Book Description
Palm Beach's premier man-about-crime returns, in a delightfully raucous romp among South Florida's fabulous and felonious.
When Sabrina Wright, bestselling author of sumptuous tales of loves lost and found, asks for Archy McNally's help in finding her missing husband, Archy quickly discovers it's not a simple domestic case. Sabrina's husband did not disappear: rather, her daughter, Gillian, ran off, and Sabrina sent the man, not her father, to find her-and he seems to have gotten lost, too.
Gillian Wright fled to Palm Beach when she learned the true story of her birth: Sabrina had the baby out of wedlock, put her up for adoption, then adopted her. Sabrina has never revealed the name of Gillian's father, having received a large sum of money to keep the whole thing quiet. But when local gossips get wind of the story, three different Palm Beach gents come to Archy to confess their paternity and beg him to protect them from any scandal. Sabrina had committed indiscretions with all three-and collected from all three. When she turns up dead, however, Archy must take a chance-and hope to discover which of these men would kill to conceal his secret.

Tenderizing Stew Paints Meaty Character Portrait, "Beauty Lies Here, Somewhere. Slurp.".......2007-02-02
In McNally's CHANCE Lardo definitely had Archy down and strutting with the same wit and charm which Sanders conjured in the pilot to this series, McNally's SECRET. I was instantly mesmerized by Lardo's opening detailing of The Character of a famous female romance novelist, Sabrina Wright; her evolving situation held my interest with no lulls allowed.
I was still noticing a slight edge of anger to Lardo's Archy (in this 3rd novel from Lardo, 10th in the series) which I hadn't felt with Sanders' version of the man, but the edgy persona continued to work well. I also noticed that some of the characters which Lardo seemed to warm least to, Connie and The Pater, were downplayed or absent through most of this plot.
With Prescott McNally on a cruise with his wife, Archy was set up to make his own decisions about to take or not to take on a client, and in all cases he resisted, through his own terms and qualms. In prior novels, especially those authored by Sanders, Archy's father usually assigned clients to his son (often after dinner, in the "Dickens" den). In this sense, I noticed again the control factor mentioned in my review of DILEMMA which had Archy more at the helm of his life, instead of flowing with it in a sort of Huckleberry Finn style, which Sanders' Archy seemed to do.
This being the third offering from Lardo, I've become adapted to the intenser masculinity in Lardo's Archy, so I was automatically able to flow easily with the mood in CHANCE. Interest in the plot, which successfully attempted a few unique twists and tangs from the norm in detective novels, was maintained steadily at a pleasantly satisfying level. As Sanders had done, Lardo toyed with female types and Archy's automatic responses to them, along with his failed efforts to resist their intrigues and remain faithful to Connie, an effort which was beginning to chafe ominously in CHANCE (if not before).
I was impressed that Archy didn't fall into Sabrina's feminine "spells." In fact, I found it surprisingly refreshing that he maintained a sort of sexual distance this novel. His libido was noticeably dormant during the first half of the story (but not in the last half, in which he didn't have the last laugh). I enjoyed Archy's warm exchanges with Binky, Al, Jamie, Ursi, and the Pettibones, along with the subplot tangles among these characters and the ones new to CHANCE.
However, the subtle, intriguing discontent I sensed in Archy here made me wonder if Lardo may have had a surge of feeling the drain of taking over another author's program, instead of flying on one of his own creations. I empathize with Lardo, as I also admire the skill and dedication with which he's handled this series so far. Selfishly, I'm thankful that I've been able to easily enjoy each novel in this series, and the transition to Lardo's "show" was not only easy, but gave fascinating opportunities to observe this type of take-over situation between two authors holding a paradox of distinctly different, yet somewhat similar personalities and writing styles.
I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping to see evidence soon that Vincent Lardo's almost finished with a new Archy McNally novel, which would be # 14 (Lardo's # 7). At least I have 3 more to go prior to any onset of panic prefacing a second grieving for Archy's demise. Luckily, this series is rich enough to be reread, with possibly more satisfaction than the first time around.

