3 out of 5 stars Mrs. Pollifax meets old friends.......2003-04-17

The newly-married Mrs. Pollifax is in the process of fixing up her new home in the country when Bishop appears on her doorstep and offers her another assignment for the CIA. Cyrus is out of town and Mrs. P. must give an immediate answer, so an hour later she is on her way to Hong Kong. Her mission is to contact Sheng Ti, whom she met in an earlier book and find out what is going on at Feng Imports where Sheng Ti is working for an agent named Detwiler. Detwiler's reports to the CIA have proved to be false, so he is suspected of being a counterspy and giving evidence to the enemy. Mrs. Pollifax meets some other interesting characters, including a psychic, and another old friend who is a reformed cat burglar while in pursuit of the truth about Feng Imports. She is captured and suffers from some unnecessarily harsh treatment, probably the reason this is not most people's favorite book of the series.

(Review of the audiotape, no longer available (?) )

Two books after going on safari, Mrs. Pollifax is now married to Cyrus, the gentleman she met on that safari. Marriage, however, doesn't slow her down, as she's sent to Hong Kong to meet up with someone she knew from the previous outing (which unfortunately I have not yet read). Enroute she meets a psychic on the plane, something that disheartened me: not only am I extremely skeptical of psychics, but it's very easy for the writer to use the psychic to effectively perform magic and circumvent plot holes through mysticla means. Not surprisingly, this psychic's ability waxes and wanes according to the author's needs, in one instance finding someone's body in a particular hut in Hong Kong, while, when Mrs. Pollifax is in danger, can only indicate a broad area where she might be - of course, since the book would be over if they could find her!

Other than that, it's another good read, with typically vivid characters both in the text and brought to life by Rosenblat's superb narrative skills. Mildly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Downright Disturbing.......2001-07-04

I remember distinctly that my grandmother did not care for this episode in the Pollifax adventures. "Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha" was a little too violent and disturbing for her. I, on the other hand, love it! Thrilling, exciting, never a dull moment. Not for the squeamish!

5 out of 5 stars Yet another intriguing adventure!.......1998-03-10

Mrs. Pollifax has done it again! This story was wonderfully suspenseful! I did feel sorry for Cyrus, though, I mean coming to Hong Kong thinking his wife is perfectly safe and finds she's been kidnapped by terrorists! I'm glad everything turned out OK. There's one more thing I want to say; these books were reccommended to me by a nice elderly woman at Media Play and I just want to say, where ever you are, thanks.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-12-31

Of all the Books in the Villain series this is the best, followed closly by Black Wing. It is a great story with great characters. There is something special about this book, that I just can;t seem to put my finger on. But I can tell you this, if you like reading about the villians rise to power, you will love this one.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-12-25

This was the book that got me hooked on Dragonlance. Its is very well writen. The characters are well developed and the story is very easy to follow. Even if you don't understand the Dragonlance universe. I would highly recomend this book to anyone just gettting into Fantasy.

2 out of 5 stars HUH? WHERE IS THE REST OF THE STORY!.......2002-11-17

... The first 100 pages of this book are fantastic. Then the books takes a boring turn. The rest of the story is boring. The characters are bland, the writing is slow. At the end of the book I was waiting on what would happen next. Didn't Ariakas surround qualinesti. I wanted this covered! Instead we get a boring history of how Draconians came about stretched into over 300 pages. Skip this book!

4 out of 5 stars Good book but..........2002-09-20

I really enjoyed this book but there s a little thing that bothers me: Ariakas' father was killed by his own son if we refer to the Chronicles and it s not the case in this book. But I still recommend this book as it shows how Ariakas became such a powerful lord.

