Book Description

Second in the delightful new Scumble River mystery series... When school pyschologist Skye Denison's beloved grandma is found dead in her bed, an autopsy proves it was murder. And Skye is determined to find out whodunit, even if the answer lies in the rotten roots of her own family tree.

4 out of 5 stars Skeletons in the family closet.......2004-12-24

Skye Denison enjoys her daily visits to her grandmother to hear stories of her family's history. On one of her visits she is horrified to find that her grandmother has died. She calls the local coronor, Simon, whom she is dating, much to the disgust of her family, who like to keep family business private. Soon she finds herself investigating her kin and alienating many of them in the process. If this isn't enough, she is in trouble with her school district's superintendant who wants her to falsify her school psychologist's records in order to please an influential parent. A third complication is her love life which now includes two men who vie for her affection. Having been a school employee with a job similar to Skye's, I recognize the problems she encounters with parents and administrators. My only objection to Skye's behavior is that she seems to think nothing of being late for school or trying to take last-minute personal days when she has other things to do. Most school employees are very conscientious about their attendance. This book is the second in the series and shows good progress in plot and character development. All in all, it's an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Riveting.......2004-03-17

I just love Skye Denison, Denise Swanson's amateur sleuth. She's a school psychologist who has to battle parents who can't wrap their flaccid minds around the fact that perhaps their little Betty or Reginald isn't as perfect as paradise. With these little battles to...well, battle, the last thing poor Skye needs is someone to murder her beloved grandmother, Antonia Leofanti. But someone has. Sky finds her grandma dead as the proverbial doornail in the poor old lady's bedroom, with the covers pulled up over her head, only a cloud of wispy gray hair peeking over the top. Later on the same day, or perhaps the next day, Antonia's maid and caregiver, Mrs. Jankowski is found in an abandoned well or some such, along with a half a pan of poisoned brownies jammed in beside her. As if all this isn't enough, Skye is almost positive that the person(s) who murdered her grandma and Mrs. J is a person in her family. This is a fun, fast mystery that I had a terrible time putting down.

5 out of 5 stars Down-home Murder Mystery.......2003-09-10

This was my first time reading one of Denise Swanson's books and I will definitely read the rest of the Skye Denison series. From the very first chapter, I was hooked on the small town flavor of the book. Ms. Swanson's writing style takes the reader through twists and turns that entice the mystery connoisseur. Perfect light reading for a vacation.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2003-07-16

I thought this book was good, but I didn't really get into the storyline that much. The idea of her grandmother being murdered by a family member is a very good one, but Ms. Swanson didn't really live up to my hopes. This book could have been much better handled with the idea, and the fact that someone from the family was the responsible for the murder was an interesting one.

So far, of the three books that I've read in this series, the first one is still my favorite (Murder of a Small-Town Honey). I hope that the fourth book (Murder of a Snake in the Grass) becomes my new favorite once I find time to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Small-Town Cozy!.......2003-07-12

In the 2nd book in the Scumble River mystery series, we see amateur sleuth, Skye Denison working hard at fitting into her hometown and finishing up the school year. Skye is a school psychologist, returning home to live and work after humiliating herself while delivering a valedictorian speech 12 years prior. It seems that Skye left with a chip on her shoulder about "the small minds of those in a small town" and has to return home with her tail tucked firmly between her legs after losing her last job. Since she left her last job in disgrace (although it was not her fault), the only job she can get is in the school system that she shunned when she left town. While trying to re-establish herself in her hometown, she helped to solve a previous case that cleared her brother of murder.

In this case, Skye has been spending a lot of time with her grandmother to re-establish broken ties and to learn more about family history. When her grandmother dies suddenly after being given a clean bill of health from her doctor, Skye gets suspicious. And when she learns that her grandmother's caretaker has vanished, family members start to hypothesize that she murdered the grandmother. While suspecting everyone (including her own family members) Skye determines that she will ferret out some old family secrets and in doing so will prove who killed her grandmother. Add to this that Skye is having difficulties with some students at school, and you have an interesting, engaging cozy mystery!

I enjoyed this book much more than I had the first book in this series. I felt that the first book was valuable for its character development but did not offer as much of an interesting read as this one did. I like the characters in Scumble River, and enjoyed all of the relationships between family members as described in this book. I also enjoyed the fact that Skye faced a huge ethical dilemma, and it was interesting to see how she would handle this situation. If you like cozy mysteries involving small towns, give this series a try.

The first book in the series is "Murder of a Small Town Honey". Enjoy!