The best yet inspite of its faults........2004-01-20
This one is probably the best read in the entire McNally series to date. The ending is a bit weak in one or two places, Archie is a little too taken by Bianca Courtney, and I doubt we will hear much more about Henry Peavy, but the book is still a great read. Read, enjoy and savor.
Awful addition to a once great series.......2002-09-29
Like many out there, I fell in love with the McNally books, due to the fun mystery plots and the characters within. However it has gotten "tired." This is part to Lawrence Sanders's death as well as Vicent Lardo's repeated sequels. I find in this latest book, not much enjoyable. It is so hard to put this into words, but with the mystery was lackluster and the characters so two dementional I had to actually "plod" through this book. Thankfully many authors, upon their death, have their characters die with them and I think that is as it should be. I trust like other series characters written in Sanders's life time (Edward X. Delany to name one) that Lardo decide to allow Mr. McNally to go, instead of dying a slow painful death on the stage of his books.
McNally is still fun.......2002-06-03
I, for one, am very thankful that Mr. Lardo has continued the McNally series. I love the characters and while this was not my favorite McNally book it was still McNally and still a fun read. With a few more twists than normal this book requires a little more attention than others in the series. A fun summertime book.
Not a True Archy McNally Book.......2002-01-09
I have very mixed feelings about this book. Although it was an enjoyable read, I think it very unfair to call this an Archy McNally book. So many of our favorite traps that create the mood were missing-- Archy rarely wrote in his diary; he never went for an ocean swim; he did not wear berets or tassled pink loafers; he did not settle down in the evening in a kimono for a marc and a recording of Ella Fitzgerald; he did not sing while he drove; the vivid descriptions of food and clothing were missing; the usual flirting between Archy and Mrs. Trelawny became snide insults; and I could go on and on. In the past women have always flocked to Archy, but here his pursuit of Bianca seemed lecherous. He was nasty to Binky, who in the past Archy has affectionately tolerated. Also I found it annoying the way Mr. Lardo felt it necessary to casually mention things from other books- Dr. Gussie Pearlberg, Hobo-- that had no place here, but show that Mr. Lardo has read the other books. The story was interesting, but the end was a cop out. I had to re-read the last 20 pages twice because it didn't make sense. This book is in no way an Archy McNally novel. I suggest Mr. Lardo re-read all the Lawrence Sanders' Archy novels in one sitting and then try again.