4 out of 5 stars Evil can be Good.......2001-09-29

Obviously Ariakas is my all time favorite character in the Dragonlance novels. I have been trying to get this book for years and finally succeded (thanks to amazon). Unlike other reviews this book i thought was not boring at all. There was plenty of sword figthing, magic and love making in this book, what more can you ask for. Ok, lets be honest, evil characters are the most interesting to read about. They are unpredictable, noncaring, and will kill anyone at anytime, but will always lose at the end :( (only bad thing). For those who have read the chronicles all know how Ariakas dies, which bothers me, think about this, he was a great swordsman, can cast spells with the aid of Takhisis, has immense physical strength, commands thousands, men tremble before him. What more can you ask for. Dragon Highlord Ariakas deserves the utmost respect even if your 100% good, and i truly believe if they had to kill him off it should have been in a much more honorable way.

The older children get, the more words they know and can use-including hurtful words. This book teaches children to think before they speak, then choose what to say and how to say it. They learn that there is a connection between hurtful words and feelings of anger, sadness, and regret. They explore positive ways to respond when others say mean or unkind words to them. And they discover the importance of saying "I'm sorry," two little words that can be a big help. Includes activities and discussion starters that parents, caregivers, and educators can use when working with children.

4 out of 5 stars Sticks and stones.......2007-09-23

Most of us have heard the old saying... sticks and stones may break my bones but your words can never hurt me, yet we have all been hurt by the unkind words of others. I use this book as an elementary level teaching tool to help children understand that words can hurt feelings and so they must choose thier words carefully. The book is wonderfully illustrated and is a good companion with the book, "Hands are not for Hitting,"

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book.......2007-08-27

She wants me to read this book over and over. She likes to review the differences between words and she now knows what's acceptable to say versus what's not. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars True title, true story.......2007-08-05

A book that needs to be in the hands of every parent. I am raising two of my grandchildren. Needless to say, they are hurting, and have used words to hurt one another, and others. This book was a God send. I highly recommend it!
A great aid for teachers too!

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-07-13

My son loves this book! I can't wait to buy the other books in the series.

I purchased this book, among others, because I was told that my 4 year old son was teasing at preschool. Not only is the book excellent, but simply saying the title when I feel my son is acting unkind often snaps him out of it. I often use the other titles in the series the same way. ("Jimmy, hands are not for hitting", "Feet are not for kicking", etc.)and even though we haven't read the other books, it has the same effect...he seems to snap out of it and apologizes.

                          I highly recommend!

Bold, bold, bold, bold, bold! It is a word constantly associated with Bobby Flay and with good reason: he doesn't like to be subtle. "Party dishes that are bold and fragrant," "Next time you cook, take a big bold step...." "My party dishes make for a fragrant and bold mix." And yes, bold is an excellent word to describe Bobby Flay's from My Kitchen to Your Table (aptly subtitled 125 Bold Recipes). Flay's genius for mixing Latin flavors and blending cuisines is indeed bold. Dishes such as Pan-Roasted Rabbit with Crushed Blackberry-Ancho Sauce and Yellow Corn-Coated Soft-shell Crabs with Red Chile-Mustard Sauce come from equal parts conviction and adventure. But best of all, these recipes work.

In Bobby Flay's from My Kitchen to Your Table, he shows how to prepare dishes that are perfect for social gatherings. These are party dishes in which the distinction between appetizer and main course is purposely blurred. Flay likes meals with attitude--lively, colorful dishes all served at once. Forget about separate courses--set out all the dishes at the same time and encourage the guests to dig in. No appetizer, accompaniment, or main course. As Flay likes to say, "it's all just food."

That is an easy statement to make if you are an award-winning chef with your own television show and author of the acclaimed Bobby Flay's Bold American Food (there's that word again). Still, Flay makes his food accessible. The recipes are easy to follow. And recipes that sound intimidating, such as Skewered Lamb with Rioja Red Wine Vinaigrette, are, in actuality, simple to prepare.

So take a tip from Bobby Flay: have fun with your cooking, be adventurous, exuberant, and entertaining. Most of all, be bold. --Mark O. Howerton

                          Book Description

You've seen him on The Food Network, grillin' and chillin'. And on Lifetime's The Main Ingredient, demystifying cooking. And if you're lucky, you've eaten in one of Bobby Flay's three New York city restaurants. Now Bobby's using his formidable culinary talents to turn entertaining on its ear, sharing the secrets of his kitchen and making them accessible to you.

