Book Description
Amos Walker, the quintessential hardboiled detective, is mortal after all. Jeff Starzek, an old friend who smuggles cigarettes for a living, saved Amos Walkers life, bringing him to a hospital after Walker took a bullet to the leg. A month later, Walker, still convalescing, gets a panicked phone call from Starzeks sister. Jeff is missing and the leads are few. One lead is Homeland Security agent H. Clemson. The Fed also seeks Starzek, whom he believes may be working for a counterfeiting operation with ties to terrorists. Though Walker doubts Starzek is a terrorist, he finds blank treasury paper at an evangelical church belonging to Starzeks brother. Then Starzeks brother disappears too. Back to square one, Walker follows his best hunch, driving Starzeks usual cigarette route along the Lake Huron shore, and finally gets a solid lead on the paper hangers. But before Walker can break the case, someone tries to shoot himand hes accused of murder. In the end, Walker will need all of his fortitude to stay alive long enough to figure out whos doing what to whom, in time to save his friends life.

Smile if your from Detroit.......2007-01-30
The Author sure knows Detroit and he seems to have researched the Thumb of Michigan well also. Having been brought up in Detroit and now retired in the Thumb I watch closely and he never misses a lick. Amos Walker seems to be a Mickey Spilane type of character with a little more added, I have read a few of his other novels and always enjoyed them. I did like the twist of homeland security in this one. All in all a great novel.
Walker will remind you of Travis McGee.......2006-07-13
NICOTINE KISS is one of those mysteries where the lead character, Amos Walker in this case, is much more interesting than the plot. I have read only one other Amos Walker mystery, but so far he reminds me a great deal of Travis McGee. There's the wise guy repartee, the self-deprecating humor, and the penchant for getting beat up or shot. Walker is shot at least twice in NICOTINE KISS, and he's gimpy for most of it.
The second thing that I found impressive was the honor among thieves theme. Jeff Starzek, a cigarette smuggler, saves Walker's life, after Walker is shot the first time. Because of this Walker refuses to believe a Homeland Security agent when he accuses Swarzek of counterfeiting. Swarzek's adoptive sister hires Walker to find him when Swarzek goes missing. In the process we learn that Michigan has more coastline than California.
There's also lots of atmosphere in NICOTINE KISS. Estleman uses cold weather to good effect. Of course, Walker is never properly dressed for sub-zero weather. Starzek and Walker also drive souped-up cars, Walker a Cutless with a 455 engine, Starzek a Hurst Olds. At one point Starzek says it's not the money in reference to his smuggling, it's the driving. He's a modern moon-shine runner. Starzek also plays the piano, everything from Rachmaninoff to jazz, when he's not running from Homeland Security and other coppers.
Here's the kind of insouciance you get from Walker. As he's tracking Swarzek, he stops at a sort of truck stop/ bar called the Air Horn. The denizens are watching televison. "A row of exposed butt cracks seated at the bar were watching DEUL on video and rooting for the truck." You get this kind of irreverence on every other page.
There's a blurb on the back cover from the great John D. MacDonald: "A gem. Estleman goes on the very short list of the peer group I can read for pleasure." This was for SUGARTOWN, a previous Walker mystery. I'll be ordering that one soon.
Writing quite obviously crafted by a master.......2006-07-05
Amos Walker, Detroit PI, has a moral compass. His life was saved by a hunted man, Jeff, who acted at the risk of his own freedom, possibly his life. He acquires a client who gives him the excuse he needs to find Jeff (who has disappeared) and to save his life if given the opportunity. Jeff's sister knows that he runs contraband cigarettes. Like Walker, Jeff lives a dangerous life and is very good at it. (While writing this, the Robert Mitchum movie "Thunder Road" came to mind -- I'm a visual person.)
Like the many other books in this series that Estleman has written, Walker is hard-boiled, using his wits to painstakingly solve the mystery. When he bets his life on his gun, he usually wins the fight. --A prolific writer and prize-winning author, Estleman writes more PI novels set in Michigan than any other author I know. (Jon Jackson and Elmore Leonard deliver abundant reader satisfaction as well.) I value that, having grown up in southeastern Michigan in the 50s. Nicotine Kiss is an excellent read. The fact that he uses cars almost as characters earned him an A+ from me.
NICOTINE KISS.......2006-06-12
I read all of the Amos Walkers books by Loren Estleman and I have never been disappointed. Thou Amos is aging, ( and he should be) the character is still fresh. Estleman is an author I eagerly wait for the new book. Also read his wife D. Morgan
a reliable old friend in a contemporary world.......2006-04-13
4.5 out of 5 stars, actually. I have been a fan of Amos Walker and Loren D. Estleman since the first Amos Walker mystery, Motor City Blue, way back in 1981. I have faithfully read all the Walker books and always read the new one as soon as it is available; Walker and Estleman are that good and engender that type of loyalty. The books never disappoint, are always entertaining, and continually breathe new life into the first-person narrated, private eye story as popularized by Raymond Chandler; Nicotine Kiss is no different. All the classic professional Estleman touches are here: great dialogue, witty observations/similes/metaphors, and action sequences that are as breathless as they are well-written. My only quibble is that Estleman seems to be straining just a little more than usual to put Walker in a contemporary world: references such as Ben Affleck, Harry Potter, the internet, and the plot device of Homeland Security are overly plentiful compared to previous Walker novels. Nevertheless, Walker and Estleman are always welcome friends in my library. If you are a fan of Walker, the p.i. mystery in general, Raymond Chandler, or classic hardboiled writing, this book is for you.