      "

The Age of Man has begun. Gone are the elves and dwarves, orcs and trolls, and other creatures of legend. Having driven the ""undesirables"" from their lands, the kingdoms of the island continent of Pentania have started a new chapter in human history. The gods are a myth, magic is a forsaken art, and the avatars, shepherds of the races, have faded into the mists of time. Now, mankind will rule. But they are not alone.

When the king of Alson is assassinated and the capital besieged by a nefarious wizard, even the remote village of Diln is not immune from the chaos and terror that sweep the realm. Torn from his home, young Jarom begins a dangerous journey to ask for aid against the implacable usurper.

But soon the machinations of a mysterious council lead Jarom to a seemingly preordained quest: to find one of the mythical Swords of Asahiel, the divine talismans used by the elven avatars in the forging of the earth itself. He must do so not only to establish himself as a leader for his people, but to help save a fledgling, quarrelsome mankind. For the Demon Queen Spithaera has awakened from the Abyss, and humanity is about to learn how very powerless it can be against the ancient terrors of the world.

And whether real or imagined, destiny is not so easily claimed.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting High Fantasy.......2007-09-11

When the king is assassinated and the city conquered by an unknown army commanded by a wizard, all hope seems to fall on a young man named Jarom. With the help of his friend, Jarom goes in search of the legendary Crimson Sword, believing the magical sword will help in his quest to usurp the evil wizard. But there are many other forces at work, with their own plans for Jarom and the sword.

In typical high fantasy tradition, The Crimson Sword contains dragons, wizards, demons, and other unique creatures. But the strength of this novel lies in the twists and surprises in the story. And with plenty of action and violence, we're never sure who may live and who will die. The antagonists are ruthless killers, but the good guys aren't without their own arsenal of skilled combatants.

There were a few unique characters that I really enjoyed. But this novel is definitely driven by the action and exciting storyline. This was an impressive debut from a young author. I'll definitely be seeking out the sequels: The Obsidian Key and The Divine Talisman, which is supposed to be released next year.

1 out of 5 stars Eldon, get a new editor!.......2007-08-24

Basically, I agree with the comments of earlier reviews. This is not a good book. It is formulaic, cliched, and has nothing to say. Worse, it has all these faults spread over 712 pages, a very great deal of which should have been cut out from the endless pages of needless descriptions and pointless dialogue

I read a lot of fantasy, much of it poor. Mr. Thompson seems like a writer whose editor needs to be given a stern talking-to about permitting a reasonably good new writer to clutter up a decent plot and unobjectionable characters with simply acres and acres of useless baggage. I usually love long books. I couldn't wait for this one to end. Literally. I quit on page 576. Did I miss the good stuff?

      1 out of 5 stars I wish i had my money back........2007-08-21

Sadly i bought both book one and book 2 of this series at the same time. I have never bailed out of a book before so this is the first, i stuck with it through page 500 but i will not continue. I have wasted time reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad book, but not great.......2007-03-09

I would have to give this book 4 stars only because it wasn't that it was a bad read, it just wasn't original. The main character Jarom aka torin is the long lost prince, (been there done that, several times). He sets off on a quest and seems to make the same mistakes over and over and over again. But winds up commanding armies, even though he has no clue how. I just couldn't warm up to this character, the other two characters Kylac and Allion I liked, Kylac though was also a bit obscure. 16 years old and the worlds best swordsman, come one. I am now reading the 2nd book and its a harder read, because once again, Torin keeps making the same mistakes he made in the first book. Screw up, get caught, make a mircalous escape. He doesn't trust other characters that are helping him and then trust a total stranger and winds up in trouble.
Like I said, it wasn't a bad book, but everything had been done before, over and over again and the main character just wasn't my idea of a main hero.

      4 out of 5 stars Thompson's First.......2007-02-15

This was Eldon Thompson's first novel. For a first novel it deserves four stars. His characters, well most of them, were enjoyable and developed pretty steadily throughout the course of the novel. I wish I could have learned more about Kylac and Soric, maybe they'll be elaborated on in the second novel. If you're a seasoned fantasy reader, you probably won't enjoy this book much. It does have a lot of cliche themes. But, most novels are cliche in some way so I could look past it. If you're just beginning to read fantasy, you'll probably find this book enjoyable. But, at a deceptively 537 pages, I don't reccommend it as a weekend read unless you are really bored.