Good easy read.......2006-04-20
This is really several stories in one--it's a snapshot of a kingdom and the people that are trying to save it--and the people that are trying to take it over. It's a good old-fashioned fantasy--an adventure told from several viewpoints. The Hag is a menace to all men of course, a magical creature that kidnaps and enslaves men. There is a wizard trying to help those on their quest to rescue the king. There is a "regent" trying to run the kingdom until the king can be rescued. All it all, it's a good tale with pirates, magic, and good characterization.
I gave it 3 stars only because I am not a fan of multiple POV. I like to engage with one or maybe two sets of characters and invest in them emotionally. That said, each tale weaves around the others very skillfully. The characters interact well and the viewpoints change cleanly. There is adventure, danger, and action throughout, although the ending, told through a series of letters probably wouldn't fly in today's "show don't tell" world, it does wrap it all up.
Another great book from the Birthright Series.......1999-10-13
One of the best of the Birthright series i suggest reading all of the Birthright books myself.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-08-02
I haven't finished this book yet but it is basic enough to incorporate into your life to help you get through your depression and anxiety.
I have been depressed since the age of 19 and I'm now 36 so I am excited to see how much it can help me in the long run.
Helps w/ the issues (and much more).......2007-06-28
It's been about 3-4 years since I read this book. I was in a dark period after a family tragedy. I'm a very well adjusted and happy adult and this book is a big part of it.
Revolutionary? No. It's just a simple way to re-engineer self-image. What Dr. Joe advocates is 1. disrupt the negative self-talk (all depression patients know about the neg. self talk). 2. replace the negative "ST" with positive "ST." 3. practice this habit over and over until it becomes routine (perhaps the most challenging part). 4. After doing this exercise for about 6-12 months, suddenly you discover that this activity becomes habit, and you then pleasantly discover that your self image is constantly positive and you feel much-much better.
Then, you start to apply this technique to other parts of your life, and, if you're like me, you realize that all that stuff the dali lama preaches is real: you really do have control over your life!
This book requires steady work-hard work which, if practiced, becomes easy with time. Hang in there folks! Stick to the plan and you will find your way out of the dark hole!
Who else do I recommend? Check out Tal Ben-Shahar's books. He's another positive psychologist. Good stuff.
LOGICAL and Basic! Very helpful!.......2007-05-04
This book is for anyone tired of feeling like a victim of their own thoughts. After reading this book I was able to immediately incorporate his techniques successfully. For example, I had a class that always makes gives me anxiety so when I was in class and feeling awful, I looked at the clock and said to myself, "2 more hours. I can handle anything for 2 hours." After that I was fine! It's not just about telling yourself positive things that may be untrue or simply unhelpful, it's about separating fact from fiction. It was true I hated the class, but it was also true that I could handle it for 2 hours. Once you separate fact from fiction you begin to see how your self doubt doesn't need to have the upper hand. You can choose to stop feeling insecure and start LIVING. Negative thoughts stop us from action and freedom from these thought allows us to LIVE. I also recommend the book Dancing with Fear by Foxman, very good and very helpful, but if you want something more pragmatic - buy Luciani's book.
Self Coaching.......2007-03-13
To be honest this wasn't a book that I could get into. I returned it after scanning it.
even better book .......2007-03-12
this book is great. it really puts things into prespective. if give a lot of definitions an backgroud information. It offers a lot of clarity and helps one tackle the life challenging problems of anxiety and depression. i strongly recommend this book

This books gets lots of use!.......2006-06-19
I have used this book regularly since I bought it three months ago. Every recipe I've tried has been a success. There are sections for beef, poultry, lamb, vegetables, and even pizza. Some recipes require marinading meat over night others for 30 minutes or less. A good cookbook for busy families.

As our series expands and focuses on different kinds of pets, the emphasis remains on making the pet a companion.
In addition, owners of more unusual pets will particularly appreciate the expert advice in these books because professional care for their animals may be difficult to come by. As always, the instruction is from experts—people who know their pet intimately, but also remember what it was like to have one for the first time. Happy, Healthy Pet guides are rich with professional quality color photos and are designed to be enjoyable and easy to learn from.