Customer Reviews:
Dance of the Rings.......2007-10-04
I'm mid-way through the third book (Ring of Destiny) for the second reading of the series. I am entranced. I love Jane Fancher's in-depth character development, the storylines, the way she deals with Dancer and the androgynous/female/male characters. I read a lot and have rarely found myself feeling so "invested" as I do with her characters.
The whole series is definitely worth the reading time. Now, where IS the fourth book - Ring of Change?
Talk, talk, talk....is this Asimov come back to life?.......2001-10-23
No, I take that back - Asimov's discussions at least deal with interesting subject matter. This book doesn't even do that; all it has to offer is page after page of small talk - and if you go to lots of parties or other social gatherings you know how boring that gets.
Which is really a pity, because the first two books in Fancher's series were quite intriguing. But in this, the third book, the bottom just drops out of the story. In fact, there is no story.
There's supposed to be a fourth book, and I might buy that to see if Fancher can come back from this debacle.
Wonderful.......2001-06-19
I highly recommend reading this series, especially if you like character driven stories that are angsty and kind of dark.
I don't know what more to say without ruining the story, except I would have liked more graphic details of Mikhyel's childhood but I thought Mrs. Fancher did a wonderful job at slowly reveling pieces of Mikhyel's past.
Just read the books and judge for yourself. ^_^
The longer, the better.......2001-02-13
Ms. Fancher's book, "Ring of Destiny", is superb. Some who have reviewed the book have been concerned about the length. This I do not understand. What is the hurry? Is it a race? In the case of a book as good as this, the only draw back is that it has to end at all. In fact, you are fortunate because (if you haven't already) you can buy the entire triology and read from one book right into the next, without stopping. I recommend it. The complexity and growth of her characters, like the development of her plot, unfolds with majestic beauty. I've read a lot books, cotton candy books that can be devoured in a single sitting; Ms. Fancher's books are much more. They are a full-course, gourmet meal that leaves a lasting satisfaction.
A satisfying conclusion to an original fantasy!.......2000-09-29
The originality of the world Jane S. Fancher has created for this series alone would make it stand out, but most remarkable are the deep characterizations and the masterful pacing she provides to tell the story of the Brothers Rhomandi. I loved this series! The brothers are so real, and their relationships with each other so complex, and little is what it seems -- there's a surprise around every turn - right to the last.
Ring of Destiny wraps up this complex and engaging story in a satisfying way, tying up the many threads introduced in the first two books (including a few I didn't realize were threads when I first read them.)
I won't give details, because much of the enjoyment of this story comes from the surprise of discovery.
Start with Ring of Lightning, and then read Ring of Intrigue if you haven't. This book could possibly stand alone, but you'd be missing a heck of a lot of wonderful storytelling!