"Why make a meal that you can't enjoy with everyone else?" asks Bobby. "Let me introduce you to food that is fun!" And fun it is. Bobby's party dishes are a bold and fragrant mix. Nothing is designed specifically to be an appetizer or a main course--instead, everything is heaped in large bowls or arranged on oversized platters and set out on the table at the same time. To help you in the kitchen, recipes are organized according to where the dish is prepared or how it is served ("From the Oven," "Cool Platters"), with easy-to-find ingredients and simple-to-follow instructions. Many of the dishes or their components can be made ahead of time.

                          2 out of 5 stars BADLY WRITTEN.............2003-12-09

While I was strolling through a book store recently I can across Bobby Flay's book. I had eaten at BOLO a few days prior and thought the food was pretty good so I said "What the a Heck", I went ahead and bought it. Even though the recipies are good, the way it was written is almost as bad as his speech and personallity is on the food network! I found it very hard to follow some of his recipies and bad luck for you if you dont live near an area where you can find some of the ethnic spices and ingrediences he uses that the recipies call for. Overall, recipies are ok but needs to be written better.

                          Book Description

What does your cat really want when it rubs up against your leg?
Is it showing affection or aggression when it sucks a hole in your favorite sweater?
Why does it turn up its nose at the cat food you bought on sale, settling only for the most expensive meal?

Making use of the latest scientific evidence on animal consciousness, Dr. Milani shows how a thorough understanding of feline anatomy, physiology, and behavior can lead to a warm and lasting bond between cats and the people who love them. She also lets us know what our responses to feline behavior tell the cat about us and our emotions.

The Body Language and Emotion of Cats is a fascinating guide to understanding this enigmatic pet and provides a way to enrich and expand the bond between owner and cat.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-06-12

This was a real eye-opener for me. It was amazing to read of the complex range of behaviours and emotions you can spot simply from looking at a cat. Barry, my spaniel, and I often watch Maureen, next door's Persian as she walks across the wall at the end of my garden. We have detected disdain as she walks away from us with her tail in the air and back-eye winking, and smug pity as she eyes Barry's vain yapping from behind the French windows, but I am intrigued to learn that cats can feel pessimistic and have a rudimentary concept of the bourgeoisie and slapstick humour.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing and delightful insight!.......2000-11-03

Being a cat owner myself, when I found this book I was curious enough for an impulse buy. Once I started reading it however, I found it hard to put down. The detail and explanations of daily behaviors that I saw in my own cats cleared up many questions. Forgive the pun, but my curiosity far from killed my cats, if anything it has brought us closer together. I highly recomend this book to any cat owner who wants to better understand their cat!

1 out of 5 stars All the charm of an autopsy.......2000-01-29

If you're looking for a fun book about cat communication be sure to pass this one by. It's long on physiology - for example, a detailed explanation about how purring is produced - but very short on psychology: There's little discussion of what causes a cat to purr.

The author takes a completely clinical approach to her subject matter. For her cat ownership is obviously a very serious business, fraught with difficulties. She addresses only "problem" behavior - as if cats' actions and antics couldn't also be curiously delightful and funny. She perceives bonding with cats as an obstacle for humans, worthy of an entire instructional chapter.

Somehow I thought that a book with this title would have rich insights into all kinds of cat behavior. I expected some humor; maybe a little anthropomorphizing; and the kind of warmth I feel from the three sweet little furballs now dozing on my lap. No such luck. It has all the charm of an autopsy.

Unlike most books on this subect, this edition has very few color photos and print quality is that of a copy machine. Its only redeming quality is its price listings that are already three years old.

