Book Description
Life may imitate art...but death follows it.
While studying art history at New York University, brilliant and beautiful Finn Ryan makes a startling discovery: a Michelangelo drawing of a dissected corpse-supposedly from the artist's near-mythical notebook. But that very night, someone breaks into her apartment-murdering her boyfriend and stealing the sketches she made of the drawing. Fleeing for her life, Finn heads to the address her mother had given her for emergencies, where she finds the enigmatic antiquarian book dealer, Michael Valentine. Together, they embark on a desperate race through the city-and through the pages of history itself-to expose an electrifying secret from the final days of World War II-a secret that lies in the dark labyrinthine heart of the Vatican.

Terrible!.......2007-09-19
It's not very often that I actually can't get through a book, but this one I just had to put down. I can't speak much to the quality of the whole story since I didn't finish, but the the writing style is so bad, I couldn't take anymore. If you read the first few chapters, you will see what I mean. He starts of the book by describing the novel's heroine in physical detail, because (of course) she just happens to be a nude model for art classes in her spare time. Which is completely unrelated to the rest of the story. It comes off like a dirty, but also totally cheesy, porn romance novel. I mean, he seriously spends several sentences talking about the color of her nipples, and even compares them to seashells. The whole book goes on like this. I read about 100 pages and then had to stop.
Absolutely dreadful.......2007-07-26
This book had a lot of potential, from the interesting cover, to the premise on the back. Unfortunately, it was one of the worst books I have ever read. It was disjointed, confusing, underdeveloped (plot and characters) and boring. It lacked a strong plot and had little resolution at the end. The author had more fun describing the lead female basically as a sexual object than a mature adult. The sexual overtones were unnecessary and distracting. His attempts to keep the reader in the dark were so confusing that I never knew what was going on, which "plot" to focus on or which decade to be in. All in all, a terrible "thriller."
Author is too preoccupied with sex.......2007-07-02
Instead of reading a thrilling and suspenseful story, I instead had to read numerous, graphic references to the main character's body. I lost count of how many times the author described her breasts. It was silly, distracting, and a waste of time.
I'm not usually so harsh when reviewing a book, but really, there was no point to this book. The plot dragged, it was simply not suspenseful, and the author came off sounding like an over sexed teenaged boy.
Linnie.......2007-01-04
Interesting but at times the story drifted and required concentration.
Not the best religious thriller I have read but cerrtainly not the worst.
Had potential - but not a winner.......2006-10-13
Too many characters, a real poor imitation of Dan Brown.

Book Description
Life isn't easy for Julius Kyle, a jaded crime hack with the Post. When he wakes up on a sand barge with his head full of grit he knows things have to change. He doesn't guess how fast they'll change until his best friend Mick jumps to his death off a 50-foot bridge outside the Post's window. Worst of all, Julius is a cat. That means keeping himself scrupulously clean, defending his territory and battling an addiction to milk. When the lovely Moira begs Julius for help, Julius is drawn brutally into a life he has only lived in his novels--the life of his hero sleuth Tiger Straight. The cats live in a city called Bast, a sprawling world of alleyways and claw-shaped towers. On these mean streets Julius has to contend with political intrigue, territorial disputes and dog-burglars.

Gritty thriller set in a world of felines and canines.......2003-02-26
I picked this book up after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. It is a fascinating work in that it is written from the unusual perspective of anthropomorphized cats and dogs (ie, they have human feelings and drives). It is definitely not a book aimed at children, like many of those based on animal characters. Some parts are even shockingly harsh, but the author captures the behaviors and style of actual cats and dogs very well.
I felt like there could have been a little more background, since the setting is left deliberately vague. We never get an idea of scale, or how these cats and dogs ended up in acting like humans, living in cities, having a religion, and so forth.
A unique work, and well worth a look for that alone.
The Cat's Pajamas.......2002-12-18
A must buy. I'm getting two copies for friends as Christmas gifts. An all-cat thriller based in a city filled with felines. This is an exciting and intriguing novel - I couldn't stop reading til I got to the end. An excellent novel, the best I've ever read. Good cover too!
