Book Description
Miss Lucy Pym, a popular English psychologist, is guest lecturer at a physical training college. The year's term is nearly over, and Miss Pym -- inquisitive and observant -- detects a furtiveness in the behavior of one student during a final exam. She prevents the girl from cheating by destroying her crib notes. But Miss Pym's cover-up of one crime precipitates another -- a fatal "accident" that only her psychological theories can prove was really murder.

Physician heal thyself.......2006-05-12
This is an enjoyable book, but it's not "Daughter of Time." It takes almost 2/3 of the entertainingly descriptive book to get to the mystery. One can guess the mystery, though clues are rare, but the author presents a double-whammy ending that blows you away. Unfortunately, it's a bit disturbing. The title is key to understanding Miss Pym, so-called expert on psychology. However, I think there's another explanation for her "action." After all, she could have acted again. So, to understand the book (whether this is what Tey meant or not), consider that individuals have styles of activity including: compromise, negotiation, directive, collaborative, & avoidance in varying measure. Usually one predominates. Seems to me that the last one predominates here. From a moral point of view (let alone legal), it also seems to me that the book demonstrates the risk of playing God. I don't think I like Miss Pym after all.
Late Suspense.......2006-04-19
Psychology is admirable theoretically but when put into context of practicalities its result is not as shiny - that is what Miss Pym discovers in her experience being at Leys College as a celebrity guest. The first three quarter of the book deals with the eccentricities of each student, staff, and guest at an English college for girls. In fact, most of the characters are females. My favorite is Dakers whose dialogues are imprudently gaily. No male characters play important roles in Ms. Tey's story although they do exist. Nearly at the end of the book, a mystery surfaces and its ending is of a certain meandering. My disappointment is that the accident happens too belated in the book. Especially when the back cover boasts of "A gripping mystery classic ..." and it turns out that most of the story is about a rigorous college life - quite dissatisfying. But, Ms. Tey did have a wonderful sense of humor - the proof was in her language and the amusing personalities that she created for this particular tale.
Rather dated..........2003-05-22
I've always liked Josephine Tey , especially Brat Farrar, The Singing Sands and The Man in the Queue but, unlike those books, I found this book to be rather dated in terms of plot and dialogue and the character of Miss Pym to be somewhat tedious and pedantic. I don't think it's held up as well as the best of Tey's work. If you've never read Tey before, this is definitely not the book to start with.
Totally absorbing, fascinating characters: Great Mystery!.......2002-10-04
~ ~ - ~ ~
I first read "Miss Pym Disposes" as a young teen, and was immediately swept away into the young woman's physical therapy training school she is visiting. The same happened in re-reading this book as an adult. I was swept away again on this wonderful journey.
~ ~ - ~ ~
Josephine Tey does an astounding job of immersing the reader in the lives, worries, fears, and doubts of the young women attending the school. When an "unlikable" girl is murdered, Miss Pym, and the reader have our eyes focused on all the other girls, wondering about their motives.
But just when you think you understand, the view shifts, and everything has to be reinterpreted.
~ ~ - ~ ~
This is a beautifully written, rich, complex, absorbing mystery. The author's ability to interest us in the lives and dreams of the main characters is phenomenal. You'll find yourself cheering for the girl who is a shy mouse, and resenting the slyness and pettiness of the young woman who becomes the victim.
~ ~ - ~ ~
The surprise ending is inspired. But this mystery's greatness doesn't rely only on a surprising plot twist. What carries us in fascination all through the book is the way the characters come to life. Reading the story, we feel allied with the "guest", Miss Pym, hoping to solve the mystery, but worrying how the outcome will affect the "heroes" that we've come to know and love.
Mysterious Ending.......2002-07-08
I think the ending lacks closure but it makes you want to go back and reread the parts where Miss Pym speaks to Mary Innes after showing her the pin. I thought that the last few lines of the book were horrible but I liked the way the story ended with Miss Pym finding out just at the last moment who could have done it. The book gets four stars because it has a good solid plot. Overall, I liked it.