GREAT HISTORY OF FOUR PEN COMPANIES AND THEIR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTS. I FIND THE BOOK TO BE DIFFICULT IN TRYING TO FIND THE PRICE . PRICES ARE LISTED IN ABOUT FIVE DIFFERENT PLACES THROUGH OUT THE BOOK, SOME LISTED AFTER THE COMPANY SECTION. SOME BY PAGE, NOT NAME. THE COLOR SECTION IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT TRY TO FIND THE MANUFACTURE AND THE PRICE GUIDE--- IT TAKES ALOT OF FLIP-FLOPPIN' BACK AND FORWARD TO FIND ALL THE INFORMATION I NEED. ALOT OF OVER KILL ON ALL THOSE "OLD" ADDS. FROM A CONKLIN TO A EPENCO I RATE THIS A 66.

Considering the size of this volume, it is amazingly devoid of substance or content. Althought the author has done a creditable job of collecting photos (mostly B&W), and reprinting vintage advertisements, no additional information, which might have added perspective or insight, is provided. How can you date a Parker Vacumatic? What years are indicated by three bands versus one? Which colors or model variations are most common or rarest? These are the types of information that would have made this book useful to both beginning and experienced collectors. Unfortunately, the author provides none of this, and what results is a virtually useless hodgepodge of recycled advertisements.

If there were pictures in this book, it would be the best book I own on the subject. I love the chapter written about the background on the holiday and there were some really good decorating ideas. I wish the author would do a new edition on this book with color photographs of the projects.

There's only one thing that keeps "A Halloween How-To" from being the perfect Halloween book and that is that there are no color photographs. That one little drawback aside, this is maybe the best book on Halloween I've ever seen and I've reviewed a LOT of them. Unlike some of the more cutesy-crafty books on the market, this book is more designed for the real Halloween aficionado. This is the person whose more interested in scaring the pants off trick or treaters rather than winning an award from the neighborhood garden committee.

The first chapter covers tips on decorating your hose and yard and range from the simple to the very elaborate. Fake Tombstones can be pretty expensive if you buy them in the stores but this book shows how you can make them inexpensively from builder's foam and some paint. Another quick project is the quarter (or more) of dancing lawn ghosts made with old bed sheets stuffed with plastic bags on wooden dowel rods and then arranged in a circle. More elaborate projects can be made by a concoction called Monster Mud, which can be used to mold creatures from. Tips on proper lighting for your outdoor display are included as well. The second chapter covers everything you need to know about choosing, carving, and preserving your pumpkin. A great trip is rubbing it with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil after you carve it to keep it from drying out too fast.

Chapter three deals with costumes and make-up, and features designs for fifty different homemade costumes, and patterns for making things like capes and hooded robes. Beyond that it provides techniques for spattering blood on clothing or giving your clothing an aged, rotted look. There are also recipes for making your own costume blood from corn syrup and red food coloring.

Parties are covered in chapter four and these are squarely aimed at adults with various themed parties such as gothic or Victorian theme. Ideas for décor, invitations, recipes and games are included along suggested Halloween readings from such classic writers as Poe and Ambrose Bierce. They even tell you how to hold your own séance! Chapter five is a nice accompaniment with its suggestions for music, sound effects and the best scary films to watch on Halloween. One of my favorites is "The Lady in Whites". Chapter six follows up with dozens of recipes.

The longest chapter in the book and my personal favorite is the one on Haunted Destinations. The author takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of some of the best and creepiest destinations to visit during the Halloween season. The witch-haunted town of Salem, MA, has their three week long Haunted Happenings that begins the second week of October with various parades, parties, candlelight tours of haunted sites throughout the region. Take a trip to Sleepy Hollow in New York for their annual Halloween festivities or down to New Orleans to visit the Voodoo museum or the famous cemetery crypts. Other destinations include tours of the Edgar Allan Poe gravesite in Baltimore, the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast in Fall River, Bachelor's Grove Cemetery outside of Chicago, and many other ghostly sites. The book also lists some of the more famous seasonal Halloween attractions like haunted houses and hayride out on by various cities throughout the country.