Life isn't easy for a small cat with a big mouth.......2002-12-10
"Milk Treading" is the only completely cat-centered political thriller/detective story I've ever read. The characters are all cats, dogs, and assorted rodents, and British author Nick Smith does an amazing job of capturing real cat behavior. I'd give it an A for staying in character throughout, a B for plot (as in B movies), and a B/B+ for social commentary.
Parts are gritty -- this isn't your mother's fuzzy kitty story. These cats hunt, scheme, love, and fight for their survival in a world of political intrigue and fierce territorial disputes. And it's a fun -- and funny -- novel, with a quirky, dry wit. I've bought copies for grown-up gifts and told my more adventurous friends to check it out. "Animal Farm" meets "Trainspotting," or maybe "Die Hard" meets "The Aristocats."
Corrupt politicians, illicit romance, hack journalists, venal church officials, deadly gang rumbles, slums, class conflict, catnip parties, pro wrestler-turned-celebrity, murder, mayhem, and milk treading -- this has it all!
Book Description
A leading Harvard Medical School doctor introduces his innovative exercise plan that helps you lose weight through your day-to-day activities
Media coverage of health and fitness is at an all-time high. Everyone wants to be fit and healthy but not everyone has the time, energy, or motivation to hit the gym or do laps around the track. "Light" exercise has been recommended by doctors for years, but no one knew how much was enough to make a difference. The No Sweat Exercise Plan offers you a unique point system for tracking how much exercise you are really doing, and giving you a goal to achieve each week.
The book features the No Sweat Exercise Pyramids, a set of practical, visual guides that shows the types and amounts of exercise required for good health. An easy-to-follow point system assigns points to such activities as gardening, housework, climbing stairs, and walking. You simply set goals based on their personal needs, then calculate how many points you need to get--and stay--fit.
Customer Reviews:
The best exercise adviser of all .......2006-03-19
Why do I consider this work to contain the best exercise- advice at all? The answer is because the advice it gives does not require 'exercising' as a special block of time taken in a gym, or with some special instrument. It thinks of exercise as a possible extension of everyday life- activity. We can do much exercise simply by increasing the pace at which we walk, or by lifting a few cans in the proper way each day for a few minutes. Whether we are gardening, housecleaning, shopping, mowing the lawn, climbing stairs, washing the car, playing with children , we can benefit physically by increasing the level of our activity.
We can no matter, it seems , where we are, and almost in whatever we are doing, find a way to excercise a bit more, to get ourselves moving physically in a better way. And these little bits of motion are not insignificant but can add up to better health.
As Judy Siegel writes in the 'Jerusalem Post' "The latest scientific studies shows conclusively that people can get the full health benefits of exercise with only slight modifications to their daily routines."
Simon also in this work provides a more thorough analysis of different kinds of exercise, and specific steps for improving functioning of different areas of the body.
This work would seem to have something for everyone who cares about improving their health.
Most highly recommended.
imely and Important--also Interesting.......2006-03-11
Recent news headlines said that a low fat diet does not prevent heart attacks, breast cancer, or colon cancer. I looked them up in The No Sweat Exercise Plan and found that exercise can help prevent all 3, along with many other problems. It's one example of all the important information in the book, and it's presented in a very lively and interesting way. Best of all, the book is very practical and specific. It tells you what, when , and how to exercise. It also helps you figure out which exercises you can skip because you don't really need them. I enjoyed reading the book and I'll keep it handy for reference. I recommend it very highly.
A very helpful guide.......2006-02-14
I thought I knew a lot about exercise, so I bought this book
mainly for the great drawings and instructions on stretching and weight training. But it turns out that what I didn't know about exercise could fill a book--this book, in fact. The most startling fact is that I can exercise for as little as 10 minutes at a time and still slim down, and that I don't have to
join a health club to be healthy. I've already started a "stair strider" group at work--we have a chart over the printer and we'll give a little "top flight" prize out each week. It's all good fun, but I'm convinced it will also be good for us. I'm also looking forward to spending more time reading over the
healthy diet chapter. I think it will also be very useful, but it will take a little more time to get into that side of things.
