertainment purposes, Regan covers every angle and both sides to each argument. Of course, his degree in philosophy doesn't hurt when providing the reader with convincing evidence and sound logic. However, it must be noted that this book is highly accessible, even with the philosophical arguments posed herein.

Interwoven within the arguments both for and against animal rights are firsthand accounts of not only visits to factory farms and the like, but also Regan's own personal "muddling" journey from lackadaisical animal lover to animal rights activist. One might even see much of their own personal journey reflected in these pages. Furthermore, Regan is never condescending of those who have yet to make the jump to activism, for he himself took some time to blossom into the activist he is today.

The only reason I give this book four stars instead of five is because much of the material is indeed recycled. For the seasoned animal rights activist, there is not much new to be found within these pages. However, if you are on the fence about animal rights, and perhaps are on your own "muddling" journey from animal lover to activist, this book is inclined to push you towards the latter, and for good reason. This book is very highly recommended for anyone curious about animal rights. The book ends on a positive note, calling for more people to act out so that animal rights can become a reality and not just an intriguing notion. This book certainly needs to be placed in the hands of friends and family everywhere.

This introductory book summarized Mr. Regan's idea of animal rights in a very accessible way. The stories of his own "muddler's" journey were fun to read.

Taking the place of Singer's 'Animal Liberation'.......2005-07-07

I honestly can not think of a book that I have enjoyed more than this one in my lifetime. I am already an ARA, but I think this book is written in a way that it would be a perfect choice for someone asking the question, "What exactly is animal rights, and what do animal rights activists want us to change?'
Clearly and non-condescendingly written and thought provoking, this book might just change your world-view. Buy this book today.

Educating, but the logic needs work.......2004-09-11

This book doesn't provide an inescapable chain of logic leading to Regan's conclusion. Few people will be convinced of his position out of pure reason unless they were headed that direction already. However, the book is good for educating the general public about what goes on in the animal use businesses. Most people are overly optimistic about the usual procedures, and if they were more aware they might reduce their animal consumption or boycott the worst companies.

A challenge to Tom Regan.......2004-08-27

One of the best ways to slow down the spread of a political message, especially if new members are drawn from the nation's youth, is to make people buy a book in order to hear that message.

Eric Marcus, author of VEGAN THE NEW ETHICS OF EATING sells his book through regular channels, but he also has it available for free download in a pdf file.

I challenge the author to do the same once he has made back the costs of his book

Excellent overview of Southwestern Art.......1999-04-27

Ya'at'eeh! As the editor/author of The Native American Indian Artist Directory, I found the Pages' book to be a perfect companion book. I would suggest reading the Field Guide first to learn about the arts and crafts that interest you, then read The Native American Indian Artist Directory to find the artists that produce the items you're interested in collecting for yourself. Journalist, historian, anthropologist, art critic, and creative writer, Anita Brenner was one of Mexico's most discerning interpreters. Born to a Jewish immigrant family in Mexico a few years before the Revolution of 1910, she matured into an independent liberal who defended Mexico, workers, and all those who were treated unfairly, whatever their origin or nationality.

In this book, her daughter, Susannah Glusker, traces Brenner's intellectual growth and achievements from the 1920s through the 1940s. Drawing on Brenner's unpublished journals and autobiographical novel, as well as on her published writing, Glusker describes the origin and impact of Brenner's three major books, Idols Behind Altars, Your Mexican Holiday, and The Wind That Swept Mexico.

Along the way, Glusker traces Brenner's support of many liberal causes, including her championship of Mexico as a haven for Jewish immigrants in the early 1920s. This intellectual biography brings to light a complex, fascinating woman who bridged many worlds—the United States and Mexico, art and politics, professional work and family life.

Anita's Mexico.......2000-03-06

A fascinating book for those interested in Mexican-American relationships. Anita's active role in the rich cultural life of Mexico in the twenties, and her friendship with such figures as Diego Rivera, Frida Khalo and Tina Modotti, provide a valuable insight into an also fascinating country. Her bright intelligence proved to be well ahead of times. A true and sincere fighter against stereotypes of Mexico in American minds, she was one of the very few to challenge them, contributing with her work to a better understanding among both countries. Such conscious research by Ms. Glusker deserves much praise. One wishes that she had included a much more deep insight into Anita's persona and emotions, as well as her work in the family's farm in her late years. Anita's wide variety of interests seemed to have no limits.But maybe that is material for another book.