Customer Reviews:
An incredible buy.......2006-05-14
This book contains 3 delightful novels (of only 8 written) by Tey. All 3 are wonderful period pieces illustrating English life with terrific characterizations, dialog, psychological discussions, & moral dilemmas. The mystery tends to take a back seat to the basic novel, however. Tey also provides some pithy comments: From Miss Pym Disposes: p. 122: As a psychologist she began to suspect she was a very good teacher of French.
From The Franchise Affair: p. 213: The Governor; to whom a tear in the eye was just a drop of H2O.
p. 295: If you see a giraffe once a year it remains a spectacle; if you see it daily it becomes part of the scenery.
p. 298: The less he knows about a thing the more strongly he feels about it.
From Brat Farrar: p. 414: If you thought about the unthinkable long enough it became quite reasonable.
While each novel is probably a 4.5 star (or close), IMHO the collection rates higher. Enjoy this fantastic collection!

Book Description
Arthur Fenn is an ordinary young professor with an esoteric specialty, Comparative Mythology. He is in financial trouble and suddenly finds himself in possession of a magical spell that allows him access to the realm of the gods. He may be a professor, but he's got no common sense--so when he goes there, he makes the mistake of inviting a con-man god and his companions back to Earth. What develops is a fantastic mess full of rich opportunities for humor, satire, and surprise.Arthur's mistake unbalances his own life, life on Earth, and the lives of the gods in their realm....and universal darkness threatens to cover all. Chaos spread on a greater and greater scale until all creation is threatened. It's a good thing that Arthur is able to find the courage and self-confidence to save the day, even if the universe has to die and be reborn
Customer Reviews:
It has its moments, but overall disjoint and unfocused.......2000-07-28
Robert Sheckley has written some great, absurd satire, so I'm interested when he comes up with something new. I enjoyed the early chapters of this book, but as it went along, it simply lost focus, randomly introducing and abandoning characters and situations. It was clever in many ways, but the disintegrating structure lost me.
Sheckley wrote many short stories in the 1950's and 60's, and some say those were his best work. It has probably always been a challenge for him to hold a long story together. But some of his novels have been great -- my favorites are "Mindswap" and "Journey of Joenes". Most of his work is out of print, but it's worth looking for if you've got a taste for the absurd.
Wonderful, absurdist nonsense from a master satirist!.......1999-09-16
Those who have arrived at Robert Sheckley's literary doorstep via one of his t.v. or movie-based science fiction serial novels (Deep Space Nine, Aliens, Babylon 5) are sure to experience major disorientation with "Godshome." But those who are already acquainted with the brilliantly original writing of this masterful, erudite nutcase will be delighted to encounter vintage Sheckley--complete with a shaggy dog storyline, chuckleheaded characters, and biting, unrelenting, Swiftian wit. Robert Sheckley is to science fiction what Botticelli was to the Renaissance--a maverick original who's impossible to compare with anyone else in his time, but without whom, the era would be less rich. With "Godshome," Sheckley is not content merely to satirize human folly; he brazenly satirizes existence and the very universe itself, by pairing together, as he always does, mundanity and magnitude in a wacky cosmic tango. "Godshome" is a fun, thoughtful read and I highly recommend it.
Not worth the time.......1999-01-22
This book had some interesting ideas and situations in it, but the author never bothered to bring closure to any of it. The focus shifts bewilderingly from character to character without much in the way of a unifying plot to it. The final pages are a stopping point rather than an ending or resolution. It was extremely frustrating to have spent the time reading this book, only to seemingly watch the whole thing come apart by the finish and result in nothing.
I won't be reading this author in the future. And I'd suggest the publisher hire better editors.