In my opinion , the book is important and enlightening. If you
don't agree, no sweat.
For Optimal Health, Just Keep on Movin'.......2006-02-09
Despite the 230+ page format, author and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Harvey B. Simon's premise in "The No Sweat Exercise Plan: Lose Weight, Get Healthy and Live Longer" takes a page out of lifetime exercise guru Jack LaLanne's recipe for a healthy and long life. The idea, so simple that it really isn't necessary to spend $21.95 on the book, can be summed up albeit it gratuitously with the catch phrase, "Keep on Truckin'" So sorry, Harvey.
Okay. Now you might have the inclination to want to `read all about it' and Dr. Simon does provide a semi-interesting format immersed in enough medical no-how to satisfy all those out there who have a need for those special credentials that validate information as `expert testimony.' Keep in mind that Simon as a medical doctor demands the requisite tests that the medical community deems `preventative medicine' and he elaborately explains the dangers of certain body signals like BMI, hypertension, high cholesterol, HDL levels etc. to help the reader to understand just how exercise as a panacean solution in general helps to slow the aging process. Mainly, Simon debunks the need for heavy-duty sweat-inducing aerobics and prescribes a European lifestyle without the saturated high fat cheeses, (although he uses strictly American examples) of moving about rather than relying on the couch potato contrivances and conveniences of modern life.
Simply said, Simon advocates four types of exercise where what he calls CME---cardo-metabolic exercise---wins as hands down most important. Using an elaborate point system he rates any exercise that elevates your heart rate and stokes up your metabolism, suggesting that around 1000 points a week should maintain good health for those without special needs. He sites 2000 points a week for those who may seriously want to lose weight. Typically, one would receive 200 points for jogging at the rate of 12 minutes per mile for 30 minutes as opposed to 165 points for 30 minutes of golfing while carrying your own clubs. Whether or not you sweat or not, Simon says is not the issue. Moving around (walking) for sustained periods of time on a daily basis remains paramount to insure good health. In his No Sweat Basic Pyramid, Dr, S suggests that good eating with an eye on nutrition provides the fuel the body needs to sustain itself---here the standard approach of watching calories in a 15% protein - 25% to 35% fat - 50% to 60% carbohydrate breakdown, avoiding sugars, trans-fats and processed foods maintains optimal vitamin and mineral intake. Following a substantial CME block on the pyramid, the three other types of exercise gain the spotlight, beginning with strength training as a separate component then a shared block of flexibility and balance training. Simon details all four types of exercise with actual diagrammed routines, establishing what he preaches as an undeniable "no brainer." Anyone who has been keeping active for years already knows what it takes the bulk of the book to say. I repeat, `just keep moving----use weight bearing exercise to keep up your muscle mass, stretching to keep your body limber and balance to prevent falling.
At the pinnacle of the No Sweat pyramid, Simon places preventative medicine and hoists a flag atop to alert one to the perils of too much stress in modern life. No real new news here, however Simon does take out the time to help you construct a `my-pyramid' of your own to help you realize your personal health goal and spends a few extra chapters explaining some of the common complaints people may initially have about adding a daily exercise regime to their life. For those who have perspired routinely in gyms and in the outdoors for over the last 25 years, he lists the types of sweaty exercise machines one can utilize to maximize the burn.
Bottom line: if your thing is to read about what you already know and have heard about for years, check this tome out of the library and get down and dirty with expert medical information about the whys and wherewithal-s pertaining to what you are already doing to maintain your health. If you haven't started yet - shame on you---this book can provide some grist for your exercise mill and set you on the right path for the future. With that in mind, I can only recommend this book to those who have been living under a rock for the last 30+ years----everyone else need not spend the going rate to vindicate their own common sense.