Dangerous misinformation but some good stuff, too.......2005-10-24
This book contains some dangerous misinformation, the worst being the author's recommendation to make wine in a plastic trash barrel. Non-food-grade plastic such as a trash can contains many toxic substances that can (and will) leach into food. I would imagine wine would be especially susceptible to picking up toxic heavy metals from the plastic. You MUST use ONLY FOOD GRADE PLASTIC CONTAINERS from a source such as a winemaking supply house to make wine...glass or ceramic would work as well (also assuming the glaze in the ceramic contained no lead and that the glass were unleaded!!!) I believe there was another significant error in the book but I cannot recall it now to report it to buyers.
The upside of this book is that the author takes a very casual approach to arts that are sometimes daunting to the novice, making the reader feel that s/he, too, can perform the craft. The downside is that the author takes a very casual approach to these arts and does not perhaps research them fully, as witness above. Also, the chapter on bread is a loss to anyone who owns a cookbook, as are many of the recipes throughout. Take this author with a grain of salt and double-check her methods before pursuing if you are unsure.
Fun and Interesting.......2003-05-09
It's full of little things you an add to your kitchen to bring a hardy feel to cooking and your home. Excellent for the country cook or city-dweller who needs to connect to European culinary roots. Some things are so easy, children can do them. Others (like the section on bread making) require a little more. Overall it's worth it.
Interesting book, but the bread chapter is very weak.......2001-11-21
This book is layed out as a series of chapters on particular topics such as making wine, vinegar, goat cheese, curing olives, making bread, etc. These chapters are then arranged as a description, with narrative, of how to make the food followed by recipes that *use the food*. So, for example, there is a chapter on making vinegar that can be summed up by: take old wine, get a mother of vinegar, let it hang out until done, (which is described) and bottle it. (with a little explanation of why you bottle). The recipes for the vinegar section then have various dressings that use vinegar.
This highlights a couple of things. First, that these foods are *simple* to make. There's nothing deep or complex about them. The foods will make themselves, if you just give a little support.
However, when I turn to the bread chapter, I am startled. The bread described uses commercial yeast, except for a very misleading section on sourdough. First, I would have thought that *this* book would emphasize sourdough bread which is easier, more fun, more tasty and, indeed, an increasingly "lost art".
I also would have thought that there would be a section on traditional preserving techniques, along the lines of the book "Keeping Foods Fresh" by Claude Aubert. The fact that it isn't highlights, I suspect, another underlying issue with the book. The imagined "good food" is western Mediterranean in origin. And the closer the better. It would have been interesting to consider some of the wonderful techniques used in Greece or Yugoslavia. That would get a range of fascinating things like pickled capers, cabbage and grape leaves, which would be very compatible with the spirit of the book and would have made a much more fascinating range.
Culinary euphoria.......2001-10-16
A friend passed this book along to me in the Peace Corps, and it consumed me until I had consumed the delights described inside. I am buying a copy of the revised edition for a dear friend's birthday. The vinegar (made from left-over dinner party wine) is the best I have had. The satisfaction that comes from kneading and baking your own bread (and the subsequent homemade french toast and croutons) is worth the Sunday afternoon. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-to-it! kind of book that will illuminate and enrich your culinary life. Off to make cheese...
A Pleasant Read.......2000-06-15
I bought this book for the goat cheese recipes, and I was very happy with the rest of the content. I doubt that I will cure my own olives any time soon, or make vinegar, but the information is useful and the author's enthusiasm is pleasant. If you enjoy Greek cooking, you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy the homey delights of doing for yourself, you will enjoy this book.