Amusing, but ultimately unsatisfying.......1999-01-03
My immediate thought after finishing this book was that Robert Sheckley should apologize for wasting so many words. While well-written, this book was a disappointment to say the least, and irritating to say the most. It jumps from Neat Concept to Neat Concept without bothering to do more than touch upon them briefly. We're dragged from one scene to the next in a careless, offhanded fashion. Characters appear onstage, have a few lines, and are gone, without any sort of depth to them. It's like channel-surfing on a ten-second interval, which is about how long some of the chapters take to read. The book moves with increasing speed, tossing plot to the wind in an increasingly frustrating way, with little rhyme or reason, culminating in a mindbogglingly confusing ending which leaves a lot to be desired. I will admit, however, that it's a well-written book. It just left me unsatisfied and frustrated. As a parody, or a comment on the way the universe works, it's a good read. As a serious work of fiction, it's not. Robert Sheckley tosses away more good concepts, any of which could hold a book up on their own, than some authors use in an entire trilogy. Ultimately, I must admit that I don't regret reading this book. I merely regret spending the money to buy it in hardback. Casual readers, be thus advised.

Book Description
Internationally renowned yoga instructor Rodney Yee is the host of more than 17 bestselling yoga videos. In Moving Toward Balance, Yee outlines an 8-week program of basic yoga postures, meditation, and breath awareness intended to lead practitioners toward balance-physical, emotional, and psychological. Each lesson is illustrated with full-color photographs and is laid out in sequential order, so there is no need to flip back and forth to put together a practice session. And each pose is shown with variations to accommodate different levels of strength and flexibility. At the core of Moving Toward Balance, and what distinguishes it from other yoga books on the market, is its emphasis on a home practice, enabling readers to focus on what works best for their own body without the distraction of the classroom. In addition, both beginner and advance practitioners will appreciate Yee's advice on altering or extending the basic practice to address such specific concerns as back pain, stress, and emotional problems.
Customer Reviews:
Great Yoga book.......2007-09-11
Excellent photos and instruction. Easy to follow. Best book in my Yoga library. Highly recommended. If you are a beginner or advanced yoga enthusiast you will enjoy this.
Love it.......2007-05-22
I have bought a number of yoga books and videos over the years, many of which sit unused on my shelf. I find this book to be completely inspiring. It makes me want to practice at home. Seeing the many beautiful pictures of Rodney's perfect form helps me tremendously. I would not recommend it for a complete beginner, because I think you should have a basic familiarity of the poses so you don't hurt yourself. But for someone who has a basic knowledge of the poses and has been putting off practicing at home, or doing more challenging poses at home, like me, this is a wonderful book. I like that you can go at the pace of your own breath rather than trying to keep up with a video. Thanks Rodney and Nina for a great job!
Great for Beginners.......2007-02-28
I think that this is THE book for beginners. I have tried many DVD's and other books, and this is the best. It is really an 8 week introduction to basic yoga. The book starts with the easier standing poses, and works from there. Each week you begin by trying the poses featured that week three ways: first, you try the pose the easiest way with props and supports (like blankets, yoga bricks, a wall or chair for balance, etc.); the second way is with a little less support; and the final way is the pose without support. This is a great approach, because it allows you to do the yoga at your pace and ability: you can do the tree pose holding onto the wall if need be, bend your knees during downward dog, do a modified backbend without lifting your head and shoulders off the floor, and begin headstand (much later in the book) by walking your feet up the wall, etc. This is much better than jumping into a dvd where you are already supposed to know how to do it. After you have tried all the poses with modifications, and without, if you are able; the rest of the days of the week feature two poses each in particular to focus on, along with review. Everything is covered in detail with pictures, all the poses, with modifications and without, and how to do a sun salutation and so on. The pictures are beautiful and clear and the book is written in Rodney Yee's encouraging style. Best of all, you can take your time getting into a pose and do not have to worry about keeping up with a dvd. I have no experience in yoga, and I love this book. I am 38 years old.