        Book Description

Foreword by Jack Canfield: I have been hearing wonderful things about the Sedona Method® from clients and friends for about 20 years. Recently, I finally took the course with my wife and my 12-year-old son. I've been amazed at the simplicity of the Method and the powerful impact it has had on my life. Through my work with Chicken Soup for the Soul and through Self-Esteem Seminars, I have been exposed to many self-improvement techniques and processes. This one stands head and shoulders above the rest for the ease of its use, its profound impact and the speed it produces results. The Sedona Method is a vastly accelerated way of letting go of feelings like anger, frustration, jealousy, anxiety, stress and fear as well as many other problems—even physical pain—with which almost everybody struggles at one time or another.

One of the wonderful byproducts of taking the seminar is that I have become friends with Hale Dwoskin. He is one of the calmest, clearest, most joy-filled people I have ever met, living proof that the Sedona Method works wonders. I am ecstatic about our friendship. During the seminar, I found myself constantly in awe of Hale's brilliant teaching style. I experienced one breakthrough after another. As a result, I've already referred many family members, friends, and business associates to the Sedona Method seminars, and I've also had the entire staff at Chicken Soup for the Soul Enterprises learn the Method through the audio programs that Hale put together.

Now I am thoroughly delighted to be able to recommend The Sedona Method: Your Key to Lasting Happiness, Success, Peace, and Well-being. Reading this book is the equivalent of taking the Sedona Method Basic Course and several Advanced Courses rolled together. Filled with practical techniques and enlightening true stories, Hale clearly and generously explains everything we need to know to master the releasing process and to continue using the Method day by day, moment by moment in real life situations, such as having more fulfilling and harmonious relationships, building financial security, developing satisfying careers, breaking nasty habits, losing weight, and enjoying good health. He reveals the Sedona Method's powerful secret for manifesting what you want in your life, while showing you how to be at ease and comfortable with what you already have. The Method also enables you how to have greater ease, enjoyment and peace of mind with all that you experience on a daily basis.

So I highly encourage you to read The Sedona Method with an open mind and heart. Please allow the simplicity of its message and the power of this process to open you to all the wonders that life has to offer. It is one of those rare things in today's world that delivers more than it promises... way more. I urge you to pay close attention to Hale's message in this book. If you do, it will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for new window in my life.......2007-09-23

There's so much to say about this book, but I keep coming back to one thought: This book helped me learn to get my life back.

The sections on fear, guilt, addiction, trauma were so powerful for me that I would have driven to California and picked this book up from Jeff Bezos himself, had I known what was in store.

Most times you read a book thinking, "Ok, fix me." This approach is simple and effective and the best part, it was different than any self-help -- no shoulds/should-nots, just simple advice and simple practices to help you fix yourself in a way that allows you to be as you are during the entire process -- a welcome change.

5 out of 5 stars Let go of your past!.......2007-09-21

Whereas The Secret and/or The Law of Attraction are now and the future, manifestation and the power of positive thinking, The Sedona Method is now and the past. It explains how to let go of whatever internal thoughts you may have that may be keeping you down, emotionally, professionally - any way. Letting go of it, and being freed. Truly liberating and recommended for everyone! Great replacement for therapy and it costs a LOT less!

5 out of 5 stars Release Anger and Fear.......2007-09-08

In this book are several methods for accessing the origins of our fears and releasing them for good. I've been using their suggestions and I find that I'm relieved of emotions I've carried with me all my life.

        1 out of 5 stars Completly Incomprehensible.......2007-08-07

Without question, this is the single worst book in the self-help genre I've ever seen. Completely incomprehensible, irritating and frustrating. While many books of this type don't really deliver on their promises, this is the only one I've ever read that will make you feel WORSE! Dwoskin repeats over and over and over that "releasing" (which he never really explains how to do) is "simple" and "natural" and "easy" and you'll get results "immediately". So, of course when there are no results you start to think that you're some kind of sociopathic freak because you don't "get it". If you're depressed, this book will make you suicidal; if you're angry, it'll make you homicidal. And please do NOT waste the $200 on the CD's just to listen to this guy read the book to you. You'll wind up throwing the whole mess in the dumpster and wishing you had your money back.

5 out of 5 stars Best approach to stress relief available.......2007-07-20

This was the first book I have ever read with real life techniques to apply to your daily living and get rid of stress. Not just go to the gym, take a break from work etc. He takes stress and deals with it in such a logical way - I have been able to put the stress in a basket and close the lid since I read this book. I still get situations where I can do better but it is a learning curve and I gave this book to my daughter's teenage friend who is already 3/4 way through it and it is a huge help for her. It is practical and helps you create situations and deal with them one by one. Once you learn the technique it will just take a bit of time to perfect it but you HAVE to start...