"No Sweat"-- an exercise plan for all ages.......2006-02-02
What a relief to know I don't have to be a serious athlete in order to stay healthy! Having recently been laid up from back surgery, (which my wife is sure was brought on by shoveling last winter's heavy snows), I wanted to resume an active life and keep my heart healthy, without re-injuring myself. This book prescribes a very congenial life style which can do that for me. In addition to cardio and strengthening exercises, it has useful chapters on stretching and balance. While these may be less important for young people, they seem particularly relevant for people who, like myself, are getting on in years. "No Sweat" is written in a very engaging style and is a pleasure to read. D.L., Meredith, New Hampshire

Delicious Island Barbecue You Can Grill Up in Your Own Backyard.......2007-02-18
Last week I went through my cookbooks, to see if I could weed some out, because I have too many to mention. It's hard getting rid of a cookbook, especially one with a few recipes in it that you've come to love. But I've scanned the recipes I need to keep forever into my MacBook. However, there were an even dozen I couldn't part with. These are books I turn to time and time again, even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef.
Dunstan Harris' and Brooke Scutter's ISLAND BARBECUE is one of the books I kept. One because the recipes are so delicish, and two, because it's informative and well written. I like the way the author's tell you about and how to use the fuels used in barbacue -- charcoal briquettes, mesqjuite charcoal and other hardwood charcoals. I like the little essays, like the origin of sauces for example, but most of all I like the delicious recipes, like the "Spicy Barbecued Tuna with Mango Salsa". You just have to try that. A favorite of my hubby's is the "Spicy Jerked Steak". Actually he likes most of what I make him from this very fine cookbook and you will too, I'm sure of that.

Wow - that is great barbecue.......1999-11-29
The marinades and sauces that are in this book make the most mouth watering barbecue that I have ever had. Most of the ingredients you can find in supermarkets. If you like a zing in your food, try this book out.
Island BBQ is a must for daydreamer's. Fun! Good source.......1998-03-23
This was a fun book to read for me. The stories that were read made the visualization process much more appealing. A cookbook should not be just recipies, but an inspiration to the craft. For me, Island Barbeque has been an inspiration as well as good source of information. I have used it to make wonderfully hot jerk marinades and sweet and spicy ginger beer, among other fantastic dishes.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-01-10
This book was an easy read and I read it in a couple of hours. It had great information that I have found very useful with my 16 week old puppy. I have learned that I need to be more patient and understand that some dogs will take a little longer to come around but it is a worth while endeavor. I have seen results with my pooch over the past week or so but it takes time, patience, and a full commitment to training your pooch to be well behave and an active member of your family. This book is not a quick fix but an aid to help you understand what has to be done to bring up a happy well adjusted pooch. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a dog or who is serious about training their dog to be productive and not destructive.
I don't advocate jerking a choke collar so wasn't impressed.......2002-07-02
I really liked the format of this book and how it breaks up the reasons why a dog could be misbehaving. However, I'm not one to advocate jerking a choke collar because I believe there are less violent methods of correction--they do indicate hitting is bad. A better read would be Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right, or Reading the Dog's Mind, or any Stanley Coren book.
chewing.......1999-03-09
This dog is a very loveable dog But all she wants to do is chew every thing. she knows she does wrong. But cant break of this habit. It is a rotweiler an a liottle over a year old?
indispensable guide for all breeds and all problems.......1999-01-09
This text helps you identify your dogs personality type and then work on specific problems according to his/her needs. This book emphasizes reconditioning as well as introductory training. It makes use of various tools such as the choke collar, shake can, and lead. I have had good success with this book with cocker spaniels to great danes. I have had timid to aggressive dogs. These tips for reconditioning focus on on-lead techniques but not exclusively. The topics in this book that I have used are: housebreaking, barking, biting, fence fighting, and carpography. This text is the one that I refer to over and over again throughout my dogs lives. When you have 3 great danes that are siblings raised entirely without a mother to guide them, you need help to guide you and this book has it all.