Covers a wide variety of subjects.......2006-03-19
Alot of information from choosing the right parrot, taking care of it, training, and health. Very helpful.
Solid but Generic.......2000-01-19
There is very little to take issue with in this book-- but if you didn't know the title you might just as well think you were reading a book on Amazons, Greys, or any number of other parrots. The information is extremely generic with the exception of a few passages here and there. I really don't think this is the author's fault- and the info is useful- but if you want a really good feeling for what it's like to own a QUAKER- you should also buy Mattie Sue Athan's outstanding book. That said, the one thing I do object to here is this author's claim that any household with cats and Quakers should have the cats declawed. That may be fair to the birds but is an incredible injustice to the felines. If you can't keep them separate, you might be better off not having one or the other. Overall, a solid book but if I didn't already have a Quaker this book would not have shown me how amazing these birds are! They are incredible.
Excellent for the novice bird owner.......1999-03-06
When I first bought my Quaker, I didn't know the first thing about parrots. Fortunately for both of us he was so young he couldn't come home yet. I bought this book and read every page religiously. She gave me so much insight into what my bird would behave like, look like, eat, want, you name it. Her writing was easy to read and understand. She herself owns Quakers, so she is accustomed to their behavior, behavior problems, quirks, eating habits, likes, dislikes, etc. By the time I was done reading the book, I felt like the expert; from cage purchase to food selection to an attention schedule. My bird and I are a happy family now, and I still refer to my book when I need help. I highly recommend it to any Quaker Parrot owner.
Excellent Resource for New or Prospective Quaker Owner.......1998-03-31
An experienced parrot owner and breeder myself, I found little to disagree with in this book. Ms. Higdon's writing is clear, informative, and easy to understand. She obviously knows her subject, and she writes well. Her sly but gentle sense of humor is evident and enjoyable. The information presented is accurate, up-to-date, and covers most of the things a new Quaker owner will need to know. She portrays the personality and characteristics of the Quaker quite well and makes several excellent points, such as the fact that talking ability should be a secondary rather than primary concern when choosing a parrot for a pet, that are seldom made in other books. The focus of this book is quite different from Theresa Jordan's handbook - it contains no information pertaining to breeding and may not be of interest to the breeder or experienced Quaker owner. If, however, you have newly acquired a Quaker or are considering getting one, I would highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
also the book is very bad. Designs stolen!!!.......2006-09-27
I don't know about the kit, I got it used without the kit through amazon, but I didn't like the book. The designs are too small and badly done (that is not art), there is no sense of space and decoration. The explaining method is good, but it's mainly took from an Indian book titled 'Art of Mehandi', as some of the artwork. I bet the author is not able to do a decent henna design of his own...
Good with art, bad if you bought the kit........1999-10-18
This henna book had some of the best mehndi designs for hands I have seen. Most books give you beautiful pictures but don't take the time to explain each design. This book does. The hand art is a must for people starting out.
The only bad thing about this book and the kit it comes with is it has the smallest amount of henna I have seen in any kit. 5 grams isn't much at all. Plus, the solution to mix with the henna is a dry crystalized form that doesn't appear to have all natural ingredients. I think this is bad since Mehndi is a purely natural body art. The mehndi oil included in the kit is the oddest smelling of any kit I have bought too.
If you want illustrations buy the book but if you want henna buy the Return to Tribal Body Adornment Kit.
excellent layout and indepth information and designs.......1999-05-08
I found this book to be one of very few books that had such detailed history and background information on the ancient art. The book layout was excellent and well planned which really helps a beginner like myself to adjust withou getting confused. The sections are easy to understand and follow and is great for people who are new to this art. The mixture of designs is good you get a good balance of traditional mixed with modern the kit was tricky but if you follow the instructions works!! But buy this book for it's rich knowledge and by the way the cover is wow!!! and probably the only one with an asian model on it. My congrats to the wonderful author of this great piece of work and are there any other titles by her???
Good Book, Horrible Kit!!.......1998-12-29
The book I found was well informative and was good for practicing, but the kit was a mess. The instructions were very ambiguous and the paste came out frothy and light. Not only was the paste horrible, but the cone aplicator tore because the plastic was too thin and the paste was all clogy. But other than that, the book was great, but i wouldn't waste my money
THE BOOK IS GOOD-------THE KIT IS DANGEROUS!.......1998-09-24
I am a professional mehndi artist and I have a problem with the kit alone because it contains some ingredients that are not safe. The traditional oils for mehndi are Eucalyptus or Clove oil. The kit contains Terpinol (a very close relative of turpentine) to mix with the henna. It's not safe at all. Other than that, I think the book was nice and informative.

Book Description
Rembrandt's work is enormous, and includes 287 known engravings, and his drawings number thousands. In this book are assembled reproductions of the best examples in the very well-stocked Russian colections. As in his paintings, the chiaroscuro effects, the transfigurations of the real, even in his less serious works, speak of his non-conformism and point to a new language which is outside art.
His innate psychological understanding and his exceptional technical virtuosity are explained in the introduction, which is followed by a catalog of the reproductions. A high standard has been achieved in the reproduction which will enhance the reader's appreciation.