The book concludes by taking a look at some of the more infamous Halloween myths and current trends of the Halloween holiday. This book just has a wealth of information and is the most comprehensive I've ever read. It's a true celebration of the Halloween season.

                                        Book Description

From the early 1960s through the early 70s, Pop Art swept the industrialized world. Iconoclastic, rebellious, and immediately popular, the new movement found its roots in an unprecedentedly prosperous consumer society. Encouraged by galleries and publishers who catered to a new collectors' market, many Pop artists were drawn to the creation of editions on paper and in multiples. 60 vibrant examples by such American icons as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and by such European artists as Richard Hamilton, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gerhard Richter, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Sigmar Polke, are organized according to the themes of mass media consumer culture, politics, erotica and more. All of the works included herein are from The Prints and Illustrated Books Collection at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, an exceptionally rich repository of such work.

This cataloge of the recent exhibition "Pop Impressions Europe/USA" at the Museum of Modern Art in NY, added immensely to to my understanding of the pop art movement. it makes it evident that pop was a global movement and not solely American. Also, the organization of the book is themeatic, with such catagories as "Mass Media" and "Erotica" helping to clarify the feeling of the time period. "Pop Impressions" is also lavishly illustrated with color reproductions (almost one on every page), a necessity with this art movement.

Quanah Parker (1850-1911) was among the last of the free-ranging Comanche warriors who once terrorized the high plains. Parker ascended to the rank of war chief through brave acts in almost constant warfare (Comanche is a Ute word that means "wants to fight me all the time") with Anglos and other Indian nations alike. But Parker was more than a warrior, Neeley observes. A great political leader, he negotiated a peace treaty with the United States that spared his people the indignities heaped on other nations that fought back. Parker and others among Neeley's cast of characters will be familiar to fans of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. Among them are such important figures as legendary rancher Charles Goodnight and Texas Ranger Sul Ross, once Parker's enemies, later his good friends.

                                        Book Description

Born in 1850, Quanah Parker belonged to the last generation of Comanches to follow the traditional nomadic life of their ancestors. After the Civil War, the trickle of white settlers encroaching on tribal land in northern Texas suddenly turned into a tidal wave. Within a few short years, the great buffalo herds, a source of food and clothing for the Indians from time immemorial, had been hunted to the verge of extinction in an orgy of greed and destruction. The Indians' cherished way of life was being stolen from them.

Quanah Parker was the fiercest and bravest of the Comanches who fought desperately to preserve their culture. He led his warriors on daring and bloody raids against the white settlers and hunters. He resisted to the last, heading a band of Comanches, the Quahadas, after the majority of the tribe had acquiesced to resettlement on a reservation. But even the Comanches—legendary horsemen of the Plains who had held off Spanish and Mexican expansion for two centuries—could not turn back the massive influx of people and weaponry from the East.

Faced with the bitter choice between extermination or compromise, Quanah stepped off the warpath and sat down at the bargaining table. With remarkable skill, the Comanche warrior adapted to the new challenges he faced, learning English and the art of diplomacy. Working to bridge two very different worlds, he fought endlessly to gain a better deal for his people. As the tribe's elder statesman, Quanah lobbied Congress in Washington, D.C., entertained President Teddy Roosevelt and other dignitaries at his home, invested in the railroad, and enjoyed the honor of having a Texas town named after him.

The Last Comanche Chief is a moving portrayal of this famed leader. His story is an inspiring and compelling chapter in the history of Native Americans and of the American West.

"Truly distinguished. Neeley re-creates the character and achievements of this most significant of all Comanche leaders." —Robert M. Utley, author of The Lance and the Shield: The Life and Times of Sitting Bull

"An important and probably definitive account of this tremendously significant figure in American history."—The Dallas Morning News