Build your own yoga routine.......2007-02-21
This book is profusely and clearly illustrated. Each position is presented in three variations for beginner, intermediate and advanced practitioners. I also have some of Rodney's DVD's which show how he moves. I find it helpful to think of him as the Michael Jordan of yoga. I don't expect I will ever dunk like Jordan nor will I yoga like Yee. But his actions are clear and I am guided into further practice by his materials, adding a new asana every so often.
I couldn't get through the preface.......2007-02-05
Consider these quotes from the preface of _Moving Toward Balance_:
"You move toward balance in your mind because in your practice you learn to focus more and more on the present moment. This moves you away from a judging mind and toward a mind that is constantly noticing and adapting to what is taking place, creating a sense of contentment with things as they are."
-- _Moving Toward Balance_, p. xiii.
And again:
"To be present in whatever arises, I believe we must not only be aware of what is arising but we must also be able to see all things that arise as equal, with detachment."
-- _Moving Toward Balance_, page ix.
In his coverage of asana practice, Yee comes across as earnest and sincere -- in his DVDs too. But the amoral pronouncements in the preface of this book left me wanting to get off the train at the next stop.
Would Yee really consider it equal, for example, to find himself in a war zone, a slum, or a prison cell rather than, as on the book's cover and in his DVDs, demonstrating yoga practice on a nice beach in Hawaii? Is he just as unconcerned about other people too? Where is human kindness to be found in this approach to life?
Other reviewers have commented on Yee's getting too advanced with the asanas; perhaps he also gets ahead of his readers with yogic philosophy. Joseph Alter's book Yoga in Modern India: The Body between Science and Philosophy cites Ian Whicher as explaining that yoga transcends comprehension, because that is rooted in the senses and located in the intellect; yoga then can't be understood till true understanding is achieved. Perhaps Yee speaks from this standpoint, but then how can he expect readers to understand him!?
I accept the lessons of yoga of approaching situations as they exist, with equanimity, and being present in addressing them. But I find the assertion that all situations may be regarded as equal to be profoundly alienating and antisocial.
OK, I said it. Now, should I offer apologies for being judgmental?
Let's look into another tradition and see whether it offers some useful counsel. Jesus of Nazareth said, "judge not, lest ye be judged." Good thought, but on the other hand, Jesus also threw over the money changers' tables in the temple.
I suppose I'll just have to approach that apparent contradiction with equanimity, and leave you with another favorite quote, from Dr. Martin Luther King:
"Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted."
I'll take some comfort, if not in the promise of salvation, at least in the challenge.

So begins Let's Open a Bottle - an original, fascinating and humorous look at the Spanish wine revolution. The author, a U.S expatriate living in Madrid for the past fifteen years, takes the reader on his personal journey to search out a three-thousand-year-old tradition undergoing a veritable turnaround of the likes never seen before. But there is more in this book for you than just Spanish wine and the revolution. You will also read about the bones beneath the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the current state of the wild boar in Murcia, what ingredients go into the stew Cocido Madrileño, why some highways are toll roads, what tallar means in the language of Catalan, where the country's best haunted house is, how the author nearly sold his soul to a tailor and much, much more.
Let's Open a Bottle will appeal to the wine enthusiast as well as the novice; the avid traveler or those looking to take their first adventure to Spain. Or anyone looking to read a good adventure story. This book is fun, easy to read and filled with charm and wit. Open it up and see or yourself.

Uniquely entertaining.......2005-09-12
Books on Spanish wine are difficult to find, good books on Spanish wine are rare and books such as Brian Murdock's are unique. Not only is it up-to-date and thorough but it blends a current knowledge of the Spanish wine industry with insights into Spain's history and culture. Robert Parker (aka God), the world's leading wine critic, has said of Spanish wine that,"Spain has done an outstanding job of maintaining respect for its traditions of the past and also looking forward to the future." This wine revolution is perfectly captured in Murdock's book.