Dog spoilers!!.......2005-07-17
I got this set as a gift and I have been having fun with it ever since. My three English Springer Spaniels love home-made bones and I have to admit, I loving making them. I have a few dog treat books and each have their own unique appeal. This one is excellent for hard, crunchy biscuits. The Peanut Butter Bones (page 24) are the guy's all time favorite. I make them without the filling and have had to quadruple the recipe. Not just for my dogs but for their friends too. It has become a Saturday morning ritual they won't let me out of. This book has seriously spoiled them.
You can make your own "green breath freshening" type treats by adding 1/2 cup mint leaves to the "Spinach Bones" on page 35. Just lower the temperature to 200 and bake longer to retain the bright green color. I really like the heavy use of whole wheat flour since this makes a harder biscuit and is also so much healthier. The best thing about "You Bake 'Em" is how it follows a basic formula that once mastered, lets you create your own combinations. This was really a great gift!
Great recipes, great gift!.......2005-02-26
My dogs and many neighborhood dogs have sampled several of these recipes. All biscuits were well received and I found them easy to make. The nice thing about these recipes is that you can make little changes or forget an ingredient and no one complains. The dogs love the treats, period! I plan to make the fishy treats again and cut smaller pieces that my cat can enjoy, too. I love this book and all the goodies that came with it, the cutters and the little gift bags are cute. This whole package makes a very nice gift.
Great fun for dog lovers.......2005-02-25
My three labradors and I love this recipe book! One of my dogs has lots of allergy problems and has problems with many commercially available treats and foods, so the recipes in this book offer many options for my allergic dog. I've found the recipes easy to make and also very adaptable to substitutions in ingredients if needed. Everything is well organized and easy to read and understand in an attractive, appealing design. The inclusion of the fun dog-themed cookie cutters makes it even more enjoyable to make special treats for my dogs and to make creative gifts for our doggie friends. My dogs have loved every treat recipe we've tried, as have all the pooches who've gotten them as gifts. I've found this book to be a perfect and unique gift for dog loving friends. If you enjoy doing special things with and FOR your dogs, this "kit" will give you lots of hours of fun and instant popularity with the canines!
Great book for the dog lover.......2005-02-06
I enjoy finding unique books and this one definitely falls under that category. In addition to the dog biscuit recipes the book includes five cookie cutters to cut your treats into the shape of a dog bone, heart, cat, fire hydrant, or doghouse. The obvious question to many readers is why bother to make your own dog biscuits when you can buy them so readily at the store? If you have to ask then you really don't understand the bond between many dog owners and their dog. For me it is because I can control the ingredients and I can create the "perfect" training snack. My dog is quite finicky about dog treats and doesn't like most of the store brands, so using them as a reward just doesn't work. On the other hand the recipe for Cheddar Liver in this book makes a perfect training reward that she will do almost anything to get. The book itself contains 24 different recipes for everything from basic cheese biscuits to liver and oat, liver leather, multigrain herb, grain-free and even carob biscuits. All are easy to make, although several do require a food processor to puree the ingredients. The attached box with the cutters in it is pretty flimsy and soon falls apart. However, the pages of the book are connected to the box via three metal split rings so the box can be removed, the cutters placed in a kitchen drawer or other appropriate place and the book placed on the bookshelf. This took a lot of thought to put the book together in this fashion so it can be easily converted to a standard book and was greatly appreciated on my part. You Bake `Em Dog Biscuits is highly recommended to dog lovers everywhere and a perfect gift for that friend who treats their dog as a part of the family.

enjoyed this book. Good info, easy to read and use. Has a lovely selection and variety of recipes.Thoroughly recommend it.
Entertaining.......2007-07-03
This book not only gave you the recipes, it had little helpful hints in regards to what ingredients are not good for your pup.
Unique- with drawbacks........2007-03-01
I bought this book based on all the good reviews and was a little disappointed....almost every recipe calls for a food processor and not having one at the moment pretty much excluded alot of the recipes. Of the ones I did make my two pugs weren't crazy about them. It is O.K. but there are many more that are better out there...
Good Service.......2007-01-16
Thank you for your prompt service. Your communication every step of the way was greatly appreciated. Also, this is delicious.
Best Dog Cookbook.......2006-08-30
This is one of the best cookbooks for dogs. The recipes are very easy to follow and I also like how there are instructions for storing. You don't find that in alot of other books like these. My dogs love everything I've made so far and will be making some goodie treats this Christmas for my friends with pets. I would recommend this book.

Book Description
One of Abbeville's most spectacular achievements, representing the highest standards in fine art printing, now available at a more economical price.
This marvelous edition of Audubon's Birds of America displays all 435 of Audubon's brilliant handcolored engravings in exquisite reproductions taken from the original plates of the Audubon Society's archival copy of the rare Double Elephant Folio. Although many attempts have been made to re-create the magnificent illustrations in Audubon's masterpiece, nothing equals the level of fidelity or scale achieved in this high-quality edition.
Completely reorganized and annotated by Roger Tory Peterson, who was America's best-known ornithologist, and issued with the full endorsement and cooperation of the Audubon Society, this volume is the first to rearrange the plates in a more scientific order. Peterson's fascinating introduction places Audubon in the context of the history of American ornithological art and also reproduces a wide sampling of the work of Audubon's notable predecessors and disciples, including Peterson's own justly famous paintings.
This new systematic arrangement of the prints, complete with informative commentaries about each bird, made it possible to correct many of the problems or errors in Audubon's original edition that later scholarship revealed.
Other Details: 428 full-color illustrations, 435 duotones.