Written okay, but I mean REALLY! Why not saint the individual who is the subject of this book? Perhaps he could walk on water to among all of his other superhuman qualities???? If you take the time to read the reviews here - all by people who are wannabe Indians and/or haters of their own heritage and race - you'll get a very distorted view of what this book contains - which is a record of brutality, sadistic butchery, and mindless aggression against other peoples, until of course, elements such as the Texas Rangers took the starch out and fight out of said noble Red Aristocrat. It must be remembered that the Comanches slaughtered other Indian tribes without mercy ( almost exterminating many groups of the Apeches ) and ran a bustling slave trade in which they sold captives among themselves or to the Spanish. They also acted as mercinaries, accepting money from the Spanish to exterminate Apaches in the northern Provinces of Mexico ( on one year, the Comanches were paid 18,000.00 Pesos for Apache scalps - 6 Pesos per scalp! ). The Comanches were easily the most brutal and sadistic of all the Plains Tribes when it came to abuse, torture, and inhuman treatment of captives ( Red, White, or Mexican ). No, there is a LOT the reader should be aware of, but is carefully kept from by books like this one. Read on through this review of mine and learn!

This sort of quasi-sob story type of literature (proliferating these days) which deals with long-dead Amer-Indians and events of the past really are annoying. Much better books are Three Years Among the Comanches: The Narrative of Nelson Lee, the Texas Ranger and Nine Years Among the Indians, 1870-1879: The Story of the Captivity and Life of a Texan Among the Indians as well as Scalp Dance: Indian Warfare on the High Plains, 1865-1879 and lastly, Life Among the Apaches (Bison Book). And be sure not to miss The Kiowas (Civilization of the American Indian Series). Each of these books which I recommend is superb in its own way and for specific reasons, and all will serve to blast the reader straight out of the present Politically Correct SPELL of Fiction-As-Fact concerning the American Indians of the Western Frontier - a spell which has been cast by the likes of Dee Brown with his psuedo history-fantasy "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" and movies like "Dances With Wolves" ( or more appropriately, "DUNCES With Wolves").

Thanks to crack-brained leftist snivelers making one highly slanted documentary after another, and of course the hack writers who seek to twist historic record and fact to suite their own civilization-depreciating schemes, we are swamped with PC Sob Story works like this one that leave the uknowledgeable reader with a completely FALSE impression about what actually happened under the vast and lonely skies of the center of this continent only a few hundred years ago.

Considering this problem seriously; if you're interested in an ACCURATE perspective on the Wild Frontier, read the titles I've recommended for you here. And, if you're one of these well-programmed PC flunkies who thinks he or she "has it all figured out" when it comes to the poor, helpless, hounded Amer-Indians of yesteryear, then READ the titles I've recommended here too! I DARE YOU! Do this and THEN read this book and other trumped-up trash literature such as "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" and watch "Dunces With Wolves" and you'll see just how the wool's been pulled over your eyes!

Bill Neeley gives new life to the legend of Quanah Parker, Numu Paraiboo. More than just a biography, this book gives valuable insights into the culture and lifestyle of the Numunuu people and the training of the "Lords of the Plains", the best mounted cavalry in the world. Highly recommend for its accuracy and truth. Five stars

Neeley's saga depicts the life of the man who led the last free Comanche tribe from the Texas plains into the modern world. In one lifetime Quanah successfully bridged centuries and cultures. A chasm so vast that Quanah is the only native American Chief that truly made the transition. Son of a captive girl, Cynthia Ann Parker, and son of a Chief, Peta Nocona, Quanah is a man who is truly unique in every way. Neeley's account of this man is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Quanah Parker, American Hero.......2001-10-23