However, this is not just a (well above) average reference book on Spanish wine regions and their wines. This book is far more. It is a personal journey, literally, among the highways and byways- most Spanish wineries are on byways- where the author talks to a wide cross-section of individuals involved in wine-making. This allows the reader to hear the voices of those actually making the wide variety of quality wines which Spain is now producing.
In this personal account the author's acute perceptions, deep knowledge, wit and sheer passiopn of and for Spanish wines burns through. At the end of this excellent read Murdock modestly states that he is no 'expert' but '...after a helluvah lot of work, I also should know what I am talking about.' Indeed he does.
As a wine merchant based in Spain and having visited many of the same places and tasted the same wines as the author I can bear witness to its accuracy and insight. This first-class book will appeal not only to all those who wish to explore Spanish wines but also ita charming people and rich culture.
Entertaining and Informative.......2005-04-14
This is a great read and should not be simply thought of as another boring guide to wine. The author weaves plenty of humor and history into this aptly named "Journey Through the Spanish Wine Revolution". The reader learns how and why the vast history of the Iberian Peninsula has shaped today's Spanish wine industry. The end result is not only do I seek out Spanish wines in restaurants and stores, but I also want to travel to Spain to check out the various regions and their unique cultures and geographies. I should also note that I have given this book as a gift to a few people who have loved it as well.
Like Wine & History? Here's Your Bible.......2005-02-11
As someone who's trying to learn more about the "wine culture" after years of clueless intrigue, I finally found the perfect source. While it primarily discusses wines from a lesser known country/producer(Spain), this book provides a firm backbone that's easily translatable across wine regions around the world. Not sure what to expect when I started, I was quickly taken by the extreme detail discussing individual wines and vineyards, and how they vary from region to region. As much as I learned about various "reds" and "whites", I received an equally thorough education on the history of each region. Humor and a lighter tone throughout make this a fun, interesting, and very informative read.
More than a wine guide!.......2004-12-30
When I see this book, I thought "OK, a modern guide for spanish wines, I'll get it". But it's much more than this! It's a really good landscape of the spanish wine culture, with many facts surrounding the wine and spanish people.
I think Mr. Murdock has done a really good job, and it will be useful for many pepole who loves wine and wants to know more about Spain, its wine and the people who lives there.
5 stars are for all the book if we excepts the part for andalusian wines. They are worth of a full book! :-)
A perfect gift or a perfect self-gift.

Very nice book and covers the POM subject very nicely. Very good buy.
Easy to read - Excellent Grooming Instructions!.......2004-11-08
As a first time pom owner, grooming had to be one of the most intimidating challenges that I faced. This book not only describes in great detail how to groom your new dog, but has excellent pictures for those of us who need a little extra help. It also includes in depth feeding and medical instructions that made me feel much more educated when I brought Precious home for the first time. I was extremely impressed with the knowledge put into this book and would highly recommend it to all new pom owners - it has everything you could ever need!
Stunning Pom pics - easy to read - Pom-specific Vet advice........2003-08-25
This book just arrived, and we immediately read it completely through. First off, the pictures are STUNNING!
Scattered throughout the book are full page personal stories of Pom owners, and one or two of them are quite sad.
Most of them are upbeat, though - and they will all touch your heart!
Although written by an experienced Pom judge and breeder, this book is intended as an instruction manual for new Pom owners.
It also serves well as a reference guide for owners not familiar with how to deal with Pom-specific issues like excessive barking or grooming the Pom's thick coat.
It is written in a clear, easy to read style (we couldn't even detect a British accent!)
And, the health section is written by a veterinarian, specifically for Poms! Nearly all the medical sections of the Pomeranian books we've seen were written as generic dog health guides - so this is a refreshing change!
We give this book 5 stars, and highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-07-04
My husband and I bought this book after seeing it at my brothers and love everything about it. You don't have to be a designer to make beautiful arrangements.
Split Decision.......2006-01-21
The front section of the book, with its glossy format, is a visual treat. The latter portion, with its faded photographs and mossy contrasts in typeset and paper color made me wonder if I had received a misprinted copy of the book. Not only will the planted containers need good light, I'll need it to read about how to put them together!