The Spice Box can be used as a concise, informative introduction to the many spiced adventures of varied East Indian vegetarian cuisine. The Introduction contains definitions of Curries and Dals as well as descriptions of many of the most popular spices, in addition to mixtures of spices, such as garam masala, and basic procedures, such as roasting cumin seeds, grinding dals or spices, or breaking open a coconut. The Indian name for each ingredient or dish is always given after the English in parentheses, a practice to encourage the uninitiated.

Chapters are offered on Appetizers and Snacks, Soups, Vegetables, Dals, Egg Dishes, Rice Dishes, Indian Breads, Yogurt Salads (Raitas), Fresh Chutneys, Pickles, Indian Sweets, and the Finale, which is paan, or a betel nut spiced sweet wrapped in betel leaf. Classic curry recipes abound, including Pumpkin Curry, Tomato Curry, Turnip Koftas Curry, Mashed Zucchini Curry, Chickpea Flour Curry, and Pink Lentil Curry. The chapter on breads also contains many classic Indian bread recipes, including Raised Bread (Naan), Chappatis or Roti, Paranthas, Puri, and Fried Bread, or Bhatura.

The Yogurt Salads suggested provide a cooling note to the spicy curries and vegetable main dishes, and the Pickles and Chutneys add further authentic flair to the Indian feast. If the reader prefers, the Introduction contains a list of sources or places to buy Indian foods in the United States organized by region. But it is also incredibly fascinating to see the list of spices that go into a coconut chutney or a sweet mango pickle, for example. The Desserts chapter includes Rose Syrup Milk Balls (Gulab Jamun), Sugar-Coated Cookies (Sakkaarpara), and many wonderful vegetable puddings.

In all, The Spice Box packs a lot of stimulus into a slender package. It's appeal rests not only in its authenticity, but also in its accessibility. It is surely a classic.

5 out of 5 stars How absolutely yummy!.......2001-10-25

This is by far the best Indian cookery book I have ever come across. It is a pleasure to use - I am delighted by it. The recipes are easy to follow and only require easily found ingredients. Everytime I cook from it my husband says "I feel like we've just eaten at a restaurant" we are so impressed! There is plenty for the vegan too.

Our favourites so far are the Whole Eggplant Curry (page 75), Hyderabadi Chili Curry (page 69) and the Pink Lentil Curry (page 112). There are so many wonders awaiting us - we haven't even tried any of the soups or apetizers yet.

My only criticism is the lack of photographs - it is nice to see photographs for reassurance if nothing else!

If you like delicious, authentic Indian food you'll love these recipes!

          5 out of 5 stars great cookbook!.......2001-10-03

Definitely a great cookbook to have. The recipes are quite tasty and very straightforward. The book has the following chapters: appetizers, soups (great ones!!), vegetables, dals, egg dishes, rice dishes, breads, yogurt salads, chutneys, pickles, sweets. I was glad to see the mulligatawny soup since that can be a tricky recipe to find a good one and this one is. There are also some really great eggplant dishes like the whole eggplant curry that has peanuts, tomatoes and coconut in it. yum. Glad I bought this book!

            Book Description

Rubber toy vehicles seemed to suddenly appear on the scene in dimestores in 1935 and almost as suddenly disappear in 1955, when American-made plastic toys became much more affordable. These fascinating rubber toys were produced by major companies Auburn Rubber Company and Sun Rubber Company, as well as smaller companies like the Judy Company, Gift Craft, Glolite, Viceroy, and Rubber Toys Unique. Author Dave Leopard, long-time collector of American-made toy cars and trucks who specializes in rubber toy vehicles, began researching this subject in 1987 and continues to obtain new items and information, which he has included in this collector's guide. Leopard presents a history of rubber toys and describes the American dimestore where these toys were first available. He points out model differences and uses a numbering system to identify the vehicles in the book. The Auburn and Sun Rubber Companies have complete reviews, and pre-war American manufacturers as well as toys produced overseas are given coverage. There are also original catalog pages from Auburn and Sun, and a complete list of rubber toys featured in the book by manufacturer and type. Current collector values are given for each item featured. 'Burn some rubber' on your way to the bookstore to get your copy of Rubber Toy Vehicles. AUTHORBIO: David M. Leopard, a retired Air Force colonel, is an avid collector of older, small scale, American-made toy cars and trucks. His special areas of expertise, other than rubber toy vehicles, are the older plastic toys, slushcast toys, and the more obscure diecast makes. Hi monthly column, Little Wheels, appeared in U.S. Toy Collector magazine for almost 10 years. REVIEW: This book is the first ever to be published on the subject, and highlights toy companies long forgotten by many, but whose toy vehicles are treasured by many. The Sun Rubber Company, Auburn Company, Glolite, Viceroy, and others are featured.