Bill Neeley is to be commended for a fine and well documented historical work which reads as good as a Larry McMurtry novel. No finer cast of characters could be invented than those very real people who populated Quanah Parker's world of the Texas Panhandle at the end of the 19th century. Definitely a book for those who prefer there history as it really happened. Not glossed over or compared only to the way it fits into someone's idea of what constitutes the historical "big picture". Must reading for those interested in the history of the plains Indians and real life cowboys, frontiers-folk and Texas lore. Sired by the great Commanche war chief Nocona on Cynthia Ann Parker, a young Texan captive taken in a raid on her father's ranch, Quanah Parker was the last and probably the finest example of a Commanche warrior. Although they never numbered more than 3,000 to 5,000 warriors, the Commanche stood astride the southern gateway to the west and single handedly stopped the southwestern expansion of America for 100 years. The reason Lewis and Clark were sent north to find a route to the west coast around them. So hated by the Texans that the Texas Rangers were created with the sole purpose of annihilating them. The Commanches preyed on Texan settlers along the frontier for both livelihood and sport. Quanah Parker was the last man standing. The last of the plains Indians to surrender to the US Cavalry. Never defeated in battle. Quanah led a tired band of warriors to Ft. Sill Oklahoma, gave up the fight and became a legend in his own time. Neely tells the story well, no unnecessary sentiment, no moral judgement. Just a man and his times as recounted by him in old age, his friends, his enemies and the newspapers of the day. Great fodder for a movie, the life of Quanah Parker. A genuine American hero, although I am not sure he would consider that a complement.

Our classroom read a poignant short story about his mother, Cynthia Ann Parker. I was pleased to find this book on the life of her son in this carefully researched, well-presented biography. It is an interesting read of a man and also a chief showing how he is torn between two worlds of belief and behaviors. Informative read. It received the Oklahoma History Book of the Year award.

This past summer, I made a trip to the reconstruction of Old Fort Parker in Groesbeck, TX - and the actual massacre site - where Cynthia Ann Parker, age 9, was captured by Comanche warriors and raised as a Comanche woman for the next 25 years before a well-meaning Texas Ranger discovered her and returned her to her white relatives. Cynthia Ann never readjusted to white society and, in mourning for her Comanche husband and her children, eventually starved herself to death. Yet, out of this tragic story, her son Quanah - half white, half Comanche - rose to become the most influential representative of the Comanche tribe and the last Comanche Chief.

In this book, author William T. Hagan presents the meticulously researched story of Quanah's life and the politics of both the white and native worlds which he straddled, serving as an eloquent bridge between two societies struggling for survival on the Oklahoma and Texas plains. An astute businessman, Quanah recognized the futility of staving off white settlement and turned his warrior energies toward negotiating for the best "deals" he could get for the American Indians. Although he made many trips to Washington, DC and the White House to represent the needs of the Indians and often wore western Anglo dress, he refused to give up his braids, his "much married condition" (7 wives), and his dedication to the peyote cult.

This is a fascinating book which I highly recommend to any afficianado of the Old West and Native America.

Although I tend to be wary of any biographies that speak with an omnisient narrative voice, and don't cite their sources as they go, Hagan's book does well remaining mostly unbiased in discussing native-white relations, and stating facts. It has an excellent collection of pictures I haven't seen elsewhere, and gives a well-written account of Quanah Parker's life without 'juicing it up'. Being a descendent of Quanah Parker, I've read anything about him I can get my hands on, and this is definitely one of the better resources.

Quanah Parker led a life that no novelist could ever haveinvented. His mother,Cynthia Ann Parker, was only nine when a Comanchewar party swept down on her family's frontier farm, killed her parents and grandparents before her eyes, and carried her off into captivity. By the time she was grown, she had become a Comanche herself and married a leading warrior. Their firstborn son was named Quanah, and he would lead his people during the greatest upheaval they would ever experience.

Marrin does an absolutely brilliant job of bringing this violent, critical period to life for young readers. He describes the Native lifestyle accurately but objectively, without romanticizing it through the distorted lens of political correctness. He describes the Indian atrocities and the "tornado of hatred" they inspired among the whites. He states correctly that 19th century Indian boys were "born to kill" and then portrays the teenage Texas Rangers who were, in many ways, the mirror image of the young warriors they opposed. We learn about Quanah's role as a leader in the war for Texas, and when that war was finally lost, about his equally impressive role guiding his people through the difficult transitions that followed.

I have studied the Indian wars for more than 30 years, and Marrin's book has left me in awe. I did not think it was possible for history to be written this well! If you are over 12 years old, you have to read it! END