A Good Companion.......2007-07-14
Having recently read the biography of Audubon, I was very interested in seeing the actual drawings. The book I read had a few of them in black and white, but I wanted to see a larger sample in color. I decided to see if Amazon had anything and was very surprised to see that they offered all of the original drawings in color for a very small price. I realized the book would be smaller than the original life size drawings, but was a little surprised to find that the book was so small. That is my main problem with the book. Otherwise - WOW. To see these birds in all their glory in full color is just breathtaking. Furthermore, when you consider the original size, to have shrunk them down and still maintain the detail and the beauty is quite impressive. One can appreciate the drawings without having read about Audobon's struggle to create and then publish them, but I would suggest this book as a companion to a good biography of Audobon. Once you have both, his accomplishment can be fully appreciated.
Spectacular.......2005-08-02
This book is spectacular. The images are breathtaking, and the quality of their presentation is nothing short of superb. Wow!!!
Why reorganize a symphony?.......2004-11-30
Let me qualify my remarks by first saying that I have not even seen this version. I have no doubt that the printing is of the highest quality, but I have a serious reservation about the organization of this book. Audubon deliberately mixed his birds in a non-taxonomic order to maintain a freshness and an element of suprise. I recently acquired a large format copy published by Welcome Rain, which follows Audubon's original order. The effect is a delightful romp through nature, full of suprises, drama and movement. He never intended it to be a catalog with all his ducks in a row, it was to be an experience. I have seen an abridged, small format edition of his paintings arranged in the standard, dull taxonomic order of a typical field guide and the effect is nothing like seeing them in the order Audubon intended. Rearranging the plates for convenience of listers diminishes this work, and to a certain extent, is a disservice to the artist. While I am happy to see that his work remains in print and is being reproduced at very high standards, I would hope that it would be viewed as a symphony, not as a random collection of notes needing to be organized alphabetically.
Beautiful volume of audubon.......2004-07-16
If you are a birder and you collect all the great bird books, your collection is not complete until you get this. A beautiful book, contained in a hard case, with excellent printing. A steal at $250 at its original price, now knocked down between $125 to $185. Get this book! A great tribute to Peterson and Audubon.

Book Description
Interview of Sonia Pressman Fuentes by Linda Kyle Davis published in the "Writers Around the World" section, writingnow.com, August 1998:
Q: What must writers do to succeed in the field, or writing both on the Internet and in print?
A: To succeed in writing, writers must keep on writing and marketing. The marketing takes at least as much time and effort, and probably more, than the writing. But it's worth the effort. For me, there's no sense in writing if you're not going to be communicating to readers.

Very highly recommended.......2002-03-15
As the first woman lawyer in the General Counsel's office at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 1965, Sonia Pressman Fuentes always intended to write her life story. The tone and direction of her tale, however, shifted dramatically one day over coffee with another author/editor. Rather than the scholarly tome originally envisioned, the novel evolved to a humorous, personal account of Fuentes' family, her life, and her place in history.
Beginning with an account of her father running away from marriage, EAT FIRST follows her parents' marriage through the difficult decision to leave their home and business in Germany as the events leading to the Holocaust began to unfold. Eventually coming to the United States, Fuentes describes herself as a "bespectacled, asthmatic child of older, immigrant parents in a new country." Humor became a coping device - a gift she has honed to a fine edge, providing the novel a light, entertaining tone that carries throughout the pages. Wonderful vignettes such as how her father earned a B+ for saving her sewing disaster and her mother's love of night school, but sacrificing that love for her family, result in a strong, compelling narrative.
Following her high school graduation, Fuentes earns a scholarship to Cornell, despite her father's opinion that too much education can be a bad thing. As her family pressured for marriage and children, Fuentes found her way to law school instead. Graduation with a law degree did not lead to a number of folks offering work, however, and the next few years provided the impetus for Fuentes' involvement in women's issues. At the age of forty-two she finally fulfilled her family's dreams for her to be married, soon having a child as well. A later divorce in no way seems to have negated her family's approval to finally have her married, and her determination to have a child will keep readers entertained.
Author Sonia Pressman Fuentes presents her memoirs in EAT FIRST--YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'LL GIVE YOU, The Adventures of an Immigrant Family and Their Feminist Daughter. With an intense awareness of her place in history, in terms of family relations, career, and self-realization, Fuentes reveals her immigrant background, her involvement in Women's Rights, and her love for family. A woman who blazes her own unorthodox path, this remarkably self-honest memoir is a must read for all. Her extraordinary gift for an enthralling narrative and lively personality brings the text a life and vibrancy that will live in the reader's memory long after the last page is turned. EAT FIRST belongs on everyone's keeper shelf.