Tuff Stuff's Baseball Postcard Collection.......2000-05-28
If you love baseball and postcards, you have found the perfect book. Ron Menchine -- the last voice of the now gone but never forogoten Washington Senators -- has put together a delight for the mind and the eye. Not only does he show some of the hardest-to-find and beautiful baseball postcards, but his commentary on the history backing them up is as good as it gets. He knows the game -- and loves it. And it shows. What particularly caught my attention was the commentary and photos of the early 20th Century postcards, not often seen at shows or in collection. If you're looking for a comprehensive checklist book of baseball postcards through the decades this is not it. It does have some values. It is meant to be an ode to baseball and postcards -- and that is more than enough. An outstanding book that will bring many memorables hours looking, reading and remembers. Thanks, Ron, for the treat.

Product Description
William Morris 1834-1896 was one of the major figures of the Victorian age and his influence as a designer, artist, printer and writer endures until today.
Aymer Vallance who wrote this magisterial biography was a personal friend of the artist and completed the book in 1897, the year after Morris' death. Although Vallance was at pains to say that he was not writing a biography or record of Morris' private or family affairs and tndeed specifically excludes these areas from the book, his account of Morris' artistic works and achievements is so comprehensive that there is very little omitted.
Morris' main works were created within the umbrella of Morris & Co, which he founded with the help of Ford Madox Brown, Sir E Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He aimed to turn the taste and design standard of the Victorian age back to simple, natural patterns and laws. As Vallance wrote "William Morris undertook the Herculean and seemingly hopeless task of decorative reform and wrought and brought deliverance from the thraldom of the ugly, which oppressed all the so-called arts of this country".
Morris & Co originally specialised in stained glass where his main achievements were to interpret Burne-Jones' paintings, those windows at Jesus College, Cambridge and Christ Church, Oxford being particularly fine. From there he developed tiles, tapestries, carpets, materials and particularly wall-paper ..."of the many industries connected with the name of Morris, none has more universal celebrity than that of wall-paper hangings; and rightly so".
The other major work with which William Morris' name will remain forever associated is the work of the Kelmscott Press. The last and finest publication of the Kelmscott Press was Morris' design for the complete works of Chaucer which has become one of the most famous book of all time. It was his final achievement.

Book Description
Near-contemporaries, William Caslon the type-founder, and John Baskerville the printer, stand as two of the great figures in eighteenth-century British printing. This well-illustrated set includes an early memoir of Baskerville, an account of Caslon and his firm, and both figures appear in Reed's important work. A most famous book is Moxon's Mechanick Exercises which covers the full range of the technicalities of printing practice, including compositor, corrector, pressman and warehouseman, as well as including the first detailed explanation of the art of type-founding. Smith's most famous Grammar was in part based on Moxon but itself became the model of numerous subsequent grammars. Hansard's great history encompasses paper and typefounding, as well as printing, presses, and printing ink. It 'is admirably produced, and is a model of what a technical treatise should be' (Bigmore & Wyman). Savage's monumental Dictionary brings the history and art of printing up to the beginning of the Victorian era. Finally, more than a curiosity, Roberts's interesting early account of the neglected history of the printer's marks gives a unique illustrated picture of the trade itself. The history and techniques of British book illustration for the same era is to be covered in an eight-volume companion set to be published in November 1998. Faculties that may benefit from these sets include those interested in printing, fine art, design, commerce and technology, business organization, and social history.
--Important works containing information on the grammar and art of printing
--Valuable illustrated documentation on aspects and nature of the British book trade
--Good insights into the management and costs of pre-Victorian businesses

Book Description
Anna Kingsley's life story adds a dramatic chapter to histories of the South, the state of Florida, and the African diaspora. Working from surprisingly extensive records, including information and photographs from extended-family members and descendants, Daniel Shafer reconstructs and documents one slave's remarkable story.
Both an American slave and a slaveowner--and possibly an African princess--Anna was a teenager when she was captured in her homeland of Senegal in 1806 and sold into slavery. Zephaniah Kingsley, Jr., a planter and slave trader from Spanish East Florida, bought her in Havana, Cuba, and took her to his St. Johns River plantation in northeast Florida, where she soon became his household manager, his wife, and eventually the mother of four of his children. Her husband formally emancipated her in 1811, and she became the owner of her own farm and twelve slaves the following year.