Nice book for a beginner...........2005-12-18
What's not to like about P.Allen Smith's approach to gardening? A favorite of Public Television fans, and the fellow who pops up on the Weather channel, Smith is a font of information for the new home gardener. In his nifty new book CONTAINER GARDENS he shows once again that he has many answers to questions the novice might have about a particular topic. Smith follows the seasons of the year discussing what you might display when spring arrives (bulbs and other spring flowers), summer heat bakes everything (some plants like it hot), fall colors the garden, and winter deposits snow and icicles. I must confess, I generally empty most of my pots when late fall arrives as few are frost proof, but I have purchased some containers in recent years that can weather the coldest temperatures and their contents survive freezing. Smith discusses the pots and pot materials you can use to defy temperature extremes be they hot or cold.
Smith suggests winter is the time when the garden is most subtle with its barks, berries and winter blooms, and last year I prepared a few winter containers using ideas he describes in this book. For one thing, pansies seem to be able to stand cold weather and often on a mild winter day their cheerful little faces pop through the snow to greet you. Some bulbs like Galanthus (snow drops) and Scilla will bloom early and give you a hint of the nice weather to come. Hellebores (and Crocus in my Virginia garden) are famous for their winter appearance, as noted in the Christmas carol "Lo a Rose Er Blooming" and small evergreen plants such as miniature hollies and needled trees also can be used to great effect. You can also try your hand at indoor pots. If you work outdoors, the key is to use a weatherproof container so the contents don't freeze and crack the sides of the pot. Smith's book is a great book for beginners and those of us who have been gardening a while.

P. Allen Smith's Container Gardens: 60 container recipes to accent your garden
Clarkson Potter
ISBN 1-4000-5343-9
Yes, you do get in this book 60 reasonably practical container recipes, each complete with a large colour photograph (plants clearly labelled), a diagram of the planted container and list of plants required. There is also some accompanying text which you can skip; it adds very little to your understanding of the recipe.
About three quarters of the book is devoted to two-page, full-colour glossy presentations of each container design, presented by season throughout the year.
The remainder of the book is information about potting sheds, plant care and a plant directory. This section is not glossy, not in full colour, and does not relate visually to the rest of the book. In fact the illustrations and much of the text is hidden behind a muddy yellow wash that made me wonder if my eyes were playing tricks on me. I don't know what the book designer/art director was smoking but the result is horrible.
What you have here is a large format, coffee table book with a photo of a cute young guy (shirt open) on the front. If you need yet another book about container gardening, or if you like to have a picture of a cute young guy gazing dreamily up at you from your coffee table, then by all means buy this book.
60 Container Recipes to Accent Your Garden by P. Allen Smith.......2005-09-14
As a novice gardener, I found this book to be very informative and easy to read. Planting in pots for appearance and texture to suit my climate and zone make an easy beginner garden. P. Allen Smith offers many ideas that spark my own imagination and creativy. I enjoy owning this book!

Product Description
John Fass and his work at the Hammer Creek Press are practically unknown today except to a small group of devoted cognoscenti. Unlike Rogers, Updike, or Dwiggins, Fass was essentially a private printer, working alone at his own pace. What he did was done for his own pleasure. But his work, small in size and issued in minuscule editions, was exquisite and executed with impeccable taste. He was a genius at the arrangement of type, ornaments, and wood engravings. Every piece he produced was a small gem, for Fass had the time, skill, and materials to print everything by hand patiently and perfectly. No wonder the emblem he chose for his press was a turtle.
In this lovely little volume, with its text printed letterpress and its plates in four solid colors, we can discover not only Fass's life and work, but through the efforts of the late, beloved Herman Cohen, a complete checklist of his output. This is our bijou of the year, issued in an edition of a thousand copies and directed at our loyal constituents who know good work when they see it.