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past!.......2007-09-11

While not a toy collector, I was interested in refreshing my memory in search of toys from my youth. This book certainly was a blast from the past and an enjoyable read/flip through. Undoubtedly Leopard is the expert on the subject. There were some fantastic ancient photographs of the toys actually being made, as well as some super original advertisements. The brief history of the companies was interesting and useful, though centered more on Auburn, but that is probably the company most collectors will be interested in. I've had trouble in more exact dating of these toys, and while the book did have some pieces dated, and did offer an overview of dating of rubber toys (Auburn in particular), I wish there had been more. The book is about rubber toys, which were phased out in the 1950's. In auctions I find that dealers mingle the words rubber and plastic freely, so I would have liked to have seen a few plastic Auburn toys just to help with the dating. Never-the-less, it is ground breaking and the best book that I have found on the subject. I would love to see another book by the author take up where the rubber toys left off.

                Book Description

On his death, Felix Jacoby left uncompleted the original plan for his massive and now standard compilation: Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker. Not only was he unable to complete his commentary to Volume III C, but no parts of three whole sections foreseen in the original plan were ever published. Jacoby did however leave behind a considerable Nachlass of more than 1200 pages of notes and outlines relating to his commentary to FGrHist Volume III C. Charles Fornara is undertaking the task of publishing in fascicles Jacoby's text (sometimes with minor modifications), making additions of his own (between brackets). In writing this commentary Professor Fornara has tried to follow the stylistic conventions which Jacoby preferred and has done his best to emulate his general approach. This first part of the work deals with Graeco-Egyptian sources (Nos. 608a-665). Once this is completed, Professor Fornara will write a general introduction to the Graeco-Egyptian segment, including part of what Jacoby had written. It is anticipated that the work will comprise 8 fascicles and will be completed before 2005. An international venture is now also underway to prepare and publish two of the sections which Jacoby had planned but never managed to publish. Part IV (Biography, history of literature and antiquarian literature) will be undertaken by a team including J. Bollansee (Leuven), K. Brodersen (Muenchen), J. Engels (Cologne), A. Henrichs (Cambridge, Mass.), E. Krummen (Zuerich), G.A. Lehmann (Goettingen), H.-G. Nesselrath (Bern), J. Radicke (Koeln), J. Raeymaekers (Leuven), G. Schepens (Leuven), and E. Schuetrumpf (Boulder, Colorado). The first fascicles can be expected in the course of 1999. Part V (historical geography) is to be coordinated by a working group of the Ernst-Kirsten-Gesellschaft, comprising H.-J. Gehrke (Freiburg) as spokesperson, with P. Funke (Muenster), E. Olshausen (Stuttgart), F. Prontera (Perugia). Furthermore a group working under Prof. G. Schepens (Leuven) has undertaken to prepare a full index to the existing volumes of FGrH. This will be ready at the end of the 1990s. The work will be published in fascicles in a temporary paper binding. A cloth binding will be made available with the last fascicle. This is an excellent book. It details not only Mr. Gray's life, it also speaks about the struggle of an entire nation of people. I recommend this book to any and everyone who would like to have more information about the struggle of black people for their basic rights,ie to seat any where they please on a public bus, to vote, to an adequate education in your own state. I enjoyed the book immensely. I will continue to use it as a reference.

Fred Gray grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and had to leave the state to finish his education because blacks could not then attend Alabama law schools. He returned to his hometown in 1954 and became one of two black lawyers in the city. He was, he writes, "determined to destroy everything segregated that I could find." He did not have to wait long. When his friend Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for violating the segregated seating ordinance on a Montgomery bus, 26-year-old Martin Luther King, Jr., was chosen to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and 24-year-old Fred Gray became his—and the movement's—lawyer. Gray's legal victory in the federal courts ended the boycott 381 days later. Over the four decades since, Gray has won scores of civil rights cases in education, voting rights, transportation, health, and other areas. He represented the Freedom Riders, the Selma-to-Montgomery marchers, the victims of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and many more. Bus Ride to Justice is the exciting story of a courageous life in the courtrooms of America and in the pulpits of churches where Fred Gray began as a child preacher and continues today, and of a strong human being filled with love and admiration for his fellow man.

Fred Gray isn't just a Civil Rights Lawyer, he's THE Civil Rights lawyer. This man represented Rosa Parks in the Bus Boycott, MLK Jr in the Selma March, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and desegregation lawsuits for Alabama public schools. In a world where the word 'lawyer' holds a negative connotation, Fred Gray's story is about what a lawyer ought to be doing. This isn't the movie of the week, it's the real thing by the man who did it.