For 25 years, life on her farm and at the Kingsley plantation on Fort George Island was relatively tranquil. But when Florida passed from Spanish to American control, and racism and discrimination increased in the American territories, Anna Kingsley and her children migrated to a colony in Haiti established by her husband as a refuge for free blacks. Amid the spiraling racial tensions of the antebellum period, Anna returned to north Florida, where she bought and sold land, sued white people in the courts, and became a central figure in a free black community. Such accomplishments by a woman in a patriarchal society are fascinating in themselves. To have achieved them as a woman of color is remarkable.

For Florida history buffs as well as African American Studies.......2006-01-16
Anna Madgigine Jai was a teenager (and possibly a Senegalese princess) when she was captured in her homeland and sold into slavery during a civil war in 1806. She was later purchased in Cuba by Zephaniah Kingsley, Jr., and taken to his St. Johns River plantation in northeast Florida where she became his household manager, his wife, and eventually the mother of four of his children. Her husband emancipated her in 1811, and she became the owner of her own farm and twelve slaves. The latter is not surprising since, under Spanish control, slavery was considered neither a permanent condition nor the God-given role of black people. Slaves had opportunities to buy their freedom, or owners could liberate them without penalty; free black persons were an accepted part of the caste system, able to acquire wealth and property and pass it along to their children.
While Florida was under Spanish control, Anna lived a relatively tranquil life for 25 years as a free black woman. But when Florida came under American control - which brought the racist demand that blacks should only be slaves, not free, and which outlawed interracial marriages - she and her children migrated to a colony in Haiti established by her husband as a refuge for free blacks. Despite spiraling racial tensions of the antebellum period, Anna returned to north Florida where she bought and sold land, sued white people in the courts, and became a central figure in a free black community. Kingsley Plantation at Fort George Island is now undergoing restoration by the National Park Service.
This fascinating history of one remarkable woman provides an eye-opening exploration of larger issues, in particular the complexities of slavery. To reconstruct her story - which meant deconstructing some legends, the author draws upon a wide variety of sources, both in Africa and the New World. This book will be of interest to Florida history buffs as well as African American studies.
A history that informs and entertains.......2005-11-22
Every now and then, a history comes along that not only offers a fascinating look at a past era, but also manages to hold the reader's interest and entertain. Books like David McCullough's 1776 urge a reader along much like a good novel will do. Daniel L. Schafer's Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley has the same effect.
Schafer establishes the time period based on narratives and first hand research. Documents such as an emancipation notice for a plantation owner's slave Flora Hannahan provide an unvarnished look at the perception of African-Americans in the decades before the civil war: "On the emancipation notice, she is described as 'a mulatto-colored woman of twenty years of age, a native of Florida...about five feet high.'" (pg. 59)
These descriptives are enhanced by photographs of slave quarters as well as descendants of Anna Kingsley.
This book is a solid addition to the personal library, and it would be an excellent classroom resource for teachers of history or language arts. Author Schafer writes with an objective, even-handed approach, and accurately depicts the slave trade in all its characteristics and nuances, including the African natives who colluded with Spanish and English traders and also the elite American plantation owners who enjoyed the benefits of low-cost captive labor.
Aside from its educational value, the book is a good read for anyone interested in Southern culture or Florida history. I don't know Dr. Schafer, but I certainly admire his scholarship and his ability to tell a fascinating story.
Absorbing account of Florida pioneers.......2003-06-04
Can't recommend more highly. This is fascinating history which is well-written and meticulously researched.
A Florida Princess finally gets her due........2003-05-29
Dr. Daniel Schafer, the preeminent scholar of the Kingsley's of Northeast Florida, has written a riveting book exploring Anna, the African Princess turned Slave turned Plantation Owner. Anna is without a doubt one of the most interesting people of Florida's history. She has long been overlooked by historians, but now her story is told. Anna's story sounds like a movie script. Schafer has filled in one of the important blanks of Florida's history.
